Lisa McKinney, owner of Athena Boutiques in Frontenac is pictured on Uptown’s summer cover. The entrepreneur and businesswoman has brought high-end Greek fashion to St. Louis. Having travelled to Greece for the past several years, Lisa fell in love with the clothing designs worn by women throughout Athens. “I saw how women in Greece had a beautiful sense of fashion, they looked great and they seemed really comfortable, I call it ‘no stress dressing with style’ and I wanted to bring that concept to St. Louis,” Lisa said.

DESIGNING WOMAN: ARLENE LILIE of ARLENE LILIE INTERIOR DESIGN By Robyn Walker

area. My daughter, Sohaila Danesh, joined me over twenty years ago. We do both contemporary and what I would call “updated traditional” interiors. We also have access to a wide variety of special-order furniture, lighting, fabric and carpet lines, or we can design and fabricate completely customdesigned furniture to suit a client’s specific needs. We also have our own extensive fabric and wallpaper library, as well as great upholsterers and drapery workrooms. Q. What do you want people to know about your showroom and retail store? A. Arlene Lilie Interior Design combines the best of both worlds. In addition to our design business, someone looking to freshen or even completely update their space can come into our store and peruse our unique selection of modern furniture, exquisite antiques, fine art, crystal chandeliers, mirrors, contemporary and vintage lamps and unusual accessories. We even have a new line of children’s furniture inspired by classic mid-century designers like Charles Eames and Arne Jacobsen.

Interior designer Arlene Lilie creates chic and elegant interiors that are contemporary, yet classic. I had the opportunity to talk at length with Arlene Lilie about the evolution of her successful interior design business and retail store, and what gives her business its unique personality. Q. How long have you been in the Central West End? A. I bought this building with a business partner in 1992. We shared the space until she died two years ago. Since then, I’ve purchased her half of the building and have expanded my retail and showroom space to 8,000 square feet. Q. You seem to have quite an eclectic mix of antiques and contemporary furniture. A. Yes, McPherson is noted for its art galleries, contemporary furniture showrooms and antique galleries. Besides the furniture and accessories that are offered by Arlene Lilie Interior Design, we showcase the antiques of Louise Harre and custom iron furniture by Shannon O’Dougherty. I’ve also welcomed Elements of Design, a custom frame shop, into my building. Q. What about your interior design services? A. I’ve been an interior designer since the early 70’s when I started designing model homes for builders in the St. Louis 10

The store is arranged in room vignettes so customers can visualize how their interiors spaces can be transformed with our merchandise and our design expertise. Or, you may find that one special piece that brings a fresh perspective to your existing space. Q. How do you work with your clients in achieving beautiful interiors? A. My approach is to get to know the way my clients live, what they want to achieve in their space and how they want their space to best work for them in their daily lives. I incorporate their desires and needs with my own signature style to give them rooms that aren’t trendy, but rather timeless. Q. Are you influenced by interior design trends? A. I want to say, “Not that much,” but I must qualify that by saying that there is a constant evolution going on in all the arts that one falls into naturally. I get inspired when I travel and experience other cultures, and also by new products that are continuously coming on the market.

Must-Haves

ummer is approaching, so it’s time to choose a fresh, new fragrance for summer. To get you started on selecting an absolutely luscious scent, we’ve chosen six designer fragrances from Neiman Marcus that are fresh, aromatic and will lift your spirits all summer long .

Yves Saint Laurent creates legendary fragrances. Parisienne is a robust f ragrance blended with blackberry, damask rose and sandalwood, while the men’s La Nuit de L’Homme is a manly blend of cardamom, cedar and coumarone.

Badgley Mischka makes a memorable scent called Couture. Couture is an exotic blend of rich fruits, florals and sensuous musk. Wear this spirited fragrance all summer long and expect compliments. Acqua Di Parma creates a magnificent magnolia fragrance with warm accents of magnolia, woods, vanilla and musk. This is a rich, sensual floral blend that you will adore.

Tom Ford has a new fragrance collection that’s sensuous, soft and seductive. With their intoxicating ingredients, these unisex scents will make you feel alluring and alive.

OUR FAVORITE LUXURY CAR BRANDS by Robyn Walker

2011 Land Rover Supercharged

L

uxury car brands such as Mercedes, Porsche, BMW, Lexus, Infiniti, Range Rover, Cadillac and Jaguar come with all of the bells and whistles such as multi-contour seats, sun roofs, retractable tops, alloy wheels, and navigation systems and they offer not only instant status appeal, but unsurpassed driving performance. If price is a factor in your decision to buy or lease a luxury car, you can always opt for a lower-end make and model that comes without as many of the frills and extras. BMW, the immensely popular European automaker, manufactures the ultimate driving machine. BMW’s are available in a broad range of various makes and models that appeal to most car buyers, whatever their lifestyle, taste and budget happens to be. To learn more about the prestigious BMW brand, visit Autohaus, which is the largest BMW dealership in the St. Louis area, or Plaza Motors.

2011 Cadillac Cts Coupe

Porsche, the premier luxury sports car, is world famous for its superb engineering. This racing-style German sports car is amazing to see and thrilling to drive. The power-charged Porsche Boxster is my favorite and has a sleek, pared down silhouette. Test drive a Porsche at Parktown Porsche-Audi or Plaza Motors. 2011 Jaguar xk

If the Jaguar brand is what you’re looking for in a luxury car, visit Plaza Motors and test drive of one of these remarkable cars. Jaguar, which is synonymous with luxury, style, class, is known for its refined elegance.

One of the leading luxury car brands is Mercedes-Benz. An example of Mercedes Benz automotive excellence is the collection of Mercedes-Benz SL-Class cars. The luxurious Mercedes-Benz roadsters have sculpted exteriors and new 18-inch alloy wheels. Classic side gills evoke the SL’s Gull wing heritage. The engines perform with awesome power and the retractable hardtop roof is legendary. You can test drive a Mercedes-Benz at Tri-Star, Progress Point or Plaza Motors.

May - June 2011

For those of you who haven’t yet experienced the thrill of driving a luxury car, it’s definitely worth your time to visit the luxury car dealerships in the greater St. Louis area to learn the benefits of driving a luxury car and to take a test drive.

