Enhance

Your Property With A Professional Landscape Design, Installation and Maintenance Company

S

cott Hesse and his professional staff at Scott’s Landscaping and Exterior Lighting have been enhancing properties in the Metro East since 1990, transforming impressive designs to stunning landscapes. They are also a provider of quality plant materials including annuals, perennials, shrubs, trees and more. Whether a client needs a master plan to guide the development of an entire property or simply a professional start to a specific area, Scott’s goal is to give a vibrant, refreshing new look and feel to the home. Hesse has been working hard this spring to design a literal botanical garden on his fouracre property with many different displays and examples of their work for clients to visit, sit and think about what they could with their own property. “We want people to come and stay for awhile,” he said. Offering all manner of landscape services like brick patios and walks, any size water feature, landscape lighting and more, Scott’s is the only garden center that can design, install and maintain the landscape after the sale. Hesse was a math teacher for five years before finding a passion for landscape design. In fact, it was a basketball coach at his first job in Effingham who offered him a chance for some extra work at his business – Maxedon Landscape Co.

“When I left Effingham, the coach made me promise I’d get into the business myself because he thought I had a talent for it,” Hesse said. “I miss the interaction of teaching, but I feel like I’m doing that with my staff and clients as a business owner.” When a customer chooses to work with Scott’s, they get the convenience of working with one company throughout the design/build process, eliminating delays between stages of the project. Design and construction teams work together to keep the project running smoothly. Hesse will visit the homeowner and ask many questions like what will the space be used for; what are the homeowners likes and dislikes regarding plant and building materials, and then they discuss what plant is best suited for particular areas. “All of the plants we offer are ‘zoned’ for our area, but there are some folks who want a colorful tropical or banana plant,” he said. “In that case, you can try to bring them inside in the winter, but they’ll likely need to be replaced the following spring.” Regarding maintenance, he said they provide something as simple as cleanup a couple times per year or a weekly program for a family that is just too busy to keep up with it or an elderly couple that needs a hand.

Scott’s Services Include: • Professional Landscape Design and Installation • Brick Patios and Walks • Specialty Gardens • Computer Image Design • Landscape Lighting • Holiday Decorating and Lighting Scott's is located in Fairview Heights, Illinois on Old Collinsville Road just minutes from St. Clair Square: 5515 Old Collinsville Road; 618-632-9338; www.scottsgardencenter.com.

Safety Is 1 Priority For Outdoor Fun #

Since 1991, Dream Play Recreation has offered a colorful myriad of the highest quality playground and recreational equipment on the market. In 2011, Dream Play expanded their offerings by adding Woodplay - “The Original Redwood Playset Company” - Childlife Playsets, Goalrilla basketball goals and Sports Trainers to a line up that already included Goalsetter Basketball Systems and the revolutionary Springfree Trampoline. “Safety is a huge parental concern and the playsets and trampolines we offer are the safest in the country,” said Tim Albers, owner. “Plus, our in-house installers take all the safety parameters into account to ensure a safe play environment once the equipment is installed. Dream Play will make sure the job is done right.” The premium brand of playsets that Dream Play carries is Woodplay because it offers only the best in quality, safety, value and expandability. “Woodplay is constructed of Heart Redwood, which is naturally resistant to insects and decay, making it the best choice for any outdoor playset. All the edges of the wood are routed, rounded, sanded smooth and pre-stained from the factory. In addition, using only true construction size beams, all the major joints are through-bolted, some using triple joint construction, and secured with hot dipped galvanized hardware,” Albers said. “No other playset company makes their products this way. Redwood also takes stain well so it’s not as maintenance intense as other lumber. In addition, we also offer Childlife Playsets, a division of Woodplay. The Childlife lineup has lower price points and is an incredible value that does not compromise safety being constructed of 4”-by-4” and 4”-by-6” beams throughout.”

When it comes to basketball goals, “Goalsetter is the best built goal you can buy. They are 100 percent American made with a lifetime warranty, and adjustable from 6-foot to 10-foot. “We have carried Goalsetter for 18 years and in my opinion they have no equal. We also now carry Goalrilla basketball goals. They have really upped their game in the market with their ‘Clear View’ line-up of goals made to mimic the look of basketball goals you see in college and professional arenas, and also come with a lifetime warranty.” And for fun plus fantastic health benefits, Springfree Trampolines are the safest trampoline in the world. “Springfree is the only trampoline I will carry. Simply put, they have engineered 83 percent of all injuries that occur on trampolines out of the product. There are no springs or metal frame to fall on and you can’t fall out,” he said. Springfree uses flexible glass infused rods for its bounce. The rods lie beneath the jumping surface out of harms way. Traditional trampolines have springs that give it the bounce, and despite safety pads, can still injure. “The health benefits of trampolines have long been known: 10 minutes on a trampoline is equal to 30 minutes of jogging. Astronauts train on trampolines. With Springfree you can have all the benefits without the negatives.” Dream Play Recreation invites all customers to experience their 12,000-squarefoot showroom – one of the largest in the country – filled with 18 playsets, nine basketball goals in a court area, three trampolines and four sport trainers on display ready for your test play.

