Mike is a Dallas area commercial photographer specializing in helping businesses and municipalities tell their stories with engaging images. When the creative team at Dallas Hotel Magazine was looking for the perfect cover shot for this issue, we came across Mike and the beautiful photo that graces our summer cover. In addition, we asked him to provide many of the shots you see in the feature story on page 32. His incredible eye and attention to detail make his work stand out and we couldn’t be happier. Mike says it best, “My passion is making photographs that touch people and tell a story whether it’s about a special place, special people, or a special moment. A great image tells a story that endures beyond physical space and time. Each image is by definition unique and reaches people in a way like nothing else. To make a photo for someone that reflects something unique about their story that they had never seen before is the most gratifying part of my work.”

here are hot summer temperatures. And then there is Dallas, Texas, USA. If you’re visiting from out of the area, and not acclimated to our sweltering season, have no fear. We actually pride ourselves on not merely surviving, but thriving during the summer months. It’s a time for lounging by swanky pool scenes during the day, followed by refreshing happy hours and delightful al fresco dining in the evening. “When you’re alone and life is making you lonely, you can always go…downtown.” British ingénue Petula Clark could have easily been referring to Dallas when she first sang her iconic song in the sixties. With a reinvigorated look and feel, Downtown Big D is making an exciting splash these days with developers. We’ll get you up-to-date with our cover story for this new edition of Dallas Hotel Magazine. Each year our legislature formally appoints an official Texas state musician. It’s an elite list including Lyle Lovett, Willie Nelson, Sara Hickman and Billy Gibbons of ZZ Top, all

of whom have served a one-year term. Roadhouse rocker and alt-country pioneer Joe Ely is our representative for 2016, and his story is a blast. Texans love to travel, so here’s a fresh idea. At just 760 miles long and 55 miles wide, Cuba is truly and island paradise. Over 2.5 million people descend upon her shores annually. Now that the icy political relationship between the U.S. and our neighbor to the south has thawed a bit, we’ll take a look at some travel options and exotic resorts available on the “Pearl of the Antilles.” From honky-tonks to hipsterhaunts, “DARTable Gems” are the legendary locales, beloved institutions, unique boutiques and places that make Dallas special. And the best part is, Dallas Area Rapid Transit will drop you off on the doorstep. We’ll show you the shortcuts. Ready to get your drink on? From dynamic to profuse, when it comes to Happy Hour, Dallas doesn’t miss a trick. Check out our can’t miss hit list of awesome hot spots. Finally, animal lovers won’t want to miss our heartwarming

Parting Shot: it comes from the Dallas Zoo and is simply “unforgettable.” If you’re up for a performance, North Texas stages are worldclass and feature everything from ballet and contemporary dance, to dramas and Broadway musicals, symphonies, opera, rock, pop and more. Our much-expanded version of The Scene brings Dallas in focus – it’s a spectacular roadmap for any given day or night. We also have complete listings with insider details on the area’s A-list restaurants, shopping, spas and more. We hope you’ll enjoy your time in our favorite hometown, as well as Dallas Hotel Magazine – thanks for taking a look. It’s the “definitive guide for discerning visitors to Big D.”

All Aboard the Adventure Safari

G

et your tickets to ride the revamped Wilds of Africa Adventure Safari at the Dallas Zoo, which reopened in March after a $3 million renovation that includes air conditioning, new animal exhibits and more! The one-of-a-kind monorail originally opened in 1990 and is one of the most popular attractions at the Zoo, with more than 4 million riders so far. The attraction eases along at 3 mph on a one-mile loop around the back side of the 106-acre zoo, allowing visitors to see six

habitats not accessible by foot. Get ready for your sightseeing adventure by boarding at the Ajabu Station and prepare to crisscross the African continent in 17 minutes, seeing dozens of species of animals along the way. The excitement builds as you enter the rustic station, featuring posters for African travel destinations and clocks to time your departure. While waiting for your trip, you’ll meet African cranes and storks milling about their habitat. Check the field guide in each refurbished car to become acquainted with the animals you’ll soon see. As you depart the station, get a glimpse of crews working on the Simmons Hippo Outpost, scheduled to open in 2017. Ascend to the North African mountains to view Nubian ibex

