Flooring Is The Foundation Of Your Home

McCullough’s Has Been Family Owned For 28 Years ers, plus a terrific selection of carpet, ceramic, porcelain, luxury vinyl planks, sheet vinyl and laminate. And just in case a customer needs something today, they can check out the relatively new Outlet Center offering high-quality, low-cost products with immediate availability. “It’s perfect for those DIY'ers!” said owner Tracy McCullough.

F

or 28 years now, McCullough’s Flooring has been assisting both residential and commercial customers with all their flooring needs from sales to installation. The showroom features attractive displays that highlight all the newest products for flooring lines, gorgeous tiles for backsplashes and show-

In addition to the flooring business, the company also offers professional floor cleaning services that leave carpets soft, the texture restored, the colors brightened and thus better able to withstand future soiling. It improves indoor air quality by removing the airborne pollutants that get trapped inside the carpet. “Our cleaning equipment is state-of-the-art and all the heavy equipment stays in the truck meaning nothing enters the home except the operator with a cleaning wand and long hose,” she said. As a family owned and operated business, customers can feel confident that their needs will

be met. In fact, “Our mission has always been to provide the best one-on-one attention, customer service and installation we possibly can,” said McCullough. "Russ realized at an early age, while working with his dad, that professional installation is as important as the materials selected. We are very proud to have such a talented team of employees, some of whom have been with us for 20 years!" While some people might find the process of choosing new flooring rather stressful, the McCullough's find it rewarding to share their knowledge so the customer can make an educated decision. "Really, what sets us a part is our unmatched customer service," she said. "We don't just say we care, we really do and I truly hope that we come across that way. This business is all about making our customers happy." McCullough’s invites customers to look at idea books on Houzz, Facebook and the range of products at www.mcculloughsflooring.com. Skin Restoration After Summer Fun Is Crucial For A Healthier You!

A

s outdoor summer fun activities wind down and the kids are back to school, it’s time to take stock of facial skin damage that has inevitably occurred. Partner with the area’s premier spot for all spa services and aesthetic needs, Ooh La La Spa, Anti-Aging and Wellness, to find the most effective treatment plan. “While your skin should be cared for at all times of the year, it is a good idea to have a thorough examination in early fall to access what should be done to restore glowing, healthy skin,” said Dr. Kristen Jacobs, owner and medical director of Ooh La La, and nationally known Aesthetic Medicine Specialist. Here are a few of Dr. Jacobs favorites to tighten, lighten and even skin tone: Limelight is a non-invasive, skin rejuvenating treatment offering improved skin tone, reduced skin redness and reduction in brown spots on the skin associated with sun damage and skin aging. It is ideal for the face, neck and décolleté (chest), arms and hands. This laser treatment can be customized to a specific skin type and current skin condition. Immediately following treatment, brown spots on the skin will darken and skin may appear slightly red or pink. This usually lasts for a few hours and, in some cases, may take up to two days to fully return to normal. Treatments are quick and can be done over a single lunch hour! Microneedling The Eclipse MicroPen creates tiny, painless punctures in the skin that trigger the body’s natural healing process. In response to these superficial wounds, the body increases the production of collagen, the building block of healthy skin. Cell turnover following a collagen induction therapy procedure produces younger skin free from dark spots and discoloration. Chemical Peels are a great way to refresh the skin and improve skin’s tone and texture. Chemical peels gently exfoliate the skin helping with superficial lines on the face, shallow scarring and improving the appearance of pigmentation on the

skin. It is a great way to achieve a fresh, healthy glow. Some redness or pinkness may occur, but usually goes away within a few hours after treatment. Secret RF: The latest wrinkle revolution on the market, Secret RF is an enhanced microneedling treatment only available in physician's offices; it delivers fractional radio frequency (RF) energy into the body. RF energy creates controlled damage in the skin, causing the body to respond by healing itself through the rebuilding of natural collagen levels. This skin revitalization treatment requires little to no downtime and delivers beautiful results which include skin tightening, improvement of fine lines and wrinkles, and textural improvements of not only the eye area, but of the entire face, neck, chest and body. HydraFacial can improve a number of common skin concerns including age spots and hyperpigmentation, fine lines and wrinkles, dull dry and dehydrated skin, oily, congested skin and acne. There is absolutely no downtime with this treatment and you leave the spa feeling hydrated and refreshed. “The goal is to develop relationships with our patients to become a partner in their appearance - we treat every one like our family,” Dr. Jacobs said, “so they can put their best face forward.”