Pay To Play: Wednesday, Thursday and Friday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. parents can bring their child in and play their little hearts out. Cost: $6 (credit), $5 (cash). Birthday parties are also available. Dream Play Recreation is located at 17373 Edison Avenue in Chesterfield, MO; (636) 530-0055 or (800) 962-0055; DreamPlayRec.com.

CHANGE THE LOOK OF EXISTING CONCRETE

E

d Roman, owner of Empire Resurfacing, considers himself a “concrete cosmetologist” who can transform plain or cracked concrete to a beautiful, durable surface. As a perfectionist himself, he has been resurfacing pool decks and plain concrete floors with meticulous precision for nine years. With today’s decorative overlays, acid stains and polished concrete techniques, it’s easy to give almost any concrete surface, indoors or out, a complete face-lift and at a much lower cost than removal and replacement. A concrete overlay is an acrylic cement coating designed to go right over, or cover, new or existing concrete.

not only has the appearance, but texture and dimension of these materials. All of the photos you see on these pages are Empire Resurfacing products, though you could swear that you are looking at bricks in some of them. Concrete overlays are also slip-resistant and cooler to walk on than regular concrete, which makes it perfect for pool decks. It is a non-porous product that not only seals and protects the existing concrete, but is also resistant to staining.

“Once we put down a concrete overlay, it is considered a permanent surface that requires very little maintenance; resealing is recommended only about five to eight years,” Roman said.“The real challenge is choosing from among the many decorative finishes and designs that are available.”

“Generally when homeowners call us they have a concrete surface in very visible areas – patios, pool decks, walkways, driveways – that is crumbling, dirt stained or just plain ugly gray concrete,” Roman said. “What they want and what they get is something much more attractive and easier to maintain. Sometimes they call us when they have had a different concrete coating that has not proved durable. In most cases, we can help you repair and/or reseal our competitors’ surfaces.”

It can be designed to look like many different quality masonry surfaces, including flagstone, brick, granite or tile. The product

Fully insured and bonded, and now in business for nine years, Roman guarantees the bonding strength of their products.

And when he arrives to give a free estimate, he will show the client many photos of previous jobs in their immediate area to help give the client an idea of what can be done. “We have done over 400 jobs right here in Madison and St. Clair counties,” he said. “I encourage my new customers to contact the many references we can provide.” Based in Brighton, Empire Resurfacing offers highperformance flooring and overlays for interior and exterior residential, commercial and governmental projects. Update Your Home’s Exterior With Low Maintenance Vinyl Or Aluminum

F

or the past 20 years, the metropolitan area has seen a steady increase in the low maintenance materials for your home and yard. Before then, there was little choice but wood for fencing, decking and railings, and homeowners found themselves repairing, re-staining, repainting, and eventually replacing their wood materials. Designed to last a lifetime rather than a season, vinyl and aluminum products are made to enhance the home's curb appeal while providing a practical choice for safety, privacy and practicality. Wood is beautiful for sure, but as soon as it’s installed it begins to deteriorate – that’s an inevitable fact. And today, with most old-growth lumber long since cut down, the life span of wood isn’t even as good as it used to be. The benefits of vinyl are numerous starting with superior construction material. At Westech, an American company (Indiana), the company believes that you only get what you put in. That is why they start by demanding only the highest quality vinyl resin. Then they add the titanium dioxide (prevents yellowing and cracking) and impact resisters (helps to prevent breakage) and other high quality ingredients for “weatherability.” Vinyl is available in several colors other than white, such as almond and clay. Aluminum railing and fencing are also low maintenance materials. Radiance aluminum fence is an American made product that is produced in Michigan. It carries

