The history of jazz and blues in St. Louis is a long, rich tradition with many fine (and, perhaps, a few low) establishments where one could hear blues or jazz just about every night. One such establishment is the building located at 700 South Broadway which houses BB’s Jazz, Blues and Soups. It was known as Phil’s Hotel as late as 1969, and has a colorful past of its own. Since its original construction in the mid 1800’s, in an area then known as “Frenchtown” the location has been used as a home, boarding house, reception hall, merchantile, millinery, transient hotel, bar, diner, burlesque house, and a House of Ill Repute with 37 rooms between its 2nd and 3rd floors. That 3rd floor was a late addition to the original building in the late 1800’s.

We’re stoked about our staff, our City’s music and culture, the food, the drinks, the artworks, the memorabilia, and the whole overall operation.” The upcoming lineup of performers for November include Lil’ Ed & the Blues Imperials; James Armstrong Blues Band; Hector Anchondo; Matthew Curry & The Fury; Creole Stomp; Harper & the Midwest Kind; and Dawn Weber & Naked Rock Fight. Thanksgiving Day Parade Nationally renowned artist and entrepreneur Mary Engelbreit has been named Honorary Grand Marshal of the 2013 Ameren Missouri Thanksgiving Day Parade. “We are honored and truly thankful to have Mary serve as our grand marshal,” said Brian Hall, chairman of Christmas in St. Louis. “She is a true St. Louis treasure and national icon who has always given so much back to our community.” Now in its 29th year, the parade will begin at 8:45 a.m. Thursday, November 28 from the corner of Washington Avenue and Fourth Street in downtown St. Louis. It will be broadcast live (starting at 8 a.m.) on KMOV-TV Channel 4’s “Great Day St. Louis.” The Mary Engelbreit Story A St. Louis native who went to work directly out of high school at an art supplies store, Engelbreit initially focused her talents on greeting cards, drawing attention from other companies anxious to license her artwork on a wide range of products; nearly 6,500 products in all, with more than $1 billion in lifetime retail sales. She was also editor-in-chief of the award-winning creative lifestyle magazine, Mary Engelbreit’s Home Companion. Today, thousands of retailers sell Mary Engelbreit products to her countless fans, and Mary Engelbreit Studios continues to add new licensees and product categories. Nearly 30 years after that first trip to New York, Engelbreit fulfilled her dream of illustrating children’s books, and is now one of a select few artists with three New York Times children’s best sellers.

2013 Ameren Missouri Thanksgiving Day Parade in 29th Year The annual Ameren Missouri Thanksgiving Day Parade is hosted by Christmas in St. Louis along with presenting sponsor Ameren Missouri and the City of St. Louis. In addition to dozens of magnificent floats and colorful helium balloons, the parade will feature area marching bands and the annual Battle of the Bands Contest. As a Christmas in St. Louis partner, the St. Louis Convention & Visitors Commission’s Holiday Magic http://stlholidaymagic.com/ team will once again participate in this year’s parade. The Holiday Magic mascot, Snowflake, will also be on hand. Exciting Coloring Contest Christmas in St. Louis will utilize Mary Engelbreit artwork for its first Ameren Missouri Thanksgiving Day Parade Coloring Contest. Kids ages 5 to 12 are encouraged to enter. The winner of the coloring contest will be named Junior Grand Marshal and receive an exciting ride in the parade! DOCTOR’S

ORDERS David A. Dorsey, MD

There are 2 types of pain: acute and chronic. Acute pain doesn’t last long and usually goes away as your body heals. Chronic pain lasts at least 6 months after your body has healed. Sometimes, people who have chronic pain don’t know what is causing it. Along with discomfort, chronic pain can cause low self-esteem, depression and anger. It can also interfere with your daily activities.

How is chronic pain treated? Treatment of chronic pain usually involves medicines and therapy. Medications used for chronic pain include pain relievers, antidepressants and anticonvulsants. Different types of medicines help people who have different types of pain. You usually use long-acting medicines for constant pain. Short-acting medicines treat pain that comes and goes. Several types of therapy can help ease your pain. Physical therapy (such as stretching and strengthening activities) and low-impact exercise (such as walking, swimming or biking) can help reduce the pain. However, exercising too much or not at all can hurt chronic pain patients. Occupational therapy teaches you how to pace yourself and how to do ordinary tasks differently so you won’t hurt yourself. Behavioral therapy can reduce your pain through methods (such as meditation and yoga) that help you relax. It can also help decrease stress. Lifestyle changes are an important part of treatment for chronic pain. Getting regular sleep at night and not taking daytime naps should help. Also, stopping smoking helps because the nicotine in cigarettes can make some medicines less effective. Smokers also tend to have more pain than nonsmokers. Most pain treatments will not take away all of your pain. Instead, treatment should reduce how much pain you have and how often it occurs. Talk to your doctor to learn how to best control your pain. Tell your doctor where the pain is, how bad it is and how often your pain occurs. Also talk about what makes the pain better or worse. Your doctor may review other health problems (such as arthritis, breathing problems and heart conditions) you may have because these may keep you from doing some types of therapy. Your doctor may also ask if you have had any problems with sleep, mood or anxiety. Source: family doctor.org
