WELCOME
Colorado is famous for its world-class skiing in the winter and great mountain hiking and biking in the summer. But visitors to our state often are surprised to learn that autumn in Colorado brings out some of the most gorgeous scenery, with forests awash in waves of color that take your breath away. If you have time for a quick jaunt to the foothills or deeper into the mountains, this is a don’t-miss activity. Okay, you’ve checked the scenic tour off your list; now you can focus on what’s going on in the Mile High city. Step outside your hotel, and on any given Sunday in the fall you will be bombarded by a bright orange haze that seems to color the streets, the shops and restaurants, the very landscape. Fall in Colorado is synonymous with the Denver Broncos, and fans here are fierce in their loyalty and love for the team. If you’re lucky enough to score a ticket, you’ll be privy to a memorable experience, sitting among 76,000 avid fans who are cheering, applauding and supporting the home team.
(And if you happen to be rooting for the opponent, that’s okay, just don’t expect an invitation to a tailgate party!). It’s pretty much impossible to talk about the Denver Broncos without making mention of John Elway, the legend who helped usher in a new winning era of football. He came to Denver in 1982, played quarterback for 16 seasons, raised a family here and now works behind the scenes as the team’s general manager and VP of football operations. As the 2014 football season began, Denver Hotel Magazine sat down with Mr. Elway to learn a bit more about the man who took Denver sports by storm. When there’s no football there’s still plenty to do in Denver, beginning with the fantastic new Union Station. The stunning venue recently opened to the public and features an incredible renovation of the historic train station, and many hip restaurants, bars and shops. This should be a definite stop during your stay. If you’re looking for a change from the urban
landscape of downtown and love to shop, shop, shop, head a bit south to Cherry Creek, where you’ll find fabulous boutiques filled with the season’s hottest trends. The Cherry Creek Mall is one of the best in the country, and the surrounding shops and restaurants of Cherry Creek North are true gems. Whether you need great corporate gifts, adorable outfits for your kids or a little something for yourself, you won’t walk away empty-handed. Denver is one of the fastestgrowing cities in the nation, and signs of progress and development are everywhere. New hotels, new stores, new neighborhoods. It’s all here, and it’s a great place to be!

The Secret Is Out A Great Time to Invest in Colorado Denver was the fastest-moving housing market in the nation in July according to the National Association of Realtors (out of 140 metro areas surveyed). It took an average of just 27 days to sell a home, compared with about two months nationally. Denver has experienced a “good energy” market since the first quarter of 2012 and continues to impress as we close the third quarter of 2014. After nearly three years of growth, the reasons behind this success are apparent: • Supply of available inventory for sale has not met current demand • Interest rates have remained very attractive, and • Consumer confidence continues to improve.
From a strictly real estate investment viewpoint, Denver has experienced approximately 30 percent price appreciation since the first quarter of 2012, making it a nationally known emerging city with optimistic designs for the future. Within this vibrant and progressive real estate market, buyers can gain a competitive edge if they: • Get pre-qualified for financing and accompany an offer to buy with a pre-approval letter from a respected lender. • Ask your realtor to determine the seller’s preferred dates for closing and possession. • Keep all your contract contingency dates efficient for inspections, approvals etc.
In the most recent WalletHub.com survey, Denver ranked Number One in the nation for employment and earning opportunities. Denver was compared to the 150-largest U.S. cities using 18 different metrics including: number of new businesses, increased median household income, home price appreciation, foreclosure rate decrease and the drop in the employment rate (5.3% compared to the national average hovering above 6%). And it gets even better when you introduce characteristics such as the weather, recreational opportunities, all major sports, the educated populace, more parks per capita of any major city, many cultural venues, concerts, median age of 33, good public
transportation (and improving), eco-friendly city and state, and oh yeah … the mountains in winter and summer. Denver and Colorado have become desired destination locations, both because it’s so enjoyable to live here, and because these areas are regarded as economically bright and promising. The secret is out! — STEVE BLANK

