How to Pick a Tax Preparer
sushi drinks en joy OPEN DAILY
Choosing a tax preparer can seem like a beauty contest - only the contestants are probably not that pretty. Yet, finding the right tax preparer can be the difference between owing nothing to forking over thousands in taxes. Thus, it's important to find the right person and avoid kissing a whole bunch of frogs before you get to your prince (or princess). Consider these steps when choosing a tax preparer: Pick a Professional such as a CPA, Attorney or Enrolled Agent. These individuals were required to go through significant training and rigorous qualification tests to gain entrance into their profession - not to mention the hours and hours of yearly continuing education they must obtain. You wouldn't take your sick child to the neighborhood "doc," a person who, while called a doc or doctor, has never even seen a medical school. Why would you trust your tax return with all of your financial information to someone who took a two-day training class? Look for High Qualifications. Pick a tax preparer who prepares tax returns fairly regular. If you work in a special industry such a healthcare, entertainment, etc., find a tax advisor who has other clients in that field or seems to have the desire to research specific tax issues for your profession. Understand Billing Rates. Some tax advisors charge by the hour, tax form/ schedule, or flat rate. Whatever the case, they should clearly explain this to you upfront. Be wary of a tax preparer who simply can't give you a good estimate of his/her total fees, or has a fee structure based on a percentage of your tax refund amount. Make sure they use sophisticated tax software. In this internet age, be wary of a tax advisor who doesn't use sophisticated tax software programs to prepare your tax return. Keep in mind, silly mathematical errors are one of the top mistakes made by taxpayers and can often cause your tax return to be audited. Pick a tax preparer who shows enthusiasm and professional presentation. This is still a "beauty contest" so make sure they look and act the part. Does the tax advisor appear to have genuine interest in doing taxes? Enthusiasm about his profession and his/her job will almost always translate into giving you good service. Also, professional presentation of your tax return is a good indicator that you have a competent tax advisor. Make sure they can explain your tax return in plain english. Although you might just want to know how much you are getting back from Uncle Sam, make sure you look for a tax advisor who will go over the return with you line by line, if necessary. This process normally does not take long, and you need to understand how the tax return flows and verify that the information is accurate. Even though the tax preparer should signs your return too, YOU are ultimately responsible for the accuracy and completeness.

SAINT LOUIS Dada and Surrealism: Rethinking Reason Currently running through April 18, 2011 at the Mildred Lane Kemper Art Museum, Teaching Gallery
The devastation wrought by World War I led to virulent critiques of reason, progress, and a kind of nationalism that had used technology for destructive ends. International Dada movements during the War, and Surrealism in the postwar period, were central to these critiques. For this Teaching Gallery exhibition, over a dozen Dada and Surrealist artworks from the collections of the Mildred Lane Kemper Art Museum and Olin Library’s Department of Special Collections will be on view. Artists represented include Man Ray, Max Ernst, Salvador Dalí, Joan Miró, and Pablo Picasso. The selected works illustrate the range of strategies used to explore the irrational, fantastic, and absurd in the twentieth century, innovations that revolutionized artistic practices in Europe and the US. This Teaching Gallery exhibition is organized by Stamos Metzidakis, professor of French and comparative literature, and John Klein, associate professor of art history, in conjunction with their course “Dada and Surrealism: Rethinking Reason,”.
