Fashion Nation is like Neiman Marcus for the punk rocker. A wall in the clothing store is covered with photographs of famous bands that have shopped in the store, and I’m betting you haven’t heard of most of them. The Dead Kennedy’s? The Cure? The rockers know. Through word-ofmouth, this is a must-stop for club clothes when the tour bus parks in Denver.

One of the largest collections of Dr. Marten’s shoes and boots kick it at Fashion Nation – hundreds of the hipster clodhoppers line the walls.

Babysitter’s Nightmare cries in the back of the store, a temple to the Little Rock ‘N Roller in your life. Owners Paul and Pam Italiano raised their children in these threads, most of which make a chilling childish statement. Like the T-Shirt that reads “I (Heart) Zombies” and “Zombie Snack.”

T

he Denver dining scene has exploded in the past decade, with nationally recognized eateries opening on every corner. Expensive and somewhat precious, Denver restaurants are to be reckoned with. Ask any foodie.

But one mess hall has been serving up exactly the same simple grub since 1973 to hundreds of people every night (except Mondays). On Mothers Day and Easter they serve more than 3,000.

That’s a lotta fried chicken.

Yup, fried chicken. Finger lickin’ chicken at White Fence Farm. Sitting on an eight-acre spread in Lakewood, a short drive from downtown Denver, this extra family-friendly eatery keeps it simple. Oh it serves salmon and the obligatory steak – but people come here for the fried chicken and the sides. The chicken comes piled high, a sizzling plateful the size of your head, almost

impossible to finish. And the sides keep coming, bowls of bean salad, coleslaw, cottage cheese, pickled beets, hot corn fritters, chicken gravy, potatoes mashed, French fried and baked. This is all so homey and genuine you think Tom Sawyer is your waiter.

WFF is run by legendary Denver restauranteur Craig Caldwell. For decades he operated sports bars like Brooklyn’s, checking IDs and planning Happy Hours. Now at WWF it’s always Happy Hour with families and friends pouring in for that familiar chicken.

If there’s a wait, no one seems to mind. They literally like to wait because they’re on the farm and there’s plenty to do. Dancing to a live band, petting the three goats, squeezing the balloon animals, chasing the geese, watching the model trains, climbing the tree house, eating the fudge, posing for the period

photographs – even bellying up to the bar for a drink.

DOORS OPEN DENVER: Explore Our City Inside Out

he 13th annual Doors Open Denver, presented by the Denver Architectural Foundation, is the premier event showcasing the richness and history of Denver’s built environment and promoting quality design on Saturday, April 29 and Sunday, April 30. Doors Open Denver encourages event participants to observe and engage with the built environment through an artistic and cultural lens.

Headquartered at the iconic Denver Union Station, the event highlights approximately 70 of Denver’s unique spaces, including high-profile, historic and artistic feats of architecture and design.

During the event, visitors are invited to explore our city in the following ways: • Sign up for an Insider Tour. Doors Open Denver offers 120 tours led by architects, landscape architects, historians and urban enthusiasts with special knowledge of Denver’s neighborhoods and buildings.

• Visit one or several of the 70 open sites.

Open sites are buildings that have opened their doors to the public.

• With support of the Bonfils-Stanton Foundation, Doors Open Denver offers six arts and cultural activities, including architecturally inspired hair art, behindthe-scenes videos of area theatres, a performance by five analog synthesizer music artists and more.

Marijuana in the mile high city

enver has been a tourist destination for decades. With beautiful views, a thriving culture, and a plethora of activities and events constantly occurring within the bustling metropolis, it’s no surprise that people flock to the Mile High City. But with the legalization of recreational marijuana in 2014, the typical tourist may have a new reason to travel to higher altitudes.

Colorado voters passed Amendment 64, which legalized recreational marijuana, on November 6th, 2012. The amendment went into effect in Jaunary of 2014. Since then, dispensaries have appeared in droves across Colorado and anyone over the age of 21 can stop in to purchase the drug. In 2014 alone, retailers sold $313 million of recreational marijuana, according to Colorado tax data from the Department of Revenue.

