Making Connections Is Sweeter With Jan’s Hallmark
E
ric Tschannen, with Jan’s Hallmark, realizes the pandemic has been hard on people not only because of the reality of COVID-19 effects, but the sheer amount of time spent social distancing and even isolating. Here are some of his thoughts on how connecting with each other remains more important than ever. MM: What trends are you starting to see in your business? ET: One of the biggest trends we saw in 2021 was that shoppers were ready to return to stores. Everyone was ready to get out of their houses and start connecting with their communities again. Parallel, and in line with that trend, our customers were sharing more stories about the celebrations they were attending. Families were finally able to catch up on the backlog of weddings, graduations, baby showers, birthday parties and other get-togethers that we all had to postpone. Those are great trends to see because it’s so important for everyone’s health to have strong connections with family and friends, and that has been more difficult to do these last couple years. MM: The importance of staying connected has really been emphasized over the last couple of years. What do you have going on at Jan’s that can help us all connect even more in 2022? ET: This year is going to be a great one. We just introduced a brand new card line called video greetings. Video greeting cards elevate a card recipient’s experience. They get a physical and tangible card, as well as see and hear from their loved ones. Personalized video greetings offer the ability for the
sender to seamlessly customize their video by adding their own text, photos or video content, and even combining content from multiple people. We are also reintroducing our “Real Stories” product line featuring Morgan Harper Nichols. This selection features cards and gifts all focused around connecting with our loved ones and offering them messages of appreciation, support, and encouragement. There’s no need to wait for a difficult time or a special occasion to let your loved ones know you are thinking of them. Our “Just Because” card line offers creative, colorful ways to add some positivity to the world on any given day. And if you aren’t a member of our free rewards program yet, get in and sign up! Each member receives a free card from the “Just Because” every month in 2022! MM: Those sound like some great additions. What else do you wish more people knew about Jan’s? ET: Well, right now we are getting ready to make our locally famous chocolate covered strawberries! They are a seasonal favorite that our company has been making for Valentine’s Day and Mother’s Day for close to 30 years. Producing locally and delivering our product on February 12th, 13th, and 14th ensures our customers are getting the freshest, highest quality chocolate covered strawberries available. It’s a sure way to put a smile on the face of anyone’s Valentine! Visit Jan’s Hallmark in Columbia Center; Belleville Crossing; Green Mount Crossing; Alton Square Mall; and Edwardsville.

Long-Time, Family-Owned Jewelry Store Has Succeeded Despite COVID
C
ecena’s Jewelry has a rich history in the Metro East opening on Dec. 1, 1975 in Cahokia just down the road from Parks College. “My folks opened the store where I literally grew up,” Tony Cecena said. Moving in the late ‘80s to West Belleville proved successful, but their location change to Green Mount Crossing in Shiloh has been “epic,” Cecena said, laughing. “Just to give you an idea: of all the Dierbergs' locations, this property is one of their most successful.” Starting off at the ripe old age of 16, Cecena began a long-time career by learning how to repair clocks and watches. “By 18, I was taking it seriously,” he said.
Cecena’s offers all different kinds of jewelry from fine to custom to “fun stuff.” Carrying all the standards in earrings and pendants, they have contemporary designs plus the mainstream. While sterling silver is always a best seller, yellow gold is making a strong comeback especially with younger people. Even wedding rings are going back to yellow gold - good news for baby boomers whose rings are now back in style! “For sure, our forte is definitely bridal,” Cecena said. “Working with these young couples is very exciting for us – it’s really fun to be a part of this big move they are about to make.”
Cecena's is now known throughout the area not only as a full-service shop but also as quite the creative custom jeweler. He tells customers “the sky’s the limit. I know that sounds corny, but it’s true. Often a customer walks in with a loose stone of some kind and just says, ‘make me something pretty – I trust ya!’”
The pandemic has caused changes, but only for the better. "COVID has changed the way people think when it comes to local businesses," Cecena said. "We survived just fine because people are shopping local more than ever. The store had a great holiday season.
Son Ryan, the third generation, is involved in the business, which really “happened by accident,” Cecena said. “He worked here part-time for gas money while he was in school, but it just fell in place. And now he’s such an important part of the company’s success as far as repairs – he carries a lot of responsibility.”
“Our work here is so gratifying – it really is. It’s nice to make a difference to someone by repairing something special or an heirloom. Now that we have been in business for so long, we've seen kids grow up, get married and then their kids grow up and get married,” Cecena said. “I can’t imagine ever doing anything else.”
