‘Tis The Season To Prepare For The Holidays

F

all is the perfect time to update, remodel and freshen the décor of your home. Chances are you are noticing little areas of your home that you wish you could change like the worn out carpet, outdated vinyl or old tile. Good news! Flooring is one of the top home improvement projects that can really make a difference in a short time. And getting started now will make those last few weeks before December 25 a lot less stressful. When it comes to home improvement projects for the holidays, first think about where people gather: kitchen, dining room, family room and/or basement. As the heart of the home, it’s no wonder why everyone at the party ends up in the kitchen. Even better, there isn't another room in your house more packed with possibility. “Gorgeous textured porcelains can be combined with a polished porcelain to create a classy, yet striking design in the kitchen. After all, that’s where all of our friends end up during those Saturday night dinner parties!” said AJ Skippers, manager at Flooring Systems

Residential, LLC in Collinsville. “Along with the tile on the floor, the backsplash can be designed with coordinating tile and a bit of glass can be incorporated for a splash of color. My favorite part of the backsplash is pulling a color from the counter, maybe a black or a deep java color and finding the perfect piece of glass, polished natural stone or even metal to sprinkle into the backsplash. It’s like a touch of jewelry for your kitchen.” Your kitchen can be a place people will want to gather.

are so durable – perfect for the family to play games and pets to run around,” she said. “They don’t show foot traffic as much as other styles. And we recommend using rubber padding which will make the floor so much softer.” For the home theater, Skippers likes the plush wools and nylons in pretty prints for a cozy, stylish atmosphere. “Interestingly, homeowners are becoming more adventurous with colors – permanent colors, too. They’re not worrying about resale value as much.”

The family room is easy. Gorgeous hardwoods throughout with colorful area rugs are the latest trend and make it easy to maintain on a weekly basis. Consider tiling a foyer with stylish 18-by-18 or 12-by-24 sizes – “less grout and the designs are more interesting,” Skippers said. “The larger tiles open up the feel of the room.”

A new bar would fit in nicely in the kitchen or lower level , “We could tile the floor, do a neat backsplash, and even custom niches in the wall for shelving,” Skippers said. “Glass tiles are popular in the bar for backsplash and tile is becoming popular for the front of the bar.”

Then there’s the basement or lower level that is perfect for the popular frieze carpets which come in a myriad of colors “It’s the shag of the 21st century! Frieze carpets

Window Treatments Can Be A Justifiable Luxury Lower your energy bills and protect your home furnishings with style By Jennaver Brown

Y

ou have wanted to put the final touch on your home’s décor and tie it all together with coordinating window treatments, but you aren’t sure that you can justify the expense. Consider then, that a properly designed window treatment can not only add beauty and style to your home but also work to significantly reduce your home maintenance costs over time. In fact, many energy experts recommend adding more efficient window coverings rather than going to the expense of replacing the windows. A product’s R-Value is a measurement of its ability to keep heat in and cold out. The higher the R-Value, the better that product is at retaining indoor warmth. A phenomenal new product designed to increase R-Value is the Hunter Douglas Architella™ cellular shade. This product features an innovative cell within a cell construction that provides more depth of color at the window, larger pleats and an R-Value that is more than twice that of a standard ¾-inch cellular product. In fact, the federal government recently recognized the energy efficiency of the Hunter Douglas Architella™ and gave it an Energy Star rating thus making it eligible for the $1,500 tax credit. Architella shades can add more than 3.5 to the R-value of your current window system. Incredibly, this figure is more than 8 times greater than the R-Value provided by a common 2-inch faux wood blind making it a better choice for long-term energy savings. Another elegant and time-tested solution for the reduction of heat loss at the window is the selection of classic shutter systems which offer an average R-Value of 2.5 and provide you with multiple design, privacy and light control options.

