Spring Debut! New Owners At Scott’s Promote One-Stop Shopping The new owners of well-known Scott’s Landscaping and Exterior Lighting, Josh Martie and Dan Fieker, want everyone to know that it’s business as usual. But they also want to introduce a few new services that will round out the shopping experience thus creating a one-stop-shop for all exterior needs. “We are just the same, yet different, said Martie with a smile. “You can still count on our same great staff and top-notch customer service, but we have added a few things like fencing which is a natural extension of what we already offer so we are really excited about it.
vacation is becoming even more popular. Of course the economy plays a role in this trend, but Fieker also thinks cable television shows for do-it-yourselfers give people the ideas and motivation to start a project but they know they need help from a professional. “That’s where we step in with professionally designed landscaping including the plants and trees, patios, outdoor fireplaces, water features, sprinkler systems, exterior lighting and now fencing, Fieker said. “We are a one-stop-shop – that’s really our strength and that’s what makes us different from the guy in a truck.
Even though he is a new owner, Martie is quite familiar with the business; in fact, he has practically grown up at Scott’s for the past 12 years. “I got a worker’s permit when I was 15 years old to start working here with Scott – we were neighbors and I watched his kids. When I was old enough, he brought me onboard.
Technology will also improve at Scott’s. With their gorgeous computer image design programs, customers can walk into the consulting room and literally see their own home on a huge monitor with new landscaping around it. “They don’t have to visualize anything – it’s right there and we have the ability to move things around, Martie said.
Working in every aspect of the garden center, Martie began at Scott’s as a landscape laborer and worked his way up establishing core relationships with customers along the way. “I try to visit with our clients at least three times per year: spring, summer and fall, he said. He also obtained an education in horticulture at Southwestern Illinois College.
In the garden center, you will be able to walk over to a computer and seek information regarding any kind of landscaping question. “This should be a great resource for our customers, Fieker said.
Discussing trends in their business, the two co-owners think that more people are staying put in their current homes and rehabbing things they want to change, and the “back-yard
Scott’s is located in Fairview Heights on Old Collinsville Road just minutes from St. Clair Square: 5515 Old Collinsville Road; (618) 632-9338; www.scottsgardencenter.com.

go from drab to fab with a concrete overlay
N
ow you can take your existing plain-Jane concrete from drab to fab without removing the old product. With today’s decorative concrete overlays, it’s easy to give almost any concrete surface both indoors or out, a complete face-lift at a much lower cost than removal and replacement. “We can take an ordinary concrete surface and turn it into a beautiful work of art that will complement the exterior of your home or business without any heavy equipment to damage the surrounding area,” said Keith Griffith, owner of Bricks-n-Stones. “The real challenge is choosing from among the many resurfacing products available and the array of decorative finishes.” Bricks-n-Stones resurfacing works to beautify and restore your existing driveway, sidewalk or patio with an exclusive decorative overlay system. The materials used are extremely durable and resistant to salt, stain, UV and high traffic. In addition, they are easy to clean and virtually maintenance free. “These finishes can be professionally installed to match and enhance the existing landscaping and surroundings,” Griffith said. Time tested and contractor proven, Bricks-n-Stones products have been utilized for over three decades as permanent solutions to industrial, commercial and residential concrete surface defects and deterioration problems. A decorative overlay is literally a thin, permanent layer added to the top of a concrete slab. They can be used on new or existing concrete. When properly installed, a decorative concrete overlay will last a lifetime and never need replacement.