Obviously enjoying each other’s company, the family works together every day alongside staff member and friend Pamela Herbeck. “We actually do all get along. I think by turning off the family buttons while we’re at work helps a lot,” Cecena said. “A lot of people can’t grasp that concept, but it works for us and when we walk out the door it’s back to family.”
Visit Cecena's Jewelry at 3930 Green Mount Crossing Drive next to Dierbergs in Shiloh; (618) 632-7330; www.cecenasjewelry.com.

Housing Market Forecast: 2022 Edition By Tricia Tialdo, REALTOR, Broker, Strano & Associates
Mortgage rates are projected to steadily increase yet remain historically low compared to decades past. However, this gradual uptick in interest rates will affect affordability by raising the monthly cost of homeownership in all price ranges.
I
n 2021, homeowners saw an atypical housing market in which their properties sold quickly and often above the asking prices, as many homebuyers competed for the winning bid. All in all, 2021’s housing frenzy was nothing short of one for the books! Fast forward to 2022. Both homebuyers and sellers are asking: What will this year’s housing market look like? Home sales are expected to perform well again in 2022. Remote work options continue to have a huge impact on the housing market. This will aid in expanding search areas as homeowners relocate to find more space and affordable housing options. The trend of millennials moving to the suburbs is also expected to continue with homebuyers looking for communities that offer home offices, amenities and room to grow.
I Deliver Dreams!
Many industry experts expect the number of homes for sale to increase this year as homeowners continue to look to move and investors sell off rental properties, taking advantage of the high prices. This should give buyers a slightly better chance to snag the home of their dreams. But experts warn the growth in inventory will be slow, thus still constituting challenges for buyers. Overall, 2022 is expected to be a year of steady growth. The market looks to continue to favor sellers due to forecasted levels of buyer demand combined with limited supply. Also, experts predict a continuation of increased housing values. But as we’ve witnessed firsthand, things can change on a dime. Current events can directly affect the real estate market and economy. So buckle up and stay tuned. The world of housing is a wild ride!

A New Year Brings New Opportunities For Better Health Use Delicious Spices To Replace Sodium In Your Diet
Y
our spice drawer is a treasure chest of zippy, zesty, sweet, savory and spicy flavors. One of the best qualities of herbs and spices is the variety of flavors you can add to foods without adding salt. Here’s a how-to guide on the flavor profiles of common spices and how to season with them.
Rosemary
Basil
Smoked Paprika
• Tastes somewhat sweet, earthy. • Delicious Pairings: Any Italian food like meatless lasagna or pasta with red sauce; Thai food like a stir fry with lots of veggies and sprinkled with peanuts; fruit like berries, peaches or apricots. • Extra Tip: Add dried to a dish at least 15 minutes before they are done cooking for full flavor. Add fresh right before serving to avoid flavor loss or wilting.
Curry Powder
• Is a blend of spices usually including coriander, fenugreek, turmeric, cumin and others. • Delicious Pairings: Indian food like lentil potato stew; breakfast veggie and egg scramble; whole grains like brown rice or quinoa with cilantro; and tuna with celery and no-added sugar low-fat yogurt for a delicious sandwich. • Extra Tip: Some curry powder can be hot and spicy. If you prefer a milder one (or a hotter one) look up a recipe online and make your own mix from spices in your spice drawer.
Cumin
• Tastes toasty and earthy with a little spice. • Delicious Pairings: Mexican food like black bean salsa or refried beans; fish such as tilapia, especially in fish tacos; and root vegetables. • Extra Tip: Cumin is also part of the Indian spice mix garam masala. Delicious when paired with coriander in Mexican or Indian food.
• Tastes woody. • Delicious Pairings: Roasted meats like chicken, pork, lamb or salmon; mushrooms, raw or cooked; whole grain bread; and butternut squash or pumpkin. • Extra Tip: Long sticks of fresh rosemary can be used to brush marinades on meat or as a skewer stick for grilled kabobs. • Tastes smoky and woody. • Delicious Pairings: Egg dishes; spice rubs for meats or even tofu; in fruit salsas like mango; and tomato sauce. • Extra Tip: Use it to add the smokiness of bacon to any dish without the extra fat or salt.
