Simple Steps To Renew Your Interior Fabric Finishes
A Guide to Caring for Custom Window Treatments and Home Textiles Unlike clothing textiles, most home decorating fabrics are not designed to withstand laundering. Many detergents contain a variety of harsh chemicals that can damage the fibers and leave a film that attracts more dust and dirt to your window treatments, custom bedding and decorative pillows. In fact, certain fibers such as rayon and silk should never be exposed to water. To increase the longevity of your custom pieces, it is often better to leave the original fabric finishes in place. Dry cleaning solutions and techniques vary in quality, and there is much to risk in bringing your custom treatments to an establishment that is not willing to warrant their work against damage, shrinking and/or color changes that might occur.
Drapery
If at all possible, drapery and/or custom top treatments should never be dry cleaned or laundered. These products can include a face fabric, interlining and lining fabrics that are all composed of different fiber contents and weaving structures. These different layers will react to wet cleaning processes differently and they may shrink at different rates. The result can be irreparable. Even without cleaning you may notice that your drapery will shrink up a bit or sag over the years in response to the changing humidity and temperature levels in your home. To minimize these reactions, keep your home environment as constant as possible. To care for your custom treatment, vacuum with a clean brush attachment in order to remove dust and debris. Frequency is dependent upon the amount of dust in your home. If the coffee table needs dusting, it is wise to vacuum, at a minimum, the horizontal planes of your custom décor pieces. Vacuum the entire piece bi-annually or more often if you have pets, live on an unpaved road or leave your windows open. If you have floor vents below your drapery, buy deflectors to push the air away from the windows and prevent them from becoming air filters for your home.
Be careful not to touch draperies when opening and closing them unless your hands have just been washed and thoroughly dried. Our skin contains a great many oils and environmental residues that can stain your drapery. Consider use of cord-drawn traverse rods and or operating wands to help you to accomplish this feat.
Upholstery and Pillows
We recommend that you spot clean these items with a damp white cloth as soon as a stain occurs. ALWAYS test the fabric first with a clean white rag in an inconspicuous spot to see if any color from the cloth comes off on your rag. If it does, the fabric is not colorfast and professional cleaning may be necessary. At a minimum, vacuum the horizontal surfaces of your upholstered pieces and pillows with a clean vacuum brush attachment each time you dust to remove dust and debris before it can be pressed down into the fibers of the fabric. Don’t be afraid to take your cushions and pillows outside for a good hand beating prior to application of the vacuum. Each piece should be completely vacuumed at least twice per year on all sides. Remember, these dry, in-home, cleaning techniques need to be applied to your home textiles more frequently if you have additional dust-generating environmental factors in your home. If you integrate good maintenance habits into your home cleaning routine, your high quality home décor pieces can last many years. If you are looking to add to your home’s décor this fall, call Eye on Design for your custom window treatment needs. Call today at 618-257-9750 or learn more at www.eod4u.com.

Award-Winning Fulford Home Remodeling Brings Home Local And National Honors Fulford Home Remodeling, a division of Fulford Construction, Inc., has been in business for almost 40 years in the Metro East. Fulford Home Remodeling is a full-service residential remodeling company that has everything its customers are looking for in their remodeling experience: outstanding design, professional office and construction staff, quality trained craftsmen, and excellent service after the sale. Fulford’s entire team strives to provide the utmost in customer satisfaction. So much so, that the company has won numerous awards both locally and nationally. Each year since 1986, the Remodeling Big50 – chosen by Remodeling magazine inducts 50 owners of remodeling companies that have set exceptionally high standards for professionalism and integrity through exemplary business practices, craftsmanship, and impact in their community or the industry at large and Fulford Home Remodeling received this prestigious award for 2011! The 2011 Big50 winners are featured in the May issue of Remodeling, a national trade publication read by more than 80,000 professional remodeling contractors. “This award is like being inducted in to the Hall of Fame,” said Trent Ketchum, project consultant at Fulford. “The selection process is very intense – they look at everything about your business from the inside out. We won for Business Savvy which means we really know our numbers and where we’re at financially every day.”
