Mother’s Day Getaway An unexpected winery getaway is closer than you think
V
on Jakob offers two family-owned wineries, located in Southern Illinois – an easy drive from the Metro East area. Their Alto Pass location has panoramic views of the winery’s orchards and vineyards with a picturesque backdrop of the Shawnee National Forest. Their original location in Pomona provides an intimate atmosphere with a beautiful deck overlooking the vineyards.
Von Jakob has five completely updated Bed and Breakfast suites on the property that come with a wonderful breakfast and customized wine basket full of snacks and treats. Each suite includes a king-size bed, Jacuzzi tub and free wireless Internet. In addition, Von Jakob is a popular setting for celebrations of all types. With their existing Grand Ball Room that is perfect for larger weddings, indoor festivals and other private events, Von Jakob is in the process of constructing their new Brewery Room. This pub-styled room, scheduled to be open mid to late summer, will highlight their brewery and will be used for hosting evening dinners, smaller weddings and other private events. With over 15 years of experience, Von Jakob is excited to offer multiple accommodations for their customers' events. Complimentary consultations are currently available.
Established in 1996, owners Paul and Rhoda Jacobs decided to plant grapes outside their countryside home. Almost two decades later, their grapegrowing efforts have sprouted into a thriving business with over 20 varieties of wine, a brewing company, a Bed and Breakfast and two winery locations. Today, the Jacobs family continues to operate the winery. “We have created a resort-type atmosphere with the additions of the Bed and Breakfast suites – they are perfect for those looking for a vacation close to home. What’s great is that once you’re here you have access to pretty much anything you need for a nice getaway. If you’re looking for beautiful scenery and great food, wine and handcrafted beer, Von Jakob is the place to be, said Josh Jacobs, General Manager of Von Jakob.

Give Your Mom What She “Deserves”For Mother’s Day: The Ultimate Gift of Relaxation, Health and Beauty…
Kristen M Jacobs, M.D., owner of Ooh La La Spa, Anti-Aging, and Wellness, with husband, Dr. Rob Wise and sons.
A wonderful way to express love and gratitude to Mom is with a special gift of TLC from Ooh La La Spa, Anti-Aging, and Wellness Center located in Maryville. They offer an extensive list of services, sure to make any Mom feel loved and special! The owner of Ooh La La, Kristen M. Jacobs, M.D., is the mother of two boys: Jack, 9, and Mikey, 8. She perfectly understands busy schedules with little downtime. Thus, she is the “go-to” physician when it comes to aesthetic care. Her advanced training, extensive knowledge and personal experience with all of the products and services offered at Ooh La La truly set her apart from the rest. Dr. Jacobs is a Board Certified Family Physician dedicated to disease prevention, detection and health promotion. She practices the broadest spectrum of healthcare with a passion for helping people lead a healthy life while feeling beautiful. “I like to use a natural, artistic approach that enhances one’s look without over doing it,” Dr. Jacobs said. “Everyone will notice but no one will know!” She performs all “injectables” like Botox and Dermal Fillers herself as well many of the laser procedures. Extremely “hands on” with all other procedures, she is involved in every patient’s treatment plan and care.
A unique product that Ooh La La has is the state-of-the-art Cutera Laser that will tighten, brighten, glow, smooth, clear, and refresh the skin. It’s extremely versatile and allows the flexibility to customize each treatment to each patient’s skin type and condition.
Laser rejuvenation treatments include: The Pearl is “the one laser treatment to choose” to renew your skin’s surface with quick, visible results. It treats fine lines and wrinkles, scarring, uneven skin texture and sun damage. The Laser Genesis skin rejuvenation therapy is one of the most favorite treatments at Ooh La La. It treats conditions such as excessive redness in rosacea, large pores, uneven texture, acne scarring, and fine lines and wrinkles. The LimeLight Facial treats skin redness, tiny veins, brown spots and sun damage; it offers the advantage of improving skin tone and surface imperfections associated with aging and photodamage. Other laser treatments include Laser Hair Removal and Vein Removal of the face and body.
While “fru fru” is nice, discovering the Fountain of Youth is always the goal. Ooh La La offers a wide variety of results-oriented skin-care services, which can be tailored to one’s skin type for a fresh and youthful glow. A team of nurses and aestheticians work along side Dr. Jacobs, all of which have extensive training in skin rejuvenation treatments like Microdermabrasion, Dermaplaning, Facials, Massage, Microcurrent, as well as more advanced procedures such as Chemical Peels and Laser Treatments.
