T
he pool featured on the cover is by Outdoor Systems, Inc., Columbia, that was designed and installed with relaxation in mind. This project offers ease of use, operation and most importantly, energy efficiency. The pool was created to give the customer everything needed for relaxation: a layout bench in the shallow end to soak up the sun; a deeper end to lie on a raft; and a slide for kids of all ages. Water features on this pool include shear descents, deck jets and LED Laminars. When the sun goes down, there are fire bowls to add an extra touch of ambiance. This was a challenging pool because of the many automated features, which is why a smart touch system was installed to control everything at once. With the touch of a button, the customers can turn on the firepot, water features, pool lights and even the water slide. The smart touch system can be on the homeowner’s smart phone or tablet.
like a paver patio, fireplace, outdoor kitchen, pergola or pavilion. We even do projects where we work off a design that is phased out over several years to meet the constraints of a family’s budget.” He said they might “construct the outdoor kitchen and fireplace one year, then add a waterfall the next and finish up with a pool, paver patio and pool deck. My state-of-the-art 3D design software allows me to take the customer on a ‘fly-through’ of the entire space before one shovel hits the ground.” During this last year, Flowers has been doing a lot of pool rehab as well: liner changes, replumbing pools, sandblasting and replaster work, and tile and coping replacement. The company also offers a full line of white marcite, pebble finishes and glass-bead finishes for concrete pools. “Liner changes and plaster work are mostly a necessity, but I see homeowners thrilled at the sight of the finished product,” he said. The additional value with Outdoor Systems’ services is the customer will deal with only one company throughout the entire process from design to installation and service. And “we care about quality!”
While Outdoor Systems is building many pools with fancy features and gadgets, they are also building more simple pool designs in the $30,000 range. “I think the main reason customers like using us is because we listen and then deliver,” Outdoor Systems owner Dan Flowers said. “If it’s not exactly right, we make it right. And we get repeat customers because of this policy. Repeat customers usually call to make an addition to the back yard
Outdoor Systems, Inc. is one company, one contact and one great product. The company offers warranties on their work and is available for projects anywhere in the Metro East and St. Louis. Other extended regions include Lake of the Ozarks. Please call Dan Flowers at (618) 281-8270 or visit www. outdoorsystemsinc.com.

Create It – Reveal It | My Scratch Offs, LLC Delivers Unique Promotional Product
F
ollowing a career in the Air Force, Karen Sroka and her husband, Ron, who is also retiring from the Air Force next year, knew they wanted to stay right here in the Metro East and raise their family. Wanting her own business, Sroka began looking for the right fit. Knowing that scratch off promotional products were quite popular with giant companies like McDonald’s for example, she searched for the product online.
off at check-out time and then discovering if you get 10%, 20% or 30% off. Really, the sky’s the limit when it comes to what kinds of offers are available. My Scratch Offs, LLC has over 38 different shapes, sizes and colors to choose from and creating a custom scratch off is easy and available as well. These unique, promotional items are great for fund raisers rather than the usual raffle ticket for prizes or 50/50, too. Scratch offs add that element of anticipation and can actually raise more funds for the organization.
“I came across the scratch off product online and through the course of my research I realized that consumers were not aware that it’s available to anyone in any size quantity,” she said. “Most companies require a minimum order, so we opened My Scratch Offs, LLC as an alternative to provide both individual customers and small businesses with a valuable solution. Our minimum order required is as little quantity as 100. If you would like to purchase large quantity orders at wholesale, we can do that, too.” Some of the many fun ways to use scratch offs are as save the date cards for special occasions such as weddings. “These are becoming very popular as are the ‘genderreveal’ cards to add that element of suspense when it’s received in the mail,” Sroka said. They are also great for business promotions such as getting a scratch
Customers are invited to use the web site at www.myscratchoffs. com and to stop by the newly appointed office where you can meet the staff and see their 3 million scratch offs in stock! They are happy to give a tour and demonstrate how the machine – affectionately known as Stan The Labeler – works. There are even ways for the do-it-yourselfer to create their own exciting scratch offs. “We can do as much or as little as the customer needs,” Sroka said.