a lifetime warranty, just like the vinyl and is composed of a .090 sculpted horizontal rail that prevents the rails from sagging over time. This rail is twice the thickness of the average rail which translates into twice the strength. Radiance aluminum fence is available in black, bronze and white. Aluminum porch and deck railing is becoming more popular for people who are looking for the darker colors and a product that is not as massive as vinyl. The Westbury aluminum railing is also made in Indiana and is one of the highest quality rails on the market. This rail can be mounted to concrete, attached to a deck, installed into the ground, or core drilled into concrete. It comes in 11 different colors, and has a lifetime warranty. Perhaps the best feature of all these products is that they are virtually maintenance free. There’s no need to scrape, paint or stain a vinyl or aluminum fence or rail. As with most exterior products, they will become dirty when exposed to the elements. Pressure washing with a mild detergent and water should keep the products looking new. For stubborn stains, use a non-abrasive cleanser and a soft-bristled brush. For more information on these products, you may visit the extensive showroom at Trost Plastics just off Route 3 at 8610 Hanover Industrial Drive, Columbia; or call (800) 355 4060. You can also check them out at www.trostplastics.com.

ENRICHING THE SOIL NATURALLY SINCE 1992

St. Louis Composting Celebrates International Compost Awareness Week and the CCUP Launch

By Ashley Bement, St. Louis Composting

St. Louis Composting invites you to join in celebrating International Compost Awareness Week (ICAW), May 6 through 12, 2012. This year’s theme is “Compost!...Replenish the Earth for Generations,” and planned activities span the globe with celebrations scheduled across the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Europe, Australia and Ireland. Composting advocates will encourage everyone, everywhere to compost. It’s a “growing” event you won’t want to miss! ICAW focuses on building awareness of composting and its environmental benefits. Year after year, innovative programs improve community sustainability and promote the use of renewable resources in landscaping, horticulture and agriculture. Together, the U.S. Composting Council and trendy gardeners worldwide have put a face on composting. ICAW is a week packed with fun and educational events that offer an opportunity to learn more about the many benefits of composting through enjoyable and engaging activities. To celebrate, St. Louis Composting will host events at three of our composting facilities on May 8, 10 and 12. Enjoy barbecue, snacks and veggies that grow GREAT in St. Louis Composting’s signature compost and soil blends all three days: • May 8: Fort Bellefontaine facility in Florissant, Mo. (13060 County Park Road), 11 a.m. • May 10: Belleville, Ill. facility (3521 Centreville Ave.) – 11 a.m. • May 12: Valley Park, Mo. facility (39 Old Elam Ave.) – Noon We also will host a “Give Compost a GROW at Home” workshop to educate customers about compost, its benefits and how to begin backyard composting. The workshop begins at noon on Saturday, May 12 at the Valley Park facility.

“Give Compost a GROW at Home” demonstrates how to start your own compost pile, the benefits of using compost in your garden and lawn, and much more. Another demonstration will teach how to build your own compost bin. St. Louis Composting will also have a representative on hand to discuss alternative composting methods and options. No registration is required; just show up ready to COMPOST. The Earth Machine home composters will be on sale at the event. All attendees who complete the composting workshop will receive one free cubic yard of compost to take home (offer good for day of workshop only). In addition to ICAW, St. Louis Composting will educate consumers on the newly-launched Consumer Compost Use Program (CCUP), which easily shares with consumers the optimal use of each compost blend according to the U.S. Composting Council’s Seal of Testing Assurance (STA) Program. St. Louis Composting and other compost producers using CCUP will now clearly identify – with easy-to-understand icons – for which of three use categories a blend is best suited. They are: Lawns; Trees and Shrubs; and Flower and Vegetable Gardens. Homeowners are now assured they are selecting the best compost product for their specific gardening need. If you cannot make it to any of St. Louis Composting’s exciting ICAW events, be sure to celebrate ICAW at home. Start your own compost pile or incorporate our Black Gold Compost into your lawn, landscaping and gardens, and see its benefits for yourself. For more information about the benefits of compost, composting at home and the CCUP, please visit our web site at www. stlcompost.com.

Classic Shutters arehere to stay! A beautiful interior shutter system out-performs standard horizontal blinds at the window every time!

I

n the last 10 years, energy efficient and eco-friendly home products, geared toward simplifying our lives have become more desirable. The window treatment industry has moved forward to meet new goals with more innovations and product improvements than can be mentioned in this article. However, the beautiful and timeless interior shutter system, in all of its different forms, has undergone little transformation and is now enjoying a new relevance in 2012 as a result of our changing needs. “When a simple slatted product is called for, please don’t re-invest in more 1-inch and 2-inch horizontal blinds without considering the beauty, value and efficiencies of a custom shutter system,” said Jennaver Brown, owner of Eye on Design Drapery,Blinds and Shutters,Inc.“In a well-made shutter, homeowners can find a durable, energyefficient, eco-friendly, and maintenance-free window treatment with privacy and light control features that make them an excellent value.” Homeowners frequently worry that shutters will make their home too dark. “I feel that a shutter designed with the right size vane, the correct color and the right mounting style can actually add light to a room and increase view through the vanes to a level higher than a standard blind,” she said.