Home Builders Association Remodeler of Distinction Awards
The HBA of Greater Southwest Illinois began an annual award program in 2001 for five to six categories of projects such as basement, bathroom and kitchen remodeling. “Fulford has won at least two awards per year since the start of the program 10 years ago,” Ketchum said. “These awards are such an honor because you are being judged by a group of your peers.” Featured here are the two 2010 award-winning projects by Fulford: Basement Finish for the Landgon’s of O’Fallon The decision to finish this basement was driven by the desire to bring an “evening out” home for friends and family to enjoy. The final design included a bedroom with egress window, three-fourth bathroom, exercise room, media room, pool table area, and a custom wet bar. To enhance the “evening out” experience; Fulford’s design combined the media area, pool table space, and custom bar into a large open entertainment room. Custom bar amenities included bar-height seating for four, a full-size refrigerator, microwave, wine storage, custom oak bar top, and a flat screen TV on the angled bar wall to allow for viewing from either the bar or pool table.
Master Bathroom Extension & Remodel For The Kelsey’s of the West End of Belleville The Kelsey’s decision to remodel their 1920s master bathroom was driven by the desire for a larger shower, soaking tub and vanity seating area with storage. It was communicated to Fulford’s team that the old-home “charm” had to stay, but more space and new finishes were necessary to create an inviting and open feel. Fulford’s master plan included completely “gutting” the existing bathroom and reutilizing an 8’ by 7’6” space from an adjacent seating area. Some new features included new wainscoting, multiple lighting options, marble “basket-weave” tile floors, new energy efficient “Simonton” windows, and a new walk-in shower complete with “glossy” subway-tiles and a rain-can shower head.

Concrete Countertops Tops List of Hot Kitchen Trends
It's becoming well known by now that concrete has become a material that homeowners and designers are requesting and utilizing in their homes, offices, retail outlets, restaurants, etc., in the most amazing ways. But leading the charge in this trend are concrete countertops. The real advantage with these counters is that they make possible so many new, custom one-of-a-kind designs. Concrete counters are the now, yet they have been out long enough to amend early problems. “Remember back to the first time you heard the term ‘concrete countertop?’ You probably imagined your 20-year-old driveway in all its oil-stained glory sitting atop your cabinets,” said Keith Griffith, owner of Bricks and Stones Creative Concrete Professionals. “But we are able to create veins that look completely natural and combine them with innovative sculpted edges that are just not seen anywhere else.” Methods of design and installation vary among contractors, but generally countertops are either pre-cast in a shop or formed on site. For those who pre-cast, the advantage is to pour in the shop where conditions are controlled using special casting tables. Also, the countertop is obviously in their possession while it is curing and until it can be adequately sealed. Contractors who build countertops on site like to do so because they can form the countertop to any client’s particular need: radius edges, curved corners, etc. Concrete offers the opportunity to be completely custom utilizing any kind of design that comes to mind.
Part of the uniqueness of concrete countertops is that they can be any color. With integral pigments, acid stains and dyes, the color possibilities are endless. Homeowners love the versatility of concrete and the ability to coordinate with their décor whatever it may be: apple green, cranberry red, slate blue, etc. Any color can be matched with little difficulty. Concrete could be the right choice for your home if: • You want something unique and personalized • You want something that looks natural and has character • You appreciate high-quality, hand-crafted items • Granite is too shiny, too formal, too common • Synthetic solid surface materials look and feel like plastic • You need a color or visual texture that's not available with other countertop materials Polished Concrete Increasingly popular within commercial and residential facilities is polished concrete: a process that enhances the natural beauty of existing concrete by hardening and polishing the concrete. The benefits of natural concrete are durability and aesthetic value. Polishing results in a smooth, sealed appearance. For more information about concrete countertops or polished concrete, you may call Bricks and Stones at (618) 363-0829.

