1-Year Anniversary! Owners At Scott’s Promote One-Stop Shopping

C

elebrating their first year at Scott’s Landscaping and Exterior Lighting, owners Josh Martie and Dan Fieker, are very pleased with business and have made a few improvements and adjustments to make Scott’s a one-stop-shop for all exterior needs. “We have had a great year,” said Martie with a smile. “I think there were a lot of curious customers who stopped by to see what’s new and meet our knowledgeable staff.” Of course, customers can still count on that same great staff and top-notch customer service, and they have added a few things like fencing and concrete work which is a natural extension of what they already offered. Working for Scott’s the 12 years before owning it, Martie knows every aspect of the business. He began at Scott’s as a landscape laborer and worked his way up establishing core relationships with customers along the way. “I try to visit with our clients at least three times per year: spring, summer and fall,” he said. He also obtained an education in horticulture at Southwestern Illinois College. Discussing trends in their business, the two coowners think that more people are staying put in their current homes and rehabbing things they want to change, and the “back-yard” vacation is becoming even more popular. Of course the economy plays a role in this trend, but Fieker also thinks cable television shows for do-it-yourselfers give people the ideas and motivation to start a project but they know they need help from a professional.

“That’s where we step in with professionally designed landscaping including the plants and trees, patios, outdoor fireplaces, water features, sprinkler systems, exterior lighting and now fencing,” Fieker said. “We are a one-stop-shop – that’s really our strength and that’s what makes us different from the guy in a truck.” Technology has also improved at Scott’s. With their gorgeous computer image design programs, customers can walk into the consulting room and literally see their own home on a huge monitor with new landscaping around it. “They don’t have to visualize anything – it’s right there and we have the ability to move things around,” Martie said. In the garden center, they are creating a resource center where customers can sit down and research their projects. “We plan to have a horticulture encyclopedia,” Fieker said. And don’t miss the quaint retail area loaded with all kinds of unique sculptures, bird baths, fountains, pottery, garden flags, benches, and so much more. For the future, long-time residents will be pleased to know that there are plans for the charming farmhouse on the property that has been deemed a historical landmark in Fairview Heights. “It used to be Scott’s Scoops frozen custard. We hope to reopen it as a floral and gift shop,” Martie said. Scott’s is located in Fairview Heights on Old Collinsville Road just minutes from St. Clair Square: 5515 Old Collinsville Road; (618) 632-9338; www.scottsgardencenter.com.

Get Set For GrillFest 2014 At Hearthside

G

rillers are already lickin’ their chops as they prepare for the sixth annual GrillFest on April 26 at Hearthside Grill and Fireplace. While it’s designed for fun, the intention is to collect canned goods for the Zion Lutheran Food Pantry. “The Urban family has been an active part of the Belleville community since we opened in 1936,” said Mark Urban. “Six years ago, we started this event to give back to the community that has done so much for us. Our first year customers brought in 700 to 800 cans – last year we were up to 1,500!” Hearthside also donated an additional $500 in cash. “It’s just a no-pressure sales day where some of our best customers come up and show off their grilling talents and we’re able to help out the Zion food pantry,” he said. Loann Szopa, director of food pantry operations at Zion, said items they really need at this time are peanut butter and jelly, apple sauce, canned fruit, spaghetti sauce and pasta, muffin and bread mix, canned tuna, cereal, rice and boxed potatoes. Midwestern Propane Gas Co. is a long-time business in Belleville dating all the way back to 1936 in the downtown area. Founders A.J. and Martha Urban first opened as a butane retailer, which at that time was the “new” energy fuel for cooking and heating. They had customers from Chicago all the way to Cairo. The business thrived as the Urbans established a reputation for dependability and service throughout the state and in the early 1950s, the company moved to its present location on South Belt East near BelleClair Fairgrounds. As the market and technology changed, so did Midwestern Propane Gas Company. In the 1960s, sales of gas grills and gas logs were added to their services and by the mid-1980s, demand for high-quality leisure products grew exponentially and Hearthside Grill & Fireplace, Ltd. was born in 2000.