Help pets breathe a little easier The men and women working at Spengler Plumbing, Heating and Cooling are often called heroes for coming to the rescue during a time of need by homeowners. But they realize that there are real heroes in our communities. As a company full of pet lovers and animal shelter adopters, Spengler wants to recognize the real heroes, who save pets everyday. This August Spengler launched the Spengler Shelter Saver campaign to benefit local animal shelters. Spengler is dedicated to making sure every member of the family, including the four legged kind, have a working HVAC system. We realize how critical a working HVAC system can be, particularly for our furry friends. We also know that there are never enough funds to make needed improvements at local animal shelters. As such, Spengler will be donating an HVAC system and air purification system, valued at $10,000, to one deserving animal shelter in one of the communities we serve.
In order to determine the winner of the HVAC and air purification system Spengler is conducting an online voting contest. All animal shelters/rescues located in the Illinois counties of Madison, Monroe, St. Clair and Clinton are eligible to win. In addition to the first place prize, the top five shelters with the greatest number of votes will also receive an air purification system valued at $2500. All registered shelters receiving at least one vote will be presented with a $250 gift certificate for Spengler services. Voting runs Monday, August 11th through Thursday, August 28th. Supporters can vote once every five minutes. Winners will be announced via the Spengler website at noon on August 29th. During the month of August, Spengler will also be promoting pet adoption to their customers and encouraging them to adopt from a shelter. The Men of Spengler (as featured in our 2014 calendar) will be making appearances at adoption events and awarding a free Fall furnace precision tune-ups to anyone who adopts a pet during August. If you would like to have the Spengler team to assist with your adoption events during August, please contact them at 618.623.0572.

Hospice of Southern Illinois Provides Compassionate Care To Patients And Their Families
The Mission of Hospice of Southern Illinois is to enhance the quality of life for individuals and their loved ones touched by a terminal illness.
H
ospice of Southern Illinois is a free-standing, community-based hospice program serving 27 counties in Southern Illinois, including all of the St. Louis Metro-East. With over 30 years of experience providing hospice care exclusively, Hospice of Southern Illinois is a not-for-profit organization that provides care regardless of the patient's insurance coverage or ability to pay.
The hospice team provides care to patients in their own home, nursing home, assisted living or in the home-like setting of Relais Bonne Eau – the first hospice home in Southern Illinois. Developed and designed for individuals and their families in need of end-of-life care, the home is located in Edwardsville on 17 beautiful acres offering a quiet and serene setting.
Faced with a terminal illness, Hospice is a special healthcare option for patients and families. A multi-disciplinary team of full-time staff physician Dr. Ellen Middendorf, several part-time physicians, staff nurses, hospice aides, social workers, bereavement counselors and volunteers works together to address the physical, social, emotional and spiritual needs of each patient and family.
Patients are eligible for hospice care when they have been diagnosed with a terminal illness with a prognosis of 6 months or less. At that time comfort care and symptom management become the primary focus, and curative treatment is no longer the patient’s choice or option. The average length of time that hospice care is provided is about 21 days.
Hospital and Community Health Liaison Leigh Sindelar works closely with each patient, their families and other hospital staff so “everyone is on the same page. Everything can happen so fast and I can be a familiar face to help everyone involved,” she said. “I am always there for our patients.”
While visiting nurses provide medical and emotional education to the family in the home, volunteers at Hospice are ready to come visit with the patient whether it’s just talking or playing cards, or simply being there when the family member may need to run an errand or take care of other business.
14 | Marketplace Magazine | Early Fall Issue 2014 | marketplacemagazineonline.com
“So many family members tell us ‘I wish I would have found you earlier,’” said Sindelar. “One man said, “You allowed me to be the ‘son’ and not the caregiver,’ which makes a world of difference for people in this difficult time.” The staff at Hospice is passionate and caring, “it’s not a normal work setting,” said Kathy Wilson, events coordinator, smiling. “It’s such a privilege to work here and meet these families who allow us into their homes.” “We are totally patient based,” said Christine Litteken, print and social media coordinator, “but if we ever feel like we are losing that sense of why we are here, we go out with a nurse and visit a patient to keep us working hard for who it’s all about: the patients and families.” Hospice of Southern Illinois is unique in that it is one of only two not-for-profit organizations of its kind in the region. All other hospice companies in the region are for-profit. Hospice care is a covered service under Medicare Part A and the Illinois Medicaid benefit. Most insurance companies have hospice benefits. Check your policy or with your local agent to determine the provisions of your policy. The availability of Medicare/Medicaid or private insurance is not a criterion for admission to Hospice of Southern Illinois. “We also receive very generous financial support from the communities we serve, including memorials and donations of friends, families and corporations, that allow Hospice of Southern Illinois to provide care to all patients and families,” said Kathy Wilson, Event Coordinator. “Our strongest support actually comes from those community members who have needed hospice for their own loved one.” The best time to learn about hospice is before you need it. At any time during a terminal illness, it is appropriate to discuss all of a patient's healthcare options, including hospice care. For more information on hospice, visit www.hospice.org or call Hospice of Southern Illinois at 800-233-1708.
Magnum is a Facility and Therapy dog with C.H.A.M.P. Assistance Dogs, Inc. He brings love and comfort to patients at Relais Bonne Eau.
Founder Donna Oplet, right, meets with members of the community including present-day Belleville Mayor Mark Eckert, left. Hospice of Southern Illinois, Inc. was founded in 1981 as Belleville Hospice by Donna Oplet - Donna’s daughter, Kim, works at Hospice today - with a commitment to provide hospice services to terminally ill patients and their families in the St. Louis MetroEast community. This commitment to provide hospice services to new areas grew until eventually the service area expanded to include the 27 counties in Southern Illinois. Since 1981, Hospice of Southern Illinois has served 35,000 families.