2011 Porche 911

If you’re uninspired with mass-produced, middle-of-the-road cars and you’re in the market for a superbly-built luxury car, my advice is to visit one of St. Louis’ leading luxury car dealers such as Tri-Star, Plaza Motor Company, Parktown Porsche-Audi, Progress Point, Bentley, and Autohaus.

2011 BMW 740i

Most luxury car dealers also have pre-owned makes and models which can save you a substantial amount of money. Leasing is another option and there are many special leasing packages. A fast and easy way to know what’s on the luxury car market is to look at the luxury car inventories that are posted on most luxury car dealers’ websites. Whether you buy a luxury car or lease one, there are many choices available so you’re destined to find a luxury car that will inspire you , enhance your lifestyle and provide you with an extraordinary driving experience.

Schnarr’s Hardware, at 9800 Clayton Rd., was founded as Schnarr’s Wagon Repair Shop in the late 1800’s, when Ladue was a village in a rural countryside, Clayton Road was little more than a trail, and cars were Model T’s. Today, customers can have anything from screens to lamps repaired, or have keys made, glass cut, and paint

colors matched by computer. Hand tools, power tools and lawn equipment are available for sale or rental, and Schnarr’s carries custom mailboxes, posts and signs. There are also over 300 decorative door hardware designs and 2,500 cabinet hardware choices on display. Ladue Pharmacy, an old-fashioned corner drugstore reminiscent of an earlier era at 9832 Clayton Rd., delivered medicine by bicycle in the 1950’s, and still offers delivery to regular customers, who know the store is large enough to meet their needs, yet small enough to know their name. It’s also the local U.S. Post Office. Ladue Florist carries a large selection of candles, gifts, silks and collectibles, candy and cards, as well as exquisitely beautiful floral arrangements for any beloved occasion. Celebrate special days with roses that almost glow, lovely, candy-pink lilies, festive tulips and elegant, always-appropriate orchids in fragrant bouquets artfully designed by creative, talented, award-winning professionals. As any staffmember will tell you, “To us, every wedding is unique, every bride is unique, every special occasion is unique. So are the flowers than express an individual’s personal style.” St. Louis’ largest selection of engagement rings and diamond jewelry, designed for their stones in platinum or eighteen carat gold, are around the corner at Curt Parker Jewelers, where internationally acclaimed jewelry designers work with many of the finest jewelry companies in the world, to create pieces as dazzling as the women who wear them.

At Albarre Jewelers, choose from designer collections, or classic pieces like three-stone diamond rings and solitaires, or one-of-akind items like the elephant head ring with a trunk that moves. Traditional gemstones, like rubies, sapphires and emeralds, come from all over the world, and are the perfect choice for a custom piece. Each stone is natural; nothing lab-created. Mandel’s Diamonds and Fine Jewelry, family owned and operated since 1932, combines platinum and precious gold with exquisite gems, in a complete and tasteful line of wedding jewelry and fine accessories, of deep symbolic significance, and meant to endure for a lifetime. One look at Ladue and Frontenac’s tree-lined streets, rolling hills, gorgeous, old neighborhoods and sprawling estates, and you’ll see why these communities take pride in their unique character and quality of life. If you’re shopping for a home in these highly desirable places to live, just ask any of the professionals at Coldwell Banker Gundaker of Ladue, Laura McCarthy Real Estate, or Janet McAfee Real Estate.

Ladue, named after nineteenth century lawyer and banker Peter Albert LaDue, was established in 1936. According to statistics, Ladue has the highest median income of any city in the state of Missouri with a population over 1,000, is the best educated city in the state, and also has one of the highest median household incomes in the country. In The City of Frontenac takes its name from French courtier Louis de Buade, the Count of Frontenac, and was incorporated in 1947. French architectural style predominates, even in new construction, among the roughly 1,300 homes, usually situated on one-acre lots, which have steeply pitched roofs, deep windows and doors with multiple panes and dark wood, and huge kitchens.

TOP DOGS By Robyn Walker

True happiness and joy for millions of Americans is owning a pedigreed pooch or a loveable mixed breed dog! Your dogs whether they’re a pair of cuddly poodles a gorgeous golden retriever or a cute terrier are always important members of your family. Most often, a pet dog is the undisputed master of the house and is always very loyal to the entire family. For those of you who adore dogs and have unwavering affection for your precious pets, there’s nothing better than proudly displaying a sentimental photograph of you and your favorite four-legged friends in your living room or den. Uptown talked with St. Louis business owners about their delightful dogs and the unique qualities that make them so special. We also took candid photographs of these adorable canine companions with their proud owners and we‘d like to share these priceless photographs with you. Carla Felumb, who owns Mister Guy Ladies’ Store in Ladue, is always in style, and so is the store’s pet Pug dog, Lucy. Carla refers to loveable Lucy as “our store dog”. Lucy is four years old and she absolutely loves being in the store and seeing the customers and staff. Carla says,“Lucy doesn’t have a mean bone in her body. She’s nice to everyone who comes in to the store.”Lucy belongs to Mister Guy sales associate, Shannon Langenstein. When Shannon lost her pet Pug, she bought Lucy when Lucy was a puppy. “Lucy has been coming to the store every day since she was a puppy,” says Carla.

Laura Bryan, owner of Wish Shoes, the chic shoe boutique in Ladue, is the proud owner of a Havanese dog named Norbert. “Norbert is five years old and he was born in Germany. He is a very loyal dog,” says Laura. Laura’s mother, Felicity Pollnow, is also a dog lover and her pet dog is a Toy Munchkin, which is a very rare breed. This cuddly little canine weighs only six pounds and is named Gizmo. There’s an elegant new store in Ladue called Savvy Surroundings, which is owned by Diane Fogarty and Pamela Calvert. Pamela owns two cuddly Teacup Poodles who come in to the store every day. The playful poodles, Savvy and Lucy, have their beds and food in the store. The two perky pet poodles get along very well with each other and love their home away from home, Savvy Surroundings. One of the precious poodles, which is black, is named Savvy, who is nine months old. The other Teacup poodle, which is red, is named Lucy, and she is nine months old. Visiting this chic home furnishings, accessories and interior design store is a must-see. When you’re exploring Savvy Surroundings, you’ll see these cute little poodles playfully roaming around in the store. Margaret Cribbins Spooner, the owner of MAC’s Designs, owns Macsi, a well-behaved dog that is a combination of Shih Tzu and Bijan. Tom Bourgeois, Senior, who is the owner of Glen Alspaugh Kitchens & Baths, is very fond of his four-year-old West Highland Terrier named Wes, who always comes to the office to be with Tom. They knew that I would take good care of Wes because I am very fond of him.” Tom thinks that Wes looks exactly like the Westie who is in the Little Caesars television commercial. “Wes is a very good natured dog,” says Tom.