Ooh La La also offers Latisse for longer and darker lashes, the must-have Clarisonic Skin Cleansing Brush as well as Physician-Grade Skin Care and Makeup lines to enhance all treatments.
For more information or a complimentary consultation, call (618) 288-9117 today! Gift certificates available! The office is located at 2102 Vadalabene Drive in Maryville; OohLaLaWellness.com • Facebook: facebook.com/OohLaLaCenter • Twitter: @OohLaLa_Spa
Ooh La La is excited to announce the addition of Dr. Rob Wise, chiropractic physician (also known as Dr. Jacobs’ husband!). He will fit right in to the holistic approach that Ooh La La takes by offering chiropractic services, acupuncture and nutritional counseling.
While Mom is getting pampered at Ooh La La, she might also be interested in a few other services including health, wellness and weight loss. For example, they offer a comprehensive Medically-Supervised Weight Management Program where great success has been achieved.

merle girls for generations N
ancy Eihausen, the popular owner of the Merle Norman Studio in Fairview Heights, has decided to turn to a new chapter in her life and leave her prized possession in the ever-capable hands of Sabrina Fudge. Nancy will still be on hand as consultant and to visit with her many clients from over the years. Fudge has been the hair and wig stylist at the studio for seven years and is so grateful to have this opportunity. “Nancy wanted to turn things over to somebody she trusts and likes, and I am so flattered by that,” Fudge said. “I want everyone to know that nothing is changing and the studio will be as welcoming as ever. In fact, I hope to have a Grand Re-opening week during the first week of June.”
M E R L E N O R M A N . CO M
In addition, “I come from a long line of Merle Girls,” she said in her sweet southern drawl. “My mom, Jeannie VanWinkle, even considered purchasing a studio of her own at one time and my grandma’s best friend did own her own studio! We wear nothing else but Merle Norman in our family.”
Now, Fudge is excited to have her 22-year-old daughter, Brooklynn McDade, alongside to help promote the fact that Merle Norman is for all ages. “We even have a preventative acne line – Clear Complexion - for young people who need that skin care,” Fudge said. The things people have grown accustomed to will still be in place including “the other” Nancy. “Our extensive wig collection is still here plus all the accessories for women undergoing cancer treatment like the Beaubeaus, Abby Sleep Caps, and more,” she said. And of course, the complimentary monthly hydration facials will be offered as always. “Off your feet and have a seat,” as the saying goes at Merle Norman. The Grand Re-Opening dates are June 1 -9 where guests can come visit and get to know Fudge, register to win gift certificates, “try and buy,” win door prizes and more. The studio is located at 525 Lincoln Highway, Suite 6 (across from Schnucks) in Fairview; (618) 624-3223. “Please visit our Facebook page – Merle Norman Cosmetics Fairview Heights Illinois – and LIKE it!”

Mother And Daughter Work To Provide At-Home Care For Seniors
P
roviding relief to families in need of care for their senior loved ones is why A Living Angel Home Care was established. From the very beginning they have focused on giving the best At-Home Care as an alternative to a nursing home facility.
The philosophy at A Living Angel is to offer the best at-home care by hiring the best people to provide that assistance “Our employees are caring, compassionate and personable,” said Brown’s trusted office manager Michelle Sumnler. “We also look far and wide for people who are kind and compassionate to take care of our seniors.”
Indeed, studies show that most individuals respond better to care provided within the stability of their own home. Each client at A Living Angel has an individualized plan whether they are in need of short- or long-term care.
A Living Angel has 20 to 30 employees depending on how many 24 hour clients are needed at the time. “We need seven caregivers for a 24-hour home,” she said. “Our caregivers also go to a home for the day and are not on a rotational schedule. We want the client to build a trusting relationship with their caregiver.”
