LIVE A LIFE OF LUXURY AT DENVER’S MOST EXCLUSIVE ADDRESS LAUREL CHERRY CREEK – TAKING ELEGANCE TO NEW HEIGHTS High-end finishes and over-the-top packages set the standard for unparalleled lifestyle at Laurel, PAULS Corporation’s stunning new 12-story condominium in Denver’s highly coveted Cherry Creek neighborhood. Located right in the heart of Cherry Creek, the beautiful development is highlighted by limited edition residences, immaculate interiors, panoramic views, attended lobby and reception lounge, rooftop retreat with saltwater pool and summer kitchen, and personalized resident services. “We have designed and built Laurel Cherry Creek to be the preeminent residential address in Cherry Creek, where owners will enjoy upscale, maintenance-free living in one of the most sought-after neighborhoods in the United States,” according to PAULS Corporation President Paul Powers. Built by Haselden Construction, architectural firm JNS and the acclaimed interior design team of Kimberly Timmons Interiors, Laurel Cherry Creek blends seamlessly into the neighborhood’s fabric – incorporating materials, structures, scaling and details that encompass the area. “Our goal is to ensure that our buildings have a lasting, positive impact on the community,” Powers says. Units range in size from 934 square feet to 4,761 square feet, and offer a luxury, hotel-inspired experience for year-round living. The development is in high-demand and sales efforts are outpacing construction. High Tea

A British Tradition Thrives in Colorado

There are few hours in life more agreeable than the hour dedicated to the ceremony known as afternoon tea. — Henry James, The Portrait of a Lady

By Melanie Locke

H

ome to a thriving brewery community, an up-and-coming winery culture, busy coffee shops on every corner, and restaurants and eateries galore, there’s no shortage of food or drink in Denver. In such a bustling culinary city, it can be hard to escape the hubbub. Luckily, a traditional English custom has taken root in Denver with a variety of afternoon tea locales that provide visitors with a welcome change of pace. Afternoon tea began in Great Britain in the 18th Century. The practice was a social event among the higher classes and provided repast before an evening full of entertainment. As the British Empire expanded around the world, so too did the practice of a light mid-afternoon meal. In Denver, afternoon tea is an enjoyable experience for anyone interested in the tradition or an afternoon of relaxation. With teahouses inspired by and connected to Asian culture, catering to the traditional English tea, and with a modern twist, there’s an option for everyone. Both tea newcomers and aficionados will enjoy an afternoon of tea and treats at these featured teahouses. 20

Boulder Dushanbe Tea House 1770 13th Street, Boulder, CO Located in the heart of Boulder, the Boulder Dushanbe Tea House is an architectural work of art with an equally stunning story behind its creation. Considered a sister city to Dushanbe, Tajikistan, in 1987 Boulder was gifted a teahouse created in the traditional style. It took three years for the intricately created decorative elements of the teahouse to be finished by hand without the use of any power tools. Like its rich and meaningful construction, the Boulder Dushanbe Tea House embodies the culture of Central Asia, which values teahouses as places of community and gathering. The ornate beauty of the teahouse draws the eye and entices visitors and locals alike to join in the shared culture of Boulder’s sister city in Tajikistan. Today the Boulder Dushanbe Tea House is a Boulder institution. Located only a few blocks from the famous Pearl Street Walking Mall, the Tea House offers breakfast, lunch, dinner and teatime selections. Visitors enjoy meals inspired by Asian and American culture and an extensive drink selection. Stop by for Afternoon Tea, served in the traditional English style with a beautifully dressed table, a three-tiered tower of pastries, sandwiches and cakes, and a steaming pot of premium tea.

The Brown Palace Hotel 321 17th St, Denver, CO The Brown Palace Hotel is an historic luxury establishment located in the heart of downtown Denver. Since 1892, the hotel has been a beloved Denver institution famous for its elegant design and amenities. Originally catering to visitors flocking west in search of gold and silver, with rooms available at four dollars a night, the Brown Palace Hotel is a prominent feature in Denver’s history. Today the Brown Palace is an iconic landmark that caters to modern visitors looking for comfortable and opulent lodgings. Afternoon tea at the Brown Palace is a lavish affair with a selection of herbal teas, finger sandwiches, and scones. Enjoy Devonshire cream imported from England along with your tasty treats. While the tea service is exceptional, the true experience of afternoon tea comes from the surroundings. The Brown Palace seamlessly blends historical grandeur with modern comfort. Admire the architectural details designed by Frank E. Edbrooke, who designed many other landmark buildings throughout the city, while enjoying the melodic effects of a professional pianist or harpist. For an indulgent and sumptuous experience taking tea, there’s no better choice than the Brown.

