Valentine’s Day When did it all start? There are various theories on the origin of Valentine’s Day, but the most popular dates back to the time of the Roman Empire during the reign of Claudius II, 270 AD. Claudius didn’t want men to marry during wartime because he believed single men made better soldiers. Bishop Valentine went against his wishes and performed secret wedding ceremonies. For this, Valentine was jailed and then executed by order of the Emperor on February 14. While in jail, he wrote a love note to the jailor’s daughter signing it, “From your Valentine.” Sound familiar?
Valentine’s Day-related History • The ancient Romans celebrated the Feast of Lupercalia on February 14th in honor of Juno, the queen of the Roman gods and goddesses. Juno was also the goddess of women and marriage. • Many believe the ‘X’ symbol became synonymous with the kiss in medieval times. People who couldn’t write their names signed in front of a witness with an ‘X.’ The ‘X’ was then kissed to show their sincerity. • Girls of medieval times ate bizarre foods on St. Valentine’s Day to make them dream of their future spouse. • In the Middle Ages, young men and women drew names from a bowl to see who would be their Valentine. They would wear this name pinned onto their sleeves for one week for everyone to see. This was the origin of the expression “to wear your heart on your sleeve.” • In 1537, England’s King Henry VII officially declared February 14th the holiday of St. Valentine’s Day. 6

While you’re traveling
• Eat carefully if you’re going to a country with an increased risk of traveler’s diarrhea. Steaming-hot, well-cooked food is usually safest. Avoid eating foods from street vendors, unpasteurized dairy products and raw or uncooked seafood. Peel fruits yourself. Drink water from commerciallysealed bottles or drink carbonated beverages. Avoid ice. Use bottled water when you brush your teeth. • If you’re going to a country with a risk of malaria, your doctor may prescribe preventive medicine for malaria. Remember to start taking your malaria medicine before you leave on your trip, take it during your travels and keep taking it for 4 weeks after you get home. • If you’re going to a country with an increased risk of mosquito-borne disease, protect yourself against insects. Insect repellents that contain DEET work the best. Wear permethrin-coated clothing and use bed nets while you sleep.
Things to include in a first-aid kit for traveling
• Your prescription medicines, in their original containers. • Medicine for diarrhea and upset stomach. Pack bismuth subsalicylate (brand name: Pepto Bismol), loperamide (brand name: Imodium) and antacids. • Cough and cold medicines. • Pain medicines, such as aspirin, Tylenol, Aleve, Motrin. • Decongestants and antihistamines for allergies. • Antibiotic ointment, adhesive bandages, hydrocortisone cream, sunscreen with a sun protection factor (SPF) of at least 15 and lip balm. • Medicine for motion sickness, such as Dramamine, and an antinausea drug like promethazine. Acetazolamide may help prevent altitude sickness. • Scissors, tweezers, nail clippers, pocket knife, thermometer and a mirror. • Hand wipes and hand sanitizers. Reference: familydoctor.org

Exercise Facts! Exercise! Exercise! This is what we are told every day on television, books, and magazines. It is wonderful for our health. However, some people need a bit more nudging to get the ball rolling. If you are one of these people, here are 10 reasons to begin exercising today. Exercise and Energy Level
Studies have shown that if you exercise every day, you will increase your energy level. Asa-matter of fact, those that exercise feel lethargic and tired on days they skip a work-out routine.
Exercise and Depression
Exercising releases endorphins into the body that help fight depression. The more you exercise, the less depressed you will be.
Exercising and Weight
Exercise and Strong Bones
As we get older, our bones tend to become more brittle. However, exercising and putting consistent pressure on your bones can help to make them stronger. Women who regularly exercise throughout their life have less problems with osteoporosis.
If you are overweight, exercising is one of the best ways to lose. The more calories you burn when you exercise, the more fat you will lose. It is simple physics. Muscle burns more calories than fat. This means that the more you exercise, the more muscle you add to your body. The more muscle you have, the more calories you will burn doing nothing at all.
Exercise Improves Self Image
Exercise and Sex
Although we would like to not believe it, body image is connected to self image. If we don’t like our body, we won’t have a positive self image. Exercising helps to improve that self image along with body image.
Exercise has been shown to be a great aphrodisiac. There are many people who believe massages and soft music awaken sexuality, but exercise actually does a better job. The more you exercise, the more active you will feel. The more active you feel, the more you will feel like having sex.
Exercising and Sleeping
Exercise and the Heart
As long as you exercise two hours before bed, exercise can improve the quality of your sleep. If you have a problem with insomnia, try beginning a morning exercise routine.
Exercising and Socializing
Exercising is a great way to meet and get together with friends. If you go to a gym you will meet people that have similar priorities as your own. If you exercise with a work-out buddy, this time is great to talk and catch up on your lives. 8
|
Exercising not only works your muscles, but also your heart. Your heart is the most important muscle/organ you have. It is what keeps you alive. The more you exercise your heart, the less risk you have for a heart attack or stroke.
Exercise and Immune System
People who regularly exercise have a better chance of fighting off illnesses and infections than those that are sedentary. Exercise has actually been shown to boost the immune system.