Office (CTO) and the recreational marijuana dispensary, Euflora, to see how the marijuana industry has affected the equally thriving tourist trade.

In 2015, many tourists who participated in marijuana-related activities indicated it was a motivation in their decision to travel to Colorado. By 2016, reports of marijuana participation had risen, although the number of people citing marijuana as a primary influencer in their decision to come to Colorao had decreased. With record-setting tourist growth in Colorado both before and after marijuana legalization, according to the CTO, the drug is not a primary influencer in toursts’ travels. The cannabis industry is one of many attractions in Colorado, and tourists are drawn to the state for more than the legal drug.

While visitors travelling to Colorado from places where marijuana oftentimes isn’t legal, it’s important for tourists to ed-

ucate themselves about marijuana usage and safety before partaking of the drug.

Euflora owner Jamie Perino has noticed that out-of-state visitors oftentimes need more education from Euflora employees about marijuana – the differences between strains, proper usage and dosing, and cost.

The cannabis industry has become an integral part of Colorado’s economy, and its reach extends into the bustling tourist trade. While marijuana is not the primary motivation behind tourists’ travel plans, many visitors to the city are enjoying a high other than the altitude in Denver.

THE WILD ANIMAL SANCTUARY OFFERS A FRESH START FOR ANIMALS

I

magine spending your life in a small cage that is barely big enough to turn around in. Never seeing another of your kind, surviving as part of a roadside zoo, circus, or existing malnourished and underfed. Then imagine being rescued, nursed back to health, receiving regular feedings, and best of all, meeting animals of your own ilk. Space to roam and a clean, warm place to sleep. Welcome to the Wild Animal Sanctuary, a fabulous slice of paradise located just 40 minutes from downtown Denver, and a welcome refuge for more than 450 rescued captive-born animals, primarily large carnivores like tigers, lions, bears and wolves.

The majority of these animals come from individuals who use the animals as attractions at roadside zoos or other profit-making schemes, or they’ve been kept by people desiring a large predator as a pet. In fact, each of the 50 states in the U.S. have different laws and regulations when it comes to keeping these animals – and some states have no laws at all. It’s believed that across the country, there are some 20,000 large carnivores kept outside of zoos – including 4,000 tigers in Texas alone (where these animals are allowed with a permit). Sadly, most of these animals are kept in deplorable conditions, languishing in too-small quarters, abused, abandoned, neglected, malnourished. When they are confiscated by law enforemcent or animal

welfare agencies, they find a ready home at the Wild Animal Sanctuary – and allowed to ‘retire’ from being subject to the whims of unscrupulous people.

When the animals arrive at the sanctuary, their residency begins with a full health exam and extensive rehabilitation. Many arrive underweight and malnourished, and immediately undertake a program to augment their diet; others need dental work or have no muscle tone.

Notably, though, a huge part of the animals’ rehab process is on the social and psychological side of things. So many of the animals that make their way to the sanctuary have never seen another of their breed, learned to bellow the sounds they make in the wild (i.e. lions who have never learned to roar), or don’t know how to be part of a social group like a pack or pride.

The animals are slowly introduced to the other animals, sometimes living in smaller quarters close to the main compound until they are fully rehabilitated and eventually ready to join other animals in large-acreage habitats. In fact, there are a pack of 12 rescue dogs that help younger animals learn how to be a part of social groups – biting, playing, and hierarchy. Once the animals have adjusted to their new home, most are put into large plots of land between five and 25 acres in size. Most of the animals rescued by the Wild Animal Sanctuary denver + colorado

arrive underweight. Relying on donations from companies such as Wal-Mart, between 48,000-50,000 pounds of food per week are provided to the anmals, roughly half of which is meat, and half of which is fruit and vegetables.