Protect Skin Care Investment
Protecting your skin care investment is ESSENTIAL to success! Who wouldn't want to prolong the results of your Botox and Dermal Filler Treatment? The same applies with Laser Treatments and Microcurrent! The first step in protecting your investment is always skin care. Start with the basics: thorough cleansing, prevention and protection are musts. Discuss your goals with a professional Skin Therapist (or esthetician) to know what products are going to be right for your particular skin type! And always use sun screen. As summer rolls to an end, you may be noticing a wrinkle or a few freckles you didn't have before. Now is the time to think about treating that damage and restoring your skin to be stronger and healthier. Each of the estheticians and laser specialists at Ooh La La Anti-Aging and Wellness Center have been thoroughly trained with both SkinMedica and Obagi Medical Grade Skin Care. With an in depth skin analysis and consultation, they can help you determine the right products for you in conjunction with the treatments you may be receiving. Two treatments Ooh La La recommends are LimeLight and the Pearl: • LimeLight is a non-invasive, skin rejuvenating treatment offering improved skin tone, reduced skin redness, and reduction in brown spots on the skin associated with sun damage and skin aging. It is ideal for the face, neck and decollete (chest). • The Pearl is the “one laser to choose” to renew your skin’s surface with quick, visible results. The Pearl is a laser resurfacing treatment that treats fine lines on the face and neck, uneven skin texture and light and dark spots caused by the sun. For more information, call (618) 288-9117 today. The office is located at 2102 Vadalabene Drive in Maryville; www.oohlalawellness.com.
HEALTH UPDATE • SPECIAL SECTION
August is National Children’s Vision and Learning Month Any one of the above symptoms is a sign that you need to schedule a vision exam with a developmental optometrist. A Developmental Vision Evaluation is needed to test all of the visual skills critical to reading and learning: eye movement control, focusing near to far, sustaining clear focus, eye teaming ability, depth perception, visual motor integration, visual memory and visual perceptual skills.
As children are headed back to school it’s time to take a moment to review how vision problems can interfere with a child’s ability to read and learn. While 1 out of 4 children struggle with reading and learning because of undiagnosed vision problems, “sixty percent of kids with learning disabilities have undiagnosed vision problems,â€? according to a conservative estimate from the American Optometric Association. Too often parents assume that if a child passes a vision screening that everything is fine with their eyes, and that couldn’t be further from the truth. Being able to see things clearly far away is no guarantee that a child can see things up close. In order to read, children not only have to see the letters clearly, but they have to be able to move their eyes easily from left to right (tracking) and be able to see for a long period of time. August is National Children’s Vision and Learning month to help bring attention to the critical role vision plays in a child’s education. Therefore it is vital that parents and educators know the signs that indicate that vision may be playing a role in their child’s difficulties: • headaches when reading • slow or incomplete copy work from board or paper • avoidance of reading • poor reading comprehension • frequent loss of place while reading • complains words move on the page • short attention span • smart in everything but school • labeled ADD, ADHD, dyslexic • working below potential
According to Dr. Thomas Unger, of Troy, IL, “The good news is that unlike other disabilities, the majority of vision based learning problems can be fixed. For more information on the critical link between vision and learning, Dr. Unger can be contacted at: 618-667-2020 or visit his website at www.readingandvision.com.

Non-Surgical, FDA-Approved Osteoarthritis Treatment May Prevent Knee
HEALTH UPDATE • SPECIAL SECTION
Replacements Metro-East's Only Program Fully Accredited by OsteoArthritis Centers of America
Have you ever wondered how different your life would be if you could get rid of your knee pain? Where would you go? What would you do? What would you give for a day or a week or a lifetime of pain free mobility? For the last 10 years our osteoarthritis program has sustained an 86% success rate.
Can Osteoarthritis Be Cured? Unfortunately, no. However, this program can significantly reduce, if not eliminate your pain and dramatically slow down the arthritic process. The goal of the program is to restore your quality of life and prevent knee replacement surgery. This is the only
Meet Dr. William Thom “As a board certified, fellowship-trained Pain Management Specialist and Medical Director at Associated Physicians Group, I’m excited to announce a new addition to our already successful, non-surgical knee pain program, the BioniCare Knee System. This new technology was recently featured on "The Doctors" TV show. I am confident that this new addition will give you the best chance yet of non-surgical relief from your knee pain.
Considering Surgery? People who suffer from knee pain typically try supplements or pain medication before seeking help from a doctor. When all else fails and the pain is too much, some feel that surgery is the only option. Before you put yourself through months of immobility, pain, rehab, and hefty medical bills, consider these facts:
Success is defined as significant, if not complete reduction of pain and prevention of knee replacement surgery.
program in the entire Metro-East fully accredited by the OsteoArthritis Centers of America.
If you suffer from any degree of knee pain, I invite you to regain control of your life by visiting Associated Physicians Group’s state-of-the-art medical facilities.”