Golden: A Holiday Snapshot of Colorado’s Favorite Hometown
14
D E N V E R H OT E L M A G A Z I N E
Author Thomas Wolfe wrote You Can’t Go Home Again, his novel’s title now a catch phrase for more than 100 years. But no one says you can’t feel at home again! Enter Golden, Colorado. Born as the Territorial Capital of Colorado, this small town has a heart as big as the Rockies and the sophistication that comes with insightful city planning, a high aura of academia from MIT’s sister university, Colorado School of Mines, and recreational opportunities galore. A few minutes west of Denver via light rail, I-70 or Highway 6, getting there is convenient and easy. Historic Downtown Golden is burrowed between North and South Table Mountains and Mt. Zion, the first foothill that, via the scenic Lariat Loop, leads you to the big boys of the Rockies. There is so much to do and see on any given day in Golden, including in autumn and winter months. Cultural opportunities range from the nationally acclaimed Foothills Art
Center to Miner’s Alley Playhouse and the Jefferson County Symphony. Clear Creek Historic Park showcases original structures from around the state, brought in to create an authentic Old West town. It’s located directly across from the Pioneer Museum, the perfect adjunct to the pioneer village. Dining out can range from casual wood-fired pizza and craft beer to fine dining at any number of restaurants; Grappa, Indulge or Bridgewater Grill. Table Mountain Grill & Cantina is a favorite, presenting casual dining in a beautiful setting; southwest fare at its best. For something truly unique, visit the Colorado Railroad Museum and check availability in the dining car, an intimate dining experience for couples and groups. Terrific breakfast and lunch choices are peppered throughout downtown. For outdoor enthusiasts, golf at award-winning Fossil Trace is a huge hit and the course is kept in PGA condition. Hiking to the top of Castle Rock on South Table Mountain is a favorite
trek, ending atop a prehistoric volcanic “plug” that garnered its moniker for its fortresslike appearance. The American Mountaineering Center is located near the Golden Visitor’s Center and boasts a climbing wall and a detailed model of Mt. Everest. Clear Creek Trail offers paved walkways that flank each side of scenic Clear Creek. Open to foot traffic year round, the winter ice formations in the ever-flowing creek provide an art show in and of itself. Shopping abounds in this bastion of specialty shops, from climbing gear to children’s toys. The pre-holiday and holiday seasons have business owners’ doors wide open, offering hot cider, special wine nights and friendly faces as you peruse interesting clothing boutiques, stunning galleries, an elegant jewelry store, trendy gift and home accessory stores and craft beer breweries. Venture off Washington Avenue, where each corner has shops you don’t want to miss.
What better time to plan a day in Golden than when the autumn leaves fall lushly along the creek? First Fridays bring throngs who enjoy extended hours at Golden’s favorite shops and venues. October sees the annual Trick or Treat Street, where Disney princesses and zombies stop in at local businesses for candy, refreshments and a family-friendly environment. In November, great restaurants serve up a perfect Thanksgiving dinner. In early December, the hugely popular Olde Golden Christmas heralds the magic of the season as only “Everyone’s Hometown” can. It all begins on December 5 as the Candlelight Walk ushers in Golden’s unique and heartwarming holiday events. Beginning at the top of Washington Avenue in front of Foothills Art Center, people from miles around join in a candlelight parade down historic Washington Avenue, singing holiday carols and whooping it up as they make their way to the Golden Visitor’s Center for the countdown to
the simultaneous lighting of the holiday tree and thousands of lights strung along Clear Creek. Candles are available from volunteers at Foothills Art Center for 50 cents each. On December 6th, 13th and 20th, Golden’s traditional holiday parade begins at 11 a.m. and winds through town, including Santa on a motorcycle chasing down the Grinch in his corvette, equestrian teams, horse-drawn wagons and cowboys. Victorian carolers singing on street corners and a brass trio provide ongoing entertainment with snappy barbershop quartets strolling to their special brand of vocalizing. For all of the fun, the best part is that when you visit Golden, it feels like going home. Parking and events are free! For all details about Fall and holiday events in Golden, please go to VisitGolden.com.