Recently, shutters have even become motorized to give the homeowner control of those difficult to reach windows. A good shutter designer must have several styles of shutters available to meet the diverse needs of each homeowner.“At Eye on Design, we offer no less than 10 different shutter systems to our clients to enable us to meet their needs as closely and cost effectively as possible,” Brown said. If you would you like to move toward a “greener” home, choose: • a shutter system manufactured here in the Midwest and reduce the use of fossil fuels related to shipping; • a “Greenguard Certified” system that utilizes paints/finishes that will not release dangerous VOC’s; • a light color with a no-cost divider rail feature to control and bounce light all over your home; • a shutter system fabricated with North American Basswood, a sustainable and renewable resource. “With 50% of our energy loss occurring at the windows of our home, it is easy to understand that interior shutters are an investment with a measureable return,” said Brown. A modern, high quality double pane Low-E window offers an R-Value of approx. 3.5 dependent upon the

manufacturer. A high quality shutter system such as the “Newstyle” by Hunter Douglas can increase that R-Value by 70% when added to this type of window. Horizontal blinds are generally unable to increase the R-Value of this window type by more than 15%. Shutters are available in wood, vinyl and composites that each offer benefits with regard to color options, framing styles, humidity resistance, price and special features. A well-trained shutter designer can walk you through your options and help you identify the product that works best for your home. For budgeting purposes, consider costs ranging from $25 to $45 per square foot installed for high quality products with great warranties. If designed properly, you should be able to design around your shutters for many years utilizing many color palettes and furniture styles. A well-designed shutter will reduce your energy costs and add to the re-sale value of your home in ways that horizontal blinds cannot. Take advantage of our annual Spring Shutter Sale today and see for yourself!

Bringing Home The Gold! The 2012 Kitchen of the Year Designed To Mimic Cooking Shows

O

nce again, the designers at Herzog Kitchen and Bath have brought home the gold for the 2012 St. Louis Homes and Lifestyles Kitchen of the Year (400 square feet and larger). The honor was awarded to them recently for their contemporary kitchen designed to look and operate like the kitchens you see on the cooking television shows. “Having the opportunity to design an ultra contemporary kitchen like this is not too common in the Midwest,” said Designer Elizabeth Kavlock. “So we get very excited when we get a customer who wants something this unique.” The inspiration for this sleek kitchen really did come from the designs on the cooking shows because the homeowner “cooks a ton and does lots of entertaining. His guests love to watch him so he thought it would be fun to set it up just for that purpose,” Kavlock said. There is available seating for 30 in this 1,500-square-foot space! In fact, the homeowner has taken his passion and actually started a catering company. “It’s been life changing for him,” she said. All of the appliances and features are commercial grade including Wolf and Sub-Zero products: two warming drawers, three built-in ovens, a grill, a griddle, a fryer and steamer, a wok and more. “He can literally prepare a seven-course meal at once and much faster than in a standard kitchen,” Kavlock said. “But even though he wanted this functionality, he wanted beauty as well.” The kitchen is located in the center of the home “where all attention turns to it,” she said. “People can be in the living room or the foyer and still see what’s going on in the kitchen.” To create this ultra sleek style, Kavlock used the exotic wood sapele, and put a high gloss over it. “The ultra shine with subtle patterns gives it a more contemporary look” which was repeated on the front of the refrigerator/freezer and cabinets. Then, she incorporated

stainless ovens, custom hoods and accents. “We engraved the homeowner’s initials on the hood to make it even more personal.” Kavlock said, “The center island is my favorite part. The white Corian on the countertop goes down each side, which is nice because the white really freshens the room up. Complementing that is the white backsplash. And there’s a big chef faucet on the island giving it that chef’s kitchen look.” Much attention is paid to the lighting as well with under cabinet lighting for night tasks and upper cabinet lighting for a soft glow. “We put a large, dramatic light over the booth area” to highlight that special part of the kitchen. Kavlock has been designing for Herzog six years now. “We do so many cool things. Of course we have our fair share of traditional clients which is just as amazing and fun, but when people come to us for the innovative and funky we get really excited,” she said. “I try to use at least one unique feature or piece in each project never doing the same kitchen twice – I call that the WOW! factor.” Kavlock and the team at Herzog have also won “Bathroom of the Year” from St. Louis Homes and Lifestyles for the past two years. Truthfully, “bathrooms are my personal favorite though I hate admitting that – it’s like saying you have a favorite child,” she laughed. “But the bathroom is all about the client – they’re not worried about what others think of it like in the kitchen. They can shut the door to the bathroom and no one else sees it – very personal.” Please visit the elegant showroom at Herzog Kitchen and Bath, 23-B Kettle River Drive in Glen Carbon south of Goshen Road; (618) 692-0037; www.herzogkitchenandbath.com. Hours are Monday through Friday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Monday and Wednesday evenings by appointment.

