from The Avalon Collection by Thibaut

he Avalon Collection by Thibaut embraces a playful zest through imaginative wallpaper designs and dynamic print and woven fabrics. Infused with a retro vibe and carefree spirit, each print is awash in style, vitality and vivid hues. These designs are both fashion-forward and trendy, ready to accent your existing palette. Bold prints accompanied by simpler versions allow for a full range of versatility throughout any design.

Comprised of impressionistic florals and graceful stems of graphite, Morristown (a) enraptures both traditional and modern domains. Designed to endure, Marathon is a versatile cotton that spans the arc from animalistic to geometric and everything in between.

Tranquility lives in the hanging branches of Hana, painted gingerly upon a burnished and striated backdrop. Crafted with the shapes and colors of the Avalon Collection in mind, Carole is a thoughtful and versatile retro print graphic.

Modernized and sleek, Hampton Pond's interpretative flower print is a spirited departure from traditional florals stamped upon a sumptuous linen blend. Current provides movement and texture with the theme of passage and prevailing timeless notes.

Rich offerings abound in Spring, with leaves stamped upon a crafty wallcovering or lush cut velvet in soft and bright pastels, reflecting the optimism and carefree style of Spring.

Languid strokes of decidedly retro colors are softly washed together in Island Ikat, giving a sense of energy and life.

A veritable garden of whimsy and peace, Butterfly Garden blends butterflies, flowers and seagrass upon a rice-paper like non-woven wallcovering. Fun bursts of cotton chenille break up the rhythm of Cotton Tails, in luxurious and sweet hues. 10

Norwich Paisley is a modern and simplified paisley motif unified by stencil-like lines in an airy repeat. Candice embodies leisure and sophistication, as picturesque blooms ascend with painterly brushstrokes in uncomplicated hues and tones.

Eco-friendly Glitter Grass has been carefully crafted with seductively staggered pops of metallic light within the fine sisal weave. Mimicking classic painted tile effects, Darien's small-scale fleur de lys print is embedded within a dreamy trellis of watercolor strokes. We’re beginning to see a consumer re-evaluation of what it means to still live comfortably, yet finding a balance with changing technology and our personalized space. Consumers are looking for a sense of home in a growing global society. In the book Interior Trends 2011, released by IMM Cologne, designers are re-balancing and creating innovative new products that combine technology with environmentally eco-conscious guidelines. One example in furniture is using simple angular structures in natural warm woods and colors of ash grays or blacks followed by splashes of yellow or orange. Another is combining art and design to work with the virtual world in our real world, taking metals and plastics that combine to form a changeable surface. Colors are very neutral such as grays, black with using the warm side of the color wheel to compliment. What all of this means is that it’s a very exciting, innovative time for all of us as designers and consumers.

Platinum emerald and diamond earrings circa 1920's. From Timekeepers

very fashion-conscious woman deserves to own an exquisite piece of estate jewelry. What, exactly, is estate jewelry? Estate jewelry simply means that the jewelry was previously owned, often part of a valuable collection that once belonged to a wealthy socialite. For example, the jewelry collection owned by Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis was auctioned after her death, and it is considered to be among the most important estate jewelry collections. St. Louis diamond jeweler Mary Pillsbury, owner of The Mary Pillsbury Company, one of St. Louis’s leading diamond jewelers, is the proud owner of four pieces of fine jewelry from the Jacqueline Onassis Collection. The Duchess Of Windsor amassed over 200 pieces of designer jewelry during her lifetime as the wife of The Duke Of Windsor, and the collection brought an amazing sale price at a Southeby’s auction of more than $53,000,000. In St. Louis, there are many fine jewelers who have estate jewelry collections from various periods such as the Edwardian Era and The Victorian Era. Curt Parker Jewelers and Timekeepers have some very elegant and elaborate estate jewelry pieces such as diamond brooches, necklaces, bracelets and earrings. Huffords Jewelry and The Diamond Shop, as well as Small World Antiques, also carry beautiful estate jewelry that is one-of-a-kind and totally unique.

18k gold- hand made bangle with 1.50 diamond circling entire bracelet. From Small World Antiques.

Clayton-based auction house, Ivey-Selkirk, is also another good source for fine estate jewelry. My emerald-cut diamond engagement ring is an estate piece and it is my most prized possession because the diamond is flawless and the setting is reminiscent of a bygone era. Ladies "Estate" 18k Yellow Gold 135.2dwt And Black Coral Bracelet with Twelve Brilliant Cut Diamonds. From Curt Parker Jewelers

Best of all, estate jewelry, particularly the antique estate jewelry that is more than 100 years old, has outstanding workmanship and is of the highest quality that sets it apart from the newer jewelry designs. Isn’t it time to find your favorite piece of elegant estate jewelry?

WINTER BEAUTY TRENDS by Robyn Walker

22

Uptown Magazine

January- February 2011

C

old winter weather has arrived, so it’s essential that you provide extra protection and nourishment for your skin with highperformance skincare treatments. You’ll discover for yourself that these professional-quality beauty products and skincare treatments will help you look good, feel more attractive __ and add an element of natural beauty to your well-groomed appearance. For starters, make sure your skin is in good condition. We recommend making an appointment for a professional facial at Natural Beauty of Ladue or Samantha’s Other Place. Natural Beauty of Ladue owner Cynthia Spiro says, "To keep your skin healthy, I recommend deep cleansing facials every four to six weeks, peels such as the Alpha-Beta peel formulated by Dr. Dennis Gross, avoiding sun exposure, not smoking, maintaining adequate fluid intake, exercising regularly, maintaining a regular skin care routine, washing your face twice a day and eating healthy."

