Hearthside Brings Warmth To The Holidays Donate A Toy At The Store And Help Provide Joy To Local, Hospitalized Kids

W

ith the holidays and cooler weather just before us, Hearthside has a large selection of gas, wood-burning and electric fireplaces that will warm the heart as much as the toes. Of course the company, with a gorgeous showroom in Belleville, has all the top brands: "Empire, Heatilator, Quadra-Fire, Vermont Castings, Monessen, Golden Blount, Jotul, Dimplex and Simplifier," said owner Mark Urban. "It's that time of year when our clients are thinking about updating for the holidays and before winter sets in," he said. "Adding a direct vent gas insert can transform an existing masonry fireplace into a beautiful and efficient heat source for your home. Some customers say they can even turn off the furnace to save on energy costs. There is no mess with the convenience to light your new fireplace with the click of a remote!" Home owners can rest assured as Hearthside has a full-time staff of installers that are factory trained and certified by their manufacturing partners with a combined experience of 60-plus years. Regarding the pandemic, Urban would like to thank his customers who purchased from Hearthside online during the 10-week mandated closure. "We are grateful to have new and familiar faces coming into the showroom everyday!" Urban continued, "Our biggest concern is having the product in stock to help our customers. We were happy to sell gas fire pits and umbrellas to our local restaurants, and now we are filling their propane tanks for outdoor dining. These are the businesses hurting the worst. Please support our local restaurants." Hearthside has Weber, the Big Green Egg and Traeger grills - all the best choices in the business. Also, Urban hopes that grill enthusiasts will keep an eye on spring outdoor grill demonstrations led by the leaders of grilling techniques.

Hearthside also showcases all manner of grilling accessories perfect for the outdoor chef: tool sets, rubs, sauces, pizza stones, cookbooks, rib racks and so much more. For the chef who has everything, check out the digital and wifi thermometers. Of course, there are gift certificates available. Another, and important, aspect of Hearthside is the wonderful, charitable project started by niece Kenzie Scott: Fire Truck O'Toys. As a small child, Kenzie was diagnosed with a degenerative bone disease called Leggs-Calves Perthes. During her treatment time in both SSM Cardinal Glennon and St. Louis Children’s hospitals, she noticed many children and families missing the opportunity to share in the joy of the holidays. Thus she founded the non-for-profit Fire Truck O'Toys. It has since been her mission to make sure every hospitalized child and family receives that joy in the form of the simplest of gifts at Christmas – a toy! Fire Truck O'Toys is blessed to be in its 10th year and thankful to the generous community as over 37,000 toys have been delivered to six local children's hospitals. There are many great ways to donate, including dropping off new, unwrapped toys at Hearthside. Fire Truck O'Toys is also asking for monetary donations. As always, every dollar donated will go directly to the purchase of toys for hospitalized kids. As a 501(c)3, the organization can make every one of those donations go further by buying and delivering toys directly to the hospitals: That makes donating even easier. Just go to the secure PayPal page under the "donate" page at www.firetruckotoys.org. For more information about Fire Truck O'Toys, please visit www.firetruckotoys. org. And please visit the Hearthside showroom at 418 South Belt East, just east of the Belleville fairgrounds 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday. Call (618) 257-0700, visit hearthsidegrill.com or stop by the showroom to warm up and say "Hi!"

Three Remodeling Projects To Reenergize Your Home By David Padgett , HBR Remodelers Council Chair

A

s cooler weather approaches, let it be the inspiration to tackle a few home improvement projects? Remodeling the home can payoff in personal enjoyment and comfort, and improve the value of the home. Contact a professional remodeler to provide guidance on home improvement projects that will increase the home’s resell value.

can make recommendations on finishes that will boost home value. A remodeler can also provide advice on what to consider when replacing countertops, creating custom cabinets, flooring and appliances. For example, energy-efficient appliances are among the popular features home buyers seek out when considering purchasing a new home.

High-impact projects that can revamp the home include curb-appeal enhancements, kitchen renovations and bathroom improvements.

Not all kitchens need a complete overhaul. Replacing dated lighting fixtures, faucets or sinks makes a difference in design. Other design upgrades such as new window treatments, cabinet hardware or a fresh coat of paint can spruce up the kitchen.

