Chocolate Chocolate Chocolate C

elebrating their fifth year of business in Edwardsville, Shiloh and Chesterfield, Chocolate Chocolate Chocolate is proud to be locally owned and more proud to say that their fresh chocolates are made locally, one piece at a time.

As a supporter of small businesses across America, Tyler Tschannen makes his chocolates using Fair Trade Certified and all-natural ingredients. “We want to encourage shopping local not only for a higher quality product, but to help the foundation of the community, which is our local economy,”Tyler Tschannen said. “Because local businesses help grow the economic base of the community, the dollars you spend have a domino effect.” In many ways, that money will eventually find its way back to the customer by funneling into the schools, churches, local non-profit organizations, parks and recreation, and much more. In addition, small towns can survive downturns in the economy with a thriving local business center. Shopping local keeps your neighborhoods safe and beautiful, and stabilizes home values. “From a product perspective, we truly only want the best for our customers,” Tschannen said. “We try to keep current with health trends and concerns, thus many of our chocolates are gluten free. And of course we all know that recent studies have shown a little bit of dark chocolate per day provides natural antioxidants that are good for your heart.” “We are so grateful to our customers,” he continued. “Starting our business was a challenge, but very rewarding, too, and lots of fun. We now have regular customers who come in once a week or so – it’s good to see their friendly faces. Who isn’t happy when they give or receive chocolate?”

Other than the popular retail side of the business, Tschannen has built a solid foundation for corporate business offering a variety of products for employers and employees. In addition, brides and grooms are choosing chocolates as specially crafted table-favors for their guests. A customized chocolate covered fruit and truffle tray is the perfect centerpiece to any shower, birthday or family celebration. Selections are designed in honor of the event with colors and flavors to suit everyone’s taste. Of course, the most popular chocolate holiday of the year is Valentine’s Day. Topping the list of customer favorites are chocolate covered strawberries, white and dark chocolate raspberry truffles, and milk chocolate or white chocolate red velvet cake truffles. “The fruitinspired chocolates are becoming very popular, too,” he said. “We have chocolate-covered pineapple, blackberries and cherries, plus raspberries and strawberries.” “Every morning, we prepare our chocolate-covered fruits fresh,” Tschannen said. “In fact, we can create an order in as little as 30 minutes. Last minute custom orders on Valentine’s Day are challenging, so come visit us in advance for your custom order. Of course we will have a large selection of boxed and specialty chocolates for you to design your own special Valentine even for our last minute customers!” Visit the Chocolate Chocolate Chocolate nearest you: 6667 Edwardsville Crossing Drive in Edwardsville inside the Dierbergs, (618) 655-0511, facebook.com/cccedwardsville; or 3960 Green Mount Crossing in Shiloh next to Dierbergs, (618) 624-5350, facebook.com/Chocolate3x; or their newest location in Chesterfield 1743 Clarkson Road, facebook.com/chocolate3com.

Jacob (Jake) and his eldest son, James Jr. (Bud), co-founded the Jacob Co. when the two of them realized that “if we run a home improvement company on two simple principles we can be very successful: First, we have to really ‘care’ for our customers and listen to their wishes and second, we must simply do what we say we are going to do.” Father and son quickly set their plan into motion and became known as the largest wholesale seamless guttering company in the St Louis Metro region running as many as 10 seamless guttering trucks a day. This changed when Bud Jacob decided to leave the company to pursue other interests. He sold his share to his father in 1994 and his younger brother, Scott Jacob, took the reigns as President of Jacob. Scott Jacob had plans of his own and took the company in a different direction. His vision was to change Jacob from the wholesale sub-contract side of the industry to the retail side and compete against the larger remodeling companies in the region. This move created a new face for the company and by the year 2000, Jacob had solidified itself as an innovative leader in the home improvement industry with national recognition as an elite remodeler in several product lines.