pollutants. What can you do to delay the effects of aging? If your skin does show some subtle signs of aging such as age spots, crow‘s feet and superficial wrinkles, don’t just assume that you need a face lift or facial rejuvenation such as dermabrasion, collagen or botox treatments. There are many effective skincare products on the market that can help to reduce signs of aging on your skin without invasive cosmetic surgery. Among our favorites are Orlane Paris Nuit super creams which are infused with caffeine and chufa extract. They’ll help smooth fine lines. ReVive is another leading skincare brand that helps recapture the natural radiance of youth, which is key to looking years younger. La Prairie skincare products skincare products also work wonders to delay the effects of aging. Chanel Sublimage is a collection of anti-aging skincare products that is also beneficial in protecting your delicate skin from harsh winter weather. These products are available at Neiman Marcus. One of our favorite skincare brands is Murad, which is available at Samantha’s Other Place in Clayton. You’ll especially like Murad moisturizers. They keep your skin healthy by replenishing naturally occurring skin lipids, improving moisture retention and offering protection from the elements.

"To keep your skin healthy, I recommend deep cleansing facials every four to six weeks, peels such as the Alpha-Beta peel formulated by Dr. Dennis Gross, avoiding sun exposure, not smoking, maintaining adequate fluid intake, exercising regularly, maintaining a regular skin care routine, washing your face twice a day and eating healthy." Women of all ages know that good skincare begins at home with morning and evening skin cleansing, toning and moisturizing, but if you add a monthly facial to your skincare regimen, you’ll improve not only the look of your skin, but you’ll also delay the aging process. The beauty of a professional facial is that your skin undergoes deep cleansing to eliminate harmful residue and pollutants that can build up on your skin and clog your pores. One of the must-have facials is a deep-cleansing facial which is highly effective at removing all of the residue that builds up on your skin and clogs your pores. Once you’ve had an opportunity to experience a professional deep-cleansing facial, you’ll most likely add a monthly professional facial to your beauty routine.

Did you know that your skin is susceptible to damaging rays from the sun even in winter? To protect your skin from the damaging rays of the sun, you should always wear a sunscreen on your face and body that has at least an SPF15 rating. Dermatologists recommend that you apply a sunscreen every day, even when the sun isn’t shining. Your dermatologist can prescribe an effective sunscreen for you or you can purchase an over-the-counter sunscreen. Also avoid direct exposure to sunlight and wear a hat and sunglasses. Basically, a sunscreen helps prevent long-term damage caused by the sun’s harmful UVA rays, which are linked to skin aging, wrinkles and, potentially, skin cancers.

High-performance skincare products can be an amazing beauty boost for improving the look and feel of your skin. For a highly effective skin care regimen, rely on Nouveau Serre skincare products from Natural Beauty of Ladue. The Multi-Peptide Serum nourishes your skin from the inside out. The face moisturizer hydrates your skin and protects it from environmental

We think you’ll find all of these high-performance skincare products to be highly beneficial and very effective for protecting your skin from harsh winter weather.

The Little Black Dress by Robyn Walker

What does LBD stand for? If you’re a fashion observer, you probably know that LBD stands for “The Little Black Dress”. The idea behind the little black dress is that every woman should have one or two black evening or black cocktail dresses that will be fashionable, chic and suitable for any and every social occasion. The fashion experts will tell you that the little black dress should be designed in a classic and tasteful way, rather than flashy or trendy, so that the dress can be worn season after season and accessorized with a pair of black party pumps and a jeweled black satin evening bag. You can always dress up the little black dress with glamorous jewelry, particularly diamonds and colorful gem stones.

Dress by Michael Kors

Anyone in the fashion business would agree that the little black dress is one of the most important fashion essentials in a woman’s wardrobe, and it’s as basic and as timeless as a strand of precious pearls.

Michael Kors designs two dramatically different black dresses. One of the dresses is very modern in its styling and is considered to be somewhat hip and trendy. It is a black crepe jersey dress with the unexpected touch of black leather at the shoulder and waist. The other little black dress by Michael Kors is very feminine, a simple sheath dress designed with romantic black lace against a neutral background. Both of these little black dresses are some of the season’s luxe looks in sophisticated black. Isn’t it time that you added one of these little black designer dresses to your designer wardrobe?

The concept of the little black dress actually dates back to the 1920s dress designs of French fashion icon, Coco Chanel. Fortunately, the women’s fashion tradition of wearing the little black dress has endured throughout the years and is reinterpreted by numerous fashion designers every season. Our favorite little black dress is by famed fashion designer Narciso Rodriguez, who has created a dramatic and daring black evening dress that will definitely set you apart from the crowd. This eye-catching black cocktail dress from Neiman Marcus is designed to flatter your figure and add an aura of elegance to your look. We think you’ll agree that this little black dress is among the most exciting and dramatic new black dresses of the season. Neiman Marcus Fashion Director Ken Downing says, “At a less-thanordinary cost, this Narciso Rodriguez dress flaunts a good figure in more ways than one.”

Beaver Creek escape to

by Linda Spall

S

aturday afternoon, December 4, I glanced at the television, taking a break from the weekend house chores. There on the screen was the Audi Birds of Prey World Cup Ski Race amidst the beautiful setting of Beaver Creek Colorado. The resort area played host to the three days of racing including Downhill, Super G and Giant Slalom but what impressed me the most was the perfect powdery snow and the stunningly lovely scenery.

instructors. With an average annual snowfall of 311 inches, 300 days of sunshine, the elevation at the base is 8,100 ft and the top reaches 11, 440 ft, giving perfect powder snow conditions. There are 17 lifts, 1,815 acres and the runs which divide as 19% beginners, 43% intermediate and 38% expert. For two weeks in February of 2015, the World Alpine Ski Championships will feature men’s and women’s racing on these mountain terrains .