Must-Have Necklaces By Robyn Walker

One of life’s little luxuries is to own an elegant designer necklace. Unlike mass-produced jewelry, designer necklaces are original, unique and one-of-akind. A stunning designer necklace can also add glamour to your summer fashion wardrobe and set you apart from the crowd. Jewelry designer Curt Parker, owner of Curt Parker Jewelers, located in Ladue, has an awe-inspiring array of incredible, one-of-a-kind designer necklaces that range from a classic gold necklace to a dazzling diamond necklace. Another gifted jewelry designer is Martin Hassing, owner of Summit Jewelers, located in Webster Groves. Martin’s innovative jewelry designs have earned him a fine reputation as a remarkably talented jewelry designer. Martin’s necklace designs showcase the exquisite gemstones he buys from throughout the world. My favorite necklace is Martin’s dramatic green tourmaline, diamond and gold necklace, which would look gorgeous with any special occasion dress. Timekeepers, located in Clayton, has fine estate jewelry for a discriminating clientele including one-of-a-kind estate necklaces such as this lovely Victorian necklace with peridot gemstones and pearls.

These are just a few of the extraordinary necklaces that you’ll find at St. Louis’s leading jewelers. Enjoy!

RELAX, REVITALIZE, S ummer is the season for relaxing, revitalizing and rejuvenating your appearance. You’ll be spending more time outdoors and you’ll be wearing swimsuits that reveal your body so now is the time to shape up from head to toe. If you’re looking for a fabulous spa where you can indulge your passion for being pampered and beautified, my advice is to make an appointment at A True Spa. A True Spa is world-class and is among the premier day spas in St. Louis.

Mikki Jones , the creator of this elegant luxury day spa, was inspired to open her own luxury spa after traveling to many places and experiencing the tranquility of many beautiful spas. She says, “I was inspired by enjoying so many beautiful spas around the world. I wanted to bring a taste of this to St. Louis. It’s just a little part, but a very relaxing spa. Come in and zen.” Mikki adds, “True Spa is a beautiful, peaceful, tranquil place to relax and rejuvenate.” What makes A True Spa so exceptional? A True Spa consistently researches new products and procedures to bring you the best because that’s what you deserve. The luxury spa takes pride knowing that its Estheticians and Massage Therapists have the best training and knowledge of the products and procedures that they use. This unique luxury spa offers facials, make up, massages, body treatments and wraps, lash extensions, nails and many specialty services such as semi-permanent make up and air brush tanning. What makes A True Spa different from other luxury spas? Mikki explains, “A True Spa is different by design and our unique services we offer. I chose to create A True Spa in a way to be serene, quiet and relaxing for you so we don’t do hair as this is noisy. I also don’t do acrylic nails because of the noise and smell. I really wanted to create zen as best I could.” I asked Mikki what her beauty regimen is and she replied, “My own beauty regimen is to eat well, exercise well, keep positive in mind and

AND REJUVENATE at body and always take time for myself. I enjoy detox wraps, facials and pedicures monthly. And of course, a relaxing massage.” What is Mikki’s business philosophy? “My business philosophy is to keep an open mind to change and improvement to give our clients the best we can offer. I never stay in the same mode. Change is good for you”. When you schedule an appointment at A True Spa, you will have a one-on -one consultation with your Esthetician regarding facial needs and she will then design a skincare regimen customized just for you. Facials include brow touch up, extractions and oxy mist. My favorite is A True Signature Facial . This treatment combines the benefits of microdermabrasion with a chemical peel for your specific skin needs. The Anti-Aging Peptide-Collagen Facial is also very effective. This facial targets fine lines, while iot tightens and firms the face with collagen and peptides. The facial begins with microdermabrasion to exfoliate and prepare the skin. The skin is infused with a 100% collagen-peptide complex that will leave your skin firm and rejuvenated. A marvelous body treatment offered at A True Spa is the True Signature Seaweed Wrap. This treatment starts with a full body exfoliation followed by an application of detoxifying seaweed, and ends with a soothing massage using essential oils. Another must-have is a facial such as the soothing massage which is designed to relax and unwind the body and mind. Your massage therapist will customize your facial to relieve stress and tension.

A True Spa is located at 116 Chesterfield Commons in Clocktown Plaza in Chesterfield. To make an appointment, please call 636-537-3227.

Have you ever envied the nails of stars such as Beyonce, Katy Perry or Lady Gaga, as you flip through fashion magazines and wondered, "What is that on their nails?" Well, no more! Thanks to manicurists Angela Taylor and Salina O'Brien-Erby of Natural Beauty of Ladue, bringing a little bit of Hollywood to St.Louis. With over 15 years of experience each, Angela and Salina bring all of the latest in nail trends, such as Minx, shatter manicures and Shellac (the new 14 day manicure). Minx is the hottest new nail trend in Hollywood right now. It is a technique where adhesive sheets are activated by a heat lamp. The heat gives the Minx the flexibility to be stretched to fit over the curves of the nail and forms a seal to the nail bed which ensures longevity of wear. It can be applied over natural or artificial nails and comes in over 200 colors and patterns. It is not damaging to the nail and best of all, there's no drying time. What makes Minx stand out, are the unique patterns and the glossy metallic finishes that you could never achieve with polish alone. You can choose from prints as wild as the popular metallic cheetah, flowers and polka dots, to solid gold, silver and colored metallics, that you can literally see your reflection in. Minx are not for the timid, but for the stylish, modern woman of all ages, that wants her fingers and toes to be noticed. "Fashion is not just about the clothes we wear. Nails have become an important part of the fashion industry. Another way to express yourself. For example, Minx is about to launch a new line in conjunction with different design houses, such as Alexander

McQueen. They have been featured on Fashion Week runways," states Angela, "We want to keep our clients with it!" Salina and Angela have "minxed" many client's fingers and toes in the St.Louis area and before they leave the salon, clients are already thinking about what pattern they will do next. A Minx manicure will cost $50 and last 2-3 weeks, a Minx pedicure is $65 and will last 4-6 weeks. Salina stresses, "In this time of quick shops, we believe in being meticulous, not hurried. We are passionate about what we do and consider it an art. We have a relaxed, fun environment and enjoy the conversations as much as the manicures!" Rest assured, when you leave these ladies, you will be as fashion forward on your nails as you'll allow. It is a wonderful way to treat yourself and gift certificates for Minx or Shellac make a perfect gift for the fashionista in your life. Don't miss out, call for your appointment today!