The Wild Animal Sanctuary fills a void, since there is no humane society of any kind for large animals. That means that when, for example, 25 Bolivian lions needed a home after the country banned animals in circuses, the Wild Animal Sanctuary got the call. They stepped up to provide a landing spot for the lions.

The sanctuary got its start when a young Pat Craig, who grew up on a farm near Boulder, visited a friend who worked at a zoo and got a behind-the-scenes tour he didn’t expect. What he saw shocked him: multiple animals in small cages were deemed as “extra” animals – no longer attracting visitors, they waited to be euthanized. Craig decided then and there he wanted to dedicate his life to saving these majestic animals, working to learn all he could. In 1980 the Wild Animal Sanctu-

ary was started on a farm near Boulder, before moving to Lyons and finally to its current home, on 720 acres near Keenesburg, Colorado.

Almost by accident, Craig discovered an ideal way to view these majestic rescued animals, and at the same time educate people about the crisis of wild animals held in captivity. He found that if the animals were seen from above, they don’t have the flight or fight reaction to having an unfamiliar person or perceived threat in their living space. To that end, the Wild Animal Sanctuary constructed a raised walkway that allows guests to walk above the animals’ habitats and observe them. The 1.5-mile walkway enables visitors to see foxes, tigers, lions, wolves, bears, and more, all from above.

All the amazing work the Wild Animal Sanctuary performs would not be possible without the support of the public – it operates as a nonprofit and relies on donations from visitors. The sanctuary asks each visitor for a donation or to become an active supporter, whereby a regular

donation is made and the member gets unlimited visits. The Wild Animal Sanctuary is well worth the trip for any visitor or resident of Denver. Given its proximity, there’s simply no reason not to go. The educational value of experiencing the important work of the Wild Animal Sanctuary is priceless. It appeals both as a way to observe and get close to these majestic wild animals, and also as an organization doing important work for disenfranchised animals. By giving a voice to these creatures, the sanctuary opens the hearts of young and old alike, showing them how animals live in the wild rather than in captivity. n the late 1850’s, the Rocky Mountain west was a beacon of hope and prosperity for many who sought to build their fortunes, long before Colorado had even earned its statehood. When gold was first discovered on what we now know as the Front Range, the area burst to life with caravan after caravan of miners and prospectors seeking their fortunes. Small mining towns began to form all over the hills and valleys, and while many were abandoned, a few — like Denver — permanently took root.

Colorado’s capital city has changed immensely over the past 150 years. The dramatic renovation of Union Station, completed in 2014, was key to downtown Denver’s recent revitalization.

Since then, the surrounding neighborhood – now known as the Union Station Neighborhood – is experiencing a renaissance, flooding with new residential construction and pedestrian-friendly streets. To take it a step further, family members earn their titles based on personal skills or talents. Front desk family member Daniel Francis is considered a “music genius” for his love of songs and lyrics, while Caitlin O’Rourke is known as a “dancing guru” for her devotion to movement and rhythm.

These young Denver experts offer a unique and lively resource to their guests, making recommendations on where to dine, shop or discover cultural attractions, ensuring that each guest enjoys a perfect stay in Denver.

“We ask a lot of qualifying questions when interacting with our guests, then let them know our favorites in order to make it a very personalized experience,” O’Rourke says.

VESTA IS BETTER THAN EVER

hen Vesta first opened in 1997, the Denver dining scene was just beginning to blossom from underneath its dusty cowtown patina. The first-born restaurant of Josh and Jen Wolkon’s Secret Sauce restaurant group, Vesta – named for the fiery Roman goddess of the hearth, and originally known as Vesta Dipping Grill – was among those early independent restaurants, and one that would grow to become a casual-dining mainstay in the heart of the Mile High City.