“In 2000-2001 I was operating another business, but I was also helping my mom who was working as a caregiver at Charles Gardens in Fairview Heights in a subcontracting capacity. She had so many clients that she had to start hiring help – it really got out of control because so many people trusted my mom – she provides great care,” said Cyndi Brown, owner of A Living Angel Home Care as well as a business consulting firm. “Raising five kids by herself in a very poor environment while working with people who needed her special compassion, you might say my mom has been a caregiver all of her life,” she said. “My mom is so special. She is the original angel! And she still works at least four days a week for A Living Angel at the age of 69.”

Looking for a Special Program to Help Your Child? If you have a child who is struggling with reading or learning, it is important to understand that children usually won’t tell you if they are having trouble seeing the letters on the page. They think everyone sees the same way they do – and they are just the stupid ones who can’t make any sense out of what they are seeing. It is vital that all parents and educators become familiar with the symptoms of vision problems that interfere with learning: • headaches when reading • slow or incomplete copy work from board or paper • avoidance of reading • poor reading comprehension • frequent loss of place while reading • complains words move on the page • short attention span • smart in everything but school • labeled ADD, ADHD, dyslexic • working below potential
According to Dr. Tom Unger of Troy, “When the doctor says your child can see ‘20/20’, that means that he or she is able to see a certain size letter at a distance of 20 feet - but that’s all it means! Vision is a complex process that involves over 20 visual abilities and more than 65 percent of all the pathways to the brain. And, the good news is, once the vision problem is detected, it is usually 1 00% correctable. If we can treat the vision problem over the summer, your child could start the new school year ready to succeed. For more information on the critical link between vision and learning, Dr. Unger can be contacted at (618) 6672020; www.ungereyecare.com.

DogsCampers JustgetWanna Have Fun! exercise and socialization all day long
D
og owners around the world know the guilty feeling of leaving those big brown eyes behind every morning while heading off for the day. Just the thought of that furry member of the family moping around for eight hours or more, and then wanting to play ferociously when you come home pooped, is enough to drive you and your family crazy. A new option is a worry-free, fun place to go during the day where your pup can romp and play to their little heart’s content. Camp Bow Wow Premier Doggy Day and Overnight Camps provide that exciting, safe and upscale environment for dogs to not only be themselves, but receive lots of love and attention. “Our goal is to give your dog exercise and socialization so that when you get home after a long day you can relax and the dog doesn’t get into trouble,” said Camp Ranger Paul Stroh. “Camp Bow Wow offers this doggy day camp for clients wishing to drop their dogs off in the morning and pick them up in the evening, as well as overnight boarding for vacationers and business travelers.” Overnight boarders play in the day camp program during the day and have their own individual cabins at night. Camp Bow Wow offers four large indoor and outdoor play areas covering about 8,000 square feet with play equipment, shade structures, and dog bone pools. Camp Counselors are trained in dog behavior, safety and health management and are there to ensure your pup has a great time. In fact, there are two great ways to check this out for yourself: come take a tour or check out the facilities live via the Camper Cam which shows each area like Benji’s Adventure, Scooby Doo’s Mystery, Lassie’s Rescue, Snoopy’s Dog House, Pluto’s Magic Kingdom and other whimsical names. Also, dogs are separated by size so little dachshunds aren’t run over by Great Danes.