August Is National Children’s Vision And Learning Month • frequent loss of place while reading • complains words move on the page • short attention span • smart in everything but school • labeled ADD, ADHD, dyslexic • working below potential Any one of the above symptoms is a sign that you need to schedule a vision exam with a developmental optometrist. A Developmental Vision Evaluation is needed to test all of the visual skills critical to reading and learning: eye movement control, focusing near to far, sustaining clear focus, eye teaming ability, depth perception, visual motor integration, visual memory and visual perceptual skills.

A

s children are headed back to school it’s time to take a moment to review how vision problems can interfere with a child’s ability to read and learn. One out of four children struggle with reading and learning because of undiagnosed vision problems: “60 percent of kids with learning disabilities have undiagnosed vision problems,” according to a conservative estimate from the American Optometric Association. Too often parents assume that if a child passes a vision screening then everything is fine with their eyes, and that couldn’t be further from the truth. Being able to see things clearly far away is no guarantee that a child can see things up close. In order to read, children not only have to see the letters clearly, but they have to be able to move their eyes easily from left to right (tracking) and be able to see for a long period of time. August is National Children’s Vision and Learning month to help bring attention to the critical role vision plays in a child’s education. Therefore it is vital that parents and educators know the signs that indicate that vision may be playing a role in their child’s difficulties: • headaches when reading • slow or incomplete copy work from board or paper • avoidance of reading • poor reading comprehension

According to Dr. Thomas Unger of Troy, “The good news is that unlike other disabilities, the majority of vision based learning problems can be fixed.” For more information on the critical link between vision and learning, Dr. Unger can be contacted at (618) 667-2020 or visit his web site at www.ungereyecare.com.

From STRUGGLING...To SUCCESS! 1 out of 4 children struggle with reading and learning because of undiagnosed vision problems.

Does Your Child... • Dislike reading? • Skip or reread lines? • Prefer to be read to? • Lose place when reading?

• Have trouble remembering what has been read? • Have difficulty paying attention? ADD/ADHD?

• Make numbers/letter reversals? • Have reading /homework take longer than it should?

ELIMINATE DOUBT! If your child has any of the above symptoms, he or she may have a 100%

correctable vision-based learning problem. Children who once struggled go from failure to success when these vision problems are treated. Call us today to schedule a Developmental Vision Evaluation.

ewly opened and ready for visitors is the showroom of Sage Kitchen Design in Glen Carbon. Cathy Tate-Sage, owner, is no stranger to the area and is one of the most sought-after designers for kitchens, baths...really every room in the house.

navigate the space thus we can provide a unique remodeling experience. While we serve Edwardsville/Glen Carbon and other cities in the surrounding area, I’ve also done work from Ohio all the way to Key West as I have worked on the first, second and now third homes for my clients.”

“Sage Kitchen Design began in 2015 as more of a boutique,”she said.“Now we are a full design service with a brand new showroom! We just completed a project where we touched every room.”

While custom cabinetry is a specialty of Sage Kitchen Design, they offer in-stock/semi-stock cabinets and the option of custom Dura-Supreme Cabinetry, an affordable yet luxurious line. “Customers love Dura-Supreme’s custom cabinetry for the allwood construction (an up-charge in most other cabinet lines at this price point!) as well as the many unique organization and interior storage options” such as the custom K-cup coffee drawer organizer or the interior pot rack for your drawer! Even LED lighting for drawers and cabinets is available.

