FIRST FRIDAY AT IPHF Presented by the International Photography Hall of Fame and Museum 3415 Olive Street

Beginning with the first Friday in May the International Photography Hall of Fame and Museum offers free admission and extended hours on the first Friday of each month in conjunction with the Grand Center First Fridays. The Museum will be open 11:00 am – 9:00 pm. Metered street parking is available on the street along Olive Street and neighboring streets. Visitors may also take advantage of numerous parking lots in the Grand Center district.

FREE PARKING* TO ALL HOME GAMES

The International Photography Hall of Fame and Museum is the only museum in St. Louis dedicated exclusively to photography. The IPHF preserves, promotes and educates on the history of photography by exhibiting prints and antique cameras from the permanent collection, and hosting special exhibitions focusing on the art and science of photography. The hallmark of IPHF is the Hall of Fame where the pioneers and innovators of photography can be recognized and honored. IPHF is the only organization world-wide with this specific objective which is its greatest distinguishing attribute. The Hall of Fame is the result of a project began in 1965 by the Photographic Art and Science Foundation. Members of the Professional Photographers of America originally created the foundation to promote photographic history by inducting historically significant photographers and inventors into a Photography Hall of Fame. However, no physical structure existed to commemorate Hall of Fame inductees or to display the Foundation’s photographic and historical resources.

The original Photography Hall of Fame opened in 1977 as part of the University Museums at the Brooks Institute of Photography in Santa Barbara, California. In 1983 the International Photography Hall of Fame & Museum moved from the Brooks Institute to the Kirkpatrick Center in Oklahoma City. In 2013, The International Photography Hall of Fame and Museum embarked on its largest capital campaign and relocated the museum to the Grand Center Arts District in St. Louis, Missouri. The IPHF now occupies 6,000 sq. ft. of gallery and exhibition space in one of the country’s densest cultural districts.

A phrase often heard about St. Louis City neighborhoods when talking of grocery stores is “food deserts”. What’s that? It is an underserved neighborhood lacking grocery options such as access to fresh, affordable, quality produce. There’s a new wave of smaller-format, fresh grocery concepts such as Fields Foods that have their sights set on the St. Louis urban market. As stated on their web site “Fields Foods is locally owned, locally operated, and locally focused. [They are] dedicated to bringing fresh, locally produced foods to residents in St. Louis – which has several urban food desert areas where healthy, nutritious food options have been limited for far too long.” Their first 37,000-square-foot store was opened near Lafayette Square in January. Fields Foods places a big emphasis on partnering with local vendors and farmers. The Fields Foods store is located across from the old City Hospital Building, which has been converted into the Georgian Condominiums, in the near South Side of St. Louis. Originally known as Bohemian Hill, the area was home to a large Czech community in the 1850s. Although much of the original neighborhood has disappeared over the years, the Soulard neighborhood to the east and the Lafayette Square neighborhood to the west have become the pride of St. Louis. Fields Foods describe themselves as a Sustainable Social Enterprise, bringing together the values of both a forprofit and non-profit business to make a difference in the local communities they serve. For more information about Fields Foods visit them at www.fieldsfoods.com Fields Foods located at 1500 Lafayette Ave.

15 WHO-KNEW? USES FOR YOUR MICROWAVE By Real Simple Magazine | Shine Food

“St. louis’ best steaks” - rft readers poll 1999-2013

More than a popcorn popper, this versatile appliance was underutilized until now. By Melissa Clark and Lindsay Funston

1. Disinfect and Deodorize Sponges: Don't throw out the kitchen

sponge that smells like last night's salmon. Soak it in water spiked with white vinegar or lemon juice, then heat it on high for 1 minute. (Use an oven mitt to remove it.) This will also disinfect any sponges you used to wipe up the juices from a raw chicken.

2. Cook an Entire Dinner in Under 10 Minutes: Not just the TV

variety. We mean braised salmon with green beans and mashed potatoes. Use the microwave for any recipe that calls for braising, poaching, or steaming. Just subtract about three-quarters of the cooking time. Remember to stir liquids often to redistribute the heat, and always take the food out a minute or two before it's completely done, since it will continue to cook.

3. Disinfect Plastic Cutting Boards: Wash the board well, rub it with the cut side of a lemon, then heat for 1 minute.

4. Soften Brown Sugar: Keep the sugar in its plastic packaging, add a few drops of water, and heat on medium for 10 to 20 seconds.

5. Decrystalize Honey: Honey that has solidified can be brought back to liq-

uid life by uncovering the jar and heating on medium power for 30 seconds to 1 minute.

6. Proof Yeast Doughs: Yeast doughs that normally take an hour or more to

rise at room temperature can be proofed in the microwave in about 15 minutes. Place the dough in a very large bowl and cover with plastic. Place an 8-ounce cup of water in the back of the microwave with the bowl of dough in the center, and set the power as low as possible (10 percent power). Heat for 3 minutes, then let the dough rest in the microwave for 3 minutes. Heat for 3 minutes longer, then let rest for 6 minutes. The dough will double in bulk.