Rocky Mountain High John Fielder Pays Homage to John Denver and the Beauty of Colorado
JOHN DENVER Tribute for Wilderness
John Fielder’s Colorado Gallery
John Fielder is Colorado’s best-known nature photographer. He is the photographer/author of more than 40 Colorado picture and guidebooks, and operates a gallery in Denver’s Art District on Santa Fe. He also performs 40 musical slide shows annually, occasionally accompanied to live music. In October Fielder conducts his most exciting performance yet at the 2,800-seat Buell Theatre. This year’s show celebrates the 50th anniversary of America’s Wilderness Act and features new John Fielder wilderness photographs spanning Colorado to Alaska. On a 35-foot screen above the stage, Fielder will project and choreograph 40 years of his nature photography to the words and music of the great John Denver. Since John Denver’s untimely death in 1997, John Adams and his seven-member band have committed themselves to keeping alive the Rocky Mountain legend’s music. The event benefits Colorado environmental and conservation non-profit organizations. Part of the profits from ticket sales return to organizations such as the Wilderness Society, Sierra Club, and Conservation Colorado helping to continue their work to protect America’s remaining wildlands as new wilderness areas.
John Fielder’s Colorado is located in a restored 6,000 square-foot brick building in the heart of Denver’s Art District on Santa Fe. The gallery contains more than 100 of Fielder’s most popular images beautifully framed, some in panoramic format as large as 10 feet, and a framing shop. The book department contains all of Fielder’s Colorado titles, many already autographed, as well as his Colorado calendars and note cards. John Fielder photography graces the walls of public buildings, restaurants, corporate offices, hotels, and hospitals throughout Colorado and beyond. Recent installations include the new Ralph J. Carr Judicial Center, History Colorado museum, Spago Restaurant in Bachelor Gulch, the J.W. Marriott Cherry Creek, and Elway’s Cherry Creek. John Fielder has worked tirelessly to promote the protection of Colorado’s ranches, open space, and wildlands during his 33-year career as a nature photographer and publisher. His photography has influenced people and legislation, earning him recognition including the Sierra Club’s Ansel Adams Award in 1993 and, in 2011, the Aldo Leopold Foundation’s first Achievement Award given to an individual.

ana Rodriguez epitomizes the notion that no matter where you started, you can rise to the top in your field. Born in Chihuahua, Mexico, Rodriguez came to the United States in 1998, a single mom seeking a better life for her family. She quickly received her work card and found employment as a dishwasher for Ben Davis, the opening chef at Panzano, a popular downtown restaurant. She spoke no English, had no culinary background, and was a female working in a male-dominated profession. But this outspoken woman quickly worked her way up. While her folks took care of the babies, Rodriguez held down three jobs in order to make enough money to support everyone. Working at Panzano, Samba Room and Kevin Taylor, she quickly learned the art of cooking under the tutelage of Denver’s top chefs. She advanced to pantry chef
at the same time acclaimed chefs Jennifer Jasinski and Beth Gruitch arrived to run Panzano. Under the strong advice and mentoring of Jasinski and Gruitch, she worked her way up to sous chef, earning the nickname Loca (crazy), a moniker that remains today. When Jasinski and Gruitch decided to venture out and open Rioja (its success is welldocumented), the duo invited Rodriguez, or Loca, to invest and become a minor partner. She accepted, again climbing to the top position of executive chef at another of their restaurants, Bistro Vendome. She often jokes about people meeting her and saying “A Latino cooks French?” Smiling, the reply is often, “I speak Spanglish and can cook it all.” In her early days working at Panzano, Rodriguez met bartender Tony Maciag. The two became close friends who talked and dreamed of one day opening their own spot. Eventually Loca, Maciag, and the divine Delores Tronco teamed up, and Work & Class was borne.
The concept was developed when Kevin Morrison, owner of Pinche Taco, sent developer Ryan Diggins to the trio with the novel idea of using shipping crates for a building design. They trio said yes and nine crates later (adding up to 1,600 square feet,) Work & Class opened for business. The contemporary ambience features a huge mural depicting the “working class” of Detroit. Big windows, wood, a combination of small and community tables and two bars set the scene for 53 lucky diners who fill the place nightly. Great food, wines, cocktails, incredible service, and affordable prices come to life as Loca takes the spotlight in the open kitchen, where you can watch her and the staff prepare incredible dishes with graceful speed and efficiency. She gives full credit and kudos to Victor Mena, sous chef, who worked at Rioja with Loca and became chef de cuisine at Root Down, and Vinny Sosa, sous chef, who was at Rioja and Euclid Hall (he is also Loca’s fiancé). Both men

