SPENCER HOMES Bringing unique designs and style to the O'Fallon market this Fall

pencer Homes enters the O'Fallon market later this year with The Enclave at Augusta Greens and Augusta Greens neighborhoods conveniently situated at the corner of Old Collinsville and Milburn School Roads. The display home featured above is in Brookshire Hamlet at 115 Knights Bridge Lane in Edwardsville.

S

Each model is designed with careful attention to detail and uncompromising standards, which are characteristic of a Spencer-built home. This expertise in building elegant homes means they automatically include signature features that most builders consider upgrades. The differences are apparent inside and out.

“Augusta Greens will be a wonderful addition to the O’Fallon community,” said Spencer Homes founder Mike Rathgeb. “These homes will be both attractive and affordable, and just right for a new or growing family.” In addition, the location is only minutes to Scott Air Force base, shopping, restaurants and interstate access.

Inside, innovative floor plans reveal beautiful cabinetry, solid surface counter and use of hardwood, tile and intricate millwork. Matching comfort with aesthetically appealing features, homebuyers will find tall ceilings, large windows spilling abundant natural light and gourmet kitchens.

August Greens is adjacent to the Spencer Homes exclusive neighborhood, The Enclave at Augusta Greens. Imagine a lifestyle without the hassles of yard work or exterior upkeep. Choosing to live here will free homeowners up to indulge in the things people enjoy: travel, volunteering or finding a new hobby. The maintenance–free lifestyle that comes with an Enclave at Augusta Greens home clears the calendar from outside routines like cutting grass, landscaping, watering the lawn or shoveling snow.

Outside, it’s maintenance-free exteriors of brick and stone. The concrete walks and driveways are bordered by fully landscaped and irrigated yards covered by the homeowner’s association. The private, outdoor patio or maintenance-free composite decking bring the outside in.

Today's customers demand remarkable living spaces and incredible neighborhoods. To them, how they live in a home with a sense of community defines the way they want to live. They judge a home by how it functions and if it has welldefined spaces: A home where it’s easy to entertain, have holiday gatherings, or just sit on the patio sharing a glass of wine with friends.

Accessibility and long-term mobility design, including zero entry garages and master showers as well as wider doorways, pathways and stairs, is testimony to our commitment of exceeding expectations. Visit the display at Brookshire Hamlet and call (618) 659-0217 for more information; www.liveaugustagreens.com.

ORGANIZE YOUR HOME With A Garage Or Closet Remodel

I

nterestingly, the garage is generally the most under-utilized space in the home. Although it’s an extension of the home - and is the dumping ground for everything that doesn’t fit in the house – it’s important to have a plan for garage storage that can help organize the entire home. When the holiday’s roll around and the sports seasons change, the home can be ready no matter what time of the year. A Tailored Living garage organization specialist will help maximize garage storage space with custom garage cabinets and wall storage solutions tailored to the client’s particular activities. “Won’t it be nice to find exactly what you’re looking for when you need it,” said Rich McQuay, owner of Tailored Living of West and St. Charles, Mo. “I guarantee you will wonder how you ever overlooked this valuable, extra garage storage space."

Custom Closets

Not all closets are created equal. Throughout the home, there are undoubtedly several types of closets: walkin, reachin, utility, easilyaccessible and “why-is this-even-here space?” Closet space is valuable in any home and, generally, no one believes they have enough. Tailored Living’s designers can help maximize closet storage space throughout your home with custom closet systems. “Whether in the bedroom, family room or entryway, the company guarantees there is more space than you realize with our custom storage solutions,” McQuay said. “ We can help you unclutter and organize for more efficient, stress-free living with custom closet systems.” Call (636) 728-0333 to schedule a free in-home consultation and 3D design. Tailoredliving.com and RAKcoatings.com.

