Cancer Patients Can Find Special Skin-Care Products, Wigs At Merle Norman-Fairview Fortunately, there is a lot of help in the Metro East community to assist people through their challenging journey. Merle Norman in Fairview Heights is a sweet refuge where simple things like wigs, turbans, sleep caps, makeup, eyebrows, eyelashes and skin care products can mean a difference in how a person undergoing treatment for cancer feels about herself. With over 150 wigs in stock in a broad range of colors, there is bound to be something for everyone. If a particular wig is not available in the store, Sabrina Fudge, owner, said she can get it within a week. The staff has received extensive training and education in the fit, and selection, of wigs to help customers make the best choice.
create a natural eyebrow appearance with our Brow Wow brow care, ” Fudge said. "While it's our sincerest wish that nobody should have to face cancer, we are here to help." From now through October 31, customers may donate $5 in the store to the Breast Cancer Research Fund and receive a goodie bag with some favorite petite treats. Customers are invited to come in once a month for a free facial and consultation. Visit the Merle Norman Studio in Fairview Heights across from Schnucks or call (618) 624-FACE.
“And if the wig is bought in the studio, I can tweak, cut or trim it to make it perfect for the customer,” said Fudge. Knowing how the skin changes for those going through chemotherapy, Fudge has products to put moisture back into the skin such as Energizing Concentrate and Changing Skin Moisturizer along with the Gentle Solutions System (pictured at left).
H
earing a diagnosis of cancer isn’t something we can imagine unless the disease has personally touched us ourselves. Women undergoing treatment for cancer can suffer from many side effects including hair loss and dry skin.
It may be necessary to change one’s foundation color or formula, blushes and lipsticks, too, and Merle Norman is there to lend a hand in making the transition easier. Many foundations and makeup items have moisturizers already in them. Of course Merle Norman has hydrating facials and masks to lend moisture to the skin as well. Eyebrows can be affected during treatment and “we can help you

FRUSTRATED WITH REPORT CARDS?
W
hether your child works very hard and still gets a poor report card, or your child avoids reading and homework as much as possible, Unger Eye Care may be able to help. When a child complains that he can’t see the board, your immediate thought is to schedule an eye exam. But when your child brings home a poor report card, you should also consider that a sign to schedule an eye exam. Why an eye exam? When a child struggles with reading and nothing seems to help consistently, it is a sign that a vision problem is underlying your child’s difficulties. Does your child love being read to, but hates to read? Is he or she an “auditory learner?” These are signs of a vision problem.
• Problems with tracking • Poor comprehension and attention span • Loses place while reading • Points to words while reading • Avoids close work such as reading • Reverses letters or words in reading and writing • Homework takes FOREVER when it shouldn’t
If your child has any of these issues, he or she may have an undiagnosed vision problem that is interfering with academic success. For more info on vision and learning, please call (618) 667-2020.
From STRUGGLING...To SUCCESS! 1 out of 4 children struggle with reading and learning because of undiagnosed vision problems.
The Learning Disabilities Association of America says that when you find a child who is struggling with learning you should check for vision and hearing problems.
Does Your Child... • Dislike reading? • Skip or reread lines? • Prefer to be read to? • Lose place when reading? • Have trouble remembering what has been read? • Have difficulty paying attention? ADD/ADHD? • Make numbers/letter reversals? • Have reading /homework take longer than it should?
Unfortunately, most people incorrectly assume there is nothing wrong with a child’s vision if he or she can see “20/20.” Dr. Tom Unger, optometrist with an office in Troy, said, “If you have a child who is struggling with reading and schoolwork it is vital you understand that being able to see the letters on the eye chart is just one of over 20 visual skills critical to reading and learning.” Children do not know how they are supposed to see so they rarely complain when they have difficulty seeing the words on the page. Therefore it becomes critical that you are aware of some of the most obvious symptoms which indicates a child could have a vision problem, including:
ELIMINATE DOUBT! If your child has any of the above symptoms, he or she may have a 100% correctable vision-based learning
problem. Children who once struggled go from failure to success when these vision problems are treated. Call us today to schedule a
Developmental Vision Evaluation.

