Cinco De Mayo Cinco de Mayo (Spanish for “fifth of May”) is a celebration held on May 5. It is celebrated in the United States and regionally in Mexico, primarily in the state of Puebla, where the holiday is called El Día de la Batalla de Puebla (English: The Day of the Battle of Puebla). It originated with Mexican-American communities in the American West as a way to commemorate the cause of freedom and democracy during the first years of the American Civil War, and today the date is observed in the United States as a celebration of Mexican heritage and pride. In the state of Puebla, the date is observed to commemorate the Mexican army's unlikely victory over French forces at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862, under the leadership of General Ignacio Zaragoza Seguín. Cinco de Mayo is not Mexico's Independence Day ... the most important national patriotic holiday in Mexico ... which is celebrated on September 16.

Every Mother’s Day weekend May 10-12 over 16,000 visitors attend Art Fair at Laumeier. During this three-day event 150 of the nation’s best artists will exhibit art in a variety of mediums. The juried Art Fair at Laumeier is a nationally acclaimed fine art and craft fair held at Laumeier Sculpture Park, one of a few open-air museums. Art Fair is also one of the first big art fairs of the year in the St. Louis region. If you still need to find that perfect and unique gift for Mom you can choose from works of art in ceramics, fiber/textiles, glass, jewelry, mixed media, painting, photography/digital, printmaking/drawing, sculpture and wood. This is a highly competitive juried show. The art fair receives over 700 applications, of which 150 are selected to participate. Judges award a total of $11,000 in prizes, sponsored in part by the City of Sunset Hills to those artists achieving excellence. In addition to the artwork, food and drink from a variety of vendors is available and you’ll find exciting music and entertainment throughout the weekend. On Friday several wineries are participating in The Art of the Vine wine tasting. On Saturday Schlafly will be hosting The Art of the Ale. Art Fair at Laumeier runs from Friday, May 10 thru Sunday, May 12. For complete information about this event please visit www.laumeiersculpturepark.org

SLOW YOUR PACE - Don’t over exert yourself. If you must engage yourself physically, slow your pace and choose the coolest time of day to do so. STAY INDOORS - If there is no air-conditioning in the home, avoid the upper floors. Remember, heat naturally rises. DRINK PLENTY OF WATER - Avoid dehydrating beverages (caffeinated drinks and alcohol). Iced herbal teas or healthy juice bars can be quite refreshing. WEAR WHITE - Choose white or lighter color clothing over black and darker shades that tend to absorb the heat, whereas white reflects the heat. EAT LESS - Avoid eating large meals. Eating more frequently with smaller portions will be more easily digested. No need to stress your body further during a heat spell with a sluggish tummy. REST - Lay down for a few minutes with a refrigerated face mask to refresh your body. INSTALL A DE-HUMIDFIER IN YOUR LIVING QUARTERS. Sticky humidty in the air factors into heat discomfort. QUICK COOL DOWN REMEDY - Apply ice packs or cold compresses to your pulse points.

NEW MEDIA SERIES—HIRAKI SAWA: MIGRATION EXHIBIT
Friday, May 3, 2013 Until Sunday, September 8, 2013 At The Saint Louis Art Museum In Forest Park.In Migration, a seven-minute digital video, men and women depicted at Lilliputian scale, along with miniature horses, elephants, and camels, traverse the interior of a life-size apartment. Sawa borrowed pioneering photographer Eadweard Muybridge’s late 19th-century studies of human and animal locomotion, animating the walking gaits of Muybridge’s subjects across the window sills, floors, and countertops of the Japanese artist’s flat in London. Sawa merges 21st-century digital technology with the 19th-century beginnings of photography to produce an intriguingly captivating, imaginary world in black and white.