Nestled in the Colorado Rocky Mountains, Beaver Creek blends elegance and sophistication with charm and warmth while offering a combination of activities and events that will satisfy any passion. Skiing, shopping, arts, fine dining and world renown hotels are all a part of the area and every offering is top of the line. Beaver Creek may be very familiar to you, President Gerald Ford had his home here, complete with the secret service section, presidential seal in the foyer and the indoor swimming pool. In fact, when I was there with my children years ago, my then eight year old son, Jamie, struck up a conversation with a muscle-bound, very good looking man in a the heated swim pool at one of the resorts. I took him aside and warned him about talking to strangers. Jamie assured me all was well because the gentleman who had been kindly talking to him was one of Ford's secret service agents! As of February 2010, the house of Gerald Ford's was for sale for 13 million dollars, The late Steven Fosset, the explorer, also resided in Beaver Creek.

Shoppers will find that Beaver Creek actually has 3 distinct villages on the mountains and two towns as it's base, Edwards and Bachelor Gulch. Each village has its own unique character and you can travel around the 3 villages with Beaver Creek' complimentary shuttle service for guests staying within the Beaver Creek's resort. As you stroll on the heated cobblestones in the quaint picturesque Beaver Creek Village, your leisurely window shopping tantalizes your senses as boutiques and galleries display sculptures and paintings Western art and fine jewelry and glass including Chihuly and Darni.

Snow aficionados will enjoy the world class ski and snowboarding school, the variety of ski slopes which range from beginners to the challenging including the Birds of Prey downhill course, ice skating in the year round outdoor rink, dog sledding , snowshoe walks and cross-country trekking, all with the assistance of over 400 guides and

If enjoying the nightlife is your cup of tea, the Vilar Performing Arts Center located in Beaver Creek Village hosts symphonies, ballet companies, film, Broadway musicals, comedy, and is the perfect evening activity after a day on the slopes. One of the favorite late night hot spots is the Coyote Cafe, a popular locals hangout, with live music, great drinks and you even can see the free ski movies. The Dusty Boot Steakhouse & Saloon is a great watering hole known for their fantastic happy hours. The Osprey Lounge serves small plates of tapas until 9pm. wine and the perfect steak. Beaver Creek Chophouse offers incredible views of the mountains while you dine on their American fare. You'll find it all with sushi, crepes, Italian in addition to the fine restaurants in the hotels such as the Grouse Mountain Grill in the Pines Lodge or the D'Oro Italiano Ristorante off the lobby of The Charter Resort in Beaver Creek. After a long day of skiing, relax and enjoy the aptly named Bachelor Gulch Spa located in the Ritz Carlton, in Bachelor Gulch. This luxurious spa sits comfortably in the White River National Forest, with the natural surroundings, impeccable service and fitness, wellness, beauty and therapeutic services for everyone's body and soul. The signature rock Grotto is the setting for a soak in the hot tub, but the awe-inspiring views of the mountain are unforgettable. Recently named "Top Resort, Mainland U.S." by CondĂŠ Nast Traveler in its 2010 Readers' Choice Awards, the Westin Riverfront Resort and Spa is an impressive spectacular hotel. Located in the town of Avon at Beaver Creek Mountain on a 19-acre site in the magnificent Vail Valley, you will have instant access to Beaver Creek Mountain and the Eagle River. If the winter activities do not entice you, feel free to simply stay at the resort to relax and enjoy the special amenities. The Anjali Spa alone is 23,000 square feet with a gym, yoga and pilates studio, a lap pool and 2 jacuzzis, 14 treatment rooms, 3 infinity style outdoor whirlpools, sauna/steam rooms, and of course, a salon with services including bridal make up and natural mineral makeup lessons.

Guest rooms are fully equipped and beautifully designed in neutral tones and in Rocky Mountain contemporary decor. Windows overlook either the scenic, majestic mountains or the charming storybook town. Rooms have individual climate control, a humidifier, two Heavenly robes, and an in-room safe and in the bathroom, a dual Heavenly shower head and White Tea Aloe bath products. Admirable and an especially appealing selling point is that the hotel is "green." There are recycling bins in all guest rooms, environmentally friendly paints and carpets, energy-saving appliances and energy-efficient lighting throughout the resort.

A standard room is 400 square feet and at the top of the scale, the three bedroom suite at 1,900 square feet, complete with fully equipped kitchen, dining room table which seats eight, washer and dryer, living room seating for 7 and a private deck that overlooks either the mountains or Eagle River. The lobby features a cozy wine bar where choices are purposely somewhat limited in order to offer you a quick relaxing drink as you lounge by the lobby fireplace. Getting to Beaver Creek by car from the Denver Airport will take you through a 130 mile drive through the Rockies. My children and I have a tradition of listening to American Indian spiritual CD's while traveling through these snowy valleys and experience the dramatic and glorious scenery. It is simply awesome. Frontier, United and US Air have convenient flights from St. Louis.

Another alternative is flying directly into Vail/Eagle County Airport which is just 25 miles west of Beaver Creek, then taking ground transportation to your lodging destination. No matter how you get there, you will not be disappointed when you experience this spectacular breathtaking inspiring vacation.