A product’s Summer U-Value is a measurement of its ability to reflect heat. For example, a window treatment that reduces incoming heat by 70 percent, has a summer U-Value of .30. The lower the U-Value, the more effective it is in reflecting heat away from your home. To reduce heat gain, select a low U-Value treatment with white or light colored backing and install it an inch or two from the glass to create an air pocket. Non-reflected heat that builds up in the pocket during the day will dissipate through the glass at night when the temperature outside cools. Not surprisingly, you will find that shutters and cellular shades can provide the low U-Values you need to lower your electric bill. Put your window treatments to work saving you money by employing them in the business of ultra-violet control and asset protection. Ultraviolet light entering your home as sunlight will quickly fade, weaken and destroy your furniture, flooring, upholstery and artwork. Classic or contemporary sheers are multi-talented in that they can reduce this incoming ultra-violet light by 65% or more while reducing glare, preserving outdoor visibility, adding beauty, and providing you with daytime privacy. Hunter Douglas has revolutionized the use of sheers by integrating them into beautiful horizontal and vertical products such as the versatile cordless Duolite® shade and the

popular Silhouette® and Luminette® shades designed to block 88% of incoming UV rays. An ever increasing variety of stunning sheer fabrics are now available on the market with affordable price points for custom made products. ADO has developed a clever method of adding sheers to your “not-so-pretty” vertical blinds. The Ado-Wrap® allows you to wrap your existing vertical blind in a custom sheer thus providing you with the benefits of a sheer during the day and a vertical blind at night. If you would like to justify the expense of luxurious custom window treatments in your home, work with an experienced window treatment professional to select hard-working window treatments that can meet all of your design requirements.Jennaver Brown is the owner of Eye on Design and a certified Window Treatment Consultant as recognized by the Window Coverings Association of America. Together, she and her staff offer more than 30 years of professional expertise in their field. Customers will find Eye on Design to be a full-service window fashions showroom featuring a beautiful Hunter Douglas Gallery™ and a tremendous line of custom fabrics. New Cabinets And Countertops Installed In One Day!

A

n updated kitchen is the number one favorite remodeling project for homeowners today. Those who employ the use of multiple contractors for a kitchen remodeling project might be in for a costly, lengthy remodel that is sure to drain their patience. There might be one contractor for the countertops, another for the backsplash and a third for the cabinets, each with different timelines and separate bills to keep organized. This can inconvenience your family for weeks or even months - leaving you without a kitchen, and with a house full of dust. Thankfully, there is a better option. There are companies that specialize in kitchen makeovers, and can give your kitchen new countertops, cabinets and backsplashes in just a few short days. The best part is they can execute your entire remodel without any tear-out or demolition. This means your house will never be filled with dust, and you won’t be filling the landfills with your old countertops and kitchen cabinets. This is possible through countertop and cabinet refacing - an innovative and green approach to remodeling that can cut costs and give you a fabulous new kitchen in no time at all! Kitchen cabinet and countertop refacing is one of the most popular new trends in home remodeling. Cabinet refacing is just how it sounds: the new cabinet face is adhered directly to the existing cabinet. This approach to remodeling is extremely green since it eliminates the waste

from demolition. It also saves homeowners a huge amount of time and hassles, making remodeling a fast, fun and affordable experience homeowners have no reason to put off. Countertop refacing is the same principle: a beautiful slab of granite or recycled glass can be measured and cut to fit snugly over your existing countertops. Covering your old tile, laminate, butcher block, brick or marble countertops is a quick way to give your kitchen a modern new look. Each beautiful slab is manufactured in 4-foot-by-10-foot sections, yet it is only 1â „4-inch thick, making it extremely lightweight. These slabs have superior heat-, scratch-, stain-, and bacteria-resistant surfaces, and are backed by a lifetime warranty. Available in a wide array of colors, all homeowners can find the perfect match for their existing decor or use their new countertop as a catalyst for a fresh new color scheme. These surfaces can also be installed for shower walls and bathtub surrounds due to their non-porous, maintenance free qualities. Matching granite or beautiful Italian glass mosaic tile backsplashes can be installed over your existing ones in this same fashion. For more information on kitchen and bathroom remodeling, you can contact Granite transformations at 636-728-1100; or visit one of two locations at 1750 Fenpark Drive in Fenton, MO, 63036 or 17409 Chesterfield Airport Road, Chesterfield MO, 63005; www.granitetransformations.com. Deck Drain System Creates Extra Outdoor Living Space

E

xclusive to the Metro East, RainAway Deck Drain System is ideal for the space under second-story decks to create a whole new “room” without worries of getting wet. The system collects and channels moisture away from the spaces between your planks. Attaching easily to your new or existing deck joists, RainAway effectively turns lower level patios into extra leisure and storage space – creating a usable and completely dry space under your deck. In addition, each system is reinforced with safety brackets to ensure stability. RainAway uses a special ventilation system to enhance airflow above and below the system to expedite drying after rainfall. Ventilation is very important to allow the system to dry out quickly and efficiently after a rainfall. Our system incorporates patent pending vents to allow for a movement of air above and below the systems, while maintaining the watertight space for you to use.

