Christmas Roundup The holiday mash-up of Merry ThanksGivoween is one of my favorite times of the year. What other time of the year do you get a three for one deal on holidays? Tiny tots can get their picture taken holding a turkey and a pumpkin pie flanked by Santa and a goblin of their choice. Halloween is now a distant memory and Thanksgiving just ended so let’s take a moment to review our options for Christmas. There is no excuse to sit at home when there are so many events going on. Below is a small sampling of things you may want to put on your to do list. So, let’s don our gay apparel and head on out. Mannheim Steamroller Christmas: The STL Symphony performs the sounds of Mannheim Steamroller Christmas at Powell Hall for the first time ever this holiday season on Saturday, December 14. The St Louis Symphony’s December calendar is full of Christmas programs, so you may want to check out the web site at stlsymphony.org to get a complete listing. The Butterfingers Angel, Mary Joseph, Herod The Nut, The Slaughter of 12 Hit Carols In A Pear Tree is your Christmas gift from Stray Dog Theatre at Tower Grove Abbey December 5 thru December 21. An imaginative retelling of the Christmas story complete with talking animals, a feminist-leaning Mary, a jealous Joseph, a fast-talking sheep, and one loud-mouthed overbearing tree. A wonderful Christmas cartoon mixed with psychological realism bringing new relevance to its timeless subject. straydogtheatre.org

This time of year is chocked full of nutcrackers so I’m listing two options on this one. Moscow Ballet’s Great Russian Nutcracker takes place Sunday, December 8 at the Peabody Opera House. The holiday favorite dramatizes the traditional story of Masha meeting her “Prince” and, exclusive to Moscow Ballet’s Great Russian Nutcracker, there is an added tribute to world peace. The “Dove of Peace,” for which 2 dancers become one bird with a 20 foot wingspan, escorts Masha and Prince to the “Land of Peace and Harmony.” See the best of Russian ballet in Moscow Ballet’s Great Russian Nutcracker! peabodyoperahouse.com If you prefer something from the hometown team then you may want to take in the Saint Louis Ballet Presents The Nutcracker December 20 thru December 29 at the University of Missouri-St. Louis Blanche M. Touhill Performing Arts Center. This holiday classic features Tchaikovsky’s famous score, special effects and the resident dancers of the Saint Louis Ballet. The professional company will be joined on stage by 80 talented ballet students. Saint Louis Ballet’s artistic director Gen Horiuchi puts his own personal touch on this popular ballet with new choreography and dazzling effects. stlouisballet.org/nutcracker.html ELF The Musical from December 19 thru December 29 at the Fox Theatre in Grand Center. Fast becoming a holiday classic, ELF is the hilarious tale of Buddy, a young orphan child who mistakenly crawls into Santa’s bag of gifts and is transported back to the North Pole. Unaware that he is actually human, Buddy’s enormous size and poor toy-making abilities cause him to face the truth. Buddy embarks on a journey to New York City to find his birth father, discover his true identity, and help New York remember the true meaning of Christmas. Aren’t we all a little like Buddy at Christmas so go ahead and embrace your inner ELF at fabulousfox.com Speaking of Christmas classics, we can’t overlook A Christmas Carol December 5 thru December 8 at the Fox Theatre in Grand Center. When Charles Dickens wrote his “ghostly little tale” in 1843, he couldn’t know that A Christmas Carol was destined to haunt us every Christmas and become one of the most beloved holiday traditions of all time. The Nebraska Theatre Caravan has been touring Charles Jones’ delightful adaptation of A Christmas Carol since 1979. Spirit your way to the website fabulousfox.com

And finally, why not start or end your day by taking the kids for breakfast or dinner with Santa at the St. Louis Zoo. Get all the information at stlzoo.org and go to the Calendar of Events.