play a big part in making this machine work perfectly. It’s a treat to watch them all work side by side nightly as they turn out 400 meals. Maciag and Tronco bring excitement and total competence to the front of the house, completing the recipe for the success of Work & Class. The place is tiny, the Latino/ American fare divine. The menu is divided between appetizers, mains and sides. Begin with the best blue corn empanadas, shrimp ceviche, lamb chorizo sausage and melon salad. The massive attack salad with tempura broccoli, asparagus, avocado, spinach, cucumber, and pecorino, salmon balls, chickpea fritters, and meatballs Jersey style in honor of Maciag are more fun choices. Awesome peppers five ways combine spicy flavors with bacon-wrapped jalapenos, Fresno poppers, grilled shishitos, pickled peppers and pepper jam. Choose chicken (Jamaican jerk or rosemary), goat, citrus-mustard short ribs, coriander lamb, or cornmeal fried catfish in three
portion sizes for your entrée, and add sides of corn, sweet plantains, heirloom tomatoes, mac and cheese, sweet potato fries, chickpea croquettes, rice and polenta. Some don’t-miss items are the jalapeno cornbread, griddled goat cheese masa, and housemade biscuits to complete the meal. End with divine mini butterscotch pudding, fruit cobbler or bread pudding. The bar scene complements the kitchen, where they’ll serve up great cocktails, wines and beer. The signature whiskey, pomegranate and summer peach rosemary with tequila, rum, or whiskey is worth the trip. Always mobbed, even the wait is fun as half-price apps are served to the patient crowd. The trio says they are “blessed”, but I have a feeling there’s a lot more to their recipe for success. In a few words, they are just that good! It’s a privilege to know Loca and she is a joy to be around. She truly is an inspiration, from her story to her talent and her ability
to improve the lives of so many she touches. On Facebook she writes “Opening a restaurant is a big challenge. After I opened Work & Class and then my “sister Beth Gruitch” opened Stoic & Genuine, it is important to remember a business is just a job. But you still have a life with friends and family. I appreciate every moment with my family, my fiancé, my “sister”, and good friends. Any time becomes special to use that time to appreciate life, love, and friendship.” Dana Rodriguez continues to delight with her humor and humble attitude, and an outrageous talent for cooking the best food around.

hat’s the slogan at Denver’s new Crawford Hotel. “Like no other.” It may sound like a boast, but go visit. You’ll see. It’s true in dozens of ways. Named for Denver pioneer preservationist Dana Crawford, the hotel aims to give visitors a unique experience, a quiet snug of luxury tucked inside the refurbished and redeveloped Union Station, a major transportation hub in the American West. The entrance to the Crawford Hotel is framed by the grand gateway to Union Station — a totally refurbished train depot with deep roots in Denver history.

Longtime Denver resident Dana Crawford is the town’s premiere preservationist, known as the Mother of LoDo (Lower Downtown). Her visionary activism saved Larimer Square from the wrecking ball during the ‘60s movement known as Urban Renewal. Rather than tear things down to build new things, she saw the importance of reinventing the old and, in the process, saving the soul of downtown Denver, creating places for people to gather, to celebrate a city. She has had a hand in preserving more than 800,000 square feet of Mile High history. In addition to Larimer Square, you can count the iconic Oxford Hotel and, now, Union Station. Before coming to Denver, Crawford studied at the University of Kansas and Harvard-Radcliffe. She worked on the station project for 30 years – but she says that it’s not necessarily her crowning achievement. “I always say my next project is going to be the one I love the most. But truly, I have worked on this for so long. They wanted to tear it down at one point, and look at it, just look at it now. I call it the city’s living room. I really think it is.” Did she ever think that the project would never happen? “Not really,” Crawford insists. “I was really in tune with what was going on in the East Coast in Washington, D.C., and Grand Central in New York. This building is a lot smaller than Grand Central, but it still has a lot of that monumental presence.” She was deeply involved with the development and construction of the hotel, but Crawford originally resisted the idea of the name. Calling it The Crawford didn’t seem, well, seemly. “I’m trying to get used to it,” she says. “A lot of people have been enthusiastic about it. But (my son) said it was pretentious. My mother brought me up that you were supposed to be in the newspaper three times: Born, married, died. But people seem to like the name, so I’ll be all right about it.”
Building a new hotel within an iconic Denver landmark was challenging — and rewarding.
iconic Tattered Cover, a coffee shop, a burger and brat bar, an ice creamery, the Terminal Bar, a sandwich shop and a florist/ boutique. “Welcome to my office,” says Crawford as she settles into a couch in the Great Hall. She spends many an afternoon here. “I love to come in here just to watch everybody. It’s like watching America. People come in here and they go, “Oh.” And then they smile. And then they start taking pictures. And then people walk around holding hands. I mean, they just love it.” Above the Great Hall, the Cooper serves as the hotel bar and greets the guests in stylish understatement. It’s an intimate, elegant, yesteryear canteen that serves classic craft cocktails with a Denver twist – and appetizers
delivered from Stoic & Genuine, the high-end seafood restaurant that rules the waves downstairs. Think caviar, oysters and chilled lobster served aside a Timeless Fashioned made with Peach Street Straight Bourbon. The east windows look into the heart of Downtown Denver blurred by a waving American flag. The west faces the hubbub of the Great Hall and the windows lead your gaze to the Front Range of the Rocky Mountains. “I love the Cooper Bar and everyone loves it because it has this real sense of Denver,” says Crawford. “You look right up 17th Street and the furniture is elegant and very comfortable and the service is impeccable. It’s just a stunning experience. And to be in the Cooper when the sun goes down, you know how these sunsets are. Stunning.” Room service is low-key, provided by two of the station’s restaurants, delivered in to-go boxes. You can feed the scraps to Fido – The Crawford is dog friendly.