Flu Season
Q & A With Dr. Michael Mandis By Kelly Shanks r. Michael Mandis is an internist specializing in diabetes and hypertension. His new office is located southeast of Anderson Hospital and he is currently welcoming new patients. They also accept most insurances. As the fall weather approaches, Dr. Mandis hopes to educate the public on the particulars of the flu:

symptoms that can reduce the amount of time that you are sick and also make you less contagious to others. Other than this medication, you should rest and make sure that you are taking in plenty of fluids. Take Tylenol or Ibuprofen to help with body aches and fever.
What is the flu?
No. The term stomach flu is unrelated to true influenza. The stomach flu is a viral illness in the GI tract and the symptoms are vomiting and diarrhea. The treatment is a clear liquid diet to rest the GI system.
How do you get the flu?
To schedule an appointment, please call (618) 288-6136. The office is located at 2236 Vadalabene Dr., Suite 2 in Maryville just behind Anderson Hospital.
The flu (influenza) is a serious illness caused by a virus. The most common symptoms are fever, cough, congestion, and extreme, debilitating fatigue. Influenza is highly contagious and transmitted by contact with the virus. A person with influenza can spread the virus up to six feet away through a cough, sneeze or just speaking. People are contiguous one day before symptoms develop and five to seven days after becoming sick.
How can I avoid the flu?
The best way to avoid the flu is by getting a flu shot. It is important to wash hands often with soap and water. Non-porous surfaces coming in contact with an infected person should be disinfected regularly.
Can I get the flu from a flu shot?
No. The influenza vaccine is not capable of infecting you. There are side effects of the vaccine, which can include a sore arm and achiness. Sometimes, the vaccine coincides with a cold and patients think that they have gotten the flu from the shot. This is simply untrue. Influenza is also NOT caused by cold weather, its only cause is the influenza virus.
I have the stomach flu, is that the same thing?

