Villa Marie – More Than A Winery

nfolding like a scene out of a romance novel, the Tuscan-inspired Villa Marie Winery and surrounding vineyards are nestled just off Main Street in Maryville.

Founded in 2009 by Maryville native, Judy Drost Wiemann, the winery and vineyard are situated on 60 acres of property that she purchased with the intention of building a home in the community she grew up in and loves so much. Her father, John Drost, local boy and Maryville Mayor from 1953 to 1966, and her mother Mary Grizio Drost for whom the winery is named, were the models for Judy’s commitment to the community. John left a successful minor league baseball career to come home, marry his sweetheart, Mary, and raise their family not far from where the winery is located today. The beautiful Drost Park is named after her father, and Wiemann has been very active in beautification of the area that is just a stone’s throw from the winery. “Actually, this whole area is my old stomping ground,” she said. “So I just wanted to bring something back to Maryville because I have so many friends, family and memories here, and it’s home. We used to swim, fish and ice skate on the lake in the park named after my dad – I think it’s the jewel of Maryville.” Having graduated with a master’s degree in finance; she enjoyed a 34-year career with the May Co. But she was ready to dive into something new and exciting. The winery idea soon took shape.

WEEKLY WINERY EVENTS

As a smart business owner, Wiemann sought out the best help she could find and hired a consultant who was a University of Illinois graduate in horticulture and also owned and operated an Illinois winery and vineyard. The crew planted their first three-acre crop of grape vines in 2004 and followed up each year with three more acres for the next four years. “I wanted to plant all 15 acres at once, but thank goodness, someone held me back!” Involved in all aspects of wine-making,

she studied wine-making at Piasa Winery in Godfrey. Ultimately, Villa Marie Winery is a family venture utilizing the skills of all four nephews, Mike, Bob and Tom Drost, and David Bitzer, as well as other family members and friends. Purchasing the winemaking production side of Piasa Winery in 2008, all production has since moved to Villa Marie. “We have the perfect climate for winemaking here in Illinois,” Wiemann said. Between the wines of Villa Marie and Piasa, visitors may choose from 26 different wines of all varieties at the spacious bar and tasting room in the restaurant. Both labels offer a selection of fine wines with grapes from Randolph and Madison counties. The wines are award-winning at the local and international levels. “But Villa Marie is so much more than a winery!” said one of the four event coordinators, Carol Bierbaum. “While we have special promotions almost daily, one of our big events is coming up on September 27, and we can’t wait! The second annual Fall Festival and Grape Stomp will be a wonderful day of music – 5 bands, in fact – food from the grill, great wine and yes, grape stomping!” Of course, Villa Marie is well-known for gorgeous weddings, wedding receptions and other special occasions. The setting is magical with perfectly manicured grounds, two lakes and “families” of white swans and ducks. Couples may choose from wedding packages to suit their style and budget. Choose from the Tuscany Room with seating for more than 350 or the Vino Room with seating up to 45 and a walk-out patio that overlooks the pergola. Mother-Daughter Team Up To Make Kitchen Design Easy

aving grown up the daughter of a kitchen designer in Paris, Ill., Valerie Adkins, owner of Kitchens by Valerie, is now happy to be working with her own daughter Jessica Adkins.

Once the above is complete, Kitchens By Valerie finds the contractor in the customer’s specific zip code to get the ball rolling. “The customer will work directly with that contractor and even pay that person directly. We set a target date with the contractor and remain in constant communication throughout the project.”

Starting five years ago while between jobs and working on her marketing degree at SIUE, “I really wasn’t sure what I wanted to do yet and it so happened that Mom needed me at the time. Then, after graduation I stayed on working more on the operation side of things while she does the actual kitchen designing,” Adkins said. “We really get along and I like the fact that we are working together. In fact, it has brought us closer together. Before we never saw each other and now we're together all the time!”

Kitchens by Valerie will give their customers cabinet samples and refer them to find their countertop and tile so they can pick everything out. “People always ask what’s going to be ‘in’ in 10 years,” Adkins said. “I usually tell people that painted cabinets, particularly white, is always here to stay – you see that with builders who use white for interior doors and trim. And you can make it modern or traditional. Of course a medium-tone brown stain is always popular with a little glaze on the doors. Wood floors are always popular, too.”

The duo wants potential clients to know that kitchen construction and remodeling is not as scary as one might think. “A lot of people think it will take too long or it will be too big of a mess, but in reality we can be finished with a project in two to three months depending on the cabinets,” she said. “We try to foresee problems that may arise, but obviously there can be issues that aren’t apparent at first. But we try to make it as perfect as possible and the majority of the time that comes true. Think of it as planning a wedding – once you get started it all falls into place.”