Bella’s Teapot 6851 S Gaylord St, #242, Centennial, CO With tea and china from across the world, Bella’s Teapot in south Denver is a bright, airy and modern afternoon escape. Afternoon tea includes a light salad, tea sandwiches and a selection of homemade pastries, along with a wide variety of teas. Bella’s Teapot offers teas that are Ethical Tea Partnership-certified and include black, herbal, oolong, white and fruit-fusion options. Bella’s Teapot is an ideal afternoon getaway for visitors new to the tea culture. With a modern, welcoming design and delicious food prepared fresh in-house, even coffee-lovers will feel at home at Bella’s Teapot.

House of Commons 2401 15th Street, Denver, CO If you’re looking for a proper English tea, look no further. House of Commons, located in the bustling LoDo neighborhood, opened in 2005 as a reminder of home for Lancashire, England-raised owner Jessica. The Story of

An Urban Marketplace Takes Flight in Aurora By Monica Parpal Stockbridge

few local business owners began asking if he would be interested in leasing space inside. Shaker was intrigued. What if he and his partners could transform the deserted building into a place where multiple businesses operated under one roof? Where, instead of solely a beer hall, the building would house an urban marketplace — that time-honored yet trending concept of multiple businesses running in one location? What if people could come for a beer, but also for a cup of coffee, a new pair of shoes, an afternoon yoga class, and imported Italian pasta for dinner, all without leaving the building? This is how the story of Stanley Marketplace took flight.

From the Hip Photo

n 2014, Mark Shaker wanted to open a beer hall. He wasn’t looking for anything big; just a cozy place in his Stapleton neighborhood, where friends, family and neighbors could hang out and enjoy each other’s company. When he first came across the former Stanley Aviation building in northwest Aurora, on the border of Denver’s Stapleton, Shaker was unconvinced. The 140,000-square-foot warehouse and former aviation equipment plant had stood vacant for nearly a decade, and its 22-acre expanse was far too large for the beer garden he had originally envisioned. Yet, word started to float around that Shaker was looking at the expansive space, and a

Prepare for Takeoff Built in 1954, Stanley Aviation was once the largest employer in Aurora, Colorado. Originally from Buffalo, New York, Bob Stanley is credited with being the first American to fly a jet plane, as well as an innovative designer of life-saving airplane ejector seats in his eponymous Aurora warehouse. The warehouse still bears red-painted pathways on the floors inside, which indicated safe places to walk amid dangerous machinery, as well as original neon signage on the front. “We knew from the very beginning that this was a special building where interesting things had happened,” says Bryant Palmer, Chief Storyteller with Stanley Marketplace. “The more we learned about Stanley Aviation, the more we felt inspired by those stories.” The more he learned about the history of the space, Shaker felt moved by the building and its past identity, and he and his partners ultimately took ownership in August of 2014. Soon after, he and Palmer (who happen to be brothers-in-law) wrote the “Stanifesto,” a guiding document containing a series of “grand ambitions” and “mighty beliefs,” not the least of which is this: “We believe in bringing people together and making them happy.”

Now Boarding costs proved challenging, and in the Stanley spirit of innovation, Shaker devised his own cost-saving plan he coined “the Uncle Vinny program.” “Everyone has an ‘Uncle Vinny’ who’s a construction worker, or plumber, or millworker,” he says. “We created our own construction crew of friends and acquaintances launching their own construction, plumbing, or millworking business who helped build the majority of these spaces while simultaneously building their own portfolios.” Over time, Stanley signed on more and more businesses whose owners identified with the types of collaborative ownership Shaker and Palmer were seeking. After all, part of making the massive space feel cohesive was the conscious plan to bring in a collection of businesses who were interested in working together. “Our biggest goal was to team up with fantastic operators who were passionate about what they did and who were community-minded, who wanted to be in a place where businesses work together.” That’s not for everyone, Palmer acknowledges. “We wanted to make sure we were finding people who wanted to do this crazy, collaborative project that broke a lot of the rules.” Today, Stanley houses more than 50 businesses — and there’s still room to grow.

Even before construction began, bringing the space back to life was anything but straightforward. Palmer and Shaker organized events on the Stanley property when it was still a construction site, getting the word out about their plans by partnering with Denver festival organizers like the Cherry Creek Arts Festival and TheBigWonderful. “We hosted tons of events to make sure people knew we were here,” Palmer says. Through this outreach, they met some of their vendors, including Zero Market and Goose & the Goat Shoes, who now have permanent spots within the building. Other early partners included established businesses like Kindness Yoga and OPENair Academy preschool, as well as Cheluna Brewing Company, who launched their brewery inside Stanley Marketplace. “The industrial feel of the Stanley Aviation building was very appealing to us,” says Cheluna owner Jennifer Pérez. “The building owners got to know us over time, loved our beer and concept, and Cheluna was realized.” The first businesses opened their doors in December of 2016, and from there new vendors opened almost every week, with custom-designed spaces by independent architects. However, skyrocketing construction