Thyme
• Tastes earthy. • Delicious Pairings: Any bean dish; blends well with bay leaves, parsley or lemon zest; and roasted vegetables. • Extra Tip: Lightly crush dried leaves between your fingers when adding to a dish to release the flavor.
Cinnamon
• Tastes sweet and spicy. • Delicious Pairings: Whole grain muffins, waffles, pancakes or breads; and fruit crisps with oatmeal topping. Greek meat dishes like lamb or beef stew with oregano and onions. • Extra Tip: The natural sweetness means you can cut the amount of sugar in some recipes. For more information on the critical link between vision and learning, Dr. Unger can be contacted at 618-655-EYES (3937) or visit the web site at readingandvision.com.
Such concerns could be attributed to a deficit in vision required for learning. A child’s 20/20 vision is not enough. Any one of the above symptoms is a sign that an eye exam is needed from a developmental optometrist. Eye Doctor Helps Legally Blind To See
F
High Technology For Low Vision Patients Helps Many To Drive Again
or many patients with macular degeneration and other vision-related conditions, the loss of central visual detail also signals the end to one of the last bastions of independence: driving. A Mascoutah optometrist, Dr. Marianne McDaniel, is using miniaturized telescopes that are mounted in glasses to help people who have lost vision from macular degeneration and other eye conditions.
Nine out of 10 people who have macular degeneration have the dry form. New research suggests vitamins can help. The British medical journal BMC Ophthalmology recently reported that 50 percent of patients treated with a high-dose combination of vitamins experienced improved vision after six months. While age is the most significant risk factor for developing the disease, heredity, smoking, cardiovascular disease and high blood pressure have also been identified as risk factors.
Some patients consider Dr. Marianne McDaniel the last stop for people who have vision loss, one of only a few doctors in the world who specializes in fitting bioptic telescopes to help those who have lost vision due to macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, and other debilitating eye diseases.
Macular degeneration accounts for 90 percent of new legal blindness in the U.S. While there is currently no cure, promising research is being done on many fronts. "My job is to figure out everything and anything possible to keep a person functioning especially driving," said Dr. McDaniel.
Imagine a pair of glasses that can improve vision enough to actually change one's life. Low vision patients have probably not only imagined them, but have been searching for them. Bioptic telescopes may be the breakthrough in optical technology that will return the independence to whom once had it. Patients with vision in the 20/200 range can many times be improved to 20/50 or better. Macular degeneration is the leading cause of blindness and vision loss in people over 50. Despite this, most adults are not familiar with the condition. As many as 25 percent of those over the age of 50 have some degree of macular degeneration. The macula is only one small part of the retina; however, it is the most sensitive and gives us sharp central vision. When it degenerates, macular degeneration leaves a blind spot right in the center of vision, making it difficult or impossible to recognize faces, read a book, or pass the driver's vision test.
"Bioptic telescopes can cost over $2,000," she said, "especially if we build them with an automatic sunglass. The major benefit of the bioptic telescope is that the lens automatically focuses on whatever you're looking at. It's like a self-focusing camera, but more precise." To learn more about the bioptic telescopes or to schedule a consultation, give the office of Dr. Marianne McDaniel a call at (618) 566-8899 and visit www.mascoutaheyecare.com. The office is located at 100 East Main Street in Mascoutah.

Dry Eye Disease Is a Common, Treatable Condition
D • • • • • • • • • • •
ry Eyes are a part of the natural aging process. In fact, the majority of people over the age of 65 experience symptoms of Dry Eye. Patients are advised to seek treatment if they have any of the symptoms below: Blurry Vision Redness Burning Itching Light Sensitivity Excessive Tearing/Watery Eyes Tired Eyes/Eye Fatigue Stringy Mucus in or around the eyes Foreign Body Sensation Contact Lens Discomfort Scratchy feeling or Sand/Grit in eye
People that have Dry Eye Disease either do not produce enough tears or their tears are of such poor quality that they cannot lubricate and nourish the eye effectively. Tears are necessary for maintaining the health of the front of the surface of the eye and for providing clear vision.