Most homeowners prefer to match up the deck drain system with the existing trim and downspouts currently on their house to allow for a truly personalized space. These “ceilings” will also support light fixtures, ceiling fans, swings, etc. The accessories are firmly attached to a joist to provide maximum stability. There are two types of systems offered: the original system is all aluminum with seamless panels and guttering; then there is the Hidden System which enables the homeowner to finish the “ceiling” however they like. “We still install the aluminum panels, but then we can put up whatever material you want on top of that like bead board,” Collins said.

the entire gutter system and appropriate number of downspouts. The RainAway System comes with a limited lifetime warranty. Locally owned by Collins and Warren Dissen, the Rainaway System can be installed in any size or shape. Call them today for a free estimate at (618) 210-8061 or (618) 781-5243; www.rainawayofstlouis.com.

Most installations can be completed within one to two days. More extensive and larger jobs may take longer to complete. Every RainAway System includes

“Simply put, we attach our ceiling on the underside of the deck. It drains the water away from the house and into a gutter system which leads to the downspout. Our roof is a ceiling under your deck, which keeps it dry and clean for entertaining, storage, and many other uses,” said Michael Collins, co-owner of Rainaway. The panels for deck drain systems come in 26 stock colors and 5 premium colors.

How many times do you wonder to yourself, “What should I do with this ‘stuff’ I’ve accumulated over the years and is now taking up much needed space in the basement or garage?” “Storage buildings situated nicely on the outskirts of the property or in the driveway can be a perfect solution now that there are so many sophisticated styles and colors from which to choose,”said Bob Martin of Classic Buildings.“There is sure to be a unit to suit everyone’s needs.” Here’s a look at just a few of the 11 models offered at Classic Buildings – all come in sizes from smallest to large as well as custom sizes: The Mini Barn is an excellent choice for things like outdoor tools, seasonal yard decor, pool equipment, and garden tools. Add a ramp and you can store a wheelbarrow, cart or wagon as well. The Barn is just a little larger than the mini and includes a loft area to store smaller items. The Lofted Barn has two lofts that are positioned where you want them, and can store your yard ornaments, yard sale items, Christmas decorations, etc. The loft door actually opens so you have easier access. The Quaker Shed is an attractive, portable storage shed with engineered trusses. You can even add flower boxes and shutters to enhance the beauty of the Quaker shed. The Garage is a perfect storage building for your car, ATV or garden tractor. The entry door makes for easy access. This shed is also a portable building and provides perfect storage for your larger tools, valuables, motorcycles and such.

Add a workbench and a tool organizer and it becomes a perfect workshop. Electricity is also an option. There is also a doublewide garage available. The company also has three different cabins in all sizes. Here is just one of those: The Lofted Cabin features a full loft and is the most space-efficient cabin available. Place a mattress in the loft for a great sleeping area. It comes with a pull-down loft stairs, and with the full ceiling finishing out this cabin is a breeze. The porch makes it the perfect weekend getaway cabin by the lake or in the woods. It can be finished on the inside, and it becomes a perfect guesthouse. Classic Buildings is known for their Amish craftsmanship that is reflected in the superior quality features and construction. In fact, the company is so confident in their products that they offer a lifetime guarantee. “We really provide affordable storage buildings in a wide range of sizes and styles built with the highest quality and service available,” Martin said. “The three words under our logo say it all: Quality, value and style.” Classic Buildings also offers vinyl-sided sheds for those homeowners with covenants in their subdivisions requiring the same.