What Is Osteoarthritis (OA)? Osteoarthritis, also known as degenerative joint disease, is the most common type of arthritis. In Osteoarthritis, the surface layer of cartilage breaks down and wears away. This allows the bones under the cartilage to rub together resulting in pain, swelling, and loss of motion of the joint. In most individuals, joint damage develops gradually over years. However, it can progress quickly.
What Causes Osteoarthritis? The cause of Osteoarthritis is unknown. Factors that might cause it include the following: • Getting older (wear and tear) • Being overweight • Joint injury • Unstable/unbalanced joints • A genetic defect in the joint cartilage • Stresses on the joints from certain activities, including sports, work, and leisure activities

What Else Is Available To Treat Knee Pain? After careful study and several trials, the FDA cleared a treatment aimed at helping those with knee pain. This treatment is a high-tech answer for all those who think that surgery, dietary supplements, and prescription medications are the only option to eliminate knee pain. How Does This Treatment Work?
It combines three parts: The BioniCare Knee System, Hyalgan injections, and physical therapy. BioniCare consists of a comfortable wrap worn while you are sleeping and inside the wrap is an electrical joint stimulator. The joint stimulator is FDA-approved for improving the overall health of knee cartilage. A custom-fitted, unloading brace can “unload” the pressure from your knee joint and provide rapid, significant relief while walking and standing. An injection of hyaluronic acid (viscosupplementation) is performed under an advanced live motion x-ray. Hyaluronic acid bonds with the naturally occurring joint fluid found in your knee to create a lubricating and cushioning layer. It also reduces pain, inflammation, and swelling of the joint. Most patients compare the treatment to getting a shot at the doctor’s office and report little pain or discomfort. A unique form of pain free physical therapy, combining both slow and high speed motion helps maximize the beneficial effects of the injections.
What Is Actually Injected Into The Knee? The medication is called Hyalgan and it is an all natural fluid that is very similar to the fluid found in your joint. Hyaluronic acid or Hyalgan contributes to the viscous nature of the joint fluid, nourishes the cartilage, helps eliminate waste products, lubricates the joint, and acts as a shock absorber inside the joint. Hyaluronic acid is reduced or lost in those who suffer from Osteoarthritis. Therefore, the easiest way to think of hyaluronic acid/Hyalgan injections is that they help replace the joint’s natural fluid, which is otherwise lost in Osteoarthritis. It is similar to changing the oil in your car. If your car were to run low on oil, you would have some serious wear and tear on moving parts. More oil would be necessary to remedy the situation. When Will I Feel Results? Most people feel better in just a matter of weeks and can begin enjoying everyday activities. Will My Insurance Cover This Treatment?
Yes. At Associated Physicians Group, we accept most major insurances, including Medicare. Plus, with most insurances, you do NOT need a referral from your Primary Care Physician.
How Do I Know That This Is Right For Me? In most cases, if you have knee pain, this is a great solution. Our providers will give you a fair and honest evaluation of your particular knee pain. Call today to schedule your Knee Evaluation. Toll free at 1-888-363-8333 or locally at 618-628-8211.

Colonoscopy
A painless procedure that could literally save your life
T
he subject of colonoscopies isn’t always a crowd pleaser, however, the knowledge of their importance should be at the top of one’s priority list particularly those in their 40s and definitely after turning 50. Colonoscopy is an important and very necessary procedure for men and women used to see inside the colon and rectum. It can detect inflamed tissue, ulcers and abnormal growths. The procedure is used to look for early signs of colorectal cancer and can help doctors diagnose unexplained changes in bowel habits, abdominal pain, bleeding from the anus, and weight loss. “Everyone should have a colonoscopy at the age of 50 according to the government,” said Dr. Keith Thomae M.D., F.A.C.S., general surgeon and president of Metroeast Surgical Specialty in Highland. “However I recommend this painless procedure to persons in their 40s as well. It can literally save lives.” “Many times after performing a colonoscopy, I have to go into an exam room afterward and tell the patient they have cancer,” he said. “But I can also tell them the good news which is ‘we caught it early!’” The scary thing about colon cancer is that “most patients actually don't have any symptoms which of course is the reason to have a screening,” Dr. Thomae said. Preparing for a colonoscopy at Metroeast Surgical Specialty is much less strenuous than it used to be – “we have a small solution to drink rather than the big gallon solution” and the patient doesn’t start the process until 5 p.m. the night before so they do not have to miss more than a day of work. “It’s a minor procedure where the patient is completely knocked out and it only lasts 20 minutes. All you need is someone to drive you home and you’re back to work the next day.”
