S T R E E T F A C E L I F T S HAMDAN STREET The first of 9 streets is Hamdan street which is a distinctive mixed used boulevard positioned in a prominent location in the heart of Abu Dhabi. The design aims at reactivation and redefinition of the street through visual, physical and sense of public realm enhancements to establish it as a city landmark, a pedestrian and cyclist friendly boulevard and as the main gateway into downtown, improving the street experience and enhancing Liveability.

The design concept is the ‘pipeline’, functioning as a single system, the ‘pipeline’ extends down the urban centre transforming in subtle ways at each block and offering a highly localized and personal experience along the way. The multifunctional structure will snake down the street, synchronizing shade elements, lighting, pocket parks and a visual wayfinding system along its route. The structure itself defines the iconography of the street.

S T R E E T F A C E L I F T S ALYAHAR STREET The vision for and approach to the redesign for Al Yahar Street begins with the recognition of its civic capacity. Al Yahar street comprises numerous independent stores and restaurants. The conceptual approach focuses on elevating and expanding the street into an international marketplace, one that celebrates the uniting of people and the overall goal will provide an unparalleled pedestrian experience.

professional work//2020

13

The design for Al Yahar Street established in the Concept design stage, focused on envisioning the street to become a marketplace destination and a benchmark for the 21st century Arabic Street. The street will include iconic shade structures to allow extended hours of comfortable use throughout each season while also functioning as an overhead mapping system that guides pedestrians towards lush pocket parks. With options for temporary vehicular removal, the new public realm will facilitate event programming while providing a complete pedestrian dedicated experience during market times.

The design is focused on a strong integration between vegetation and hardscape for this active large scale mixed use street along with providing pedestrians with more opportunities for connectedness in action and in stillness. Tall shading trees and plentiful seating will offer respite for those visiting hospitals while the continuous sheltered pathways encourage pedestrian and cyclist connectivity to the rest of downtown

S U S T A I N A B L E C I T Y In this project, pedestrians are given the priority with giving them back the ground level and creating tunnels and different paths for vehicles. When vehicles are given lower roads this helps keep air fresher on the pedestrian level, also greenery helps filter that air and keeps it fresh. By doing that, the area is less accident prone and more environmental friendly. Plaza’s and meeting points are built underground to shield from the direct sun-rays and lower the overall temperature. Residential buildings are placed in reference with vernacular architecture which puts every 2 houses adjacent to each other creating liwans between them which provide shade for pedestrians. This master plan relies on smart city solutions & alternative sources of energy like p.v. panels and plant-based biofilters to purify waste water in residential units.

jebel hafeet, alain city

F A R M L A B FARM LAB is a research center for Jebel Hafeet botany species studies which include an Archaeology HQ, education center and Botanic Studies Hub. This one of a kind building addresses the needs of scientists and educators from basic shelter needs to recreational needs. The design is made up of 3 organic shapes that act together as one inside the mountain. The north east placement provides large openings without direct sunlight. The concept behind this design explores parasitic architecture in which the building acts as a parasite clinging onto the Jebel Hafeet mountain.

ORGANISM In order to design the building as a Learning Tool, we looked at the language of science for inspiration. Buildings are rooted to a time and place - rooted to the landscape in which they sit. Our research therefore started with the landscape of Dubai. This quickly led us to the Desert, which form such a fundamental backdrop to life in UAE. Studying the rose-like formations of crystal clusters of gypsum or baryte called Desert Rose led us to discovering the beauty of those formations found in the desert around the UAE. The beauty of these crystal formations is strong in its various shapes that occur when the crystals form in arid sandy conditions, such as the evaporation of a shallow salt basin. The crystals form a circular array of flat plates, giving the rock a shape similar to a rose blossom.

DISCOVERYCENTER MARRAK ECH Our research started with the landscape of Marrakech. This quickly led us to the Atlas Mountains, which form such a fundamental backdrop to life in Morocco and Marrakech itself. Studying the formation and geology of the Atlas Mountains led us to examine continental drift and the formation of the earth itself. What we found was truly inspiring. Over the eons, large tectonic plates called “cratons have drifted around the globe forming continents and supercontinents. There have been up to seven super continental eras on Earth. Pangea, the most recent of these supercontinents is probably also the most well-known. Scientists have recreated what they believe is the most likely configuration of Pangea from meticulous study of the fossil and geological records, and what we have discovered has surprising implications for this project.

44 EVENTS SPACE The ground floor and its associated event spaces (cafe, event space, the podium plaza, and the outdoor amphitheater is designed with flexibility and adaptability in mind. Depending on the requirements of the events and the size of the groups the spaces can be combined for one larger free-flowing event, or separated into individual spaces. The Second Floor roof Terrace can also be used for events.

The program at Discovery Centre Marrakech is divided between ticketed spaces, and non-ticketed spaces with less restricted access. The majority of the Ground Floor is non-ticketed, and can therefore be used by the general public who want to visit the cafe or attend an open event in the Lobby or Atrium. The first and second floors are ticketed gallery spaces.

S T E E L E B U I L D I N G E N T R A N C E This organic design was chosen to imitate the ocean and contrast the existing harsh instituional exterior building design giving it a new identity. The entrance design concept is a shell on a beach before submerging into the ocean depths. The shell structure on the entrance area attracts visitors and becomes a symbol for the building, while also making the building more identifiable as a ocean science center. The exterior entrance is only the start as visitors enter they will find a dark projection hall which will include hi-tech projectors that give the sense of being underwater, which ignites sensory stimulation.