Prior to forming her own firm, she was the lead designer with two other Madison County kitchen and bath companies thus she knows the territory very well, and has become the “go-to” design talent for all interior design needs. She is additionally educated in ADA compliant design under the Kitchen and Bath Design/Aging in Place specialist, Mary Jo Peterson. TateSage believes in constantly growing her design and product knowledge base via continuing education opportunities. She understands that to create something exceptional, she needs to know what is happening in the industry. “Our design concept is affordable luxury,” she said. “From concept to completion, this process is about you; and we understand you lead a busy life, so we created our business to work in this way. For starters, we meet with you in person, at your location, so that we may experience how you live and

Sage Kitchen Design also employs Devon Sheprow who has a college degree in interior design. “Devon is a certified kitchen and bath designer as well as interior design - not just a decorator,” Tate-Sage said. “We both invite the public to visit either by appointment or drop in and see all of our unique and beautiful displays. 25 years in the design industry has provided me with a recognition of the value that I, and others like myself, can bring to you as the client who has a million other challenges in your day besides a design project in your home. It was many years before I understood the honor and satisfaction that could be achieved by sharing accumulated experiences, trusted resources and dependable custom products with clients to help them solve their design challenges. My secret goal and favorite client comment after an initial meeting is a relaxed, "You made this so easy for me." That is what a good "Partner in Design" (PID) should do. Are you Overwhelmed? Having done your research online, in stores and with friends and family, do you now find yourself frozen and unable to make a decision? A PID will help you identify the important work that is to be accomplished by looking at the product for which you are shopping: Specific Functions? Budget Restrictions? Specific Aesthetic Qualities or Goals? A PID can ask the appropriate questions to help you easily weed out the best solutions from a mountain of possibilities if you trust yourself, and them, and answer their questions regarding these areas thoughtfully and honestly.

Are you Timid? Fainthearted or downright frightened to make a design decision in your home? Thousands of people each year spend hard earned money for results that they don't like and have regret for the next 15 years. If you trust a good PID, they will help you identify your evolving design tastes and put you on track to move in your new "right" direction. It is common to see a client attempt a switch from a decades old design aesthetic to a completely new one by themselves, but they get nervous and make "safe" decisions that hearken back to days gone by only to regret them. A good PID can help you evolve with the protection of someone in design who has executed the transformations you are working to achieve. Pictures are a timid shopper's best friend to help your PID help you. Are you Time Deprived? Do you find weeks and months are flying by, and you still have not made the time to move forward on a design project? Many PID's offer complimentary or low-cost In-Home consultations. Give yourself an hour each week and take advantage of these opportunities until you find the right PID with strong reviews that you trust and feel energized to work with. A concise and thorough conversation with the right PID can get sampling, proposals and budget figures moving forward while you keep moving forward with life. Budget Constraints? The Short-Term Homeowner? Involved in a Real-Life Battle of the Sexes? A good PID has your back and can get you through the challenges that prevent you from successfully executing the design goals in your life.

Cracking Up Is Great For The Soul, But NOT For Your Home

L

aughter can be good medicine and a hearty laugh each day is helpful to overall wellness. However, if there is concern about a basement foundation crack, well, that’s no laughing matter. Late summer is a good time to really take a look around the perimeter of the home and notice any cracks that may appear in the brickwork outside, which, over time and not addressed, will cause tears on the walls inside, too. A sign of a foundation problem inside the home is when the drywall shows irregular cracks usually diagonally off the corners of windows and doors thus causing them to not work easily because the structure has shifted. In extreme cases, gaps may occur above interior doors. To help prevent these foundation problems, homeowners should manage the drainage around the home. And, continue to take note year after year as drainage can shift over time. Say a neighbor changes the drainage around their home and guess what? That water starts flowing next door. Home improvement projects will redirect water and cause it to flow differently as well. Things like the addition of a swimming pool; a patio with a fire pit; a room addition; or new landscaping beds can wreak havoc for drainage if not properly attended to in the first place. Also, take note of the gutters and downspouts: If they become clogged where does that overflowing water go?

Other problems that may occur is when the soil around the house liquefies and may go deep enough causing the foundation wall to drop. Seasonally, the clay in the soil may also push inward when too much water lingers around the perimeter of the home. A block foundation will bow inward mainly in the middle and a poured foundation wall will tip in from the top. Typically, if there is an issue, block foundations will have a crack running left to right across the center of the wall while poured foundations will have at least two diagonal cracks that break and are off set from side to side as the center of the wall tips inward. In extreme weather conditions like the Metro East has seen so far this year, even the best drainage around a home may have too much water, too fast, for too many weeks. Rainfall like this is not caught by the roof and gutters, and does not have enough time to drain away. Crawl Space Solutions From Woods Basement Systems

T

he home is a system and every part of that system plays a role that affects the rest of the structure. If its crawl space begins to rot, grow mold or experience structural problems, this will extend to every part of the home’s system.