Ski Colorado

P

icture a charming ski village in a secluded canyon, riding the lift up the snow-covered mountain, surrounded in with the panoramic vista of the Colorado Rockies. The popular alternative is sitting on your living room couch, watching reruns of "Seinfeld" and wishing it was summer again. Don't do it! Get up and go and experience a memory you won't soon forget! Colorado beckons you to discover Denver and the affordable resorts that lie only a couple of hours away from the Mile High city! Remember, you don't have to ski to enjoy the ambiance and serenity of a mountain resort. For those of you snow bunnies who are new to visiting the area, I strongly suggest that you do your homework before you go. Planning your trip is great fun so enjoy looking at your options! Travel agencies can help answer questions and price packages from reputable vendors and what I love the best, give you hard copy descriptive brochures that help you visualize your trip. What fun to turn off the TV and sit on that living room couch pouring over the detailed beautifully designed brochures and planning your vacation together! Ask yourselves what activities you would like to do. Museums? Nightlife? Cross-country skiing? Art galleries? Hot chocolate and fireplaces? Spa? What is your budget? When would you like to travel? How long of a stay? The answers to these questions will help you make a decision as each resort has its own unique personality. What is your dream? Is an active ski area full of activity, boutiques, restaurants, art, theater, music and nightlight your choice or would you prefer a quiet, relaxing low-key, picture postcard setting? Colorado has them all.

The bulk of ski towns are directly west of Denver high in the Rockies. From St. Louis to Denver, in fact, to Vail, Beaver Creek and Glenwood Springs, you never have to turn off Highway 70 till you get to your destination! Frontier, Southwest, American and United all fly into Denver so flights are abundant and often. Certain resort areas such as Aspen have their own small airports plus there are shuttle services to the ski area and plenty of car rental companies. Hertz has ski racks and snow tires and Emergency Road Assistance. If you have never been to Denver, please know the city is certainly worth a couple of overnight stays. The new Denver Art Museum is incredible, three gigantic sports stadiums, the 16th Street Mall in the heart of the city and on the north end, is LoDo, a hip historic district with jazz, cafes, restaurants and sports bars. Not far away is the very popular Cherry Creek Shopping District, not to mention the great Denver Zoo, History Museum and some of the older house tours such as the Molly Brown House. Denver is at the base of the mountains with the Front Range cuddling Ft. Collins, Loveland, Boulder and Colorado Springs and about 2 hours away from the closer bigger resorts. When pricing and planning your mountain resort vacation packages. you will want to consider meal costs, lodging, convenience to the nearest town, what to pack, the best means of transportation, travel time and cost of your activities. If the family is going, are there plenty of opportunities for the children to enjoy? If you are a skier, check out the available ski runs vs your capabilities, such as beginners, intermediate and expert runs. Calculate the cost of lift tickets, equipment rentals, perhaps a ski school. Does your resort have special amenities? Ski in/ski out directly from the hotel? Are the

nearby restaurants according to your tastes? Are they attainable? Doing your homework ahead of time is not only fun but can save you needless heartache once you are at your destination and relax and enjoy. To help you with some of these preliminary issues, below are some of the approximate driving times to Colorado's hottest resort areas from Denver. Aspen: 4 hours (215 miles) (Aspen does have an airport) Beaver Creek: 2.5 to 3 hours (132 miles) Vail: 2.5 hours (125 miles) Copper Mountain, Keystone, Breckenridge: 2 hours (100 miles)

The Aspen/Snowmass area in the Elk mountain range has evolved from a small mining town to a world famous, celebrity attraction with any feature you could possibly desire. Four mountains, the Aspen Highlands, Buttermilk, Aspen Mountain and Snowmass combined total 5,303 acres and 336 trails and 46 lifts and you can ride them on only one lift ticket. The area includes Snowmass which has beginner slopes and features the Treehouse Kids Adventure Center which is a licensed day care and part of a $17 million project that opened the 2007-2008 season. Each room's design is tailored for a specific age group and a licensed registered nurse is on site. Children, depending on age, have access to hands on activities, puppet theater, and toys and planned events. Aspen has long been "The Place To Be Seen" and now offers theater, jazz, top restaurants, art galleries and is also a fashion center. In fact, the third annual Aspen Fashion Week (Mar. 13 - 17, 2011) will showcase and market winter resort, ski and technical outerwear. The 19th annual Aspen Academy Screenings,(Dec. 29, 2010 - Jan. 2, 2011) a slate of the year's hottest films attracts the top directors and stars. An event held (Jan. 13 - 16, 2011) is the 60th annual Wintersköl, Aspen's four day celebration of snow throughout Aspen and Snowmass ). The Winter X Games begin on the 27th of January and end the 30th, 2011.) For a fun virtual tour of Aspen, check out Aspen's wonderful web site www.aspenchamber.org.

Ever popular and beautiful Vail, Colorado will be the host the Alpine World Championships in 2015 and justly so. Vail’s 7 mile long mountain has 5,289 acres and has three distinct areas. There are seven bowls, the Front Side and Blue Sky Basin. Overall percentages of course usage are 18% beginner, 29% intermediate and 53% advanced or expert with a total of 31 lifts. A unique fun feature is Adventure Ridge which is an actual snow park the size of a football stadium and sits on top of the mountain. The gondola runs from breakfast till night when you can drink your hot chocolate and watch the sun set over the snowy beautiful bowls. Even in the most popular resort areas, you will be able to find condos, smaller inns and B and B's and the lodging that will fit your particular style and needs, whether Old West, Contemporary West or Victorian, Swiss or Nordic, Colorado resorts offer a gambit of choices.

You may want to try out the hut trip! This allows you and your friends or organization to snowshoe, ski and stay in a hut in the snow country. The buildings are not actually little huts but actual buildings, some log cabins, some little and some sleeping 20 people. Wood-burning stoves, firewood, matches, propane burners for cooking, mattresses and pillows, however, drinking water is the renter's responsibility. For info, visit www.huts.org. Keep in mind that Keystone, Breckenridge, Copper Mountain, Dillion and a host of others areas are options when choosing your Denver area vacation. The choices are many which is why if this is your first time planning a ski trip, that you should talk to experienced skiers or your local travel agent to help you with your most memorable, wonderful winter vacation!