The Holiday Shoppe Opens On October 27 at That Finishing Touch in O’Fallon
Find affordable decorations for Fall, Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas plus the usual array of home décor and gifts.
S
ince opening in February 2015, customers continue to discover excellent pricing, free decorating advice and a wide variety of furniture, home décor, and art pieces at That Finishing Touch in O’Fallon Centre.
In addition, Kreider will be giving “Make Your Own Wreath” classes where she will teach "students" how to make a gorgeous wreath that can be taken home! Need to host a holiday event for a group or club? Ask about an evening event hosted in the shop after our normal hours.
The owner of That Finishing Touch, Ricka Kreider, has seen her business increase month to month as clients and customers have come to appreciate her eye for decorating as well as her ability to offer a variety of unusual and classic décor items at very reasonable prices.
As in the past, she will also take on a limited number of clients’ homes and businesses for custom holiday decorating. She still has a few slots available if you are interested, but her book fills up quickly.
This time of year, attention turns to the holiday seasons. “The Holiday Shoppe” promises to be unique and beautiful, and offer inspiring ideas for your seasonal décor. Kreider has spent the last year gathering holiday items to create “The Holiday Shoppe” scheduled to open Thursday, October 27 through December. Shoppers can expect excellent value on all of the treasures found in “The Holiday Shoppe” at That Finishing Touch. What treasures can you expect to find? Fall, Halloween and Thanksgiving themed items, decorated Christmas trees, a wide array of reasonably priced decorations/ornaments, and Christmas décor of all types. Custom-made wreaths, garland and bows are made to order just for you in the store and offered at very competitive prices. Last year, “The Holiday Shoppe” filled approximately 70 percent of the store, however, based on customer feedback from 2015, there will be a balance struck between holiday items, the usual unique home décor and gift items. That Finishing Touch will also offer items from “Poo¬Pourri,” soy candles/melts as well as local artists’ creations.
In preparation for restaging the store, That Finishing Touch will host their second annual, two-week “Once a year 20% off everything in the shop to make room for the Holiday redo sale (no additional discounts).” The date is October 8 through 22. Following the sale, That Finishing Touch will be closed October 25 through 26 (Tuesday and Wednesday) and re-open Thursday, October 27 from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. with an Open House all day offering light refreshments and door prizes - please stop in for a look at the transformation! The store will also open at 9 a.m. on Black Friday for those of you starting your shopping the day after Thanksgiving - come by for a little respite and enjoy a cup of coffee with us! Visit That Finishing Touch, Ltd. at 629 West Highway US 50 in O’Fallon Centre next to Walgreens or call (618) 726-7811. Items in the store can be viewed in the “Galleries” tab under the “Current Displays” and “New Arrivals” pages which are updated weekly at www.thatfinishingtouchltd.com. Normal store hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday.

FINALLY! An Affordable Solution
C
To Uneven Concrete
ommunities everywhere are plagued with uneven sidewalks and steps, and sunken patios and driveways. These are more than inconveniences - they represent dangerous and unsightly conditions. Every property owner - residential and commercial - is looking for cost effective solutions to these vital and necessary repairs. By drilling a small, 1-inch hole in an existing slab (from sidewalk blocks to airport runways), an environmentally safe slurry is then hydraulically injected into the existing slab and lifts it to its original position: fast, cost effective and guaranteed. In 2007, Tony and Karen Goforth of Collinsville discovered A-1 Concrete and this innovative technology, and joined forces with the company. “We call it concrete leveling, but the original term is mud jacking,” said Tony Goforth. “You may also hear the terms slab jacking, concrete raising, injection leveling - whatever you want to refer to it as - it will save you time, money and your concrete. We also offer caulking and crack repair. “Our product combined with customer service gives a great competitive edge in the market,” Goforth said.
The Differences Between Concrete Leveling vs Poly Leveling The old term and method was "Mud Jacking." It has been refined to a material of crushed limestone, mixed Portland cement and water, wihch is then - under low pressure - injected through a 1-inch diameter hole about the size of a quarter. The concrete slabs being raised and leveled are more easily maneuvered back into place as close as possible with concrete leveling. This is unlike foam that continues to expand even after injection has stopped which can cause the slab to be lifted too high. In addition, the foam sets in 20 seconds so no adjustments can be made. A1's concrete leveling material is proven, stays in place and can be adjusted during the pumping process. In addition, there is some uncertainty about how long the foam procedure will last under the concrete.
Benefits of Concrete Leveling Over Replacement • The process is completed and ready for use in a matter of hours. • Landscaping and adjacent areas are usually unaffected. • Concrete leveling reduces job time, energy utilization and environmental problems associated with concrete demolition and disposal. • Leveling usually represents a savings of 50 to 75% over replacement.

