Long-Time Jeweler Enjoys Working With Young Couples To Find That Perfect Ring

or most couples, the single most treasured investment in their life is the bride’s wedding ring. This symbol of a lifelong commitment to each other is also a beginning of a new transition together. Cecena’s Jewelry, an anchor in the Metro East, specializes in this once-in-a-lifetime moment. “Yes, our forte is definitely bridal,” said Antonio Cecena, owner and custom jewelry designer at Cecena’s. “Working with these young couples is very exciting for us – it’s really fun to be a part of this big move they are about to make.” Interestingly, Cecena said the trend in choosing the ring has changed every two years or so. “For a couple years, the bride came in and picked her ring out and then the groom entered the picture; and then for a couple years they came in together. Right now it seems like more guys are coming in to choose the ring and then surprising her with it.” “The cool thing about bridal is every year I always find a new line to offer – this year I picked up two new lines!” he said. “So our choices are constantly refreshed.” Of course there is a wide selection for the groom including those matching the bride’s set, but “it’s always last minute… sometimes last second!” Cecena’s has a rich history in the Metro East opening 38 years ago in Cahokia just down the road from Parks College. “My folks, who have been married for 56 years, opened the store where I literally grew up,” Cecena said. Moving in the late ‘80s to West Belleville proved successful, but their most recent location change to Green Mount Crossing in Shiloh has been “epic,” Cecena said, laughing. “Just to give you an idea: of all the Dierbergs' locations, this property is one of their most successful.”

Starting off at the ripe old age of 16, Cecena began a longtime career by learning how to repair clocks and watches. “By 18, I was taking it seriously,” he said. Now known throughout the area as quite the creative custom jeweler, he tells customers “the sky’s the limit. I know that sounds corny, but it’s true. Often a customer walks in with a loose stone of some kind and just says, ‘make me something pretty – I trust ya!’” Son Ryan, the third generation, is involved in the business, which really “happened by accident,” Cecena said. “He worked here part-time for gas money while he was in school, but it just fell in place. And now he’s such an important part of the company’s success as far as repairs – he carries a lot of responsibility.” Obviously enjoying each other’s company, the family works together every day alongside 28-year staff member Celeste Gamache and Pamela Herbeck. “We actually do all get along. I think by turning off the mom-dad-son buttons while we’re at work helps a lot,” Cecena said. “A lot of people can’t grasp that concept, but it works for us and when we walk out the door it’s back to family.” Cecena’s offers all different kinds of jewelry from fine to custom to “fun stuff.” Carrying all the standards in earrings and pendants, they have contemporary designs plus the mainstream. “Sterling silver is our hottest seller, but it’s also most popular because it’s affordable,” he said. “I just picked up this new line that’s very very affordable with lots of sparkly stones – it’s just so neat.” “Our work here is so gratifying – it really is. It’s nice to make a difference to someone by repairing something special or an heirloom. As a country girl at heart, though, Debra Payne went home to Ozark, MO where she had her own tailor shop “right on the square in town,” she said. “It was very different than working here at Willard’s…I could hang a sign on the door that said, ‘went to the auction, be back soon.’” For seven years, Debra and Willard Payne maintained a long-distance relationship. “He would ask me all the time to marry him and finally he said, ‘I’ll give you 30 seconds to answer and then I’m not asking any more.’”

For prom and homecoming, Champagne and Lace keeps a log of their customers and what school they attend – once a particular dress is sold it will not be seen on any other person at the same school. “Sometimes I have to tell an unhappy girl that I can’t sell her the dress she wants, but then they always see the point and choose something else,” she said.

She said, “yes,” and the rest is history as they say. Always wanting a bridal shop to pair with the tailor shop, Willard Payne encouraged Debra to open her own boutique, which she did a couple years ago. Sadly there was a small fire last

ho serves the best pizza in town? “Fuggedaboudit!” Schiappa’s does of course! With two locations in Lebanon and O’Fallon, Schiappa’s has been feeding customers’ pizza addictions since 1979. Now customers can enjoy their favorite Italian cuisine in the brand new location at 1411 West Highway 50 in O’Fallon. Moving recently from the previous location in O’Fallon, Owner Stephen Schieppe said the move has been fantastic for business. In fact, he has doubled the staff! “This location is much more visible in a high-traffic area with great signage and neighbors,” Schieppe said. “It was time to make a change.” The new restaurant has a better flow, Schieppe said, with lots of seating and a nicesized bar, with eight flat-screen TVs, that is accessible to outdoor dining. There are two banquet rooms: one to accommodate 40 and one for 50, or it can be opened up to seat 100. It’s the perfect spot for a large group after a ballgame, too. For now the menu is just the same, “but we may tweak it as we get settled in and the lunch buffet has been expanded to include fried chicken every day and a larger selection of food items,” he said. Lunch buffet hours have been extended, too, from 11 a.m to 2 p.m. Pronounced Ski-ah-pahs, the original restaurant in Lebanon opened on St. Louis Street by Dona and John Schieppe who were both teachers in the area. Born to parents from Italy, John Schieppe traveled from New Jersey to attend McKendree College, met his

bride and stayed for a lifetime. He knew the area was in need of authentic Italian food so he gathered family recipes from Italy and the East Coast, hung a shingle and rocked the pizza lovers of Lebanon. Soon the restaurant gained so many fans they had to expand… and expand again until they found their current spot at 402 South Madison Street/Route 4 in Lebanon. Then in 1993, the second location opened in O’Fallon, which just relocated. Think you and a buddy can eat a 29-inch pizza in 30 minutes? How about two friends and a 36-inch pie in 30 minutes? Stephen Schieppe said 10 pairs have polished off the 29inch and only two parties have finished the 36-inch. Can’t imagine a 36-inch pizza? One thing’s for sure it wouldn’t fit out the front door in the old location but it’s not a problem in the new spot. Contestants win prizes if they can meet the gastronomic challenge. The menu includes plenty of other delicious items including pastas, calzones, Stromboli and salads, said Schieppe. People come as much for the wings, though, with nine different varieties to choose from: mild, hot, scorching, sweet mild, sweet hot, honey mustard, honey barbecue, teriyaki and Caribbean jerk.