Since opening, Stanley has welcomed a wide variety of Colorado-born businesses, including several restaurants, a variety of retail shops, a liquor store, a yoga studio, a preschool, and even a dentist, to name a few. Shaker’s vision for a beer hall took flight in the form of Stanley Beer Hall, and The Hangar — where Bob Stanley used to keep his planes — now operates as an events venue for proms, graduations, pop-up festivals, live music and more. One of the most exciting aspects for Shaker is to see tenants collaborating, bringing to life the spirit of innovation Bob Stanley launched more than 60 years ago. For example, Cheluna Brewing partners with chocolatier Miette et Chocolate who toasts up to 30 pounds of bakers’ chocolate for Cheluna’s Coco Xoxo Porter. Then, Sweet Cow ice cream uses that beer to make ice cream,

while Annette restaurant — recently lauded in Bon Appétit — reduces the same beer to create a syrup for one of their desserts. Collaborations like these are so common, it’s no wonder that many of the vendors have begun to see one another as family. “We have cultivated relationships with everyone involved from day one, from the city to the owners and construction and cleaning crews, and have come to think of many of the people we know through Stanley as extended family, including our employees and those of other Stanley businesses.” Pérez says. “There’s something special about working directly with the business owners who have put their whole soul and passion into their product,” Shaker adds. “It’s evident that they care so much about those details, from how they design their space to the passion they have for their craft.”

Off to a Flying Start

Flying High As 2017 comes to a close, Stanley is thriving with more than 50 businesses that offer something for everyone. Some people come in the morning for a yoga class at Kindness Yoga, and coffee on the sunny Logan House Coffee Company patio. They may stay for lunch at Rosenberg’s Bagels or Sazza Pizza before learning to build a robot at MindCraft or getting a manicure at Basecoat, followed by a pint at Stanley Beer Hall or a glass of wine at Infinite Monkey Theorem. “We’ve had an enormous amount of support from fellow Stanley business owners,” says Nicki McTague of Infinite Monkey Theorem. “We’ve collaborated on numerous occasions and seen a growth in sales thanks to a lot of cross-promotional opportunities. We’ve also seen new customers frequent our Stanley taproom, and it’s exciting to see people who have never heard of the brand become regulars.” Now approaching its official one-year anniversary, it’s safe to say that people know where Stanley Marketplace is. By the end of the year, the space will be 100-percent occupied. The surrounding area is evolving, too. By the end of 2018, 190 micro-apartments will be constructed within a minute’s walk of the Stanley Marketplace front door.

Although Stanley is nearing capacity, it is an ever-evolving project that is far from finished. In fact, part of the fun is that you never know what might happen there. A brass band might march through the marketplace one afternoon, or you might catch a Bollywood flash mob spring to action in the foyer. The Denver Center for Performing Arts’ Off-Center theatre company produced an immersive theater musical there in October. “We love surprises like that, because it adds an element of delight to an ordinary day,” Palmer says. “We’d like there to be as much delight in the world as possible.” At its heart, Stanley is a reflection of its past and a runway toward the future. It’s become a cool hangout, and just like Shaker hoped, it’s proudly Aurora. Stanley is a place where old stories live on, and where the floors still bear ribbons of red paint indicating where people walked before us. Today, Stanley invites you to walk those paths, to relive the old stories — and then, to step beyond them and be a part of creating the new ones.

The Mile High United Way Turkey Trot has been bringing runners to historic Washington Park for more than 40 years. While grownups can tackle the four-mile run, little (turkey) legs can run the quarter-mile fun run before enjoying post-race entertainment. www.unitedwaydenver.org/turkey-trot When LoHi standard Rosa Linda’s closed after 30 years, The Squeaky Bean took up the annual tradition of feeding area homeless and hungry at Thanksgiving. The Squeaky Bean, Warren Tech, We Don’t Waste and Denver’s Community teamed up the past two years to continue the event. Today, the Thanksgiving Feed event continues with the support of Warren Tech Central, North and its satellite programs, DHA and Denver’s community. Last year, they fed more than 6,000 of Denver’s hungry. The whole event runs on the generosity of volunteers and donations; to participate, email tsbfeed@gmail.com; to donate contact acreswarrentech.com. Downtown Denver’s Winter in the City program kicks off the day after Thanksgiving with the Grand Illumination, so after you’ve finished bargain hunting on Black Friday, head downtown to the City & County Building. Christmas Starting November 17th, Denver’s Skyline Park is transformed into a European-style holiday market, with vendors from Ukraine, Ireland, Germany and other countries — not to mention local artisans — selling high-quality, handmade gifts. The Denver Christkindl Market features hand-carved wooden figurines, hand-made candles and ornaments, along with German food, Glühwein (hot mulled wine), live German music and traditional carols. www.denverchristkindlmarket.com The town of Golden, nestled in the foothills outside of Denver, transforms itself into the ultimate place to celebrate Christmas, western style. Kicking off with the Candlelight Walk on December 1, a procession of thousands of people will walk, holding candles, down Washington Street, illuminating each block with lights as they go. Afterward, find everything from roasted chestnuts to hot cider and Santa Claus. The following day, December 2nd, along with December 9th and 16th, Golden hosts its popular Olde Golden Christmas Parades, filling the town’s historic downtown with traditional decorations and fun 30