Celebrating 25 Years, McCullough’s Showcases The New Waterproof Flooring
M
cCullough’s Flooring is a family owned and operated business that has been dedicated to providing quality and affordable flooring products and installations since 1991. Specializing in both residential and commercial projects, the company relocated almost six years ago to 4400 North Belt West, Belleville. They have recently added on to the building to make room for a “cash-and-carry” area for the do-it-yourselfers. “Because flooring is an investment in your home that lasts many years, you want the best quality products and installation that fits your lifestyle and budget,” co-owner Tracy McCullough said. “McCullough’s Flooring staff is trained to guide you quickly and effortlessly through the selection process of finding the perfect floor.” Indeed they offer a long list of products: carpet, ceramic, porcelain, natural stone, hardwood, luxury vinyl tile, vinyl, laminate, bamboo and cork. A well-known name in flooring, of course, is Shaw Floors and McCullough’s carries a wide range of their products including the newest styles that are waterproof. Find new products in the store such as luxury vinyl, which come in tile and wood looks, as well as waterproof carpet that are making bold statements for busy families. Installation is one the most important aspects of purchasing a new floor and McCullough’s guarantees their installation. “Our installers are well-trained employees of our company so you can count on their expertise,“ said co-owner, Russell McCullough, who has over 25 years of flooring
installation experience. While he no longer installs floors himself, rest assured his knowledge and eye for quality is present on every project. “We really are a one-stop shop for your remodeling projects,“ said Tracy McCullough. “Over the years we have developed lasting relationships with professionals in related fields, from kitchen and bath design, including cabinets and countertops, to any type of interior design project you might have.” In addition to flooring, the company has the most stylish selection of ceramic, porcelain, glass and natural stone tiles to design a backsplash in the kitchen as well as shower and tub surrounds, and patio surfaces. McCullough’s also carries a wide selection of floor care products, such as Armstrong Once N Done, Bruce Hardwood and Laminate Floor Care Kits, Bona Cleaners, just to name a few. You have wanted to put the final touch on your home’s décor and tie it all together with coordinating window treatments, but you aren’t sure that you can justify the expense. Consider then, that the properly designed window treatment can not only add beauty and style to your home but also work to significantly reduce your home maintenance costs over time. A well engineered plan to dress your windows in the right shutters, silks, sheers or shades will increase your home’s energy efficiency throughout the year and protect your furniture and flooring investments from the permanent damage caused by direct sunlight.
Window Treatments with
beauty and brains.
Lower your energy bills and protect your home furnishings with style.
With approximately 44 percent of your utility bill attributed to heating and cooling, energy efficient window treatments can translate into measurable year-round savings. Many energy experts recommend adding more efficient window coverings rather than going to the expense of replacing the windows. Use of window treatments to control drafts and heat loss dates back hundreds of years to those heavy velvet puddled draperies found in the castles of Europe. Your local window treatment professional can introduce you to the most energy-efficient products available today. A product’s R-Value is a measurement of its ability to keep heat in and cold out. The higher the R-Value, the better that product is at retaining indoor warmth. A phenomenal product designed to increase R-Value is the Hunter Douglas Architella™ cellular shade. This product features an innovative twist that provides more depth of color at the window and an R-Value of 4.5 in addition to your current window system. Incredibly, this figure is more than 7 times greater than the R-Value provided by a common 2” faux wood blind making it a better choice for long-term energy savings. Another elegant and time-tested solution for the reduction of heat loss at the window is the selection of classic shutter systems which offer an average R-Value of 2.5 and provide you with multiple levels of privacy and light control. A product’s Summer U-Value is a measurement of its ability to reflect heat. For example, a window treatment that reduces incoming heat by 70 percent, has a summer U-Value of .30. The lower the U-Value, the more effective it is in reflecting heat away from your home. To reduce heat gain, select a low U-Value treatment with white or light colored backing and install it an inch or two from the glass to create an air pocket. Non-reflected heat that builds up in the pocket during the day will dissipate through the glass at night when the temperature outside cools. Not surprisingly, you will find that shutters and cellular shades can provide the low U-Values you need to lower your electric bill. Put your window treatments to work saving you money by employing them in the business
of ultra-violet control and asset protection. Ultraviolet light entering your home as sunlight will quickly fade, weaken and destroy your furniture, flooring, upholstery and artwork. Sheers are multi-talented in that they can reduce this incoming ultra-violet light by 65% or more while reducing glare, preserving outdoor visibility, adding beauty, and providing you with daytime privacy.
If you would like to justify the expense of custom window treatments in your home, work with an experienced window treatment professional to select hard-working window treatments that can meet all of your design requirements. You shouldn’t be afraid to invest in window treatments that look magnificent in your home if they are designed to reduce your home maintenance costs.
Hunter Douglas has revolutionized the use of sheers by integrating them into beautiful horizontal and vertical products such as the versatile cordless Duolite® shade and the popular Silhouette® and Luminette® shades designed to block 88% of incoming UV rays.

