As business owners, Kristen M. Jacobs, M.D. and Robert L. Wise, D.C. understand the importance of making family their #1 priority!

Relaxation, Health and Beauty for All Mothers!

M

other’s Day is upon us – that time of year to celebrate all Moms in our lives: soon-to-be-Moms, new Moms, not-so-new Moms, Stepmothers, Mother-in-laws, Grandmothers and Moms that act like your mom even though they aren’t. The owner of Ooh La La, Kristen M. Jacobs, M.D., is the mother of two boys: Jack, 10, and Mikey, 9. She perfectly understands busy schedules with little downtime. Don’t waste precious time! Look no further than the “goto” physician for aesthetic care. Her advanced training, extensive knowledge and personal experience with all of Ooh La La’s products and services truly set her apart from all the rest. A knowledgeable, professional team of nurses and aestheticians work along-side Dr. Jacobs; all of whom have extensive training in skin rejuvenation treatments like Chemical Peels, Microdermabrasion, Dermaplaning, Facials, Massage, Microcurrent, as well as advanced procedures like Laser Treatments and Sclerotherapy. Ooh La La understands that Moms need to be pampered, and each Mom has different needs.

Moms-to-Be: The focus is that little bun in the oven. In order to ensure that bundle is healthy, Mom needs to be healthy as well. So this is no time to put “well-being” on the back burner. Many people might advise a pregnant woman to shy away from the Spa, but there are actually plenty of non-invasive services and skin care products that are appropriate for Moms-to-Be. Facials and Massage, performed by a specially trained therapist at Ooh La La, are very soothing to Mom’s changing skin. You can also keep your skin in tip-top shape with SkinMedica’s Lytera Skin Brightening Complex and the Clarisonic Cleansing Brush. New Moms: As a new Mom rushes around tending to the new baby, she should make sure to schedule personal time. With the actual pregnancy past, Ooh La La can get a bit more aggressive with her skin, venturing into Chemical Peels and Laser Treatments to enhance that “new mom glow.” In addition she might want to spring back into pre-baby clothes with a Medically-Supervised Weight Management Program and the CoolSculpt Body Contouring.

6 | Marketplace Magazine | Spring Issue 2013 | marketplacemagazineonline.com

Seasoned Moms: Though beyond the diaper bag, a “seasoned” Mom is still a special Mother and deserves major kudos for her hard work. It’s time she focuses on herself. Let’s rejuvenate those “Mommy lines” with a little Botox and Juvederm. Mom’s especially love the Limelight Treatment (reduce redness and pigmentation) and the Laser Genesis (to improve skin texture, acne scarring, and stimulate new collagen). Or, if she is ready to truly reveal improved skin, then go for Ooh La La’s Pearl Resurfacing Treatment.

Kristen M. Jacobs, M.D. and her husband, Robert L. Wise, D.C., share a light-hearted sports debate with their boys, Jack and Mikey.

What woman doesn’t want to look and feel like a “HOT MAMA,” right? If you are struggling with things like fatigue, cravings and excess weight it’s challenging to feel good, let alone look good. Dr. Robert Wise (Dr. Jacobs’ husband) specializes in natural ways to enhance health such as Nutritional Counseling, Weight Loss, Acupuncture and Auriculotherapy. For the Mom who might want it all, a gift certificate is the perfect option. And if she needs a little guidance (Moms can’t possibly know EVERYTHING), then Ooh La La is here to help. Consultations are available so Mom receives all the attention she deserves. Call Ooh La La Spa, Anti-Aging and Wellness at 618-288-9117 to schedule a Complimentary Skin Consultation. Visit the NEW website at OohLaLaWellness.com. The 12,000-square-foot Spa and Wellness Clinic is located at 110 Cottonwood Road in Glen Carbon. Best wishes for a very Happy Mother's Day!

Worried Your Child Will Be Left Behind? • Find it harder to read at the end of the day than in the morning? • Skip words or repeat lines when reading out loud to you? • Reverse letters like b's into d's when reading? • Have a short attention span?