The hotel houses 112 rooms; no two are exactly alike. The Pullman rooms on the second floor are long and narrow, perhaps echoing a train car. The Classic rooms on the third floor are larger with ceilings that reach up 16-feet. The Loft rooms on the third floor are built in the station’s attic, suites that give the visitor the urban Lodo (Lower Downtown) loft experience down to the bare brick walls and exposed beams. Amenities include a mini iPad; Samsung 46-inch Smart HDTVs loaded with Netflix, Hulu, and Pandora; free WiFi. And Crawford oversaw every detail. “Yes, every detail, every step of the way,” she says. “The beds are unbelievably comfortable. Great sheets, the down pillows, great fabrics, the faucets. In a hotel, every detail is important. And the art.” The Crawford is bursting with more than 600 original pieces of art. A booklet describes the collection – which includes a
montage of found objects, a collection of items discovered under the station’s benches comprised of 1940’s celebrity trading cards, wallet photos and tokens. Within two blocks of Union Station are a plateful of Denver’s most popular restaurants, Jax Fish House, Venice, Squeaky Bean, Fogo de Chao, Morton’s, Wynkoop Brewing Company, Rodizio, Sullivan’s. And the best bar in the city, the Cruise Room in the Oxford Hotel, makes the martinis just one block east. It opened the day prohibition ended, Dec. 5, 1933, and it looks much the same today. The Oxford is the Crawford’s sister hotel and where you’ll be welcomed at the health club and day spa. Anything else? Oh yes. The Crawford’s town car is a Tesla Model S, about $100,000 worth of sleek black electric genius. It will silently whisk you to all of downtown Denver and its many pleasures, the theaters, the ballpark, the

Pepsi Center, and the emerging hot neighborhood, Lower Highlands. And if you’re in town for a checkup at National Jewish Health, the Tesla will get you there and back. But wait. Are the Crawford Hotel and the Grand Hall too nice? Is it too perfect and pleasing for a train station? “Oh no,” says Crawford. “It’s all so comfortable and inviting.” She recalls that a few days before, in the Grand Hall, she saw a server come and place a coaster under a visitor’s glass. Not something you see in every train station. Crawford seems especially proud of that simple act. “It demonstrates to everybody that we want to take care of this place.”

either fire nor floods could eradicate Union Station, which has served as an icon of lower downtown Denver for nearly 150 years. Built in 1881, Union Station was ravaged by fire in 1894 and quickly rebuilt, replacing wood with stone. In 1906 the famous Welcome Arch, known as Mizpah Arch, was erected in front of the building, but was dismantled in 1931 after being declared a traffic hazard. significant improvement and growth. Bridges connected the burgeoning areas and Union Station became the epicenter of the activity. Today the brand new Union Station is a masterpiece of creativity, accented by a unique boutique hotel and several great restaurants, bars and shops that are all-things Denver. The architecture alone is worth the visit, but the fabulous food, dining and nightlife make it all the more fun!