Pool Surrounds Bricks-n-Stones offers specialized treatments for the concrete around pools that includes not only a slip-resistance texture on the overlay itself but it can lower the surface temperature of that particular concrete. Polished Concrete Increasingly popular within commercial and residential facilities is polished concrete: a process that enhances the natural beauty of existing concrete by hardening and polishing the concrete. The benefits of natural concrete are durability and aesthetic value. Polishing results in a smooth, sealed appearance. Polished concrete utilizes low Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) which makes it an environmentally friendly surface. There are no coatings applied such as epoxies, urethanes or waxes. In fact, polished concrete floors are recognized by the United States Green Building Council and LEED certification. Another benefit of polished concrete is lower maintenance cost. In high traffic areas such as garages, schools, hallways and corridors, polished concrete holds up better and lasts longer than traditional floor covering systems. Not only are polished concrete floors easy to clean, requiring only damp mopping, they can resist scuff marks and tire marks. Depending on the traffic, polished concrete needs only to be refinished once every one to five years. In addition, the downtime required for the polishing process is minimal, allowing service or traffic on the surface to begin almost immediately. For more information about decorative concrete overlays or polished concrete, call Bricks-n-Stones at (618) 363-0829; www.creativeconcretepros.com.

Thriving Flooring Business Does Floors
... And A Whole Lot More
G
rowing up in the family flooring business wasn't about starting at the top as Bill Wilson, owner of A&H Floors and veteran of the United States Air Force, knows firsthand. After serving in the Air Force on active duty, he continues to serve our country and community in the Missouri Air National Guard and has achieved the rank of Chief Master Sergeant. His military experience has helped him build a solid business based on small-town values, commitment and service to every customer, a strong work ethic and most importantly, trust. "I discovered that success is not only achieved through hard work but also by ensuring every customer and employee is treated with respect,” he said. With over 20 years of flooring experience with homeowners and contractors, Wilson understands the importance of listening to the needs and dreams of each client. "I really enjoy working one-on-one with the individual homeowner, so I can assist in the early planning and budgeting phases, as well as helping to design that one-of-a-kind flooring project," he said. "In fact, our company mission is to provide the absolute best service on every job to ensure you will be a client for life." The company seeks out customer feedback on every project and implements that feedback into its daily culture and activities. Wilson discovered that customers wanted to see him more involved in their projects; therefore, that's exactly what he does. "People want to invest their money with a company that cares. I am now involved in every project from consulting and measuring to installation and clean up,” he said. “That kind of service makes me different than any other flooring business." In 1999, Wilson made his current location on Lebanon Avenue the new home for A&H Floors. Six additional home improvement retail stores including Wilke Window and Door, are located on site, creating a one-stop-shop for both customers and builders. "In 1999, we were the first tenant in the complex and last year we expanded in order to create a unique experience for our customers, especially for those who might have a hard time visualizing," he said. The well-organized, spacious showroom features 100s of vignettes of available products
including flooring, backsplashes and shower units. The showroom includes a separate area loaded with “blow-out” items perfect for the do-it-yourselfer. Although Wilson prefers the personal touch, he realizes the need to accommodate those who prefer to utilize the internet. Thus, he launched a re-energized and more interactive web site in October, 2012. The AHFloors.com web site enables customers to have access to all the tools they need to conduct their own research, visit photo galleries, and receive free design advice and so much more. They can schedule an appointment or chat online when they are ready to finalize their decision and move forward with their dream project. In addition to the web site, A&H has a strong Facebook presence, offering helpful hints and tips as well as fun facts and information. (Facebook.com/ahfloors). Prices at A&H Floors are "straight forward and include everything it takes to successfully complete the job right the first time with no hidden charges or gimmicks," he said. The flooring company sells, installs and services the following flooring products: • Ceramic, Porcelain, Glass and Metal Tiles • Hardwood Floors • Laminate Floors • Specialty Floors • Natural Stone Tiles • Commercial Sheet Goods, Rubber Flooring, and Rubber/Vinyl Accessories • Flooring Accessories • Carpet and Pad • Vinyl Floors • Luxury Vinyl Tiles A&H Floors carries a large selection of top-quality brands such as Armstrong, Bruce, Mohawk, Dal-Tile, American Olean, Shaw, Pergo, Florida Tile, BR-111, Mullican, Bucks County, and many more. Please visit both www.ahfloors.com and www. facebook.com/ahfloors. The showroom is located at 3512-B Lebanon Avenue, (618) 632-4590.

