3503 Roger Place (at Potomac) • 314-771-2040 This New Year’s Eve Saturday, Dec 31 celebrate First Night at Grand Center. Founded in 1976 in Boston First Night® came to St Louis in 1991. It is St. Louis’ largest, most creative New Year’s Eve celebration and it reaches mythical proportions for its 20th anniversary. First Night® - St. Louis brings the magic of this year’s theme “Xanadu” to Grand Center with music, dance, magic, comedy, activities for all ages and two fireworks displays to greet 2012. It is a potpourri of indoor and outdoor visual and performing arts on the streets and within more than a dozen venues in Grand Center. Drawing inspiration from the 1980 romantic-musical-fantasy, “Xanadu” is loosely known as a mythical place that houses the nine muses in Greek Mythology, including art, literature, music, dance and more. While the muses provide inspiration year-round in the theaters, art museums and galleries, schools, churches, restaurants and seasonal events that call Grand Center home, you might be able to catch a glimpse of these apparitions on December 31, at First Night® stirring up a little New Year’s Eve magic. The muses will transform Grand Center into a magical celebration of the arts through lights, characters, performances and activities that are sure to provide memorable experiences. Help celebrate the double anniversary of 20 years for First Night® - St. Louis and 10 years in Grand Center by adding your wish for the New Year in the form of a “sprinkle” that will help decorate the 12 foot tall artificial birthday cake. First Night® is a community celebration of the coming of the New Year expressed through the arts. For all the particulars of this year’s celebration and to plan your visit please visit firstnightstl.org stlcityedition.com • facebook.com/stlouiscityedition.com • twitter.com/stlcityedition.com • sales@stlcityedition.com • 314-267-9979

DOCTOR’S

ORDERS

It’s as simple as this: To lose weight, you have to eat fewer calories than your body uses, PERIOD!

1 lb. fat = 3,500 calories David A. Dorsey, MD

To lose 1 pound of fat in a week, you have to eat 3,500 fewer calories (that is 500 fewer calories a day), or you have to “burn off” an extra 3,500 calories. You can burn off calories by exercising or just by being more active. (Talk to your family doctor before you begin any type of exercise program. Your doctor can help you determine what kind of exercise program is right for you.) The best way to lose weight and keep it off is to eat fewer calories and be active. If you cut 250 calories from your diet each day and exercise enough to burn off 250 calories, that adds up to 500 fewer calories in one day. If you do this for 7 days, you can lose 1 pound of fat in a week.

Regular physical activity has been shown to help prevent heart disease, type 2 diabetes, osteoporosis and other chronic conditions. It is important for maintaining good health in all adults and children, regardless of whether their weight is a problem or not. Simple measures applied every day can make a significant difference over time. Here are a few examples: • Increase physical activity you are currently doing by adding 10 minutes a day • Increase exercise intensity from low to moderate. • Limit time spent online, watching TV, playing video games to less than two hours per day. • Take the stairs instead of the elevator. • Park at the far end of the parking lot and walk to your destination. • Do more household chores. • Walk or run with the dog and/or the kids. • Use an exercise machine (treadmill or bike) while watching television. • Take “active” vacations—go hiking or ride bicycles. • Walk to do errands (such as to the grocery store or post office) instead of driving. • START an exercise regimen

green GREEN NEW YEARS RESOLUTIONS 6 Ways To Really Help the Environment

from www.thedailygreen.com

your routine

WASH AND RINSE USING COLD WATER

STOP USING PLASTIC GROCERY BAGS

Did you know that only 10 percent of the energy used by a typical washing machine powers the motor? About 90 percent of the energy is used to heat the water, and most clothes will come clean in cold water. So switch your washing machine’s temperature setting. For heavily soiled clothing, change it from hot to warm, but otherwise try to wash and rinse most of your clothing in cold water.

Do you opt for paper or plastic when at the grocery store? Neither is a good choice. Twelve million barrels of oil were used to make the 88.5 billion plastic bags consumed in the United States last year. And it takes four times more energy to make paper bags. The best choice is reusable shopping bags made of cotton, nylon or durable, meshlike plastic. Put a few reusable shopping bags in your car so you have them handy on your next shopping trip. And if you happen to forget your reusable bag (as we all do!), choose paper if you will recycle it or plastic if you will reuse or recycle it.

Cost: $0

Cost: $5

CHECK YOUR TOILET FOR LEAKS Most of us would be surprised to find out that one in every five toilets leak, and since the leaks are usually silent, you probably have no idea if your toilet is leaking. A leaking toilet can waste anywhere between 30 and 500 gallons of water every day, so any leak should be repaired. To see if your toilet is leaking, put a few drops of food coloring in the toilet tank. If the dye shows up in the toilet bowl after 15 minutes or so, the toilet has a leak. Leaking is usually caused by an old or poorly fitting flapper valve.

CANCEL CATALOG MAILINGS Each year, 19 billion catalogs are mailed to American consumers. All those catalogs require more than 53 million trees and 56 billion gallons of wastewater to produce. So grab that stack of catalogs piling up on your coffee table and clear out the clutter. Visit CatalogChoice.org to put a stop to unwanted catalogs. Within 10 weeks, your mailbox will be empty of unwanted catalogs. A less cluttered mailbox means less pollution, less waste and less of the pollution that cause global warming.

Cost: $0

Cost: $0

ONLY RUN YOUR DISHWASHER WHEN FULL If you have dishwasher, use it. Running a fully loaded dishwasher -- without prerinsing the dishes -- can use a third less water than washing the dishes by hand, saving up to 10 to 20 gallons of water a day. Simply scrape large pieces of food off your dishes and let the dishwasher handle the rest. And by using the air-dry setting (instead of heat-dry), you will consume half the amount of electricity without spending a dime.

Cost: $0

YOUR REFRIGERATOR

As one of the biggest appliances in your kitchen, the refrigerator is also one of the most power hungry, accounting for 10 to 15 percent of the average home energy bill each month. Get your fridge running in tiptop shape. First, set the refrigerator thermostat to maintain a temperature between 38 and 42 degrees (F). This temperature will protect your food from spoiling while saving electricity. Twice a year, clean the condenser coil at the back of your fridge. Condenser coils tend to get dusty, making them less efficient.
