Uncommon Encounters

CONNECTIONS

In our stories about the Power of We in this issue of Connections, you’ll see a lot of talk about transactions versus encounters. I thought I’d use this space to add a little more explanation to that distinction.

Nowadays, it’s business as usual to drive up to a gas station, swipe your card at the pump and refill your vehicle without ever going into the station itself. That’s a transaction, for sure. You paid for gas. You got gas. End of story.

Remember when gas stations were “full service?” An attendant would come out to your vehicle, start the pump, then wash your windows while your car refueled. You could chat or ask for

directions as he was doing his job. He might even come across a potential engine problem as he checked your oil (saving you from a breakdown).

There was a connection that came with the transaction. There was service that came with the product, and it added value to the exchange.

There was someone looking out for you. That’s an encounter.

Now, there’s a place for both transactions and encounters in the world. Just not necessarily at DSG. That’s because transactions are common.

Encounters are not, and that’s sort of the point of the Power of We. It’s our way of reminding everyone that “common” just isn’t good enough at DSG. Instead, we’re going to set our goal for “exceptional” and put forth the effort to get there.

When you partner with DSG, you’ll see the difference. Every encounter is going to be meaningful. Every relationship is going to be strengthened by the Power of We. That’s our promise to you.

In late 2010, DSG’s employee owners came together to introduce a new core purpose statement. A core purpose statement provides a concise way for team members to understand a company’s most important goals, as well as to show customers and manufacturing partners how important their relationships are to DSG. This statement succinctly expresses what DSG does, and why it exists.

DSG’s core purpose statement is this: To put the Power of We in every interaction. Going beyond making transactions and creating successful partner encounters in everything we do. With each employee owner focusing on fulfilling this core purpose, DSG can reach its full potential – to become a partner with each and every individual and company that it works with. As these partners succeed, so will DSG. What does this mean to you? If you are a DSG customer, it means that each employee owner recognizes a single philosophy in regard to serving you – become a partner, then help that partner to succeed. In practical terms, it means consistency and focused dedication in each encounter at DSG. You know that you are going to get outstanding service no matter who you work with, no matter what the job is, no matter what product you buy. Work with DSG to build this

relationship, and you will reap the rewards.

Decisions can be made quicker, answers can be found faster and jobs can be done better. Manufacturers can expect the same level of commitment as they partner with DSG themselves.

From the beginning, DSG has prided itself on the success of its customers. DSG’s slogan, For All The Right Connections, is an important part of the company’s mission, and it continues to be so. Tim Hoffman, owner of Hoffman Electric in Browns Valley, Minnesota, sees the benefits of automation in the ag industry firsthand.

Technology such as control panels and touch screens are allowing farmers and other ag professionals to reap huge rewards in lower costs from time savings. Furthermore, automation technology has given those in the ag world an opportunity to look at their business in new ways. “It’s not about what can be automated anymore, it’s about what do we want to automate,” says Hoffman. With DSG’s help, Hoffman Electric recently completed an innovative automation project for Beardsley Farmers Elevator in Beardsley, MN. Owning an electrical contracting business that does 80 percent of its work on ag-based projects, Hoffman understands the need for automation in agriculture. “Grain handling systems are getting more complex,” says Hoffman, “and that makes automation even more important. Elevator owners want higher efficiency, fewer complications, better

monitoring and improved safety. Only an automated system can satisfy all of those needs.”

Growing up with a grandfather who was a farmer, Hoffman familiarized himself with the world of agriculture early on. Add to that a father who was a mechanical contractor in Browns Valley, and it’s no surprise that Hoffman does what he does today. Hoffman Electric does service work and automation installation for grain-handling facilities and ag operations over a 20- to 30-mile radius around Browns Valley.

The crew at Hoffman Electric also works on residential and small commercial projects, as well as heating and air conditioning contracting.