With its buzzing atmosphere and consistently creative menu, Vesta has earned numerous accolades over the years, including nods as best first date spot, top 10 Denver restaurant, and numerous Wine Spectator Awards of Excellence. Indeed, the intimate circular booths, exposed brick walls and rough timber columns lend a sense of

by LANE PARTRIDGE history, while the experienced staff – many of whom have worked at Vesta for 5, 10, even 15 years – embrace exceptionally high standards of service.

Of course, a fresh perspective can work wonders. When Chef Brandon Foster amicably departed to join local nonprofit Project Angel Heart in 2016, Wolkon needed someone new in the Vesta kitchen. Enter Executive Chef Nicholas Kayser, whom Wolkon hired last fall.

As a Colorado-raised, classically trained chef with a bold presence and a culinary pedigree

that belies his youthful age, Kayser was a natural fit to guide the restaurant’s ongoing evolution in refining Vesta’s dining experience.

At the age of 32, Kayser has worked and trained in exotic locales most of us only dream about. Still, he looks back fondly on his childhood years in Colorado, with humble recollections of cooking grilled cheese and tomato sandwiches in his mother’s kitchen that make him smile to this day. Soon after high school, Kayser worked at Denver establishment MAO

Restaurant & Sushi Lounge, where he unexpectedly earned his chops in the kitchen while filling in for an absentee cook.

After proving his skill and resilience, his mentors encouraged him to go to culinary school, leading him to graduate from the International Culinary School at the Art Institute of Colorado. Later, he landed gigs at Richard Sandoval’s Zengo, working alongside local culinary heavy hitters like Troy Guard and Justin Brunson.

When Kayser was 24, a vacation to New York City turned into a permanent move when he fell in love with the Big Apple. In fact, he quickly earned the role of sous chef and, later, chef de cuisine at Thomas Valenti’s fine-dining restaurant, Ouest. “I’m sure [bringing me on] was a risk for Tom,” Kayser admits, but adds that “new blood and a fresh perpective

always go a long way, if you nurture it.”

Nurture it he did. Valenti served as Kayser’s mentor in classical French and Italian cuisine, adding to his previous pan-Asian experience. Several years later, Richard Sandoval invited him to help open the 600-room Yotel just off Times Square. In 2014, Kayser accepted another executive chef offer, this time at Chef Laurent Tourondel’s BLT Steak in Hong Kong. All the while, Kayser was building his repertoire of bold, global flavors and an unshakable enthusiasm for great food.

Culinary experience in hand, Kayser returned to his home country in 2016 seeking something a little more balanced and a little more creative. “Creative development in food is where my passion lies,” Kayser says. When he saw the ad for an executive chef at Vesta, he jumped at the chance.

“The whole Secret Sauce restaurant goup is so family-driven,” he says. “With four successful restaurants and a strong work28

life balance, this is the place I wanted to be. Plus,” he grins,” the excitement of me coming back to Denver sent my mom over the moon.”

Indeed, Kayser isn’t the first one to notice something special about Secret Sauce, which owns and operates two other concepts: Steuben’s, which serves American regional classic cuisine from comfy throwback diner-style spaces in Uptown and Arvada (as well as from the roving Steuben’s food truck named Pearl); and Ace Eat Serve, which invites guests to enjoy Asian-inspired dishes and an energetic PingPong hall in a repurposed industrial garage space. As a founder of the nonprofit EatDenver, Wolkon himself has always been a steadfast supporter of the independent dining communities in Denver and Boulder. What’s more, the group is committed to giving back. Their annual Plates for the Peak dinner parties have raised more than $500,000 for Urban Peak, a local nonprofit or-

ganization committed to ending youth homelessness. Under Wolkon’s direction, the restaurant group has created a culture of respect, balance and community, which resonates with employees and diners alike.

Kayser was quick to pick up on this. He confesses that, besides his immediate rapport with Wolkon, the thing that sold him on joining the Vesta team was having dinner there one night. “The staff was so openarmed, warm and hospitable, even though they had no idea who I was,” he says. “It reinforced my belief that this was the place for me.”