DEMYSTIFYING DEREGULATION
Solving The Mystery Of Energy Costs To Save Money
S
imply put, energy deregulation is about giving the consumer and business owner a choice and ultimately saving money on power consumption. The easiest example of deregulation and regulation is on the actual power bill. Take a look at 1. the delivery charge and 2. the supply charge. Delivery is regulated because the cost of replacing the actual infrastructure such as poles, lines, etc. at this point in time would be astronomical. However, that is not the case with supply. Supply of the commodity can come from any energy company registered in the state as an REP (registered electric supplier). Energy deregulation brings competition into the market which generally drives prices down. This can bring a significant amount of savings for the consumer but literally save thousands of dollars for business owners. “Since most suppliers pick up the fee it doesn’t cost anything to save money,” said Mike Grimes, president of Commercial Energy Consultants. “For example, I worked with a bar owner who was already in arrears with the incumbent utility. She was facing summer pricing (20% higher) and was about to close the bar. Solution: deregulate. The owner picked up a fixed price 30% lower than the incumbent utilities and was able to keep the bar open.”
Are you well versed in matters of energy deregulation? Be careful, some suppliers take advantage of the uninformed or the chosen company might not be financially stable.” “I recommend using a consultant such as Commercial Energy Consultants (CEC) that has been working with energy deregulation for the last five years. We have 150 million kilowatts under contract and over 500 client relationships,” he continued. “Use a consultant because we have the knowledge to garner the lowest bid from all available suppliers. The consultant regularly contacts suppliers, asks for bids on the consumer’s particular residential/commercial need and delivers the lowest bid. This process takes the hassle out of working directly with the supplier.” Recently Grimes met with a busy school administrator who had been given the task to deregulate. She had received a couple solicitations in the mail and talked to one supplier but realized there are more than 20 suppliers approved by her state. “She called my company and hired us to find the supplier. It took about a week and didn’t cost the school a penny. CEC delivered the low bid and saved the school thousands of dollars each month,” he said.
“Customers are free to work directly with a supplier by doing their own research. But the problem here is that there are 40-plus suppliers,” Grimes said. “Are you Illinois Distributing 11:18 PM Page 1 have the time? going to interview them all to5/17/03 find the best supplier? Do you

Get Your HVAC Questions Answered By An Expert By Jim Hale: Owner, Heritage Heating and Cooling
Now’s the chance to have your heating and cooling questions answered by an expert. Email your questions to service@heritage-service.com.
Q. Why is Freon (R22) getting so expensive? - Tom R., O’Fallon A. R22 Freon is scheduled to be phased out of use by 2020 because of the Clean Air Act combined with the Kyoto protocol in 1997: an agreement between nations to limit and control the emission of greenhouse gases. The price of R22 has continued to climb over the last few years and this summer should see another marked jump as the EPA limits the amounts of R22 that can be manufactured. The phasing out of R22 will cost most homeowners and businesses at some point either in repairs or replacement. Most all HVAC equipment manufacturers have switched over to air conditioners and heat pumps that use R410A, and environmentally friendly refrigerant. If homeowners plan for this and make the change before their current equipment fails there are incentives and tax credits to do so. Homeowners with heat pumps will notice that an R410 upgrade is more efficient and operates well at lower outdoor temperatures than R22. Q. I change my filter regularly. Do I really need regular maintenance? - Tammy S., Fairview Heights A. Changing your filter on a regular basis is one of the most important things a
home owner can do. We often refer to a dirty filter as one of the most common killers of a heating and cooling system. You should check your filter every 30 days regardless of what type you use. Regular maintenance is important for more than just cleaning. Some homeowners spray their air conditioners clean on a regular basis and this is not a bad habit. We actually remove the top cover and use a high pressure spray from the inside out, along with a coil cleaner that helps lift imbedded dirt and debris from between coil fins. More importantly, regular maintenance will identify potential problems before they become needed repairs at an inconvenient time. A good HVAC maintenance schedule will check to insure that your system runs at its full efficiency and safety levels and identify problems earlier rather than later.