Using a combination of garage cabinets, shelves, Gridwall or Slatwall wall storage systems, overhead racks and custom garage flooring, the garage will be transformed into a masterpiece of utility and beauty, making garage organization a part of everyday life. Custom garage cabinets give a clean, uniform look to your garage. Cabinets bring order out of chaos by hiding everything behind closed doors. Clutter and piles are eliminated and there’s a designated place for every item in the garage. Open wall storage is ideal for sports equipment and large tools like rakes, shovels and hoses that create a safety hazard if stacked on the floor. But no garage design is truly complete without new garage flooring. Untreated, dull concrete will not only detract from beautiful new cabinets, it’s harder to keep clean, tends to hold moisture and cold, and is ergonomically at odds with knees and backs. Tailored Living has a wide range of options for garage flooring to add that finishing touch. Marketplace Magazine | Fall Issue 2017 | marketplacemagazineonline.com | 9

The Holiday Shoppe Set To Open On October 19 Since opening in their present location in 2015, customers have enjoyed excellent pricing, free decorating advice and a wide variety of furniture, rugs, mirrors, home décor, and art pieces at That Finishing Touch. The well-appointed boutique is located at 629 West Highway US 50 in O’Fallon Centre next to Walgreens in O’Fallon. The owner of That Finishing Touch, Ricka Kreider, has seen her business increase yearly as customers have come to appreciate her eye for decorating as well as her ability to offer a variety of unusual and classic décor items at very reasonable prices. This time of year turns to the holiday season and as she has done every year since 2012, the The Holiday Shoppe promises to be unique, beautiful and will inspire ideas for your seasonal décor. Kreider has spent the last year gathering holiday items to create The Holiday Shoppe, which is scheduled to open at 4 p.m. on October 19 for an Open House that will run until 8 p.m. As with everything else in the shop, you can expect excellent value on all of the treasures on display. What treasures can you look for this year? Fall colors, more Halloween and Thanksgiving themed items, decorated Christmas trees, a wide array of reasonably priced decorations/ornaments, Nativity sets in a wide range of prices, and unique vintage Christmas décor of all types. Custom-made wreaths, garland, ribbon priced by the yard, and both ready-made and custom bows are available in the store and are offered at very competitive prices. The Holiday Shoppe will strike a balance between holiday items, unique home décor and gift items. That Finishing Touch will also offer items from “Poo¬Pourri,” soy candles/melts and a large

assortment of new jewelry (including boxed sets), which will all make great gift items. Hosting a holiday event for a group or club? Ask about an evening private event hosted in the shop after normal hours. Kreider has also provided multiple clients with custom home holiday decorating in the past, but all the available slots are filled for this season. In preparation for restaging the store, the store will offer its annual “Once a year 25 percent off everything in the shop to make room for the Holiday redo!” sale. Dates for this sale is October 3 through 14 with 25 percent off every item in the store (no additional discounts). As in the past, in order to redecorate fully for the holiday season, the store will close at the normal 4 p.m. time on October 14 until reopening at 4 p.m. on October 19. There will be light refreshments and door prizes: Please stop in for a look at the transformation! Looking ahead to Black Friday in November, the store will open early at 9 a.m. Friday, November 24, so watch for the next Marketplace Ad in November that will have news about the Black Friday Sale. For those Black Friday shoppers, come by for a respite and enjoy a cup of coffee. That Finishing Touch, Ltd. can be reached at (618) 726-7811. Items in the store can be viewed in the Galleries tab under the New Arrivals and Current Displays pages on the website that is updated weekly: www.thatfinishingtouchltd.com. Normal store hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday.