Chesterfield and Town & Country ... Suburbs

T

he areas of Chesterfield and Town and Country conjure up many images in people's minds: beautiful homes; great shopping and dining; a thriving business community; and easy access to all the resources anyone could ever want raising a family. As little as 20 years ago, or less, you could still pass by silos and barns driving down highway 40 signifying the agrarian community that once was. Chesterfield and Town and Country through the Ages

Chesterfield, located just 25 miles west of downtown St. Louis, has grown and changed continually since it first became a named community way back in 1818. Colonel Justus Post is said to have come here in 1815 from Middlebury, Vermont with an IOU for $1,000 from the government for services rendered in the war of 1812 and an estate of $12,000, which he used to purchase land. Eventually he bought 21,204 acres which straddled Wild Horse Creek Road and ran between Baxter and Wilson Roads and became the original Chesterfield community. Through others' purchases, the area continued to expand. You can still see remnants of the community's early heritage in the Farmer's Bank Building (circa 1914), listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the nearby row of bungalows and the 1920s Slaughter House which is now home to the studio of nationally renowned artist Don Wiegand. Town and Country was also originally woodlands and farm lands. Located just 12 miles from downtown St. Louis, the area is dotted with white fences and grazing horses to this day. Known for its large lots - most are an acre - it is primarily residential but has been enhanced relatively recently with several upscale shopping centers which add to the

convenience and sophisticated nature of the area. The town incorporated in 1950 as a village with less than 1,000 residents and has grown to its current population of about 11,000. Though both towns have grown and evolved over the years, perhaps the most dramatic changes came to Chesterfield after the Big Flood. In St. Louis terms that would be the great flood of 1993. At the time, I was working in "The Valley" and I remember vividly the men folk going down to the Monarch levee each morning to check its saturation point. It was a point of pride for them, strapping on their masculinity, daring Mother Nature to threaten to destroy modern evolution. Eventually, Mother Nature won. The levee broke and engulfed the entire area including Highway 40 with enough water that these same men would take their John boats out on the highway and among the flooded buildings on rescue missions. Shortly after you could see signs in the valley reiterating the famous line from the movie Field of Dreams, "Build it and they will come." And come they did. The area, which some still refer to as "Gumbo Flats" (the name comes from the rich, silty soil which becomes clay like when it gets wet) has grown astronomically from three or four restaurants antediluvian, to include perhaps thirty restaurants now, hotels, the Kemp Auto Museum, and a Walmart which anchors the longest shopping center in the country.

A Great Place to Call Home

Most know both Chesterfield and Town and Country as towns with beautiful subdivisions with relatively new houses (between five and forty years old) that allow home-owners to spread out a bit. In fact, most of

the lots in Town and Country are a full acre in size. In Chesterfield, however, community planning provides for a balanced mix of single family homes, villa condominiums, apartments and retirement/assisted living communities. Single family homes range in price from $140,000 to more than $2.5 million. This blend is one of the many reasons over 46,000 people happily call Chesterfield home. Lisa Accurso, relocation specialist with the William French Real Estate Firm, says clients are especially attracted to the area because of "what they can get for the dollar." Specializing in the needs of out-of-towners moving to the area, Accurso finds clients are drawn to the newer, executive homes, the ample lot size, the convenience to shopping and highways, and the excellent schools. Those who really want the lot size are attracted to Town and Country, while those with children often are more geared to Chesterfield which she describes as "typical American suburban living". It's populated by "a lot of families with kids, where everything centers around the kids."

13951 Meursault Lane • Town & Country Mo 63017 Listed at Coldwell Banker Gundaker Town & Country

If you prefer to start from scratch and build your own home, Accurso describes Chesterfield as being nearly "built-out". However, Town and Country is seeing a recent resurgence in teardowns and rebuilding. The generous lot sizes accommodate most home builder's plans, and the neighborhoods' upscale reputations can fully support the enhanced property values. The region is served by two of the best public school districts in the St. Louis area, Parkway and Rockwood, and is complemented by private schools accommodating a variety of religious preferences. Priory, a premier Catholic boys school; Solomon Schechter, a private Jewish school; Principia, the Christian Scientist boarding school; and nationally renowned Churchill Center and School for kids with learning disabilities are all located in Chesterfield and Town and Country.

Chesterfield Family Aquatic Center

Endless Entertainment Whether you're a skater, a thespian, a special-needs baseball player or just a casual walker, both towns have multiple parks and green spaces which will entice you to try something you never thought you might. One of the most widely-known landmarks is the 8,000 square foot Sophia M. Sachs Butterfly House which puts you directly in touch with more than 1,000 butterflies delighting people of all ages. After you enjoy your butterfly kisses, relive your childhood with a ride on the beautifully restored 1920s carousel that will take you back and simultaneously give your child a thrill and a taste of history. Both of these are located in attractive Faust Park which hosts numerous family activities including Concerts in the Park in the summer, and various holiday events. Longview Farm Park which dates back to the 1820s is the remnant of a farm that once encompassed over 350 acres. The former residential home, converted from a log cabin built around 1870, sits amid the park's bucolic setting and is now available for private rental.