Today, Darrell and Don Urban are the third generation owners of the company and their nephew, Mark Urban, is manager. Hearthside has a charming showroom filled with an amazing array of fireplace, stove, and gas log displays as well as charcoal, gas, and pellet grills. “The company has always sold things that customers can heat their homes with,” Mark Urban said. “We also have a great relationship with area home builders but as their market declined we then focused on remodels.” Interestingly, web sites such as Pinterest inspire doit-yourselfers to come in with a plan in hand and the staff at Hearthside helps them with their list. “But there are those customers who are not as handy, and we can do the whole project from start to finish.” Those projects can include indoor fireplaces designed with wood, stone, slate, brick or any material available today, and they can be woodburning or gas. Stoves come in all shapes and sizes and heat with wood, gas, electric or pellets. The latest trend is outdoor fireplaces and firepits which also come as permanent as a built-in stone model or a portable fire pit. Both are fabulous for an evening with family or to entertain a large group of friends. Hearthside staff can design and construct whatever the customer needs. The showroom also showcases all manner of grilling accessories perfect the outdoor chef in your life: tool sets, rubs, sauces, gloves, gift sets, cookbooks, grill gadgets, aprons, thermometers and so much more. Of course, there are gift certificates available as well for many special occasions. Visit Hearthside at 418 S. Belt East in Belleville; (618) 257-0700; www.hearthsidegrill.com.

Classic Shutters I

are here to stay!

n the last 10 years, energy efficient and eco-friendly home products, geared toward simplifying our lives have become more desirable. The window treatment industry has moved forward to meet new goals with more innovations and product improvements than can be mentioned in this article. However, the beautiful and timeless interior shutter system, in all of its different forms, has undergone little transformation and is now enjoying a new relevance in 2010 as a result of our changing needs. “When a simple slatted product is called for, please don’t re-invest in more 1-inch and 2-inch horizontal blinds without considering the beauty, value and efficiencies of a custom shutter system,” said Jennaver Brown, owner of Eye on Design Drapery, Blinds and Shutters, Inc. “In a well-made shutter, homeowners can find a durable, energy-efficient, eco-friendly, and maintenance-free window treatment with privacy and light control features that make them an excellent value.” Homeowners frequently worry that shutters will make their home too dark. “I feel that a shutter designed with the right size vane, the correct color and the right mounting style can actually add light to a room and increase view through the vanes to a level higher than a standard blind,” she said. Recently, shutters have even become motorized to give the homeowner control of those difficult to reach windows. A good shutter designer must have several styles of shutters available to meet the diverse needs of each homeowner. “At Eye on Design, we offer no less than 10 different shutter systems to our clients to enable us to meet their needs as closely and cost effectively as possible,” Brown said.

A beautiful interior shutter system out-performs standard horizontal blinds at the window every time!

“With 50% of our energy loss occurring at the windows of our home, it is easy to understand that interior shutters are an investment with a measureable return,” said Brown. A modern, high quality double pane Low-E window offers an R-Value of approx. 3.5 dependent upon the manufacturer. A high quality shutter system such as the “Newstyle” by Hunter Douglas can increase that R-Value by 70% when added to this type of window. Horizontal blinds are generally unable to increase the R-Value of this window type by more than 15%. Shutters are available in wood, vinyl and composites that each offer benefits with regard to color options, framing styles, humidity resistance, price and special features. A well-trained shutter designer can walk you through your options and help you identify the product that works best for your home. For budgeting purposes, consider costs ranging from $25 to $45 per square foot installed for high quality products with great warranties. If designed properly, you should be able to design around your shutters for many years utilizing many color palettes and furniture styles. A well-designed shutter will reduce your energy costs and add to the re-sale value of your home in ways that horizontal blinds cannot.

Take advantage of our annual Spring Shutter Sale today and see for yourself! Jennaver Brown is the owner of Eye on Design Drapery, Shutters and Blinds Inc. located at 309 East Main Street, Belleville, IL 62220. 618-257-9750; eod4u.com.