A

re you concerned about whether or not your child will be left behind or need to attend summer school? All too often a child is left back with the hope that the second time through a light bulb will suddenly go off. Unfortunately, that doesn’t always work. Following is an important message for parents. When a child is struggling with schoolwork and despite all best attempts to help, nothing seems to be making a significant improvement in academic performance, there is a strong possibility that your child may be struggling with a vision problem. Before you say, “Not my child, he has perfect vision,” please keep reading. As soon as parents and educators hear that a child can see 20/20, they assume that means the child has “perfect vision” and that couldn’t be further from the truth. All it means is that your child can see the size of letters that are supposed to be seen from a distance of 20 feet. This is only ONE of over 15 visual skills critical to reading and learning. According to Dr. Thomas Unger, a developmental optometrist in Troy, “If a child is missing even one of these visual skills, reading and learning can become difficult. If a child is missing more, reading can be nearly impossible.” If your child struggles with reading you need to know the symptoms of a vision problem because children rarely tell their parents they are having trouble seeing. Here are some of the more common symptoms, does your child: • Get frustrated when trying to read or do homework? • Take much longer doing his/her homework than it should? • Have a “tracking” problem? • Have trouble making out words? • “Forget” to bring homework assignments home?

If your child has any of the above symptoms, he or she may have a fully correctable vision problem. Please don’t assume that because the results of the last vision screening came out OK, that your child is not at risk. To be sure your child has all the visual skills required for reading and learning, schedule a developmental vision evaluation (this is different than a regular eye exam and is typically performed by a Developmental Optometrist). If a vision problem is at the root of your child’s difficulties there is hope that there will be a positive end to all the struggling. Schedule a developmental vision evaluation for your child today. Taking action today could make next school year much easier for everyone. For a more in-depth symptom checklist or more information about the critical link between vision and learning, please visit www.ungereyecare. com or call the office at (618) 667-2020.

From STRUGGLING... 1 out of 4 children struggle with reading and learning because of undiagnosed vision problems.

Does Your Child... • Dislike reading? • Skip or reread lines? • Prefer to be read to? • Lose place when reading?

• Have trouble remembering what has been read? • Have difficulty paying attention? ADD/ADHD? • Make number/letter reversals such as “b” and “d”? • Have reading and homework take longer than it should?

...to SUCCESS! EliminatE Doubt!

If your child has any of the above symptoms, he or she may have a 100% correctable vision-based learning problem. Children who once struggled go from failure to success when these vision problems are treated. Call us today to schedule a Developmental Vision Evaluation.

merle norman: it’s not your grandmother's make-up... It's an icon in skin care for both women and men of all ages

B

orn with only one skin, it’s important to take good care of it. Think of your skin as if it were the only piece of clothing to protect yourself from the world. During the aging process, the skin is constantly exposed to environmental elements, hormonal changes, medication or chronic illness that dehydrate it. Not only does Merle Norman offer a myriad of products for women of all ages to rehydrate, but they have a men’s skin care line as well. “My brother, a railroad man, finally tried the men's skin care line and absolutely LOVED it, said owner Sabrina Fudge, Merle Norman-Fairview Heights. “He could not believe the difference he saw in his face.”

In addition, “Our staff recently received specialized in-house training to add updated continuous care to our wig clientele. When a woman is undergoing treatment for cancer, we pride ourselves in caring about them as a person, not just a wig patron,” she said. “We may cry, we may laugh, but when it's all said and done our customer leaves feeling satisfied knowing that she can carry on as usual, even without her own hair.” As Brooklynn would tell you, "Wigs are not just for people experiencing hair loss! I find that wearing a wig is a freedom of expression for me. It's fun to try new styles, lengths and colors that I would never bravely style my own hair with,” she said. “I am also really keen on the idea of not having to spend an hour to do my hair each morning." The shop carries in stock over 150 wigs.

Chiropractice Office Treats Patients From The “Womb To The Tomb” Lend Your Support To The Make-A-Wish Foundation

Dr. Rice

Dr. Keim Shiloh Chiropractic opened its doors in 2006 and in just 2.5 years went from 1,500 square feet to 3,000, has two doctors now on staff and is currently hoping to hire the ninth employee. They are the only chiropractic office within the city limits of Shiloh. Dr. Robert Rice, founder, and hometown boy Dr. Nicholas Keim, attribute their success to their overall business philosophy. “Our mission is to assist our patients from ‘womb to tomb’ in the achievement of total wellness without the prescription of medication or the administration of surgery,” said Dr. Rice. “We offer chiropractic, physiological therapies and massage for people of all ages.”

One patient in particular said, “No matter how I feel when I arrive at Shiloh Chiropractic, I always leave feeling upbeat! In addition to either keeping my body moving correctly on a regular basis, or correcting something temporarily out of whack, this office is full of positive energy and attitude, which is contagious.” “We recognize and respect that under normal circumstance, the human body has the ability to self-heal and self-regulate,” said Dr. Keim. “We appreciate that Chiropractic's role in this process is to remove the interferences that slow down or stop the body's abilities to heal and regulate."

