You don’t have to be a diehard fan to appreciate the start of the baseball season. For the winter-weary, Opening Day is a sign that spring has finally sprung. It’s also a day when baseball history is made—perhaps more often than you think. These Opening Day facts will get you in the mood to hear those immortal words for the first time this year: “Play ball!” Snowball Fight: On Opening Day in 1907, the New York Giants faced off against the Phillies at New York City’s Polo Grounds after a heavy snowstorm. When the Giants fell behind, disgruntled fans began flinging snowballs onto the field, forcing the umpire to call a forfeit in the Phillies’ favor. Presidential Pitches: On the first day of the 1910 season, William Howard Taft became the first president to throw the ceremonial first pitch. Since then, every president besides Jimmy Carter has thrown at least one ceremonial first ball for Opening Day, the All-Star Game or the World Series. Rival Riot: Brooklyn’s Washington Park was the scene of an Opening Day riot on April 11, 1912. With the Brooklyn Dodgers down 18-3 to their rival, the New York Giants, fans stormed the field and delayed the game, which was eventually called on account of darkness in the sixth inning. Lucky Feller: There has only been one no-hitter in Opening Day history. Cleveland pitcher Bob Feller, then just 21 years old, threw it against the Chicago White Sox at Comiskey Park on April 16, 1940. Baseball's First All-Star Game Red-Handed: Boston Braves fans sat down to an unpleasant surprise on Opening Day in 1946. The outfield stands had recently received a fresh coat of red paint, but cold, damp weather had prevented it from drying. Hundreds of angry, paint-stained spectators marched to the Braves’ offices. The team agreed to pay their cleaning bills and made a public apology in a newspaper ad. Making History: Jackie Robinson broke the color barrier on Opening Day in 1947, becoming the first African American to play for a Major League team. The 28-yearold made his debut at Ebbets Field, playing first base for the Brooklyn Dodgers. Switch Pitcher: Harry Truman was the only president to throw out left-handed and right-handed first pitches on Opening Day. He showcased his ambidextrous talents on April 18, 1950. Out of the Park: Hank Aaron of the Atlanta Braves hit his 714th home run on Opening Day in 1974, tying Babe Ruth for most career homers. He beat Ruth’s record later that week and reached 755 by the end of this career. Aaron’s record was not eclipsed until Barry Bonds hit his 756th home run in 2007. Opening Streak: On Opening Day in 1974, several naked fans rushed onto the field at Chicago’s Comiskey Park, disrupting the game and inciting violence in the stands. Famous Firsts: Hall of Famer Frank Robinson and Ken Griffey Jr. share the record for most career home runs on the first day of the season, with eight Opening Day homers each. Star Starter: Hall of Famer Tom Seaver has started the most Opening Day games in history—11 for the Mets, three for the Reds and two for the White Sox.

SPORTS BAR & GRILL
Studio Design: Contemporary Furniture February 10, 2012 – April 8, 2012 Craft Alliance in the Kranzberg Arts Center Studio Design: Contemporary Furniture, an exhibition featuring contemporary wood furniture designed by Brian Ferrell, Kimberly Winkle, and Matt Keim, opened at Craft Alliance’s gallery in the Kranzberg Arts Center on Friday, February 10, 2012 and runs through April 8, 2012. Each of the works featured is meticulously hand-crafted and studio designed. The works feature abstract forms, sleek designs, colorful surfaces and combined materials while still maintaining an intentional functionality as furniture or other interior objects used in a home. Each piece is a one of a kind, handmade object. In other words they are studio design versus manufactured. The works of Kimberly Winkle, Brian Ferrell, and Matt Keim feature abstract forms, colorful surfaces, and combined materials. An element of play is evident in the subtly colored furniture of Kimberly Winkle, while Brian Ferrell emphasizes clean lines and tapered angles to create compositions in wood and metal. A Craft Alliance instructor, Matt Keim has been experimenting with wood for over thirty years. Brian Ferrell is an artist who creates sculpture in functional forms, designing one-of-a-kind furniture and custom tableware. Since 2000, his work has been regularly exhibited in group and solo exhibits on a national level, published in “500 Tables” by Lark Books, and purchased by private collectors in the US and Europe. Kimberly Winkle employs traditional furniture making techniques and materials to build forms and structures with results that are often untraditional. She uses hardwood, paint, and graphite to create forms that are generally streamlined in order to better play the role of an empty canvas for color and line. Matt Keim works with wood in various forms to create functional and non-functional pieces. He sought out wood turning as a way to express myself and to expose the form within. He searches for simple forms that do not take away from the natural beauty of the wood itself. Craft Alliance is the only art institution dedicated to contemporary craft in the St. Louis region. The non-profit organization, located in the Delmar Loop and in the Kranzberg Arts Center in Grand Center, provides inspiration and education in contemporary craft to a national community of artists, collectors, and students. For more information, for more information about the Craft Alliance and its programs please visit www.craftalliance.org

The cost of gas continues to rise and from the looks of things, it’s not slowing down anytime soon. To help get the most bang for your transportation buck, we’ve collected 10 tips to help you save gas and money. 1. Brake correctly: Cars use the most gas when they accelerate. While this may seem obvious, in somewhat heavy traffic this can mean burning through a lot of gas. It’s fairly easy to maintain a speed in a long line of cars without using your brakes-instead, pay attention to the cars in front you and anticipate when to slightly ease of the gas. This will keep you from losing momentum when you hit the brakes. In heavy traffic, this will result in 10-20% better gas mileage. 2. Use cruise control: If your car is equipped with cruise control and there isn’t much traffic, you’ll save gas if you turn it on. It keeps your speed constant, which means you won’t have to keep accelerating and use more gas. 3. Shift to neutral when still: When idling at a stoplight or in a parking light, shift into neutral. This reduces transmission strain and gives the transmission some time to cool down. 4. Drop extra weight: The heavier the car, the more gas it takes to move it. Remove heavy items that’ve been collecting dust in your trunk-it’s a simple thing that will instantly save you money. Bonus tip: Don’t fill up until you’re on empty since gas is heavy too. 5. Pick the best route: If your commute involves lots of stoplights, it might not be the most fuel-efficient route. Stopping a lot only increases the amount of gas you use. Look for low-traffic highways or back roads. 6. Turn off the AC: As you probably know, running the air conditioner impacts your car’s overall fuel efficiency. So if you can bear it, try not to turn it on. If you must, turn it off 5-10 minutes before reaching your destination. The car will stay cool enough for that short amount of time. Bonus tip: always park in the shadethat way, your car won’t have to work as hard to get cool.

10 Ways to Save Gas (and Money)!
7. Remove your ski rack: Unless you’re using the ski, bicycle, or luggage rack on the roof every week, remove it. It increases the wind resistance on your car which results in more gas used. 8. Carpool: The amount of gas used per person is halved each time you carpool to work with a co-worker. Not only are you saving gas and money, you get the added bonus of cruising in the carpool lane! 9. Check your air filter: At any given time, almost 25% of cars need to replace their air filter. Doing so can improve gas mileage by 10%! 10. Drive slower: It’s true: you use less gas when you drive slower. In fact, for every five miles per hour you reduce highway speed, you reduce fuel consumption by 7%.