You have wanted to put the final touch on your home’s décor and tie it all together with coordinating window treatments, but you aren’t sure that you can justify the expense. Consider then, that the properly designed window treatment can not only add beauty and style to your home but also work to significantly reduce your home maintenance costs over time. A well-engineered plan to dress your windows in the right shutters, silks, sheers or shades will increase your home’s energy efficiency throughout the year and protect your furniture and flooring investments from the permanent damage caused by direct sunlight. With approximately 44 percent of your utility bill attributed to heating and cooling, energy-efficient window treatments can translate into measurable year-round savings. Many energy experts recommend adding more efficient window coverings rather than going to the expense of replacing the windows. Use of window treatments to control drafts and heat loss dates back hundreds of years to those heavy velvet puddled draperies found in the castles of Europe. Your local window treatment professional can introduce you to the most energy-efficient products available today. A product’s R-Value is a measurement of its ability to keep heat in and cold out. The higher the R-Value, the better that product is at retaining indoor warmth. A phenomenal product designed to increase R-Value is the Hunter Douglas Architella™ cellular shade. This product features an innovative twist that provides more depth of color at the window and an R-Value of 4.5 in addition to your current window system. Incredibly, this figure is more than 7 times greater than the R-Value provided by a common 2” faux wood blind making it a better choice for long-term energy savings. Another elegant and time-tested solution for the reduction of heat loss at the window is the selection of classic shutter systems which offer an average R-Value of 2.5 and provide you with multiple levels of privacy and light control. A product’s Summer U-Value is a measurement of its ability to reflect heat. For example, a window treatment that reduces incoming heat by 70 percent, has a summer U-Value of .30. The lower the U-Value, the more effective it is in reflecting heat away from your home. To reduce heat gain, select a low U-Value treatment with white or light colored backing and install it an inch or two from the glass to create an air pocket. Non-reflected heat that builds up in the pocket during the day will dissipate through the glass at night when the temperature outside cools. Not surprisingly, you will find that shutters and cellular shades can provide the low UValues you need to lower your electric bill. Put your window treatments to work saving you money by employing them in the business of ultra-violet control and asset protection. Ultraviolet light entering your home as sunlight will quickly fade, weaken and destroy your furniture, flooring, upholstery and artwork. Sheers are multi-

Getting Off To A Good Start With Medicare What you need to know and do as you near your 65th birthday

Now is the time to start gathering information. • You need information from the Social Security Administration about whether you will be eligible for Medicare as they are responsible for determining eligibility and enrolling people in Medicare. Please note that the Railroad Retirement Board handles Medicare enrollment for railroad retirees. • You may be eligible for Medicare on your spouse's work record or as a widow or widower. You may also have questions about when to enroll in Medicare due to differences in ages between spouses. If you are not eligible for Medicare on your own work record or your spouse's work record, you may have the option to purchase Medicare coverage. • If you will be eligible for Medicare at age 65, you need to take specific actions to ensure Social Security has accurate information about your situation. • If you plan to continue working when you reach your 65th birthday, you need to take extra care in making insurance decisions. • You need information about health insurance to supplement your Medicare coverage - either an employer group health plan (EGHP) and/or a privately purchased Medicare supplement policy. Another option for some Medicare beneficiaries is to join a Medicare Advantage Plan.

Your Work Situation

Think about what your work situation will be when you reach your 65th birthday, as this will influence the health insurance decisions you make and actions you take. • Retired.

• Planning to retire at age 65. • Planning to keep working after age 65. If you do not fall into one of the previously mentioned categories, contact AgeSmart Community Resources at (618) 222-2561, the Senior Health Insurance Program (SHIP) at (800) 252-8966 or the Illinois Department of Human Services at (800) 252-8635.

If You Have NOT Signed Up for Social Security Benefits Before Age 65:

• Contact the Social Security Administration (800) 772-1213 to determine what your benefits' eligibility is.

Deadline for Action

• If you do plan to retire, discuss any possible EGHP coverage. If you are not satisfied with the coverage provided, look for a private Medicare supplement policy or a Medicare Advantage Plan.

If You Have Already Signed Up for Social Security Benefits:

• In either case, contact Social Security three months before your 65th birthday to make an appointment to file for Medicare and/or Social Security benefits if you plan to retire.

Enroll in Medicare at age 65 or to delay enrollment for a few years, it is extremely important that you take the action in the applicable enrollment period. Failure to act during this time period may cause major problems. • Study the Medicare & You book (even if you are not signed up). • If your employer provides an employer group health plan (EGHP) to retirees, talk to your company's benefits officer about the coverage offered under that plan. • If an EGHP is not available to you, you should begin shopping for a private Medicare Supplement policy or a Medicare Advantage Plan. • You will receive a Medicare card approximately three months before your 65th birthday. If you wish to enroll in Medicare Part B, you do not need to do anything further. Your Medicare card should show Medicare Part A and B coverage effective the first day of the month you will be age 65. • Make final arrangements for a private Medicare Supplement policy or a Medicare Advantage Plan and/or EGHP coverage.