The Bright Underachiever: Is she just not trying hard enough or is something else wrong? According to Dr. Thomas Unger, a developmental optometrist in Troy, “There are over 20 visual skills required for reading and learning besides being able to see the eye chart. Sometimes these vision problems are tough to locate even in a comprehensive vision exam. If your child has any of the above symptoms you want to take your child to a Developmental Optometrist.

Does your child: Get frustrated trying to read or do homework? Have trouble keeping attention on reading? Take much longer on homework than it should? If you answered yes to any of these questions, a vision problem may be contributing to your child’s difficulties. These are just a few of the more common symptoms. For a more complete list call Dr. Unger’s office. Bright children who don’t achieve to potential are an interesting puzzle. Many factors contribute to their difficulties. Research has found that vision problems play a role in academic achievement yet are often inadvertently overlooked. Did you know that an untreated vision problem can mimic ADD/ ADHD? LD? and can contribute to behavioral problems? Typically if a child can pass the vision screening, vision is automatically ruled out, because most people think that “20/20 means you have perfect vision. But, did you know that the test that is used in most vision screenings (the Snellen Chart) was designed in the 1800’s? And, only 5% of actual vision problems are caught with that screening? To clarify what “20/20 actually means, the first “20 means you are looking at the eye chart from a distance of 20 feet. The second “20 means you are able to see the size of letter you are supposed to see from 20 feet. That’s all it means! The test doesn’t tell us if the child has all the visual skills required to read (example: following along a line of print easily). Students who are struggling with undiagnosed vision problems will often be very bright yet their intelligence won’t be reflected in their performance on standardized tests. According to Dr. Linda Silverman, an educational psychologist who has worked with gifted children for over 40 years, “A high Verbal IQ combined with a Performance IQ that is 20 points lower should signal the need for an optometric evaluation.

The good news is that if a vision problem is at the root of your bright child’s struggles, help is just a phone call away. Dr. Unger can be reached at (618) 667-2020; wwwungereyecare.com.

Cleansing Is Critical To Your Health and Weight Loss!

T

here is no question that our environment and food supply is bombarded with toxic compounds, and America's health crisis is a reflection of how our bodies are affected: 44 million people suffer from arthritis, 18 million have diabetes, 17 million struggle with asthma, 1 in 8 women develop breast cancer and over 18 million children are obese. The fact is, the impurities in our food, water and air supply build up in our bodies leading to preventable disease and excessive weight gain. The solution is simple: cleanse your body regularly to help it flush impurities from your system (along with those extra fat pounds) and revitalize your cells by flooding them with high-grade nutrition.

Here are the top 10 reasons you should cleanse your body: Lose Weight: We all love this one. Your body protects itself from ingested toxins by producing extra fat cells. These fat cells encapsulate the impurities and keep them from depositing into and harming your vital organs. Cleansing leeches chemicals from fat cells and helps your liver and kidneys flush them from your system. When the toxins are gone, the fat naturally, and quickly, melts away. Reduce Unhealthy Cravings: This will help you drop the pounds too. When your cells are healthy, they crave nutritious foods - it is that simple. Balance Blood Sugar Levels: When blood sugar levels are out of control, serious health challenges are soon to follow - not to mention inevitable weight gain. Healthy weight loss through cleansing restores balance to your blood-sugar levels. Renew Your Desire to Exercise: After a cleanse, you will definitely feel more inclined to exercise. Your cells are "de-junked" and full of super nutrition - the effect is more energy and more motivation to move your body.

Increase Absorption of Vital Nutrients: When your cells are clean, they can more easily absorb nutrients in your food. Every body system will benefit from this. Give Your Immune System a Boost: The cleaner your cells are the more able they are to fight disease. In conjunction with cleansing - when you fill your body with high-grade proteins, you can expect to strengthen your immune system up to 500%. Enhance Healthy Brain Chemistry: Cleansing helps your body absorb fats and proteins more effectively. The better your body does this, the more healthy brain chemicals it produces. Healthy brain chemistry is key to making wise food choices - not to mention how much more relaxed you will feel. Balance Your Hormones: Cleansing and super nutrition help your body balance its hormone levels. This leads to increased stamina, better sleep, increased sexual desire and a feeling of well-being. Support Your Liver: The liver is your body's primary elimination organ. When it gets overwhelmed with toxins and poor nutrition, poor thyroid function and low energy are the results. Cleansing supports the liver and leads to better thyroid function. Improve Your Quality of Life: This is the ultimate reason to cleanse and replenish your body. When you are clean, you feel happier, sleep better, exercise more, make better food choices and lose excess weight.