and Kordofan aoudad. Visit the Samburu Game Preserve to see eland, dik-dik and caracal cats, then on to the Great Rift Valley, where waterfalls await you, along with great white pelicans and bongo antelope. The Sahara Desert is home to critically endangered addax and Somali wild asses, as well as ostrich and gemsbok. Along the way, our Adventure Safari guides point out animals and share other fun facts about Africa and the scenery that makes up each African habitat. Visit the Serengeti bush to meet our new lesser kudu, as well as Thompson’s gazelles, gerenuks, secretary birds and lappetfaced vultures. As you descend around the corner, you enter Western Tanzania and Central Africa. Here you’ll see chimpanzees at

the Kimberly-Clark Chimpanzee Forest, followed by Nile crocodiles and wattled cranes. Hear about western lowland gorillas at the Jake L. Hamon Gorilla Conservation Research Station, then head south to the tip of Africa to view African penguins from high above, before the monorail Adventure Safari returns to Ajabu Station. “This experience starts with creating a fun adventure for our guests,” says Sean Greene, vice president of guest experiences. “During their 17-minute journey, they learn how the Dallas Zoo cares for wildlife and supports conservation efforts around the world.” The Adventure Safari operates every day. Tickets are $5 per person 3 and older; 2 and under are free. Hop aboard and begin your African adventure!

allas’ iconic Hilton Anatole Hotel has it all: luxurious rooms, a rooftop steakhouse, a museum quality art-n-antique collection… and now the Hilton Anatole is ramping up for an epic summer season with the debut of Jade Waters, a spectacular 4-acre water wonderland. “The Hilton Anatole is nationally renowned for its unique ability to balance resort-style amenities with an abundance of meeting space and capacity to groups of all sizes,” says Harold Rapoza, General Manager of the Hilton Anatole. “Our newest addition – Jade Waters, an upscale resort-style pool complex, which opens in July – was conceptualized to attract leisure and group guests in the summer months. This new facility will provide a refined, upscale environment most similar to that found at resorts in San Antonio and Austin. The experience will be truly unparalleled here in Dallas.”

And according to Brooke Hoffman, Public Relations Manager at the Anatole, the new addition has already been generating quite a buzz. “We have noticed an increase in family bookings and expect to see that growth continue once the facility is unveiled this month. We’ve also been pleasantly surprised by the positive response we have received from our group clients as well.” Stylish and utterly laid-back, the $15 million Asian-inspired resort not only features a heated 4,000-square-foot leisure pool with a 23-seat swim-up bar, but also a 630-foot-long lazy river and a 7,000-square-foot beachentry family pool – complete with a splash zone and two 180-foot water slides. Oh, and about that world-class art? Along with its 1,000-piece indoor art collection, the hotel has installed 46 more art pieces around the complex’s lush landscape – all of which can be admired while floating in the

lazy river. Should you need a respite from the sun and water-based frolics, an array of plush day beds and luxury private cabanas offer the perfect place to cool down. The complex also includes a 120seat outdoor bar and grill, as well as multiple spaces for hosting outdoor functions. In addition to water activities, the resort dials up the fun with everything from lawn games and dive-in movies to special events. And instrumental in creating the overall Jade Waters experience is the new Recreation Director, Ta’alolo Puni Pau, who previously served as the Recreation Manager at Disney’s acclaimed Aulani Resort and Spa on the island of Oahu. “We are excited about the unique expertise and energy Ta’alolo brings to the Hilton Anatole,” says Rapoza. “The Anatole is internationally recognized as a top destination for groups and conventions. We feel that this appointment

A bird’s eye view of the proposal design Jade Waters.

