From Stilettos to Steel-Toed Boots, New Owner Of Butler Seeks To Be A Local One-Stop Shop

GREATER ST. LOUIS A BUTLER HOME IMPROVEMENT COMPANY

here’s a passion within Claudia Russell, owner of Butler Home Improvement, to become the one-stop shop for all things related to home improvement – from construction “to the little things that people need help with around the house,” she said.

T

A symbol of Butler Homes has always been the white glove: meaning the staff seeks to provide white glove service on any project from the installation of a deck, enclosing a patio or building a sunroom. Interior remodels include kitchens and bathrooms, and more.

Locally as well as woman owned, Butler Home Improvement is an independently operated interior and exterior remodeling company that has been providing homeowners with high-quality home improvement services for over two decades in the Metro East and St. Louis areas.

“I always tell my team that customers come to us with a need and we can help with a quality product and affordable pricing,” Russell said. “Our team wants to earn our customers’ business. We show up when we say we will, build trust, deliver quality work and always strive to do the right thing. If my team members leave work every day knowing they gave 150 percent, then they had a great day!”

“Our promise to clients is to provide care, choice and craftsmanship when performing remodeling services,” Russell said. “We offer hassle-free quotes, financing options and double the labor warranty of our competitors.” Enjoying a long-time corporate – and very successful - career, Russell saw an opportunity with Butler to take an already established, reputable company and expand it into something that would be meaningful to her, her friends and family. “All those years of working long hours, some away from home, I had to rely on contractors to get personal projects taken care of and my friends were always in the same predicament. Then, I got taken to the cleaners by one company in particular and that’s when I realized there is a true need for a local, reliable and honest home improvement business in the area.” When she saw that Butler Home Improvement was for sale, Russell thought, “Well if you don’t believe in you, no one else is going to,” and she jumped at the chance with the goal to make a good company even better. “First thing I did was take everything from all manual to all technology so we are all on the same page, all the time. We are adding full-time employees and so far we are up 300% in business this year! I have some amazing talent working with me, which has been a huge asset for me, too.”The company has also moved into the Missouri market, has added a handyman division and will be adding a real estate division soon.

Believing in giving back, Russell encourages her staff to volunteer in the community. “I give them time to participate in group volunteer events every year plus additional time for a project of their choosing. At the end of the day – it’s just like the old cliché – we treat people the way you want to be treated,” she said. Butler Home Improvement has an office at 906 Vandalia in Collinsville and can be reached at (618) 344-7073 or (314) 374-9656. Visit the web site at butlerhomeimprovement.com.