Al Fresco Dining at its Best! By Wendy Schlesinger

With that crazy St. Louis weather behind us - snow one Sunday, 90 degrees the next! - we can now revel in a comparatively long season to enjoy some delicious outdoor patios. Casual or elegant, with everything from boats to fountains to f ire pits, there's a perfect patio for everyone!

CAFÉ NAPOLI

L

ocated in the heart of downtown Clayton, Café Napoli already holds a reputation for outstanding food service and hospitality. It’s rated as one of the best Italian restaurants in the St. Louis area, serving a variety of fresh pasta, beef, seafood and veal dishes.

But there are two sides to this culinary story. For adjoining Café Napoli, sits its more casual sister: Bar Napoli, a trendy cocktail lounge. The Bar’s large outdoor patio (seating 50) provides an added dining area, available from April to October. It’s a convenient spot to relax after work, and enjoy a favorite cocktail with friends. Owner Tony Pietoso described it, “Both Bar Napoli and Café Napoli are on the corner of a piazza, as we say in the old country. In Italy it means square or plaza.” And like its Italian counterpart, Pietoso’s piazza is also a place for people watching. It’s perfect for informal gatherings in the warmer months. Fine dining on the patio is available from Café Napoli’s restaurant menu, 5:30 p.m. – 10 p.m. In after hours, the lively patio takes on a party-like atmosphere up until 1 a.m.. On

the occasional weekend, entertainment may be added in the form of a DJ or live music. Drink and appetizer specials are offered Mondays through Thursdays 4 p.m.-7 p.m. “We’ll have new drink menus out for the summer months, as well as the regular bar list,” said Pietoso. Bar Napoli is already known for its huge selection of martinis, and features a large selection of international wines. An upscale cosmopolitan atmosphere, together with great contemporary dining Italian Style in an outdoor setting, combine to make Café Napoli and Bar Napoli a great spot for happy hour cocktails, dinner or a night cap. It’s definitely a must-go destination where friends and people meet for good times.

Season's American Cuisine Dining at Season's outdoor patio makes you feel as if you've been whisked off to a vacation paradise. Nestled among colorful petunias, impatiens and potted palms, diners will revel in a menu that changes to reflect the best ingredients seasonally available hence the name. Upon closer inspection, you'll realize the patio doubles as chef Kevin Smith's home-grown herb garden. Smith uses the fresh basil, chives and rosemary, among others, to masterfully enhance the spring menu now in full force. It features a variety of fresh fish, always wild caught, Florida stone crab claws, and homemade quiche. Or try one of these tempters: Chicken and cilantro pesto potstickers, or beef shortrib ravioli with white truffle parsnip puree and crispy fried parsnips. One of Smith's passions is chowders, so even though the blustery days of winter are behind us, prepare to be delighted with an unexpected chilled soup. As fancy as all that may sound, restassured this a comfortable place to be both in ambiance and cuisine. Weekends regularly offer comfort food of roast prime rib of beef on Saturdays and southern fried chicken on Sundays. Seasons American Cuisine has taken West County by storm with rave revues, personal service and special extras like an oft chef-served amouse bouche. Enjoy lunch on our beautiful outdoor patio and Happy Hour specials including discounted cocktails and events like 10 for 10 Tuesdays where patrons earn a $10 Seasons gift certificate for

correctly answering 10 trivia questions. The party keeps rolling with live music on both Friday and Saturday nights making this neighborhood restaurant worthy of the trip - regardless of where you live.

Maya Café

Feeling the need for an island getaway but can't quite “get away”. With the Best Margaritas in town, award winning food to match, and an outdoor setting that features a fishing trawler, Maya Café is the answer. Their unique outdoor oasis seats you dockside or on an old fishing trawler brought down from Traverse City, Michigan helping you forget you're in St. Louis. The comfortable setting often includes live music playing off the stern and a new dockside bar is on the way. Vibrant lights and flowers add to the ambiance rivaled only by the festive colors of the house-made salsa, hand -mixed guacamole and fresh-squeezed margaritas.

substantial fare like the Aji de Camarones feature shrimp covered in a spicy ancho, habanero and citrus cream sauce served over saffron rice and garnished with hard-boiled egg, kalamata olives and slivered almond. The food is fresh, the atmosphere lively (with bands playing indoors or outside every Friday and Saturday) and the margaritas will have you coming back again and again and again.

Serving award-winning dishes that hail from Peru, Costa Rica, and Argentina to name just a few, won’t fool you into thinking this is a typical Mexican restaurant. The Calamari is lightly floured and flash fried. The Cuban inspired empanadas are stuffed with plantains, chorizo, Chihuahua cheese, red pepper and green onion and served atop black bean soup. More

Scottish Arms

Outside, the private, enclosed patio entices guests with flowering gardens and a relaxed atmosphere. The clay chimineas allow the party to carry on into the wee hours by keeping you toasty on those not quite warm enough evenings. Or, keep warm instead by indulging in a shot of whisky from the largest selection in St. Louis.

Tucked away in the Central West End, just west of St. Louis University, the Scottish Arms will give you an authentic taste of Europe without having to cross the pond. Inside, the pub has a distinctive European flavor decorated with family crests, kilts and fixtures that feel as if they've come directly from a Scottish castle. The warm wooden booths call out to cram in just one more person to finish off that pitcher. The surroundings are comfortable but the linen tablecloths give it a touch of old world class.

