China's rapid urbanization has accelerated a large number of migrant workers entering the cities in search of job opportunities. They often live in urban villages, due to economic constraints. Urban villages are like independent urban units, which contains all the conditions people need for basic life, but there also lies many problems. The chaotic streets and ultra-high-density buildings hinder residents from pursuing a better living environment. In order to meet the diverse requirements of local residents for life, this project hopes to reorganize the site elements to create a building unit that can make residents feel intimacy and city identity.

Due to the low rent, many people who come to work in the city will regard this place as there first home. However the population growthmakes the living condition worse than ever; at the same time, those rural migrant workers cannot get access to the excellent public resources around them on account of finantial and identity problems.

I am a new migrant worker, I came to live here because of the cheap rent. It is hard to f ind a rel iable job in metroplis because there is too much false information, I hope there can build an information center where I can share dependable information with others.

I a m a vendor , sel l i ng th i ngs on the roadside every day. The business goes well, but the traffic i s da ngerou s . Not on l y do you worry about the merchandise being run over by the cars, but also worry about the customer being knocked down by the car.

We l i ke t o pl ay ga me s by the street , however our parents do not allow us to play for the safety i ssue. There are lots of factories and they use big trucks to deliver cargo, the surroundings is dangerous and polluted. We eager to find a safe place to play.

We have l ived here for decades, l ife is real ly convenient here. We don’t have much hobbies but play mahjong and cards. Usually we play by the road because there is no spare to acommodate the table, therefore we hope to have a comfortable chess room.

The climate in Chongqing is too humid, it often rains, and because of the narrow living space there usually have no balcony. So it is really inconvenient to do the laundry and the clothes cannot be dr ied al l the time. I really want a place to wash and dry the clothes.

We middle aged people have nothing to do after work, all we can do is sitting on the front porch and play mobile games. Besides we do not have some space to communicate or play with our neighbors. It would be great if we can have an activity center to have fun.

In the past 70 years, Chongqing has achieved unpercedented development in economy and urbanization. However, in addition to the significant growth of economy, urbanization and population of migrant workers, increase of various indicators per capita for migrant workers is evident lower than the overall growth level of the city. This led to a decline in the living standards of migrant workers in the city. In Chongqing, many migrant workers choose urban villages as their first home, sharing in small rooms with their colleages or their family members which descend their per capita living area less than 10 ㎡ . Besides, they cannot enjoy the city's developed entertainment facilities, information exchange platforms and medical resources. This kind of life is tough, they are still full of hope, dreaming to take roots in this city, however. As a result , this project aims to build a service center with a better public space conditions for migrate workers who live in Xinqiao Industrial Park, to meet their multiple needs, become a new start for them to pursue a better life.

The buildings in urban villages often have unique expressions in different interfaces due to the perennial repair and cost control. A variety of different expressions can be extracted from the inherent elements of the various interfaces or auxiliary components of the urban village buildings, and form a set of menu system. Under this menu system, assembly components using inherent elements can be spliced into a variety of building modules Or public facilities, becoming part of the activity center and street plug-in. At the same time, different components have different frequencies of use. The higher the frequency, the stronger the common attributes of the components.

Spring Semester 2018-2019 05/2019 Guizhou, China Academic, Chongqing University Instructed by Meng Yang Email: mengyang@cqu.edu.cn Individual work All drawing presented acredited to Yang Chengdai

Each piece of land should have its own story, but under the coercion of commercialization, whether it is a city or a village, a plain or a mountainous area, the scenes seen are gradually homogenized. In Guizhou, China, many ethnic minority villages are facing the loss of regional characteristics in order to cater to commercial travel patterns. At the same time, people have gradually lost the opportunity to truly come into contact with nature and tradition. In order to reconstruct the relationship between human beings, nature and culture, the project hopes to reshape a landscape trail that grows on the mountain in the valley of Tuhe Village, so that people can truly abandon impetuousity while walking in the mountains, as well as feel the unique natural environment and cultural atmosphere of the minority mountain village.