Hardee's Iceplex

San Marco Horse's: Chesterfield City Hall

Those who dream of being a pro athlete can train at Ozzie Smith's Sports Academy or the Hardee's Iceplex, host to national championships in speed skating and ice hockey and home to the St. Louis Bandits and AAA Blues hockey teams. For more casual athletes there are a variety of rec-centers: Jewish Community Center; YMCA; and The Club at Chesterfield. For outdoor recreation there are multiple parks like the CBC Cadet Park, which offers walking paths, athletic fields and multipurpose courts. In the summertime residents enjoy the Chesterfield Family Aquatic Center that boasts all the fun modern-age water features as well as a 25-yard competitive pool.

Local hero Albert Pujols partnered with the City of Chesterfield to construct Miracle Field, an athletic field created especially for children with special needs. The rubberized surface and oversized dugouts are designed to accommodate wheelchairs fulfilling the tenet that "every child deserves a chance to play baseball." Golf enthusiasts have a variety of both private and public courses within reach. Nearby private courses include Forest Hills, Meadowbrook, Four Seasons, and the Missouri Bluffs in St. Charles. Challenging, convenient public courses include the Landings at Spirit in Chesterfield, Crystal Springs Quarry in Maryland Heights and the Links at Dardenne in O'Fallon. Artistic souls can take classes from award-winning Stages Academy, the Community Music School of Webster University, Chesterfield Arts, or see a live performance at the YMCA's 370 seat theater. Concert goers enjoy free concerts by The Town & Country Symphony Orchestra, which performs in a variety of musical styles — classical, pops, Christmas pops, operettas, and oratorios. Art lovers will revel in the sculpture park, located in "Downtown Chesterfield" at Chesterfield Parkway West and I-64, home to "The Awakening" also known as "the giant". Five separate pieces burst from the ground creating a sculpture that weighs in at over 4,700 pounds, measures 70 feet long and more than 17 feet high enticing people of all ages to jump, climb, and play hide-and-seek in it.

The Awakening

Finally, if you or your child just need to work off some energy try Skyzone for endless trampoline exhaustion, the new Chesterfield Sports Fusion for laser tag or indoor mini golf, or Bounce-U with its variety of inflatable structures. All three entice birthday party planners from a 25 mile radius.

Shopping and Dining to Suit Every Taste Level Town and Country

Links at Dardenne

St. Louis County Fair & Air Show Balaban's Tapas and Wine Bar

Restaurants and shopping areas are booming in the area. Town and Country Crossing, located at the intersection of Woods Mill (Rt. 141) and Clayton Roads, is a recent addition. Anchored by a Target and Whole Foods it features stand alone buildings representative of the area's style and sophistication and has some of St. Louis' best stores. For great Italian dining - and St. Louis is known for it - try Napoli 2, sister to Café Napoli located in Clayton. When they decided to expand 2 years ago, this was the place, and the clientele they wanted to serve. For that cozy, intimate dinner, Bistro 1130 offers flavorful cuisine from the south of France accompanied by an expansive wine menu. Boutique shopping is at its finest with home-grown stores like Klutch, Laurie Solet, Susan Lynn's and Codi Jewelry. Each one offers on-trend apparel and jewelry that's sure to be a keeper for years to come. Yet every store has just a little different style, so of course it's necessary to visit each one to see which one (or maybe all of them) suits your fancy. Just a little further north on Clayton Road is Lamp and Lantern Village where you'll find a variety of restaurants and wonderful home décor galleries including F.O.B. St. Louis. Their certified designers will help create the room of your dreams all at an affordable price. A little further north still you'll encounter Town and Country Commons. Along with designer home decorator stores and restaurants you'll also find doctors' offices, a post-office and even your local IRS office.

Chesterfield Shopping

Heading further west on Highway 40, Chesterfield of course has the Chesterfield Mall replete with chain stores and restaurants, and a 14 screen AMC movie theatre but it too has its share of local restaurants and unique boutiques. Located a little further south from the mall on Clarkson Road in the Chesterfield Oaks Shopping Center you can find

Conway House, Faust Historic Village chain stores but also lovely surprises that offer something a little more special. Meka Boutique, opened just a few months ago, has become quite the talk of the town for its whimsical yet stylish apparel that appeals to women of all ages. Pulse Boutique is funky, fun and full of the latest styles seen on celebs and anyone just wanting to feel their best. But women don't live on shopping alone so stop in and soothe your soles and your soul at A True Spa. They have everything from seaweed wraps to complimentary 15 minute skin and/or make-up consultations. They even offer teen spas and special men's spa treatments.

Man Stores

Speaking of men, Chesterfield has the ultimate in the man's store - all while retaining a woman's sense of style. Amini's Home, Rugs and Game Store (located in the valley), with its unmistakable gold dome, has a huge selection of pool tables, video games, theater seating, bars and bar stools, rugs, and even lighting - everything you could possibly want to create the ultimate man cave all while maintaining your well thought out decor. But if your man's cave is more of the outside type, stop in at Golf-Tec for personal club fittings, swing evaluations, indoor practice bays and more. And if you or he is dreaming even bigger, be sure to visit The Kemp Auto Museum. Their collection of rare and vintage European automobiles is one of the finest in the country. Their antique MercedesBenz collection alone will have you swooning with fond memories of Cary Grant movies (Suspicion anyone?).