“The Great Hall is also a Great Experiment. We have upholstered velvet furniture and hand-woven rugs. Everyone who uses the space is simultaneously being accommodated, whether waiting for a train or bus, using it as a guest in the hotel lobby, having a business meeting, or enjoying it as a food hall or beer hall. This really is what Dana Crawford envisioned: Denver’s living room. It’s hip and it’s charming.” — Joe Vostrejs, Larimer Associates COO
The Great Hall is an impressive sight with its 65-foot ceilings, shops and restaurants and carefully cultivated collection of Western art.
Built in 1881, the original Union Station was devastated in 1894 when a fire ignited the electrical system in the ladies’ restroom.
“We held focus groups to see what the ideal mix of tenants would be at Union Station. We wanted the project to be Colorado-based and to showcase the building itself. It’s been wonderful to see the amount of traffic that has come in here. All the businesses here have exceeded expectations.” — Pat McHenry, Leasing and Acquisition Partner, Larimer Associates

I enjoyed a leisurely lunch on the patio of the Lion’s Peak Grill, one of the hotel’s four excellent dining options, and then spent a few minutes warming up on the driving range before Nick Bailey, director of golf, invited me onto the course. While the Rosewood CordeValle course can play up to 7,360 yards from the Black (pro) tees, I elected the member Green tees measuring 6,482, playing to
a par 72 with a slope rating of 131. There are additional teeing choices at Blue (6,810 yards), White (6,010 yards) and Red (5,325 yards). My caddie, Erik, who had caddied for the course architect on several occasions, made the round especially entertaining as he shared insights on the club’s rich history. “This is Mr. Jones’ favorite hole,” he remarked, as we approached the 13th tee. The scenery is captivating, making it more than a little difficult, at times, to focus on the next shot. The sixth hole especially presents a picturesque panorama; its fairway adjacent to the Clos Lachance Winery and its 150-acre vineyard. I was struck by the beautiful setting, which invokes the grape-covered hills of Tuscany. Resort guests are welcome to visit the winery for a closer look, tours, tastings, picnics — and even a game of bocce ball.
On the resort’s 2.3-mile hiking trail, fresh-air enthusiasts can experience the splendor of the surrounding natural areas and catch glimpses of wildlife. Other outdoor experiences include the tennis center, which features four Plexicushion tournament courts, and a pool centrally located behind the reception area. For those who prefer indoor activities, Rosewood CordeValle boasts a world-class Sense® Spa and top-notch fitness facility. An outstanding art collection is on display throughout the property, and a library off the main lobby provides a quiet, comfortable place to relax. Rosewood CordeValle’s intimate lodging options vary in size from 550 to 1,100 square feet and include 12 fairway rooms, 28 bungalows, and five villa suites. The 750-square-foot bungalows built high above the ninth fairway, for example, overlook sprawling meadowlands
and lush, tree-covered hills; these bungalows are just a few of Rosewood CordeValle’s private sanctuaries offering welcome respite from city life. Rosewood CordeValle also serves well as a home base from which to explore other acclaimed golf courses, including Pebble Beach Golf Links, Spyglass Hill Golf Course and Pasatiempo Golf Course. All are located within an hour’s drive of Rosewood CordeValle, which is 25 miles south of the San Jose airport, west of Highway 101, and 45 minutes north of the Monterey Peninsula. For both the adventurous golfer and those seeking peaceful solitude, I highly recommend Rosewood Cordevalle – it’s a perfect getaway and well worth the trip.

he year is 1998. He’s 37 years old, likely feeling the effects of being pummeled, beaten down and literally stomped on for nearly two decades. Yet when facing his greatest, most elusive challenge, the concept of giving up is not even a remote option. And that’s when this 37-year-old veteran of the game led his team to its firstever Super Bowl championship. In a city where sports rule, John Elway is king. The former Denver Broncos quarterback took his team to five Super Bowls – winning two – and later returned to help lead the Broncos from the sidelines as an executive with the organization. Among sports world superstars, Elway still reigns supreme as an individual who played with a lot of heart and passion, then carried those traits to his endeavors off the field. A graduate of Stanford University, Elway was a first pick in the 1983 NFL draft; he was then traded to the Broncos where he remained for his