Camp Bow Wow also offers Home Buddies where we will come to your home to take care of your pets. Not all dogs can come to camp, cats are not allowed, and some households have both cats and dogs, so Home Buddies will come to your home for afternoon walks or potty breaks and also take care of your pets when you are on vacation. We also have web cams for your home if you want to check on your pets while you are gone. Stroh invites anyone to tour the spotless facility and see in person all that Camp Bow Wow has to offer. Once you decide to send your pup to camp, there are the usual shot requirements and even an “interview” to test the dog’s temperament. Stroh said not to worry, 95% or more of his camper applications are accepted. “If they don’t pass, we network with other facilities to find the right spot for the dog,” he said. Go to their website to check out the monthly specials and discount packages. Camp Bow Wow is open 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday; 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. and 4 to 7 p.m. Saturday, Sunday and major holidays (no extra fees apply on holiday pick ups). For more information, please visit Camp Bow Wow at 129 Corporate Drive in Swansea (behind Outback Steakhouse on Highway 159) or call (618) 234-9247 (WAGS). Email is Swansea@campbowwow.com; web site is www.campbowwow.com/us/il/swansea. Camp Bow Wow is also trying to spread the word about Rescues. There are thousands of pets that are abandoned, surrendered and abused that need good homes. Camp Bow Wow holds many fund raisers for area Rescues and Spay/Neuter Groups. In June, Camp Bow Wow will be holding a major fund raiser for Belleville Area Humane Society by bringing a national Dock Dog event to Belleville. Two Long-Time Pet Care Companies Team Up Four Paws Animal Hospital recently unveiled their newly renovated and greatly expanded full-service veterinary medical facility located in O'Fallon on Highway 50. To enhance their business even more, they teamed up with the St. Louis-based Kennelwood to offer expert grooming and training as well. “Our mission is to provide high-quality pet health and wellness services to assist your pet in living a longer, happier and healthier life,” said Dr. James L. Jessen, co-owner of Four Paws which has been in business for 32 years overall and is a AAHA accredited small animal hospital - there are only two in the Metro East. “Clients were requesting information on grooming and training, and what better business to pair with than Kennelwood?” “When approached by Dr. Jessen in 2011, we were very excited about the partnership opportunity,” said Alan Jones, president of Kennelwood Pet Resorts. “We were so impressed with the entire staff at Four Paws and knew it would be a great marriage. Since partnering, clients have enjoyed the convenience of having a Kennelwood location in Illinois. Sales have exceeded expectations and the two staffs complement one another. We are very happy with the entire experience.” Four Paws has five veterinarians and a highly educated staff to offer preventative and wellness care, and for some pets, more specialized care. Together, they seek to provide the best medical, surgical and dental care for their highly valued patients. Services include wellness exams, dental care, surgery, dermatology, rehabilitation, internal medicine (including oncology and chemotherapy), puppy and kitten care, senior dog and cat care, diagnostic services, pharmacy, microchipping and nutritional counseling.
“Our In-store training is great because we create a program to fit everyone’s needs – there are no two dogs alike,” said Sarah Rouse, marketing manager at Kennelwood. “It’s also very helpful for those who are going out of town: we can train your dog during the day and you come by and pick him/her up after work, or you can board him at our first class facilities at night.” They also have private lessons which are completely customized. Any training program you choose will begin with a consultation between you and the trainer to discuss expectations, what the issues are and what kind of time frame. After every session or day, the trainer will give the client information and tips to continue the newly learned behavior at home. The Kennelwood grooming spa has many unique services that have evolved from their almost 40 years of experience. “We are really on the cutting edge of the pet industry and services that can be offered these days,” said Rouse. Some of these are: - Shed-X Treatment and the Shed-X Advantage Club - Healthy Skin and Coat Treatment - Kennelwood Fresh Breath Treatment - Berry Face Scrub Four Paws/Kennelwood is located at 2006 West Highway 50 in O'Fallon; (618) 632-4615. Also, visit both web sites - www.kennelwood.com and www.fourpaws.com - for more information.
Recently, Four Paws purchased a human underwater treadmill to offer an alternative to medication for injured and senior pets. “Pet rehabilitation is still in its infancy so we are in the learning process with this,” Dr. Jessen said. “There are very few practices in the whole St. Louis area trying this approach.” Since opening at Four Paws in July, 2011, Kennelwood has been providing grooming, in-store training with Joe Timmerberg and they are a dealer for Invisible Fence pet containment systems that have outdoor and indoor solutions. American-Made Fencing Products Come In Wide Variety Of Styles,Colors
M
ost people need fencing around their properties for security to protect children and pets from unwanted visitors. Pool owners are required to erect a secure fence also for safety and there are the occasional folks who want privacy from the nutty neighbor next door. Whatever the reason, fencing can be a beautiful addition to the landscape. “Tom’s dad started the company 45 years ago in his home while working at a packing house in East St. Louis,” said Patty Chesley, operations and office manager at Chesley Fence. “In 1985, Tom bought the company from his dad after attending St. Louis College of Pharmacy! He had been working for his dad all those years and decided he would rather continue in the fencing industry than working as a pharmacist.” Once providing commercial fencing too, Chesley has been specializing in residential for the past 10 years offering cedar, aluminum and vinyl in all styles and colors. The Chesleys like to point out that all of their products are American made: the cedar is from Oregon and Washington; vinyl is made in Buffalo; and the aluminum from a company in Philadelphia. In fact, they have been working with Jerith from Philadelphia for over 40 years. Cedar is still the most affordable and is not the maintenance nightmare most people think, Patty Chesley said. “Just stain or paint it in the first year and then redo every three or four years to maintain the cedar color.”