Local Backyard “Golf Course” Debuts on National TV

5th Annual Golden Bear Tournament Filmed For Golf Channel Program

A

ll the world’s a stage for a Belleville couple whose backyard country club attracted the attention of the popular television program, “Golf In America,” on the Golf Channel. Featured in the second season of the series, a crew of journalists and photographers enjoyed visiting Golden Bear Country Club’s Fifth Annual Golden Bear Open at the home of Debbie and Fred Cavese who live on – surprise! – Jack Nicklaus Drive in the Orchards. “The Golf Channel folks did a great job of capturing our backyard, the tournament, etc. and presenting it to the golf world,” Fred Cavese said. “Debbie and I had not seen the episode before it aired on July 27 and we got a little choked up at how well the feature segment told our story and shared our backyard with a worldwide golf audience.” Golden Bear Country Club is a backyard 9-hole “golf course” that has been beautifully constructed by professionals as well as the Caveses themselves. Debbie serves as president while Fred is head greenskeeper and tournament director. For a detailed description of the course, they invite visitors to their web site which also features many photos on the start to finish installment as well as the many fun events hosted by the Caveses such as the Fifth Annual Golden Bear Tournament. This particular tournament debuted in the summer of 2006. “We came up with the idea of a couples' barbecue and golf tournament for my neighborhood golf buddies and their wives,” he said. The event consists of a social/practice hour, a 3-hole couples' “alternate shot” format tournament, dinner, a trivia contest, and the awarding of prizes.

Twelve couples competed in the inaugural event in 2006, and the tournament has grown in popularity since then. In fact, 16 couples participated in the 2010 edition. The whole idea of the Golden Bear Country Club started with their desire to simply have a putting green to practice their short game whenever they wanted. “We didn’t have this great vision at first,” Cavese said. But after the green was installed, one thing led to another and it is truly a miniature version of Augusta National. The Caveses thought the perfect name would of course be Golden Bear Country Club not only because they live on Jack Nicklaus Drive but because of their deep admiration for the golfer. Each year, the Caveses invite Jack and Barbara Nicklaus to participate in the Golden Bear Open with the neighborhood couples, but, to date, their schedule has precluded their attendance. However, Mr. Nicklaus' regrets letters are nice for their vast collection of memorabilia autographed by the golfer himself. In fact, while he did not help create Golden Bear Country Club, he has not objected to the use of his logo and name. The Caveses also point out that the golf course is purely non-profit fun. To view the segment, either visit the web site www.gbcc.webs.com or watch for reruns of the show “Golf In America” at various times of the day and night. Reruns will occur until season three next summer. There is also a delightful segment on the web site with Heidi Glaus of “Today In St. Louis” who visited the course and brought her own clubs. Do You Believe In Ghosts? Bet you will after visiting the most haunted building in the most haunted town in Illinois If you are of the feint of heart, you might reconsider reading this story. If you like a good ghost story – a real ghost story – read on. Did you know Alton is the most haunted town in Illinois? Furthermore, the Mineral Springs Hotel is the most haunted building in Alton. Once an elegant hotel and spa, its history is filled with tragedy, murders, suicides, natural and accidental deaths, as well as many happy memories. Many of these earth-bound spirits remain to haunt, and make their presence felt and known. Mineral Springs Haunted Tours is the only tour that takes you into and through this magnificent old structure. Guests can choose a “haunted overnight” where they literally camp in the haunted pool area with sleeping bags, air mattresses, reclining lawn chairs, etc., whatever makes you comfortable. There are currently no hotel rooms in use. “Anything you experience on the ghost tour is real,” Wayne Hensley, Lecturer/Historian, said. “We don’t fake anything…we don’t have to.”

These tours last approximately 3-1/2 to 4 hours. Mineral Springs Mall offers walking, dinner and overnight options year-round: dinner tours and haunted overnights start at 7p.m.; walking tours start at 7:30 p.m. Tickets may be purchased online at www.mineralspringshauntedtours.com. Call (618) 465-3200 with questions and more information. Look for “Pearl,” the Mineral Springs Haunted Hearse in front of the Mineral Springs Mall, at 301 E Broadway in Alton.