Patients find the brightly appointed office is both welcoming and calming, and lends to the overall pleasant experience they are seeking while looking for help to end their pain.

In addition, the staff promotes the importance of healthy eating, proper exercise, a functional skeletal frame, a positive mental attitude and well-balanced social interaction. “The whole body is greater than its parts,” Dr. Rice said.

The practice in particular works with people who have been in car accidents and who do or do not have insurance. “We take all insurance plans but if a patient does not have their own, we provide a plan that is very affordable,” Dr. Rice said. “Many of our patients are from Scott Air Force Base who often do not have chiropractic insurance coverage.”

Shiloh Chiropractic has a unique relationship with pediatricians and pharmacists in the area who refer their young patients for treatment. “We do safe and natural adjustments for children and get tremendous positive response,” he said. “Chiropractic can help kids with ear infections, colic, bed wetting, ADD and ADHD, and so much more.”

Interestingly, once a person comes for treatments of something specific, they see all the other therapies we can perform as well. “When we can improve the quality of life for someone, they often refer us to their friends and family members,” Dr. Rice said.

For adult patients, the most prevalent symptoms treated are headaches/migraines, neck pain, back pain, sciatica nerve pain, shoulder pain, hip pain, fibromyalgia, soft tissue injuries, arthritis and pain caused from car accidents.

Indeed, according to the web site demandforce.com, 100% of their patients would recommend to friends or family; 99.7% of existing patient are satisfied with care; and 99.4% of new patients are satisfied with care.

To make an appointment or for more information, call (618) 234-8300 and visit www.shilohchiropractic.com; or email shilohchiropractic@gmail.com. The office is located in Shiloh at 1207 Frank Scott Parkway E.

Help The Make-A-Wish Foundation® Currently Shiloh Chiropractic has set a goal to raise $15,000 this year, which is enough to grant two wishes to two children in need. All you have to do is become a new patient and 100% of that $25 fee will be donated to the Make-A-Wish Foundation! The $25 fee includes a history, consultation, exam, X-rays (if necessary) and report of findings.

“All these children have life-threatening illnesses that we cannot treat, but we can try and make their wishes come true,” Dr. Rice said. “So far we are up to $5,000 which is almost enough for one wish!” Call the office today to schedule your consultation for just $25 and know that you are helping the Make-AWish Foundation right here in Southwestern Illinois.

Medical Spa Offers Treatment Of The Common Occurrence Of Toe Nail Fungus

Ashley Noeth, RN, Licensed Esthetician

W

hile Maryville Medical Spa offers many services including chemical peels, Botox, laser hair, spider vein and tattoo removal, massage, the Brava Breast System and more, a new and unique service is the laser treatment of toe nail fungus. Referred to by doctors as onychomycosis, toe nail fungus affects about half of all Americans by the age of 70 though it is more rare in children. These infections transpire when microscopic fungi penetrate the toe through a small wound. It then grows and festers because of the warmth from a person’s socks and shoes. “Toenail fungus can be picked up in damp areas such as public gyms, shower stalls or swimming pools, and can be passed among family members,” said Maryville Medical Spa manager Ashley Noeth, RN . Symptoms of toenail fungus include swelling, yellowing, thickening or crumbling of the nail, streaks or spots down the side of the nail, and even complete loss of the nail. Toenail color can vary from brown or yellow to white with this condition. Fungal infections can affect the fingernails as well as the toenails, but toenail fungus is more difficult to treat because toenails grow more slowly. It occurs most often on the big or small toe, but might occur on any toe. “This condition causes such embarrassment to people who suffer with it,” said Noeth, “but now we can actually treat and

cure this problem with our Nd:YAG therapy that is FDA approved. We have had great success with it.” The laser can penetrate beneath the surface of the toe nail and attack the fungus. Not only is the Nd:YAG therapy for onychomycosis, or toe nail fungus, more effective than the oral anti-fungals, it has fewer side effects and has lasting results. “The laser works by heating the nail and the nail bed – each treatment takes about 20 to 25 minutes. The heat in turn kills the fungus, resulting in a microbiological cure of the nail. Once the nail is cured of the infection caused by the fungus, the new, healthy nail grows in,” Noeth explained. All toenails are treated regardless of signs of infection to prevent the occurrence of reinfection. The number of treatments depends on the severity of the infection. “You will see improvements in the nails at the rate that is consistent with the normal growth of your nails,” she said. Call today to schedule your free consultation and to ask about current specials: (618) 288-2970 ext. 120. The Maryville Medical Spa is located in the lower level of Maryville Women’s Center at 2016 Vadalabene Drive; www.mymwc.org.