Vinyl is very popular as more and more colors have become available. “It’s not just white and cream anymore,” she said. Now, there are over 20 new colors from which to choose. And you can’t beat the fact that vinyl is maintenance free and has a lifetime warranty. Aluminum fencing with its lifetime warranty is still the most in-demand product offered. “It cannot rust and never has to be repainted,” Tom Chesley said. Aluminum styles come in black, white and bronze. Employees work directly for Chesley and are not subcontractors – always good to know when undergoing a home improvement project. The company also has strong relationships with builders, contractors and pool builders throughout the area. They pride themselves on quality work and materials at competitive pricing. Both Patty and Tom Chesley, who have been married since 1990, are both from Fairview Heights and attended Belleville East. Every day Tom Chesley heads out to the warehouse in New Baden to get each crew loaded up and on their way, and then he spends the day meeting personally with customers. Patty Chesley heads up the office located at 4200 North Illinois Street, Suite E, in Swansea. Having just moved to the 4200 N. Illinois location, the office is newly renovated with a bright atmosphere to show off all of the fencing displays. Hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday; and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday. Chesley also offers free estimates.

New! Baby And Kids’ High-End Furniture Store Opens In Fairview
T
hree years ago, Jodi and Gene Brown set out to find the perfect baby furniture for their upcoming arrival and were disappointed to find that to purchase a high quality, well-built and beautiful product they had to make their purchase in St. Louis rather than right here in the Metro East. Both working at full time jobs - Jodi is a nurse in the operating room of the Veteran’s Affairs Hospital in St. Louis and Gene is the owner of Swift Plumbing – the couple knew that they wanted to open a business for Jodi to run after her retirement from the VA Hospital. They also both felt a passion to provide this niche for Metro East residents. “We then found out that a few of our neighbors were also buying their baby furniture in St. Louis, however, they were not having a very good experience,” Jodi Brown said. “So we talked with Mueller Furniture (Belleville) and got some good advice on running a furniture store which we appreciate.” Night Night Sleep Tight is a charming store with 4,000 square feet designed to showcase as much children and baby furniture, and accessories, as possible including cribs for your newborn baby that “grow with your child” - to the toddler and beyond beds; dressers; nightstands; recliners; and more – all designed to bring your child's rooms to life. Open now for a little more than a month, the store is planning a grand opening soon, said assistant manager Nichole Bernreuter, who is quite knowledgeable on the merchandise and finding exactly what the customer needs. “I couldn’t be happier to have found Nichole,” said Jodi Brown. “She really cares about the business.” Bernreuter enjoys giving a tour of the store’s collections that includes such reputable names as Young America by Stanley Furniture, Munire Furniture, rockers and gliders by Storytime Series, and baby and children’s bedding by Cottontail Designs.
“This furniture is high quality, all wood and very durable,” she said. “It’s a great investment because it lasts through the years.” In addition, Young America by Stanley is American made and comes in a rainbow of colors including pink, purple, green, yellow, orange, etc. Night Night also carries a fantastic selection of matching bedding collections including accessories like blankets, throws, sheets, pillows, wall art and much more. Many of these are on display in the store. One of the must-haves for new parents is The Nap Nanny Chill - a ground-breaking product designed to comfort babies and improve infant sleep. Made with a durable, yet incredibly comfortable high-density foam, the Nap Nanny Chill mimics the contours of a car seat, the softness of a baby blanket and the stability of a mattress. “They are completely washable and I think safer than something like a bouncy seat,” Bernreuter said. Check out the Petunia Pickle Bottom diaper bags in all kinds of stylish designs in a sturdy fabric that is still light enough to easily carry. “We even have a men’s line of diaper bags,” she said. All The World’s A Stage! By Lisa R. Adams Publisher, MM
International Opera Star, Professor And Coach Hails From Granite City “Spectacular…white hot…unforgettable…bravura performance… ravishingly theatrical…on fire” – just a few adjectives from opera theatre critics around the world who were mesmerized by Erie Mills’ theatrical feats and lively coloratura soprano voice. For 25 years she dazzled, humbled and thrilled audiences from her professional debut in Houston, in 1978-79, as Zdenka in Richard Strauss’s “Arabella.” From there, the limit was the sky as she traveled to The Metropolitan Opera in New York City to London, Hamburg and Vienna, stopping along the way in San Francisco, Santa Fe, St. Louis and Cleveland – just to name a few.
see me – and still does – I don’t think we have ever been apart for more than three or four weeks. He loves opera and has stood by me all this time. In fact, he comes from a very musical family so we can talk music which is great because he’s a physicist and we certainly don’t talk about physics!”