Improve The Home’s Exterior

The color scheme of a home’s exterior and cleanliness of the yard makes a big impact on curb appeal. If needed, consider purchasing a new garage door to give the home a facelift. The front door also makes an important first impression: A fresh color of paint, window trim or siding is a simple way to create an inviting look to the exterior.

Bathroom Improvements

Landscape or clean up the yard. A mixture of different colored plants and heights will enrich a yard. If a walkway is cracked or dated, replace the path with new flagstones or outdoor lighting. Adding a fountain or water feature is another way to take the landscape to the next level.

Renovate The Kitchen

A modern kitchen is not only a space for cooking. Kitchens are a central hub for home entertaining and sharing meals. A professional remodeler

Cosmetic updates to a bathroom can be as simple as replacing dated fixtures and lighting. Freshen up a bathroom by re-grouting tile or removing and replacing caulk around the tub and sink. Adding a fresh coat of paint, similar to the kitchen or home exterior, makes a difference in brightening up the bathroom. A professional remodeler can also add storage with cabinets or shelves.

For Your Health: Preparing for Healthy Holidays By Dr. Graham A. Colditz, Siteman Cancer Center

T

he crisper days announce that the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays are getting close. It’s a wonderful time for enjoying comforting food and connecting with family and friends. It’s also going to feel different because of the pandemic.

With COVID-19 rates remaining high, it’s important to keep families, friends and ourselves as safe and healthy as possible through the coming holidays. Below are tips to consider while making plans and to-do lists. Some relate directly to the coronavirus, others to health in general.

Celebrate safely

Thanksgiving and Christmas often means a big sit-down meal with close family, distant cousins and old friends. But a classic indoor gathering also increases the risk of spreading the coronavirus. If just one person has the virus – even if he or she doesn’t feel sick – it can easily spread to others. A safer way to celebrate is to have a smaller Thanksgiving meal just with family members who live together. Connect with others by coordinating and enjoying the mealtime over a group phone call or video chat. Record it for those who can’t take part. It won’t be the same, but it will still be meaningful. Other safety guidelines and ideas from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention are at bit.ly/HolidaysCDC and bit.ly/ActivitiesCDC.

Check in on the extended family’s health

“The holidays are a time when we check in with extended family members, even if we can’t be together in person,” said Bettina Drake, associate director of community outreach and engagement at Siteman Cancer Center at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis. Part of that can be catching up on their health and well-being. Drake suggests three ways to do that:

“It’s safe to say most of us are tired of pandemic life, and with some of our favorite holidays coming up, it’s tempting to take a break from precautions and celebrate like we would normally. But it’s important that we keep taking steps to stay safe and healthy, and to curb the coronavirus outbreak,” Drake said. “Yes, the holidays will be different this year. But different doesn’t have to mean worse. With a little extra effort, they can still be special, meaningful and offer a chance to connect with loved ones.”

It’s your family’s health. Take control. Additional resources

Bettina Drake, associate director of community outreach and engagement at Siteman Cancer Center, recommends these other websites for more information: Family history basics: bit.ly/FamHistoryCDC; Cancer screenings and COVID-19: bit.ly/ScreeningsAndCovidACS; Healthy behaviors: 8ways.wustl.edu. Dr. Graham A. Colditz, associate director of prevention and control at Siteman Cancer Center at Barnes-Jewish Hospital and Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, is an internationally recognized leader in cancer prevention. As an epidemiologist and public health expert, he has a long-standing interest in the preventable causes of chronic disease. Colditz has a medical degree from The University of Queensland and a master’s and doctoral degrees in public health from Harvard University’s T.H. Chan School of Public Health.

• Ask relatives (and friends) how they’re doing, especially if they live alone, and see if there’s anything they need. • If some have missed doctor’s appointments or screenings because of the pandemic, encourage them to contact their health-care providers about getting back on track. Help them make an appointment, even. • Update family health history for relatives to share at their next doctor visits. If a disease like cancer or heart disease runs in the family, there may be steps that can help reduce or manage the risk.

Keep up with healthy behaviors

Combine the busy holidays with shorter, colder days – plus a global pandemic – and it’s really easy to get knocked off regular health and self-care routines. But for overall well-being, it’s important to stay physically active, eat healthy food, get enough sleep and just take some time to re-energize. It’s not always easy to do – and can take some creativity these days – but it can also have real benefits.