Memorial Hospital is Among Top 5% in Nation for Second Straight Year

H

ealthGrades, the nation’s leading independent healthcare ratings organization has named Memorial Hospital as a Distinguished Hospital for Clinical Excellence™ for the second consecutive year. This prestigious distinction places Memorial among the top 5% of more than 4,500 hospitals nationwide for clinical performance.

Healthgrades Hospital Quality Distinctions Healthgrades evaluates hospital performance for over 4,500 hospitals across the nation in 27 procedures and conditions annually. Healthgrades.com provides information on objective measures of hospital performance, which allows consumers to compare their local hospitals online at www.healthgrades.com/find-a-hospital.

HealthGrades Hospital Quality and Clinical Excellence study, recently released, objectively identifies those hospitals with the best overall clinical performance across at least 19 of 27 of the most common conditions and procedures. From 2009 through 2011, Memorial was one of just 262 hospitals nationwide showing superior performance in caring for patients in the Medicare population, as measured by objective clinical outcomes (risk-adjusted mortality and in-hospital complications). Nationally, if all hospitals performed at this level during that time period, a total of 164,414 lives could have potentially been saved.

Healthgrades evaluates nearly every hospital in the nation – no hospital can opt-in or opt-out of being evaluated, and no hospital pays to be evaluated. Mortality and complication rates are risk adjusted, which takes into account differing levels of severity of patient illness at different hospitals and allows for hospitals to be compared equally.

While many hospitals are eligible not all earn the award. In fact, Memorial Hospital was one of seven out of 19 eligible hospitals in the St. Louis, Missouri and Illinois area to receive this designation. “We are very pleased to be named a Distinguished Hospital for Clinical Excellence by Healthgrades,” said Mark J. Turner, Memorial’s president and CEO. “This distinction is a testament to our employees and Medical Staff, and their ongoing commitment to provide our patients with the best clinical experience possible.

About Healthgrades Healthgrades, headquartered in Denver, Colorado, is a leading provider of comprehensive information about physicians and hospitals. More than 200 million consumers use the Healthgrades websites, including Healthgrades.com and BetterMedicine.com, to research, select, and connect with a physician or hospital, and use its comprehensive information about clinical outcomes, patient satisfaction, patient safety, and health conditions to make more informed healthcare decisions and take action.

Healthgrades Hospital Quality Report Names Memorial Hospital as a Distinguished Hospital for Clinical ExcellenceTM Recipient

“We continuously monitor outcomes and re-invest in the technology necessary to provide the high-quality care our patients have come to expect from Memorial,” he continued. “Healthgrades helps consumers become more aware that hospital quality matters and differs significantly from one hospital to another, even in their own neighborhood,” said Evan Marks, executive vice president – infomatics and strategy for Healthgrades. “Since selecting a physician and hospital strongly impacts patients’ odds of experiencing complications or emerging from their procedure alive and well, patients should familiarize themselves with the Distinguished Hospital Award for Clinical Excellence recipients since these hospitals stand out above the rest for their overall clinical performance across a broad spectrum of care.” About Memorial Hospital Memorial Hospital is a 316-bed acute care community hospital serving Southwest Illinois since 1958. Recognized by the American Nurses Credentialing Center as a MAGNET Hospital, Memorial is committed to excellent patient outcomes and relationship-based care.

Art on the Square Is #1 In Our Community And Our Hearts What began as the vision of long-time Belleville resident Patty Gregory over 11 years ago, has become the #1 Art Fair in the nation not for just one year but for the past four out of five years according to the nationally renowned Art Fair Source Book. In fact, Art on the Square has received national recognition as one of the top-ranked art shows in the nation all 10 years it has been in existence. This ranking is provided after the participating artists provide their sales information to AFSB, and for Art on the Square, this amount has exceeded over $1,000,000 each year over the last three years. Greg Lawler, Editor & Publisher of the Art Fair Source Book sent the following statement after the rankings were released: “It is truly amazing that the small town show like Belleville's Art on the Square is again the number-one-selling art fair in the country. This is the art fair that should be the model for all others. From the incredibly energetic and creative director down to the sanitation workers, this event is as friendly and supportive as I've ever seen. The ever-growing Art Cash program practically guarantees the show will be a success even before the show starts. They don't get any better than this.” As a career elementary school teacher, Gregory knew that she wanted to do something “to attract a large group of people to the city of Belleville to see what all we have to offer!” she said. “We were so fortunate, too, to have the backing and support of then-mayor Mark Kern – he and the City of Belleville have been on board from the very beginning – as they are still.” In the beginning, Gregory gathered an amazing group of volunteers to do as much research around the country as possible. “Every person we met and talked to had some connection back to Belleville – and it continues like that each year,” she said. “I have always believed that the hand of God is in this Art Fair.”