Owner Janet Kohler, agreed and said, “So far this season has been very active due to construction in the building. They ‘the ghosts’ get upset when their surroundings are disturbed.” Walking tours meet at Mineral Springs Mall at 301 E. Broadway and begin with a lecture about the history of the building and Alton. Hensley then leads the group on an eight-block walk of 10 to 12 other haunted locations actually entering them depending on availability. “We always visit the slave tunnels under the old Enos Sanitarium,” he said. “After our historic walk, we return to Mineral Springs where we tour the entire five-level building, use investigative equipment (ghost hunting), perform a séance in the men's pool, and end with a tarot card reading. This is a hands-on experience, we invite cameras and recorders.”

A renaissance is occurring in Breese and Flavors Café and Wine Bar is helping to pave the way. Lynn Gebke, the owner of the new artistic wine bar, is a local resident and prominent member of the Clinton County Art Guild. Gebke said that creating Flavors was a fulfillment of the right things showing up at the right time after a local artist mentioned wanting to display their work. Gebke decided to turn her dreams of owning her own art and wine business into reality. The artist within her wanted the building her business would reside in to have character. The same day she planned the criteria for that building, she found a for sale sign in front of the structure she really wanted. Gebke found it not only to be structurally sound, but the woodwork was all in very good condition. After months of work, Gebke is open for business. The floors are a glossy wood that match the original woodwork. The walls and ceilings are all textured and in neutral colors to better display local artists’ work. The cozy atmosphere is perfect for people to come and relax either with a cup of coffee or with friends and a glass of wine. During the warmer months, the outside seating area is nice for enjoying the great outdoors. Free Wi-Fi is available as well.

Concerned About Your Child’s Report Card? •Problems with tracking •Poor comprehension and attention span •Loses place while reading •Points to words while reading •Avoids close work such as reading •Reverses letters or words in reading and writing •Homework takes FOREVER when it shouldn’t Poor report cards can often provide you with a clue as to what may be troubling your child. What subjects give your child the most difficulty? Is there a common denominator? For example: After third grade it is expected that your child knows how to read and can now read to gain the knowledge required for good grades. But what if your child is still struggling with reading? What happens then? It would be expected that ANY subject that requires reading would be difficult. Does your child struggle with reading? Love being read to, but hates to read. Is he or she an “auditory learnerâ€? or is something else wrong? The Learning Disabilities Association of America says that when you find a child who is struggling with learning you should check for vision and hearing problems. Unfortunately, most people incorrectly assume there is nothing wrong with a child’s vision if he or she can see 20/20. Dr. Tom Unger, optometrist with an office in Troy, said, “If you have a child who is struggling with reading and schoolwork it is vital that you understand that being able to see the letters on the eye chart is just one of over 20 visual skills critical to reading and learning.â€? A developmental Optometrist such as Dr. Unger can help exam your child’s vision beyond the 20/20 test. Children do not know how they are supposed to see so they rarely complain when they have difficulty seeing the words on the page. Therefore it becomes critical that you are aware of some of the most obvious symptoms which indicate that a child could have a vision problem, including:

If your child has any of these symptoms, he or she may have an undiagnosed vision problem that is interfering with academic success. Please take the time to learn more about the vital role vision plays in your child’s academic performance, it could make all the difference!

For more information or to schedule an appointment for a developmental eye exam call Unger Eye Care at (618) 667-2020.

Stop Living With Knee Pain. Introducing A Program Designed for ALL Grades of Osteoarthritis Including Bone-on-Bone Are you tired of living with sore, painful knees but don’t want to have knee replacement surgery?

Are You a Candidate?

The good news is that recent treatment options show that the pain associated with OA (osteoarthritis) of the knee may no longer need to be considered an inevitable part of aging.

More About APG

Have You Given Up Hope? Many people have already tried exercise, but found it to be painful without providing lasting relief. Many people have also tried injections of cortisone, Hyalgan, or Synvisc with little to no long-term relief. “At Associated Physicians, we believe in investing in your body and well-being today to hopefully save you from the pain and suffering of surgery later. — William Thom, M.D. Over the last six years, Associated Physicians Group’s (APG’s) Alternative-to-Knee-Replacement Program has worked wonders for mild, moderate, and even severe (bone-on-bone) OA. Many people who have tried cortisone, Hyalgan, or Synvisc injections unsuccessfully have finally found pain relief through this program. In fact, the program has been so successful that physicians from all over the U.S. have come to APG for training.