• If you do not plan to retire, you may need help in determining if your EGHP or Medicare will be primary after you turn 65.

• You will receive a Medicare card. Check the card to be certain it reflects the options you chose when you filed. To get assistance with Medicare questions, whether you will be new to Medicare, have had Medicare for some time or are a caregiver for someone with Medicare, please contact your local SHIP Counselor. SHIP is not affiliated with any insurance company, counselors do not sell or solicit any type of insurance. To find your local SHIP counselor you can call the State of Illinois SHIP program at (800) 252-8966 or for the Counties of Bond, Clinton, Madison, Monroe, Randolph, St. Clair and Washington call AgeSmart Community Resources at (618) 2222561/(800) 326-3221.

Meet the group that’s taking physical therapy to a whole new level. Rock Steady Boxing at Memorial Belleville Health and Sports Center is empowering people affected by Parkinson’s disease one punch at a time. This dynamic new program, which incorporates elements of boxing and strength training, improves focus, balance, stability, and fortitude. Brought to the Memorial Belleville Health and Sports Center by coach Stacie King in June 2015, Rock Steady Boxing has grown to include four trainers and over 30 participants, with more joining the team daily.

Strengthening Muscles, Strengthening Bonds

Trainers and members alike have seen the benefits this forced intense exercise brings: cognitive changes like increased energy levels and decreased depression and physical adaptations like walking without falling, picking things up off the floor, and learning to navigate without a cane or walker. All individuals with Parkinson’s are encouraged to join, because Rock Steady Boxing coaches are specifically trained to modify exercises to fit participants’ fitness levels. Every exercise is methodically targeted and proven to help decrease the symptoms and slow the progression of Parkinson’s. With a support group held the second week of every month, members are able to form close relationships with others who suffer from Parkinson’s and discuss topics like anxiety, depression, nutrition, and the effects of medication. With the bonds of the close-knit group, Rock Steady Boxers are able to build strong bodies and stronger connections.

vide the best quality support for the participants. PSOP is held monthly and allows Parkinson’s patients to become involved in the community and benefit from engaging in activities with friends and neighbors. Physical therapists from Memorial attend the classes and provide information about the Big and Loud program as well. Rock Steady Boxing is a program that truly makes a difference in the lives of members and their families. Though they are faced with an incurable disease, the participants work hard every day to improve all aspects of wellness and refuse to give up. A young daughter of one of the participants wrote to a trainer, “You and the enthusiasm you bring to this boxing program are the miracle I prayed for. My dad has a renewed outlook. Strength has returned to his voice. Our conversations are filled with laughter and optimism.”The Rock Steady Boxing team in Belleville makes sure that no one fights Parkinson’s disease alone.

Join the Team

Those interested in joining the Rock Steady Boxing team need only have a release from their physician plus a consultation and evaluation with the head coach to begin exercising. Everyone is warmly welcomed. Please contact the Memorial Belleville Health and Sports Center at (618) 398-2778 for more information on this life-changing program.

ORE Physical Medicine was established in 2015 in Edwardsville and just two years later expanded to Millstadt thus giving patients two convenient location choices. With more than 20 years of combined experience in back pain treatment, Dr. Renee Edelen (Edwardsville) and Dr. Kristina Heafner (Millstadt) can treat spinal problems and provide neck and back pain relief to patients in Madison and St. Clair counties.

The Focus is on Preventive Care

CORE combines a friendly and professional staff that provides specialized back pain relief programs with each patients' diligent work and commitment to their own personal health: The chances for a full improvement are great.