Classic Shutters
A beautiful interior shutter system out-performs standard
I
n the last 10 years, energy efficient and eco-friendly home products, geared toward simplifying our lives have become more desirable. The window treatment industry has moved forward to meet new goals with more innovations and product improvements than can be mentioned in this article. However, the beautiful and timeless interior shutter system, in all of its different forms, has undergone little transformation and is now enjoying a new relevance in 2010 as a result of our changing needs. “When a simple slatted product is called for, please don’t re-invest in more 1-inch and 2-inch horizontal blinds without considering the beauty, value and efficiencies of a custom shutter system,” said Jennaver Brown, owner of Eye on Design Drapery, Blinds and Shutters, Inc. “In a well-made shutter, homeowners can find a durable, energy-efficient, eco-friendly, and maintenance-free window treatment with privacy and light control features that make them an excellent value.” Homeowners frequently worry that shutters will make their home too dark. “I feel that a shutter designed with the right size vane,
the correct color and the right mounting style can actually add light to a room and increase view through the vanes to a level higher than a standard blind,” she said. Recently, shutters have even become motorized to give the homeowner control of those difficult to reach windows. A good shutter designer must have several styles of shutters available to meet the diverse needs of each homeowner. “At Eye on Design, we offer no less than 10 different shutter systems to our clients to enable us to meet their needs as closely and cost effectively as possible,” Brown said. If you would you like to move toward a “greener” home, choose: • a shutter system manufactured here in the Midwest and reduce the use of fossil fuels related to shipping; • a “Greenguard Certified” system that utilizes paints/finishes that will not release dangerous VOC’s; • a light color with a no-cost divider rail feature to control and bounce light all over your home; • a shutter system fabricated with North American Basswood, a sustainable and renewable resource.

are here to stay! horizontal blinds at the window every time! “With 50% of our energy loss occurring at the windows of our home, it is easy to understand that interior shutters are an investment with a measureable return,” said Brown. A modern, high quality double pane Low-E window offers an R-Value of approx. 3.5 dependent upon the manufacturer. A high quality shutter system such as the “Newstyle” by Hunter Douglas can increase that R-Value by 70% when added to this type of window. Horizontal blinds are generally unable to increase the R-Value of this window type by more than 15%. Shutters are available in wood, vinyl and composites that each offer benefits with regard to color options, framing styles, humidity resistance, price and special features. A well-trained shutter designer can walk you through your options and help you identify the product that works best for your home. For budgeting purposes, consider costs ranging from $25 to $45 per square foot installed for high quality products with great warranties. If designed properly, you should be able to design around your shutters for many years utilizing many color palettes and furniture styles. A well-designed shutter will reduce your energy costs and add to the re-sale value of your home in ways that horizontal blinds cannot.

The
New Face
of Plumbing, Heating and Cooling f you live in the Metro East, you have been introduced to the new face of plumbing, heating and cooling through the 2013 Men of Spengler Calendar.
I
have been behind him, although his bathtub antics caught them and others by surprise. “My buddies were all texting me, ‘What were you thinking?,’” Stirling laughed.
It’s a "Calendar with a Purpose" that features 14 men of Spengler Plumbing, Heating and Cooling. The project, a first-of-its-kind effort for the O’Fallon-based employer, will raise money for local volunteer fire departments, a cause close to their hearts.
Jarod Burdess, of Collinsville also got into the bubble bath act, only for him it was featuring his miniature red Dachshund named S.J., who can be seen with a bubble crown as Mr. July. “Two of my uncles and a nephew are volunteer firefighters, so it meant a lot to be part of this.”
“For over 40 years, Spengler’s service men have often been called 'heroes' for coming to the rescue by repairing water leaks or restoring heat/air conditioning during extreme weather conditions,” said Jason Spengler, president of Spengler.