Over 20 imported ales, porters and lagers from around the globe are served by the pint, 1/2 pint and pitchers. The authentic Scottish and seasonal European menu offers many pub classics like house made Haggis, Lamb Burgers with fennel jam and Fish n' Chips prepared with haddock traditional to the North East of Scotland. The seasonal menu is light with numerous salads, tuna tartar and lovely local cheeses and charcuterie on the Farmhouse Platter. Sunday Brunch should not be missed with seasonal light offerings and Fresh Squeezed Mimosas for $7.99 and Endless Mimosas for $14.99. The Arms is hopping all your round, no wonder you feel like you're in Scotland.

Bistro 1130 Alive, exciting, and casually elegant - I could be describing Bistro 1130 or Owner, Mikki Jones, but in fact I'm describing both. Mikki has taken her enthusiasm for the flavors and smells, and of course the fun, of cooking, and created the perfect summer dining spot with a French flair. "It's so much fun to express yourself in the kitchen" Mikki says and lucky us, we get to be the beneficiaries of her passion. Think Brie with apples or occasional specialities like classic French foie-gras or even sweetbreads. She works with her kitchen staff to create amazing delights that are always changing. Even if you've visited before, be prepared to be taken on a new journey this summer. It's lively, comfortable and always a pleasant surprise. The outdoor patio is fun and friendly, for both you and your pooch, and the perfect spot to sit back and enjoy a great bottle of wine with some live music. (Check the website for performance schedule.) Seated amid fragrant hyacinths, pussy willows and boxwoods with a view of the two-story fountain just a coin's toss away, you'll feel transported. It could be your favorite European café, or a spot on the California coast but wherever you feel you've gone to in your mind, the joy is that the new friends you've just met live right around the corner. Bistro 1130 is that perfect mix of comfort for the soul and sophistication for the palate. Always lively, always fun and just a touch unexpected, Bistro 1130 will have you buzzing with excitement. 46

Brio Tuscan Grille

Brio's, located at the corner of Clayton and Lindbergh roads, reflects the elegance Plaza Frontenac is known for and the outdoor dining area amply meets that challenge. Sophisticated yet comfortable, the patio spills out directly from the bar creating a vibrant hot spot for men and women of all ages. Cushy couches surround warming fire pits at night, while umbrellas provide soothing shade over your dining table. Or if you prefer a more distant stance, bar height two-tops offer an expansive view of the crowd. The crowd is energetic and friendly and you're bound to run into someone you know - this is St. Louis after all. Happy Hour specials include $5 martini Wednesdays and their "Tuscan Taster bar menu" for only $2.95 but don't let that stop you from enjoying the full Italian menu.

They specialize in pasta, of course, and balance that with grilled entrees like Bistecca alla Fiorentino and Shrimp and Orzo. Even the children's menu expands beyond mac and cheese and pizza to include grilled salmon or pork chops. Weekend brunch borders on hedonism, lasting until three in the afternoon, with choices like White Chocolate Raspberry French Toast or Crab and Shrimp Crepes. Pair that with a Bloody Mary or a Mimosa and call it a day. There's a reason Brio's is always packed. Good food, an always lively crowd, and comfortable yet classy surroundings provide the perfect backdrop for any occasion.

CHIC AND STYLISH WAYS Summertime is the perfect opportunity for chic and stylish outdoor entertaining. Uptown gives you clever and creative ideas for making the most of outdoor entertaining. THE GOURMET PICNIC Create a sumptuous gourmet picnic on your porch or in your back yard. You’ll need a picnic table and chairs which you can set with casual flatware and china. Load up the picnic table with glorious gourmet foods from Gourmet To Go, which has locations in Ladue and Clayton. We recommend the chicken salad, the fruit salad, the pasta salad, the potato salad and brownies. French croissants are perfect for the chicken salad sandwiches and can be purchased at Straub’s or Companion Baking. Don’t forget to serve lemonade in tall glasses with lots of crushed ice and lemon wedges. You can add club soda to the lemonade to add a little effervescence. THE AL FRESCO DINNER Our suggestion is to create an al fresco dinner on your patio. Just cover a table with a pretty tablecloth and napkins such as the French linens from Provence Boutique. Keep the lunch or 48

dinner menu simple. We suggest a wedge of brie cheese with crackers and freshly-baked French bread with butter or cream cheese, a loaf of pate, a fresh garden salad and a bowl of fresh fruit. A bottle of white wine is a good accompaniment for this simple menu. Grace your table with an arrangement of fresh garden flowers. If you don’t have a garden, Ladue Florist can create a charming bouquet of garden flowers for you. Candlelight works magic for outdoor dining so place lots of candles in hurricane vases on the table. THE OUTDOOR COCKTAIL PARTY An outdoor cocktail party on your terrace or poolside is always the perfect way to entertain your friends. An easy to plan cocktail party that will earn you compliments is to gather ten to twenty of your friends. Send them an invitation from The Service Bureau. There are all sorts of clever invitations there. A twohour cocktail party from five to seven always works well. Set up an elegant bar outside on your terrace. We suggest a simple bar menu of white wine, beer, and a fun-to-serve drink such as pina coladas. You can mix up a batch ahead of time. Serve the drinks in your best glassware

TO ENTERTAIN OUTDOORS and add a wedge of fresh orange with a maraschino cherry to make the drinks fun and festive. The cocktail food can be prepared ahead of time and placed on a table on your terrace. Buy some pretty floral or brightly cocktail paper cocktail napkins and matching plates. Finger food is the easiest such as miniature pizzas, cheese-wrapped olives, mini hamburgers with blue cheese on buns, cocktail tomatoes stuffed with cream cheese and olives, fresh strawberry and pineapple kabobs and cream puffs. Use votive lights with white candles set throughout your outdoor living spaces. The golden glow of the candles with lend an aura of elegance to the party. THE GARDEN PARTY If you have a garden, use its beauty and serenity as a place to have a casual party in the afternoon. Set up a table in the garden with wine and cheese, watercress and cheese sandwiches and fresh fruit. Give your guests a personal garden tour and let them cut a few of their favorite flowers fresh from the garden. Give your guests a small glass vase tied with a pretty pastel ribbon so that they can take their bouquet of flowers home.