Chesterfield Restaurants

The Chesterfield restaurant scene offers everything from four convenient, locally owned Subway restaurants to the newly opened

Seasons American Cuisine which features seasonal, locally grown produce. Italian food lovers need look no further than Gianfabio's. Established in 1987, their open-flame oven splits the casual bar side, where you can watch the game, from the elegant dining side where you can enjoy their signature specialties and linen tablecloths. For a more relaxed atmosphere there are a number of sports bars including Lesters, known for their corn-beef sliders, and Kriegers for their really great burgers. Balaban's Tapas and Wine Bar has a long history in St. Louis. Formerly located in the Central West End, they closed that location and chose Chesterfield to re-open and share their oenophile and culinary magic. No listing of Chesterfield restaurants would be complete however without mentioning The Smokehouse Market and Annie Gunn's. Dating back to 1937, they are located in the Chesterfield Valley and are one of the few storefronts that survived the flood only to come back bigger and better. Their amazing smoked meats, sandwiches (try the turkey salad - to die for) and friendly atmosphere are legendary throughout St. Louis. Annie Gunn's, the restaurant side, is a lively place to meet and make friends, enjoy happy hour or one of the finest meals you'll ever experience. Spacious, affordable homes, first-rate schools, a plethora of entertainment options, and convenient shopping for the unique or the necessary - these are just some of the reasons why so many choose to call these communities home. Top that with easy access to highways and the busiest airport in the state, Spirit of St. Louis Airport, and it's easy to see why Chesterfield and Town and Country continue to be one of the most sought-after areas in the entire St. Louis region.

Restaurant Review

istro 1130 B

"There’s a small bistro, where love and joy will surely grow.."

by Sheila Frayne Rhoades

B

istro 1130 opened just last September, and has quickly become a destination restaurant in West County. If you’re not inclined to travel to France, why not take a shorter trip to this beautiful place. You’ll then experience all the ambience and flavors of an authentic French bistro.

The story of the “sexiest French restaurant in town” began and ends with romance. Once upon a time an American lady from Pittsburgh and a French chef from Marseilles fell in love. Eric Miranne and his wife Mikki Jones-Miranne are that FrancoAmerican couple. Married since July 2009, the Mirannes blended their families as well – adding Mikki’s thirteen year old daughter and Eric’s six year old son. From the very beginning, the Mirannes always had the same romantic vision – that of opening a small French restaurant in St. Louis. Their plans finally evolved when Mikki chose the perfect venue and Eric, the perfect menu. 44

Bistro 1130’s unique location is within a beautiful shopping center on a three-acre lake in Town & Country. “I was sold when I first saw the waterfront view and called Eric immediately. He agreed with my ideas and that’s how it started,” said Mikki.

Eric and Karim’s teamwork is seamless. Eric emphasized, “Karim and I come up with all the dishes ourselves. We understand each other very well. The best element is that we use the same cooking techniques; we always seem to be on the same page.”

Attention to detail abounds throughout Bistro 1130, especially in the kitchen. Every delectable dish is superbly presented by Chef Karim Bouzammour, a Moroccan native who was classically trained in French cooking. Karim had formerly spent his career working in Marseilles, as well as in the Provence region of southwest France.

To avoid any confusion, Bistro 1130’s traditional French menu has kindly been translated to English. Featuring a la carte French Mediterranean cuisine, it offers great choices. Eric listed just a few of their diners’ favorite delights in order - from appetizer to dessert:

T h e r e’s a l w a y s g o o d k i t c h e n chemistry when the owner and chef really know one another. They had previously worked together and obviously complement each other very well. “We prep together, and every dish is designed and prepared by us. Most importantly, we start from scratch. Ooh la la, we also have a lot a fun,” said Eric.

Les Hors D’oeuvres - Sautéed Sweetbreads in a Port Reduction over Mixed Greens, Sautéed Foie Gras with Roasted Peaches and Potato Galette Les Salades - Arugula Salad with Poached Pears, Stilton Cheese and Cranberry Vinaigrette Les Soupes - Lobster Bisque Les Poissons - Wild Stripe Sea Bass; Seared Monkfish Les Viandes - Lamb and veal chops.

Restaurant Review

Eric Miranne and Mikki Jones-Miranne Proprietors, Bistro 1130

The most popular desserts include the lemon custard tart, creme brule vanilla lavender, and chocolate mousse with Grand Marnier. Add to this, the dramatic flaming desserts prepared at table - Cherries Jubilee, Banana Foster, and Crepes Suzette.

exquisite interior. Patterned after intimate bistros, the upscale restaurant comfortably seats 48, but can also do a party of 65 with a different arrangement of the dining room. The bar area holds 15, and weather permitting, outside dining can accommodate another 16 to 20.

Because of so many requests from patrons, Bistro 1130 is now open for lunch. For musical entertainment, le jazz hot is normally provided on weekends from 7 to 11 p.m. It’s definitely a date night restaurant. For more menu information, check out their website: www.bistro1130.com.

Eric enjoys everything on the menu, especially the flavorful sweetbreads. Mikki favors the goat cheese salad, sautéed foie gras, the lamb trio, and of course all the specials her husband comes up with. Eric said, “We just added a new pasta dish - white fettuccini with langoustine creme sauce and fresh black truffles from perrigord.”

The bistro’s inspiration came from a romantic film. “Eric and I love the movie No Reservations, and adored that little restaurant setting.” Asked why Bistro 1130 is the sexiest French restaurant in St. Louis - Mikki explained, “In the evening when lights are low, it has this sexy feel. With its elegant, dark, classy and cozy layout - it simply sets the mood. I think the wall fireplace is just plain cool.” With its soft lighting, dramatic black and gold color scheme, white leather banquettes stretched along a mirrored wall – everything is so very French. “I selected most of the colors and patterns myself. Eric had a major part in the design of the wine rack and my good friend, Nettie White, created the faux painting. We share the same design tastes, so Nettie and I worked well together as we moved around the bistro. We just let our imaginations take off.”

Mikki summarized, “This lovely little French bistro is truly our dream come true. We are so happy with our friends, old and new, for sharing it with us. We thank them very much.” And so, they lived La Vie en Rose - happily ever after. C’est si bon!