The calendar was shot by Rebecca Doehring Photography, an O’Fallon based photographer. While none of the men had professionally modeled, they gave a thumbs-up to the project.
“We know, however, that we’re just doing our job to get things back to normal when unexpected problems happen - the real 'heroes' are the dedicated individuals at local fire departments who help safeguard our communities,” he said. The calendar is free and includes coupons that homeowners can use when calling the company. When a customer uses a coupon, the plumbing, heating and cooling company will donate $5 to a local volunteer fire department of the customer’s choice. The company hopes to raise as much as $20,000 for local departments. Getting models on board, Spengler said, wasn’t a challenge at all. "I thought it was going to be a lot harder to find volunteers than it was,” he said. “When we explained the cause, the guys stepped right up. It was just fun and it had a great purpose behind it.” “I definitely didn’t think I’d be in a calendar when I signed up with Spengler,” said Clint Baugh, who has been with the company since 2011 and appears as Mr. May doing laundry. “But it was a fun project.” Ched Stirling, of Troy, didn’t know how what to think when he was first asked to pose taking a bubble bath as Mr. June. “I think I drew the short straw. And up until the moment I had to get in the tub, I didn’t take it seriously,” he said. “Obviously I was nervous about it, but it was all very professional. Swim trunks all the way. It turned out great.” The married father of two said his wife, Heather, and daughters, Chloe, 10, and Sophie, 7,
“They kept the shoot light,” Baugh said. “We were joking around. It’s definitely something we don’t do every day.” And all the guys said that the calendar’s dual purposes of promotion and donation sealed their participation. Scott Summers, from Jerseyville, who was featured taking a shower as Mr. October, said, “It was all in great fun and our clients have been very supportive.” Jason Spengler said that they have committed to donate a minimum of $10,000 to local fire departments this year regardless of coupon redemption, but hopes that with client help, they can reach their goal of $20,000 by December. All the men are being asked to autograph calendars including SJ’s paw-print. “The support from the community has been overwhelming,” said Spengler. “Because of the attention, we have had many requests by other not-for-profit organizations to have the Men of Spengler make appearances at local charitable fundraisers.” They are already booked to sign autographs to raise funds for Junior Service Club of St. Clair County and at the annual Easter Egg Hunt in Troy, Illinois. To receive a free calendar and the opportunity to help a local fire department, contact Spengler at (618) 688-2679 or at www.facebook.com/The-SpenglerCompany.

Safety Is 1 Priority For Outdoor Fun #
S
ince 1991, Dream Play Recreation has offered a colorful myriad of the highest quality playground and recreational equipment on the market. In 2011, Dream Play expanded their offerings by adding Woodplay - “The Original Redwood Playset Company” - Childlife Playsets, Goalrilla basketball goals and Sports Trainers to a line up that already included Goalsetter Basketball Systems and the revolutionary Springfree Trampoline. “Safety is a huge parental concern and the playsets and trampolines we offer are the safest in the country,” said Tim Albers, owner. “Plus, our in-house installers take all the safety parameters into account to ensure a safe play environment once the equipment is installed. Dream Play will make sure the job is done right.” The premium brand of playsets that Dream Play carries is Woodplay because it offers only the best in quality, safety, value and expandability. “Woodplay is constructed of Heart Redwood, which is naturally resistant to insects and decay, making it the best choice for any outdoor playset. All the edges of the wood are routed, rounded, sanded smooth and pre-stained from the factory. In addition, using only true construction size beams, all the major joints are through-bolted, some using triple joint construction, and secured with hot dipped galvanized hardware,” Albers said. “No other playset company makes their products this way. Redwood also takes stain well so it’s not as maintenance intense as other lumber. In addition, we also offer Childlife Playsets, a division of Woodplay. The Childlife lineup has lower price points and is an incredible value that does not compromise safety being constructed of 4”-by-4” and 4”-by-6” beams throughout.”
