HOLIDAY PARTY NOW!

What are you doing New Year’s? As Elle Fitzgerald sang we would like to know ”What are you doing New Year’s / New Year’s Eve? “ A very pertinent question now that First Night will not happen this year in Grand Center. What are some options to keep the party going? There is a lot to do around town to help you ring in 2016 and below are a few suggestions.

NYE Live! at Ballpark Village. This is the second annual official New Year’s Ball Drop in St. Louis and there are three different packages and five venues from which to choose promising live music, food, fun, and a midnight toast. stlballparkvillage.com select entertainment/NYE Live. New Year’s Eve with the Funky Butt Brass Band at the Broadway Oyster Bar. New Orleans style brass, funk, and soul with Funky Butt Brass to ring in the New Year. Toss out those inhibitions and join in the celebration at The BOB! All 3 spaces including the patio will be open and heated for dinner, drinks, and music. Check it out at broadwayoysterbar.com Pokey LaFarge along with special guests the Hooten Hallwers and River Kittens will be celebrating the New Year at the Pageant. St. Louis-based singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist Pokey LeFarge draws from a deep well of American musical traditions to create a distinctively personal music style. Find out what you need at thepageant.com The list could go on, but suffice it to say that almost every bar, restaurant, and cubby hole will be hosting a New Year’s celebration of one kind or another. You can go ice skating at the Steinberg Skating Rink in Forest Park or make your way to Fubar for the New Year Eve’s Metal Bash. Or, stay home and snuggle up with someone special. However you choose to celebrate the end of 2015 and the beginning of 2016 the St. Louis City Edition wants to wish you all a Happy New Year!

Check out our Facebook page or online at www.southtownpub.net for awesome events and a peek into the incredibly delicious food we are ready to serve you!

Holiday

Facts

In the Middle Ages, Christmas celebrations were rowdy and raucous, a lot like today's Mardi Gras parties. From 1659 to 1681, the celebration of Christmas was outlawed in Boston, and law-breakers were fined five shillings. Christmas wasn't a holiday in early America—in fact Congress was in session on December 25, 1789, the country's first Christmas under the new constitution. Construction workers started the Rockefeller Center Christmas tree tradition in 1931. The Salvation Army has been sending Santa Claus-clad donation collectors into the streets since the 1890s.

Christmas was declared a federal holiday in the United States on June 26, 1870.

Facts

2015-2016

NEW YEARS The celebration of the new year is the oldest of all holidays. It was first observed in ancient Babylon about 4000 years ago. In the years around 2000 BC, the Babylonian New Year began with the first New Moon (actually the first visible cresent) after the Vernal Equinox (first day of spring). The beginning of spring is a logical time to start a new year. After all, it is the season of rebirth, of planting new crops, and of blossoming. January 1, on the other hand, has no astronomical nor agricultural significance. It is purely arbitrary.
