Now in its third year, Dallas’ SOLUNA International Music & Arts Festival is on firm ground.

With an expanding history of dramatic performances by wellknown and respected artists and musicians (including contemporary stars such as Pharrell Williams and St. Vincent), it seems the sky is the limit. We’ll tell you about this year’s exciting schedule of events that runs for three weeks this spring. It’s this edition of Dallas Hotel Magazine’s cover story.

Consider 24 hours straight of racing on the legendary Daytona International Speedway, with cars wedged together running at dizzying speeds up to 200 mph.

The first major auto race of the year brought out some of sport’s biggest names (Jeff Gordon, Scott Dixon, Buddy Rice and Graham Rahal). The winner was Dallas’ own Nick Boulle, who made history being a part of the youngest group of drivers to win.

We caught up with the 27-yearold driver to get the inside track on his team’s exhilarating victory.

Boulle’s parents, Denis and Karen Boulle, own de Boulle, an independent jewelry salon in Dallas, which has carried the Rolex brand for more than 25 years.

When the young Boulle was a preteen, a de Boulle client invited him to check out a Ferrari at the Texas Road Speedway in College Station.

He says things took off from there.

“I got to sit in the passenger seat,” he remembers.

“When I got out, I announced that I was going to be a driver when I grew up.”

We caught up with the emerging international racing star for a question and answer session on his skyrocketing sports career.

DHM: When did the racing bug first bite you?

NB: I started racing Go-Karts … over time, I guess it sort of slowly evolved into something bigger.

DHM: For the novices reading this, can you briefly describe Rolex 24 Hours of Daytona?

NB: When you talk about professional motorsports worldwide, there are a few big races: the Monaco Grand Prix…24 Hours of Le Mans. Daytona is one of those big races — the equivalent of Le Mans.

DHM: What inspired you to race for 24 straight exhausting hours at dizzying speeds of close to 200 mph?

NB: I’ve always been an athlete, and enjoyed pushing myself to find out where the limit is.

The thing about racing at a place like Daytona is you’re on for 24 hours straight…you are on the knife’s edge for every [moment] you’re in the car.

It’s an endurance race.

The longest stint I did was about three hours, which is unusual — two hours is a long time.

Every couple of hours in the car results in about 2,000 calories burned, I’m told.

It’s a lot like riding a bicycle; the [pressure] on your body, not only from gravitational force but also every time you put on the break, which is like a 60-pound “deadlift” with your foot.

DHM: For those who have never driven on a track, much less

NB: We are working on sponsorship for more races as well as figuring out what’s the right step up — prototype is one-step up, or maybe we run some GT3 [Grand Cup Touring Cars] races.

My goal is always to take the racing as far as it will go.

We’ll see if the right opportunity arises.

Cole says one of the distinctive elements that sets it apart from other foods is ingredients. “It’s all about respect,” he says.

“Like a meal in which you eat every single bite, and don’t leave anything behind — that’s out of respect for the food as well,” he says.

“It’s really about simplicity and not doing too much to it.

“I think they [Japan] do that better than any country in the world.”

Cole’s newest addition to the Dallas cuisine scene is the trim and stylish Top Knot, which opened upstairs from Uchi last year.

It’s referred to as a “modern American restaurant with Asian roots” — sharable plates with market ingredients and flavors from around the globe, plus Japanese whiskey, cocktails, craft beer, wine and sake at the bar.

Over the years his distinctively original cuisine has been the subject of numerous stories in industry publications including Food & Wine, Bon Appétit, Travel + Leisure, Saveur and Southern Living, as well as USA Today, The Wall Street Journal, GQ and The New York Times.

Texas metropolitan areas?

“The Dallas dining scene is always at the forefront of Texas,” he says.

“If you look back to the 1990s…Dallas put food on the map. There is such a history — with cuisine and chefs. There is definitely a bar raised in Dallas…. I am honored to have a restaurant there.”

The Uchi concept, he says, has always been devoted to quality and a marked lack of pretentiousness — from the process of hiring the right people, to the customization of meals.