Gregory gives credit to all of the sponsors, the surrounding communities – not just Belleville anymore – and “our fabulous, fabulous committee. Every committee member – ‘hand-picked’ – is a leader in their own right, which is one of the reasons we are so successful. We have one goal and everyone respects the other’s talents,” she said. “Now we have been together for so many years, we are family.” This year, close to 1,000 applications were received from artists around the world. The jurying process has picked the top 100 artists to participate, which will highlight both traditional and abstract two and three dimensional art in the following mediums: acrylics, watercolor, oil, photography, glass, jewelry, clay, metal, fine craft, mixed media, ceramics and wood. In addition to prize money for the artists, Art on the Square also has prepurchase pledges of over $100,000 from Belleville’s long-standing art lover’s community, which in turn goes back to the artists through the ART CASH purchase program. “Honestly, I don’t think people realize how much money goes back into the local economy on an annual basis from Art on the Square,” Gregory

(continued on page 26)

She literally traveled to countless art fairs from coast to coast asking the artists “to apply to this unknown entity in Belleville, Illinois,” she laughed. “One of the main things that impressed them was the fact that we have the second oldest philharmonic in the country in the Belleville Philharmonic. I think this made them understand that we love and appreciate culture here in our community. That, and the $25,000 in prize money we already had in pocket that is donated each year by one Belleville resident. Today, it is $30,000.”

PNC Arts Alive is a new program funded by a six-year, $2 million art's initiative in the St. Louis region. “Art on the Square was one of the 17 organizations selected to receive a $30,000 grant to start a program for special needs students age 16 to 21 years in District 201,” Gregory said. “We were very fortunate to hire an art education consultant, Joe Carriel (aka Joe Camel) who has been in the school every week on Tuesdays working with these young adults since September.” The goal is to open a gallery in October at the yellow cottage on the north end of the Belleville West campus. There will be four permanent installations on site plus the students’ work will be for sale. “This is a very unique program for these young adults, who are from all around the county, to be exposed to art,” she said.

St. Louis Composting Is Celebrating

International Compost Awareness Week (ICAW) with a Heaping Helping of Community Events May 7-11

By Ashley Bement, St. Louis Composting

W

hether experienced or aspiring, St. Louis Composting encourages gardeners from across the bi-state area to join in celebrating International Compost Awareness Week (ICAW), May 5-11! This year’s theme is “Compost...Nature’s Way to Grow!” Planned activities span the globe with events scheduled across the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Europe and Australia. Composting advocates will encourage everyone, everywhere, to compost. St. Louis Composting is doing its part by hosting community events May 7, 8 and 9 at three of their composting centers plus a workshop May 11 at Valley Park. Enjoy complimentary BBQ, snacks and veggies that grow GREAT in St. Louis Composting’s compost and soil blends. All events start at 11 a.m. • May 7 at the Fort Bellefontaine Compost Facility in Florissant, MO (13060 County Park Road) • May 8 at the Belleville, IL Facility (3521 Centreville Avenue) • May 9 at the Valley Park, MO Facility (39 Old Elam Avenue) Then, at noon, Saturday, May 11 at Valley Park, St. Louis Composting will present its popular “Give Compost a GROW at Home” workshop. Learn all about compost from the experts – including alternative composting methods and options – and how to start your own compost pile. Home composters will be available to order plus those who complete the workshop will receive one free cubic yard of compost to take home! (Free compost available only May 11, 2013.) If you’d like to put your garden on the path to producing an abundant crop in 2013 and beyond, this is the workshop to attend. No registration required. Just show up ready to COMPOST! For many families in the bi-state region, “Nature’s Way to Grow” means planting a backyard vegetable garden – the ultimate way to go green and assure that the produce they set on their tables is same-day fresh and packed with nutrition. As any seasoned vegetable gardener will attest, the best way to boost yields is to condition garden soil with compost. Compost delivers four primary benefits, all of which are beneficial to the environment:

• Compost improves plant/turf quality. Compost reduces spring transplant shock and over the long term, decreases plant stress response to drought, disease and insects. Because compost piles generate intense heat, compost is free of weeds, insects and insect eggs/larvae. Compost also reduces salt damage and provides nutritional balance. • Compost helps soil stay productive year after year. Water, whether from clouds or from a sprinkler, leaches chemical fertilizers out of soil, quickly stripping it of nutritional properties. Conversely, compost binds with soil and releases its nutrients over multiple years. • Compost “fixes” problem soils. Compost reduces compaction in heavy soil, enhances the productivity of sandy soil and increases top-soil and soil fertility in rebuilding worn-out soil. Over time, compost makes any type of soil easier to work. • Compost holds six times its weight in water. This magical property reduces the need for irrigation during periods of drought. But, perhaps most important to remember when planting is that using all-natural, STA-certified compost completes a 100% efficient recycling cycle! Join St. Louis Composting in getting hands-on with a heaping helping of compost May 7-11. If you are unable to attend any of our ICAW commemorative events, participate at home. Take a stab at starting your own compost pile or stop by for some of our Black Gold Compost to incorporate into your lawn, landscape beds and/or garden. You’ll see the benefits. Remodeling Company Pays Attention To Detail With A

Woman’s Touch

ave you been considering a home improvement project? Not sure who to call? “Let the Butler Take Care of Your Home:” This is the motto of Butler Home Improvement and the mission each staff member and installer strives for every day. This is also the primary purpose Peggy Kory acquired the company in 2009 and the reason for the “White Glove Service.” “Home improvement in conjunction with ensuring customers have a positive and enjoyable experience is why I got into this business,” said Kory. “I can guarantee you a pleasant, stressfree, no-pressure project from the first contact to the final walk through. I am most interested in making sure you absolutely love your project.” “Honestly, I have mixed feelings about promoting the fact that I’m a woman and this is a woman-owned business. After all, some people might feel like a woman isn’t qualified to run a home improvement company,” she said. “But then again, it might help customers recognize and understand how differently we do things. I absolutely hate when salesmen try to take advantage of me, so I instituted a strict ‘no tricks, no pressure’ sales policy. I don’t want people to ever have to worry about the products we sell for as long as they live - so I made sure we have the longest warranties in the business. It probably explains why I manage the company based on principles of respecting each other – whether it’s my staff, our installers, or our customers.”

Computer Running Slow?

But don’t mistake Kory’s kindness with “pushover.” She demands more from her employees and installers than anyone else – male or female. “We train them better, we pay them better, and we take better care of them,” she said. The most popular improvement projects so far this year have been decks, windows and sun rooms. Trends for decking include the ultra-low maintenance decking and rails, which Butler is an expert in, offering it for over 11 years. “There are so many products claiming they are ‘ultra-low maintenance.’ You have to be careful what you choose. We do extensive research on any product before even introducing it to a customer. We would only suggest it if we would put it in our own homes,” she said. In addition, as summer draws near, many customers focus on installing more energy-efficient windows and affordably enclosing patios/porches, so they can enjoy more seasons outside. Butler Home Improvement is located at 906 Vandalia in Collinsville; (618) 344-7073. Showroom hours are Monday through Friday 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Evenings and weekends by appointment. Family-owned Roofing Company Has Been in Business Over 100 Years H onesty, integrity, trust … it’s how Taylor Roofing stays on top providing quality service since 1905, said Gerrit Yank, president of Taylor Roofing Solutions. "I think the fact that we have been around for so long really speaks for itself,” he said. “Having so many of these storm chasers around here, we wouldn't still be here if we didn't do it right.”

Taylor Roofing with their Master Contractor or Service in Quality Patner more than 20 times in the past two decades. Carlisle-Syn Tec has inducted the company in Carlisle’s Applicator Hall of Fame with completion of over 500 “Perfect 10” applications, and more than 8 million square feet of warranted Carlisle membrane installed.

Very much a family affair, Taylor has many employed family members. “I would love to do a reality show about it – we have lots of great characters,” laughed Yank. The bottom line, though, is they all are very proud to be a part of the business.

Taylor Roofing, founded over 100 years ago as Biebel Roofing Co., was purchased by W. James Taylor in 1963 and is now owned and managed by his daughter Catherine Taylor Yank. She and her stepson, Gerrit, make a good team as they combine their strengths as long-time roofers and business people.

Another key to success for any company is their commitment to the community and Taylor has set the standard high. Many family members are Rotarians and they are particularly involved in BackStoppers Inc. and supporting Belleville Hospitals, and other numerous local charities and organizations.

