Phantom at the Symphony Befitting the spirit of Halloween The Phantom of the Opera makes his debut with the St. Louis Symphony at Powell Hall Friday, Oct 28 and Saturday Oct 29 at 7:30pm. Erected in 1925 as the St. Louis Theatre, the building now known as Powell Symphony Hall was originally a grand and glorious movie house. Since its opening in November 1925, the St. Louis Theatre had presented the best in live vaudeville as well as motion pictures. Powell Hall visits the ghosts of its past life as a movie house for the original silent film The Phantom of the Opera, accompanied by the STL Symphony conducted by Ward Stare. While the story has had many film incarnations this is a live orchestra performance accompanying the 1925 epic film staring Lon Chaney, the legendary “Man of a Thousand Faces”. Chaney created his own makeup for the part. He painted his eye sockets black, giving a skull-like impression to them. He pulled the tip of his nose up and pinned it in place with wire, enlarged his nostrils with black paint, and put a set of jagged false teeth into his mouth to complete the ghastly deformed look of the Phantom. When audiences first saw The Phantom of the Opera, they were said to have screamed or fainted at the scene where Christine pulls the concealing mask away, revealing his skull-like features to the audience. Chaney’s appearance as the Phantom in the film has been the most accurate depiction of the title character, based on the description given in the novel, where Erik the Phantom is described as having a skull-like face with a few wisps of black hair on top of his head. Not quite the lush, romantic image presented in the most recent stage and movie version of the story. For complete information on this Halloween performance please visit the web site at www.stlsymphony.org.