activities for the whole family. The parade features cowboys on horses, floats, marching bands, classic cars, elves on unicycles, the Grinch in a Corvette, and of course, Santa Claus. Following the parade, enjoy free horse-drawn carriage rides. Since 1956, Cascade, Colorado — just minutes outside of Colorado Springs — has been home to the North Pole and Santa’s Workshop, a charming Christmas-centric village. At this North Pole, the ice never melts, and visitors can explore the wares in several shops, experience 25 rides and attractions, see magic shows, listen to music, and of course, visit Mr. Claus himself. www.northpolecolorado.com

For an unforgettable ice skating experience, head to Evergreen Lake, the world’s largest groomed outdoor ice rink. Nestled among the pine trees of the foothills, you can skate the day away before sitting in front of a roaring fire in the stone fireplace, sipping hot cocoa. www. evergreenrecreation.com Nothing is more in the holiday spirit than festive gingerbread houses, and at Stir It Up Cooking School, families can create candy sidewalks, ice cream cone trees, and gumdrop-lined rooftops on their own houses at one of their popular gingerbread house workshops. www.stiritupcooking.com

Paying Homage to The Roaring ’20s

Denver Speakeasies are an Intoxicating Adventure By Eric Elkins

W

hat is a speakeasy, really? Back during prohibition, a super-secret entrance was a necessity when it came to serving up illegal booze under the radar. But now? Slipping through a sham facade to get into a dimly lit cocktail bar is more a matter of storytelling than hiding out from the feds. Still, surrendering to the spell of a well-crafted tale can be its own special pleasure. Especially when you’re soaking up spirits by the glassful. Denver is replete with speakeasy cocktail bars, from the throwback feel of Williams & Graham to the decidedly modern style of Retrograde. What they all have in common, though, is a meticulous approach to every aspect of the customer experience — from the way you get through the door, to the sources of ingredients and spirits, to the overall vibe of the room.

32

denver + colorado

The granddaddy of them all is Green Russell, part of chef Frank Bonnano’s empire of chef-driven restaurants. You might miss the entrance if you’re not looking for it as you stroll along Larimer Square’s many options for bites and beverages. Follow the signs down the stairs to Wednesday’s Pie (three kinds daily), a legit storefront that leads into the subterranean bar itself. And though it may be a tad fussy in its “house rules” – standing at the bar is prohibited and use of your cellphone for a call is an ejectable offense — the array of botanicals, fresh herbs, and unique, handmade bitters and sodas is truly impressive. Sure, you could select a cocktail from the menu, but if you really want to try something different, give your bartender the flavor profiles you’re craving (Base spirit? Sweet or spicy? Spirit forward, or not so much?) and let him or her concoct something special just for you. For the full-on, prohibition-style, speakeasy experience, make your way over to the LoHi neighborhood for a visit to Williams & Graham, nominated as Best American Bar at the Spirited Awards several years in a row. What looks like a corner bookstore (do they make those anymore?) is actually an essential stop on any Denver drinking adventure. If you can’t get a reservation, your best bet is to arrive a little before opening and stand in line. Behind a swing-out bookcase, you’ll find a novel-length cocktail menu broken down by spirit preference. But the seasonal specials are where you’ll want to kill some brain cells. And don’t forget to dig into the small plates and desserts created by the talented Chef Matthew Thompson.

Insider tip: The lookout booth is the best spot in the house. From there, you can watch the stellar bartenders at work while taking in the comings and goings of Denver’s cocktail lovers. Interested in the speakeasy experience but not so excited about the mustache and suspender crowd? Retrograde in Uptown may be more your thing. You’ll wonder if you’re in the right spot when you enter the brightly lit Frozen Matter ice cream shop, with its inventive flavors and homemade sodas. But don’t be fooled; that stainless-steel walk-in freezer door opens to a cozy Willy Wonka-esque bar that’s cool in all the right ways. I’m particularly fond of the Fox Mulder cocktail, but you’ll find your own rocket to outer space on the sci-fi-inspired menu. Millers & Rossi is another speakeasy with a contemporary feel. The front room is a spacious art gallery with an eclectic rotation of modern works, but walk through the door at the back, and you’ll find yourself in a warmly lit den that almost feels like a friend’s living room (if that pal were partial to Edison bulbs and a wraparound bar). The cocktails range from updated classics (Smoked Old Fashioned, anyone?) to locally sourced creations. The bar is a bit out of the way, so maybe stop in for a drink or two before walking a couple blocks to Hop Alley for dinner, then make a night of it and visit RiNo Art District’s many hip joints and art galleries along Larimer Street. denver + colorado

