U.S. Ice Sports Complex

And St. Louis Curling Club Bring Olympic Sport to Area

The very first opportunity to learn the exciting Olympic sport of curling is now right here at the U.S. Ice Sports Complex in Fairview Heights. Every Friday night at 6:45 p.m., the U.S. Ice Sports Complex and the St. Louis Curling Club are offering lessons in stone throwing (delivery), sweeping and most importantly, how to stay standing on the ice. “We are so happy to be able to offer curling now,” said Beth Ricciardi, director of operations at the U.S. Ice Sports Complex. “It’s a sport full of fun and fitness for people of all ages. Curling is perfect for people who want to enjoy an ice sport without the skates.” Ricciardi and her husband, Gary Ricciardi, actually started the Curling Club of Kankakee a few years ago before moving to the area to manage the U.S. Ice Sports Complex. “We are big fans of the sport, obviously, and have been working for three years to build up

enough support to bring it to St. Louis. So we teamed up with the St. Louis Curling Club, purchased the equipment and have already booked ice time!” Around the world, there are 1.5 million “curlers” in 35 nations and there are 135 clubs in the U.S. “Curling is a very social sport," said Nancy Rogers, St. Louis Curling Club President. “We’ll cover the basics during our Friday night lessons and introduce new fans to the sport. You can learn how to play in an hour and then spend the rest of your life perfecting the game.” The class itself is a lot of fun, too. There are 32 “students” in each hour-long lesson with an 8 to 1 student/teacher ratio. Cost for the lesson is only $25 and $15 to play in a game thereafter: a perfect Christmas gift, too!

“We are just so excited to add curling to all of our other activities at the U.S. Ice Sports Complex,” Ricciardi said. “There is really something here for everyone.” Offering a varied program schedule and having staff members available at all times, anyone can enjoy the facility. “There is someone here to help from choosing the right size skate to stepping on the ice,” she said. The complex has plenty of free skate time, programs, hockey leagues, figure skating clubs, Broomball and now curling. Need a new idea for a company holiday party or birthday party? Consider booking ice time for something unique.

Alfonzo’s Pizzeria

Specializes In Authentic Italian

Family Photograph of Nonno (Grandpa) Gino and Great uncle Alfred, the inspiration behind the name Alfonzo's. Taken in Bel Fiora, Italy, 1950-51.

The aroma of Alfonzo’s Pizzeria has been beckoning diners in Maryville for 30 years now. Masterful pizza pie creations, delicious homemade pastas and salads … just thinking about it makes your mouth water. Chances are guests will be greeted by Mike Paolucci himself – the founder and owner of Alfonzo’s. He has many fans both personally and professionally with customers coming for miles around for his authentic Italian food. There's a great deal of truth to the bittersweet observation that “overnight success” often is years in the making. This certainly is true for Paolucci whose Neopolitan-style pizza and other Italian specialties are well-known. Paolucci, a third-generation Italian-American, has “put in his time” in the food service industry. As a youngster he washed dishes; in the Air Force he received invaluable food-service training and helped establish an awardwinning kitchen. He then graduated

from the Culinary Institute of America; gained experience with a three-star restaurant; and tenured with Marriot Hotel Corporation, where he served as a sous chef.

In addition, half-baked pizzas can be purchased, taken home and baked when ready. Just preheat the oven to 450 and bake for 5 to 8 minutes.

When he opened his own restaurant, he applied the same painstaking dedication to developing flawless recipes, perfecting the ultimate product and building a family restaurant with the reputation for serving quality food - in satisfying portions - at affordable prices.

Alfonzo’s Pizzeria is located at #2 Schiber Court in Maryville; (618) 288-5701; www.alfonzospizzeria.com. Hours are 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Thursday; 11 a.m. 11 p.m. Friday and Saturday; noon to 9 p.m. Sunday. Gift certificates available.