Flooring System Goes On Top Of Existing Concrete!

S

t. Louis Resurfacing, Inc. has long been considered the pioneering leader throughout the Midwest in resurfacing. Family owned and operated, Fred and Cindy Wolf founded the company in 1990. The company enjoys an A+ rating with the Better Business Bureau that supports the quality of their products and service. “We are considered the company of record in the Midwest for the installation of the Pebblestone Epoxy System,” said Fred Wolf. “We have applied this popular system to literally thousands of residential and commercial jobs throughout the St. Louis metropolitan area.” The Pebblestone Epoxy System is applied directly over existing patios, driveways, pool decks, front porches and walkways, garage floors, basement floors, and commercial entranceways. Most applications take only one day and can often be used the next day.

“Don’t spend the time and money to tear out existing concrete. The Pebblestone Epoxy System is a durable, quick way to restore your concrete surface, and totally transform ugly concrete into something beautiful,”Wolf said. In addition, the flooring system is stain, chemical, salt and crack resistant. Shawn Wolf, Senior Crew Chief, has a degree in marketing from the University of Missouri State. After finishing college, he decided to take part in the family business and works hard to maintain the highest possible quality in producing the finest decorative concrete resurfacing installations in the Midwest.

Let The Sunshine In Longtime Business Is Grounded In Excellent Service

C

elebrating 45 years of design excellence in the St. Louis metropolitan area, Sunshine Drapery and Interior Design has perfected taking a beautiful window and creating a work of art.

“Customers are welcome to visit our three studios, but our approach is to come to you for an in-home consultation,” owner Bruce Bernstein said. “We want to visit with you in your home so we can see the space and figure out together what the right fabrics and styles may be.” Sunshine Design services are complimentary, convenient and without obligation. “It’s interesting how some customers really need our help while others already know what they want or they can see a selection and say, ‘that’s the style, that’s the fabric,’ and we’re done!” he said. Knowing that window coverings are such a personal decision, Sunshine carries a very large selection of fabrics to choose from in every style imaginable: contemporary, classic, traditional, elegant, casual, etc. There are literally thousands of fabrics and trims to choose from as Sunshine has something available for everyone. Sunshine employs their own seamstresses so customers know their particular job is being created right here in St. Louis. “I think we are one of the only companies that still do our own work,” Bernstein said. Having in-house seamstresses enables the decorator to work directly, and in person, with them. After confirming a consultation appointment, a Sunshine designer will arrive promptly at the client’s home. He or she will help map your goals, budget, project timing and décor style for that particular project, whether it is custom drapes, blinds, shades or shutters. With an expert ear, Sunshine’s designers listen to and further inspire the client’s vision for their home or refurbished space.

Because Sunshine has access to thousands of fabrics for draperies, they can easily coordinate a bedding ensemble or reupholstered furniture. The designer can also consult on paint color and other furnishings for the interior. To top off the entire experience, Sunshine will install the window coverings. In March, they are offering free installation on every drapery, valance, blinds, shades and shutters. "The more one buys, the more one saves," Bernstein said. "Our installers are certified and well trained. At the end of each installation, customers are asked to complete a warranty/survey combination form and our goal is to have every customer so happy they will use us again, and refer family and friends. 99% say just this, but if there is an issue, we get on it right away and I am personally hands on with my staff to make sure the customer is completely satisfied." The history of Sunshine is an American dream story of two business partners and one seamstress in a garage who made into one of the most reputable businesses period in St. Louis. Today, the company, under Bernstein’s helm, employs 45 staff members of all ages with 5 to 35 years of experience each. Bernstein also ownsThe Great Cover Up on Clayton Road, which is a full-service interior design service firm. In addition to window coverings, bedding and reupholstery, The Great Cover Up is a full-service interior design company that sells custom furniture, wall coverings, area rugs, accessories, maps, artwork and more. Scheduling an appointment with Sunshine Drapery is just a click or a call away 24 hours a day: sunshinedrapery.com; (314) 270-5750. Appointments are available anytime of the week, including weekends and evenings within a 100-mile radius of St. Louis in Illinois and Missouri.