“Our clinical experience of combining the fluoroscopically-guided injections with Theracisertm rehab has shown superior outcomes than to just doing injections or therapy alone. It’s the program as a whole, not just the injections, that has made it so successful, says William Thom, MD.

Associated Physicians Group is an integrated Pain Management and Physical Therapy facility. They combine the skills of a Board Certified, Fellowship-Trained Pain Physician (Dr. William Thom), a Nurse Practitioner, Physician Assistant, Physical Therapists, and Chiropractic Physicians. Having all of these providers under one roof saves the patient time and money.

Put Your Best Face Forward Introducing! Breakthrough Aesthetic Therapy For Clearer Skin

A

re you frustrated with acne and wish you had clear, healthy skin? You’re not alone. In fact, over 60 million Americans suffer from acne and unfortunately, many have had difficulty finding a treatment that works. Most people who struggle with acne have probably tried manual exfoliants, harsh chemical peels, over-the-counter cleansers or oral medications only to continue breaking out. Not only is this condition frustrating to people of all ages, there are some real dangers and myths about acne. The Dangerous Consequences of Ignoring your Acne Problem • Permanent facial scarring • Side effects of medications • Need for long term, expensive, frequently futile medications Acne Myths Washing your face more or popping zits makes acne go away faster • Exercise and sweating causes more acne • Chocolate and greasy pizza cause acne • My acne will go away in a few months

There is now a breakthrough, painless acne laser treatment called Isolaz that is offered by Metroeast Cosmetic Specialty in Highland. “Isolaz is a unique acne light treatment that combines a vacuum and painless broadband lighttodeepcleanseandpurifyyourporesfrom the inside out,” said Dr. Keith Thomae.

Benefits of Isolaz vs. Other Treatments There are several key benefits of Isolaz over other laser and light based acne treatments: • Only system to clear and purify your pores from the inside out • Immediate drying and flattening of pimples within 24 to 48 hours post treatment • Effective on non-responders to traditional therapies including patients who had tried topicals, antibiotics and other lasers • Significant decrease in number, interval and severity of “break-outs” • Decrease in the amount of oil production, starting after the first treatment • Faster clearance of redness associated with breakouts • Isolaz is painless while other lasers can be very painful • It does not require pre-treatment with anesthesia or numbing gels • Faster - faces can be treated in less than 10 minutes • Combines skin rejuvenation with deep pore purification for radiant looking skin Other Isolaz Treatments • Skin Rejuventaion: Not only does Isolaz successfully treat acne, it helps with skin rejuvenation by painlessly removing uneven pigmentation, unsightly veins and sun damage. Skin will absolutely glow leaving you with a fresh, clean complexion.

• Hair Removal: Imagine never having to shave again. Isolaz hair removal is painless, and can be done in less than 20 minutes. • Deep Pore Purification: Visible reduction in pore size and improved skin tone for a brighter, healthier complexion.

The staff of Metroeast Cosmetic Specialty provides comprehensive medical care to persons with troublesome varicose veins and spider veins, state-of-the-art laser hair removal, the best acne removal option with Isolaz, and liposculpture. Dr. Thomae has been an Associate Professor Surgery as well as a Director of Trauma in Jackson, Mississippi. ou might call Linda Soteropoulos the prodigal daughter of Merle Norman products. “I can’t tell you how many times I’ve said, ‘OK, it’s an expense I can cut back on,’ just to find myself back at Nancy’s door!” she laughed. “In fact, I have recently become unemployed and had to decide what I can do without – I cannot do without Merle Norman!” "I immediately fell in love with all their products and makeup," she said. "I've been using Merle Norman now for about 10 years.." “I tried all kinds of other products including good products from the department store – that would just cause break outs,” Soteropoulos said. “I also have allergies to perfumes which are reflected in my eyes: I don’t have to worry about that with Merle Norman cosmetics.” A big fan of regular monthly facials given personally by Nancy Eihausen, owner of the Fairview Heights studio, Soteropoulos said, “Quite frankly, I now look good without makeup at all because I regularly use Miracol (face masque) combined with the Brilliant-C serum and Wrinkle Smoother creams. It makes me feel good when I know I look good.”