After the bath division success, the two brothers decided to take another direction. “Growth by acquisition!” They wanted to find and purchase a company that fit the Jacob model of a family atmosphere, longevity, quality of products and reputation with solid financial stability. The perfect fit came along when he met with Tom Chesley of Chesley Fence. In 2013, Scott and Bud Jacob purchased Chesley Fence owned by Tom and Patty Chesley for 47 years – the two still work with Chesley Fence and Deck. The second acquisition in 2015 was an asset purchase of Daech and Bauer Roofing and Remodeling owned by Jim Daech who wanted to pursue his career in accounting. He is now a partner in the new Daech and Bauer Roofing, and he is the Finance Comptroller for all the Jacob Family Enterprises, Inc. companies. Still family owned and operated, CEO Scott Jacob and President/GM Bud Jacob work together with an incredible staff to keep Jacob Family Enterprises, Inc. at the top of the remodeling industry. The Jacob boys are proud of their companies and the outstanding employees who run it.

The company endured a difficult change in 2001 when Jake passed away after a long battle with cancer. He left behind a family business that to this day still believes in the values they started with in 1977. In 2006, Bud came back to Jacob full time. Bud’s return gave his brother, Scott, the time needed to work on growing the company. Scott looked at various products and ideas before finding the right fit and Jacob Showers and Baths was created as a division of Jacob.

Consume Less, Pay Less!

LED Lighting Saves Time and Energy … and Money The benefits of LED lighting have certainly become a frequent topic among business and home owners looking for more efficient thus more affordable lighting than incandescent. “I was visiting Gary Johnson, owner of the ACE Hardware in Bethalto, and noticed that his lighting that used to be fluorescent was just brilliant,” said Mike Grimes, owner of Commercial Energy Consultants (CEC). “He said that he was getting tired of climbing up scaffolding sometimes twice a week to replace ballasts and fluorescent bulbs. Solution: he installed Ballast-Free LED lighting and not only is the lighting much more intense, but he is using less energy thus saving more money on his energy bill!” To date nationally, ACE Hardware has now sold 1 million bulbs and the projection for the future is three-fold. Grimes said CEC is helping Johnson at ACE market Ballast-Free bulbs. It is possible to use LED lighting with existing ballasts, if your ballasts are new. Charlie Kramer of Community Kindness in Belleville is a retired lighting specialist. “I knew the first time Mike demonstrated the bulb that I was going to upgrade. What impressed me is the quality of light with no ballast,” Kramer said. “Anyone who has been around fluorescent bulbs knows the cost is in the ballast.” He invites anyone to stop by his shop and check out his new lights.

Commercial Energy Consultants has two ways to save you money through deregulation and the use of LEDs which are the most up-to-date energy efficient lighting options available today. Home owners can save hundreds of dollars per year! Business owners can save thousands of dollars - per month! - Manufacturing Plants - Homes/Retail - Churches - Warehouses - Schools

Heart Month events are sponsored in conjunction with Scott Credit Union

February Is National Heart Health Month

F

ebruary is a time to recognize the importance of heart health especially as most of the lifestyle factors are those that may have been part of your New Year’s Resolution. If you need a reminder or boost to making changes or need some reinforcement for changes made – consider February as a time to focus on your heart’s health.

The following lifestyle practices can help you keep your blood pressure, cholesterol and sugar normal, which can lower your risk for heart disease and heart attack; • Eating a healthy diet • Maintaining a healthy weight • Getting enough physical activity • Not smoking or using other forms of tobacco • Limiting alcohol use

Healthy Diet

Choose plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables, and fewer processed foods. Eating foods low in saturated fats, trans fat and cholesterol, and high in fiber, can help prevent high cholesterol. Limiting salt (sodium) in your diet can lower your blood pressure. Limiting sugar in your diet can lower blood sugar level to prevent or control diabetes. A good recommendation is to choose items on the perimeter of the grocery store and avoid the items in the middle, which tend to be more processed and laden with extra fats, sugars and preservatives.

Healthy Weight

Consider the approach of greater amount of calories expended than the intake of calories. Be aware of what foods you choose for your body’s energy source and when you have opportunities to move such as parking farther away or taking the stairs. Little steps can make for bigger changes.