Collins Flooring America Celebrates 70 Years In Business

“Some

C

elebrating 70 years of business in the Metro East, Collins Flooring America has met with changes, but they have never wavered from offering the customer a beautiful showroom and the same perfectionist service as the day they opened.

Owners Roxy and Terry Collins are very proud to have been a family-owned business for all these years. “I know our longevity has much to do with putting our customers’ needs first,” Roxy Collins said. “Of course our product line, professional sales and installers have a lot to do with retaining and adding to our customer base which is why we use the slogan – ‘You know who you can trust…right?’“ She continued, “Our customers do trust us and have spread the word about us. They have come to rely on Collins for advice on floor covering and even do-it-yourself items. Our sales team is fully trained and knowledgeable in all our products and then some.” George and Edna Collins started the business in 1944 with the name Collins & Sons Floorcovering at its former location in East St. Louis. At that time, they primarily sold and installed linoleum flooring. In 1969, their three sons – Norm, Bill and Terry – purchased the business from their parents, added carpet to their line of floor covering and moved the business to a larger location at 2431 N. Illinois Street in Swansea. Terry and Roxy Collins purchased the store from Norm and Bill when they retired in 1987 (both brothers have since passed away). “Several members of our family are with us today including our son Sean,” Terry Collins said. “Our other son, Ryan, is an airline pilot.” Changing their name to Collins Flooring America a few years ago, they are able to offer 17,000-plus items from which to choose including vinyl, carpet and laminate to hardwood and ceramic. “If you can’t find what you are looking for, we will find it for you,” he said.

hanged"

Several years ago, because of a high demand for cleaning services, the Collins' purchased a state-of-the-art cleaning system called MaxCare. “This system is used only by our full qualified MaxCare technician Matt Speichinger who is also IICRC certified as well,” Collins said. “MaxCare leaves the carpet and upholstery clean and almost dry by the time they are finished. And for the do-it-yourselfer, we offer Capture carpet cleaning systems. “Personally speaking, Capture has been a lifesaver for us since we added Sigi, our miniature dachshund, to our family,” Collins said. “Capture is wonderful for other spots and spills as well.” Collins’ niche is a professional sales and installation staff, and excellent customer service for residential and commercial properties. No job is too large or small and “If it’s not right, we’ll make it right!” Collins is located at 2431 N. Illinois St. in Swansea; (618) 234-2915; www.collinsflooringamerica.com. Hours are Monday-Friday 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.; Saturday 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.; evenings by appointment.

baking me o c dreams true Spengler Plumbing, Heating & Cooling lead charge to build Chloe’s Cupcake Kitchen

Jason Spengler, President of Spengler Plumbing, Heating & Cooling surprised 11 year-old baker Chloe Stirling, who has become known as the Cupcake Girl, with news that it has secured support to construct a commercial grade kitchen onto her home in Troy, IL this spring.

“Everyone at Spengler considers Chloe part of our family,” Spengler said. “Her dad, Ched, has worked as one of our top plumbers for the past seven years. And we have enjoyed many of Chloe’s Cupcake Creations! So when we heard that she was put out of business - we stepped into high gear to get her back baking again.” Spengler announced that he has been working the phones and his contacts from over 43 years of building and remodeling commercial and residential kitchens in the metro east to secure donations of money, products and services to help build Chloe her very own “Cupcake Kitchen.” When Spengler learned of the situation, he reached out to the Stirlings to offer “When you have a young person show their entrepreneurial spirit to start their own business at age 11, you want to do everything you can to help them support in determining what would be the best path to adding a commercially licensed kitchen onto their home. Spengler met with health officials at the succeed especially when roadblocks are put in their way,” Spengler said. Stirling home located in Troy, IL.

Jason Spengler and Chloe Stirling all smiles after the surprise of Chloe’s Cupcake Kitchen Project.