THE OUTDOOR BARBECUE Gather your friends and family together for an outdoor barbecue. We suggest barbecued breast of chicken and beef tenderloin. Baste the chicken and beef with a marinade before you’re ready to grill. The marinade will make the meat extra tender. Make your own gourmet barbecue sauce by combining ketchup with vinegar, steak sauce and brown sugar. Also grill sliced potatoes with fresh onions, tomatoes, sweet red peppers, salt and pepper and butter. Just slice the potatoes, peppers, tomatoes and onion, wrap them in foil and baste them with melted butter. You can set the vegetables on the grill to cook slowly while you grill the meat. You can serve wine and margaritas with this delicious barbecue. Enjoy the outdoor magic of summer days and nights when the weather is warm and inviting. With these creative and entertaining ideas, you should have the best summer ever. Enjoy the season!

Restaurant Review

Via Vino Enoteca by Sheila Frayne Rhoades

V

ia Vino Enoteca is the newest addition to the Michael Del Pietro Restaurant Group, which includes Sugo’s Spaghetteria, Babbo’s Spaghetteria, and surprise!..... Kilkenny’s Irish Pub. Via Vino is also part of a long-standing line of famed St. Louis restaurants. Owner Michael Del Pietro, Jr. literally grew up in his family’s business. His parents opened the original Del Pietro’s near The Hill in 1976, when Michael was only 9 years old. The dynastic name of Del Pietro has since become synonymous with great Italian dining, and Michael Del Pietro, Jr. works hard to ensure his parents’ traditions live on. Del Pietro opened Via Vino last November near Plaza Frontenac. It’s a very trendy wine bar conveniently located next door to another of his newer restaurants - Sugo’s Spaghetteria. Via Vino offers a bistro-like menu consisting of small hot and cold plates, salads and a few large entrées to make it all the more interesting. Michael and his wife Melissa own and operate both of these Frontenac restaurants. They decided that their new eatery would be a little more unique and special than their other restaurants. Melissa said, “We really wanted something very different from the more rustic Sugo's, and loved the idea of having the two places being adjacent. Michael and I have always enjoyed casual nights out with friends, sharing small plated dishes and wines. That was our inspiration. We wanted to share that same experience with our customers.” The Del Pietros are definitely hands-on owners. Melissa typically 50

works the weekends as restaurant manager. “But Michael's much better than I am and I always listen to him. He's getting pretty good at this!” she said laughingly. “When Michael’s on duty at his restaurant, he enjoys working in the kitchen. He especially loves making the pasta. Michael remains on the job until he feels comfortable with someone else taking over. He’ll also help by running behind the line if things get too crazy.” Via Vino’s decor is very chic a la Roma with its dominant colors being high glossed blacks, whites and silvers. Its sophisticated ambience is reminiscent of the film classic La Dolce Vita. The restaurant’s ongoing vibe is lively, fun and exciting. The upscale clientele seem to enjoy the restaurant’s warm conviviality - chatting, eating, and imbibing against a background of upbeat music. In finer weather, the crowd simply spills outside for even more seating. Reservations are definitely recommended! Via Vino is billed as an enoteca, that’s Italian for wine bar. Its best description is “a contemporary wine bar with global cuisine.” International flavors abound in both cuisine and vintages. The menu changes as often as the seasons, offering fresh new items and daily specials. Dishes range from contemporary American, Italian, French, to sometimes Asian influenced dishes. Offerings on the a la carte list are mainly small hot and cold plates

Restaurant Review

that range in price from $4 - $12. Cold plate choices include poached shrimp, oysters on the half shell, marinated olives, salami and cheeses, a trio of cannelloni puree-olive tapenade-feta cheese, roasted peppers with soft herbed ricotta cheese and balsamic vinegar, plus assorted bruschette. Hot plated items include the very popular and substantial grilled tenderloin with Roquefort cheese and a red wine demi glaze. More international flavors are showcased with grilled shrimp and lemon beurre blanc (a customer favorite), homemade gnocchi in gorgonzola cream (Melissa’s favorite), and steamed Prince Edward Island mussels in a white burgundy sauce. Fried artichokes with lemon aioli, grilled scallop atop of pureed potatoes, and house made chips with gorgonzola dip and truffle oil round out this tempting list. Assortments of any of these small plated items, perhaps served with bruschette and salad, can make for delightfully light meals. Flavorful salads include roasted beets and goat cheese with champagne vinaigrette, grilled asparagus and warm mushrooms, and of course, there’s always the Caesar Salad. For those with heartier appetites, there’s a choice of welcoming comfort food entrees, ranging from $18 – 26. These include a half roasted chicken, steak au poivre, and usually a fish dish, like Chilean Sea Bass. Another very popular entrée is the tender and juicy double cut pork chop with garlic mashed potatoes and roasted apples. Via Vino’s wine list offers a great range of French, American and Italian selections for all tastes and price ranges. There are plenty of choices - sparkling, reds and whites by the glass, as well as full, half and splits. Melissa explained, “We have 35 wines by the glass and have recently added several different featured wine flights.” The menu list offers French and domestic varietals and blends. It includes 23 available by the half bottle or split, representing new and Old World styles. Melissa said, “Wines that are selling extremely well are those from Jim Dierberg’s superior wine operation, Pernot Puligny-Montrachet Chardonnay, and reds including Belle Glos Las Alturas Pinot Noir.” Every great meal needs a finale, and Via Vino’s dessert list doesn’t disappoint. Included are a rich and creamy tiramisu, lava cake, crème brûlée, and a moist carrot cake fresh from the oven. Viva Via Vino!

Discover Naples! Travel

Go ahead. Close your eyes and ponder "Florida," visions of the Everglades, pristine, white sand beaches, alligators, coastal mansions and ocean vistas flash into your mind ...

All this and more is Naples.