The fact that the restaurant’s roots are in Austin also carries a special significance.

ow in its third year, Dallas’ Nancy A. Nasher and David J. Haemisegger Family SOLUNA International Music & Arts Festival is on firm ground.

With an expanding history of dramatic performances by well-known and respected artists and musicians, the curated, three-week experience includes a series of presentations and mixed media installations by some of the most exciting contemporary visionaries working today.

“SOLUNA is a unique experience to explore all that Dallas and the Arts District has to offer,” says Jonathan Martin, President & CEO of the Dallas Symphony Orchestra, of the prestigious spring festival.

“Each collaboration combines artistic mediums to not just defy the boundaries of genres, but to create new art forms altogether.”

Martin knows the territory well: He’s been in on the ground floor of the esteemed series since its inception in 2015.

“We are particularly interested in providing a platform for artists of all disciplines to come and create something unexpected,” he adds.

This year, SOLUNA is scheduled from May 15 through June 4 at venues in and around the 68-acre Dallas Arts District.

The area is home to the city’s most important cultural landmarks; facilities for visual, performing and developing arts.

It includes the lush Morton H. Meyerson Symphony Center, Dallas Museum of Art, Nasher Sculpture Garden, Klyde Warren Park and others.

The fact that SOLUNA will intersect with the annual Fort Worth Opera Festival and esteemed Van Cliburn International Piano Competition, which are scheduled for May 25 through June 10 in Fort Worth, is fortuitous.

It only adds to the region’s rich patina as one of the most significant arts centers in the U.S. “SOLUNA was born out of a desire to unlock the vast potential of classical music,” says Dallas Symphony Orchestra Music Director, Jaap van Zweden.

“Presenting the greatest compositions of the past 300 years alongside works by a roster of established and emerging visual artists is what the festival is all about.”

Maestro van Zweden, who is scheduled to depart the DSO for a similar position with the New York Philharmonic in 2018 succeeding Alan Gilbert, will lead two weekends of concerts this spring, centered on the theme, “Dreams and Illusions.”

CLASSICAL EMPHASIS

SOLUNA’s 2017 classical linchpin is a performance of English composer Sir Edward Elgar’s choral masterpiece, The Dream of Gerontius.

His stirring interpretation of Blessed John Henry Newman’s 1965 poem, the prayer of a dying man and the dynamic angelic and demonic responses, is scheduled on May 26 and 27.

Van Zweden will conduct the performances, which will feature world-renowned British mezzo-soprano Alice Coote, superstar tenor Paul Groves and distinguished bass-baritone John Relyea.

The festival’s final classical program on June 2 and 4, is Sergei Prokofiev’s heroic Symphony No. 5, described by the Russian composer as a “symphony of the greatness of the human spirit, a song of praise of free and happy mankind.”

A special performance on June 3 features Beyond the Score®, an innovative multi-media and performance event that lends a fascinating historical context prior to the full performance.

The Chicago Symphony’s Gerard McBurney is the creative director, and scheduled to appear as narrator for the special presentation.

Maestro van Zweden is pleased such unique pieces are to be performed, a hallmark of the Dallas festival.

“That’s what SOLUNA is for,” says van Zweden, “to present music that may be unknown or perhaps show it in a different context.”

The Dallas Symphony Orchestra is also scheduled to present a pair of solo recitals as part of the festival.

DSO artist-in-residence, baritone Matthias Goerne performs Die Winterreise, Franz Schubert’s epic song cycle for voice and piano, on May 16 at Dallas City Performance Hall.

Grammy Award-winning pianist Yefin Bronfman is a passionate player of astounding technique, and a Dallas favorite.

He returns to present a recital at the Meyerson on May 22, performing works by Bartók, Debussy and Stravinsky’s Petrushka.

Bronfman will also perform Brahms’s Piano Concerto No. 2 with van Zweden and the Dallas Symphony Orchestra during SOLUNA. Chamber music has been an important focus of SOLUNA. In fact, since 2015 the festival’s opening chamber concert has been a tradition.