Stirling’s cupcake business was shut down by the Madison County Health Department in January after a story about the young baker’s successful enterprise appeared in the Belleville News-Democrat, because she didn’t work out of a certified kitchen and was selling to the public.

“When it became clear that she would need an addition, we got to work reaching out to our suppliers and vendors to see if we could gather enough support to build an addition to the kitchen,” Spengler said. On Thursday, February 27th, Spengler hosted a viewing party for Chloe at the sixth grader’s school Triad Middle School, so everyone could see Chloe’s appearance on the Rachael Ray Show who gifted her with new appliances. Immediately following the broadcast of Chloe’s Rachael Ray Show segment, Spengler surprised Chloe with the news that Spengler will be leading the charge to build “Chloe’s Cupcake Kitchen” this spring so that she has a place to put her new appliances. Spengler outlined the timing and plans, stating that he has recruited a local architect who is drawing up the design plans, which should be finished in the next two weeks. Once the plans are finalized with the Stirlings, they will be submitted for the proper permits with government officials.

In the meantime, Spengler continues to seek donations from suppliers and donors through www.spenglerco.com, where interested supporters can log on Chloe had been making cakes and cupcakes out of the family kitchen, mostly and offer their support and read about the construction progress. for friends, relatives and fundraisers. She had some paying customers and the sixth-grader at Triad Middle School had been making about $80 a week. “We have already enlisted help from our suppliers to donate what we need to build this unique Cupcake Kitchen from national companies to local businessHer parents made a deal with Chloe that for every dollar she earned, they es. In addition to leading the charge to pull together all the necessary partners, “Chloe had none of those things going for her,” Heather Stirling, Chloe’s mom Spengler has committed to donating labor costs and equipment as well as said. “But she didn’t give up hope to bake again and follow the rules.” managing the project to completion, which is expected to be in late May.

Elite Retreat Offers A Full Range Of Services New! BioActive Peels For Healthier Skin

C

elebrating 10 years at 400 Carlyle Avenue and 22 years in total, Elite Retreat Day Spa and Salon is located in a charming home that was renovated to provide separate spaces for the client’s privacy and relaxation. Open seven days a week – don’t miss Super Massage Sundays when you receive $15 off 1-hour massages – the spa now offers eight hair stylists, five massage therapists and three aestheticians. Owner Billie Jo Edwards said she believes her success is because of the staff’s unwavering commitment to excellent customer care and the addition of new services as often as possible. Of course, Spa Manager Carrie Kelly keeps things in order. “I don’t know what I’d do without Carrie,” Edwards said. “She is the backbone of this place!” While the menu of services is very thorough, some new additions are Hot Head Tape-in Hair Extensions, Shellac and Gelish Gel polish, the mani/pedi Loyalty Club and the BioActive Peel. “We have also added aromatherapy to our massage sessions,” she said. The front room contains lots of fun accessories like purses, scarves, jewelry, sunglasses, hats and hair/skin products. Gift certificates are always available.

“Chemical peels are popular today because they can improve the quality, texture and tone of the skin,” Edwards said. "But they can also produce side effects such as inflammation. With BioActive Peel, you can get the same powerful results without the associated risks or downtime. Your skin will look and feel healthier than ever." Wedding parties are a specialty as well at Elite Retreat. “We can do hair design and then apply the makeup which saves a bunch of time,” she said. For the bride, she suggests airbrush makeup as the main benefits are: water resistance, flawlessness and not having to reapply for up to 20 hours.“Airbrush makeup is not heavy at all and really does feel like air. It also photographs well." Application for full makeup only requires about 45 minutes – the foundation itself only takes 15 minutes. “And we custom blend the colors for a perfect match,” she said. The Elite Retreat Day Spa and Salon is at 400 Carlyle Avenue and can be reached at (618) 233-8084; www. eliteretreatdayspa.org.

