FAIR ST. LOUIS 2011

“The City of St. Louis continues to proudly partner with the Fair Saint Louis Foundation on this great St. Louis tradition that welcomes people from near and far to our historic Riverfront. Since its inception more than 30 years ago, Fair Saint Louis has resulted in millions of dollars in economic impact while also contributing greatly to area non-profits via concession sales,” said Mayor Slay. “On behalf of the City of St. Louis, I am thrilled to join in the effort with the Fair Saint Louis Foundation to invest in and celebrate ‘America’s Biggest Birthday Party.’” The Fair Saint Louis entertainment line-up includes: • With an astounding 28 albums to its name, Fair Saint Louis welcomes The Steve Miller Band (www.stevemillerband.com) – on Saturday, July 2. • The three-time Grammy Award winning rock group who played this year’s Super Bowl pre-game, festivities, Maroon 5 (www. maroon5.com) on Sunday, July 3. • And, country rock stars Montgomery Gentry (www.montgomerygentry.com) will celebrate our nation’s independence on Monday, July 4. • Air shows will take place on all three days of Fair Saint Louis and are expected to include military and civilian performers from around the country. Fair Saint Louis will kick off at 10 a.m. on Saturday, July 2 with the 134th Veiled Prophet Parade, one of the best and longest running parades in the nation. Following the Fourth of July festivities, the celebration will continue throughout the month of July with the Celebrate St. Louis Summer Concerts, with performances on July 15/16 and July 22/23. Additional details for both Fair Saint Louis and Celebrate St. Louis Summer Concerts will be announced later.

Metropolis St. Louis, a volunteer organization dedicated to promoting the City of St. Louis, was created by a group of young residents that wanted to showcase the rich and thriving metropolitan lifestyle available in the city of St. Louis. To meet that goal the organization hosts various events throughout the city. To help visitors and residents get a taste of the city, Metropolis St. Louis conducts an East and a West architectural tour of downtown St. Louis every Saturday morning at 10:00 a.m. from April through October. The tours are only $5 per person and children 12 and under are free. No reservations, just show up! The East architectural tour is a two-hour walking tour of the Heart of Downtown Saint Louis. The tour explores the rich history and architectural legacy of the eastern side of Downtown, from the founding of the City through its modern development and continuing re-development. Tour highlights include the Old Cathedral, the Post Office District, the Wainwright Building, and the Eads Bridge. The tour moves from the past to the present as modern contributions to the City’s rich urban fabric such as the Arch and City Garden are also visited. The East tour begins outside of the Old Courthouse, opposite Kiener Plaza.

New in the Lou It’s A Night Out for young and old as the magical Veiled Prophet Parade hits the streets of downtown St. Louis on Saturday, July 2nd. Recognized as one of America’s most unique parades, this year’s spectacular begins at 4th and Washington -- winding through downtown St. Louis for almost 2 hours. With over 130 units, the Parade features hundreds of costumed characters, 8 giant helium filled balloons, 17 custom floats, marching bands, beauty queens and two very special leaders: Greg Smith will serve as this year’s Grand Marshal and St. Louis’ very own Dr. Henry Givens, Jr. of Harris Stowe State University will serve as the Honorary Grand Marshal. Among some of the floats you can expect to see, along the Parade route: “A Night at the Movies,” “A Night at the Muny,” “Backyard Stargazing,” “Swingtime.” The Veiled Prophet Parade is the opening act for three days of fun and festivities at the 31st annual Fair Saint Louis on the grounds of the Jefferson National Expansion Memorial -- aka the Gateway Arch. Over three days, you can eat, drink, and listen to The Steve Miller Band, Maroon 5 and Montgomery Gentry. There will be FIVE Fair Saint Louis Air Shows and every evening will conclude with a spectacular fireworks extravaganza. And the very best part of Fair Saint Louis -- the entertainment, fireworks and air shows are all FREE and open to St. Louisans and guests from around the country. For more information, please visit www. celebratestlouis.org. Please join us as we celebrate one of America’s greatest cities AND our Nation’s independence. For more info: http://www.vpparade.org/