“We are still very much how we’ve always been, but now we’re expanding in residential and specialty products, and bringing technology up to date,” Gerrit Yank said. “While quality products are of course a key to success, what differentiates us is our customer service.” Taylor Roofing is a roofing contractor serving the industrial, commercial and residential roofing needs of the Greater St. Louis Metropolitan area, Southern Illinois and Southeastern Missouri. Currently, the company is moving toward Central Illinois as well. Roofing industry manufacturers have recognized Taylor Roofing as one of the best St. Louis roofing contractors. Firestone has presented

“Raising the roof on safety,” Taylor Roofing continues to lead the industry in workplace safety precautions under the direction of a full-time safety director that performs weekly inspections at each job site. All superintendents and foremen are OSHA certified as well. Located at 1127 Eat B Street in Belleville, call (618) 233-2424 for more information or visit www.taylorroof.com. There is also a 24-hour emergency repair service in Illinois and Missouri at the same number.

Your Air Conditioner’s Best Friend Is A Precision Tune-Up! The Best Way to Guarantee Efficient, Reliable, Worry-Free Air Conditioning.

I

f you own a car, you probably don’t think twice about taking it into the shop for periodic tune-ups. After all, everybody wants a smooth, enjoyable ride and nobody wants to experience unexpected breakdowns. Common sense tells you that the best way to keep your car performing at its best is to schedule regular maintenance. The same applies to your air conditioning. Like your car, your air conditioner is a hardworking machine. It generates a lot of heat and has many moveable parts. It requires fluids and lubricants. Air conditioners are exposed to the elements, collect dust and dirt, and are subject to immeasurable wear and tear. In order to keep your air conditioning system working at its most efficient and economical, you should give it regular tune-ups and maintenance. Unfortunately, most homeowners don’t do so. In a recent survey, over 55% of air conditioning owners do not schedule regular tune-ups for their air conditioning systems and units. Not coincidentally, over half of all A/C users express dissatisfaction with the performance of their air conditioner and its cost to operate. Furthermore, service records show that most major and costly air conditioning repairs could have been prevented or detected early with a simple annual tune-up. Plus studies show, when you’re A/C unit is performing at its best, it will lower utility bills by up to 30%! You greatly increase the chances that your A/C technician will catch small problems before they become big ones. Repairing a small refrigerant leak that’s caught during a tune-up shouldn’t cost much more than the service call itself. On the other hand, buying a new

Dr. Rice

compressor when low refrigerant levels burn your current one out can cost a thousand dollars or more. What would you rather pay for — an ounce of prevention now or a pound of cure later? Precision tune-ups ensure that your A/C unit is working at optimal efficiency. When your A/C is running well, it uses less energy to cool your home. Lower energy use means bigger savings for you on your monthly utility bills. Bottom Line: An air conditioner tune-up will save you lots of money in both the long and short term…and provide you with a worry-free summer. There’s no doubt about it: a precision tune-up for your air conditioner is the simplest and best thing you can do to guarantee that your air conditioner will keep you comfortable all summer long and your best assurance that small problems don’t develop into bigger, more expensive headaches later on. Schedule Your Air Conditioner Safety and Professional Cleaning Today! To ensure worry-free, money-saving operation, schedule an air-conditioning precision tune-up today! Spengler Plumbing, Heating and Cooling, locally owned and operated for over 42 years is running a $69 Spring Special on Air Conditioning Safety and Cleaning Tune-Ups. Call (618) 623-0572 today to schedule your appointment or log onto spenglerco.com to learn more.

DO DOES HAVE YOU HATE YOUR BACKYARD?

I

f you have answered yes to any of the above questions, make your dreams a reality by stopping at Sonnenberg Landscaping Materials to check out the possibilities. Family owned and operated, Sonnenberg’s is the area’s premier supplier of landscaping materials. Both locations, Belleville and Columbia, have beautiful and spacious showrooms, inspiring displays, and large inventories of items that are sure to meet every need. “We research the market as much as we can so that we can stock what is new. The trend for the past several years has been to create a backyard oasis with stone or brick patios, water features, and fire places or fire pits. People want a relaxing atmosphere that goes beyond the old backyard concrete slab patio,” said Kirk Sonnenberg, founder and owner. “When you come to one of our stores, our helpful staff can show you a variety of landscape materials and related products.”

YOUR HOME LACK CURB APPEAL?

HAVE YOU BEEN DREAMING OF A CUSTOM OUTDOOR SPACE WITH A FABULOUS KITCHEN OR PATIO?