The Foundation of Good Skin Care

Before

By Ooh La La Spa, Anti-Aging & Wellness

D

oes your house have a foundation? Of course it does. That foundation helps support the structure of your home. The same is true of your skin care. You must have a complete skin care regimen, or “foundation,” to support the strength, structure and health of your skin. There are some basic rules of skin care to get you started. The very basics in skin care include: Cleanse, Prevent and Protect. Cleanse. Cleansing your skin is very important and must be done morning and night. Picking the right cleanser for your skin is an important beginning of any skin care regimen as well as adding a cleansing brush, like the Clarisonic. By combining an effective cleanser with the Clarisonic, it will help remove six times more dirt, debris, and makeup than manual cleansing. Effective cleansing also will aid in decreasing pore size while helping your skin absorb the necessary ingredients from your skin care products. Prevent. Prevention and treatment products vary with different skin types and skin care goals. Always boost your diet and skin care with Antioxidants. Antioxidants, such as Vitamins A, C and E, are the ultimate anti-aging ingredients that help support the health of the skin. When applied topically, Vitamin A, also known as Retinol, actually exfoliates the skin which leads to enhanced skin texture and diminished fine lines.

Protection. Protection is a must for anyone looking for healthy skin. If you are not protecting your skin, you cannot correct it. The sun is a major contributor to aging skin. Whether you are at the pool for the day or simply running errands in your car, you are always getting UV exposure. These harmful rays break down collagen, damage skin cells and cause sun spots, and wrinkles. It is very important to protect your skin daily with a full spectrum UVA and UVB medical-grade sunscreen. After applying your recommended skin care products and sunscreen, apply a dusting of mineral makeup. Use truly refined, pure minerals to complement your skin and keep it protected with a natural SPF. Over-the-counter sunscreens and make-up often contain unnecessary dyes, fragrances, mineral oils, and preservatives. With a proper skin care regimen established, you will also get the most from in-office procedures. Healthy skin responds better to procedures like Botox, Dermal Fillers, Laser Skin Rejuvenation, Chemical Peels and Facials. You may even notice that your results last longer by combining your treatment with a solid skin care regimen consisting of medical-grade skin care.

your child works very hard but still gets a poor report card or your child avoids reading and homework as much as possible, Unger Eyecare may be able to help. When a child complains that he can’t see the board your immediate thought is to schedule an eye exam. But when your child brings home a poor report card, you should also consider that a sign that you need to schedule an eye exam. Why an eye exam? When a child struggles with reading and nothing seems to help consistently it is a sign that a vision problem is underlying your child’s difficulties. Does your child love being read to, but hates to read? Is he or she an “auditory learner”? These are signs of a vision problem. The Learning Disabilities Association of America says that when you find a child who is struggling with learning that you should check for vision and hearing problems. Unfortunately, most people incorrectly assume there is nothing wrong with a child’s vision if he or she can see “20/20.” Dr. Tom Unger, optometrist with an office in Troy, said, “If you have a child who is struggling with reading and schoolwork it is vital that you understand that being able to see the letters on the eye chart is just one of over 20 visual skills critical to reading and learning.” Children do not know how they are supposed to see so they rarely complain when they have difficulty seeing the words on the page. Therefore it becomes critical that you are aware of some of the

Masterworks Celebrates 40 Years Of Choral Excellence In The Metro East Founder Dr. Dennis Sparger Reminisces About His Tenure As Conductor

T

he Masterworks Chorale sings to cultivate a lifelong love of choral music with a commitment to excellent artistic performance and music education that inspires our diverse audience.

college agreed to an ‘amicable divorce’ so the Chorale could legally seek its growing support from the community as a non-profit, while still maintaining a presence at the college.

Founded in 1974 by long-time Belleville resident Dr. A. Dennis Sparger, Masterworks Chorale and Children’s Choruses (founded in 1984) seeks to unite and enrich our Metro East communities through the joy of music.

“I believe that much of the success of the Masterworks Chorale during my tenure lies in the outstanding volunteer singers who were so committed to the organization, plus the long list of individual supporters and businesses who funded our program,”he said. “For example, when Bill Badgley was at First National Bank he came to us and asked if he could give us $10,000 to present a free concert at the Cathedral as a Christmas gift to the community. Every seat was filled and extra chairs had to be brought in, and this continued for several years.”