“I would also like to say how wonderful my staff is,” Paolucci said. “Most of have been with me for years. We are very fortunate!” Menu items include Alfonzo’s famous pizza which measures 26% larger than other pizza pies. Three sizes are available: huge jumbo (18 inches), half jumbo and a large slice – each pizza is a masterpiece in and of itself. Customers can have any topping they can think of and there are many specialty pizzas like the Avalanche, the Veggie Avalanche, Pizza Margherita, Pizza Meata, Caponata and the low-calorie Bianco. Of course Alfonzo’s has a fantastic salad with their famous house dressing, many appetizers, lunch specials, weekday specials, pasta and sub sandwiches. There is literally something for everyone!

Elegant Holiday Lasagna Blends Seafood, Fresh Herbs And Béchamel Sauce Recently, Marketplace asked Facebook friends to send in their favorite holiday recipe. We received many wonderful dishes, but found Brian Goodall’s the right mixture of unique and delicious plus it’s a complete change from the traditional turkey or standing rib roast (not that there’s anything wrong with those!). Staff members were treated to a luncheon featuring Goodall’s masterpiece. Not a meat lover, he said this is one of his special holiday meals loaded with shrimp, scallops and flounder.

Herbed Seafood Lasagna with Tomato-Cream Sauce: Makes 8 servings “This sumptuous lasagna, with its layering of a richly suave cream sauce, delicate, herb-infused seafood, and a piquant tomato topping, is just about as elegant and festive as any lasagna could be,” according to the cookbook, “The New England Cookbook.”

½ cup dry white wine ¼ teaspoon red pepper flakes ¼ cup thinly sliced scallions 2 tablespoons chopped fresh basil or 1 teaspoon dried 1 tablespoon chopped fresh tarragon or ¾ teaspoon dried ½ teaspoon salt, or to taste ¼ teaspoon black pepper, or to taste 1 teaspoon sugar

For the tomato sauce:

For the filling:

2 tablespoons unsalted butter 2 garlic cloves, minced 6 fresh plum tomatoes, seeded and chopped, or canned plum tomatoes, crushed

2 tablespoons unsalted butter 1 pound bay or sea scallops (if using sea scallops, cut in half) ½ pound shelled and deveined medium shrimp, cut in half ½ cup dry white wine ¾ pound sole or flounder fillets, cut in 1-1/2 inch chunks 1 tablespoon chopped fresh tarragon or 1 teaspoon dried 1 tablespoon chopped fresh thyme or 1 teaspoon dried ½ teaspoon salt, or to taste ½ teaspoon black pepper, or to taste

For the béchamel sauce:

4 tablespoons unsalted butter 4 tablespoons all-purpose flour 2-1/2 cups heavy cream 1 teaspoon salt ½ teaspoon pepper, preferably white 1/8 teaspoon grated nutmeg 1 pound fresh pasta sheets or 12 ounces dried lasagna noodles ½ cup grated Parmesan cheese

Tomato sauce: melt the butter in a large skillet. Add the garlic and cook over medium heat, stirring, for 1 minute. Add the tomatoes, wine and red pepper flakes, bring to a boil and simmer, uncovered, until the tomatoes give off their liquid and the sauce begins to reduce, 7 to 10 minutes. Stir in the scallions, basil, tarragon, salt, pepper, and sugar and simmer for 2 minutes. Set aside until ready to use. Filling: melt the butter in a large skillet. Add the scallops and shrimp and cook over medium heat, stirring frequently, until the shrimp begin to turn pink, about 1 minute. Add the wine, bring to a boil and cook for 1 minute. Add the sole or flounder, along with the tarragon, thyme, salt and pepper, and continue to cook, stirring gently, just until all the seafood is opaque, 3 to 5 minutes. Remove the seafood with a slotted spoon to a bowl, and reserve any liquid remaining in the skillet. BĂŠchamel: melt the butter in a medium-sized saucepan. Add the flour and cook, whisking constantly, for 2 minutes. Whisk in the seafood skillet juices and season with the salt, pepper and nutmeg. Set aside until ready to use.