For all those opera lovers and enraptured critics who will never forget her passionate performances, they may have seen a glimpse of her personal side, but for those who know her privately she is as genuine as she is captivating, true to her long-time friends and her roots right here in Granite City.
Usually one to put “all my eggs in one basket – I’m not a good mutli-tasker,” she laughed. She retired from the university in 2008 to focus mostly on coaching, though she keeps a small private studio at her home and teaches master’s classes. And at this very minute, all of her friends in the St. Louis area are anxiously awaiting her arrival for the Opera Theatre of St. Louis’ season beginning May 19. She will be the English diction coach for this year’s American Premier of Alice In Wonderland (not the kid-friendly version) and Sweeney Todd.
Always “the life of the party,” Mills’ effervescent personality jazzes up the phone line as she clearly enjoys talking about the things she loves the most: singing, teaching, family and friends. She lives primarily in Pleasanton, Calif., with her husband of 26 years, Dr. Thomas Rescigno, and their two terriers Blondchen and Siegfried (Ziggy). During the time that her singing career “was winding down,” she became associate professor of music at San Jose State University in 1998 (she was a full professor upon retireing in 2008) and retired from singing on stage in 2003 when she also found a niche as an English diction coach for opera companies around the world. In fact, at the time of this writing she was in rehearsals at The Met for the production of “Billy Budd.” “I really loved traveling all over the world while I was singing. Of course I don’t have to be out of town as much any more,” she said. “My husband, Tom, would always come to
“The opera world is kind of like a big family – everywhere you go there are people to help, like pick you up at the airport, take you out for dinner, etc.,” Mills said. “So when I go somewhere I am always looking forward to seeing some good friends.”
In her ninth year as a diction coach for the OTSL, she said she loves getting back here to visit her good Belleville friends and recently, “I’ve been getting together with some of my friends from Granite City. The OTSL is really where I ‘grew up’ singing with the company back in 1978! I really look forward to this time of year and working with this company - I really like Timothy O’Leary, the new director,” she said. “St. Louis is an internationally known festival based on the Santa Fe model,” Mills said. “We have critics and visitors from all over the world, and the actual experience of attending a production there is so wonderful. Have dinner under the tent before and go back afterward and meet all the members of the cast – you can literally walk right up to them and chat. It’s such a great community spirit. And of course it’s always so nice and humid!”

"Throughout a long role that ends with an enormous solo scene, her singing is beautifully in focus, her tone polished. She accomplishes the ornamentation with ease, and she proves magnificently that vocal bravura can work hand in glove with variety of color and expression,” wrote Paul Griffiths of the New York Times on her performance of Miss Havisham in “Miss Havisham’s Fire.” “Not only does she make the words heard -- a remarkable feat in itself -- she also makes them felt.”
"You can be lucky but you have to be prepared for the luck – then it pays off!" The OTSL has performed many world and American premieres and “what makes it so interesting to attend is the combination of offering the traditional with the new,” she continued. “They are mandate to sing everything in English (with subtitles on a screen above the stage) which I think is great and I hope it doesn’t change! And the intimacy of the theatre is fantastic.”
who looked at my report card and saw no math, no history – it was all music - he said, ‘what am I paying for?’ and I replied ‘I’m a music major dad.’ And he gave me a look that said, ‘you better be the best that you can!’” she laughed. “My parents were so supportive – there was never any looking back. I’ve been lucky, but I was prepared for the luck.”
Growing Up In Granite City
“That’s what I tell young singers today – you make your luck and if you’re prepared for it, it pays off.”