The Framery Can Create A Memorable Gift For Every Occasion

W

hat does every Mother want for Mother’s Day? She wants a framed photo of her precious family of course. Preserving memories is a specialty of Angie Hutchison’s, owner of The Framery, and her charming shop is full of such beautiful examples. What began as a part-time job 30 years ago has become a lifetime career as the custom framer in Belleville. The Framery has been a mainstay in the area and is currently at 6020 W. Main Street “where the action is,” Hutchison said. “If you are going to trust someone with a piece of your family’s history or something equally as special, why not go to a person with over 30 years experience. I really love family heirlooms and creating specially framed pieces for special occasions like Mother’s day, graduation, weddings – there are so many fun things I can do,” she said. “I feel like custom framing is becoming a lost art as ‘big box’ stores offer a selection of ready-made frames. But you cannot find unique shapes and sizes unless you seek the help of a custom framer – and that’s where I come in.” With her exceptional creativity and the knowledge of a craftsman, Hutchison can offer all manner of frames, shadow boxes, multiple mat openings, flag cases, etc. because she builds it from scratch in her workshop that is right on the premises. She also enjoys refinishing older and antique frames, and always likes a challenge like large pieces of art. The most unusual thing she ever framed was a scorpion! “It was fun – we do things like butterflies, coins, team jerseys, and of course, lots of Cardinals and Blues items,” she said. The shop itself has many unique features including the gorgeous stained glass door (pictured here) that leads in to her workshop area. “That door is original to the building and I just loved it so much that I created a ‘stage-like’ setting for it with stone façade and stairs,” she said. Visitors can also view the myriad of frame choices and examples of her work in the shop. Please visit The Framery at 6020 W. Main St. in Belleville and call (618) 397-0443 for more information. s the oldest pharmacies in Mascoutah and Millstadt – and for Dauber's in Mascoutah it's the oldest in the entire area - Dauber Pharmacy and Millstadt Pharmacy have grown from small, neighborhood drugstores to modern pharmacies offering traditional prescription services, friendly service and most recently, beautiful clothing and accessory collections perfect for that special Mother's Day gift. Both pharmacies have these fabulous gift stores with pretty clothing such as flowing wraps and tunics, scarves and accessories including jewelry, hats, shoes and purses. In fact, complete outfits are available in lovely spring colors for the season. These shops are among the Metro East's best-kept secrets. Each pharmacy also carries a large selection of greeting cards and wrappings – a Hallmark Gold Crown store is located in the Mascoutah store – and even school supplies and some household items to name just a few of their vast inventory of fun and practical products plus a robust section of $1 items. In fact, the motto at the two stores is: “There’s always something happening in our pharmacies,” said owner Todd Evers. “But first and foremost, we are a pharmacy at both locations.” “When you call us, you get a real person in the pharmacy right away and a refill transaction will be in less than a minute,” he said. “You won’t ever go through the ‘phone tree.’ Customers will talk with Pharmacists Brian Blair in Millstadt and Jessi Whitworth in Mascoutah.”

The two pharmacies offer fair prices for everyone,” Evers continued. “Don’t assume the big chains have the lowest prescription prices: Many times the independent pharmacy will have the best price because their overhead is so much lower.” To transfer prescriptions to one of these pharmacies, “All you have to do is bring in your bottles and insurance card” and they will take it from there. When the prescription is ready, the customer can receive a text or email if they sign up for that service. The two locations offer an exciting, updated web site that gives the customer better functionality and is geared to the mobile society that “we have become.” The web sites for both are very thorough with information on services provided including prescription and over-the-counter medications, a complete encyclopedia of medications, a Health News page with updated articles plus a page to help customers download the pharmacy phone app to make refilling prescriptions as fast as touching the screen. Check out the "25% OFF the Outfit of the Week" posted on Facebook every Friday morning. Dauber Pharmacy is located at 16 E. Main St. in Mascoutah, (618) 566-8521; www.dauberpharmacy. com. The Millstadt Pharmacy is at 120 W. Washington Street, (618) 476-1701; www.millstadtpharmacy.com.

Worried Your Child Will Be Left Behind? • Find it harder to read at the end of the day than in the morning? • Skip words or repeat lines when reading out loud to you? • Reverse letters like b's into d's when reading? • Have a short attention span?

If your child has any of the above symptoms, he or she may have a fully correctable vision problem. Please don’t assume your child is not at risk because the results of the last vision screening came through OK. To be sure your child has all the visual skills required for reading and learning, schedule a developmental vision evaluation (this is different than a regular eye exam and is typically performed by a Developmental Optometrist).

A

re you concerned about whether or not your child will be left behind? Are ou worried he or she might need to attend Summer school? All too often a child is left back with the hope that the second time through a light bulb will suddenly go off. Unfortunately, that doesn’t always work. Following is an important message for parents.

If a vision problem is at the root of your child’s difficulties, there is hope that there will be a positive end to all the struggling. Schedule a developmental vision evaluation for your child today. Taking action today could make next school year much easier for everyone. For a more in-depth symptom checklist or more information about the critical link between vision and learning, please visit www.ungereyecare.com, or call (618) 667-2020.