Pasta: fresh pasta sheets do not need to be cooked before the lasagna is assembled. Cook dried pasta in a large pot of boiling salted water until still slightly firm, 2 to 5 minutes for fresh, about 8 minutes for dried. Drain in a colander and spread the pasta out on paper or linen towels. • Preheat the oven to 375 degrees. Coat a 3-to 4-quart baking dish (such as a 14-by-10-inch lasagna pan) with butter or cooking spray. • Spoon about ½ cup of tomato sauce in the prepared dish, tilting to coat the bottom. Make a layer using one-third of the pasta sheets, then half the seafood mixture, then one-third of the bĂŠchamel, spreading the filling ingredients evenly. Make another similar layer. Then finish with the last third of the pasta and bĂŠchamel. Spread the remaining tomato sauce over the final bĂŠchamel layer and sprinkle with the parmesan cheese. (The casserole can be assembled several hours ahead. Cover with foil and refrigerate.) • Bake the lasagna, uncovered, until the cheese is golden and the filling is bubbly, 35 to 40 minutes. If the lasagna has been refrigerated, bake the foil-covered casserole for 20 minutes. Uncover and continue to bake for 20 to 30 minutes, until heated through. • Let the lasagna rest for about 15 minutes before cutting into squares.

Cycling: A Life-Long Sport That Offers Fun & Fitness

C

ycling is as fun as it is healthy and can be enjoyed by people of all ages.A low-impact workout, it goes a long way to ensuring overall fitness. In fact, cycling proves to be an excellent workout that is very effective at boosting your metabolism.

considered by many the best gift for kids at Christmas.“But there aren’t quite as many kids into bikes today as when I first got into the business,” said Norrington. “Now the focus seems to be game systems and computer games. But for those kids who do get a nice bike they really get into it, they really love it and it’s great for their health.”

The Bike Surgeon,an icon in Southern Illinois cycling for the past 30 years, has been equipping cyclists with everything they need to achieve their goals from their original location in Carbondale and a new location in Shiloh. Knowing the 30-plus year success of the original store in Carbondale would lend notoriety to a second location, co-owners Jon Greenstreet and Chris Norrington partnered with local Tom Jackson to open The Bike Surgeon in Shiloh in July 2009. “We want people to enjoy the freedom and fun that come from the experience of bike riding,” Greenstreet said. “Most folks remember that experience when they were a kid and they really enjoy rekindling that feeling.”

helping to sponsor and, at times, coordinate cycling specific events,” Norrington said. “It’s also important to us to assist in raising ‘share the road’ awareness to help make cycling safer for both cyclists and motorists.” Greenstreet, Norrington, Jackson and all other employees at the shop practice what they preach and offer the same opportunities for their clients. Every Tuesday and Thursday night they offer group rides outside during the warmer months and inside during the winter (from time change to time change) – stationary of course. “During the colder months we’ll have 15 to 40 riders in here with the big screen on showing last year’s tour or something else inspiring,” Greenstreet said. “You can ride as far as you like and you’ll never be left behind. It’s also a really great way to meet other people who are into cycling.”

“There are more retired people coming in for new bikes and accessories now than ever,” he said. “Some customers say, ‘I haven’t been on a bike since I was a little kid,’ and we tell them,‘Remember it’s just like riding a bike – you never forget!’”

“The Bike Surgeon specializes in finding the right product for their customer whether it’s a youngster on their first bike, an elite level rider or someone looking to get back into riding,” Greenstreet said. “And we fit everything to the rider’s needs. First, we start by asking questions like ‘where are you going to ride, is it for exercise or fun’ and we continue from there.”

Of course, who doesn’t remember getting their first bike or giving a child their first bike? It’s still

“We also reach into the local community supporting local and regional cycling clubs and groups,

The Bike Surgeon is looking forward to a 2,000-square-foot expansion in early 2011 including additions to their bike offerings and new product offerings for the outdoor enthusiast including hiking boots, technical clothing, backpacks and additional outdoor gear. Surprisingly, bigger waists carry a greater risk of death even for people whose weight is “normal” by the body mass index, or BMI, a standard measure based on weight and height.