Mills grew up attending the Granite City public schools which offered an outstanding music program including band, chorus, drama, music classes during school hours as well as private lessons. Her father was the superintendent of the Granite City Water Company who also worked nights at Cahokia Downs and Fairmount Race Track. And her mother was a nurse. “Mother always said she didn’t have another child because she had too much indigestion with me,” she laughed, “but really I think as a child of the depression herself she wanted to be able to afford all the best things for me. Both my parents worked hard for that. College was NOT an option – I was going!” So Mills took voice and piano lessons, dance and acting – “everything my mom didn’t get to do. But I think her idea was that I would marry a doctor or lawyer, and be a member of the Opera Guild, etc. Then when I was about 8 years old, someone said, ‘Hey, this kid’s got talent!’” Everything Mills did then, was in preparation for an operatic career. Of course at the time there was no opera in St. Louis except for the Muny Opera which Mills thought “that’s where I’d work.” Which she did for six summers. She went to The College of Wooster for her undergraduate degree and then the University of Illinois for graduate school. “I will never forget standing in the driveway with my dad
Erie Mills’ Biography Soprano Erie Mills is a graduate of the College of Wooster (Ohio) and the University of Illinois. From 1977 to 1979 she trained as a Houston Grand Opera Studio artist, and during the 1978–79 season made her debut in Houston. Since then she has gone on to sing with many of the world’s leading opera companies. A noted coloratura specialist, some of her principal roles are Zerbinetta in Strauss’s "Ariadne auf Naxos" (which she has sung at the Hamburg and Vienna state operas and the English National Opera in London and in Houston and Boston); Rosina in "Il Barbiere di Siviglia" (including at the Metropolitan and New York City operas); Cunegonde in "Candide" (New York City Opera, Cleveland Orchestra, Hollywood Bowl); the title role in "Lucia di Lammermoor" (New York City Opera); and Giunia in Mozart’s "Lucio Silla" (La Scala, Milan). She sang the role of Sin-Cha in Bruce Adolphe’s "Mikhoels the Wise" in its 1982 world premiere at the Ninety-second Street Y in New York. Mills is also active on the concert platform and as a recitalist, and on recordings she can be heard in Sondheim’s "Follies" with the New York Philharmonic and in the New York City Opera production of "Candide" (Grammy award winner). She is currently an English diction specialist at OTSL, the Metropolitan Opera and the Santa Fe Opera.

ow! Once again Belleville's Art on the Square received another #1 ranking by Art Fair Source Book in 2012. This highly regarded art fair publication considered over 600 art shows from the thousands held every year and placed Art on the Square at the very top. Beginning in 2002, Art on the Square quickly established itself as an up and coming new show. In 2004, it was named the Best Small Town Art Fair in America and by 2006 it was ranked in the top 10 of all shows in the country with much older art fairs from very large metropolitan areas. In 2008, Art on the Square was #1 in the nation for the first time. In the past 5 years, Art on the Square has been ranked #1 four times.
One of the many keys to its success is the new and exciting pieces added to the three-day weekend. This year professional designers from the St. Louis metro area will demonstrate how to use art in your home in collaboration with artists from the 2012 Art on the Square Show. Demonstrations are 30 to 40 minutes followed by a question and answer period. etro East residents are so fortunate to enjoy many local musical organizations that bring silence to life with their many different genres and styles of music. For 86 years now, the all-volunteer Belleville Community Band has been entertaining audiences of all ages at concerts and parades throughout the area. They also have members of all ages – from 8 to 87! Every Wednesday evening the sounds of marches, overtures, show tunes, swing arrangements, and popular songs of old and new, drift from the windows of the Belleville Philharmonic Hall and hover over the streets of downtown. Dedicated band members include doctors, lawyers, teachers, military active and retired alike, mechanics, engineers and students of music. They arrive between 7 and 7:15 p.m. to chat, ready their instruments and music, and start on the downbeat at 7:30 p.m. sharp. One evening recently the band was rehearsing such favorites as “Lord, Guard and Guide” by Robert Jager, an arrangement of Shenandoah, “Eagle’s Wings” by Robert W. Smith and “Our Director March” by F.E. Bigelon to name a few. “We enjoy representing Belleville and play 10 to 12 concerts per year,” said Director Christopher Gass, band and choir director at Grant School. “Of course we love to entertain and welcome any opportunity.” Organized in 1926 by a small group of Legionnaires who were also musicians, the band was incorporated as a not-for-profit organization in 1952. They performed as a marching band at state fairs and homecomings through the area until 1979. Determining in 1980 that they might gain new members thus community interest, the board of directors added the distinction of a German band called Das Blas Kapelle loosely translated as "that wind band." Now the musicians can be found not only in a traditional concert venue but as a German band at such well-known events as Strassenfest, and Oktoberfest plus many other outdoor venues during the summer.