is a further step toward strengthening our position as a top destination for leisure and family travelers.” Which is no easy feat in Dallas’ increasingly competitive hotel market, but then the Anatole is not just any hotel. “Our owners [Crow Holdings] are greatly supportive of the Hilton Anatole and our team members who work to provide an exceptional stay for our guests,” says Rapoza. “This property is far more than just an asset to them. They built the hotel and continue to be

involved and dedicated to its success to this day, which is pretty rare in our industry. They are always discussing ways to ensure the Anatole stays ‘top of mind’ among the many hotels that have opened in Dallas and nationwide over the past 10 to 15 years. This project will further set us apart from our competition, solidifying Hilton Anatole as the premiere hotel choice for guests seeking an exceptional visit to Dallas and its many attractions during the summer months.”

About Hilton Anatole Located within a 45-acre campus, Hilton Anatole features two high-rise atriums; a 27-story tower; and 1,606 luxuriously appointed guestrooms with first-class, in-room amenities and wired internet access. Additionally, the hotel offers guests more than 500,000 square feet of event space as well as a variety of recreational activities, including viewing the Art Collection, one of the largest and most intriguing private assemblies in the world; an 80,000-square-foot fitness center; tennis courts;

one of the finest lap pools in the region; an indoor jogging track; gift and sundry boutiques; V Spa, the hotel’s newest luxury spa oasis; and five unique restaurants and bars for dining and entertainment, including the new high-tech Media Grill + Bar, the critically-acclaimed SĒR Steak + Spirits and the chic Gossip Bar. www.hiltonanatole.com

allas is scorching hot this time of year, but locals don’t let that keep us from our social gatherings. We just look for air-conditioned spaces and long, cool drinks of anything tasty (preferably alcoholic). After a long day at the office, sight-seeing or shopping there’s nothing better than a great Happy Hour to sit a spell, knock one back and unwind with friends or your partner. Dallas has many entertainment districts within minutes of Downtown that can provide great people watching, delicious nibbles, and creative libations. There are generally two ways to approach your search for the perfect meeting place: cheap drinks or atmosphere? It’s a bonus if you can accomplish both in one venue. Here are a few suggestions:

Downtown Dallas is having its moment in the spotlight. BY ILENE JACOBS

A SERIES OF AMBITIOUS PROJECTS HAS TRANSFORMED DOWNTOWN DALLAS FROM A STERILE OFFICE PARK TO A VIBRANT URBAN NEIGHBORHOOD WHERE THOUSANDS COME TO LIVE AND EVEN MORE COME TO PLAY.

f you haven’t visited Downtown Dallas lately, then you probably won’t recognize it. Sure, the iconic orb atop Reunion Tower still graces the skyline, and the century-old Neiman Marcus flagship store continues to be a bastion of fashion along Main Street. But amid the jumble of shimmering skyscrapers, a monumental transformation is taking place: Downtown Dallas is experiencing a major boom. For the first time in nearly three decades, the area is showing renewed signs of life: new highrises are being constructed and abandoned buildings are being repurposed— not only to house offices— but also to accommodate upscale residences and hotels. “At present, there are over 90 current developments announced or under construction in Downtown’s 15 districts,” says John Crawford, CEO and President of Downtown Dallas, Inc. “Residential growth is off the charts (over 5,500 units announced or under construction), and our residential occupancy rates are over 94 percent.” In the past decade, Downtown Dallas has become a hot place to live—the population has grown from 200 to 8,000 residents inside its urban core, notwithstanding the more than 40,000 people residing within all fifteen districts. It’s not only apartments that are going up at a record rate; there’s