Upon accepting a position with Belleville Junior College, a school positioned for significant growth due to the state’s plan for increased support for community colleges, Dr. Sparger and his wife, Helene, and young daughter, Cindy, moved to Belleville in 1966. “Our plan was to stay for two years, however, we found the town to be an excellent place to raise and educate our growing family,” he said. “Within five years we had three children – Cindy, John and Brian – who all received exceptional educations from Belle Valley School and Belleville East High School. All three kids studied piano privately, played in the grade school band, and sang. The children still have many of their school friends from Belleville.” In the fall of 1974, Dr. Sparger returned from a sabbatical at the University of Illinois where he was working on a doctorate in choral conducting and recognized the area’s need for a community chorus that focused on “the pursuit of excellence” in the performance of major works for chorus and orchestra. “With the blessing of the college, which by then was Belleville Area College, I advertised for a new chorus and, on December 1, 66 singers, including Bellevillian Mark Eros who still sings with the Chorale, presented Handel’s Messiah,” he said. After a few years went by and the quality of the performances rose above the level one might expect with a ‘community’ chorus, the name was changed to Masterworks Chorale. “We thought this name was more representative of who we were and what we did,” Dr. Sparger said. “As our success continued, the

As a young organization, Masterworks was able to present some outstanding soloists. In 1983, soprano Christine Brewer, who is now known around the world, made her first of several performances with Masterworks. In 1985, the publisher of the Belleville News-Democrat provided a $5,000 matching gift to help start a Children’s Chorus. “The next five years were among the best in my life. It was fascinating to learn that children love to sing the music of Bach, Handel, Mozart, Britten, Vaughan Williams and so many more masters. Anything I could teach, they could learn. What I learned from them was to plan efficiently and give clear, concise directions, both of which have helped tremendously in my professional life. Many of these children are still singing today, and I’m sure they all treasure their years in Children’s Chorus. “While I devoted 33 years of my life to Masterworks Chorale, I was joined by many others in the community who are also very important to its success,” Dr. Sparger said. “I read somewhere that people are motivated by only two things: fear and love. I’m grateful that my life has been surrounded by those who love.” (continued on page 43)

Manager Phil Warren Discusses The Goals Of The Team And The Academy

T

he boys of summer will be back with a roar as the Gateway Grizzlies take their field for Opening Day at 7:05 p.m., Friday, May 16 against the Traverse City Beach Bums.

Having stolen the hearts of Metro East residents right off the bat in 2001, the Gateway Grizzlies of the 14-team Frontier League offer affordable excitement on and off the field. With many fun promotions and plenty of entertainment for the kids during the games, families flock to GCS Ballpark all summer continually placing the team among the top in the league for attendance.

Manager Phil Warren

Manager Phil Warren will return this year for his eighth season which makes him not only the longest tenured manager in Grizzlies history, but in 2010 he became the franchise’s all-time leader in managerial wins. His total wins of 356 are the sixth all-time in Frontier League history. Born and raised in Arnold, MO, Warren attended Vianney High School playing soccer and baseball. But it was baseball that he pursued at Southeast Missouri State University on a scholarship. Upon graduation he played in the Frontier League in Chillicothe for three years before heading to the Grizzlies in 2003 where he held 11 total Grizzlies career offensive records when he retired as a player in 2005. After retiring he was named Director of Player Personnel where he even spent some time “flipping thousands of burgers” during the season. Then, “when former Grizzlies manager Danny Cox retired after the 2006 season - I threw my name in the hat and got the job,” Warren said. The Grizzlies players have two goals: “Win a championship and get picked up by an affiliated team,” Warren said. “The players don’t come here and play because of the money. They are all holding on to the same dream and we try to get that fulfilled for them.” In fact, many former Grizzlies players have been signed to MLB Affiliate/Minor League contracts. In addition to managing the team, Warren, along with former Grizzlies hitting coach Darin Kinsolving own P and D Baseball LLC. The company owns and operates the Grizzlies Baseball Academy at GCS Ballpark in Sauget, which was built adjacent to the stadium by team owner Rich Sauget – “It’s a good complement to the stadium and it’s constantly busy.” It’s also a chance for Warren and Kinsolving “to give back what we’ve learned and find ways to make it better for young players,” Warren said. “Baseball has become