This year is no exception. On May 15, SOLUNA presents A Musician’s View, an intimate chamber concert performed by members of the Dallas Symphony Orchestra at the Meyerson Symphony Center.

On May 23, DSO Principal Clarinet Gregory Raden and Concertmaster Alexander Kerr will lead a chamber music performance at Dallas City Performance Hall.

The concert features Osvaldo Golijov’s The Dreams and Prayers of Isaac the Blind and Mendelssohn’s youthful Octet for Strings.

Over the past two years, SOLUNA highlights have included cutting-edge contemporary material, a refreshing shot in the arm for the Dallas arts scene.

On May 17, 2015, talented 2001 Lake Highlands High School graduate Annie Clark, known professionally as St. Vincent, made her orchestral debut with the Dallas Symphony Orchestra.

The second half of her SOLUNA set that evening included spellbinding renditions of her original songs “Cheerleader,” “Marrow,” “Digital Witness” and “Huey Newton” performed with the symphony, led by former DSO Assistant Conductor Karina Canellakis, as a rainstorm

raged outside the Meyerson Symphony Center.

Rules of the Game, a world premiere on last year’s program, was another breakthrough moment for the festival.

The collaborative performance piece featured choreography by dance visionary Jonah Bokaer, scenic design by Daniel Arsham and an original score by Grammy-winning singer Pharrell Williams, best known for his role as a judge on NBC’s “The Voice” and his peppy pop anthem “Happy,” with David Campbell, who arranged the score for the DSO. The Wall Street Journal called it “a groundbreaking production,” and “the ultimate power play” in collaboration for the trio of esteemed contemporary artists.

This year’s edition of SOLUNA will feature a number of newly commissioned works and world premiere performances, which Curator-At-Large Muriel Quancard refers to as “a central part of the festival’s mission.”

Quancard says she deliberately sought artists well known for experimenting with music and sound, “Oftentimes,” she says, “creating a contemplative, ethereal and sometimes cosmic experience.”

True to the mission, SOLUNA will present a world premiere musical soundscape by Grammy-winning composer and pianist Henri Scars Struck.

The music echoes and responds to Landscape Relativities: The Collaborative Works of Arnold Chang and Michael Cherney, the sensational exhibition of composite works by celebrated-painter Arnold Chang and photographer Michael Cherney, concurrently on view at the Crow Collection of Asian Art, also located in the Dallas Arts District.

Opening on May 16 and playing throughout the three-week run, the music/sound piece is designed to “retune minds…evoking reverie and contemplation” among observers.

The Mexico-City based artist draws inspiration from her urban surroundings in addition to contemporary consumerism, incorporating the signs, objects and points that form part of everyday life into her practice.

On May 24, Agence5970, a unique combination of disciplines comprised of artist duo Frank and Lee Dufour, will stage their latest work, dreamSpace, at the Meyerson.

Widely acclaimed for their 2014 installation DREAMARCHITECTONICS at Dallas Contemporary, Agence5970 once again creates an immersive, interactive audio-visual experience, encouraging a state of meditation, questioning and exploring the intimate structure of dreams.

Following its 2014 world premiere in New York City, Traveling Lady, written and directed by artist Jessica Mitrani, will make its Dallas debut on June 1.

The performance conjures the daring spirit of Nellie Bly, the iconic American journalist who circled the globe in 72 days.

Spanish actress Rossy de Palma, best known for her role in director Pedro Almodóvar’s Oscar winning motion picture Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown, embodies this timeless figure.

Part live performance-part film, Traveling Lady is a cosmic journey in multimedia.

EDUCATIONAL VALUES

On May 28 Passport to the Park, a partnership with Downtown Dallas’ Klyde Warren Park, features music by The Obscure Dignitaries, Helping Hand Drums, Mariachi Los Unicos, the Barack Obama Male Leadership Academy Jazz Band and Dallas Asian American Youth Orchestra.

Visitors can also enjoy free yoga led by Exhale Spa, arts and crafts, and science demonstrations led by the Perot Museum’s TECH Trucks.