Liposculpture Body sculpturing by liposculpture permanently removes localized areas of inherited fat cells difficult to eliminate by exercise or diet. The procedure itself involves the use of small stainless steel tubes the size of a thick wire connected to powerful suction which is a much safer procedure than tra ditional liposuction to remove unwanted fat, resulting in improved body contour.

Holiday Makeover! New Color And A Trim Is Just Enough For Working Mom

W

ith the holidays fast approaching, Melanie Reed thought now was the perfect time for a new look – nothing drastic, just a little change with a touch of sassy! Enter Tommy Z’s Salon and Spa in Belleville with a fresh color and style, and soft makeup for day wear. As an account executive with Trans World Systems and a busy mom of two, Reed wanted to accentuate her olive skin tone with a darker hair color and was clear that she wanted to keep her long tresses long! “Melanie is like most women who reflect their emotions through their hair styles,” said Caitlin Miles, stylist. “And she has been working hard to grow her hair out to show her self confidence.”

For a light foundation, she used a loose mineral powder that doesn’t streak or become shiny. Instead of a black or brown eyeliner, Marcotte applied a dark green to highlight Reed’s eyes. She then brushed on Golden Girl eye shadow on the lid, Brown Sugar on the outer lid and topped it off with a combination of candlelight/willow/ dill to complement the eye color. Then she blended in Sherry cheek color across the cheekbone and topped it all off with a plum lip liner and Vineyard lipstick.

“We also do waxing, body and facial treatments, airbrush tanning and massage at the spa,” Marcotte said. Wedding parties, special occasions and proms are welcome at the salon and spa, too. For a fresh look this holiday season, call Tommy Z’s at (618) 234-4014 (salon) or (618) 235-8580 (spa). The salon is located at 1838 Muren Blvd. (Highway 161) in east Belleville. www.tommyzs.com.

“I want my hair all the down to my waist,” Reed said. “I’ve been taking good care of it with protein treatments to make sure it’s healthy and shiny – I also get it trimmed every four to six weeks.” What the two decided was to apply an all over golden brown with a hint of red for an up-to-date change. Having bangs already, Miles thought a nice look would be to sweep the bangs to the side, add a little texture and then frame the hair around Reed’s face for some additional interest. After the color treatment and cut, Miles took a barrel curling iron and made long, gorgeous curls all the way down. The end result was stunning – “I love it!” Reed said. Next, Margo Marcotte, licensed aesthetician at Tommy Z’s used a toner, moisturizer and foundation primer from Bioelements. Before applying Mira Bella mineral makeup, Marcotte applied false eyelashes which Reed has been wearing for eight years now. “We also offer semi-permanent false eyelashes that last four to six weeks,” Marcotte said. “It’s really like acrylic nails and saves tons of time.”

foundation frustrations? Find The Right One For You

W

hen it comes to choosing the correct foundation for your skin type, most women feel they need to have a Ph.D in astrophysics to fully understand which is best, when and why.

“I have always said that the foundation only looks as good as the skin underneath,” Eihausen said. “First use the cleanser and toner, and then the Brilliant-C Brightening Serum which is packed with peptides for a brighter, healthier glow.”

“I have always had a hard time finding the right foundation,” Laura Brennan said. “It’s difficult to know when you go to the store what is going to work because you can’t really tell what the color is…I’ve wasted a lot of money on the wrong foundations!”

“I decided to do this interview because I wanted to share my story with others who are as frustrated as I was before meeting Nancy,” Brennan said. “And I think it’s very important to shop at independently owned business because they are the kind of people who care about what they’re doing.”

Having been a fan of the famous Merle Norman facials as a kid and always looking to support local business owners rather than “the big boxes,” she decided to stop in Nancy Eihausen’s studio this past summer and “my search for the perfect foundation ended!” “Nancy found the right color quickly,” she said. The Luxiva Lasting Foundation (18 colors to choose from) with SPF 12 stays put for over seven hours and dries to a matte finish that resists fading and smudging. It is also formulated with Pro-Retinol to help minimize the appearance of fine lines and contains Vitamin C and E derivatives. Not only is she a fan of the foundation, but now uses the foundation primer, cleanser and toner from the anti-aging Luxiva line. “I feel like there has been a major improvement in the texture of my skin and makeup goes on much better.”