Not surprisingly, the feeling was mutual. “Nick is young, he’s energetic, and he has a real passion for what he’s doing,” Wolkon says. “He’s open-minded, but he also knew Vesta way back when, so he can navigate that balance between past and future.

He also has an amazing floor presence.”

While Kayser’s beaming smile

is reason enough to visit Vesta on a regular basis, his global approach and bold flavors are swoon-worthy in themselves.

Leading the way on the revitalized menu is the Cioppino. “It’s one of my favorite dishes on the new menu,” Kayser says of his glowing masterpiece of lobster tail, shrimp, sea bass, clams and mussels swimming in golden saffron rouille, the aroma of which permeates the air with the ability to arrest an entire room.

The fresh Chickpea Falafel is another favorite; a refined, modern take built on traditional flavors are enhanced with touches of curried tomato jam, baba ganoush, eggplant, and tumeric cucumber salad dressed with tzatziki and infused oils.

The Pork Belly is a top pick among Vesta regulars, as is the Pan Roasted Bone Marrow – a visual stunner with short rib marmalade, candied shallots, parsley, apple, toasted brioche and red wine gastrique decorating the bone, which comes with a

silver spoon playfully dipped into its molten center like a culinary Excalibur.

“Vesta was the forerunner in breaking Denver out of its ‘meat and potatoes’ reputation,” Kayser says. “It’s exciting to be a part of the history and future of the dynamic and constantly growing food scene in Denver.”

Kayser is quick to remind people that, even though they dropped the name, Vesta kept many of the original dipping sauces on the menu, and has simply incorporated them into the dishes. But it’s Kayser’s ability to coax bold flavors from all ethnic corners of the world that makes

Vesta’s modern American cuisine shine in a way that he hopes will retain the confidence of longtime patrons as well as excite new transplants to Denver. “There’s a renewed sense of energy here,” he says, “and whether you arrive in a three-piece suit or flip-flops and shorts after a Rockies game, you’ll be welcome.”

There’s a challenge in keeping any restaurant fresh after two decades in the business, but it’s worth noting that few concepts ever really get that chance. “We’ve never been ones to rest on our laurels,” Wolken says, “and in reality, we’ve always been evolving. As a restaurant

owner, you have to be willing to constantly push yourself to be better.”

For Kayser, there’s pride in the knowledge that Vesta is achieving a level of success with which few in Denver can compare. “Not everyone knows what to do after two decades in business,” he says, “but Josh does.”

The true Vesta experience, Kayser adds, exists in the layers of flavor and hospitality you receive during each and every visit.

While a few things may look just a bit different at Vesta these days, the heart and hearth of the goddess on Blake Street remains steadfast. “Vesta is dependable,

it’s consistently great,” Wolkon says. “The Vesta vibe is as strong as ever, with an intangible positive, sexy and welcoming energy that you feel as soon as you enter. That’s the reason we’ve been in business going on 20 years here. There’s a genuine commitment to hospitality, and a consistent effort to be the best we can be. In my opinion, we’re better than ever.”

hether you’re one of their many loyal fans, or simply among those familiar with their textured musicality, unquestionably OneRepublic has established a fortress in the music and entertainment industry. They have crossed boundaries with songs that have dominated airwaves and media streams.

Recently their music provided the soundtrack to TV commercials for Bose and Chrysler, as well as being featured in big-screen blockbusters like “The Giver” and “Collateral Beauty” starring Will Smith. All this stems from groundwork laid by internationally renowned hits such as “Counting Stars,” “Stop and Stare,” “Good Life,” “Secrets,” and “All the Right Moves,” to name a few.

In addition, frontman Ryan Tedder boasts a prolific co-writing portfolio which includes work with elite artists and bands such as Adele, Maroon 5, Taylor Swift, the list goes on. He has been awarded three Grammys, two from his 32

work with Adele on her albums 21 and 25, both winning Album of the Year. He also scored a Grammy for his work on Taylor Swift’s album, 1989, which also won Album of the Year.