“SBS can complete many different types of building maintenance and repairs, from a leaky faucet to a complete room addition and even an entire house,” Debbi Scharf said. “Kent and I built our first house and our current house – we have that kind of expertise and knowledgeable, hard-working staff.” They have also completed many “whole-house” renovations, which is their favorite thing to do. “A friend of ours called us and wanted us to completely gut her parent’s home and renovate the entire structure,” she said. “We said “yes” of course! So they moved out and two months later when they saw it for the first time they just cried because they loved it so much. It was like one of the

Healthcare Data Breaches Put Local Residents At Risk ©

nbelievably, more than 30 million Americans have had their Protected Health Information breached by nearly 20,000 medical, dental and chiropractic offices across the country. While data breaches affecting retail stores like Target and Home Depot command the headlines, patient data breaches are actually a far bigger threat to local residents. “Illinois ranks fifth in the nation for healthcare data breaches,” said Jim Moore of Compliance by the Quarter. “Federal laws protecting patient privacy have been in place in the United States for nearly 20 years. But we find a majority of local doctors and dentists are disregarding them altogether.” Compliance by the Quarter is a Belleville-based HIPAA consulting organization with clients across the country. Moore, a Certified HIPAA Professional, has been working with healthcare practices for more than 30 years. “Some local hospitals ignore patient privacy as well,” Moore said, “but it’s largely an error of omission. They need an experienced, full-time Privacy Officer to handle patient information concerns, and they don’t have that person in place. Smaller practices are in the same position.” Moore said Illinois lags behind other states like Texas and California, which already have state-enforced patient privacy laws. “The lack of enforcement in Illinois has created a false sense of security for local practitioners,” he continued. “But a new round of federal audits kicks off later this year, and the fines for ignoring HIPAA can be catastrophic.” At risk in local medical and dental offices is patient data, which includes social security numbers, credit card information and records of illnesses and treatment. “Patients provide all the information their doctor asks for without asking why information is needed. When criminals steal electronic health records that contain all that data, the patient has everything at risk: social security,

credit cards, health insurance, prescriptions, bank accounts, tax refunds. The exposure is staggering,” Moore said. If so much patient data is being stolen, what happens to it? Moore pointed to something privacy consultants refer to as the ‘Dark Net.’“It’s a shadowy internet underworld where anonymous criminals buy and sell things like human beings, military-grade weapons and patient data. Stolen data is packaged and sold in bulk, which means that all data has some value.” According to Moore, stolen patient data files can fetch up to $1,000 each. “Most valuable are children’s records and the files of pain management patients. Kid’s files can be used again and again for years because there’s typically no social security number and no credit monitoring. Some data is sold to unethical healthcare providers. They use it to bill for services they’ve never rendered to patients they’ve never seen. Pain management patients’ information can be used to get prescription drugs which are then sold on the street,” Moore said. Moore believes lax computer security and untrained healthcare staff are putting thousands of local residents at risk. “Your doctor likely thinks hackers will never bother with a small practice,” Moore pointed out, “but the truth is, many small practices around here have already been hacked. They just don’t know it.” “Data is the currency of the 21st century,” Moore said. “Patients can help themselves by asking their doctor and dentist what steps are being taken to protect patient information. fter 40 years, Mabel and Larry Schubert are making the transition to a new owner of their successful smokehouse and meat packing company. A regional favorite, Schubert’s is now under the guidance of David Kossina along with this wife, Susan, and brother Mike Kossina and his wife Wenda. From one long-time Millstadt family to another, Schubert’s will maintain the highest quality standards for their products and offer outstanding service to their customers. Schubert’s wholesale and retail operation starts at slaughtering and ends in the retail meat case. Daily items include fresh beef and pork, cured meats, bacon, homemade sausages and German style specialty meats. All of the recipes will stay the same plus they are adding some new choices like the jalapeno and pineapple brat. Schubert’s Smokehouse also offers deer processing.

The store offers the best and freshest meats available, including their famous homemade sausages and bratwursts, but also has other canned and pickled items, treats for dogs, lots of bottled sauces and more. Another part of the business is catering. Along with all the “usual” types of catering, “I’ve been surprised at how popular pig roasts with all the fixings have become,” Kossina said. “It’s perfect for large gatherings and parties.” When the holidays roll around, don’t forget how inviting a basket from Schubert’s is with smoked meats and such – “we are quite well-known for these – they’re great for giftgiving!” They also offer smoked turkeys and hams for Thanksgiving and Christmas – call early to make your reservation.