16-year pro football career. Along the way he turned a so-so team into a championship one, eventually racking up back-toback Super Bowl victories in 1998 and 1999. He earned nine Pro Bowl selections and was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2004. And through it all, John Elway has never lost his passion for the team, nor his focus on the win. Today Elway serves as GM and executive vice president of football operations for the Denver Broncos, and it’s clear he is exactly where he should be at this time in his career. Whether throwing a pass on the field or watching the play from the side, Elway has earned a unique brand of respect that is both an inspiration and a constant reminder of the great player fans loved to watch during his remarkable career. As the Denver Broncos kick off their 2014-15 season, Denver Hotel Magazine spoke with Elway to learn a bit more about the man – on and off the field.
DHM: When you first moved here from California, did you think Denver would become your permanent home? ELWAY: I had never been to Denver before so I didn’t know a lot about it. I went to high school and college in California, so I really liked California. Not knowing how long I was going to be in Colorado I thought, especially early in my career, I would end up in California. But I played here for 16 years and had four kids, and by the time I retired from football they were all in school and embedded here in Colorado. So we stayed here and by that point in time I never thought about going back to California. So I have definitely turned into a Coloradoan and this will always be my home. DHM: What is your favorite thing to do in Colorado? ELWAY: I’m a golfer so obviously I play a lot of golf. I’ve always enjoyed getting up to Vail and spending time in the mountains, doing some hiking. It’s a way

for me to feel like I can really get away, and plus you’re in the mountains! One of the best secrets about Colorado is how nice the mountains are during the summertime. It’s neat to get up there. Obviously people think about skiing and don’t realize how nice the mountains are during the summertime. I’m not a skier so I enjoy them much more during the summer. DHM: Speaking of golf, do you believe great golfers have natural talent or is that something anyone can pick up without having athletic ability? ELWAY: I think you have to have athletic ability. There is a lot to it, hand-eye coordination and a lot of physical ability that has to go into golf, as well as the ability to compete. The mental side of a golf game is so great – there is a lot of mental toughness involved, and I think golf, like any other sport, takes a tremendous amount of physical talent as well as mental talent to be great, to be playing on the PGA tour.
DHM: Who is your sports hero? ELWAY: The guy who was my hero growing up was Roger Staubach who played for the Cowboys. He was a guy I respected and I liked his style of play, which ended up being a lot like the way I played. I also liked the way he was off the field. He’d been in the Navy and he was a success in the business world. He was a guy who provided a lot of inspiration for me both on and off the field.
ELWAY: I would say Ben Rothlisberger with the Steelers. He’s a guy who moves around quite a bit, makes a lot of plays with his legs and also does a good job and fields real well from the pocket.
DHM: Now let’s talk about ELWAY’S, your restaurant. What is your favorite dish? ELWAY: Before we started the restaurant I’d always loved a bone-in ribeye and wanted to have it on the menu. When we decided to do the restaurant the bone-in ribeye was the marquis item we wanted. Tyler, our chef, does a tremendous job and it’s a great piece of meat.
DHM: Do you think the present-day Broncos team is Super Bowl quality? ELWAY: I do think we have a chance. We made it there last year and got beat by The Seahawks, but I really believe going into (training) camp this year, if you look at us on paper, we’re more talented than last year. So I definitely think we have the ability to be world champions. There is a lot of work ahead of us and a lot of things we have to do. Things have to fall your way a little bit – you have to get a little bit lucky and you have to stay healthy, but if we can come together and gel we have the ability to make it.
DHM: Okay, now let’s talk some football. Which NFL player today reminds you most of yourself?
DHM: Do you think the present-day Broncos would have thrived in your era of football?

ELWAY’S at The Ritz Carlton Just in time for football, ELWAY’S steak house in The Ritz-Carlton has unveiled a spectacular renovation that is drawing rave reviews from tourists and locals. The downtown restaurant, co-owned by John Elway, is known for its comfortable, Colorado contemporary style, where the focal point is a large round table surrounded by a glass wine wall comprised of 1,584 bottles. Aspen-based design and architecture firm Rowland-Broughton was the creative force behind the recent renovation, which incorporates a stunning onyx stone wall that divides the restaurant from the bar. Also new is John’s Room, a great place for a group to gather, with views into the kitchen experienced through a private viewing window. There are four ELWAY’S restaurants in Colorado, including downtown Denver, Cherry Creek, Vail and in Denver International Airport.