The Beardsley Farmers Elevator project is a good example of Hoffman’s ability to put automation technology to work in the service of agricultural productivity. The farm communities surrounding Browns Valley have seen a significant increase in corn production over the years, and to keep up with the high corn yields, the Beardsley Famers Elevator needed to expand its operation to add a third holding complex. This

farmer-owned elevator mostly handles corn (as well as beans) from farmers, dries it and then ships it out via trucks, with much of the final product going to ethanol plants. This third complex would allow the Beardsley Farmers Elevator to increase its capabilities, and the farmers who own it needed Hoffman Electric to finish the project quickly.

“The job came in during the middle of June, and they wanted to be up and running by October 1,” says Hoffman. “That was a pretty tight deadline, and considering it was a good-sized complex, we knew we needed some help in order to get it done.” Hoffman gave the folks at DSG a call, and soon the DSG automation trailer was at his door.

“DSG’s automation trailer is filled with everything DSG Automation has to offer,” says Hoffman. “I got a good, close look at the products and after some great conversation with John DeYonge and John Gearman from the Sioux Falls Panel Shop, we set up a meeting to lay out a game plan for the Beardsley Farmers Elevator.”

For the project, DSG designed a custom automation system that controls the conveyors which transport products throughout the elevator’s new complex. This system, in turn, is controlled by a single, user-friendly touch screen. With a few presses of the screen, the elevator operator can now program and monitor the entire elevator system.

The Beardsley Farmers Elevator project was a success, which came as no surprise to Hoffman.

“DSG can design and build a complex PLC panel system, then make it simple to operate for the end user,” he says. “I’ve worked with DSG for more than a decade, so I knew that this project was going to work out great with them by my side.”

As an electrical contractor, Hoffman mostly works with the DSG team in Alexandria, MN, specifically Cameron Pederson and Jesse Streed. “Cameron, Jesse and the rest of the DSG crew make it easy for me to keep coming back to them,” says Hoffman. “If I need something, even if it’s the smallest thing, they get it to me right away. Plus, I tend to use some unique brands of products, and they always have been able to supply them.”

According to Hoffman, DSG will be a business partner that he continues to call on for help.

“Agriculture demands more automation every day,” says Hoffman, “and I need a distributor that can keep up. Thankfully, I’ve got DSG.”

Cameron Pederson There’s no doubt that Cameron Pederson knows his stuff when it comes to DSG. After all, he’s been with the company since college, and even worked for four of the branches. Pederson made his way through his industrial distribution degree at Minnesota State University-Moorhead working at the DSG warehouse in Fargo. He also participated in the DSG management internship program. When he graduated, it seemed like a natural fit for him to continue his career with DSG, and that he did, gradually working his way up to become part of the outside sales team.

Pederson has now been with DSG for ten years. He has worked for the Fargo, Sioux Falls, St. Paul and Alexandria branches. He says that he has enjoyed being able to grow with the company, and move as necessary. He is now back in the Fargo branch, but continues to serve DSG customers out of the Alexandria branch, as well.

“Ever since I started at DSG, I’ve done what I can to expand my knowledge of the industries we serve, both through the experience of teammates and through DSG’s many training programs,” says Pederson. “DSG encourages you to have an entrepreneurial spirit, which isn’t all that common.”

Pederson also enjoys building both business and personal relationships with customers. His typical day includes a morning meeting with a current DSG customer, followed by meeting another current customer for lunch. In these meetings, Pederson works hard to bring new ideas to those he serves, offering fresh solutions to the challenges his customers share with him.

In the afternoon, he sets out into uncharted territory, calling on new customers across the region.

“I’ve worked with some customers for a few years now, so I know exactly what they’re looking for,” says Pederson. “With others, I’m still building that relationship. But whether I’ve worked with a customer for years or months, I take pride in finding innovative ways to help their business out.”

Pederson offers solutions like the introduction of cutting-edge automation into jobs and processes that can benefit the most. No matter if a project is being created with automation in mind or retrofitting it into an existing system, Pederson understands how DSG can be of service.

“Whether you’re improving efficiency, adding safety or taking advantage of new tax incentives, there are a lot of ways that automation can help,” says Pederson. “It’s been exciting to come up with solutions for our customers, so that they can meet these new standards and save money at the same time.”