33

Eric’s Best Bets Though the speakeasies change up their menus often, most of them have a set of signature cocktails. Here are some favorites to try: Green Russell: Barrel Aged Blend The concoction changes regularly, but whatever’s been aged is going to have a mellow, oaky flavor to complement the spirits inside. Always a winner. Williams & Graham: Blackberry Sage Smash Sweet and herby, with a hint of lemon. It tastes fresh and delicious, like an afternoon hike in the foothills. Retrograde: Fox Mulder It’s not actually on the menu anymore, but the bartenders will make it for you if you ask nicely. With two kinds of whiskey, chocolate bitters, and Yellow Chartreuse, you, too, will want to believe. Millers & Rossi: The Wakeup Call A whiskey-based cocktail with the bite of Byrrh, but what makes the drink special is the espresso and custom chocolate sourced from Hotbox Roasters and Temper Chocolates, just a few blocks away. B&GC: Suit Separates An unexpected pleasure, with Suntory Whiskey and Plymouth Sloe Gin, all warmed up with sherry and pineapple gum syrup. Try not to guzzle it down. Ste. Ellie: The Loneliest Monk Rye, Yellow Chartreuse, Underberg bitters, and one giant rock. My favorite bittersweet comfort cocktail always makes me feel a little less lonely. Union Lodge #1: Red White Blue Blazer The fiery floor show is just the beginning.

34

denver + colorado

Sometimes a speakeasy is less about the secret entrance and more about how you find it in the first place. B&GC in Cherry Creek North is a gem, hidden away in the bowels of the Halcyon hotel. Text (don’t call) 720.925.8598 for a reservation, and you’ll be directed to ring the bronze bell outside an alley door. A host will lead you down a stairwell, past HVAC equipment, and along a hallway to the intimate room, which is well-equipped with some of the most adept bartenders in the whole damn city. The cocktail menu is eclectic, and you’ll be enchanted by the array of potions along the top of the bar. What’s the line between a speakeasy and one that elicits the style and experience of one? The elegant Ste. Ellie doesn’t have a secret entrance or a storefront façade. And though the frosted glass door to the bar on Platte Street is understated, it certainly isn’t hidden. But descend the stairs to the sister bar and restaurant underneath big brother Colt & Gray, and you’ll find one of the loveliest rooms anywhere. Whether you settle into a cushy round booth or post up at the gorgeous marble bar, the Ellie’s friendly staff will set you up with some of the best food and drink you’ll find in Denver. Choose from the dynamic cocktail menu, or request a bartender to do up something unique. Ask Minetta to make you one of her signature tiki-inspired cocktails in a fish-shaped vessel, if you’re feeling especially courageous. The food menu is affordable and delectable, too, and the kitchen is open until 1 a.m. Don’t miss the signature sticky toffee pudding for dessert.

A REST and RECOVERY Wellness Studio

relax recover Is Union Lodge No. 1 a speakeasy? Not strictly, no. Set in a storefront on Champa Street downtown, there’s nothing hidden about the place. But step inside, and the vibe is pure vintage, from the 19th century pre-prohibition cocktails to the old-timey attire (and attention to detail and customer service) of the staff. Co-owned by Williams & Graham alum and award-winning bartender Jason Patz, Union Lodge has everything you’d want in a speakeasy experience. The intimate room is warm, the bartenders are ridiculously friendly, and you can even order a drink they’ll set on fire. Whichever speakeasies you choose to visit, embrace the romance of the experience. Chat with your servers and bartenders and learn what their favorites are. Let them know your tastes and preferences so they can steer you to something new and delicious. And always, always tip well.

The Sound of Music Musicians On Call Delivers Joy to Patients

is the season for caroling and gifts, toasting friends and family and reflecting on seasons gone by. For Musicians On Call (MOC) however, every day is dedicated to spreading cheer through song. Their mission: to bring life on the wings of music to patients hospitalized with severe injuries and illness. MOC efforts are experienced by patients, doctors and nurses, as well as the volunteers who drive much of the organization’s operation. Ryan Flick, a volunteer musician says, “MOC has allowed me the opportunity to serve others while doing something I love to do. I get excited about the connection I can make. Sometimes patients sing along, sometimes they clap, sometimes they ask to sing some36

thing back to me! Music is healing, even if it just brings a smile to someone’s day. I get to see smiles a lot when I play at the hospital and the relief that comes with it.” Volunteer Jenny Salimi adds, “Being part of MOC has been one of the most humbling yet rewarding experiences. It’s an absolute honor to be able to volunteer with such an extraordinary organization.” I sat down with MOC President Pete Griffin to gain a better understanding of the work they do in Denver at Children’s Hospital of Colorado. There are many ways for the community to get involved both locally and nationwide. Read on to learn how you can give the gift of music to someone in desperate need, this season and in the coming year.