“And it feels like velvet!” said Brennan. The Luxiva Brilliant-C Brightening Serum is a highly concentrated anti-aging serum that improves skin clarity and helps diminish the appearance of spots and discoloration. Vitamin C and peptides also help to improve the look of fine lines.

Contact Nancy Eihausen for your complimentary personal consultation: 525 Lincoln Highway (across from Schnucks) in Fairview Heights; (618) 624-3223.

Contact Nancy Eihausen for a complimentary personal consultation.

Brennan also enjoys the monthly free facials which Eihausen offers every customer: “My skin feels so good after a facial,” she said. “And of course, it’s always a pleasure to work with Nancy. She’s not a ‘salesperson’ per se. But really takes the time to help figure out what’s best for your skin and budget.” Marketplace Magazine

Hair Salon Offers Boutique Shopping In A Festive Atmosphere A long-time anchor in O’Fallon’s Southview Plaza, Nirvana Hair Salon is a full-service salon for women, men and kids. Nirvana specializes in hair design, foil highlights, color, hair extensions, waxing, manicures, pedicures and ear candling. Stylishly appointed in warm colors, Nirvana is a welcoming haven with a friendly staff of seven who are prepared to pamper. Having been in business for 30 years, the salon celebrated this summer with a party. In addition, founder and original owner Jan Meehan, now working as a stylist, has passed the baton to her former co-worker and good friend Beverly Kunsemiller. “It’s just been a wonderful transition and Jan has been a great mentor – I have so much respect for her. I’m so glad she didn’t retire completely! We’re a good team,” Kunsemiller said. Other team members are Judy Rataj, Debbie Menzel, Lyndsey Aude, Donna McCarty and Monica Allison.

The salon also features a terrific gift boutique that Kunsemiller keeps well stocked with gorgeous, affordable jewelry, hair accessories, scarves, purses and wallets, and an assortment of “fun” items perfect for that special lady. “The retail part of the salon has a vintage-y feel,” she said. “We have a nice selection of jewelry especially – and it’s very reasonably priced so you can afford to pick up a piece here and there for a special outfit or gift.” Always decked out for the holidays, the staff looks forward to clients and shoppers visiting the salon to take in the seasonal décor. “The holidays are so much fun here,” she said. “It’s a great tradition for us to offer our clients – and walk-ins – such a festive experience.”

Nirvana has a wide selection of skin care products, too, by Refinee, an all-natural botanical line. “With the purchase of the starter kit for $45, clients receive a free facial!” The facial alone is a $50 value. Never wanting to fall behind design trends, Kunsemiller said it’s important to always refresh the salon’s décor. In fact, “every five or six years we remodel.” And now, clients can enjoy Wi-Fi service. The salon is always happy to accommodate walk-ins, too. “We have a large clientele of course, but love to have new clients any time,” she said. Visit the salon at 500 Southview Plaza for a new “do” and to browse the boutique. For more information, call (618) 632-8684; www.nirvanahairsalon.net. Hours are 9 am. To 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday; 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday; and 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday. Gift certificates are available.

Holiday Decorating Tips From An Expert

L

ocal interior designer Kay Kendall provided some great ideas for Christmas decorating on a budget. “With a sluggish economy, it’s time to regroup, rethink and recreate new ideas using your existing or recycled holiday decorations,” she said. “Go green!”

Also, have fun with various sizes and scales of ornaments and decorations sitting about the house. “Different sizes keeps things interesting and please don't fill every corner, nook and cranny with Christmas décor,” she said. “Less is always more!”