The first step towards wellness is simple: Schedule a New Patient Consultation and exam at either the Edwardsville or Millstadt back pain relief clinic today. The staff will work one-on-one with the patient to select the best treatment plan for lifelong pain and symptom relief.

As spine doctors interested in whole body health, CORE is quite unlike a typical chiropractor. CORE doctors improve on average chiropractic care methods by applying a mix of safe and often natural corrective treatments that address a range of health problems such as asthma, allergies and other common ailments.

Call CORE Physical Medicine to schedule an appointment today: Edwardsville (618) 692-5555; Millstadt (618) (618) 476-6677.

The experienced Edwardsville and Millstadt back pain treatment team practices according to a wellness model of health care, which advocates the prevention of illness rather than simply treating symptoms. After identifying the root cause of a patient's illness, a personalized care plan is developed to help alleviate symptoms and ultimately improve the patient's overall health.

Achieve Health and Wellness Today

Most back pain cases are mechanical and their causes are physical. Meaning, the pain is completely treatable with advanced therapies such as: • Spinal Decompression • Class IV Laser Therapy • Outpatient Physical Therapy • Rehabilitation • Chiropractic Care • Massage Therapy

Once again, in response to a growing need, St. Paul’s constructed a brand new retirement community designed for residents to age in place. Meaning, the retirement apartments are part of a “Continuing Care Retirement Community.” If a resident should need nursing, shelter, rehab, memory or respite care, it is all contained within the premises. The St. Paul’s Home Board of Directors carefully examined how to best care for senior citizens today and in the future. After reviewing the results from a capital asset evaluation study and a market feasibility study, the board determined that it was cost prohibitive to renovate the old building, therefore plans moved forward to construct the new facility in its same location where it has been for nine decades. “I have always personally valued the care and service at St. Paul’s Senior Community,” said Belleville Mayor Mark Eckert. “I cannot thank enough the experienced and devoted staff, and those who have provided their time and efforts to St. Paul’s. Without such hard work, we may not have had the chance to add the new, up-to-date facility in our area. Keeping St. Paul’s Senior Community in Belleville not only keeps our elderly close to home, but it assures families that their loved ones are in good hands.”

St. Paul’s

This state-of-the-art facility has a skilled nursing section with short- and long-term rehab rooms, a memory care unit and sheltered care (assisted living). Private and companion rooms are available as well.

Offers A State-Of-The-Art Facility In Downtown Belleville

F

or 90 years, St. Paul’s Senior Community has been a leader in the field of caring for the aged in Southern Illinois and has provided one of the most reputable nursing homes and apartment communities in the country.

Opening its doors for the first time in 1926 with 13 residents, St. Paul’s has grown exponentially over the ensuing decades and as the need for more space and services continued, the community has always been there to lend a hand. Though the history of the facility is associated with the ministry of the church bearing the same name, St. Paul’s Senior Community is its own entity and serves the greater Belleville ecumenical community welcoming residents of any faith. Today, St. Paul’s Senior Community is the only faith-based, not-for-profit personcentered-care retirement community in the area that serves Medicare and Medicaid residents.

A key feature of the new facility is its division into six “neighborhoods.” Each neighborhood includes a kitchen and dining room, and a living room area, much like the homes to which residents are accustomed. The neighborhood concept is a new approach among nursing homes designed to foster a more home-like, resident-focused environment that encourages spontaneity and close relationships between staff and other residents. This concept also gives residents more choices and control over their lives. For more information about St. Paul's Senior Community, please call (618) 233-2095 or visit www.stpaulshome.com. The Senior Community is located at 1021 West E Street, Belleville.

Eckhardt graduated from McKendree College in 2003 with a degree in accounting. After working in the Accounting field, she transitioned to insurance and has been assisting clients with their health care needs as an independent agent since 2007. “When I first started I found myself working solely with seniors and just really fell in love with the notion of helping this particular demographic mainly because there are not many resources to navigate Medicare and there is also a lot of false and misleading information out there. I can help each client decide what planning best fits their needs: a supplement, advantage plan or drug plan,” she said. In business for 10 years now, Eckhardt said she likes to take an educational approach to everything so the client knows exactly what all their options are for enrollment. “And because I can contract with all insurance companies, I can truly find the best solution for each individual or group.”