When Pederson isn’t busy building relationships with his customers at DSG, he keeps busy building his relationships outside of work. A husband and father of two, Pederson spends much of his time with his family. The rest is spent coaching the lacrosse team at North Dakota State University.

Bonfe Plumbing, Heating & Air Service, Inc. in St. Paul, Minnesota, prides itself on expanding the limits of what can be done for its customers, and it has done so since it began in 1993. Bonfe’s expertise includes plumbing, HVAC, electrical and appliance service, and has built its business specializing in maintenance agreements. The latest proof of this commitment to innovation is Bonfe’s vendor-managed inventory partnership with DSG. This ongoing synergy between the two companies hasn’t just reduced the need for Bonfe to inventory products, it has significantly reduced downtime on projects, as well. That’s a win-win for everyone involved, especially Bonfe’s customers.

Three years ago, Bonfe began to explore the move toward vendor-managed inventory.

Basically, this meant that Bonfe would move away from the age-old tradition of stocking products and parts in its warehouse and instead, adopt a process in which products were purchased and placed directly onto Bonfe’s

service trucks as they were needed. A positive side effect of this move was that it would reduce downtime for Bonfe customers by eliminating the need for unplanned trips to a warehouse or even to the distributor. In order to put its plan into action, Bonfe needed help from a distributor that shared its commitment to progressive business ideas. DSG immediately came to mind.

“We had been talking about moving toward this type of system for the past three years,” says Peter Bonfe, owner of Bonfe. “It was about a year ago that we actually sat down with DSG to discuss the change and how they could help us out with it.

“The Bonfe name is pretty well known in the St. Paul community. My grandfather started Bonfe Auto Service, which is now run by my cousins,” says Bonfe. “We are expanding on that positive name recognition every time we go above and beyond to satisfy a customer.

We’re involved with this community, and it shows. Our involvement with DSG has only served to strengthen that brand equity.”

Bonfe now works with DSG as its main plumbing distributor. It has eliminated its warehouse of plumbing parts and much of the carrying costs associated with labor and handling materials. So what is the next step for vendor-managed inventory?

“I think the next stage will be one in which an order is sent to DSG automatically as each product is taken off of the service truck,” says Bonfe. It’s the next logical step in a partnership anchored in a simple goal: everyone succeeds when the process improves, everyone wins when the end customer is happy.

“We started out as a service company, and we’ve never wavered from that mission,” adds Bonfe. “We’ve never done a new construction job. We focus purely on service repair and retrofit replacement for our customers.”

Jim Poole sells what he knows. For years, Poole worked as an HVAC technician in the Park Rapids, Minnesota, area. He installed furnaces, hung ductwork and made his way through crawl spaces on a daily basis. Working hands-on in the HVAC industry has made Poole the perfect addition to the DSG team. Poole’s experience allows him to understand exactly what his customers are looking for. It helps him to understand the big picture and the best corresponding solution. In fact, helping customers to overcome challenges is Poole’s favorite thing about his job at DSG. “My job is all about building a strong relationship with my customers, and I really enjoy that,” says Poole. “It’s not just a transactional business; the relationship has got to be there.”

Poole began work at the DSG Bemidji branch in November 2010. When he saw that DSG had an opening, he knew that it would be a good fit for his talents, and today he says he couldn’t be happier.

“I really enjoy being able to introduce my customers to products that will make their job easier,” says Poole. “I also love that DSG encourages input from everyone. We work as a team, and that makes coming to work enjoyable.”

Water is an incredible thing. I’ve spent a large part of my life learning all about water and how people use it. I respect water, and in fact, we can learn a lot from good old H2O. The folks at AAA Pools – our featured customer in this issue – know exactly what I’m talking about.

When you think about the DSG Waterworks Group, you think of municipal and rural water systems, and industrial pumping applications.

These are made up of large pipe, fittings, valves and the electric controls that manage and monitor flow.

If you asked a group of children what waterworks is, however, one or more answer would probably include the word “pool” in it. If that pool is located between Minneapolis, Minnesota, and Rapid City, South Dakota, or Omaha, Nebraska, and Grand Forks, North Dakota, there is a good chance that Allen Albers from AAA Pools in Harrisburg, South Dakota, had some part in its construction. Albers has been in the pool business for nearly 20 years.