First of all, “Make a plan! Before you drag everything out of storage, it's helpful if you decide on a theme,” Kendall said. A few ideas to consider: • Toyland • Old Fashioned • Rustic • Santa • Country • Victorian • Patriotic • Modern or Eclectic Mix • Artsy or whimsical Secondly, keep it simple. “Don't overwhelm yourself by trying to use everything you have or driving all over in search of the perfect items,” Kendall said. “Pick your favorite items for your theme and add some bold color combinations (this is great for the colored glass tree bulbs).”

Areas of the house that make the biggest impact for your holiday décor: • Entry Door and Porch • Tree – any size pine tree or use a large houseplant! • Fireplace Mantle • Dining Room Table • Windows Finally, “decorating should be fun,” Kendall said. “Embellish some of your existing ornaments such as glass bulbs and wreaths. Kids love to help decorate with glitter, jewels, ribbons, photos, clay pots, candies and cookies. Let them take past or existing holiday cards and make ornaments or wall hangings out of them.”

Decide what you are going to use and if there are items in your collection that you haven’t used lately, donate to a shelter or service organization where they can give another family great joy. Or, keep half of your collection and donate the other: “It feels good!”

For more ideas and tips from Kay Kendall Interior Design, call 618-5676008; email Kay.Kendallinteriors@ norcom2000.com. Her design services include residential, commercial, healthcare, institutional, marine and aircraft.

Just In Time For The Holidays!

New Cabinets And Countertops In One Day

A

n updated kitchen is the number one favorite remodeling project for homeowners today. Those who employ the use of multiple contractors for a kitchen remodeling project might be in for a costly, lengthy remodel that is sure to drain their patience. There might be one contractor for the countertops, another for the backsplash and a third for the cabinets, each with different timelines and separate bills to keep organized. This can inconvenience your family for weeks or even months - leaving you without a kitchen, and with a house full of dust. Thankfully, there is a better option. There are companies that specialize in kitchen makeovers, and can give your kitchen new countertops, cabinets and backsplashes in just a few short days. The best part is they can execute your entire remodel without any tear-out or demolition. This means your house will never be filled with dust, and you won’t be filling the landfills with your old countertops and kitchen cabinets. This is possible through countertop and cabinet refacing - an innovative and green approach to remodeling that can cut costs and give you a fabulous new kitchen in no time at all! Kitchen cabinet and countertop refacing is one of the most popular new trends in home remodeling. Cabinet refacing is just how it sounds: the new cabinet face is adhered directly to the existing cabinet. This approach to remodeling is extremely green since it eliminates the waste from demolition. It also saves

homeowners a huge amount of ti me and hassles, making remodeling a fast, fun and affordable experience homeowners have no reason to put off. Countertop refacing is the same principle: a beautiful slab of granite or recycled glass can be measured and cut to fit snugly over your existing countertops. Covering your old tile, laminate, butcher block, brick or marble countertops is a quick way to give your kitchen a modern new look. Each beautiful slab is manufactured in 4-foot-by-10-foot sections, yet it is only 1â „4-inch thick, making it extremely lightweight. These slabs have superior heat-, scratch-, stain-, and bacteria-resistant surfaces, and are backed by a lifetime warranty. Available in a wide array of colors, all homeowners can find the perfect match for their existing decor or use their new countertop as a catalyst for a fresh new color scheme. These surfaces can also be installed for shower walls and bathtub surrounds due to their non-porous, maintenance free qualities. Matching granite or beautiful Italian glass mosaic tile backsplashes can be installed over your existing ones in this same fashion. For more information on kitchen and bathroom remodeling, contact Granite Transformations at 636-728-1100; or visit one of two locations at 1750 Fenpark Drive in Fenton, MO, 63036 or 17409 Chesterfield Airport Road, Chesterfield MO, 63005 www.granitetransformations.com. Dr. Energy Saver Offers Free Book And Audit To Determine Your Home’s Efficiency Home energy conservation involves a lot of decisions, and it's not easy to figure out what improvements are necessary. In fact, a building's energy performance involves numerous systems that interact. For example, air-sealing an attic and adding attic insulation will reduce the demand on the HVAC system and even make it possible for a smaller HVAC system to keep the home comfortable. When leaky ducts are repaired, conditioned air is delivered more quickly to living spaces, so less electricity is required to maintain comfortable interior temperatures. “One of the most overlooked areas of the home is the crawl space especially if it’s dirt, said Dave Thompson, marketing director at Woods Basement Systems. “Dirt crawl spaces are never-ending sources of moisture. Even if the dirt’s surface seems dry, digging down a few inches reveals moist earth. Moisture generated in the crawl space can lead to structural damage in your home and a loss of energy, and issues concerning mold. The surest way to decide how to proceed with a home energy conservation plan is to have a complete energy audit done on your house by qualified technicians like the ones who work at Dr. Energy