Women’s Ride Day Group rides are not an uncommon event for The Bike Surgeon in Shiloh. Nearly every day of the week, groups gather at the shop before or after a ride to share their common interest in cycling. But there was something particular about the group ride on Sunday morning, March 18: Aside from the unseasonably warm weather and enormous turnout of over 100 people, every single rider that day was a woman.
E
very March 18, International Women’s Day, is an occasion to honor and praise women for their accomplishments throughout history. Fittingly, National Women’s Ride Day was designed to celebrate the bicycle and the critical role it has played in women’s history by providing emancipating freedom across the globe as an inexpensive and efficient means to access work, markets, schools, and health care. Bike shops across the country hosted women-only group rides on March 18, assembling ladies of all ages and experience to share their common love of cycling. Of the hundreds of organized rides that day, The Bike Surgeon’s event turned out to be the largest women-only group ride in the country. It was an inspirational sight to see so many ladies flying down the road together, chatting, laughing and finding new riding partners. All too often women are intimidated by the thought of organized group rides and prefer to ride by themselves, or in smaller groups of family or friends. National Women’s Ride Day was the perfect event to break through those barriers and experience riding in a larger group without the pressure. After the ride, the ladies gathered at The Bike Surgeon for refreshments, feeling connected and capable. The buzz and the excitement of
seeing how many women in the community enjoy riding created the perfect opportunity to create a new organized group ride to add to the mix at The Bike Surgeon. Now, every Monday evening there is something slightly different about the shop’s organized ride: you won’t find a man anywhere in the pack. Posted on the National Specialized Riders site: “The first success story came in from Bike Surgeon! Way to go, ladies!” And the following comments: "We had a great day yesterday, thanks for the support and concept!!! Over 120 ladies rode in one of three distances, 10, 20 and 30 mile rides, we had ages from 7 to 65 on the ride and all were ladies....I checked :)." "The rides were led by the Ladies of the Surgeon crew which included owners Emily, Karissa and Kim, and a shop employee, Colleen, along with a few other volunteers from the local cycling club. We had a huge after party at the shop with over 250 folks there for that including all the ladies and their boyfriends, families, spouses, and a few stray guys looking for a date. It was tons of fun, check it out on our Facebook page." Bike Surgeon is located at 3348 Green Mount Crossing; (618) 622-1693; www.bikesurgeon.com; and like us on Facebook.

As a young man, Croak had a long career with the Intercity Baseball League playing for East St. Louis, his hometown. “Once I turned 35 years old I picked up golf really for something to do at first – just playing for the competition, he said. But he discovered a true talent and enjoyed playing in countless golf leagues and tournaments around the state and around the country. “I had the good fortune to play in some celebrity tournaments with people like Jack Lemmon, Glen Campbell, Jack Buck, Gary Lynn, Johnny Bench, Al Harbors, he said. “In 1982, I played in a LPGA Pro-Am Event at the Rail Golf Course in Springfield, Ill. and drew Nancy Lopez as my partner! He has also played some of the famous courses in the country. Now he offers golf lessons for just $30 at the Practice Tee on Old Collinsville Road. “Danny Polites allows me to use his facility which is just great, Croak said. And, Croak has a FREE golf clinic at Locust Hills on Monday evenings at 6 p.m.

“You know there’s no secret to golfing, it’s all in the grip, he said. “Put your thumbs up on the club and position your arms so they form a triangle. Never lose the triangle, he said. “Everyone likes to say it’s a mental game, too, but first it’s physical.
Here are a couple of tips from “Moe Knows Golf: Sand Shots: Line your feet, knees and shoulders to the left of your target and leave the club head open, pointed to the right opposite your front toe and 2 inches behind the ball. Chipping: Stand with your feet 4 to 6 inches apart and hit the ball as if you were putting. Pick out a spot halfway between you and the flag – if you hit it there it’ll roll right up.