When it comes to basketball goals, “Goalsetter is the best built goal you can buy. They are 100 percent American made with a lifetime warranty, and adjustable from 6-foot to 10-foot. “We have carried Goalsetter for 18 years and in my opinion they have no equal. We also now carry Goalrilla basketball goals. They have really upped their game in the market with their ‘Clear View’ line-up of goals made to mimic the look of basketball goals you see in college and professional arenas, and also come with a lifetime warranty.” And for fun plus fantastic health benefits, Springfree Trampolines are the safest trampoline in the world. “Springfree is the only trampoline I will carry. Simply put, they have engineered 83 percent of all injuries that occur on trampolines out of the product. There are no springs or metal frame to fall on and you can’t fall out,” he said. Springfree uses flexible glass infused rods for its bounce. The rods lie beneath the jumping surface out of harms way. Traditional trampolines have springs that give it the bounce, and despite safety pads, can still injure. “The health benefits of trampolines have long been known: 10 minutes on a trampoline is equal to 30 minutes of jogging. Astronauts train on trampolines. With Springfree you can have all the benefits without the negatives.” Dream Play Recreation invites all customers to experience their 12,000-squarefoot showroom – one of the largest in the country – filled with 18 playsets, nine basketball goals in a court area, three trampolines and four sorts trainers on display ready for your test play.
Pay To Play: Wednesday, Thursday and Friday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. parents can bring their child in and play their little hearts out. Cost: $6 (credit), $5 (cash). Birthday parties are available in the fall and winter as well. Dream Play Recreation is located at 17373 Edison Avenue in Chesterfield; (636) 530-0055 or (800) 962-0055; DreamPlayRec.com.

Popular Vet Has Been Providing Pet Health Care For Over 40 Years
F
or over 40 years, pet owners throughout the Metro East have turned to Dr. David E. Lashley for his caring and superior animal health care. His long-time clinic, Lashley Animal Hospital, has been an anchor on N. Illinois Street in Swansea for all these years and has been updated throughout that time to exceed today’s state-of-the-art standards. Chances are, if there is or has been a pet in the household during the past four decades, Dr. Lashley has cared for it. And literally, he cares for every pet as if it were his own. “I want your ‘babies’ to go home happy and healthy,” he said. “If you have a problem that hasn’t been solved elsewhere, please bring it to me and let’s get it solved.” Dr. Lashley is one of those special individuals who found their true calling early in life and followed through working at multiple jobs throughout high school, college and veterinary school to pay tuition, room and board. “As a young boy, I really loved a television program called “Noah’s Ark” which was about a veterinarian. I knew in third grade that I wanted to be a vet,” he said. Growing up in a modest, hard-working and loving home in Belleville on N. Seventh Street with his parents and sister, he attended Central Jr. High and Belleville Township High School. “In our neighborhood, everyone presumed I would go to work in one of the many auto shops,” he said. “People would ask ‘why do you want to be a vet?’” “Often my dad and I would hunt to put food on the table,” Dr. Lashley said. “That’s just the way it was. Dad’s rule was you only shoot an animal if you’re going to dress it properly and eat it for sustenance. If not, then you don’t shoot it. He taught us how to handle a gun correctly and how to dress it for the table. I learned a lot about anatomy by doing that with him. But I loved all animals and the older I got the more I had no desire to shoot an animal for any reason.”
Throughout his youth he also had a paper route in Belleville “where I got to know many people around town,” he continued. “So when I opened the animal hospital in 1969, many of those same people came to me with their pets.” The paper route job also provided a foundation for building his own business. “You learn a lot about handling money, the different personalities of your customers and the delicate situation of collections.” For two years, Dr. Lashley attended Belleville Area College (now Southwestern Illinois College) and then entered the University of Illinois, College of Veterinary Medicine where he was one of the first veterinarians in the United States to learn and perform a Femoral Head Ostectomy: a surgical procedure that removes the femoral head and neck from the femur to alleviate hip pain thus saving the lives of many large breed dogs who had heretofore been put to sleep when suffering from hip dysplasia. Graduating from Illinois in 1967, he took his boards at neighboring University of Missouri. Upon graduating, the young Dr. Lashley first worked for an animal clinic on Telegraph Road from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. and then made house calls “all over Cahokia, Dupo, Sauget, Washington Park, Centerville – it was quite an experience – I might be in someone’s home at 3 a.m.! Amazingly, I still see some of those same people here though often it’s the children of those clients,” he said. “In 1969, we opened Lashley Animal Hospital in this location.”