Early on, the band’s success was cultivated

by OneRepublic’s breakthrough single, “Apologize,” which hit airwaves in 2007, blazing the charts with a lyrical irony that resonated, ‘it’s

too late to apologize.’ And it has been unapologetically that Ryan Tedder and band took the industry by storm. Proudly, their artistry is rooted here in Colorado.

Long before “Apologize” was ever penned and put to music, visionary leader Tedder began cultivating his presence in music with a move to Colorado Springs, Colorado from Tulsa, Oklahoma during his senior year of high school.

The move proved serendipitous, when he soon met and befriended co-founding bandmate Zach Filkins. The two formed their first group in 1996, naming it “This Beautiful Mess.” While their early run at making music met with modest local success, the group ultimately dissolved by the end of their senior year when Tedder and Filkins parted ways to attend separate colleges.

Tedder worked relentlessly through college to establish solo artistry, eventually netting an internship with DreamWorks SKG in Nashville. From there, he went on to win a songwriting contest on MTV hosted by N’Sync member Lance Bass. For Tedder, the early breakthroughs foreshadowed things to come,

but it wasn’t until 2002 that a new band called Republic emerged when he and Filkins reunited in Los Angeles. As one of the first acts discovered in this manner, they used Myspace to share their music.

Its reach was effective, catching the discerning ear of artist/producer Timbaland, credited for remixing “Apologize,” signing and ultimately launching the band, known today as OneRepublic.

Four albums and 10 charting hits later, this internationally esteemed group of five is comprised of bassist Brent Kutzle, guitarist Drew Brown, and drummer Eddie Fisher, in addition to founders Tedder, who sings lead vocals, and guitarist Filkins. OneRepublic continues to thrive with the release of its fourth studio album, Oh My My, which climbed on the charts to number three in its first week.

To advance Oh My My, the band teased fans with a tweet that described the new recording as, “new, modern, different, unlike anything we’ve done.” In fact, the

collection of the album’s songs were written in more than 20 cities worldwide, as they toured in 2013-2014. Demonstrating the creative force that fuels their success, the fusion of sound is distinct and perhaps their most eclectic pairing of music and artistic influence yet.

Meshing the evolution of OneRepublic’s unique brand with experience and influence is not new to the band. It is a practice that has allowed their songs to live and breathe in action. One hit single they literally put feet to is “Good Life.”

They did so by founding the 501c3 Good Life Foundation. Tedder says of its mission, “One day it’s providing clean water, the next it’s medicine or food for kids in need. The goal in the end, is to do what we can, while we can, to ensure as many people in this world have a chance at living a good life.”

For the past nine-plus years, the band has been actively involved in charity work globally, yet they remain focused on giv-

ing back to the local community as well.

Four charities they continue to partner with are Colorado-based. This generosity directly impacts our city and state, not just with donations, but with a hands-on approach.

In 2010, Tedder teamed up with The Fray’s frontman, Isaac Slade, to host a battle of the bands for a local youth non-profit called One Liquid House. I met with Tedder then and he was both willing and eager to spend time with young local musicians, freely offering his esteemed musical expertise. He also served as one of the three judges on the panel to the talented young Denver bands who competed.

The following year, OneRepublic organized and hosted a holiday charity event that benefited three prominent Denver charities. Headlined by OneRepublic, they gathered successful Colorado-based bands such as Devotchka, Flobots and The Fray. All willingly donated the collective proceeds from the ticket and mer-

Yet among all the band’s achievements, perhaps the most understated is Tedder’s discerning and powerful songwriting prowess. It continues to push OneRepublic to prominence, and bolsters other musicians he writes with and for to new heights.

When asked during the airing of the 2016 Grammy Awards how he determines which of the songs he writes are for OneRepublic and which are for other artists, he replied, “It’s really just about if I’m singing it and it sounds good and I wrote the lyric, then maybe it’s a OneRepublic song. I’m kind of turning the corner on that, and the lines between what is a OneRepublic song and what isn’t are blurred.”

