LANTERN FESTIVAL: ART BY DAY, MAGIC BY NIGHT Presented by Emerson
The Missouri Botanical Garden brings an unprecedented international exhibition to St. Louis for a limited run this summer: “Lantern Festival: Art by Day, Magic by Night” featuring elaborate, illuminated works of art from China. The Festival will allow visitors to experience one of China’s most treasured events and ancient traditions – the annual lantern festival. The exhibition offers visitors a unique opportunity to witness a spectacle rarely staged outside of Asia. The striking sets, crafted primarily of colorful silks and molded steel, showcase Chinese culture, traditions and symbolism through larger-than-life displays lit for evening viewing. “When most people think of a Chinese ‘lantern,’ they immediately think of a small, round, hanging paper lantern,” said Lynn Kerkemeyer, special exhibits and events manager at the Missouri Botanical Garden. “Visitors will be overwhelmed when they see what our ‘lanterns’ actually are. These are incredible, vivid, elaborate sets created from thousands of pieces to form amazing, largescale works of art. When illuminated at night, they are nothing short of awe-inspiring!” Each lantern set portrays an aspect of Chinese culture, history and tradition. Mythical dragons, traditional symbols of the Chinese people, are represented in many forms, from the mighty Welcoming Dragon to the towering Dragon Embracing the Pillars to the replication of Beijing’s intricate Nine-Dragon Mural. Stroll through the Garden at dusk to experience the ambiance and elements of traditional lantern festivals in Asia. Visitors can purchase traditional crafts from Chinese artisans at the outdoor Lantern Festival Bazaar and watch nightly stage performances. Experience “Lantern Festival: Art by Day, Magic by Night” now through August 19 at the Missouri Botanical Garden, 4344 Shaw Blvd. For complete information about the Festival and all the activities available please visit www.mobot.org/ lanternfestival or call (314) 577-5100.

Ten July 4th Celebrations 1. Fair St. Louis: Fair St. Louis festivities are July 4, 6 & 7 under the Gateway Arch. Kids will enjoy the games and crafts at the K-Town Kids Zone. There's fair food to fit any taste and the air shows are back this year. Most visitors plan their day around the free concerts and fireworks. Heart, Third Eye Blind and Dierks Bentley are this year's headliners. And of course the Fair's fireworks display is not to be missed! Read more about Fair St. Louis. 2. St. Charles Riverfest: St. Charles has played an important role in American history and the town likes to show off its community pride at a celebration called Riverfest. It's held each year in Frontier Park on the banks of the Missouri River. Riverfest is a fun way to celebrate the 4th with carnival rides, a parade and fireworks.
Enjoy Food, Friends & fun on our outdoor Patio!

3. Hertiage & Freedom Fest, O'Fallon, MO: O'Fallon, Missouri pulls out all the stops for its Heritage & Freedom Fest at the Ozzie Smith Sports Complex. The celebration features an impressive line up of nationally known musicians, including David Nail and Vertical Horizon. Of course there's also a parade, carnival, kids activities, food and fireworks. Read more about O'Fallon Heritage & Freedom Fest. 4. Webster Groves Community Days: One day just isn't enough to celebrate Independence Day in Webster Groves. Community Days is a four-day celebration featuring a carnival, BBQ, parade and fireworks. It's truly an old-fashioned event that draws visitors from around the St. Louis area. The festival's held July 1st through 4th at Memorial Park, just south of Interstate 44 off the Elm Avenue exit. 5. Alton's Mississippi River Fireworks Festival: The town of Alton is a pure slice of Americana, so it's hard to find a better place for an Independence Day festival. Beyond the festival, there's plenty to see and do in and around town (see Top Things to Do Around Alton, Illinois). Plus, because Alton likes to hold its celebration early, you can hit another local celebration on the 4th. Alton's Mississippi River Fireworks Festival is held at Riverfront Park. There's food, beer, live entertainment and a big fireworks display, set against the beautiful Clark Bridge. 6. Fourth of July Celebration, Ellisville: For West County residents, Bluebird Park in Ellisville is the place to be on July 4. The event keeps with solid traditions, with vendors selling hot dogs, brats, ice cream and other favorite festival foods. There's also live music and fireworks. 7. Rockin' on the Landing: July 4th on Laclede's Landing is filled with live music, food and drinks. Top local bands will be playing on outdoor stages from 1 p.m. until 11 p.m. Street vendors will be selling all kinds of food or you can always stop in at one of the Landing's many restaurants like Morgan Street Brewery, Hannegan's or Jake's Steaks. The Landing is also a great location to watch the fireworks from Fair St. Louis. 8. Kirkwood Freedom Festival: Residents and visitors will gather in Kirkwood Park on July 4 for the city's annual Freedom Festival. Everyone is invited to enjoy an evening of live music, food and fireworks. 9. Chesterfield Celebration & Fireworks: Chesterfiled holds its Independence Day celebration on the parking lot of Chesterfield Mall on the northwest side, between Macy's and Dillard's. There will be children's activities, live music, food and fireworks. Everyone is encouraged to bring blankets or lawn chairs. 10. Ferguson Family Fun Festival: Ferguson celebrates the 4th of July with an all-day celebration for the whole family at January Wabash Park. There's a parade, children's entertainment, food, music and fireworks.

Q: If I get my phone wet, what's the best way to bring it back to life? A: Even if a wet cellphone seems dead, there's a good chance it can be resuscitated. Just make sure you act fast--the longer the water sits inside, the greater the likelihood it will destroy the phone for good. This is a DIY moment. While consumers are conditioned to send back broken merchandise, your phone's warranty probably doesn't cover water damage. And you may not have much luck pulling a fast one on your phone company--most of today's phones come with a "water sticker" that permanently changes color if it gets wet. The first step: Immediately cut the power by removing the battery. I know it's tempting, but resist the urge to power up your phone to see if it works-just turning it on can short out the circuits. If you have a GSM phone (the type used by AT&T and T-Mobile), you'll want to remove the SIM card as well. Even if your phone turns out to be beyond repair, the SIM should retain a lot of its onboard information, such as the contacts in your phone book. With the battery safely set aside, you now have one goal--dry your phone, and dry it fast. If you let the moisture evaporate naturally, the chance of corrosion damaging the phone's innards increases. Instead, blow or suck the water out. But don't use a hair dryer--its heat can fry your phone's insides. Instead, opt for a can of compressed air, an air compressor set to a low psi or a vacuum cleaner (a wet/dry Shop-Vac would be perfect). The idea is to use air to push or pull moisture out through the same channels it entered. Finally, use a desiccant to wick away any leftover moisture. The most convenient choice is uncooked rice. Just leave the phone (and its disconnected battery) submerged in a bowl of grains overnight. If you're worried about rice dust getting inside your phone, you can instead use the packets of silica gel that often come stuffed in the pockets of new clothes. But acting fast is far more important than avoiding a little dust, so don't waste time shopping if you don't already have a drawer full of silica gel. The most important thing to remember is to avoid heat. That means no hair dryers, ovens, microwaves or extended periods in direct sunlight. While heat will certainly evaporate the moisture, it could also warp components and melt adhesives. Those fragile glues are also why you'll want to avoid dunking the phone in rubbing alcohol (an oftÂprescribed tip on the Web). Alcohol is a solvent and can dissolve the internal adhesives. (If you drop your phone in the toilet, it's okay to wipe the outside with alcohol to disinfect it.) One final, perhaps surprising, note: If your phone gets soaked in salt water, you should probably flush the whole thing in fresh water before it dries. When salt water evaporates, it leaves crystals that can damage a phone's fragile components. Just be sure to remove the battery before flooding the device.