also a demand for more hotels to support the area’s growing tourism sector—which according to the Dallas Convention & Visitors Bureau, accounts for over 24 million visitors each year. Dallas led the country in hotel projects in 2015— a dozen of which were constructed in downtown’s central core. Among the fresh crop is a 326room Westin— which debuted in March as part of an adaptive re-use project in the 1960s-era One Main Place building. Opening inside the historic Mercantile Commerce tower is a new dual-brand Marriott, featuring a Residence Inn and boutique AC Hotel. And developers are also breathing new life into the long-abandoned Statler Hilton, a hotel which was one of the most glamorous of its time when it opened in 1956. When it reopens next year, the 19-story, mid-century structure will feature guest rooms and apartments as well as offices, shops, restaurants and a rooftop pool overlooking the skyline. And the lineup of options is still growing: during the next two years, seventeen more are projected to open— amounting to a total number of 54 hotels, with roughly 12,000 rooms up for grabs— in the downtown area alone. The expansion of hotel rooms is certainly boosting Dallas’ appeal as one of the top convention destinations in the nation, but the

area’s abundance of attractions— particularly in Downtown—is proving to be a big draw for leisure travelers, too. Indeed, the downtown of today is a far cry from the desolate ghost town it was just a decade ago. “Today there is new energy on the streets day and night,” adds Crawford. “There are over 180 places to shop downtown with more on the way, and almost every new project or redevelopment has some component of retail on the ground floor.” Downtown’s food scene is also blossoming with over 420 bars and restaurants, 50 of which opened up in 2015. And when it comes to attractions, Downtown Dallas boasts some of the best, if not the biggest in the country— and a prime example is the 68-acre Dallas Arts District, the largest urban art zone of its kind in the nation. Not only does the District offer several superb performance venues, including the nationally acclaimed Morton H. Meyerson Symphony Center— and three world-class museums (the Dallas Museum of Art, the Nasher Sculpture Center and the Crow Collection of Asian Art)— it also houses one of the world’s largest collections of Pritzker Prize-winning buildings in one contiguous location. Just down the road in Victory Park lies another breathtaking

“WE ARE A VERY YOUNG CITY AND WE HAVE ONLY JUST BEGUN.”

masterpiece— the Perot Museum of Nature and Science, which was designed by Pritzker Prize-winning architect Thom Mayne. The $185 million museum, featuring five floors, was funded solely from donations, including a $60 million gift from the family of billionaire businessman and former presidential candidate Ross Perot. Downtown’s long-ignored east side is experiencing a rebirth as well, with a recent $65-million makeover to the 75-year-old Dallas Farmers Market. And with it has come a slew of new vendors and a massive 26,000-square-foot food hall offering everything from artisanal food stalls to restaurants and retail shops. Speaking of delicious happenings, the city-owned Omni Dallas Hotel in the Convention District has recently transformed a vacant corner of its property into a culinary destination by bringing in four new eateries: Biergarten, Coal Vines, Black Ship Little Katana, and Café Herrera. “The four new restaurants are Dallas icons that locals love,” says Ed Netzhammer, Regional Vice President of the Omni Dallas

Hotel. “Visitors always ask our concierge, ‘Where do the locals go?’ Our answer now is right outside our front door.” But it’s not only hotel guests who are digging into the Omni’s array of dining options (which also include Texas Spice, Bob’s Steak & Chop House and the Owners Box sports bar) – the restaurants are also becoming a huge draw for area workers and residents. “In fact, the hotel is now a destination where locals plan staycations,” says Netzhammer. “They stay at the hotel, dine in our seven restaurants, watch their team in the Owners Box, relax in the spa and enjoy our pool. Many end up never leaving the hotel.” And as if that’s not enough, Downtown is now home to an amazing community gathering place —the Klyde Warren Park— a 5-acre deck park perched on top of a recessed freeway. In addition to making the area more pedestrian friendly, the park generated millions in economic benefits for the city. Along with allocated spaces for kids, dogs and lawn games, the park offers year-round programming, ranging from

daily fitness sessions to musical performances and seasonal film screenings. However, these changes haven’t happened overnight— it has taken decades of planning and billions of dollars in investment. “Several factors have made the revitalization process possible, including a renewed interest in Downtowns, and the live, work and play concept,” says Crawford. “Public private partnerships also play a huge role; many of the large-scale redevelopments and adaptive reuse projects we see happening in Downtown Dallas would not be possible without all parties involved, including the City of Dallas, private developers and everyone in between.” One of the major players leading the way in Downtown’s rebirth is developer Tim Headington of Headington Oil Co. LLC. In the last twelve years, Headington has spent more than $150 million to transform part of Main Street into a premier shopping and dining destination. One of Headington’s most prized accomplishments to date

The trolly makes its way through Downtown Dallas.