“We opened AAA Pools eight years ago,” says Albers, “and we are growing at an average rate of about 35 percent each year.”

Today, Albers leads a year-round crew that designs and builds residential and commercial

pools. To construct the pools, Albers uses a system known as shotcrete. Shotcrete is concrete that is projected pneumatically at a high velocity onto a surface through a hose. Shotcrete undergoes placement and compaction at the same time due to the force with which it is projected from the nozzle. It can be impacted onto any type or shape of surface, including vertical or overhead areas, and does not need wood forms. Once the concrete is cured, it is sealed with a half-inch plaster coat finish. The outcome is a pool with 10-inch thick concrete walls. In addition to residential and commercial pool projects, AAA Pools also helps to design and build large waterparks.

“One of the largest projects that we’ve done is the Boji Splash indoor waterpark at Bridges Bay Resort in Okoboji, Iowa,” reports Albers.

“It was a 25,000- square-foot project.”

Waterparks like Boji at Bridges Bay make a big splash with families. They include fun

features that revolve around water – slides, cannons, basketball, 500-gallon dump buckets and even pirate ships. In order to build these features, AAA Pools turned to DSG for the pipe, fittings and valves that make it all happen.

“We’ve worked with DSG since we opened the business,” says Albers, who owns AAA Pools with his wife. “My first contact with DSG was with Kevin Paulson.”

AAA Pools now works with the Waterworks City Desk in Sioux Falls, SD, for all of the products they need for pool and waterpark construction projects. With help from DSG, AAA Pools is excited about its next big project – a waterpark at a Sioux Falls casino that includes a new twist.

“The entire complex has geothermal heating, which will include the pool,” explains Albers.

“The casino’s heating system will also include a mix of automated systems. So along with DSG supplying the pipe, fittings and valves for this waterpark project, DSG’s engineers in its

Automation Group will be available to help, as well.”

Albers is excited to be able to bring the cutting-edge technology of DSG’s Automation Group to the waterworks industry. He hopes to continue to challenge himself with projects like the casino, and with the help of DSG, he is confident AAA Pools will be doing just that.

When Albers isn’t building pools and waterparks, he spends his time relaxing with his wife and two daughters in their cabin on a whole different kind of waterpark – the Missouri River near Sioux City, IA. It seems like great fun almost always includes waterworks.

The vast area that the DSG Communications Group serves is some of the most beautiful country in the world. There is something for everyone, whether it’s the lakes of Minnesota or the rolling hills of Iowa and Nebraska. The fertile valleys of the eastern Dakotas transition to the beautiful buttes and Black Hills in the western Dakotas – moving further west to the Rocky Mountains in Wyoming and Montana. This area includes large cities, urban communities and rural towns. In fact, some areas redefine the word “rural.”

Connecting some of these areas with high - speed broadband can be a real challenge for companies like West River Telecom (WRT). Established in 1952, WRT is headquartered in Hazen, North Dakota. It serves more than 14,500 customers with 25 exchanges located in all or part of 17 counties in North Dakota and South Dakota. WRT employs more than 75 local people throughout its 9,756-square- mile rural service area.

One of WRT’s most rural service areas lies southwest of Bismarck, ND, in a sparsely populated part of the Dakotas.

WRT needed to upgrade its old infrastructure of copper telephone wire to provide customers with a quality dial tone and high-speed broadband connections in this area.

“It’s important to take a close look at the economics when you upgrade any system,” says Tim Johnson, installation and repair manager for WRT. “As a cooperative, we want to ensure that we provide the best possible coverage and invest our member owners’ assets wisely.

Installing fiber-optic cable into some service areas would have been cost prohibitive, so we installed a 700 -megahertz wireless tower system to provide broadband for voice and data. These towers can cover a 15-mile radius, and with overlapped coverage, we’re able to reach nearly all of our customers. However, there are a few customers whose homes are in valleys that can’t be reached without added antenna height.”