Tears also provide lubrication, which reduces the risk of eye infection, washes away foreign matter in the eye and keeps the eyes smooth and clear. Dry Eye Disease can easily interfere with work and normal life activities if not treated. Factors that lead to Dry Eye Disease can include age, medications, refractive eye surgery, long-term use of contact lenses and medical conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis, diabetes, thyroid problems and inflammation of the eyelids. Other factors can also be associated with doing every day tasks like staring at computer screens, televisions, or electronic readers for long periods of time. In addition, things like exposure to air conditioning, wind, smoke and dry climates contribute to Dry Eye. Untreated Dry Eye Disease can lead to permanent damage to the lids, eye and vision. However, the good news is that by properly diagnosing the type of Dry Eye Disease early on there are successful treatments including supplements, warm compresses, lid cleansers, drops and now a natural Intense Pulse Light therapy. Drs. Thomas and Alice Unger in Troy and Edwardsville have the technology to provide patients with a comprehensive eye exam to evaluate, test and treat Dry Eye Disease. Gateway PGA HOPE Seeks To Help Local Veterans Through The Game Of Golf
R
elatively new to the game of golf, Belleville residents Bob Rosner and his wife, Nancy Bakay, have found not only a love of conquering the links, but also a niche as PGA tournament volunteers with PGA HOPE (Helping Our Patriots Everywhere) that is the flagship military program of PGA REACH - the charitable foundation of the PGA of America. PGA HOPE introduces golf to Veterans with disabilities to enhance their physical, mental, social and emotional well-being. Sadly, Veteran suicide is a major issue in the Veteran community and statistics show 22 Veterans a day commit suicide. PGA HOPE is working to change this statistic by utilizing the game of golf as a form of therapy. There are currently 162 PGA HOPE programs across the country, hosted in 38 participating PGA Sections (geographical). The local section is called the Gateway Section including four participating courses in Missouri; one in Springfield, Ill.; and Arlington Greens in Granite City of which Veteran Rosner and Bakay are graduates of and now work as PGA Gateway Ambassadors spreading the word to others who may benefit from learning the game of golf. They also have had the opportunity to work at various PGA events around the country as attendants who help with crowd control, moving players from holeto-hole, keeping score and more. Their first “job” was in 2018 at Bellerive; among others was 2019 at Bethpage in New York, 2021 Ocean Course on Kiawah, SC and they are planning to help out this year at Southern Hills in Tulsa, OK. There have been others, but the biggest kick for Rosner was walking all 18 with Phil Mickelson during a practice round - “and then he won the tournament that week!” For fun, the pair likes to travel a few days ahead of the tournament in their camper to get a feel for the area and the course. The PGA HOPE program introduces the game of golf through a developmental six week curriculum, taught by PGA Professionals trained in adaptive golf and military cultural competency. All programs are funded by PGA REACH and supplemented by PGA Section Foundations, so the cost of programming is free to all Veterans. Here in the St. Louis metropolitan area, Veterans are invited to the beginning of the program starting at Jefferson Barracks in February for the six weeks of lessons where participants learn all the fundamentals of golf such as driving, chipping, putting and proper etiquette. Since 2011, Gateway PGA HOPE has impacted 200 Veterans locally. Instructors in the St. Louis area include Adaptive Golf Certified PGA Professionals: PGA professional and veteran Sam Gilliland; Brian Maine, PGA professional at Whitmoor Country Club in St. Charles County; and Mark Marcuzzo, PGA professional and golf course manager at Arlington Greens in Granite City. Guest instructors throughout the six weeks may include local PGA professionals John DePriest and Dan Polites. Following the six weeks of lessons (mostly in a warm gym), the golfers get to step out on the course and put into action what they have learned. In the Metro East, Arlington Greens welcomes these Veterans every year where the then-
beginner golfers play in a Thursday morning league that is also free of charge. Everyone pitches in $5 per week and at the end of the league’s season they play the Patriot Cup Tournament and Celebration where the money is then divided according to points earned per golfer. Soulcial Kitchen By Lynn Venhaus, Contributing Writer
Currently, the food trucks include A Fine Swine championship barbecue, El Guaqo Taco, and Soulcial Smash Burger Company. The Space Shuttle Café, a converted DC-3 airplane on wheels, landed on the parking lot in November. Chicken and pizza choices are coming later – such as Neo’s Wood-Fired Pizza and NashVegas Fried. The brick-and-mortar restaurant, which opened in October, offers barbecue, tacos, and burgers, with sides, as well as Daily Inspirations – chef specials, which include salad, soup, and sandwich of the day selections as well as a burger of the week and vegetable of the week.
T
he first mobile cloud kitchen platform in the Metro East continues to grow food concepts and its mission on its nearly three acres at 127 North Belt East in Swansea.