When a child is struggling with schoolwork - despite all best attempts to help - there is a strong possibility that your child may be struggling with a vision problem. Before you say, “Not my child, he has perfect vision,” please keep reading. As soon as parents and educators hear that a child can see 20/20, they assume the child has “perfect vision,” which couldn’t be further from the truth. All it means is your child can see the size of letters that are supposed to be seen from a distance of 20 feet. This is only ONE of over 15 visual skills critical to reading and learning. According to Dr. Thomas Unger, a developmental optometrist in Troy , “If a child is missing even one of these visual skills, reading and learning can become difficult. If a child is missing more, reading can be nearly impossible.” If your child struggles with reading, you need to know the symptoms of a vision problem because children rarely tell their parents they are having trouble seeing. Here are some of the more common symptoms.

Does your child:

• Get frustrated when trying to read or do homework? • Take much longer doing his/her homework than it should? • Have a “tracking” problem? • Have trouble making out words? • “Forget” to bring homework assignments home?

From STRUGGLING...To SUCCESS! 1 out of 4 children struggle with reading and learning because of undiagnosed vision problems.

Does Your Child... • Dislike reading? • Skip or reread lines? • Prefer to be read to? • Lose place when reading?

• Have trouble remembering what has been read? • Have difficulty paying attention? ADD/ADHD?

• Make numbers/letter reversals? • Have reading /homework take longer than it should?

ELIMINATE DOUBT! If your child has any of the above symptoms, he or she may have a 100% correctable vision-based learning

problem. Children who once struggled go from failure to success when these vision problems are treated. Call us today to schedule a

Developmental Vision Evaluation.

Introducing!

Little Peek Boutique A

Can Give You A Virtual HD View Of Your Unborn Baby

labor and delivery nurse for 18 years, Melissa Thurlow had the opportunity to view a Virtual HD Sonogram last October and knew it would change her life as well as many others who used this most up-to-date technology. “When I saw it, I thought, ‘Wow! that is spectacular! I’m going to do that – I’m going to buy one of those machines and offer it here in the Metro East.’” Always keeping up with technology throughout her career, Thurlow wanted to combine her years of experience with her own business doing what she loves. “We will perform a one-of-a-kind, elective Virtual HD ultrasound in studio, in home and/or at baby shower locations. People will be amazed with the innovative technology that surpasses any competition. With this Virtual HD, parents can see exactly what their little one really looks like using 3D viewing and motion.” Just in time for Mother’s Day, Little Peek Boutique will make its debut in O’Fallon complete with a very special Baby Boutique offering only “Made in the USA” hand crafted baby products such as booties, baby clothing and accessories, and maternity items. “I have met with several dozen local artists who are going to make unique products to sell in my

store,” she said. "Maternity and newborn photography specials will be available through Growing Frames Photography as well." When physicians began hearing about Little Peek, they said to her, “Ok, here’s what else we need – we need a place for pregnancy massages.” Thus, Little Peek Boutique is also offering massage for expectant mothers using a custom massage table designed to accommodate their special condition. Prenatal massages help reduce stress, decrease swelling and ease heartburn. Once the baby is born, Thurlow’s studio is collaborating with Holistic Beginnings to offer lessons on how to perform infant massage on their babies and providing lactation support. According to Parents magazine, researchers are discovering that baby massage may promote better sleeping, relieve colic and perhaps even enhance an infant's immune system, motor skills and intellectual development. Born and raised in O’Fallon, Thurlow’s Little Peek Boutique is located in the heart of her hometown at 701 South Lincoln Avenue. DEMYSTIFYING DEREGULATION

S

imply put, energy deregulation is about giving the consumer and business owner a choice and ultimately saving money on power consumption. The easiest example of deregulation and regulation is on the actual power bill. Take a look at 1. the delivery charge and 2. the supply charge. Delivery is regulated because the cost of replacing the actual infrastructure such as poles, lines, etc. at this point in time would be astronomical. However, that is not the case with supply. Supply of the commodity can come from any energy company registered in the state as an REP (registered electric supplier). Energy deregulation brings competition into the market which generally drives prices down. This can bring a significant amount of savings for the consumer but literally save thousands of dollars for business owners.