An ever increasing variety of stunning sheer fabrics are now available on the market with affordable price points for custom made products. ADO has developed a clever method of adding sheers to your “not-so-pretty” vertical blinds. The Ado-Wrap® allows you to wrap your existing vertical blind in a custom sheer thus providing you with the benefits of a sheer during the day and a vertical blind at night.

AdviCoach Announces Its 2016 Client Of The Year By Teresa Pedigo, Business Coach
O
n September 24, I had the honor of accepting the AdviCoach 2016 Client of the Year award on behalf of my client Scharf Building Services LLC (SBS), during the annual conference. To win this prestigious award, a business coach must nominate a client who has performed well or exceeded the financial goals they established; made transformational changes in their business; and successfully implemented strategies to handle increased growth. SBS, owned by Debbi and Kent Scarf, is a full-service general contractor with years of experience in both residential and commercial properties. Knowing they needed to plan for the future, yet not making the time to do so, SBS decided to work with me beginning July 28, 2015. The Scharfs are the perfect example of creating a plan and working the plan, plus being open to implementing new procedures as growth occurred. It has been my true pleasure working with them to create more success in their already successful business.
Debbi Scharf provided this testimonial upon being notified of the award, “We wanted to thank you for everything you have done to help us achieve more than what we ever could have expected. With your guidance and support, we have well surpassed not only our sales goals, but our growth in general. Specifically, you have made us accountable for things and opened us up to different ways of operating our business to make it more successful - all without judgment - as well as the patience you have given us in this, our best business year yet.” This national award was timed perfectly with the 10th Anniversary of SBS, officially on September 26. What could working with me as your Business Coach do for your business? Could your business be the AdviCoach 2017 Client of the Year? Contact me and we can discuss turning today’s dreams into tomorrow’s realities. Contact me today to discuss taking your business to the next level: tpedigo@advicoach.com or (217) 433-6809.

Walk To End Alzheimer’s Set For October 8 At SWIC
T
Participants Raise Critically Needed Funds for Alzheimer’s Care, Support and Research
he Alzheimer’s Association is inviting Belleville residents to unite in a movement to reclaim the future for millions by participating in the Alzheimer’s Association Walk to End Alzheimer’s. Walk to End Alzheimer’s will take place on Saturday, Oct. 8 at Southwestern Illinois College in Belleville. Walk to End Alzheimer’s is more than a walk. It is an experience for participants in Belleville who will learn about Alzheimer's disease and how to get involved with this critical cause, from advocacy opportunities and clinical studies enrollment to support programs and services. Walk participants also honor those affected by Alzheimer's disease with the poignant Promise Garden ceremony. “Alzheimer’s is one of the leading causes of death in the United States and we need to take the steps to fight it,” said President/CEO of the Alzheimer’s Association St. Louis Chapter, Stacy Tew-Lovasz. “The Walk to End Alzheimer’s is about shedding light on Alzheimer’s, raising those funds that help fight the disease and also about bringing the whole community together.”
In addition to the two-mile walk, participants will enjoy good food, entertainment, family fun and a special tribute to those who have experienced or are experiencing Alzheimer’s. Alzheimer’s disease is a growing epidemic and the nation’s sixth-leading cause of death. As baby boomers age, the number of individuals living with Alzheimer’s disease will rapidly escalate, increasing well beyond today’s more than 5 million Americans to as many as 16 million by 2050. The Alzheimer’s Association Walk to End Alzheimer’s is the world’s largest event to raise awareness and funds for Alzheimer’s care, support and research. Since 1989, the Alzheimer’s Association mobilized millions of Americans in the Alzheimer’s Association Memory Walk; now the Alzheimer’s Association is continuing to lead the way with Walk to End Alzheimer’s. Together, we can end Alzheimer’s – the nation’s sixth-leading cause of death. To start or join a team today, visit the Alzheimer’s Association alz.org/walk. To learn more about disease and available resources, call the toll-free Alzheimer’s Association 24/7 Helpline at 800-272-3900.