All photos courtesy of Naples Marco Island Everglades CVB

L

ocated on the Gulf side along the Southwest Florida coast in Collier County, the provocative, eclectic city of Naples rests with nearby Marco Island off the coast. Quiet, sugary sand beaches, biking, boating, fishing, golfing, nature centers, sanctuaries, shopping and, of course, the nearby Everglades make Naples the answer to any Florida vacation dream. To get there from St. Louis, you can fly US Air non-stop on their once a day flight into Ft. Myers (RSW ) the closest airport to the city. All the rest of the carriers are connections, American through Chicago, Delta through Atlanta or Cincinnati and United through Charlotte. The Ft. Myers airport is about 45 minutes north of Naples. Tampa is 165 miles away and Orlando is about a 4 to 4 1/2 hour trip. The major highway is I-75 with three exits leading to Naples. US 41 is also called Tamiami Trail and was once Southwest Florida's only highway, named for it's two most distant cities, Tampa and Miami. Many residents refer to it simply as "The Trail". In Naples, however, it is 9th Street North. In 1946, Ohio manufacturer, Henry B. Watkins, Sr. moved to Naples with his family. He started a company which purchased the original Naples Hotel, dating to the 1880s, and leased the land today occupied by the Naples Beach Hotel and Country Club. Mr. Watkins and 2 partners hired a planner and laid out the city, putting in a golf course and beginning the movement to sell luxurious homes along the coast and on Marco Island, the largest of the fabled Ten Thousand Islands. (Despite the name, the islands number only in the hundreds). Presently, some of these homes and locations are preserved resorts and very desirable real estate. Homes along the coast feature gardens, golf course views, ocean fronts, pools, verandas glass walls, Mediterranean and Spanish styles all with subtropical influence. Southwest Florida is known as the "Golf Course Capitol of the World" offering such greens as Forest Glen, Arrowhead,The Rookery at Marco Island Marriott Resort and Golf Club, La Playa (Naples' only ocean front golf and spa resort) and the oldest but updated course at the Naples Beach Hotel and Golf just to name a few. The beaches are among the safest and cleanest. Delnor-Wiggins Pass State Park's beach was voted 10th of the nations Best 25 Beaches by America's Best On Line. The beach is actually separated from the mainland by marshes and waters, giving it a sense of privacy.

Lowdermilk has 1,000 feet of beach and lies very close to 5th Avenue South, 3rd St. South and Tin City. Other beaches include Vanderbilt, Clam Pass and Tigertail on Marco Island among others that line the coast. All along the strip of Olde Naples, you can view the magnificent mansions, the Naples Pier and relax, enjoy and reflect the calm, soothing water that attracts so many residents and travelers. The beaches are not just for swimming, though these beaches do offer gentle slopes into the sea and warm water temperatures. In spring and summer, the water averages 84 degrees and in the fall and winter, the average is 71 degrees. Beaches are also for tanning and relaxing or for collecting shells. Naples beaches provide some of the best varieties of sea shells. Conches, whelks, scallops and Florida sand dollars are everywhere compared to Florida's east coast and collectors love strolls in the early mornings as they uncovering their ocean treasures. Another note regarding the beaches that is worth mentioning is that May through September is Turtle Season. You might find stakes and ribbons along the beaches which mark the tender nests of loggerhead turtles. The turtles are protected by law as they are endangered species so stay away. Even thought around 180 eggs are in each nest, only 1 out of 400 reach maturity. Just across from the Tigertail Beach area lies Sand Dollar Island, a nesting area and feeding spot for herons, egrets, ibis, terns and sandpipers, so even when on the beaches, you may want to bring your binoculars to capture the wildlife that only this area can offer. Speaking of nature, if you are truly in tune, you will find exotic signs surround you. Watch the pelicans as they fish from the local piers, notice the Mushovy ducks that cross the roads and admire the variety of insects on your windshield! For further explorations, pack your water, insect repellent, camera and binoculars and scout one of the many local sanctuaries or parks. Less than an hour away from Naples, you will find the Everglades. In the heart of the marshlands, you'll find the Shark Valley Visitor Center, complete with restrooms, limited drinks and snacks. Here, a two hour air-conditioned tram takes you to see wildlife in natural settings. Otters, alligators, water birds and bobcats amidst the cypress and mangroves trees. The Conservancy Nature Center includes butterfly and birding trails, kayak rentals, guided electric boat tours, a Discovery Center, Nature Store, Wildlife

Travel

Rehabilitation Center, and is site #69 of the Great Florida Birding Trail. Naturalists make daily presentations on the subjects of snakes, turtles, shells and other indigenous interests. The other Conservancy's center is Briggs, which is the gateway to the Ten Thousand Islands. A boardwalk takes you through a beautiful butterfly garden where 27 varieties of Florida butterfly display their splendor and through other plant communities. Other sanctuaries include the Collier Seminole State Park, the Big Cypress Natural Preserve (which is home to wild hog, black bear and Florida panthers) as well as the 11,000 acre Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary and the J.N. "Ding" Darling Wildlife Refuge. When treading water or stomping through marshlands gets too tiring and inside activities are more alluring than you ever thought possible, try a visit to the Naples Museum of Art which is part of the Philharmonic Center. This 3 story building has a glass dome conservatory and (Missouri Botanical Garden fans will love this) in the glass dome hangs a breathtaking beautiful Dale Chihuly red chandelier. The Naples Art Association calls the von Liebig Art Center home. The Art Association sponsored the placement of 72 6 ft tall fiber glass gators to appear throughout Naples which were later sold for fundraising. There is at least one remaining for public viewing at Tin City, one of Naples' most popular shopping districts. Admission to the center is free! If history is your passion, a unique museum called the Ah-Tah-Thi-Ki Museum is located on the Big Cypress Seminole Indian Reservation. The museum houses artifacts and history displays and you can observe Seminole cooking, arts and crafts in a living village, enjoy a nature trail (complete with handicap access) through more than a mile of the Big Cypress Swamp. Immerse yourself in the fabulous gift shop which offers Native American music, jewelry and crafts. On five acres of Florida gardens, the Naples Museum has much to offer. A working archaeological lab, a Seminole village, orchid house, wildlife displays, a 1910 steam locomotive and a recreated Seminole War fort and two historical cottages. Art galleries, the Naples Botanical Garden, the Palm Cottage (home of the Collier County Historical Society) are additional options to the culturally minded adventurer. The Palm Cottage is the oldest house in Naples. Sand, fun in the sun, exploring nature, culture, what else is there? Shopping! For the best selection, the famous 5th Avenue South has an abundance of boutiques, galleries, restaurants cafes and antiques. This is the Main Street of Naples. Wine shops, imported and domestic gifts, jewelry and Florida fashion abound and you will love the ambiance of the stores. Try "Island Trends", "Julie's of Naples" and the colorful "Lady From Haiti" art. Eat at "El Pampa" the Argentinean Grill, buy stationary at "Arabesque" the fine stationer and gift shop or try Italian at "Bellini on Fifth". Not all the action is on 5th Street Avenue. A few blocks away is 3rd Street South and the Avenues, which feature fountains, flower boxes and fantastic architecture.. Visit Tin City, which is on Naples Bay at Gordon's Pass. Home to a variety of shops, restaurants, boat and trolley tours and fishing charters. The site was once a clam shelling plant. Adjoining is Dockside Boardwalk which has open air shops and restaurants that overlook Naples Bay. Other shopping districts include Venetian Bay and the famous Pelican Bay and much more more. When it comes to dining, the choices are endless. Dine by the water, in the water, on the beach, the pier, go casual or fine, Caribbean, French, Greek, Spanish, Cuban, Indian, Italian, African, Chinese or Southern Fried, Naples certainly has it all. We have already mentioned one or two of the famous hotels in Naples. Hotels and motels in the area come in all brands, shapes and sizes and among the more well-known are Waldorf Astoria's Naples Grande Beach, and Edgewater Beach, Hilton Marco Island, Naples Beach Hotel and Golf Club, Ritz Carlton, Marco Island Marriott and simply gorgeous Hotel Escalante. If a hotel is not according to your needs, perhaps you would like to consider a rental property, beach house or condo. A plethora of realty companies are on line so I, of course, would recommend your local trustworthy travel agent to help you find the right reputable company and property as well as the best airfare, car rental or transfers. They can help you plan the perfect trip to Paradise. Go Ahead and live your dreams! The Southwest area offers something for every person in your family. Go ahead! Discover Naples!