The Right Care, Right at Home

®

Services We Provide

Physical Activity

Performing aerobic activities (require our body to take in more oxygen and can be performed without stopping) for 20 to 30 minutes per day can help maintain a healthy weight and lower blood pressure, cholesterol, and sugar levels. Examples of activities are brisk walking, bicycling or dancing. Exercise can also help with stress management as a way to use energy that is made available during the body’s “fight or flight" response when a stressful event occurs.

No Smoking

Nicotine constricts your blood vessels affecting blood pressure and increases workload on the heart while taking in less oxygen; unlike exercise which requires more oxygen and strengthens the heart muscle. If you smoke seek assistance from a medical provider or call Illinois Tobacco Quitline at 866-Quit-Yes or 866-784-8937. Memorial Network also offers classes. This is where being a quitter can win!

We Provide Peace of Mind • Bonded & Insured Caregivers • Available 24 Hours-A-Day • Hospital Discharge Assistance/Transportation

Limited Alcohol

Avoid drinking too much alcohol, which can raise your blood pressure, lower your willpower for healthier food choices and actually contains “empty” calories. Try choosing drinks with less alcohol or adding club soda and a splash of fruit juice. Cheers to your health!

Memorial Network has a variety of programs to support your heart health. For more information, call 618-257-5649 or visit: www.mymemorialnetwork.com/events.

A New Year Brings New Opportunities For Better Health Use Delicious Spices To Replace Sodium In Your Diet

Y

our spice drawer is a treasure chest of zippy, zesty, sweet, savory and spicy flavors. One of the best qualities of herbs and spices is the variety of flavors you can add to foods without adding salt.
Here’s a how-to guide on the flavor profiles of common spices and how to season with them.

Rosemary

Basil

Smoked Paprika

• Tastes somewhat sweet, earthy. • Delicious Pairings: Any Italian food like meatless lasagna or pasta with red sauce; Thai food like a stir fry with lots of veggies and sprinkled with peanuts; fruit like berries, peaches or apricots • Extra Tip: Add dried to dish at least 15 minutes before they are done cooking for full flavor. Add fresh right before serving to avoid flavor loss or wilting.

Curry Powder

• Is a blend of spices usually including coriander, fenugreek, turmeric, cumin and others. • Delicious Pairings: Indian food like lentil potato stew; breakfast veggie and egg scramble; whole grains like brown rice or quinoa with cilantro; and tuna with celery and no-added sugar low-fat yogurt for a delicious sandwich • Extra Tip: Some curry powder can be hot and spicy. If you prefer a milder one (or a hotter one) look up a recipe online and make your own mix from spices in your spice drawer.

Cumin

• Tastes toasty and earthy with a little spice. • Delicious Pairings: Mexican food like black bean salsa or refried beans; fish such as tilapia, especially in fish tacos; and root vegetables • Extra Tip: Cumin is also part of the Indian spice mix garam masala. Delicious when paired with coriander in Mexican or Indian food.

• Tastes woody. • Delicious Pairings: Roasted meats like chicken, pork, lamb or salmon; mushrooms, raw or cooked; whole grain bread; and butternut squash or pumpkin • Extra Tip: Long sticks of fresh rosemary can be used to brush marinades on meat or as a skewer stick for grilled kabobs. • Tastes smoky and woody. • Delicious Pairings: Egg dishes; spice rubs for meats or even tofu; in fruit salsas like mango; and tomato sauce • Extra Tip: Use it to add the smokiness of bacon to any dish without the extra fat or salt.

Thyme

• Tastes earthy. • Delicious Pairings: Any bean dish; blends well with bay leaves, parsley or lemon zest; and roasted vegetables • Extra Tip: Lightly crush dried leaves between your fingers when adding to a dish to release the flavor.