While we are on the subject of new additions, Sonnenberg’s has a new landscape designer, Kelda, with over 14 years of experience. “Kelda is just fantastic,” Sonnenberg said. “Our customers love her and we are very proud of her design work. It doesn’t matter how large or small the job is, she puts her heart into every project.” So if you want a new landscape look, whether you do it yourself or have it professionally designed and installed, Sonnenbergs’ is the place to go. Choose from a variety of natural stone, decorative rock, pavers, wall blocks, pond supplies, mulch, and many other landscaping materials. Sonnenberg’s also has same day delivery. Stop by to see the possibilities and be on the lookout for our customer appreciation day in May.

New to Sonnenberg Landscaping and Materials this past year are pergolas. “A pergola really adds a great feature and makes an excellent place to have a backyard gathering. And because it is a free-standing structure, you can place it almost anywhere you want.”

In addition, Sonnenberg’s is the leading driveway and parking lot sealing company in the Metro East. Since 1983, they have paved parking lots of all sizes, large or small. Or, if you prefer to seal your own, you can buy the sealer and supplies that you will need.

For those of you who are barbeque fanatics, it just doesn’t get any better than the Big Green Egg grill. This is a new product at Sonnenberg’s and comes in several sizes that offer high temperature cooking to slow smoking, all while using very little charcoal. The Big Green Egg and cooking accessories are offered at the Columbia store only and are absolutely the “gold standard” of grills.

VariegatedGreenery Gives The Garden Pizazz

Velvety red roses, saucy daffodils, perfumed lilies, blushed apple blossoms - all have enticed novices into gardening over the years. But experienced gardeners quickly discover that foliage is much more than a foil for the flowers they love. It has beauty of its own, lasts well after flowers fade, and spices landscapes with texture and form. Today, as every nursery-goer knows, foliage is fashionable. Yes, there's every shade of green imaginable, including the recently popular chartreuse. But the newest stars boast variegated foliage, green leaves splashed, edged, dappled and striped with white, cream, yellow, rusty reds and combinations of all four. Flowers are sometimes bit players on these dazzling beauties that seem to sparkle in sun or shade. Encouraged by the success of newcomers like ornamental grasses and the renewed popularity of old favorites like coleus and pelargoniums, growers have eagerly looked for variegated "sports" or chance mutations in garden mainstays like iris, day lilies, citrus and the like. Their efforts to stabilize a chance variegation have paid off with a host of new "old favorites" now available in nurseries. What causes variegation? "It's an absence of chlorophyll," said Toby Mancini, a grower for Monrovia. "When the green of chlorophyll disappears, the real color of the leaf comes forward. That white or red you see was there all the time." Less chlorophyll, used by plants to make food, means variegated plants have to work harder for necessary nutrition, Mancini said. Generally that means they tend to need more and brighter light than their all-green counterparts. Otherwise they may revert to natural green leaves to survive. Here are some other garden classics with variegated forms. Check your local nursery for the plants that will work best in your area.

• White-edged Sage (Salvia officinalis WhiteEdged): A variegated form of the popular Salvia officinalis Berggarten, this upright, mounding sage has textured gray-green leaves bordered irregularly with soft white. Full sun. • Brise d'Anjou Jacob's Ladder (Polemonium caeruleum Brise d'Anjou): Striking ferny leaves meticulously outlined in white are topped by cool violet-blue flower spikes in summer. Partial-full shade. 2 feet tall and wide. • Summer Gold Lily of the Nile (Agapanthus africanus Hinag Summer Gold): Arching broad leaves boldly edged in yellow are strong competition for the tall blue-purple flower spikes this plant is prized for. Evergreen. Full sun. • Oriental Limelight Artemisia (Artemisia vulgaris Oriental Limelight): Tall growing and mounding hybrid has aromatic foliage splashed with lemon-yellow and cream. Full sun. • Variegata Hydrangea (Hydrangea macrophylla Variegata): Soft green leaves are dappled with creamy white and yellow-green on this old garden favorite. Pink lace-cap flowers are stunning, too. Sun to partshade. To 6 feet tall. Deciduous. • Variegated Pink Spotted Dead Nettle (Lamium maculatum Variegated Pink): Known for its spotted heartshaped leaves, this hybrid boasts silver and green foliage and lavender-pink flowers in spring. 8 inches high to 3 feet wide. Tolerates dry shade. • Marjorie Channon Pittosporum (Pittosporum tenuifolium Marjorie Channon): Dark stems are a vivid contrast to small silver green and white leaves on this hybrid shrub. Grows to 8 feet tall and wide.