Meanwhile, across the street — adjacent to Tony Tasset’s famed Eye sculpture —Headington’s company is finishing the final touches on a 45,000-square-foot, multilevel structure that will house Dallas luxury retailer Forty Five Ten in the fall. And over in the Arts District, Dallas developer Craig Hall, chairman and CEO of Hall Financial Group, has been busy working on the Hall Arts development, a three-tower, $500-million complex occupying a prime 5-acre slice of land near the AT&T Performing Arts Center. “We first purchased our land in the Dallas Arts District in 1995 with the knowledge that there were plans for performing arts buildings in the neighborhood,”

says Hall. “It took years to raise the money, but eventually the buildings that are now known as the Wyly Theater and Winspear Opera House were built. We knew we were early, and we waited patiently until the time came for us to begin building.” Already open is the first phase of the development, KPMG Plaza, an 18-story office tower that was more than 70 percent leased before it opened in the summer of 2015. In addition to offices, the tower includes 20,000 square feet of retail space and houses award-winning chef Stephan Pyles’ new flagship restaurant, Flora Street Cafe. “Our second and third phases are in-design and in-process,” says Hall. “We hope to be starting the

second phase, which will include a luxury residential tower and boutique hotel, late this year or early next year, though we are more concerned about getting the details exactly right than the absolute timing. Our goal is to do everything we can to bring more excitement and energy to the Arts District.” Dallas is no longer simply a place to pass through on business; it’s now becoming an exciting destination worthy of a visit on its own. And there’s still much more to come. “In the coming decade as Downtown continues to evolve, expect to see more retail and services as well as new schools and grocery stores, says Crawford. “Infill projects are starting to

transpire, as we are almost out of old empty office buildings to convert to other uses. We will begin to see a lot of new construction likely taking the place of surface parking lots, and the skyline will also be very different in ten years. We are a very young city, and we have only just begun.”

There’s very little that could be considered orthodox when it comes to Joe Ely. These days the outgoing State Musician of Texas is off on an exciting new turn, adding a few tantalizing twists along the way. BY DAVE MUSCARI

he first time I saw Joe Ely perform was in the 70s at a club in Minneapolis. The room was overflowing with college-age kids, much like me, many from the nearby University of Minnesota. A few nights before, James Brown had smoked a similarly packed house with the kind of supercharged funk-fest you’d expect from The Godfather of Soul in his prime. But Ely was a different act altogether. He possessed a unique ability to stir up a crowd with a Buddy Holly-styled roadhouse barnburner followed by a wistful ballad that could silence the same room and leave his audience hanging on every word. The evening proved a musical education, I suspect, for most of those in attendance that would

likely be remembered fondly for years. Fortunately, some things are slow to change. Just as he did in the early days, Ely still cuts an uncommon figure in his cowboy uniform: denim jeans and western-cut shirt, accented by a faded red bandana and worn boots. He’s a little on the inconspicuous side. If you’re not paying attention you may miss him, sitting unassumingly at the end of a dark bar while a Hank Williams tune crackles on the jukebox. “There’s an earthy roguish, very manly quality to Joe Ely’s voice,” says musician Sara Hickman, who grew up in Houston and is an avowed fan. “He’s a modern rock and roll cowboy with a dash of GQ.” The lines around Ely’s eyes