“Since most suppliers pick up the fee it doesn’t cost anything to save money,” said Mike Grimes, president of commercial Energy Consultants. “For example, I worked with a bar owner who was already in arrears with the incumbent utility. She was facing summer pricing (20% higher) and was about to close the bar. Solution: deregulate. The owner picked up a fixed price 30% lower than the incumbent utilities and was able to keep the bar open.” “Customers are free to work directly with a supplier by doing their own research. But the problem here is that there are 40-plus suppliers,” Grimes said. “Are you going to interview them all to find the best supplier? Do you have the time? Are you well versed in matters of energy deregulation? Be careful, some suppliers take advantage of the uninformed or the chosen company might not be financially stable.” “I recommend using a consultant such as Commercial Energy Consultants (CEC) that has been working with energy deregulation for the last five years. We have 750 million kilowatts under contract and over 4500 client relationships,” he continued. “Use a consultant because we have the knowledge to garner the lowest bid from all available suppliers. The consultant regularly contacts suppliers, asks for bids on the consumer’s particular residential/commercial need and delivers the lowest bid. This process takes the hassle out of working directly with the supplier.” Recently Grimes met with a busy school administrator who had been given the task to deregulate. She had received a couple solicitations in the mail and talked to one supplier but realized there are more than 20 suppliers approved by her state. “She called my company and hired us to find the supplier. It took about a week and didn’t cost the school a penny. CEC delivered the low bid and saved the school thousands of dollars each month,” he said. For more information, please call Mike Grimes at Commercial Energy Consultants at (877) 212-1400 or email mike@trycec.com.

Rockin’ And Rollin’ In Two New Locations:

Downtown O’Fallon And Edwardsville

B

ike Surgeon has been established as the St. Louis Metro Area’s premiere bike shop for nearly nine years now. Formerly located in the Green Mount Crossing shopping center, Bike Surgeon has not only recently moved its Headquarters to downtown O’Fallon, but has also opened a second location in Edwardsville along the MCT Trails. The new location for Bike Surgeon HQ opened its doors February 1. Growing concerns about increased traffic in the Green Mount shopping center and the associated feeder roads prompted the move. The new Bike Surgeon HQ allows for much safer riding to and from the shop for multiple weekly group rides. It’s also conveniently located to several other locally owned businesses such as Sweet Katie Bee’s, Shooters, Hemingway’s and Peel - all perfect for postride food and drink. Bike Surgeon HQ is also larger than its previous location allowing for more social and retail space, and it is full of character. Originally an Oldsmobile dealership and service station, the new building has much more personality then the “vanilla box” they were previously in. While the outside looks dramatically different, the inside keeps all of the barn wood, stone work and metal sculptures that give the shop that modern rustic/modern vibe inside for which they are famous. Swing in and check out the new Bike Surgeon HQ location at 201 East State Street in beautiful Downtown O’Fallon. The Outpost, Bike Surgeon’s second location in the Metro East, is a boutiquesized shop in Edwardsville and is a co-location with First to the Finish running store. “We are excited to bring our fun-loving focus on customer service to the Madison County market," said Surgeon co-owner Jon Greenstreet. "That service combined with our experience in 'Fit, Fix and Fun' for all things bike has been wildly successful for us in the Shiloh/O’Fallon market; and we are seeing the same response here in Edwardsville.”