TOURISM RESOURCES

Lotus pond Tuhe, Guizhou Province, located in the mountainous area of southwestern China, it is the settlement of the Miao people. The rolling mountains and abundant water resources in Tuhe have allowed the Miao people to build terrace fields and lotus ponds in the valley. Due to its margin location, the ethnic customs and traditional farming industries of Tuhe have been well preserved. Mountains, water, and terraces are the unique elements of Tuhe, and they are also popular places for people to visit and travel.

Pseudo-classical architecture

The lotus pond is the core of the Tuhe landscape. It developed from the river valley and is also an important part of the Tuhe farming industry. In addition, lotus flowers often symbolize tranquility in traditional culture.

This area is a commercial area built by developers. It used to be popular in the traditional travel mode, but people are getting tired of this kind of commercial travel mode and search for something more unsophisticated.

Threshing field

The starting point of the trail is at the back of the original granary. The platform behind the granary is a traditional threshing ground, where the aborigines dry and process the rice. Visitors can experience the rice production process up close in the stands at the back of the threshing ground, and they can also have direct contact with the terraces behind them. Here visitors can enter into the nature.

NOSTALGIA TRAIL

Lotus pond

The trail rises along the contour line and reaches a suitable height to view the lotus pond at the southernmost side of the site. The lotus pond has the best view from this viewpoint. The inclination angle of the inner wall of the building is consistent with the view direction of the scenery. At the same time, the partition wall can ensure a private atmosphere, allowing people to meditate and get connection with nature while watching the lotus pond.

Fire pond

The fire pond is located on the terraces on the upper side of the traditional houses. Due to its higher position, you can see the buildings at the foot of the mountain and the opposite bank of the lotus pond, and you can see the daily life of traditional residents. The fire pond is also an activity place for the Miao people. Visitors can participate in traditional activities while watching the scenery and feeling the natural atmosphere.

Observation tower

The tower is an important part of the Miao culture, and it often entrusts the inheritance and review of the culture. The observation tower is at the end of the trail system. It is located on the highest ridge, where visitors can see the cloud-filled karst landform, which is also the original living environment of the Miao people. On the tower, people can go back to the trails of the previous actions, and re-feel and think about the beauty of nature and farming culture

Brisbane is a famous tourist city in Australia. The leisure spirit and abundant public activities of the locals can be seen in every corner of the city. Brisbane's largest cricket court is located next to the site. Its unique natural attributes and sports atmosphere are important elements to be considered. The project expects to re-examine the meaning of high-rise buildings from a regional perspective, integrate a public building into the place, and continue the spirit of place. Maximize the urban interaction energy in the shaping of the space, and integrate the randomness and combination of existing and potential modern activities into different parts of the building.

Brisbane has formed a multi-center development model under the convenient urban transportation network. People's enthusiasm for sports makes the city's sports industry and diversity highly developed. Thus population, transportation, development trends, and specific sport activities have become vital components of each center. Through the analysis of multiple elements, it can be found that in the site, Woolloongabba, the elements of sports and the rapidly growing young population are the most unique elements, which also became the focus of the design.

The site is located at the old printing factory site in woolloongabba, which was designed to be one of the most vibrant areas in Brisbane. Convenient public transportation and expressways connect it closely with several other central areas and at the same time, they bring good business prospects here. The gabba is the largest and most historic stadium in Brisbane. It hosts a large number of games every week, attracting hundreds of thousands of people to watch sports events through the site. But through site status survey, the lack of complete public facilities is not enough to meet the needs of a large number of people.

SPORTS IN WOOLLOONGABBA

CONCEPT

Since Brisbane became an settlement in the early 19th century, sports have been introduced here. Brisbane's sports have gone through multiple stages of development and formed a huge sports industry. As the earliest development area of Brisbane sport industries, Woolloongabba have became an indispensable part of the sport lives of Brisbane residents. People are engaged in various sports in this area all the time.

When designing a high-rise building, we need more than simple modeling and functional requirements. A public building should be integrated into the place and give a new definition to the place. Under the condition of diversified site, we need to think about how to use the crucial element, sports, as a link to limit the combination and randomness of activity behavior to a specific space and maximize urban vitality.