1968 Masters Champion Bob Goalby

S

peaking from his sunny winter home in Palm Springs, California, 1968 Masters Champion Bob Goalby reminisced about his charmed life and career - "I have a wonderful life - nobody enjoys it more than me," he said.

Born Robert George "Bob" Goalby in 1929, he is a native of the West End of Belleville and still spends much of the year right here not a few miles from where he grew up "about 60 yards from (St. Clair) Country Club. Of course we didn't belong to the club but I caddied there from 8 years old through high school and college. "Golf was an expensive sport and we didn't have much money so I learned to play on my own with all the other caddies,” he said. “Back then there were no junior programs and really not many golf courses around. We had Westhaven (South Belleville) and Grand Marais in East St. Louis. But if your family had a car and dad took it to work everyday - you couldn’t get there." Interestingly, golf wasn’t even a priority through high school. In fact, Goalby was a stand out quarterback and baseball player at Belleville Township High School earning the honor of All-State Quarterback and winning the state high school baseball championship in 1947. He also made time to be the captain of the basketball team!

“But I never had to go to Korea because I was the quarterback on the 4th Division football team so I got to stay with the team,” he said with a note of appreciation. “I have been lucky like that all my life – good things always turned out for me.” Honestly though, Goalby acknowledged that he always liked golf better and after his stint in the Army he went back to the University of Illinois, played golf and began winning many tournaments around the Midwest. “Once I decided to go pro, I made the cut in a couple of tournaments plus a couple of nickels and then won the Greensboro Open my first year…so I stayed on the tour until I couldn’t play any more when I turned 50.” While on the PGA Tour, Goalby won 11 championships including the Masters Tournament in 1968. He also had the opportunity to represent the U.S. at the Ryder Cup in 1963. But winning the Masters is clearly the highlight of his PGA career. “Anytime you win a major especially the Masters, it really changes your stature in the game. Everyone thinks you’re a better player, but really you’re just the same as you have always been!” he laughed.

“Our pitcher was Lee Wolters who pitched a no-hit game in the state finals – we won 1 to 0!” he recalled. “I think seven of the nine guys went on to play professional baseball after graduating.”

“But really, things were great for me. I lived like a millionaire: ate great food, had the sun on my hair and the green grass at my feet. And most of my good friends are from the PGA – we did everything together. Sometimes we had more fun in practice rounds than a tournament. Of course we did a little gambling on the side,” he said boyishly.

After starting at the University of Illinois on a football scholarship in 1948, he worked at a few jobs and then found himself drafted into the Army during the Korean War.

Some of his good friends include Arnold Palmer, Gary Player, Art Wall, Doug Ford, Billy Casper – “all those guys. When you spend that much time with the same people, you

It’s A Wonderful Life become pretty close,” he said. “I knew Nicklaus of course but not very many got close to him. There’s nothing wrong with him, he just had a different life – he was doing commercials and had a big family.” The ripe “old” age of 50 spelled the end of a PGA career and Goalby hit the landmark in 1979. “Here you play golf all your life and all of a sudden you can’t beat the young guys any more – now what?” he said. “And we had all these big names like Arnold Palmer – we needed a place to show him off because the fans really wanted to see him. “So we started the Seniors Tour which I was chairman of for the first four years and on the board for another 16,” he said. “Then when Arnie joined us we really grew because of the exposure he gave us. “Of all the things I’ve done, I have felt the best about starting the Seniors Tour. I am really proud of what we did,” Goalby said. “It is really a great thing for a lot of players and the fans seem to really enjoy it as well. Many mid-level players on the PGA Tour come to the Seniors Tour (now the Champions Tour) and do even better. They’re making more money now than they ever did on the PGA.” He is also very proud of his nephews, Belleville natives Jay and Jerry Haas, who are fantastic golfers in their own right. Jay Haas of course played on the PGA winning nine championships until his 50th birthday and now he’s on the Champions Tour where he’s won 15 tournaments. “Jay has been a great player all his life. He was like my son while growing up in the 50s – he would practice with me – always a very good player and a really good kid,” Goalby said. Jerry Haas, born 10 years after Jay, played on the tour for a few years and is now the golf coach at Wake Forest University where both he and Jay Haas attended. “Jerry’s a fantastic coach – all the kids love him.”