Colorado Hotel Magazine: Can you briefly describe how you network hospitals and patients with music? Pete Griffin: “We started in 1999 in New York, in one hospital. Co-founder Michael Solomon’s girlfriend was diagnosed with sarcoma and ended up passing away. She was 23 years old and her name was Kristen Ann Carr. Her mother worked in the music industry so they thought, why don’t we do something nice for the hospital. They brought musicians in to play in the lobby and the patients would come down and listen and take a little break from the day. After doing that a couple of times, they realized there were a lot of patients like Kristen Ann, who weren’t able to leave their rooms. So, in many ways, the people who needed it the most couldn’t take advantage of the music. Michael and Kristen’s mother wondered, why don’t we bring the musicians around from room to room, to play for patients who can’t leave their room? And that’s the idea that started Musicians On Call.” Essentially what we do to this day is, we find musicians in cities around the country and schedule them to go to hospitals on a weekly basis. They go room to room to play for the patients who really need it the most, the ones who are stuck in their beds.”

Rick Diamond / 2015 Getty Images

CHM: MOC celebrated 18 years of service this year to patients and hospitals. How long have you been servicing the Denver area? PG: We started in Denver in 2015, so it is pretty recent. We have already played for over 2,100 people in Denver in that short time. We’re excited to be there, but we’re also looking forward to growing and serving more folks there. CHM: How often are music events scheduled in hospitals across the country? PG: We aspire to be in the hospitals every week. We’ll work with the hospital and they will determine what day and time works best for them. Then they determine what areas of the hospital make the most sense for us to go in, because every hospital has patients organized in a different way. We bring musicians each week to visit the hospitals. We rely largely on local, professional musicians who have been screened by us and trained by us. We also work with a lot of celebrity musicians. Whenever there is an opportunity, we schedule them to do visits as well.

CHM: How can the local community get involved and help spread the love for MOC? PG: There are two basic ways. One is to volunteer with us, because we still need volunteers. You can go to musiciansoncall.org/volunteer to get things going. The cool part about what we do is we have opportunities for both musicians and non-musicians to volunteer with us. When we go into the hospital we have what we call Volunteer Guides, people who learn the ropes of the hospital and then take the musicians room to room. Then of course you’ve got the musicians. So, we have opportunities for both sets of people. The other way people can support us is to donate. We’ve got a small staff, there are just 14 of us running this program in 26 cities across the country. Our ability to serve more patients largely comes from folks donating, so we can hire more program staff to serve more people.

CHM: What is your story? How did you first get involved with MOC? PG: I came here through a meandering path, if you will. I spent about nine years of my career at MTV. When I was there, I worked in advertising and international marketing before transitioning over to manage all MTV’s social cause work. I did all the things you would see on air, from covering politics, to different cause-related issues. I worked with the MTV talent and musicians and bands and the causes that were important to them and were important to our audience. After doing that for a few years, I realized I really wanted to dedicate my life to it. A couple of the artists I had worked with had spoken about being involved with MOC. In fact, the artist who helped us kick off our program in Denver was Gavin DeGraw. I’ve known him for a long time and he was one of the artists who told me about his experience with MOC, which is how I found out about it. denver + colorado

37

CHM: Since serving as President of MOC, how has the organization and its mission impacted you personally? PG: It’s been amazing! I go to the hospital a lot to bring people and to see the program in action. I’m actually a Volunteer Guide at the Nashville VA Hospital. Two things really stick out to me. One is that it’s easy to understand what we do, but when you get in the room and see the power that music actually has ... you go in a room and see someone who’s not really moving, not really talking and clearly having a bad day. Then a volunteer musician plays for them and three minutes later, they are sitting up in bed, smiling, laughing and singing along. You know that for a few minutes you’ve brought them joy, you’ve allowed them to disconnect from where they’re at. When you see that, you just want to keep doing more and more of it. The other thing I see is that a lot of family members, or patients themselves, come up to me and express how knowing there are people willing to volunteer and take time out of their lives to visit when patients are going through a tough time really means the most. So there’s that humanity piece that really makes me grateful for all our volunteers who are able to create that human-to-human connection. That really helps people. 38

denver + colorado

CHM: What have been some of the greatest challenges? PG: One of the things we’re working on right now is building out technology so hospitals and volunteers can go through an online onboarding process themselves. This will enable us to use technology to get folks onboard and connect them, so that we can truly make MOC available in hospitals and communities across the country. That’s the big initiative we are starting. Obviously these things cost money. We’re a small organization. We spend a lot of time focusing on local communities, sharing the story about what we do in the hope people want to support us so we can build out more programs and build in some technology that allows us to connect people. It really doesn’t cost much for us to do this because we’re so efficient. Just a little more of a boost in fundraising and we’re going to be able to scale quickly. CHM: With the holiday season approaching, in an ideal world, what is on MOC’s wish list? PG: We would love people to sponsor a hospital room. We have a program called, ‘The Backstage Pass’ program. Basically, for us to bring music to a room every week for a year costs $500. If someone was able to donate $500 toward a room, or if they wanted to start their own online fundraiser to raise $500, that would allow us to bring music to a room, every week for a year. When you do that, we give you a commemorative Backstage Pass, which essentially connects you to the patients whom you’re ultimately sponsoring that year.