You should have a colonoscopy to screen for cancer and if you are experiencing any of the following:
• • • • •
constipation blood in stool lower abdominal pain history of anemia irritable bowl syndrome
Metroeast Surgical Specialty is a State Certified Surgical Center with an experienced staff of three nurses having 25 years of experience each; and one of the most experienced endoscopists (physician who looks at the colon using a small video scope) in the area. The center is also able to get a person scheduled in one week or less if necessary rather than the two to three weeks elsewhere. While they take all insurance types, there are discounts for those without insurance. Government statistics show that Metroeast Surgical Specialty is one-third the cost of other facilities. For more information and to schedule your consultation with Dr. Thomae, call (618) 6548100 and visit the comprehensive web site at www.metroeastsurgicalspecialty.com. Metroeast Surgical Specialty is located at 1212 Broadway Suite B, Highland, Ill. 62249.

Headaches? Neck & Back Pain?
Get Relief Today! With over 18 combined years of experience, Dr. Josh Ferrell and Dr. Jamey Perulfi have given great relief to people suffering from headaches, and stiff necks and upper backs. Located in the heart of O’Fallon for four years now, their clients have enjoyed gentle, safe and effective chiropractic care. Instead of recommending medications, Chiropractic Plus seeks to help the client heal from within by: • Increasing the body’s ability to adapt to stress • Improving body mechanics • Reducing and eliminating aches and pains “So many of us are used to sitting behind a computer all day often leading to poor postural habits,â€? said Dr. Josh Ferrell. “Poor posture leads to a myriad of symptoms such as upper back pain, neck pain, shoulder tightness, numbness/discomfort in arms and/or hands, and headaches. Your spine, nervous system and the muscles that support them are truly a reflection of the accumulated daily stresses we put ourselves through.â€? Headaches in particular have become a niche specialty for the office. And, Dr. Ferrell said, he’s found that women suffer more from headaches than men, or, women just tend to care more about their health and seek help. There are many causes of headaches including stress, odors, bright lights, noise, fatigue, certain foods, hormonal shifts, allergies, as well as genetic predisposition. Chiropractic treatment includes methods aimed at reducing the tightness found in the joints and muscles. One of these approaches is called spinal manipulation or “adjustmentsâ€? where the joints in the neck are moved to restore motion and reduce joint fixations. Another chiropractic approach in the management of headaches includes soft tissue therapy where trigger points found in tight muscles are addressed through various forms of massage and mobilization methods. Other treatment approaches that chiropractic utilizes include stress management, diet modifications, nutritional supplementation, and sleep restoration. “We want to make your experience affordable, convenient and fast,â€? said Dr. Ferrell. “Of course we suggest appointments but we also love walk-ins. Just stop in on your lunch hour, after work or on a Saturday. Also – your first appointment including analysis and treatment is on us!â€? Over the years, Anderson Hospital has built a strong partnership with Cardinal Glennon to bring a wide range of specialized pediatric services close to home. In addition to the new 24/7 pediatric emergency and newborn care, Anderson Hospital offers families a Pediatric Therapy Center which provides pediatric outpatient speech/language, physical, and occupational therapies, and pediatric audiology. In addition, the Cardinal Glennon Specialty Outpatient Clinic on Anderson Hospital’s Campus brings specialists in Neurology, Orthopedics, Developmental Pediatrics, Pediatric Surgery, Endocrinology, and Pulmonology to our children of the Metro East. “Parents have always struggled to decide when it is best to come to Anderson for pediatric care and when it is best to ‘cross the river’,” said Dr. Wangard. “More and more, Cardinal Glennon and Anderson Hospital are making this an easy choice for parents.”

Business Profile
The “Reel Law Firm Opens In Swansea Successful attorney is dedicated to serving the needs of the community After developing a successful reputation for himself at three national law firms, Jeffrey T. Reel decided to “come home to the Metro East and serve the community in which he was raised. Many will remember fondly his father, John Reel, who perfected many smiles as an orthodontist for over 30 years.