This all-day event culminates in an afternoon performance by the New Phil-

harmonic Orchestra of Irving at Dallas City Performance Hall, Latino Connections!

Rhythms of Dance, with music by composers from Mexico and Argentina based on their nation’s dances.

A regular feature of the festival, SOLUNA and UT Southwestern’s O’Donnell Brain Institute will present Music and the Brain on May 20.

The morning event will feature renowned neuroscientists speaking on the science of creativity at Dallas City Performance Hall.

Dallas Dreams Big is an interactive art experience that joins musicians with participants in spoken word clubs and community workshops across North Texas.

A series of residencies combining DSO musicians, spoken word artist Will Richey, students and alumni from the DSO’s Young Strings program will result in the final work held at the Latino Cultural Center on May 30.

SOLUNA will also include partnerships with Dallas Theater Center in their performances of Electra, Texas Ballet Theater’s Alice in Wonderland and Dallas Black Dance Theatre’s annual Spring Celebration.

The DSO will also present the annual Memorial Day Concert with fireworks at Flag Pole Hill on May 29.

ilman fertitta’s life is that of a sun-kissed, Gulf Coast, gold-plated Texas tycoon.

For the unaware, a quick Internet search will rustle up a stack of stories on everything from his mega-money deals and celebrity hob nobs, to historic splurges, reality-television success and more.

While Dallas-Fort Worth readers may not be as familiar, ask Houstonians about him and you’re likely to get a juicy story or two.

Brash, bold and well-heeled, Fertitta’s among the most talked-about people in the state, presiding over a business empire that’s enough to turn heads and change Texas weather patterns.

Last October, The Houston Chronicle reported that his wealth had skyrocketed by $400 million in 2016 to a lofty $2.7 billion.

In case you’re wondering, that puts him at #246 on Forbes’ list of the 400 wealthiest Americans.

If you’re curious about a comparison, perennial pole-sitter Bill Gates remained #1 with $81 billion, followed by Am34

But monetary success is only a part of Fertitta’s story.

CLIMBING TO THE TOP

It all began innocently enough in 1979 when the bold young man talked a Texas bank into loaning the twenty-something kid the money to purchase a women’s ready-to-wear shop stocked with samples from the Dallas Apparel Mart.

“You know that was quite a day, to walk into a bank and borrow $6,000,” says Fertitta retrospectively. “That was a big day.”

Armed with an action-oriented, entrepreneurial thirst, Fertitta transitioned again. He began building homes, hotels and strip centers just prior to the infamous mid-1980s Texas oil bust.

By the second half of the decade, fortunes changed dramatically.

Fertitta took full advantage, eventually purchasing controlling interest Landry’s Seafood and Willie G’s Seafood & Steakhouse. It was only 11 years later that opened his one-hundredth Landry’s location.

Houston’s $30 million Downtown Aquarium followed in 2003, housing over 200 species of aquatic animals. The aquarium also has dining options and a stunning ballroom for banquet and corporate events.

By 2005 Fertitta diversified further as he began buying Golden Nugget casinos in Nevada and Atlantic City, later opening others in nearby Biloxi and Lake Charles.

And as if that’s not enough, construction continues on The Post Oak, his 38-story, mixed-use development located near the Houston Galleria. It will feature a ritzy hotel and various restaurants, as well as space for select retail.

Fertitta has been profiled countless times, and the stories have characterized him as “no-holds-barred,” “ruthless,” “fiery” and even “arrogant.”

Good-naturedly, he prefers to characterize himself as “confident.”

The Galveston native started his career working in Vic Fertitta’s restaurant, Pier 23. When you work with your dad in the kitchen and you check in and buy food, and wait tables, you learn the fundamentals,” he recalls.

“It was a learning lesson. All of my kids have worked at one of the restaurants just to understand the other side of it.”

“Galveston is a small town where everybody knows everybody,” says Kyle Janek.

These days, Dr. Janek is chief of anesthesia services at a medical center near Austin.