CHM: What is one of the most compelling memories for you to date of how MOC has made a difference in a patient’s life? PG: This is a little bit generic but it has happened so many times, it’s probably worth sharing. We’re in children’s hospitals all over the country, including The Children’s Hospital of Colorado. This actually happened when I was in Denver with Gavin DeGraw. We were going room to room and playing for people and we went into the room of a child who was being treated for cancer. She had been in the hospital for a couple of weeks. The child, as you might expect, wasn’t very happy at the beginning. Gavin played a song and by the end they were clapping, singing and having a good time. Her mom and dad came out into the hallway after we had left and grabbed me. They said after being there for three weeks, that was the first time they had seen their daughter smile. It’s in moments like that, you know you help the patient and the family, and it just changes you. You become even more motivated to try to replicate that emotion for other people and that’s what we’re trying to do. That was just one patient, but we’re trying to do that in Colorado and across the country. It’s really a powerful thing!” To donate, volunteer or find out more about Musicians On Call visit: https://www. musiciansoncall.org/

Glamour and Style Return to the Slopes This Season By Ellen Gray

L

uxury is the operative word on the slopes this winter. Fashion-forward skiers will no doubt thrill to see the return of glamour, sophistication and high style, as skiwear takes a bow to both designer street looks and technical function. Gone are the days when baggy pants and long jackets, often a staple of snowboard enthusiasts, ruled the slopes. Replacing the look are form-fitting jackets, adorned with fur, metallic finishes and jewel tones, paired with functional stretch pants first introduced by Bogner in the 1950s. In fact, when it comes to luxury, skiwear designers such as Bogner, Toni Sailer and Skea rule the day, with beautiful collections that are as eye-catching as they are versatile. ML Furs, a highly respected boutique in Denver’s chic Cherry Creek North, is the exclusive purveyor of the Bogner brand. The marriage of the upscale boutique with the industry’s most-respected skiwear designer is indeed a match made in heaven. As you head to one of Colorado’s fabulous resorts this winter, you’ll want to tackle the slopes in style, and the season’s beautiful collection will show off your moves both on and off the slopes. 40

Many of the pieces that will mark the slopes this season feature elements of fur. According to ML Furs, expect to see runway on the slopes, and Bogner’s Fire + Ice collection is a prime example. Drawing inspiration from motor racing sports and the iconic style of Steve McQueen, the designs are incredibly intricate, using materials and threads that can take as long as 30 hours to assemble. The Fire + Ice line is pure street style, and highlights why the Bogner name remains the uncontested leader in ski fashion. “Bogner Sport, the most sought-after ski brand worldwide, not only combines fashion and function, each piece is a work of art, a collector’s item, from the illustrious one-pieces, jackets and helmets, to the transitional mid and base layers that can be worn all year while hiking, biking or even golfing. Their brand boasts an aura of exclusivity,” according to Ms. Gross of ML Furs. Sleek fit rules the day, and established designers bring color and glamour to the season. Sophisticated skiwear transitions easily from slopestyle to après ski, with colors and fabrics that meld perfectly with runway fashion. In addition to a beautiful collection featuring contemporary styling, fabrics and design, skiing legend Toni Sailer is showcasing a smaller, limited line inspired by the “black blitz from Kitz,” a predominantly black collection that features luxurious materials including leather, lambskin and fur. Kitzbüehl, Austria being one of the most famous, demanding downhill’s in the world, often boasting the Men’s World Cup. Toni Sailer’s elegant women’s collection is both athletic and versatile, featuring four-way stretch material with a shiny, satin finish. Emphasizing femininity, the outfits showcase an elegant, athletic silhouette, including a stunning jumpsuit incorporating a blouson jacket. Bogner, long recognized as the fashion leader in beautiful skiwear, once again delivers a fabulous lineup, with great looks that incorporate modern and biker black-and-whites, navy/denim and red-white-and-blue patriotic themes for the 2018 Olympic Games. Also big this year are eclectic metallics with gold and violet ash straight from the runway, bright pinks and darker mocha tones. Much of the Bogner Women’s line draws inspiration from the urban cowboy trend, merging the Bogner heritage of traditional ski and active sportswear in a relaxed and comfortable style.