The combination of sports and other urban elements can reshape the space. After screening the urban elements, industry, tourism, urban culture and nature are combined with sports to form a building with a sense of identity.

In the 19th century, a large number of immigrants brought a sports boom, and many marshes were built into cricket grounds. At Woolloongabba, the site location, a brand new stadium was leased to the Cricket Association and professional games began to hold.

After World War I, the sports industry in Brisbane boomed and began to become international. In 1931, the Gabba stadium hosted the first international sports event, which laid the foundation for the subsequent internationalization of the sports industry.

Entering the millennium, the sports industry has achieved unprecedented development. The branch venue of the Sydney Olympics in Brisbane has brought unlimited opportunities here. More state-level leagues have been held in this area and formed a sports center.

SPORTS

Nowadays, sports industry is very mature, with multiple leagues being held here every week. During the game, millions of people will come to Brisbane to watch the game. And the government is also making more investments to host international events.

The shape of the building is limited by site elements. The texture of the old and new towns respectively defines the north-south outline of the building, and the path from the traffic station to the stadium makes the building separate into two towers. During peak periods, crowds can gather and relax at both ends of the venue. The elevated building volume increases the outdoor public space and provides outdoor activities for the crowd. The broadened public space is subdivided into different functional areas ( sports courts etc. ), according to the needs of the crowd. The interior space of the building incorporates different functions according to different openness and spatial attributes. As the most important sports element, different spaces meet the different characteristics of the sports industry, from the lower-level public open sports field and product display area to the middle-level indoor playground and series track, and then to the high-level product development.

Louis Kahn once mentioned: "Cities began as public open spaces and streets as places of communication. Interpersonal communication is the origin of the city. But now these streets have become channels only for transport, and are no longer subordinate to the neighborhoods where he coexists. So there are only roads instead of streets." Chongqing has one of the most complex terrain among big cities in China. From the river bank to the top of the mountain, countless vertical transportation systems connect people together and produce many unique street forms. People live along the streets, where they can have all kinds of activities. In the Liziba area where the site is located, the complex topography hinders the occurrence of block activities, and streets have gradually lost the function of public activities, and the blocks are not resurrected either. The project focuses on how to refine the appropriate neighborhood environment from the traditional traffic mode, and derive a variety of public spaces to connect streets at all levels, while providing users with space for activities.

Yuzhong District, one of the oldest urban area in Chongqing is where the site located. The long-term wharf culture and mountainous terrain make it a center of Chongqing culture. From the riverside to the top of the mountain, three-dimensional traffic connects the areas located on different elevations. The cascading roads and the alleys between the buildings make this place full of disenchanted hustle and bustle of the secular life, and diverse life scenarios are staged here from sunrise to early morning. The site is located in the center of the city, it is a combination of regional culture and mountain topography. 21

CONNECTION

The site rises along the river, and the total height difference between the normal water level and the upper part of the site is about 50m. Receiving the restrictions of the terrain, the original block is roughly divided into four floors, namely the riverside zone, the viaduct space, the historical building complex and the subway station. The riverside zone and viaduct space are commonly used by local residents, mainly for water activities such as swimming or fishing. The historical buildings and the traffic building are popular attractions because of their unique shapes. The site are currently only connected by steep stairs, so they are relatively fragmented.

In the process of mechanized construction, the differences of individual buildings are ignored, the space is also separated and independent, and standardized construction has caused great losses in the city's individual development. At the same time, more and more urban public spaces are oppressed by buildings. In the university town area of China, this phenomenon has become particularly obvious. Urban space is divided by roads, communities, buildings, and schools to form a complex integrated land. However, such a complex space carries the most active and diverse public activities. As the most common phenomenon, square dancing often invades basketball courts, and residents of different communities dominate campus playgrounds; unreasonable space processing and division make the right to use the space more chaotic. How to coordinate the direct use of multiple communities, and how to find a balance between the occasional steady-state event behavior and the long-standing unplanned shared life are an important part of the design.