For those tough-to-reach customers, WRT partnered with DSG to find a solution. Using a new pole technology – an RStandard™ Modular Monopole from RS Technologies – WRT installed

a 90-foot pole with a Yagi antenna on the top to provide these customers with a broadband connection. For one rancher, this connection makes it possible to buy and sell cattle online – saving time and travel expenses.

RStandard™ modular poles can reach up to 150 feet in length and are designed for up to 125 years of service. The modular pole is constructed of an advanced composite material that combines an ultra-strong polyurethane resin with E-glass fiber. It is corrosion-, rot- and pest-resistant. Poles come with a guarantee for manufacturing defects, wind, lightning and load.

WRT worked with DSG and RS Technologies’ engineering department to determine the specifications for the modular pole. These specifications were based on the composition of the soil, how high it needed to be and the weight the pole would carry.

“The pole that we installed was 104 feet long,” Johnson says, “14 feet in the ground and 90 feet above.” Because the poles are designed in modular sections, they are easy to transport.

A 150-foot pole can be hauled on a 40-foot trailer, which means no expensive oversized equipment or special permits. Installing the modular poles is also extremely flexible. There is no concrete foundation to pour, and the entire pole can be assembled on the ground.

When it comes to the internet, it seems that the communication possibilities are endless. The only limitation is bandwidth. Think of it like a road; the more lanes that you add, the more vehicles that can move up and down and at faster speeds. DSG and WRT worked together to increase bandwidth by using wireless technology, the innovation of a modular composite pole and a Yagi antenna to change the communication road from a two-lane path of copper to a four-lane wireless highway.

“We set our pole sections on round fence posts, then pulled the pieces together with a come-along,” says Johnson. “We drilled a hole at each joint and installed a bolt to hold them together.” Because of the modular section design, the weight is considerably less than conventional pole materials, making it easy for two people to move a section by hand. Pole steps can be added for climbing, and all of the wires can be housed in the center of the pole so there is no “whipping” action from the wind.

“We used a large auger to put a four-foot-wide hole in the ground,” Johnson adds. “Once it was level, we poured in expanding foam to hold the pole in place.”

He tries to use this “windshield time” to connect with customers via his phone, even as he travels to meetings throughout western North Dakota and Montana. In fact, communication is one of the strengths of this communications specialist!

Tom has been with the DSG Communications Group since August, 2004. His experience in the telecommunications industry, however, spans nearly 20 years. This wealth of experience has helped Tom to develop strong working relationships with the customers he serves.

“My goal is to build a long-term relationship with a customer, so that I know what projects they’re working on, what products they’ve used in the past and what products best fit the work that they’re doing,” says Tom. “That knowledge allows me to provide the best possible solutions for each customer.”

These relationships come naturally for Tom. He knows the industry, and enjoys watching his customers put cutting-edge solutions to work. With his territory, sometimes that means finding innovative ways to get broadband capabilities to homes in rural areas. In Tom’s mind, it is his fellow employee owners at DSG that give him an advantage when it comes to overcoming these technological challenges.

Allied Bolt Products has been a family-owned business since it was founded in 1955 by Herbert Malin. Operating in a converted post office, Allied Bolt supplied packaged fasteners and wall anchors to Western Electric – which would eventually become AT&T. Glen Malin joined the company in 1987 after graduating from George Washington University. Glen Malin quickly changed the direction of the company, and Allied Bolt began to focus on the development of patented products designed for the installation of CATV and telephone drop cables to homes. In 2002, Glen Malin took over as president and sole owner of Allied Bolt.

Since then, the company has grown by almost tenfold. Three years ago, the company moved from its 20,000-square-foot building in Hollis, New York, to a 65,000-square-foot building in Garden City, New York.

Initially a manufacturer of products for the telecommunications industry, Allied Bolt focused on making products such as aerial drop hardware, drop attachments and grounding hardware.

Today, Allied Bolt is one of the largest producers of telecommunications hardware in the United States, and new products are continually being developed, field tested and brought to market.

Six years ago, Malin expanded Allied Bolt’s horizons by adding utility products to the company’s portfolio.