Skea, another Colorado favorite, pushes the limits of function and style in this season’s collection featuring technical fabrics, customized trims, gorgeous prints and fashionable silhouettes. Skea designer and owner Diane Boyer, a Vail, Colorado resident and former freestyle skiing champion, understands what it takes to combine performance and high style. The designer’s line appeals to women of all ages, and the clothing works equally well in the big city or on the slopes of Vail. This season’s lineup features fun colors and textures, reflective and shiny touches, and even sequins 44

on both base and mid layers. Look for beautiful accessories to complement the ensemble. Of course, looking hot on the slopes is not just a woman’s prerogative. Highend designers pay homage to men, with high-tech fabrics, exquisite workmanship and sporty styles. Toni Sailer’s limited Montgomery jacket is a work of art, featuring details from hydrophobic reindeer nubuck, carbon zippers and lasered carbon logos. Add a hood, lined with Tuscan lambskin, and lightweight yet ultra-warm Francis ski pants, and this is a standout on the mountain.

Just Fur Fun

At the end of an epic ski day, there’s an art to looking great when you come off the slopes. There are so many options, so we’ve narrowed down the field to help you select what to wear, whether on a ski holiday in the mountains or elsewhere in Colorado. To help us develop a template for winter après ski fashion, we turned to the experts at ML Furs, who have helped visitors from across the globe to look their cold-weather best. The family-owned business works with national and international brands, and prides itself on remaining current and contemporary. A keen sense of understanding their customers and what they need is key to the company’s success since its humble beginnings in 1987. With a finger on the pulse of runway fashion, ML Furs caters to modern women who desire high-end outerwear or skiwear for the coming season. This season, the boutique is awash in beautiful style, including stunning fur, vivid color, denim, navy and metallic. Forget the image of your grandmother’s fur coat, and look to celebrities and fashion models who more and more are incorporating elements of fur into their everyday wardrobe. Whether the goal is function or fashion – or a combination of the two, elements of fur are everywhere, and are being produced in highly regulated operations worldwide. The furs of today are very lightweight, and in many instances, are so highly styled that it takes a closer look to understand they are indeed the real deal. A huge seller at ML Furs is a reversible, easy-to-wear coat that is fur on one side and water-repellent taffeta or silk on the other. The coat can be worn with pants or a dress, and is the epitome of style and function. So just who is buying these pieces? “If you think back to the days when Sex and the City was on television, you’ll recall that fur was front and center in every episode. They all wore fur, and it was considered the height of fashion,” Ms. Gross of ML Furs says. “Today it’s less about luxury and more about everyday style.” The fur industry is a huge employer around the world, from Africa to Scandinavia and China. The industry employs millions of workers, and is a $15 billion industry worldwide. The U.S. fur industry represents about 10 percent of that number, so imports are a major factor in the business. The majority of skins are sourced in the United States, Denmark, Finland and Russia, all from places that are 100-percent regulated and monitored. “This industry is better regulated than any other,” Mr. Gross says. “You’re not going to find any leopard, or any endangered species. If they’re on the endangered or protected list, they are protected.” When it comes to this type of apparel, each piece is a true work of art, from the dyeing process to matching up each piece for color and design. The pieces are put together by artisans, and represent hours of work and expertise. This season, designers closely follow the rest of the fashion world, featuring monochromatic jewel tones, muted earth tone palettes from Michael Kors, modern classics from Zac Posen, textures, color, camo, navy, horizontals, reversible, lightweight garments including sweatshirts, hoodies, ponchos, and sheared designs. With options such as these it’s impossible not to look good. “If you aren’t a skier, we show you how to look good off-piste in some of our longer down garments with fur trim from Bogner, M. Miller and Guy LaRoche,” Ms. Gross says. And fear not, any contemporary fur coat will style well while sipping on a hot toddy! Looking for stocking stuffers or just a touch of fur? ML Furs carries a vast selection of accessories, including the locally distributed Hestra luxury brand dress and ski gloves for both men and women. denver + colorado

Ultimately, the return of the stretch pant is what sums up the style stories. When Maria Bogner began experimenting with the sexy stretch pant material in 1952, little did she know that her innovation would turn the world of ski fashion upside down. Initially a favorite of leggy models, including Aspen’s Monica Brown and Stein Eriksen, the pants sold for a pricey $40 but were hugely popular. Racers immediately loved the new material, both for their sleek look and their aerodynamic qualities which meant faster times. The stretch pant became a permanent fashion craze, and even prompted ski legend Warren Miller to write, “I credit the growth of skiing during those years (the ’50s and ’60s) to Maria Bogner and her invention of stretch ski pants. Let’s face it, sex sells. Anyone who was in reasonable shape could put on a pair of her stretch pants and look as sleek and attractive as someone in a James Bond movie.” Maria Bogner, the wife of Bogner founder Willy Bogner, designed skiwear until the 1970s, when her sons Michael and Willy Jr. took the helm. Willy Jr. continues to run the company, and his wife Sonia works on the design side.
