Session will be held at the International Photography Hall of Fame and Museum on Saturday, December 9 from 1:30 to 2:30 pm Photographer Richard Sprengeler will give a talk on his most recent project photographing St. Louis. He has spent the last two years photographing St. Louis with a variety of cameras, from an I-phone and 35mm digital to 4×5 and 8×10 inch view cameras. Topics will include 35mm shift lenses, view cameras, perspective control, viewpoints, lighting, photoshop techniques, and digital printing. Richard Sprengeler, a professional commercial photographer since 1984, transitioned into his current specialty, architectural photography, in 2000. His portfolio reflects the broad range of his considerable talent – digital and large-format, color and black-andwhite – and his diversity of interests: from contemporary commercial buildings and historic monuments to landscapes, street scenes, abandoned cars, and rock formations.

Before Dec. 31, think about how you can help your tax situation for this year. By following year-end tax tips, you can prepare in 2017 to save on taxes due April 16, 2018.

Compare standard versus itemized deductions: Your current or planned 2017 itemized deductions might be more than your standard deduction. If so, you’ll save tax dollars by itemizing. If your itemized deductions are close to your standard deduction in 2017, consider shifting some of your deductions to 2018. At that time, you might be able to itemize more. Conversely, you might know you won’t have as many itemized deductions in 2018 as you do in 2017. If so, consider shifting some deductions from next year to this year. Here are some examples of how shifting deductions can work in your favor: You can’t itemize in 2017 but can in 2018. So, consider making your annual charitable donation in January instead of December. Then, buy those items before the end of the year. However, the total of these expenses might not be close to or more than .02 of your AGI. If so, postpone these expenses until 2018, if possible. To learn which items are in this category, see Publication 529: Miscellaneous Deductions at www.irs.gov.