ELWAY: I think so. I think with the talent we have on our team we would have been very competitive. I think the rules of the game have changed quite a bit. The offensives are a lot more open now than when I played. The rules have changed the game so that quarterbacks don’t get hit nearly as much as they used to, which is a good thing because it keeps them healthier and the great ones are able to play longer in the game because it’s not such a physical load on them. And the passing game is a lot more prevalent now. Even though we threw the ball quite a bit when I played, it’s just more reliant on quarterback play as well as a passing game. So I think we could have competed and I think defensively we’re physical enough that we could have competed with the teams back when I played. DHM: Has your perspective of professional football changed after seeing it from an executive position? ELWAY: No it hasn’t. I enjoy the
position I’m in. Unfortunately as a football player your career is going to end and you retire at a very young age compared to when most people retire. If you’re lucky you retire in your 30s, so my perspective is that I enjoy being a part of the game again, even though I can’t play and I can’t play quarterback. But I enjoy having the control and trying to put the puzzle together. As a quarterback you have all the control inside the lines and now in the position I’m in I have control of everything outside the lines and really no control inside the lines. So it’s a different perspective but I enjoy it and think I use a lot of what I learned in my playing days about being in the locker room, the type of guys I like playing with, the different personalities. There are so many different personalities on a 53-man roster and how to put those all together has definitely helped me. My dad was a football coach and ever since I can remember,
Eric Lars Bakke
Saturdays or Sundays in the Fall there was a scoreboard, and I’m glad to be a part of that again and to know how we did each week based on what’s on the scoreboard. DHM: What would you say has been the biggest challenge you have faced as a Broncos executive in the front office? ELWAY: When you’re in the entertainment business I think one of the things that is probably the most difficult is that you’re selling human beings. You’re selling players and their ability to play the game of football, so the entertainment side comes from how the players play and the coaches coach. Any time you have that many people, (I think we have more than 200 people in the organization not counting players), and managing that many personalities and egos is the biggest challenge in terms of trying to get everyone going and on the same page. To me that’s the greatest challenge and we’ve been fortunate here with
the Broncos to have such great people, which has made this a lot easier. But to me it’s always been the challenge of trying to get everyone going on the same page and to the point where everybody understands our goal, which is to be able to provide a competitive football team that can compete for world championships year in and year out. That’s hard to do and as I said, managing those egos and managing the personalities sometimes gets to be challenging, but I’ve been very fortunate here in the fact that I’ve worked with a lot of great people.
it didn’t come close to the first one because we’d been there four other times and had lost, and we were heavy underdogs against the Packers. We were 14-point underdogs and they were defending champions. Nobody really gave us much of a chance to win that game, so to be able to pull it out and win it and bring that world championship to Colorado was the best.
DHM: Favorite Broncos memory? ELWAY: My favorite memory was when we won Super Bowl XXXII. It was out in San Diego, and I kneeled down on the last play of the game. We had finally won a Super Bowl, the first Super Bowl for the Broncos and the first one for Colorado. That was definitely the highlight. We won the Super Bowl again the following year and that was very special, but

Fleetwood Mac has captivated the music world for decades with numerous hit songs. Now, for the first time since 1998, all five members of the band are hitting the road for a 33-city tour, including a stop in the Mile High City this December. Singer/songwriter and keyboardist Christine McVie will be rejoining bandmates Mick Fleetwood, John McVie, Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks as they launch their On With The Show Tour this fall. With McVie’s return, the group can resume playing songs that have been absent from their set list for nearly 20 years. As such, concertgoers can expect to hear “Little Lies,” “Everywhere,” “You Make Loving Fun” and other hits dependent on McVie’s vocals. Fleetwood Mac has sold more than 100 million albums worldwide – plus there are rumors of a new album in the works – so this concert is a must-see.

The rivalry between the Broncos and Chargers stretches back more than 50 years. The teams have met more than 100 times in that span, providing fans with everything from blowout victories and last-second comebacks to controversial calls and heated scuffles. During the 2013 season, the Broncos (13-3) and Chargers (9-7) split their regular-season matchups, but it was Peyton Manning and the Broncos that knocked the Chargers out of the playoffs with a 24-17 victory in Denver. This year’s contest promises to be an exciting one. Flip to Page 20 for our feature on the best sports bars in Denver.
Don’t miss the excitement as the Colorado State University and Air Force Academy football programs compete for the Ram-Falcon Trophy, part of a 30-year rivalry. Air Force leads the series 20-14, but CSU is riding the heels of a 58-13 victory over the Falcons in last year’s matchup. This will be the final regular-season competition for both teams, so expect an allout performance.