BEFORE

Saver. A Dr. Energy Saver home energy checkup is very much like a complete physical exam performed by a medical doctor. When this audit is complete, you’ll know exactly how healthy your house is in terms of energy performance, and you'll get recommendations from Dr. Energy Saver about what repairs and improvements should be done, and in what order. To better understand your home’ efficiency, call 866-808-4822 or go online to www.drenergysaver. com/marketplace and choose one of two books for free and schedule your free home energy audit between now and the end of the year.

Power of Carbonation Leaves Carpets Cleaner Longer

T

he secret is out! Old Towne Chem-Dry professional carpet technicians are using the power of Hot Carbonation Extraction for a deep, healthy clean. Millions of microscopic, carbonating cleaning bubbles in the cleaner is called, appropriately, The Natural. The carbonating solutions penetrate deep into the base of the carpet, literally exploding dirt and grime off of the fiber’s surface. Then, hot water extraction is applied to lift the dirty particles to the surface where they are whisked away. This concept is similar to that of using club soda to remove a stain from a shirt. “Due to the natural power of carbonation, Chem-Dry does not have to use excessive amounts of moisture to clean the carpet or upholstered items which means faster drying and carpets are dry in only 1 to 2 hours,” said Sara Gibbons, owner of Old Towne Chem-Dry. “Because the bubbles do the work, Chem-Dry does not use soapy or harsh chemicals. The result? Drier healthier carpets that stay cleaner longer." What’s the Difference Between Steam Cleaning and Chem-Dry? The Chem-Dry process differs drastically from that of steam cleaners, which simply

douse your carpet in buckets of hot, soapy water, then attempt to suck it all back out. While this process does temporarily clean your carpets, it also leaves behind a layer of sticky residue which collects dirt quicker, in addition to leaving moisture at the base of your carpet. This excess moisture causes the carpets to take longer to dry and allows for mold and bacteria to grow. Chem-Dry Is The Greener Carpet Cleaner Conscious consumers don’t add soaps, detergents, phosphates or other harsh chemicals to the air, lakes, streams or forests; so why add them to carpets? Chem-Dry believes in sustainability and has worked toward offering a green solution to carpet cleaning for the past two decades. The Natural cleaning solution is on the FDA’s G.R.A.S. list and only one-fifth the usual amount of water is used during the cleaning process, ensuring a healthier, greener home. Holiday Cleaning Everyone wants to have their home in ‘show ready’ condition for visitors. Now is the time to protect one of your home’s most valuable investments, your carpet. Imagine all the foot traffic and spills that may occur during this upcoming holiday season. Chem-Dry’s Protectant is a protec-

tive coating that helps keep spills, dirt and soil from adhering to the fibers. This provides you an extended window of opportunity to clean up those unexpected spills and stains when accidents happen. You will also see an increased cleaning ability the next time your carpets are cleaned and notice that your carpets are easier to vacuum. The protective coating allows easier removal through vacuuming. Before friends and family visit for the holidays, be sure to invite Old Towne Chem-Dry into your home. The professionals at Old Towne Chem-Dry are all certified, courteous and efficient workers. They have flexible appointment times and provide a satisfaction guarantee. They have been awarded the Gold Seal of Approval from the Carpet and Rug Institute, and have letters of recommendation from major carpet manufacturers. So you can trust Old Towne Chem-Dry to help prolong the life and performance of your carpets and furniture, and help you prepare for the holidays.