7. Heat up Health Aids: You use a microwave to reheat your coffee, so why not

use it to heat and reheat gel packs for headaches? (Don't do this with a metal-wrapped pack.)

8. Warm Beauty Products: Warming up a hot-oil conditioning pack for

your hair takes about 10 to 20 seconds and feels marvelous, as does briefly heating up a moisturizing facial mask. (Stir the mask and test the temperature with your finger before applying to your face.) And if hot wax hardens when you're only halfway up your calf, reheat it in the microwave. It's much less messy than using a double boiler.

9. Roast Garlic: It takes 45 minutes to roast garlic in the oven but less than 8 in the microwave. Slice off the top of the head to reveal all the cloves. Place the head in a small, deep dish, season with salt and pepper, and drizzle with 2 tablespoons of good olive oil. Spoon 2 tablespoons of water into the bottom of the dish, cover it with plastic wrap, and cook at medium power for 7 to 7½ minutes. Let stand for a few minutes before unwrapping.

10. Get More Juice From Citrus Fruits: A lemon or lime taken straight

from the refrigerator is harder to juice than one left at room temperature or warmed slightly. To get the most juice, microwave citrus fruits for 20 seconds before squeezing.

11. Toast Bread Crumbs, and Coconut: The microwave toasts them

in a quarter of the time it takes in a conventional oven. Spread them out on a plate and heat on high for 2 to 3 minutes, stirring every minute. Keep in mind that they will continue to toast for about a minute after removal.

12. Warm Tortillas: Wrap tortillas in a damp paper towel. Microwave on high (power level 10) for 40 seconds to 1 minute.

13. Toast Pine Nuts and Sliced Almonds: Spread nuts on a micro-

wave-safe plate. Microwave on high (power level 10) in 1-minute intervals, tossing in between, until beginning to turn golden, 4 to 5 minutes.

14. Make Applesauce: In a microwave-safe bowl, combine 1 pound peeled

and diced apples (Macintosh, Fuji, or Gala are best) with ¼ cup water, 2 teaspoons sugar, and ⅛ teaspoon cinnamon. Cover and microwave on high (power level 10) until the apples are tender, 8 to 10 minutes. Mash with a fork or potato masher.

15. Make Homemade Popcorn: Place ½ cup popcorn kernels in a large

microwave-safe bowl with 1 tablespoon olive or canola oil. Cover with a microwavesafe plate and microwave on high (power level 10) until the majority of the kernels have popped, 3 to 5 minutes.

Worst Ways to Clean Your TV By Becky Worley

You've invested hundreds — maybe thousands — of dollars in your TV. So how should you clean the screen without risking ruining it? The Internet is full of ideas and ads touting the best products. I searched "How to clean a flat screen TV" and found a crazy set of suggested cleaning methods. So I sacrificed an LCD in order to put seven supposed solutions to the test. The Test Since most often, I find myself cleaning off kids' fingerprints, I first mixed up a concoction to simulate what they might have on their hands — cream cheese, sunscreen, and peanut butter. Next, I had the questionable pleasure of smearing this mess all over the screen (which I did while the kids were out of the house — gotta be careful what I role-model). I unplugged the TV for safety, then tested each product in turn: 1. Windex: I was nervous about using anything with ammonia, but it didn't seem to do any damage. On the other hand, it left a streaky residue. Just like when you clean your windows, the product isn't perfect. 2. Alcohol and Water: I like the idea of alcohol, because it should evaporate without leaving a mark. And in fact, the results were pretty good — at least with a soft rag. So next, I took the opportunity to test the same cleaner with a different cloth… 3. Alcohol and Water and Paper Towel: Disaster! Not only did the paper towel shed fibers on the screen, it streaked the screen so badly, I thought I might have permanently scratched it. Sure, some TV glass is more durable than others, but a scratched screen is something you definitely don't want to risk. 4. Furniture Polish: This is not something I would have ever tried had I not read it on line… And sure enough — the result was major streaks along with a cloudy residue. 5. Water and Vinegar: At first, this didn't seem to cut the grease, but once I buffed it out, this combo really worked. For a low-budget solution a product you might already have on hand, this does an admirable job. 6. Antistatic Cleaning Wipes: These come pre-moistened and are supposedly formulated specifically for cleaning TVs and electronics screens. Yeah, well, maybe they're designed just to deal with the dust that is naturally attracted to electronic screens, and their makers didn't foresee cream cheese. That could excuse the major streaks that remained after trying these wipes, but it doesn't excuse the hairy particles the cloth itself left behind. 7. Screen Guard and Microfiber: Of all the solutions I tried, Screen Guard was the most expensive; at $20, it's more than twice as pricey as the antistatic wipes — which may make many shy away. But the result? Perfection. No residue, no streaks, no fibers. In fact, after the test, I used this method to clean the entire screen of the mess left by all the other contenders. Bottom line: if you've spent hundreds or thousands on a TV, $20 on the right cleaner seems like a smart investment.