Since two major suppliers of poleline hardware already existed in the market, Malin knew that it would be a

challenging industry to break into, but he also knew that this was a huge opportunity. “The power utility industry is a large market,” says Mitch McGaughey, National Sales Manager for Allied Bolt. “A pole in the telecommunications industry usually has one bolt. A power utility pole may have up to 15 bolts per pole. Plus, the customer base is much larger.”

Jay Krzyzaniak Outside Sales, Sioux Falls, SD

Jay Krzyzaniak knows that he has big shoes to fill, and he couldn’t be more excited about it. Krzyzaniak joined the DSG team in March 2011, as a replacement for long-time DSG employee owner Ernie Leesch (who recently retired). In fact, Krzyzaniak says one of the biggest reasons that he joined DSG was being able to learn from Leesch before he called it a career. Krzyzaniak, however, is no novice to the industry. He joined DSG with 15 years of experience.

“I previously worked with DSG when I was with American Power & Communications Company,” says Krzyzaniak. “Because of that, I’ve gotten to know the DSG team and been able to see how they work. They are very well respected in the industry, and I’m excited to be a part of that.”

DSG prides itself on its relationships with customers. The team at DSG doesn’t just make sales calls, they provide solutions and service after the sale. It’s what makes DSG stand out, and what Krzyzaniak likes best about his new position.

“At my previous job, the territory I covered was so large that it made it difficult to develop strong relationships with every

He works out of the Sioux Falls, South Dakota, location, but lives in Willmar, Minnesota – traveling to Sioux Falls as needed.

While many of the residents work in Sioux Falls, they choose to live in Baltic because of the tight-knit community and outstanding school district. The community prides itself on its family-friendly atmosphere, and it may be best known in the area for its summer recreation program that draws 100 kids.

This community of 1,000 began installing the Badger GALAXY Fixed Network AMR system in July 2010 with the help of DSG. Prior to installing the Badger GALAXY system, city employees would spend two and a half days reading meters each month. That’s a lot of time spent reading meters, but it wasn’t the only reason for the new system.

“Our employees would have to enter the resident’s backyard to read meters, which meant climbing through snowbanks or at times, dodging dogs,” says Elaine Hendrickson,

municipal finance officer for the city of Baltic. “Many times, they’d have to go back and do it all over again if the readings weren’t quite right. Then, once we received all of the data, we had to key it all into the computer.

It was a tedious process, to say the least.”

Since installing the Badger GALAXY Fixed Network system, Baltic’s meter reading has become significantly more efficient. Data is now sent automatically to the Badger software, which means no more snow banks or angry canines.

“It takes me ten minutes to read meters now,” says Hendrickson. “I download all of the information into my billing software, print the bills and get them sent out. It has reduced the work load, and I no longer have to question readings.”

The benefits, however, haven’t only been seen by city employees. Residents are also seeing just how valuable the system is.

“With this system, we are able to track unusual readings, which often means leaks,” says Hendrickson. “We’ve had a couple of instances of this since installing the system, and our customers have been extremely grateful.”

The city of Baltic began installing the Badger GALAXY system in July 2010. Since then, time spent reading meters has gone from two and a half days to ten minutes.

Walcott, Iowa With the help of DSG, Walcott, Iowa, began installing the Badger GALAXY Fixed Network system in November 2010. Six weeks later, this community of 1600 residents had all of their meters changed out.

“Prior to the Badger GALAXY system, we used an older hand-held device that collected information as we drove by each house.

Oftentimes with this system, however, to get an accurate reading, we had to go into the driveway before the system picked up the signal,” says Jackie Huston, deputy city clerk for the city of Walcott. “Reading the meters took our Public Works Department almost two days.”

The city of Walcott was the first in Iowa to switch to the Badger GALAXY Fixed Network system. After speaking with communities in Minnesota and Wisconsin, the city employees knew it was a good choice to make, and they are glad they did.

“None of the cities that we spoke to had a single complaint about the system, and after installing it ourselves, neither do we,” says Huston. “We are now able to read meters directly on the computer in ten minutes – saving us significant time. Plus, it’s been very helpful in identifying leaks.”