tion.” A new offering to the market - exclusively at the Bike Surgeon Outpost - is a full bike rental fleet. With options from most of their brands, they have comfort bikes, hybrids, MTB’s and road bikes all available for daily or longer rentals. So, get in on the fun even if you don’t have your own bike and come experience the trails on some of the latest the industry has to offer. Rates start as low as $25! While there have certainly been a lot of recent exciting changes for Bike Surgeon, one thing remains the same, Bike Surgeon’s ongoing significant focus on Fit, Fix and Fun. One of the most important parts of riding a bicycle is making sure the bike is fit properly to the rider. Boulder Center for Sports Medicine trained fit technicians are available at both locations to provide in-depth fit services. These fit services are included with the purchase of every new bike and available to all customers whether or not the bike was purchased from Bike Surgeon. Speaking of service, Bike Surgeon also offers their regionally famous 24-hourturn-around scheduled repair services at both locations. Bike Surgeon also stocks some of the best bike brands in the industry, including: Specialized, Cervelo, Colnago, Electra, Niner and Salsa. Bike Surgeon HQ offers group road rides Tuesday evenings and Saturday mornings while the Outpost hosts a mountain ride Wednesday evening and a road/MCT trail ride Saturday morning. Visit bikesurgeon.com or the Facebook page (facebook.com/bikesurgeon) for further details.

The Outpost, which opened in November, provides an extra-large parking lot with direct access to the Madison County Trail Network with a trail spur from the front door of the shop right on to Goshen Trail. All MCT Trail users are welcome to park and hit the trail, or stop in for water, nutrition, a quick fix or to just hangout and chat. “We are all super excited about this trail access ... it was one of the biggest things we were looking for in an Edwardsville loca-

Proceeds will benefit the local Glen-Ed Pantry (www. glenedpantry.org).

THE WSIE STORY: THE NEXT CHAPTER

W

SIE radio celebrated in 46th anniversary last September and completed a transition which had begun months earlier. For much of its rich history, WSIE was known as The Jazz Station. But economic hard times brought about, in part, by the budget crisis in Illinois forced the hand of the station license holders: the Southern Illinois University system. The radio station, already operating with a staff of two full-time professionals and a handful of student workers, was declared to be a “tier-three operation.” Simply put, the radio station had to become self-sustaining or face elimination. In February 2016, the evolution of the station began with the addition of blues to the straight-ahead jazz music. The jazz was also carefully selected to be more melodic in nature. The use of the term The Jazz Station was stopped with liners and other identifiers touting a rich blend of music. Over the spring of 2016, a trio of SIUE graduate students conducted a research project to assist in “rebranding” the radio station. Given the overall musical plan for the 50-thousand watt FM Radio station, the students selected “the Sound” as the new brand. In August 2016, the new brand was officially launched with a blend of jazz, smooth jazz, blues and R&B filling the airwaves. WSIE is also delivered online thanks to an online stream which provides listeners across the world with the Sound. Coupled with the rebranding, was a concerted effort to raise the money necessary to enable the station to pay its own way. Underwriters and donors alike have responded positively to the

change in format and brand. Thanks to the stream, donations have come to the station from as far away as Mexico City, California, New York and cities, and states, in between. AFTER

The number of businesses interested in supporting WSIE has also grown along with the station’s audience. Recently, WSIE entered into an agreement with the National Blues Museum in St. Louis. 88-7 the Sound is now the radio sponsor for the Howlin’ Friday Night concert series at the Museum every Friday night. This spring 2017, the radio station also applied for and received a grant from the Meridian Society, a women’s philanthropic organization affiliated with SIUE. The grant was used to cover the cost of an RDS Encoder. The encoder will deliver songs and artists in formation to any RDS equipped radio. Station director Steve Jankowski says this will enable listeners to learn more about the rich blend of music being broadcast on the radio station. Jankowski stresses the station has a distance yet to travel, but the format change has made the road ahead far less bumpy. The station is also staffed with a strong group of student and volunteer announcers who have endeared themselves to the audience. That, Jankowski adds, provides the students with a great learning experience and the audience with a rich listening experience. Jankowski encourages local business owners who would like to promote their business, while supporting WSIE, to contact him regarding underwriting. Jankowski can be reached by phone at 618-650-3607 or via email at stejank@siue.edu.