Can I take antibiotics for the flu?
No. Not only are antibiotics not helpful for colds or the flu, they can actually harm you. Antibiotics are useful for bacterial infections, such as strep, bladder infections and staph infections of the skin. They should not be used for colds, flu, coughs, most ear infections or sore throats.
What can I do if I get the flu?
There is a medication that can be taken if given within the first 48 hours of the onset of Marketplace Magazine | Early Fall Issue 2014 | marketplacemagazineonline.com | 17

August is National Children’s Vision and Learning Month • short attention span • smart in everything but school • labeled ADD, ADHD, dyslexic • working below potential Any one of the above symptoms is a sign that you need to schedule a vision exam with a developmental optometrist. A Developmental Vision Evaluation is needed to test all of the visual skills critical to reading and learning: eye movement control, focusing near to far, sustaining clear focus, eye teaming ability, depth perception, visual motor integration, visual memory and visual perceptual skills. According to Dr. Thomas Unger, of Troy, “The good news is that unlike other disabilities, the majority of vision based learning problems can be fixed.” As children are headed back to school it’s time to take a moment to review how vision problems can interfere with a child’s ability to read and learn. One out of four children struggle with reading and learning because of undiagnosed vision problems: “60 percent of kids with learning disabilities have undiagnosed vision problems,” according to a conservative estimate from the American Optometric Association. Too often parents assume that if a child passes a vision screening that everything is fine with their eyes, and that couldn’t be further from the truth. Being able to see things clearly far away is no guarantee that a child can see things up close. In order to read, children not only have to see the letters clearly, but they have to be able to move their eyes easily from left to right (tracking) and be able to see for a long period of time.
For more information on the critical link between vision and learning, Dr. Unger can be contacted at (618) 667-2020 or visit his web site at www.ungereyecare.com.
From STRUGGLING...To SUCCESS! 1 out of 4 children struggle with reading and learning because of undiagnosed vision problems.
Does Your Child... • Dislike reading? • Skip or reread lines? • Prefer to be read to? • Lose place when reading? • Have trouble remembering what has been read? • Have difficulty paying attention? ADD/ADHD? • Make numbers/letter reversals? • Have reading /homework take longer than it should?
August is National Children’s Vision and Learning month to help bring attention to the critical role vision plays in a child’s education. Therefore it is vital that parents and educators know the signs that indicate that vision may be playing a role in their child’s difficulties: • headaches when reading • slow or incomplete copy work from board or paper • avoidance of reading • poor reading comprehension • frequent loss of place while reading • complains words move on the page
ELIMINATE DOUBT! If your child has any of the above symptoms, he or she may have a 100% correctable vision-based learning
problem. Children who once struggled go from failure to success when these vision problems are treated. Call us today to schedule a
Developmental Vision Evaluation.