The full bar offers a nice variety of some 80 French and American wines, along with a great selection of custom designed martinis.

Dinner: Tuesday to Saturday 5:45 p.m. to 10:30 p.m.

Eric and Karim traditionally offer wonderful weekend specials. “We take extra time to create great dishes for discerning people to experience. I’m already thinking about a new entrée for the winter season.” Added to this fine French cuisine is Bistro 1130’s impeccable service. The friendly staff flawlessly ministers to every whim all the while whisking away table crumbs and replacing fresh silverware and napkins as needed. As official hostess, Mikki said, “Although I try to be in the restaurant every night, I’m usually just there on weekends.” Besides taking care of her family, tireless Mikki is also owner of A True Spa in Chesterfield Valley. But she too has a restaurant background. “I worked at Sunset West as banquet and lunch manager, so I’m used to organizing large parties.” Mikki’s designing expertise is reflected in the restaurant’s

1130 Town & Country Crossing Dr. (at Clayton and Woodsmill Rd.) Town and Country, MO

Mikki explained, “We create our own and always come up with a few per the season like the holiday teeni,” All the liquor brands are top shelf from Absolut to Chopin, and for after dinner drinks, there are digestifs like cognac, calvados, and Armagnac. Uptown Magazine

what's new In the Lou?

The "MaryAnn" basics include moisture-wicking nightgowns from Bamboo Dreams and super soft casual wear from Nally and Millie. You can even bring in your favorite outfit and they will help you update it with "bling" and other key pieces Ginger would adore. Open Mon-Fri 10-6, Sat 10-5, or after hours by appointment.

by Wendy Schlesinger

It's a New Year, a new decade even (Can you believe it?) and time for those New Year's resolutions to kick in. But what fun are they without a few goal rewards waiting for you at the finish line? Perhaps you're lusting after something from Sheryl Crow's Bootheel line, or you need that Big Buddha bag you unfortunately didn't get for Christmas. Well you can find them both, along with D9 denim, Nick & Mo, and other great lines at remarkable discounts at Lillians of Kirkwood (205 N. Kirkwood Road, Kirkwood, 314-537-4590, lilliansshoppe. com/kirkwood). A fresh concept in shopping, this newly opened boutique is open only four days a month - the first Thursday through Sunday of the month. (Thurs-Sat 10-7 and Sun12-5) Reducing their overhead lowers your costs and creates a fabulously fun shopping experience that's one big party. They carry handbags, accessories, jewelry, and fashion clothing lines typically found in Nordstrom's but at reduced prices. And if your schedule won't fit into their shopping hours you can always create your own. Host a "Diva Nights" private shopping party which earns you free merchandise, or turn it into a fund raising event for charity. The owners are happy to accommodate you. If you're still in a dither over that age-old question "Are you a Ginger or a MaryAnn?" you can finally resolve it once and for all with a trip to the Ginger and Mary Ann Boutique, (151 W. Jefferson, K i r k w o o d , 314-821-4646, gingermaryannboutique.com). Even Mrs. Howell would love this store that carries both "the bling and the basics" and focuses on "age appropriate fashions with flair". If you're not sure who you are, or maybe you're a little of both, they will help you figure it out. As co-owner Pam Debrandt will tell you "We do relationship building here - we're very honest. I would rather have somebody walk out of here without any thing, than have them get something they don't love."

If you're more of a foodie than a fashionista, there are several new additions to the St. Louis restaurant landscape. Ginger Bistro, (6665 Delmar, University City, 314-222-2588, gingerintheloop.com) Asian fusion restaurant creates exotic signature cocktails like the "Flirtini" and the "Sparkling Uma" (sparkling saki and plum wine) to complement their house specialties which include Korean Bulgoki beef and Peppercorn Prawns. If you're not quite that daring, try their large selection of $4.95 lunch specials (served from 11:30-2:30 Mon - Sat) like the Philly Cheese Steak Rolls or opt from their extensive sushi menu. And if you're still really more of the "I'll just have a drink and watch my friends eat raw fish" kind of person, check out their Monday through Friday Happy Hour specials (3-6 and 10 pm-12 am). Seasons American Cuisine, (79 Forum Center at the corner of 141 and Olive, Chesterfield, 314-523-7374, seasonsamericancuisine. com) comes to us from a couple of home-grown St. Louis boys. They got their feet wet locally, trained at the CIA and Le Cordon Bleu, and returned home to bring us a tantalizing menu focused on the best locally sourced products available for each of the four seasons. Before the bread even comes out you'll be treated to a risotto teaser to entice you on to their entrees like: Blue Crab, Lobster and Mushroom Crepes; Chicken Modiga; and Baja Fish Tacos. Whether you're enjoying lunch or dinner, make sure to save room for the double chocolate crème brulée or the warm pear spice cake. Tues - Fri 11am-3pm; Fri and Sat 5-10; Sun 4-9.

For a quick bite try Manjelou's Pizzeria. (8135 Forsyth, Clayton, 314-863-5064, Fax:314-863-7062 manjelous.com) They use local, organic produce to top their specialty pizzas where you get to pick the cheese - classic mozzarella, or St. Louis preferred provel. Get it by the slice or the whole pie, or choose a sandwich or pasta instead. And while you're finishing off the kid's slice (they're huge - 1/6 of an 18" pie) they'll love decorating their own, private brownie - for free! Sun-Thurs 11-9, Fri-Sat 11-11. I've given you several choices to reward yourself with (and that’s only what I could fit in the column.) Now put down that doughnut, get out to the gym, and get crackin' on those resolutions so you can hurry up and treat yourself.