Elite Retreat Is Celebrating 25 Anniversary th

C

elebrating 25 years in business, Elite Retreat Day Spa is located in a charming Belleville home that was renovated to provide separate spaces for the client’s privacy and relaxation. Opening in 1992, Elite Retreat began as a hair salon in the Lake Christine shopping center and later evolved into the Day Spa and Salon that it is today. Located at 400 Carlyle Avenue since 2005, the business has made changes throughout the year to follow the trends.

The Elite Retreat Day Spa and Salon is at 400 Carlyle Avenue and can be reached at (618) 233-8084; www.eliteretreatdayspa.org. The spa and salon was voted the 2016 People’s Choice of Southwest Illinois #1 Day Spa as well as the 2016 Belleville News Democrat #1 winner.

Owner Billie Jo Edwards said she believes her success is because of the staff’s unwavering commitment to excellent customer care and the addition of new services as often as possible. Of course, office manager Carrie Kelly keeps things in order. “I don’t know what I’d do without Carrie,” Edwards said. “She is the backbone of this place!” The menu of services is very thorough and includes many weekday specials such as the “Huge Student Discount” every Tuesday; the Fall Mani/Pedi Special also every Tuesday; the weekday massage special just $50 for 55 minutes; and Peel Day every Thursday this Fall. During the month of October, a pink hair extension will be offered for just $5 and all proceeds will go to Making Strides For Cancer. Some new additions to the spa and salon are Dream Catchers hair extensions and eyebrow/ eyelash tinting. “We have also added aromatherapy to our massage sessions,” she said. And don’t miss out on all the fun accessories like purses, scarves, jewelry, sunglasses, hats and hair/skin products in the front room. Gift certificates are always available. Wedding parties are a specialty as well at Elite Retreat. “We can do hair design while applying the makeup which saves a bunch of time,” she said. For the bride, she suggests airbrush makeup, as the main benefits are not worrying about makeup rubbing off on to clothes and not having to reapply for up to 20 hours. “It’s not heavy and really feels like air.” Application for full makeup only requires about 45 minutes – the foundation itself only takes 15 minutes. “And we custom blend the colors for a perfect match,” she said. “The salon can accommodate small and large parties – everyone loves our Mimosas!”

FRUSTRATED WITH REPORT CARDS? symptoms which indicates a child could have a vision problem, including:

W

hether your child works very hard and still gets a poor report card, or your child avoids reading and homework as much as possible, Unger Eye Care may be able to help. When a child complains that he can’t see the board, your immediate thought is to schedule an eye exam. But when your child brings home a poor report card, you should also consider that a sign to schedule an eye exam.

• Problems with tracking • Poor comprehension and attention span • Loses place while reading • Points to words while reading • Avoids close work such as reading • Reverses letters or words in reading and writing • Homework takes FOREVER when it shouldn’t

If your child has any of these issues, he or she may have an undiagnosed vision problem that is interfering with academic success. For more information on vision and learning, please call (618) 667-2020.

Why an eye exam? When a child struggles with reading and nothing seems to help consistently, it is a sign that a vision problem is underlying your child’s difficulties. Does your child love being read to, but hates to read? Is he or she an “auditory learner?” These are signs of a vision problem. The Learning Disabilities Association of America says that when you find a child who is struggling with learning you should check for vision and hearing problems. Unfortunately, most people incorrectly assume there is nothing wrong with a child’s vision if he or she can see “20/20.” Dr. Tom Unger, optometrist with an office in Troy, said, “If you have a child who is struggling with reading and schoolwork it is vital you understand that being able to see the letters on the eye chart is just one of over 20 visual skills critical to reading and learning.” Children do not know how they are supposed to see so they rarely complain when they have difficulty seeing the words on the page. Therefore it becomes critical that you are aware of some of the most obvious

From STRUGGLING...To SUCCESS! 1 out of 4 children struggle with reading and learning because of undiagnosed vision problems.