Automated MicroNeedling:
Small Device, Big Changes
A
utomated Micro-Needling, or Collagen Induction Therapy, is a break-through in the Aesthetic Industry. The concept itself isn’t necessarily new, but it has been revolutionized into an innovative piece of technology. Back in the “old days,” microneedling consisted of a roller ball with tiny needles, which was manually rolled along the surface of the skin. Now the treatment has become automated within a mechanical device that systematically creates the microchannels as the device, or wand, is glided over the skin. The microchannels, or microscopic wounds, are the key to this treatment. As the body repairs these tiny wounds, it’s also stimulating collagen production and allowing products to penetrate a deeper level allowing for maximum efficiency. The production of collagen can continue for up to six months after the treatment. Acne scars? Lip lines? Nothing is too tough for this treatment. In fact, microneedling can even retexturize stretch marks on thighs and abdomen. Patients with hyperpigmentation, fine lines and wrinkles will also benefit from this treatment. Collagen Induction Therapy is also a great way to refresh the skin and get a glow. It’s safe enough to use on delicate areas such as around the eyes and mouth, and most
of the body including neck, décolleté, arms and back can be treated with a microneedling device. What happens during a treatment? Treatments take approximately 45 minutes depending on the extent of the treatment area. A skin care specialist will thoroughly cleanse your skin and then apply a layer of Hyaluronic Acid which helps glide the wand across the top of the skin. Does it hurt? This is a common question. Microneedling is slightly rougher than a microdermabrasion. For those who have not experienced a microdermabrasion, imagine the feeling of something coarse, like sandpaper. We will always work with each patient to ensure comfort during the treatment. What is the downtime? The best part of this treatment is the lack of downtime - no one will necessarily even notice you had anything done. (Except that your skin will be glowing!) Aside from a little redness for the first 24 hours, patients don’t experience peeling, swelling or burning associated with other cosmetic treatments. For maximum results, a series of three treatments is recommended and then maintenance treatments every four to six weeks thereafter. Ooh La La now offers the Eclipse MicroPen! Dr. Sharman Russell
Maryville Women’s Center Welcomes Dr. Sharman Russell To The Staff Maryville Women’s Center opened its doors in 1998 with a dream to provide all medical services for women…by women…in one convenient location.
might see a child with a broken arm in one room and perform a well woman’s exam in the next room. He did everything so I was able to learn so much.”
Founder Dr. Tina Gingrich grew up in the Metro East and began her medical training in St. Louis. She was recruited back home by Anderson Hospital to keep women on this side of the river by offering the same quality care that drew people to St Louis. She was also frustrated that women in the Metro East had to travel from one location to another to get their medical needs met.
She also was accepted to participate in the National Youth Leadership Forum for Medicine where students join the nation’s highest achieving high school scholars to gain real-world medical career experience and explore professional career opportunities in the expanding fields of medicine and health care. “Yes, I was one of those nerdy high school kids,” she laughed. “But I graduated from high school knowing that I wanted to be pre-med in college.”
After practicing for five years, the dream began to unfold. The three-story pink building at the corner of Highway 162 and 159 was built providing ultrasounds and a blood drawing station under the same roof where OB/GYN services were provided. In the meantime, Maryville Women’s Center has recruited women physicians, physician assistants, midwives and nurse practitioners, who are committed to serving the needs of women in this community. Just recently, yet another fine addition has been made with Dr. Sharman Russell who will begin accepting patients on September 1. Dr. Russell’s journey to Maryville Women’s Center has literally taken her across country from her hometown of Sacramento, Calif., to high school in tiny Driggs, Idaho where “there wasn’t even a stoplight” to Nashville, Chicago and now, Maryville. “I grew up active in all athletics and as there was just one doctor in Driggs I got to know him,” Dr. Russell said. “He really got me interested in medicine and let me shadow him while I was still in high school. Since he was the only doctor, he
Majoring in neuroscience at Vanderbilt University, Dr. Russell then attended Rosalind Franklin Medical School in Chicago where she first thought pediatrics would be her field of choice. “But then I realized I enjoyed surgery so I changed my emphasis to women’s health, which I knew would provide opportunities to actually be with a patient throughout her life,” she said. Residency took her to the University Kansas in Kansas City for four years. During this time, she married her husband and they now have twin baby girls who keep them quite busy. The move here was an easy choice; “My husband went to school in St. Louis and we have lots of friends here,” she said noting that her husband is at Anderson Hospital in Maryville in emergency medicine. “We love living in Maryville because of that small-town feel yet the proximity to St. Louis is just right.” Dr. Russell’s official start day at Maryville Women’s Center is September 1 and she is now accepting patients. Call today at (618) 288-2970 (ext. 114). The center is located at 2016 Vadalabene Drive in Maryville; www.mymwc.org.