“I am most proud of my proven track record in obtaining very favorable results for my clients, Reel said. “And I’ve tried and resolved countless matters from cases involving individuals to representing business clients in complex litigation on a national basis.
A graduate of Belleville Township High School, Jeffrey Reel attended Southern Methodist University and graduated in 1986 from Southern Illinois University-Carbondale. From there he studied at and graduated in 1990 from Thomas M. Cooley Law School in Michigan.
“As a trial attorney my entire career, I’m very familiar with court procedures in St. Clair, Monroe and Madison counties, he said. He has also represented individuals and businesses in quasi judicial proceedings, i.e. mediations and arbitrations. Honors and awards include: Cooley Law Review, Dean’s List, Honor Roll, and Merit Scholarships for Academic Excellence.
Now possessing a breadth of knowledge in many areas of the law, Reel decided the time was right to open his own practice in Swansea. “I am committed to serving the citizens where I grew up and enjoy working hard for the community, he said.
Reel lives in Belleville with his wife, Marlaina, and lazy dog Bailey the Yellow Lab.
Specific areas of practice are general litigation including product liability, personal injury, wrongful death, medical malpractice, construction liability,architectural/engineering malpractice, civil rights, premises liability, toxic torts, dramshop and worker's compensation.
The Reel Law Firm, P.C. is located at #3 Executive Woods Court, Suite 110 in Belleville; (618) 416-4099 office, (618) 239-6080 fax. www.reellawfirm.com

Howyuduin? Pizza Lovers Are Crazy For Schiappa’s Moon-Sized Pies
Who serves the best pizza in town? “Fuggedaboudit!” Schiappa’s does of course! With two locations in Lebanon and O’Fallon, Schiappa’s has been feeding customers’ pizza addictions since 1979. Pronounced Ski-ah-pahs, the original restaurant in Lebanon opened on St. Louis Street by Dona and John Schieppe who were both teachers in the area. Born to parents from Italy, John Schieppe traveled from New Jersey to attend McKendree College, met his bride and stayed for a lifetime. He knew the area was in need of authentic Italian food so he gathered family recipes from Italy and the East Coast, hung a shingle and rocked the pizza lovers of Lebanon. Soon the restaurant gained so many fans they had to expand… and expand again until they found their current spot at 402 South Madison Street/Route 4 in Lebanon. Then in 1993 the second location opened in O’Fallon adjacent to the hotel next door. “I graduated with a degree in marketing in 1995 and told my dad I would help him for a year at the O’Fallon store,” said Steve Schieppe. And 16 years later, he is still running the popular restaurant with the friendliest staff in town. Think you and a buddy can eat a 29-inch pizza in 30 minutes? How about two friends and a 36-inch pie in 30 minutes? Steve Schieppe, manager of Schiappa’s in O’Fallon, said 10 pairs have polished off the 29-inch and only two parties finished
the 36" inch. Can’t imagine a 36-inch pizza? One thing’s for sure it won’t fit out the front door – in fact it won’t even fit out of the kitchen so there’s a special “pie hole” cut in the wall just for these moon-sized pies. Contestants win prizes with the ultimate prize a trip to Las Vegas from Destinations by Ellen. The menu includes plenty of other delicious items including pastas, calzones, Stromboli and salads – “we use only romaine” – said Schieppe. People come as much for the wings, though, with eight different varieties to choose from: mild, hot, scorching, sweet mild, sweet hot, honey mustard, honey barbecue and Caribbean jerk. “We also have a nice banquet facility where we do many rehearsal dinners, showers of all kinds, Christmas parties, retirement parties, going-away parties, happy hours, small wedding receptions – just about any special occasion,” he said. Schiappa’s is also known for their expansive lunch buffet with fresh items including the pizza and wings. “Everything we offer is prepared homemade on location!” Schieppe said. Visit the Lebanon location on Route 4 across from Lebanon High School, (618) 537-4965; or the O’Fallon location at 1050 Eastgate Drive, (618) 624-2033; www. schiappas.com. The easiest way to find the O’Fallon restaurant is to take the first left after heading west on Highway 50 from the Scott-O'Fallon Road. Marketplace Magazine