That same evening Tedder joined Adele onstage as she claimed the Grammy for Album of the Year for 25. He is credited with co-writing the song “Remedy” featured on the album. Earlier in 2016 he revealed to Breathheavy.com, “I play the piano on ‘Remedy’ and I don’t consider myself an A-level piano session player. I wanted to redo the piano with a brilliant

pianist, but she insisted we keep my take on it because there was an emotional context there and it wasn’t perfect. Perfect isn’t perfect.” He concluded, “I hear that record and can hear a couple of moments that I go off tempo, and it drives me crazy,

but it’s part of what makes us human.” It is that drive for perfection that speaks to his unique songwriting, as well as the success that inevitably follows.

As for what’s next for Tedder and OneRepublic, that is where it comes full circle. The band announced they are preparing to head out on a national tour in support of Oh My My, the album inspired by the same. They kick off their travels by headlining the 2017 Honda Civic Tour

with an itinerary slated to make 36 stops over three months. The band will be accompanied by Fitz and The Tantrums and most notably, the third-to-last stop lands OneRepublic and company back home in Denver, at Fiddlers Green on September 9th, 2017. Tickets are on sale now!

If all that OneRepublic has accomplished in the last decade serves as any indication of the future, their tenacious drive and work ethic is nowhere near exhausted. Savor the 42-mile journey through the mountains from Durango to Silverton on the historic Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad. Upon arrival, enjoy lunch and stroll around downtown or stay a night at the railroad’s newly renovated Grand Imperial Hotel. Check the train’s calendar for special events like the Durango Blues Train, Fall Photographer’s Train, Brew Train and Durango Wine and Rails, and make sure to stop by the free D&SNGRR Railroad Museum right by the depot in Durango.

Consider staying at the historic Strater Hotel at the corner of Seventh Street and Main Avenue, stop by the Diamond Belle Saloon for ragtime music year-round and a gunfight out front in the summer, and catch a show at the Henry Strater Theatre. The hotel is said to have the world’s largest collection of American Victorian antiques, many found in the 93 guest rooms.

All ages will enjoy posing in Old West-style photos taken at Thru the Lens and enjoying the tasty grub and boot-tapping music at Bar D Wrangler’s chuck wagon dinner and Western show, offered nightly from Memorial Day through Labor Day weekends. Throughout much of the summer, True West rodeo takes place at the local fairgrounds on Wednesday evenings, and in early October the Durango Cowboy Poetry Gathering celebrates ranching and the American cowboy through poetry, music, storytelling, art and a parade.

Enjoy time in the magnificent outdoors rafting down the Animas River, riding horseback in the mountains, taking a jeep ride to old mining towns or a pontoon boat ride in nearby Vallecito Lake.

Make a day of it walking or biking the paved Animas River Trail; stopping at the Powerhouse Science Center, Durango Library and local fish hatchery; and refueling at The Animas River Café located at the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Durango or Animas Brewing Company, both on the river’s edge.

From mid-May through mid-October, soar through the air and across the Animas River on zip lines at Soaring Tree Top

Adventures, offering an amazing 27 spans and 34 platforms.

Located 32 miles north of Durango and accessible only by D&SNGRR, this is the longest zip line course in the United States and comes complete with a gourmet lunch served on a platform overlooking the river. If an adventure closer to town is needed, check out the zip lines, slack lines and paintball park at Full Blast Adventure Center.

During the winter, head straight for the slopes at Purgatory Resort with 1,360 acres for skiing and snowboarding, or try snow biking (the bikes with mega tires), ski biking (shorter and equipped with skis), tubing, snowcat dinner excursions and more. For skiing, tubing and ice skating just minutes from the heart of downtown, hit the slopes or the rink at the small, city-owned Chapman Hill.