With the new meter-reading system in place, the city of Walcott can focus on more important things, such as welcoming the large amount of traffic that comes through to visit the world’s largest truck stop – Iowa 80. They are also looking forward to welcoming visitors at the 32nd Annual Truckers Jamboree, and the Ragbrai Ride, which brings 15,000 –20,000 bicyclists through Walcott.

Both of these Midwest cities turned to DSG when changing out their meters, not only because of their expertise with Badger metering technology, but because of their service after the sale. When it comes to computers, Dave Sinclair is self-taught. Don’t mistake him for a computer hobbyist, however; Sinclair means business when it comes to technology. Two and a half years ago, DSG needed a metering tech support specialist and turned to Sinclair for the job. Prior to joining the team at DSG, Sinclair had put his problem-solving skills and can-do attitude to work for a printing company for 16 years. He’d also spent time in business management. According to Sinclair, his job at DSG finally takes full advantage of his strengths. While Sinclair has done his share of odd jobs throughout his career, he says that he really enjoys the challenges that DSG provides.

“It’s never a typical day here. When I’m not working on various accounts in the office or training customers on new software, I’m usually taking tech support calls,” says Sinclair. “These calls can be the most challenging part of my job, but they’re also the most rewarding. I have to know all about the system that each customer uses and be able to direct them through any issues they may be having. My favorite part of these calls is when the customer really comes to understand the technology. It’s nice to know that I helped them to get to that point.”

Sinclair also stays busy keeping up with the constant changes that seem to drive the metering industry. That way he can respond quickly and accurately when customers call for advice. It also helps that the team at DSG is always willing to work together to contribute to a customer’s success.

“We all work really well together to get questions answered,” says Sinclair. “I focus more on the Badger meters, so if a customer has a question on an Itron meter, I may need to turn to a coworker to help me out. It’s great to be able to play off of and learn from each other.”

When Sinclair isn’t learning the ins and outs of metering technology software, this Iowa native enjoys dabbling in computer and video games, and spending time with his girlfriend.

Elliot was on hand to answer questions, as well as to talk about the latest in two-way automatic communication systems (TWACS) from GE. “Our industry is driven by communications,” says Elliot. “We are always updating our products, and we’re really appreciative of the efforts that DSG puts forth. They train themselves on the GE products and know what the best solution is for each of their customers.”

Beyond The Water: Tips That Every Freshwater Angler Might Want To Know.

Here are a few hints that might help you reel in the “big one” next time you’re on the water.

• More than three-fourths of the record game fish are caught in the days around and during the full moon and new moon.

• The best time to catch a trophy walleye is five to seven weeks after the fish have completed spawning (that’s when the females go on the prowl for food).

• One of the least known, but most effective, bait for trout is the water worm.

• Pikes more than 30 inches prefer water temperatures of 50 to 55 degrees.

• A female fathead minnow, which is more silvery than a male, is more effective at attracting game fish.

• A sudden decrease in light level triggers walleyes to bite.

Most of us have rowed a boat at some point in our lives. It’s great exercise, which is code for “it’s a lot of work.” In theory, having two people row a boat should make it easier. After all, that’s twice the manpower.

We all know that it’s not quite that simple.

Both rowers may be headed for the same goal.

They may even be doing the exact same thing (that is, rowing the boat forward). But if one of the rowers is just a little off on their timing, the

boat moves slowly and lurches around in the water. If one of the rowers is way off on their timing, the boat might actually start to move in circles. Everybody in the boat needs to share a goal, but they also need to be in sync.

That’s why we’re making such a big deal about the Power of We. It helps everyone – employee owners, vendors and customers – to stay in sync.

It’s not revolutionary, by any means. After all, I would like to think that we were all rowing in the same direction even before we introduced the Power of We. Instead, I really believe that the Power of We is the next logical step in making the DSG experience better.

How will we know if it’s working? That’s where you come in. As one of our business partners (or even if you are a prospective business partner), I’m counting on you to tell us how the Power of We has made an impact on your relationship with DSG.