Get a FREE Quote!

Symptoms of Crawl Space Problems: • Drywall Cracks in the Interior • Uneven Floors • Foul Odors in the Home • Heightened Allergies or Asthma Symptoms Typical crawl spaces are moldy, foul-smelling spaces that homeowners avoid at all costs. Many of them flood, and they're often filled with debris left over from when the house was constructed. In more extreme cases, they can be rotting structures with rodents, animals and other pests living within. Crawl space repair will help avoid other unnecessary repairs, create a healthier living space and save money on utility bills. Heavy-duty moisture barriers used in the encapsulation process transforms the crawl space into a dry, clean, energy-efficient part of the house giving the homeowner valuable storage space.

Crawl Space Structural Repairs

SmartJack® supports solve sagging floor problems in crawl spaces by stabilizing and leveling sagging beams. Because it's built directly underneath the home, the crawl space plays a key role in a home's structural integrity. Crawl spaces bear this weight through the foundation walls and crawl space support columns.

However, many crawl spaces are designed with a support system that is either inadequate, rotting or has soils underneath the support posts that cannot bear the home’s weight. In many cases, a failing crawl space structure can be resolved by installing crawl space supports. This is a fast job that can provide permanent, warrantied results. Typical installations can be completed in two days or less.

Crawl Space Thermal Insulation

Thanks to special features that other rigid foam panels lack, SilverGlo™ insulation provides excellent performance and value when used to insulate the crawl space and basement walls. A second option is using spray foam to air seal and insulate the rim joist. Crawl space insulation is important as a number of comfort and energy problems are caused by inadequate or incorrect crawl space insulation. Any crawl space can be wet and damp, so the insulation must hold up in those conditions. Woods Basement Systems recommends installing a vapor barrier along with proper insulation to prevent mold and moisture problems, and to keep the home comfortable year-round. Encapsulation is a Building Science method that will help control mold and make rooms more comfortable year-round. Learn more with this free book, “Crawl Space Science,” with every free estimate from Woods Basement Systems. Amy Kaiser Celebrates Her 25th Season As

The St. Louis Symphony Chorus Director

C

elebrating her 25th season as Director of the St. Louis Symphony Chorus, Amy Kaiser is well-known as one of the nation’s most prominent choral conductors. The Chorus has been an intrinsic part of the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra since its founding in 1976. Quickly rising to national fame under the direction of founder Jerzy Semkow and its first director Thomas Peck, Kaiser is only the second conductor in these 43 years. While it’s hard to summarize her storied career, she sees it as a satisfying, yet complicated, maze of different positions because “conducting of any kind, whether professionally or otherwise, is a highly competitive field and not necessarily a great way to make a living,” she laughed. However, “if there’s something you love to do, then do it. You gather all the details of how to proceed then find work experience.” Of course, “working in schools and churches has always been the traditional path for choral conducting - and those are wonderful and very important - but if you want to work with a professional orchestra or chorus then it can be much more difficult,” Kaiser said. Attending Smith College, she was able to meet and study with Iva Dee Hiatt, a pioneer in the field of conducting. “She built a wonderful program and was the mentor of many students including myself.” Kaiser continued her education as a Fulbright Fellow at Oxford University and holds a degree in musicology from Columbia University. “Musicology is an academic specialty in the history of music - just fascinating - and it really helps a choral conductor to have that scholarly background,” Kaiser said. From there she received her first job back at her alma mater - Smith College. “This was a terrific opportunity and the perfect niche for me. I was making music with people who wanted to be there - connecting words and music is very meaningful to me.” She also holds the Smith College Medal for outstanding professional achievement. Juggling many jobs that moved from academia on the faculty of Stony Brook University, Manhattan School of Music and The Mannes College of Music, to freelance choral, orchestral and opera conducting, she realized during the women’s movement of the 1970s that it was possible to be a full-time choral conductor in a world that was previously male dominated. She has been a guest conductor at the