Soulcial Kitchen began last summer to offer customers variety, like a food hall. Now their commissary includes takeout, delivery, curbside, online ordering, catering, a fleet of food trucks and a restaurant with indoor and outdoor seating. John E. Michel and his wife Holly, who live in O’Fallon, created the hospitality business model to provide a unique experience. Besides distinctive food, they wanted Soulcial Kitchen to be both a business incubator and a charity-driven mission. Michel, a retired U.S. Air Force Brigadier General, is a former fighter pilot who is an award-winning author and motivational speaker. He was a partner in Minute Man Hamburger restaurants in Arkansas, which involves Veterans in the operations.
Inside, they can serve 60-70 people, and with the outside patio, about 100. The head chef is Chris Stein, a graduate with honors of the prestigious Culinary Institute of America and a native of Southern Illinois. Previous experience includes working for the Wrigley Family’s Santa Catalina Island Company and in the kitchens of Niche and Sidney Street Café in St. Louis under James Beard awardwinning chefs Gerard Craft and Kevin Nasham. Stein said he was excited to join the Soulcial Kitchen team. “Not only are they on the culinary cutting edge, I believe in their mission of giving back to the community,” he said. The complex includes a beer garden, dog park and grounds for family gatherings. To make it an overall experience, plans for a covered pavilion for music, kids’ activities, fun and games are in the works. Michel said flexibility is key. These plans were set in motion when he connected with David Stidham, now chief operating officer, who previously ran A Fine Swine

If you see someone in need, hand them a coin, and they can exchange it for a meal. They also launched a “Love Thy Neighbor” initiative in November, partnering with local businesses to either offer 100 free hot and nutritious meals by taking a food truck into an underserved vulnerable neighborhood in need or support a nonprofit organization serving on the front lines. The first partner was Blue Stingray, a custom software company in St. Louis. Michel is adamant about their goal of giving back and making a difference, adding community initiatives as they go. “At a time in our nation’s history where many of our fellow citizens are struggling or facing difficult circumstances, ‘Love Thy Neighbor’ is a simple and tangible way to demonstrate compassion, care, and kindness to those most in need, in our midst,” he said. BBQ restaurants in New Baden and Mount Vernon for five years, and had been a marketing executive with Culver’s.
Another first – in the country, is their implementation of a food truck apprenticeship program that provides training and hands-on experience for cooks who are looking to break into the food truck business.
Stidman’s specialty is championship pulled pork, which won a Memphis in May international competition trophy in 2017. Signature sandwiches, The Hogfather and The Beefeater, are on the menu, as are pit beans, loaded potato salad and mac ‘n cheese. Pitmaster specials rotate – such as championship ribs, fork-tender pork steaks and burnt ends.
“I am focused on building the business,” Michel said. “We are going to be offering great opportunities, especially for small business entrepreneurs. We can cross train people. We have incentives to grow with us.”
Co-founder Stidman said they introduced smoked barbecued meats into the El Guaqo Taco food truck. “Beef barbacoa tacos, grilled chicken asada tacos, and smoked pork carnitas tacos are regular features, with pork belly tacos with grilled pineapple salsa and avocado crema as one of the surprise recurring specials. Our head chef developed the menu, and he has such strong chops, I guarantee you his carnitas tacos will make you want to cry. I sure did,” he said.
For more information about Soulcial Kitchen, its menu, programs, catering and booking food trucks, and contact information, visit soulcialkitchen.com. To find out the weekly specials, visit their Facebook page.
What they have learned throughout the COVID-19 pandemic helped them navigate the current challenges of the restaurant business. “The restaurant industry has been undergoing a transformation in both expectation and presentation for years, and the pandemic only accelerated the growth of key trends such as delivery, pickup, mobile, and drive through,” Michel said. He said the quality of their food and the concepts have helped build momentum during the complex’s infancy. Please join us for an evening of music, cocktails, dinner, and auctions to benefit MindsEye.
“It’s the versatility of the model,” Michel said. Another major focus is to reduce food insecurity through its “Currency of Caring” meal-token program. The team wants to be in service to others. “The food is the medium. The mission is the message. That’s the secret. That’s the bigger idea,” he said. “So far, it’s been phenomenal.” The prepaid coins may be purchased for $8 each at Soulcial Kitchen or the website. “It is a dignified, unique ‘Pay it Forward’ meal program designed to create a simplified means of providing a variety of hot meals to Metro East residents in need,” Michel said.