Eye Doctor Helps Legally Blind To See

F

High Technology For Low Vision Patients Helps Many To Drive Again

or many patients with macular degeneration and other vision-related conditions, the loss of central visual detail also signals the end to one of the last bastion of independence: driving. A Mascoutah optometrist, Dr. Marianne McDaniel, is using miniaturized telescopes that are mounted in glasses to help people who have lost vision from macular degeneration and other eye conditions.

Nine out of 10 people who have macular degeneration have the dry form. New research suggests vitamins can help. The British medical journal BMC Ophthalmology recently reported that 50 percent of patients treated with a high-dose combination of vitamins experienced improved vision after six months. While age is the most significant risk factor for developing the disease, heredity, smoking, cardiovascular disease and high blood pressure have also been identified as risk factors.

Some patients consider Dr. Marianne McDaniel the last stop for people who have vision loss, one of only a few doctors in the world who specializes in fitting bioptic telescopes to help those who have lost vision due to macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, and other debilitating eye diseases.

Macular degeneration accounts for 90 percent of new legal blindness in the U.S. While there is currently no cure, promising research is being done on many fronts. "My job is to figure out everything and anything possible to keep a person functioning especially driving," said Dr. McDaniel.

Imagine a pair of glasses that can improve vision enough to actually change one's life. Low vision patients have probably not only imagined them, but have been searching for them. Bioptic telescopes may be the breakthrough in optical technology that will return the independence to whom once had it. Patients with vision in the 20/200 range can many times be improved to 20/50 or better. Macular degeneration is the leading cause of blindness and vision loss in people over 50. Despite this, most adults are not familiar with the condition. As many as 25 percent of those over the age of 50 have some degree of macular degeneration. The macula is only one small part of the retina; however, it is the most sensitive and gives us sharp central vision. When it degenerates, macular degeneration leaves a blind spot right in the center of vision, making it difficult or impossible to recognize faces, read a book, or pass the driver's vision test.

"Bioptic telescopes can cost over $2,000," she said, "especially if we build them with an automatic sunglass. The major benefit of the bioptic telescope is that the lens automatically focuses on whatever you're looking at. It's like a self-focusing camera, but more precise." To learn more about the bioptic telescopes or to schedule a consultation, give the office of Dr. Marianne McDaniel a call at (618) 566-8899 and visit www.mascoutaheyecare.com. The office is located at 100 East Main Street in Mascoutah.

Also, have fun with various sizes and scales of ornaments and decorations sitting about the house. “Different sizes keeps things interesting and please don't fill every corner, nook and cranny with Christmas décor,” she said. “Less is always more!” Decide what you are going to use and if there are items in your collection that you haven’t used lately, donate to a shelter or service organization where they can give another family great joy. Or, keep half of your collection and donate the other: “It feels good!” Areas of the house that make the biggest impact for your holiday décor: • Entry Door and Porch • Tree – any size pine tree or use a large houseplant! • Fireplace Mantle • Dining Room Table • Windows

L

ocal interior designer Kay Kendall provided some great ideas for Christmas decorating on a budget. “Every few years, it’s time to regroup, rethink and recreate new ideas using your existing or recycled holiday decorations,” she said. “Go green!” First of all, “Make a plan! Before you drag everything out of storage, it's helpful if you decide on a theme,” Kendall said.

A few ideas to consider: Toyland, Old Fashioned, Rustic, Santa, Country, Victorian, Patriotic, Modern or Eclectic Mix, Artsy or whimsical Secondly, keep it simple. “Don't overwhelm yourself by trying to use everything you have or driving all over in search of the perfect items,” Kendall said. “Pick your favorite items for your theme and add some bold color combinations (this is great for the colored glass tree bulbs).”

Finally, “decorating should be fun,” Kendall said. “Embellish some of your existing ornaments such as glass bulbs and wreaths. Kids love to help decorate with glitter, jewels, ribbons, photos, clay pots, candies and cookies. Let them take past or existing holiday cards and make ornaments or wall hangings out of them.” For more ideas and tips from Kay Kendall Interior Design, call (618) 567-6008; email Kay.Kendallinteriors@norcom2000.com. Her design services include residential, commercial, healthcare, institutional, marine and aircraft.