Take your outgrown or unused items to one of two new resale/consignment stores, then reward yourself at one (or more) of the new hotspots recently opened around St. Louis. (Re)Fresh: A Fashion Coalition (1701 S. Brentwood Blvd., Brentwood, 314-367-8373, refreshstl.org) will open later this month. Run by and for the Foster & Adoptive Care Coalition, the retail store creates revenue, clothing and job training experience for its population of foster teens. The store will be open to the public Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays (to foster and adoptive families on Thursdays) and specializes in clothing for teens and twenties. Its community outreach will also extend to local high school and college students by providing volunteer opportunities through work in the store and organizing clothing drives. To make a clothing donation (size 12 youth and up), please contact Jen at 314-660-6646. Potentials (12392 Olive Boulevard in the Westgate Shopping Centre, behind TGIF, Creve Coeur, 314469-2024, potentialsresale.org, ) celebrated its grand opening April 5th. This upscale resale and consignment boutique just West of 270 on Olive, supports Youth in Need which serves over 11,000 St. Louis area teens and families each year. You'll find not only designer and department store labels for teens, men and women but also home accessories and furnishings. Remember, since all proceeds go to charity, shopping is tax-free! Merchandise is accepted daily (except Mondays) and taken either on a consignment basis or as a donation. Hours: Tues-Fri 10-7, Sat 10-5, Sun 12-4, closed Mondays.

Water Street Cafe (7268 Manchester Rd, Maplewood, 314-646-8355, waterstreetstl.com) is comfortable and off kilter just enough so, that you'll keep coming back for more. Consider their "Forgotten Cocktails" weekly special. Think "Mad Men" with drinks like Sidecars and Brandy Alexanders yet concocted with made in-house maraschino cherries, pickled onions and their own flavored liquors and spirit blends. Where else can you order a punch bowl for four? They also offer out of the ordinary non-alcoholic quaffs like Zombies and Muddled Raspberries. And half bottles of wine are plentiful. Owner Gabe Kveton describes the menu as "eclectic bistro." Sister Maria Kveton acts as chef specializing in market fresh featured flat breads boasting local, organic ingredients. She balances that with comfort food like chicken pot pies and beef bourgignon stew using some of Grandma Pauline Kveton's family recipes. Truly a family endeavor, Grandma even did the lettering on the bistro awnings. Open Tuesday through Saturdays, 5 pm - 1 am, the kitchen stays open until midnight every day making this the perfect place to pop in for a drink and a bite before or after a show. Salt (4356 Lindell, St. Louis, 314-932-5757, enjoysalt.com) newly opened in the space previously occupied by Savor, is the latest entrĂŠe into the St. Louis restaurant scene. Wes Johnson, formerly with Shaved Duck and Eclipse brings a tantalizing menu with a wide selection of charcuterie including a citrus gravlox and a pork and black garlic rillette. Entrees include everything from a cornmeal-stuffed saddle of rabbit to a pork steak with apple butter risotto. Since this is not your usual fare, it is definitely worth the trip. Open for dinner from Wednesday through Monday, 5 to 11 (closed Tuesdays) and Saturday and Sunday Brunch, 10 - 2. St. Louis Wing Co (9816 Manchester Road, Webster Groves, 314-962-9464, stlwingco.com) does wings - and a few sides. But not just any wings. Chef Bobby Tessler, formerly of Mia Rosa and Wildflower brings his expertise to create an appetizing new treat for St. Louis. His wings come, either bone-in or boneless, in 12 different flavors including Fresh Herb Walnut Pesto, Spicy Fresh Jalapeno, Traditional Hot and Coconut Curry. Along with standard sides of fries and slaw there are also tantalizing accompaniments like Fried Macaroni Wedges - crunchy on the outside, creamy on the inside, and Sweet Potato Fries with Jerk Chili Mayonnaise. Perfect for lunch or a party (Family Packs come in 30, 50 or 100 pieces) these are sure to become a St. Louis classic that will rival toasted ravioli. Open Sunday through Thursday 10 - 9, and Friday and Saturday 10 - 10.

Clean your closets and add a few new things (how can you resist when it's tax-free) and enjoy a broad variety of native St. Louis cooking.