so competitive at the high school level these days that more and more parents are investing into professional instruction for that extra edge so they might be able to get a scholarship for college. It’s really becoming a giant industry. Kind of like high school football in Texas,” he said and laughed. “I had a little taste of that when I was growing up in St. Louis – my dad took me across town for a lesson – but nothing like it is today,” he said. “There are thousands of other kids across the country that college coaches can choose from. High school baseball used to be for fun, but if you want to play in college, it has to be your life.” What’s Warren’s most important advice to a student wanting to go to college on a baseball scholarship? “Grades – you have to have good grades and you have to do well on the ACT – grades and ACT scores are everything,” Warren said. “A college coach can’t go to bat for a kid who has a 2.5 average when he’s got kids with 3.5 and better. Those with better grades can also get partial academic scholarships, thus giving the coach more room to spread his scholarship money out, which in turn helps him build the best team possible. "I believe there is a college for everyone given the balance of their academic and athletic achievements," he continued. "That said, I know good academic achievements can help propel a student-athlete into a situation where he/she has the luxury of choosing a college rather than having to settle for a college." But the Academy is there for all players of all ages, too, not just those wanting to make a career out of it. “Every player is different so I try to teach that particular player to become dependent on himself,” he said. “If something’s not going right, I want him to be able to figure it out on his own. It’s just rewarding to help with the development of these young people.”

Upcoming Grizzlies Season

Everyone at GCS Ballpark is excited about hosting the 2014 All-Star game July 16! The Home Run Derby is July 15 which Warren won, incidentally, while playing for the Grizzlies. And July 14 will be a special night just for fans and the All Stars.

Also new this year is the addition of a fabulous fireworks displays on July 3, 4 and 5. “The usual fireworks on the riverfront in St. Louis are being moved to Forest Park as part of St. Louis’ 250 year anniversary,” said Hannah Harres, director of promotions. “We’ll have free parking, ‘glow’ giveaways for the kids and other things to be announced.” Harres is just finishing up the promotions schedule which includes many activities like playing catch with dad on the field for Father’s Day, 5K run/walk for March of Dimes on Mother’s Day, a “jersey off the back” day, Grandparent’s Day activity and so much more. Check the web site for all the details.

Spring Is Here!

(continued from page 37) Dr. Sparger retired from Masterworks in 2007, but still retains his position as conductor of The Bach Society in St. Louis. Among many awards and honors, he was presented last May with the "Lifetime Achievement in the Arts" award by the University of Missouri-St. Louis. *

Today, Masterworks Chorale and the Children’s Choruses are conducted by Dr. Stephen Mager who is also an accomplished organist and pianist as well as composer. In fact, he has been composer-in-residence for The Bach Society since 2004.* Two upcoming concerts for the Chorale and Children’s Choruses will be the culmination of the 40th season.

The Masterworks Chorale will give two performances of a favorite among classic choral music: Durufle Requiem. The first concert will be at 7:30 p.m., May 3, at Christ Church Cathedral in St. Louis and the second at 3 p.m., May 4, at St. Paul’s UCC. This concert will feature the Children’s Choruses as well as guest organist Dennis Bergin who is an accomplished concert organist. “There are many famous ‘Requiems’ but this one is much more recent,” he said. “It was written for a full chorus, organ and cello - it was also written for an orchestra – but the organ/cello version is special because Durufle and his wife were both organists. It’s very powerful music.”

On April 6, the Children’s Choruses will present “Voices of Spring,” which includes “music that emphasizes harmony and part singing,” Dr. Mager said. “It will be a very nice variety of classical pieces, joyful spirituals and a surprise encore! I really believe that our Children’s Choruses are the premier groups in the Metro East and right near the top in St. Louis.”