Cinnamon

• Tastes sweet and spicy. • Delicious Pairings: Whole grain muffins, waffles, pancakes or breads; and fruit crisps with oatmeal topping. Greek meat dishes like lamb or beef stew with oregano and onions • Extra Tip: The natural sweetness means you can cut the amount of sugar in some recipes. hat began as a part-time job for Angie Hutchison 30 years ago has become a lifetime career as the custom framer in Belleville. The Framery has been a mainstay in the area and is currently at 6020 W. Main Street “where the action is,” Hutchison said.

“If you are going to trust someone with a piece of your family’s history or something equally as special, why not go to a person with over 30 years experience. I really love family heirlooms and sports memorabilia. In fact, I have a pair of Mike Tyson’s shorts to frame right now,” she said laughing. “I feel like custom framing is becoming a lost art as ‘big box’ stores offer a selection of ready-made frames. But you cannot find unique shapes and sizes unless you seek the help of a custom framer – and that’s where I come in.” With her exceptional creativity and the knowledge of a craftsman, Hutchison can offer all manner of frames, shadow boxes, multiple mat openings, flag cases, etc. because she builds it from scratch in her workshop that is right on the premises. She also enjoys refinishing older and antique frames, and always likes a challenge such as large pieces of art. The most unusual thing she ever framed was a scorpion! “It was fun – we do things like butterflies, coins, team jerseys, and of course, lots of Cardinals and Blues items,” she said. Another part of her business is to help home and business owners with the placement and hanging of their framed art. “It’s something I offer so people don’t have to worry about it themselves,” Hutchison said. “Hanging something on the wall is not easy for some of my customers, but I can do it quickly and efficiently.” The shop itself has many unique features including the gorgeous stained glass door (pictured here) that leads in to her workshop area. “That door is original to the building and I just loved it so much that I created a ‘stage-like’ setting for it with stone façade and stairs,” she said. Visitors can also view the myriad of frame choices and examples of her work in the shop. Please visit The Framery at 6020 W. Main St. in Belleville and call (618) 397-0443 for more information.

What Do You Want 2017 To Be Like? Personally and Professionally? By Teresa Pedigo, Business Coach

I

f you could pull out your shiny new 2017 calendar/planner and schedule a year that was perfect for you, both personally and professionally, what would that look like? Take a minute to dream. You might begin the year with New Year’s Resolutions amid all the excitement and hope for that shiny new calendar. Our intentions are great. Our ambition is strong. But then, something happens with little notice or maybe no notice at all. It’s called LIFE. We get pulled in many different directions at home and at work in order to keep all things moving forward. Until one day, we pull out that “not so shiny anymore” calendar and realize the first quarter of the year has passed us by. Where did it go? What happened to those plans we made? At that point, some will just give up and move on where life takes them. Others will stop and evaluate what has transpired to get back on track for the second quarter. However, what could we do to not perpetuate this annual New Year’s ritual and actually make positive changes in 2017? On January 9, Entrepreneur.com posted a great article titled, “5 Steps to Organizing Your Life and Doing Great

Things This Year,” by Jason Fell, Director of the Entrepreneur Partner Studio. It contained “Tips to get your professional and personal lives in order for a more productive and efficient 2017.” I encourage everyone to read it and determine what tips you could put into affect right away to make 2017 what you want it to be.

What We Offer:

AdviCoach Engagements Include: :: Assistance with Goal Setting :: Revenue and Profit Planning :: Measuring Progress Against Goals :: Marketing Assistance :: Employee Management & Hiring :: Assistance with Selling Your Business

This article spoke to me because most of the 5 tips are ones that I have used or suggested within my own coaching practice: 1. Let it All Go; 2. While you’re at it, say goodbye to paper altogether; 3. Limit distractions; 4. Work smarter, not harder; and 5. Take a risk.

Contact me to schedule a casual meeting to talk about each other’s businesses and see if it makes sense to take coaching for a “test drive” with a no obligation Complementary Coaching Session. tpedigo@advicoach.com or 217-433-6809

We all get comfortable. Change is scary and most often uncomfortable. But if you never take the necessary steps to grow and live that calendar throughout the entire year, you will never know how successful you could be - both personally and professionally. So who’s in with me for a great 2017?