Does Your Child... • Dislike reading? • Skip or reread lines? • Prefer to be read to? • Lose place when reading?

• Have trouble remembering what has been read? • Have difficulty paying attention? ADD/ADHD?

• Make numbers/letter reversals? • Have reading /homework take longer than it should?

ELIMINATE DOUBT! If your child has any of the above symptoms, he or she may have a 100% correctable vision-based learning

problem. Children who once struggled go from failure to success when these vision problems are treated. Call us today to schedule a

Developmental Vision Evaluation.

Find The Best Selection Of The Newest Wig Styles At Merle Norman-Fairview Norman Fairview Heights

AFTER

D

uring Breast Cancer Awareness month, Merle Norman Cosmetics and Wigs in Fairview Heights would like to highlight their expertise in hair replacement needs. Employees have received extensive education in alternative hair from both Jon Renau and HairUWear, premier wig companies in the U.S. While there are over 100 wigs in stock to choose from, if they don't have what the customer is looking for, they will do their best to find it. Photos on this page are from the new collections of Jon Renau and HairUWear. Wigs are not just for those who have lost their hair to cancer treatment or other conditions. Plenty of people wear wigs, hairpieces or extensions just because they love the way they look. Today's wigs are so natural looking, so unlike the wigs of 20 years ago, that many women wear them simply for the convenience of instantly stylish hair. A wig is perfect for vacation, a big event such as a wedding or just to be different. Whatever the reason, Merle Norman has you covered. The professionals at Merle Norman have advice and tips for wearing, styling and caring for a new wig. In fact, wigs and other hairpieces may need alterations for a proper fit: Cutting and styling them specific to each unique face shape is very common. Wig stylists take the stress out of choosing the perfect piece to suit all needs and lifestyles.

If hair loss includes eyebrows, the staff can take care of that, too, with the new Brow Sculpting Pencil. It comes in five shades, has a uniquely shaped tip that can do precise hair-like strokes as well as fill in larger areas. It also has a built in brow brush and sharpener. Of course, Merle Norman is mostly known for excellent makeup and skincare products. “Merle Norman is not your grandma’s makeup any more,” said Fudge, “and after 85 years in business – we know what we’re doing!” Merle Norman Cosmetics is at 525 Lincoln Highway Suite #6 in Fairview Heights; (618) 624-FACE (3223). Stop by for a free, personalized facial and consultation.

In addition, many customers are surprised to find such a wide assortment of integrative pieces like Hair Toppers (see before and after photos at top), which offer solutions for those experiencing minimal to advanced stages of hair loss. “If you are experiencing hair loss, please know that you are not alone,” said Sabrina Fudge, owner of Merlen Norman-Fairview Heights. “We have helped many women just like you. Our collection of beautiful, natural-looking wigs and hairpieces are the preferred choice thanks to their exceptional comfort, quality and modern styling.”

Becky Lopez, Brooklynn McDade and Sabrina Fudge are wearing new wig styles from Jon Renau.

Jack Schmitt Chevrolet Is Making Strides For Cancer The staff of Jack Schmitt Chevrolet in O’Fallon enjoys supporting the community in every way possible.

“No one should have to go through the toughest battle of their lives alone,” said Executive Manager Kathy Federico. “That’s why we make every effort to support the fight against breast cancer through Making Strides Against Breast Cancer. “We’ve had various events to raise money for breast cancer research in the past, and we don’t plan on cutting corners in the future.”

Here are just a few of their efforts: St. Clair County American Cancer Society

“I serve on the St. Clair County American Cancer Society Leadership board along with community leaders of all backgrounds,” she said. “Our goal is to improve the quality of care for cancer patients in St. Clair County.”

Community Events

The Wine and Witches Sweeping Away Cancer is hosted by the American Cancer Society and is from 7 to 10 p.m. on October 6 at The Weingarten this year. This event is taking the place of a Metro East Making Strides Against Cancer Walk. The Halloween theme certainly drew a crowd last year and this year’s event is gaining momentum. The funds raised provide programs and services in St. Clair County, including free wigs, free transportation for treatment, free lodging during treatment, clinical trials and more.