By Lisa R. Adams

And now there’s Jay’s son, Bill Haas,“who is better than all of us,”said Goalby.“He has the most potential but a little bit of a temper which can really hurt your golf game. It’s better to stay on an even keel. The best players are the one’s who you can’t tell if they just made a bogey or a birdie. On the other hand, I like to see that fire in Bill – that’s what works for him.” Goalby’s son Kye Goalby – a good golfer too – has been designing golf courses all over the world for 25 years now. Locally, he has blueprinted The Orchards and Far Oaks with his father. Currently he is in Japan and has built courses in Scotland, Ireland, Mexico and other exotic places. Bob Goalby has two other sons, Kevin in St. Louis, and Kel in Chicago. “And my beautiful wife is Arlene,” he said. Traveling to the Masters for “my 54th straight trip” is much anticipated every year, Goalby said. “Once you win the Masters you get all the special treatment! The green jacket is waiting in the winner’s locker room; we have an exclusive dinner for the winners in the Masters Club and it’s just great to be there to see all your friends. Everyone who has anything to do with golf will be there – former winners, current players, golf pros, equipment salespeople – everyone congregates by the big oak tree near the clubhouse. Sometime during the week, you will see everyone there – it’s the place to be Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday.” This year’s tournament is April 2 through 8. Still playing golf four to five times a week, Goalby is a member of the Illinois and St. Louis Sports Hall of Fame organizations and has won numerous prestigious awards on and off the tours he has played on. “Golf has been a great way of life for me,” he said. “And how many sports can you play at the age of 83!”

Historic Landmark Lights Up Main Street Once Again The Wildey Theatre Is Set To Celebrate 1-Year Anniversary By Lisa R. Adams

For 103 years, the sparkling lights of Wildey Theatre have lit up the north end of Main Street in downtown Edwardsville. Opening at first as an opera house with a second floor meeting hall for the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, the Wildey evolved into a full-time movie theatre. Sadly, the theater reached a point of decline and had to bring down the curtain on March 8, 1984 after more than 400 people attended the movie “The Big Chill.” Just two years later though, The Edwardsville Historic Preservation Commission designated the Wildey Theatre as a “Local Landmark.” The City, along with concerned citizens including the current Theatre Manager Craig Leitner and Rich Walker at SIUE, recognized the importance of the Wildey Theatre to the overall downtown development effort and sought to acquire the property using a state grant which the City was successful in doing. The renovated Wildey Theatre opened to rave reviews one year ago on April 14, 2011 and has been dazzling audiences ever since with live theatre, concerts featuring all kinds of music, dance performances, lectures, and of course, classic films. “The variety we can offer is why we love the Wildey so much,” Leitner said. “We have an open mind to anything – you can even rent the theatre for your birthday and show a movie! We’ve also had five weddings and other special occasions in the completely renovated Marquee room on the second floor. We even had the World Series here on the big screen!” Growing up in Edwardsville and attending SIUE, Leitner said the Wildey holds a special place in his heart which is why he was so involved in bringing it back to its glory days and if his resume is any indication, the Wildey is lucky to have him as well.

After graduating from college he lived and worked in California and New York where he did such glamorous things as plan a Grammy party at Staples Center, and served as creative director and vice president at such prestigious agencies as Busch Creative Services. He was also the event manager for the Papal Event right here in St. Louis. After all that though, “It’s great to come back to Edwardsville and be close to family and friends.” The renovated Wildey has certainly hastened the renaissance of downtown Edwardsville which is filling up with hip restaurants and bars, unique boutiques and shops, and a general sense of prosperity. Indeed, “we have had 250 events and 22,000 visitors in less than a year at the theatre,” Leitner said. Situated on either side of the outdoor box office a la box offices from “back in the day” are two retail establishments: Lost Arts and Antiques showcasing local art from the immediate area and Encore, a bar owned and managed by Len and Arlene Scaturro, owners of the popular Edwardsville wine shop Crushed Grapes. The Wildey Theatre is located at 252 North Main Street in Edwardsville; (618) 307-2053; www.wildeytheatre.com

“Joy of Easter” Celebrates 24th Year April 4, 5, and 6 at 7:30 p.m.

St. Matthew United Methodist Church,1200 Moreland Drive in Belleville aster is a beautiful time of the year to celebrate new beginnings and reflect on those things that have brought joy to our lives. For the 24th year, St. Matthew United Methodist Church in Belleville will present “The Joy of Easter:” a dramatic interpretation of the Passion Play complete with large choir, orchestra, live animals and full cast.