First Woman
Federal Judge in the Southern
District of Illinois Was Confirmed In May
Judge Nancy Rosenstengel Makes History
A
fter 13 months from application to confirmation, the appointment of Metro East native Nancy Rosenstengel as federal judge in the Southern District of Illinois culminated on May 12, 2014. While this position is an extremely honorable accomplishment for any person, what sets Rosenstengel apart from her predecessors is that she is the first woman to serve in this capacity in the federal court for the Southern District of Illinois. “Nancy Rosenstengel will make an exceptional judge in the Southern District. Her confirmation is also an historic one. No woman has ever served as an Article III federal judge in the Southern District of Illinois,” said Sen. Dick Durbin in a statement announcing the confirmation. “I am sure she will do an outstanding job.” “I never dreamed – never even thought about – becoming a judge,” Rosenstengel said. “When I was approached and asked to think about applying for this position in 2012, I thought, ‘That’s crazy!’ I knew it would be an extreme honor, but I thought my chances were one in a million. In the end, everything really comes down to timing and luck. I’ve been fortunate to have great opportunities throughout my career, and I’ve always worked hard at every job I’ve had. I always tell my kids that you must work hard every day and always do your best. When you do that, doors open.” Certainly the gravity of this historic, lifetime appointment is not lost on Rosenstengel. However, she believes the time had come for a woman to be appointed to the bench. “It means a lot, of course, to be the first woman judge in our district. Last year, I read an article about the first woman judge in another district who was retiring after 30 years on the bench. I thought then, ‘It’s time to have a woman on the bench here in Southern Illinois,’” Rosenstengel said thoughtfully. “The bench should reflect the population.” The Southern District is slowly getting there. The second woman federal judge in the Southern District, Staci Yandle, will be sworn in this month. When the application process opened in April 2013, many people were discussing Rosenstengel as a potential candidate. She considered whether to apply at length with her husband, attorney Jon Rosenstengel. “I certainly did not want to send a message that I didn’t like what I was doing for the court already, because I really did. It was one of the hardest
decisions I have ever had to make,” she said. “I think that’s fairly common for women – we tend to doubt ourselves,” she continued, “while men are more likely to jump right in.” The career path of Rosenstengel began at the University of Illinois where she wasn’t sure what direction she wanted to take at first. With a love of writing in mind, she considered journalism and education. But after taking a sociology class with a favorite instructor, she discovered an aptitude for criminology and the study of people. It was at that point she decided to go to law school. “The best advice I ever received was to go to SIU School of Law. I knew I wanted to remain in the area, and it was a great education at a great price,” Rosenstengel said. During her second year of law school, she landed a summer job at a big firm in St. Louis, and by the end of the summer the firm had offered her a job upon graduation. “It was nice to know I already had a job waiting for me during my third year,” she said. This particular job was litigation, which she did for five years. “Litigation was very demanding, and by then Jon and I were married and thinking about a family. I started thinking I would like to be a law clerk – the person who does all the behind-the-scenes work for a judge – because I could still be in the courtroom and be exposed to a wide variety of cases. Judge Patrick Murphy had just been nominated for a federal judgeship. I applied, and he hired me. But by the time he was confirmed by the Senate, I was just one month from delivering our first child! His only request was that I promise I would come back,” she said, laughing. “He told me to take all the time I needed after my baby was born. I returned to work in six weeks, forever grateful for the job and the time off, which was far more than I would have been able to take at the law firm.” After many years as law clerk for Judge Murphy, the position of Clerk of Court became available in the district. The Clerk of Court is the chief administrator for the entire district court with responsibility for everything that supports the court, including financial operations, case administration, personnel management, procurement, and jury administration – “it’s the operations side of things,” she explained. In October 2009, the district judges selected Rosenstengel as Clerk of Court. (Interestingly, she was also the first woman to hold that job in the district). Turns out, “I really enjoyed being Clerk of Court. I honestly
26 | Marketplace Magazine | Early Fall Issue 2014 | marketplacemagazineonline.com
hoped I would have that job forever. I had the chance to make a lot of changes on the administrative side, such as improving certain procedures. For example, we completely revamped the way we process prisoner cases in the district. By implementing a number of new procedures, we cleared a backlog of hundreds of cases. After reworking that system, we are now in great shape.” Likely because of the job she did as Clerk, other judges began mentioning the possibility of Rosenstengel becoming the next judge when Judge Murphy announced his retirement in 2012.
The application itself took four weekends to complete. Rosenstengel made a day trip to Springfield with her husband to personally deliver her application to Senator Durbin’s office. Shortly thereafter, she interviewed with a bipartisan committee of six individuals selected by Senator Durbin. Her name was one on the list the committee forwarded to Senator Durbin, and she met with him at his Springfield office on July 3, 2013. Her name then was sent to the White House along with four others. In August, while out of town with her family on vacation, Rosenstengel received an email telling her that she had an interview (Judge Nancy Rosenstengel continued on page 37)