If these are still not enough options, the Durango area offers a flurry of other winter activities, such as snowmobile tours, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing at Vallecito Lake and Hillcrest Golf Club, dog sledding, snowcat skiing and sleigh rides.

In the summer there is plenty to do at Purgatory, with an alpine slide, The Plunge Zipline, rope courses, miniature golf, scenic chairlift rides, bike trails and much more.

Speaking of bikes, Durango is passionate about the sport.

From downtown it is easy to access 30 miles of mountain biking trails, or head to a higher elevation and ride over two mountain passes to Silverton, following the route of the 46th annual Iron Horse Bicycle Classic, one of the largest and longest continuously run cycling events in the United States. If a golf club or fly rod is your sporting equipment of choice, hit the links at Dalton Ranch or Hillcrest Golf Course or book a fly-fishing excursion with local outfitters for a day on the water.

Whatever the season and sport, a relaxing massage and soak at Trimble Natural Hot Springs is the perfect way to spend some down time.

Culture & History Haven

Let’s start with the music. Whether your preference is a night at the symphony or jamming at a concert in the park, Durango caters to a variety of musical tastes with Music in the Mountains, the San Juan Symphony, concerts in the park and Durango Bluegrass Meltdown. The Community Concert Hall at Fort Lewis College also is a popular venue for local and touring bands and productions.

Durango Arts Center celebrates visual and performing arts, featuring exhibits, classes and live performances. A Spring Art Walk and Fall Art Work are a great chance to stop by the arts center and more than a dozen local galleries to view great art and mingle with artists and art lovers.

Learn about the area’s rich history at the Center for Southwest Studies at the college and Animas Museum, before heading west to see Mesa Verde National Park, Ute Mountain Tribal Park, Hovenweep National Monument, Anasazi Heritage Center and Crow Canyon Archaeological Center. Another option is journeying east to Chimney Rock National Monument.

In a twist on a common mountain resident saying, “ I came for the winter but stayed for the summer,” in Durango it’s also true that “You came for the mountains, but you’ll stay for the food and beverage scene.”

Indulge in a meal at the award-winning El Moro Spirits and Tavern or spend a summer afternoon on the patios of more than 20 restaurants around town. With 100plus restaurants to choose from, Durango is a hotbed for cuisine that blends flavors from around the world and its own backyard. There is a strong eat local mindset and an abundance of locally raised meat, fruits and vegetable and handcrafted food products served at local eateries and sold at the Durango Farmer’s Market. Or go straight ot the source with a farm tour and meal at James Ranch and a stop at nearby Honeyville Honey.

Durango also is a crafty and creative town in terms of libations. The town is best known for being home to six craft breweries 40

and brew pubs – Animas Brewing Company, BREW Pub & Kitchen, Carver Brewing Co., Durango Brewing Co., Ska Brewing Co. and Steamworks Brewing Co. – but also has two distilleries. Durango Craft Spirits Distillery was the town’s first grain-to-grass distillery since prohibition, and Honey House Distillery is a part of Honeyville Honey’s operation. If liquid grapes are preferred, pay a visit to the local Four Leaves Winery and Fox Fire Farms in nearby Ignacio for tastings.

New on the scene – but keep quiet about it – is Bookcase & Barber, an upscale, vintagestyle barbershop with a cozy speakeasy bar hidden behind a bookshelf. For admittance, remember to ask, “Who is Hemingway?”

If travels are timed just right, sign up for the annual Tour de Farms held in August and choose between a leisurely sixmile, in-town bike tour and a 25-mile route loop highlighting area agriculture and culminating in a tasty seasonal lunch made from local ingredients.

After all the ways to stay busy while visiting Durango, travelers will want a comfortable place to say “good night.” Historic properties like Strater Hotel, The General Palmer, Rochester Hotel and The Leland House are comfortable places for sweet dreams, along with national brands like DoubleTree, Best Western and Holiday Inn and charming bed and breakfasts, ranches and cabins.