E

Volunteers are church members but also include children and their families from The St. Matthew Early Learning Center. “Participating is a fantastic experience that is now reaching the second and third generation of some members’ families. It’s also a nice way to get to know people within the church,” he said.

“The ‘Joy of Easter’ reminds us of God’s love and how he sent his son to pay the ultimate price for us,” said Scott Ferguson, casting director for the program and hospitality/guest services director at the church. “We try to include as many volunteers of all ages so there’s a real connection with our audience.”

This year’s performances will be April 4, 5 and 6 at 7:30 p.m. Admission is FREE. “Everyone loves this program so much that some may come back the next night with friends,” he said. Each evening draws at least 1,200 attendees each night and half are usually visitors to the church.

In fact, there are over 350 volunteers who participate in this glorious production including cast, crew and musicians. “It truly does ‘take a village’,” Ferguson said.

“Our music program at St. Matthew has been a large part of our community outreach,” said “Joy of Easter” musical director and director of music ministries at the church Hank Oplinger. “We also invite the public to Keyboard Praise, the Glory of Christmas and our fantastic 2012 Christian concert Series featuring six nationally known artists.”

Jesus will be played by Ted Gajewski and the role of the narrator is by his wife, Anita Gajewski. Drama director is Lindsay Vollmar who is also director of children’s ministries at St. Matthew. Scenes of various Bible stories starting with the birth of Jesus and ending with the crucifixion are depicted with actors in fabulous costumes, live animals and a professionally designed and built set. “You hear about this production your whole life, but it is life changing once you really experience it in person,” Ferguson said. “It’s our favorite time of the year at St. Matthew.”

For more information, call (618) 397-5994. It is recommended to call ahead if you are coming with a group and arriving an hour early is also a good idea. A nursery is provided. Lacrosse Making An Impact On The Young Men Of Southern Illinois What’s up with the boys around town wearing black mid-calf socks, sandals, colorful shorts and T-shirts, and carrying around sticks with mesh heads? Have you seen any of these young guys? Don’t be afraid, they’re just “lax bros!” A “lax bro” is a lacrosse player. The movie “Crooked Arrows,” premiering in April, is all about lacrosse. It’s modeled upon the consistently successful underdog sports movies popularized by “Mighty Ducks,” “Bad News Bears,” “Hoosiers,” and “Bend It Like Beckham.” “Crooked Arrows” is set in the contemporary worlds of Native American reservations, prep schools and lacrosse. So what is lacrosse? Not only is lacrosse the oldest North American sport, it’s the fastest growing sport in America. In fact, national lacrosse participation has grown 10 percent in 2010 according to the annual participation survey conducted by US Lacrosse. The US Lacrosse report found 624,593 players competed on organized teams in 2010, up from the total of 568,021 in 2009. US Lacrosse first tracked overall participation in 2001, when 253,931 people played on organized teams. That’s a whopping 60 percent growth rate in just nine years!

have added a new collegiate player, Zac Bilyeu, as our new Head Coach for the varsity team this season.” GFAF Southern Illinois Lacrosse is proud to be adding boy’s youth lacrosse in addition to their high school programming beginning this spring. Area boy’s who are in the 6th-8th grade can register to play youth lacrosse and 9th-12th grades will play with the GFAF Southern Illinois high school teams. Interested players can attend an informational clinic on April 15 at Vetta Sports in O'Fallon. What’s behind the rise of lacrosse? Lacrosse is tagged the fastest game on two feet and combines many positive qualities of other sports: the running of soccer with faster scoring; the agility and strategy of basketball; the stick skills of hockey; and the toughness of football. While not sanctioned by the Illinois High School Athletic Association (IHSA), lacrosse has gained a strong foothold from among more traditional sports in the St. Louis and Chicago markets. It is slowly moving to Southern Illinois, gaining in popularity with O’Fallon and Belleville leading the way. Not only are lacrosse players great athletes, they are focused and intellectual. The latest numbers for NCAA graduation are at a rate of 88 percent for lacrosse players across the board. Notre Dame's lacrosse program averages a 99 percent graduation rate with its players. These young men are focused on grades and going to college. Indeed, lacrosse is a sport every mother could love! The GFAF Southern Illinois Lacrosse high school program began in 2009 and is still growing. “We turned away players last year for our JV team,” said Conni Tilley, the GFAF team manager. “This year we will be adding a Varsity team, which will open up more spots on the JV team. We are very excited to