24 | Marketplace Magazine | Early Spring Issue 2013 | marketplacemagazineonline.com
The practice has always focused on preventative, wellness and surgical care for dogs and cats as well as the diagnosis, treatment, and cure of sick animals. “Back in the day, dogs and cats barely made it beyond five or six years old and I just couldn’t handle that as ‘standard procedure.’ Today our pets are living to 15 or 16 years old! That is always the goal.”
“We discovered that so many patients needed boarding and they needed a nice place to take them with good care,” Dr. Lashley said. “Pam has worked so hard and has built a very successful business. Of course all the kids have helped us both all of their lives.” The Lashley “kids” are daughter Brook, and sons Sean and Chris. All three children have careers of their own, though son Chris, who is an attorney, has joined his father in the practice to take care of “all the behind the scenes stuff,” said Dr. Lashley. “It’s great because Chris does all the work and I get to do the fun stuff!”
Though he is way too modest to say so himself, Dr. Lashley is well-loved by many and is frequently nominated as one of the area’s top veterinarians, including repeat nominations as one of the Top Three Veterinarians in the Belleville News Democrat’s Readers Choice Awards.
Actually, Chris takes care of the legal, corporate and financial business as well as providing the best equipment for the animal clinic. Basically, “bringing dad into the 21st century,” Chris laughed. “All of us kids love animals because of our parents – we always had animals in the house. We were even lucky enough to get to raise wildlife like fawns and raccoons through dad's work with Tree House!” The children have also learned from their parents to give back to the community anyway they are able. (continued on Page 32)
Dr. Lashley’s wife of 44 years, Pam Lashley, is likely as well-known as her husband because of her gracious and sweet demeanor at her popular Country Estates Kennel which she opened in 1988 after a rewarding teaching career at Signal Hill School in West Belleville.

March is No Time for Madness: Stress Management in Everyday Life Submitted By Ooh La La Spa, Anti-Aging & Wellness
S
tress is such a dreadful word. And what it does to our body is even more dreadful. Stress is meant to be your body’s protection from an unbalanced situation. In manageable amounts, it actually helps keep you focused. However, when it snowballs out of control your body just can’t keep up and it causes health issues that you may be ignoring. Take a moment to evaluate your response to stress. What does your body communicate to you in the midst of a taxing situation? Do you become irritable and frazzled? Perhaps you overeat, or lose your appetite all together. Other responses may include: tension in neck and shoulders, fatigue, irregular sleep patterns, nail biting or other nervous habits. According to the American Psychological Association, “A full 43 percent of American adults suffer adverse effects from stress. Also, women tend to be more affected by stress versus men.