But he grew up in Galveston, and knew “Tim” when they were high school kids.

“He’s self-made” and his success came through “hard work and drive.”

Janek says Fertitta is loyal to his roots, and paid special attention to the area along the Texas Gulf Coast.

ing the late oilman, developer and philanthropist, who was also a Galveston native.

To his credit, “Tilman is loyal to his hometown.

He was willing to take a gamble,” Holbrook adds, referring to Fertitta’s development in the region, and, as a result, “brought jobs” to the area.

Fertitta began his college education at Texas Tech University in Lubbock where he studied business. “I went to school there a couple years and then I came back and went to the University of Houston,” the legendarily proud alumnus says of the school where he studied hotel management.

Nowadays, Fertitta is head of the University System Board of Regents. He recently made a $20-million donation to rejuvenate the school’s aged basketball arena.

With construction slated to have begun in March, the dream is well on the way.

“It will be the Fertitta Center,” he says proudly.

Dave Scallan is president of Spoken Word Communication, a Texas-based consulting firm. He’s observed Fertitta for years.

“Tilman went from what I would call a ‘super fan’ five years ago, to chairman of the system with a huge influence on the decisions that guide the University,” says Scallan.

“He’s taken the college from a regional level to a national player, not just in terms of sport, but also overall as a university…and been a game-changer, bringing positive publicity to the school that didn’t really exist before he was chairman.”

Clearly, “Billion Dollar Buyer” is a much different program than the others, nevertheless successful in its own right.

For his part, Fertitta genuinely seems to care about advising the contestants. So, what’s the experience been like for him?

He says two things have stood out: “Number one: it gets me out to see the latest things and see what people are doing out there, especially with how quickly the world is changing with all the millennials.

“And number two,” he adds, “there’s nothing like mentoring small young companies that are lost and to be able to work with a lot of these companies and then give them a purchase order that changes their lives.”

With the show’s successful sophomore season officially put to bed in late February 2017, Fertitta’s passion for mentoring young companies is plain: “We are looking forward to season three,” he says.

Forbes has referred to Fertitta as “the richest restauranteur in the world.” What does he think when he hears such remarks?

“Well, it happened over a period of years,” he explains. “I’ve been successful since I was in my mid-twenties. It wasn’t like I woke up one day and was worth all this money.”

So: Are fame and fortune always what they’re cracked up to be? “It’s nice when you get that new car…it’s really special the first day. Raised on the Texas coast, has Fertitta’s home state’s unique qualities impacted his view of the world?

“It’s good to come back to Texas,” he explains.

“It’s not a myth that the people in the South are really nice and it’s a great place.

“You know, travelling around the state to Dallas, El Paso, to San Antonio, to East Texas,” he says.

“I love the culture and the diversity of Houston and the State of Texas.”

Seeing his half-mile-long Kemah Boardwalk development today is a huge point of pride for the business giant.

Travel + Leisure Magazine named it one of America’s top-ten boardwalks, mentioned in the same breath with classics such as Brooklyn’s Coney Island and the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk in California.

For people who haven’t experienced the fun, food, play-stay Kemah environment, Fertitta describes it in all passionate terms.

“Well it’s probably the best masterplanned boardwalk in the United States,” he says.

Fertitta’s company, which developed and operates “every single establishment” of of the development.

“I think if any one project [showcases] the ability of Landry’s [team], it’s these people,” he beams.

With his company’s restaurants and business interests sprinkled around the globe, Fertitta could probably rule his kingdom from anywhere in the world.

Yet he’s decided to stay based in his favorite bayou city.

“Houston is the fourth largest city in the United States,” he says. “It’s a great place to raise a family…a friendly place, a nice place.”

While Fertitta says he still loves to travel, and owns homes in other places, it appears there’s no place like home.

“I think Houston is probably more of a southern city and Dallas is a little more metropolitan like Los Angeles,” he observes.

“Dallas is also great retail city and, you know, [while] the two cities are totally different, they are complementary of each other in the State of Texas.”