Of course, a real head turner is the pink Camaro that makes appearances and different events around the area. “The pink Camaro has raised awareness of Making Strides Against Breast Cancer all across the St Louis metro area,” Federico said. The dealership - along with other Chevrolet dealerships - also participates in the ACS Road To Recovery program that provides transportation to and from treatment for people with cancer who do not have a ride or are unable to drive themselves. Please call (800) 227-2345 to schedule your ride. Jack Schmitt Chevrolet is located at 127 Regency Park in O’Fallon, (618) 628-2500, www.jackschmitt.com.

Are You Or Your Child Scared Of Dogs? Are You Afraid You’ll Get Bit? For many people, the mutually rewarding relationship afforded by a furry companion is a wonderful way of life. Yet, there are many who suffer from an extreme fear of dogs, which is called cynophobia and is often caused by a traumatic encounter with a dog or because of a lack of early, positive exposure to them.

Here are a few ways to get over this fear provided by Lucky Dog Barks and Recreation in Swansea: 1. Keep the commotion to a minimum. Dogs really do not like a lot of noise or a lot of people, especially new people, in their homes. During family gatherings, keep your furry friends in the quietest part of the house or send to another house – or doggy daycare! 2. When being introduced to a dog, let him come to you. Put your hand out, slowly, and let him sniff it. 3. If a dog starts growling, do not run away. Dogs love to chase. Instead of running, back away slowly. 4. Dogs don’t like being chased either; so don’t run toward or after a dog.

5. Many dogs don’t like being hugged or kissed. If a dog likes hugs, don’t squeeze too tight. 6. Do not try to touch or take away the dog’s toys, food or bones. Some dogs are territorial about their things and will snap at a hand trying to touch them. If a little help is necessary, Lucky Dog offers daycare, boarding and pet sitting. They cater to each dog's personality and daily routine so the owners can be sure their dog is in good hands. Stop in; meet the team and tour the large, clean facility. Lucky Dog Barks and Recreation is at 129 Corporate Drive in Swansea; (618) 277-2275 (BARK); email swansea@luckydogbarks.com and visit luckydogbarks.com.

Full Circle Auto Service

Celebrates 25 Years In Business

A

fter traveling the world for many years in the United States Air Force, Carlos Perez, at right, planted roots and opened a carburetor shop in O’Fallon, Ill. 25 years ago. His first shop was the old Continental Bus Depot station on the corner of Lincoln and State Street. It is now Cross Fit Voyage. After a few months at that location, he found another spot on Highway 50 located behind what used to be JD Nicks, and later Super Smokers. While at that location, he expanded the carburetor business by first going to the local racetracks. As that business grew, he expanded out to state tracks such as Memphis and Indianapolis Raceways. Although the trips out of town were profitable, it was impacting the local customer base. At that point he changed the business plan from servicing carbureted racing vehicles to more of the family owned vehicles. This was due to the changing technology of today’s vehicles. “We drew a circle and divided it into several wedges for each of our service goals. To achieve those goals, we identified the needed expertise, training and equipment for engine repair, transmissions and transaxles, drive train and axles, steering and suspension, brakes, electrical and electronic systems, heating and air conditioning, and engine performance. After completing each service goal, we felt that we had come full circle, hence the name Full Circle Auto Service,” according to Perez. Along with the name change, they acquired more tools, equipment and training of personnel. They grew from three to nine bays. He stayed at the Highway 50 location for almost 13 years.

Now in their present location at 510 South Lincoln Avenue, they have a mix of customers ranging from O’Fallon and surrounding community families, active duty military, retired military personnel and civil service employees. Full Circle Auto Service is a one-stop auto repair business. Services range from basic fluid changes to the more complex computer diagnosis of vehicles. Full Circle Auto Service employs Automotive Service Excellence Master Certified Technicians with a combined experience of over 50 years. “We are here to serve you!