Berkshire Choral Festival, Berkshire Opera, Chicago’s Grant Park Festival and the Metropolitan Opera Guild as well as Music Director of The Dessoff Choirs and conductor of a chamber chorus, community orchestra and opera at the 92nd St. Y in New York. “All these things were great in my 30s and 40s, but I knew I needed a ‘real job,’” she laughed. “I found some interesting opportunities all over the country and luckily ended up here in St. Louis, and I cannot believe how these 25 years have flown by. First of all, I was so thrilled to get this job. To audition, I came to St. Louis to prepare Bach’s Mass in B Minor with Leonard Slatkin who hired me! It was his last year and then working with Hans Vonk, David Robertson and now Stéphane Denève plus all the guest conductors through the years - well, it doesn’t get any better than that.” Kaiser has also conducted the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra in Handel’s Messiah, Schubert’s Mass in E flat, Vivaldi’s Gloria, and sacred works by Haydn and Mozart, as well as Young People’s Concerts. “The first thing I remember walking into the stage entrance was immediately feeling at home. I loved the hall instantly. Making this move, I felt like I traded being the head of a ‘B’ team to being a team player with an ‘A’ level organization,” she said. “St. Louis is definitely home now!” Kaiser is a regular pre-concert speaker for the SLSO as well as a popular teacher for the Symphony Lecture Series and Opera Theatre of St. Louis. Her main hobby is tap dancing and she is a regular in classes at COCA. “I love tap dancing - it just puts a smile on your face.” Looking forward to the upcoming season, the Chorus will sing with new Music Director Stéphane Denève in three major works: Mahler’s Symphony No. 2 Resurrection, Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 and Berlioz’ The Damnation of Faust. In addition, Resident Conductor Gemma New will conduct Vaughan Williams’ Dona Nobis Pacem and Masaaki Suzuki will make his debut as Guest Conductor in Mozart’s Mass in C Minor. Chorus members come from all walks of life and all parts of the St. Louis region. With 120 singers, the chorus performs on SLSO subscription concerts and Live at Powell Hall events. Kaiser invites interested singers to audition for the St. Louis Symphony Chorus August 27, 29 and September 3. Please see the chorus page at www.slso.org for audition information and to schedule an audition time, or contact susanp@slso.org. For more information about the St. Louis Symphony Chorus, visit www.slso.org. Left: Stéphane Denève conducts the SLSO and chorus in Prokofiev's Alexander Nevsky, Feb. 2019.

Medical Team Has Been Bringing Smiles To Paraguay for 21 Years

Reading left to right: Hank Oplinger, Wanda Oplinger, Karen Breithaupt, Natalie Kuldell, Keith Breithaupt, Caleb Chu, Philip Chu, Dina Chu, Abby Chu, Lynn Mitchell, Olivia Nicholson, Andy Nicholson, Elizabeth Bhandari, Ashish Bhandari, Miranda Lonski, Scott Ferguson, Hailee Anglin, Joe Gross, Bob Swickard. Not pictured is Blake Hocott.

Every July for 21 years, a group from St. Matthew Methodist Church in Belleville travels to the country of Paraguay to provide medical services, including dental, general medical and eye care, to the underprivileged people of the very rural area where the village of Yrybucua sits on the Eastern side of the country. Traveling there isn’t easy as the team flies into the capital city of Asuncion and then boards buses or vans, with ALL of their baggage, taking them through some rather treacherous terrain, which did not have paved roads until a few years ago. “Imagine packing up thousands of dollars of medical equipment, medicine, dental tools, etc. and transporting it to this third world country?” said team member and St. Matthew Staff Coordinator Scott Ferguson who just completed his 19th trip.

Through the years, “We have developed wonderful relationships with many of the villagers,” he said. “This year we saw a total of 1,113 patients to whom we presented the gospel in addition to helping them medically: 147 villagers made the choice to give their lives to Christ.” Ferguson also noted that they are now well acquainted with young adults who the American medical team delivered 20 years ago! “We bring nurses, doctors and dentists along with a support team. Young people are encouraged to go as well as it’s an experience of a lifetime,” he said. “It truly puts things into perspective with regard to our ‘first-world’ problems.” If anyone is interested in joining the team next year, please contact Keith Breithaupt or Hank Oplinger at (618) 397-5994. Please enjoy the pictures taken this July, 2019.
