Lantern Festival: Magic Reimagined CHECK
OUT OUR
CRAFT BEERS
This summer St. Louis visitors from around the world once again have the opportunity to experience an event rarely staged outside of Asia. The 2015 Lantern Festival has brought twenty-two all new lighted, larger-than-life installations to the Missouri Botanical Garden. These works of art created from silk, steel and porcelain celebrate the Garden’s ongoing botanical research and partnerships in China. These decades-long collaborative relationships with the leading botanical institutions in China have led to the publication of the expansive Flora of China, ethnobotany and climate change research, and horticultural training. The Garden received rave reviews and critical acclaim for the 2012 Festival. New sets of lighted works of art were commissioned from Zigong, China for a 2015 Festival. On May 23 the Garden’s Lantern Festival: Magic Reimagined was opened to the public. The exhibition runs through August 23. Currently the Festival is open Thursday thru Sunday evenings. Beginning in August the Festival will open nightly as the sets, lit from within, become magical turning the Garden into a wonderland. For a sneak peek, enjoy the spectacle of the Lantern Festival: Magic Reimagined from above via a short aerial video on YouTube. To play the Garden’s video, search for “Lantern Festival Magic Reimagined Flyover” on YouTube. For complete information about the 2015 Lantern Festival please visit the Garden’s website at missouribotanicalgarden. org/lanternfestival.

Dish detergent can do more than just keep plates clean. One particular "unusual use" comes to mind: cleaning off oil-drenched birds and wildlife. But in our homes, there are many other areas the liquid soap can be helpful outside of your kitchen sink, including the back yard or your bathroom. Curious? Here are some of our favorite other uses for dish soap, below.

ICE PACK
A Lifehacker reader shared this amazing trick of how you can make a gel ice pack with dish detergent. Just pour some into a strong freezer bag and let it sit in the freezer. It makes a great cold compress that is flexible and contours to your body. I highly recommend this from firsthand experience; I used this after a trip to the emergency room the other weekend!
SHAMPOO
An unconventional choice for sure, but dish soap can be used instead of shampoo. A tipster at the money-saving site ThriftyFun recommends the Dawn brand dish liquid as a weekly clarifying treatment.
The world is full of nice people. If you can't find one, be one.
BUBBLES
-Nishan Panwar
Kids love bubbles -- the bigger, the better. Here is a collection of various bubble solutions that you can make with dish detergent. This will make for some fun late-summer afternoons for the little ones in your life.
PEST CONTROL
Dish detergent can help protect your garden from insects like spider mites and aphids. Colorado State University has put together this guide on how you can make dish detergent sprays for your gardens.

LAWN FURNITURE CLEANER
$
With fall rapidly approaching, it will soon be time to put away your outdoor furniture. Whether you have vinyl or resin, you can scrub it down with...wait for it...dish soap. Real Simple recommends wiping down the furniture with a rag dipped in a solution of dish liquid and water. This mild cleaner will remove dirt and debris that has caked onto your furniture.

There will also be a special puppetry performance by Bob Kramer’s Marionette’s at 10:30 a.m., noon, and 1:30 p.m. outdoors on Spoehrer Plaza. The Garden grounds will be free of charge from 9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. Also, in celebration of Henry Shaw’s birthday, visitors can experience a special treat - an exclusive peek inside the historic Museum Building, normally closed to the public.