I’ll bring rules from
My House to the State House Keep Your Promises.
Vote to let Governor Quinn & Jay Hoffman’s Income Tax Surcharge Expire as promised in January 2015 to reduce taxes by 67 percent. I won’t let them make it permanent.
Give Back.
Repeal Jay Hoffman’s 4.6 percent pay raise he voted to give himself in 2014. And I will refuse to accept any pay raise, just as I did as a Belleville Alderwoman.
Pay Your Bills on Time.
End Illinois’ Deadbeat State Title by introducing legislation to cut spending by 20% and dedicate those savings to pay down our $130 billion debt to schools and unfunded pensions. And I will decline to participate in the State Pension System as I did as Alderwoman.
Work Hard.
Reduce Illinois’ 7.9 unemployment rate, the second highest in the nation, by reducing payroll taxes for small businesses who hire qualified unemployed workers.
Respect One Another.
I am a mom, a taxpayer and an Alderwoman who will bring the rules of my House to the State House. Jay Hoffman has lost touch with what it takes to run a house. He believes our tax dollars are his personal checkbook. He just voted himself a pay raise, even though families & seniors are doing more with less. I guess the rules don’t apply to Jay. It’s time to change that.

Melinda Hult is
a MOM on a MISSION
p u n a to cle ’ House Illinois
When Melinda Hult was a student at Belleville’s Abraham Lincoln Elementary School, in the late 1960s, she never thought that one day she would be running to represent her hometown in Springfield as a State Representative.
As Hult campaigns she says moms in particular, are very concerned about the direction Illinois is headed.
But that is exactly what Melinda, a Belleville native who was born at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital, is doing. Hult, a Republican, is working to make history to unseat Democrat Jay Hoffman in this November’s election. When asked about why she was running Hult simply said, “I believe that we can do better for our families.” She hopes to reverse the trend in Illinois of taxing its way out of the monumental debt, which was amassed in the last 12 years by the Blagojevich and Quinn administrations. “As a mom, a taxpayer and an alderwoman, I want to make sure the voices of downstate working families are being heard in Springfield,” said Hult, who has been married to her husband Ralph, retired U.S. Air Force Officer, for the past 36 years. Hult and her family moved back to Belleville in1989, after traveling the world with the military. She worked for various branches of the U.S. Armed Forces and NATO, while her husband was on active duty prior to the birth of their daughter. When her daughter was born, Hult dedicated her time to raising her child.
Hult has also pledged to repeal the 4.6 percent pay raise that her opponent voted to give himself in the waning hours of this Spring’s Legislative Session.
“Moms commit their lives raising their children, only to see them move away after college, “I can’t imagine facing the families of our because they do not want to live in Illinois,” district and trying to justify any pay raise Hult said, whose daughter is now 22. for elected officials, given that we have the second highest unemployment rate in the Hult stated that her own daughter is even country.” considering moving out of state because of the limited opportunity in the area for jobs. As a taxpayer, I want my state to be back, paying your bills on time and respecting the #1 place for her and other young people one another. to want to work, live, pray and play. “I am very excited to be a judge right now and for at least 20 years (she is 46),” Rosenstengel said. “I know there will be challenges in the years to come, but I will work hard every day to do my best. There are a lot of changes coming to the district in the next 20 years, and I am excited to be a part of them.” “Sixteen years ago when I walked through the courthouse door to interview with Pat Murphy, I would never have believed I would be taking his place on the bench,” she continued. “He gave me a wonderful opportunity, and I learned so much from him. But as a judge, I will be my own person.” With a very strong family support system, Rosenstengel feels blessed to have been able to balance a career with family. “I couldn’t do it without Jon – he has always supported my career and encouraged me at every step of the way.”

Just as she was on her way home from an out of town trip after the holidays, Rosenstengel received word that she needed to travel to Washington D.C. again for a hearing before the Senate Judiciary Committee. She was lucky to get to Washington with her family on January 8, because the area was hammered with heavy snow and record low temperatures that week. Fortunately, the kids did not miss any school, because all the schools in the area were closed! After the hearing, she received more written questions to answer and submit. Following all this…more waiting… until the final vote in the U.S. Senate on May 8 when she was confirmed 95–0. Her judicial commission was signed by President Obama on May 12, and she was informally but officially sworn in at the federal courthouse before her fellow judges on May 19.

After the White House interview, there were more interviews and more background investigations, this time by the American Bar Association and the FBI. “The FBI was a very thorough investigation. They interviewed my mother, my neighbors, my co-workers, friends, acquaintances, and even my very first employer at an ice cream shop in high school!” After all this, it was very quiet until the nomination by President Barack Obama on November 7.