Now it’s time to put solutions and management techniques into ACTION! Therapeutic options include: Acupuncture: This treatment helps balance and restore your body’s energy, or Chi, while relieving pain, tension, and fatigue. Meditation: The latest version of meditation is the use of Zen Frames. Zen Frames combine light and sound therapy within a narrated meditative session to help with everything from stress management to weight loss and smoking cessation. Exercise and Proper Nutrition: Regular activity and a balanced diet are essential to everyday living and health. We MUST eat a balanced diet while staying active. This doesn’t mean you have to deprive yourself of your favorite foods, but learn healthy ways to incorporate those foods into your daily life and fuel a healthy body. Your exercise plan may include anything from an energetic walk through your neighborhood to jumping on a mini trampoline in your living room. Or challenge yourself to train for a 5K run. Just keep MOVING!! Thirty minutes of exercise and healthy meals will help you become stronger and able to cope with stress. Massage: Make sure Massage is part of your relaxation plan whether it’s biweekly or monthly. Massage gives your body and mind time to unwind, releases tension, and encourages circulation to move toxins out of the body. A 30 or 60-min massage can truly work wonders! For more information on Healthy Living and Relaxation Treatments, or to schedule an appointment, call Ooh La La Spa, Anti-Aging & Wellness at 618.288.9117. Visit us online at OohLaLaWellness.com. Our 12,000 sq. ft. Spa & Wellness clinic is located at 110 Cottonwood Road in Glen Carbon.

The Bright Underachiever:
Is he just not trying hard enough or is something else wrong? According to Dr. Thomas Unger, a developmental optometrist in Troy, “There are over 20 visual skills required for reading and learning besides being able to see the eye chart. Sometimes these vision problems are tough to locate even in a comprehensive vision exam. If your child has any of the above symptoms you want to take your child to a Developmental Optometrist.
B
right children who don’t achieve to potential are an interesting puzzle. Many factors contribute to their difficulties. Research has found that vision problems play a role in academic achievement yet is often inadvertently overlooked. Did you know that an untreated vision problem can mimic ADD/ADHD? LD? and can contribute to behavioral problems? Typically if a child can pass the vision screening, vision is automatically ruled out, because most people think that “20/20 means you have perfect vision. But, did you know that the test that is used in most vision screenings (the Snellen Chart) was designed in the 1800’s? And, only 5% of actual vision problems are caught with that screening? To clarify what “20/20 actually means, the first “20 means you are looking at the eye chart from a distance of 20 feet. The second “20 means you are able to see the size of letter you are supposed to see from 20 feet. That’s all it means! The test doesn’t tell us if the child has all the visual skills required to read (example: following along a line of print easily). Students who are struggling with undiagnosed vision problems will often be very bright yet their intelligence won’t be reflected in their performance on standardized tests. According to Dr. Linda Silverman, an educational psychologist who has worked with gifted children for over 40 years, “A high Verbal IQ combined with a Performance IQ that is 20 points lower should signal the need for an optometric evaluation.
Does your child: • Get frustrated trying to read or do homework? • Have trouble keeping attention on reading? • Take much longer on homework than it should? If you answered yes to any of these questions, a vision problem may be contributing to your child’s difficulties. These are just a few of the more common symptoms. For a more information, call Dr. Unger’s office: at (618) 667-2020 or visit wwwungereyecare.com.

(continued from Page 25) Dr. Lashley has volunteered his time and talents to teach children about domestic animals and wildlife at Belleville-area elementary schools and as the founder of the Veterinary Explorer Post for the Boy Scouts of America. For over 20 years, he served as the sole veterinarian for Treehouse Wildlife Center, a non-profit organization providing community service to people in Southwestern Illinois who encounter injured or orphaned wildlife. He has donated his time, services and supplies, to save the lives of fawns, ducklings, groundhogs, raccoons, and numerous birds of prey including the American Bald Eagle. He also has provided Pro Bono services to the Belleville Area Humane Society for many years and, along with a fellow colleague, donated the center’s first Avid Microchip Scanner to facilitate the return of lost pets to their owners. Throughout his career, Dr Lashley also has served as both the President and Vice President of the Southern Illinois Veterinary Medical Association. Interestingly, Dr. Lashley is regularly sought by the handlers and professional partners of working dogs. He has served as veterinarian for K-9 police units in the cities of Belleville, Cahokia, Caseyville, Sauget and Swansea. He also donated a bulletproof vest to the Village of Sauget for one of the State of Illinois’ top performing K-9 officers and provided complimentary care to a local search-and-rescue dog who gave his life to the rescue and recovery acts following the September 11, 2001 attacks at the World Trade Center in New York City.