“Of course we have products for every budget and often we mix and match different lines to suit each individual,” said Eihausen. In fact, a monthly facial is offered for free to clients. “The facial is a glycolic peel and skin care treatment,” she said. The studio also offers many gifts with purchase which often comes with new products to try and handy items like makeup bags. “The Luxiva line that Linda uses contains advanced anti-aging products,” Eihausen said. Specifically, the Luxiva Wrinkle Smoother helps to lift, firm and revitalize skin, making it look and feel more smooth and supple. It also improves the look of aging skin by reducing the appearance of deep lines and wrinkles caused by facial movements.

Marcel

Brown

Q&A With Personal Computer Expert Marcel Brown Q: I have Windows XP and it is time to move on. What should I do? A: I always feel it is better to control your technology than to let it control you. IWith this in mind, my recommendation is not to wait until your current computer fails you, but to start planning and budgeting now. This will give you time to prepare for the downtime and transition of data from the old computer to the new. There are a few exceptions where you may want to stick with Windows XP. If you really think you need to stick with Windows XP, please contact me and we can discuss your details. I think for most individuals and many small businesses, the best option is to purchase a new computer.

Q: What is a 4G wireless network and how does it differ from a 3G network? A: There is a lot of buzz in the technology industry about 4G wireless networks. As well, some wireless providers, such as Sprint and Clear, are advertising their 4G networks on TV and other mainstream media. As with many technology buzzwords, terms like 3G and 4G can be confusing to those who don’t spend all day studying the latest tech trends. The “G in 3G and 4G stands for “generation. In this case we are talking about digital cellular wireless networks. As with most technologies, the next generation is usually bigger or faster and that holds true for 4G wireless as well. 4G networks promise to deliver speeds much faster than today’s 3G networks. In fact, the speeds should be similar to cable or DSL services.

Q: Mac or PC? A: In today’s day and age, do not assume you must purchase another Windows-based computer. More people are purchasing Macintosh computers and love them. Certainly the fact that Macintosh computers do not get viruses is a huge benefit, but they are easy to use and are compatible with the data used on Windows machines.

Marcel Brown writes two technology blogs covering various industry topics, offerings tips and advice, answering questions, and reviewing new technology gadgets. Fall 2010

Business Profile Salvatore Cincotta Photography: Well-known photographer opens Studio C Known as the cool photographer in town, Sal Cincotta and wife, Taylor, have called O’Fallon home for the past few years. In just a short time their business, Salvatore Cincotta Photography has become known for their modern, forward-thinking photography. In fact, they have won 11 international awards and their work is displayed throughout the world in various publications.

A shoot with Sal Cincotta Photography is a very personalized experience and always on location – wherever in the world that might be - literally. “This kind of photography business has grown exponentially.” So much so that they have been picked by Great Day St. Louis to be their photography expert – “I’m on about four times per year.” Just recently he photographed show host Matt Chambers and his family. “Fall is a great time for a family portrait.”

Cincotta is from New York City and Taylor from Texas – how they ended up here is still a mystery but they both are thrilled at how well it has turned out. “When we first started this together – when we first got to town – we were told our style would not be successful,” he reminisces. “And we thought, ‘hhmm, are we in the wrong part of the country?’”

With all this success, a need arose for Studio C that will offer photo shoots in the studio only. “The customer will get that same great experience but it won’t be quite so involved – a little less time,” Cincotta said.

But what has happened has been just the opposite of the naysayers! “Our stylized photography shoots with high school seniors and weddings have shaken it up!” he said. “The biggest complaint we hear is that photographers here are too traditional. Some parents say they’re still using the same backgrounds used when they were kids!”

He and Taylor have rehabbed the building at 115 E. 1st Street in O’Fallon - 3,000 square feet – with all-new hardwood floors and a fresh modern look blended with the classic style of the original building. For more information, call Sal Cincotta Photography at 618-206-8619; Studio C at 618-206-8619; and visit the web site at www.salcincotta.com.

You have put money into your kitchen, bathroom, basement, entertainment room, bedroom and living room.
