Dark Matters May 5 thru May 21 at the Stray Dog Theater

In an isolated house at the edge of a cornfield, in the mountains of Virginia, something almost beyond belief is happening to the Cleary family. When Bridget Cleary goes missing in the dead of night, her husband Michael and son Jeremy do everything within their power to help find her. Then, as suddenly as she vanished, Bridget reappears, talking about strange visitations and otherworldly beings. Is she lying, or are supernatural forces at work? Dark Matters is a suspenseful thriller about the secrets that hold families together. Dark Matters is a Stray Dog Theatre Studio Workshop Production. The annual Studio Workshop Production fulfills the Theater group’s mission to promote arts, education, and community outreach. Each year, local actors, directors, playwrights, and designers have the opportunity to propose a play that aims to stretch and assist their artistic growth. Only one submission is selected and produced each season. This year’s selection of Dark Matters, was proposed by Justin Been as the 2010-2011 Stray Dog Theatre Studio Workshop Production.

In 1969, Earth Day founder Gaylord Nelson, then a U.S. Senator from Wisconsin, proposed the first nationwide Earth Day to help put environmental issues onto the national agenda. “It was a gamble,” he recalls, “but it worked.” A year later, on April 22, 1970, the first Earth Day was celebrated both in Washington, D.C., and on college campuses throughout the country. An estimated 20 million Americans participated in events calling for a healthy, sustainable environment.

Earth Day in St. Louis

In 1989, teacher and rain forest advocate, Matt Diller, led a small group that organized the first St. Louis Earth Day Festival. The popularity and success of local and national events in 1990 for the 20th Earth Day, prompted organizers to find ways to educate St. Louisans about Earth Day, every day. In 1994, the renovated EarthWays Home opened for this purpose, later becoming Missouri Botanical Garden‘s environmental education center.