read a bit like a roadmap of the southwestern states he’s travelled for decades. His songs take you to the places he writes about so eloquently. And even though you’ve never been to “Mockingbird Hill,” “Cloister Mountain” or “Silver City,” after listening you’d probably swear you had. “Letter to Laredo” and “She Never Spoke Spanish to Me” are every bit as poetic as Leonard Cohen chestnuts “Suzanne” and “Bird on a Wire,” but with Ely’s definitive edge. He epitomizes what might be considered old school Country, with a thick slice of “high & lonesome” on the side. And his best songs, they ring as sure today as they did when he wrote them years ago. Ely’s image is that of a

troubadour. In fact, it seems he’s hardly ever been off the road since he started performing. Old friend Bruce Springsteen has been connected to Ely for many years. Rarified rock and roll air for certain, but something the road-tested, 69-year-old Texas Country icon routinely shrugs off. Small wonder for a guy who’s opened for The Rolling Stones, and consistently shared stages and studios with established stars including The Boss, John Hiatt and Tom Petty, as well as younger artists such as Uncle Tupelo and Reckless Kelly. When Springsteen played Texas in May 2014, he eagerly welcomed his ol’ Texas buddy onstage to harmonize a pair of flame-thrower encores in “Great Balls of Fire” and “Lucille.” And why not: Ely’s been extraordinarily adroit at keeping a boot in a number of musical camps. His 1978 album, Honky Tonk Masquerade, made it into the hands of the late Joe Strummer of famed English punk band, The Clash. The pair became friends, and played on the same concert bills. When the band cut their landmark Combat Rock album, Ely was invited along to lend background vocals (in Tex-Mex Spanish) to one of the group’s most memorable tunes, “Should I Stay or Should I Go?” Years later Strummer planned

to record with Ely’s band. However, he died suddenly of cardiac arrest in 2002 at age 50 before anything materialized. Ely’s said it’s one of his life’s greatest regrets. Lubbock’s a Texas original; a breeding ground for country music, which locals discuss in damn near spiritual tones. Beyond the city’s most famous son, Buddy Holly, it’s been a proving ground for Waylon Jennings, Mac Davis, Delbert McClinton, Angela Strehli and more. Echoes of the past can be heard baked into Ely’s music, along with influences of folk contemporaries such as Bob Dylan, and fellow Texans including the late Guy Clark (who passed away this year) and Townes Van Zandt. Born in Amarillo, Ely’s family moved to Lubbock when young Joe was a boy. His dad died a couple of years later. Family issues forced Ely and his brother to leave the area to live with relatives for a spell. When they returned to town as teenagers, Ely dropped out of school to focus on music. He decided to take his show on the road, traveling to California, then to New York and later to Europe, where he worked with a theatrical company. “I first met Joey Ely (as he was called back then) in ‘69 at a little club in Lubbock,” says Bob Livingston, a founding member of the legendary Lost Gonzo

Band, which backed Jerry Jeff Walker and Dallas native Michael Martin Murphey in the 1970s. He played in a sort of a “dreamy, detached way,” recalls Livingston. Ely would fidget, he says, look uncomfortable and rarely speak between songs. “He just looked down a lot and mumbled. But he sang really soulfully and chose obscure songs (at least ones I’d never heard before),” he remembers fondly. For Livingston, a key figure in the 70s outlaw movement in Texas and a globetrotting ambassador of American music, the experience proved transforming. “His unusual and blasé performance had a profound affect on me,” he says. “… I basically reinvented my musical direction in the model of Joey Ely.” In 1972 Ely hooked up with friends Jimmie Dale Gilmore and Butch Hancock. They would soon introduce the world to The Flatlanders. “Jimmie was like a well of country music,” says Ely. “He knew everything about it. And Butch was from the folk world. I was kind of the rock and roll guy…. We hit it off and started playing a lot together. That opened up a whole new world I had never known existed.” The trio’s first recording together included 14 basic tracks laid off to a reel-to-reel in an Odessa studio. Aficionados have gone as far to

music executive asked if there were other Texas groups to consider, Livingston knew just what to do. “I gave him a demo Ely had recorded in Lubbock,” he recalls. “They were so blown away, they flew to Lubbock and caught Ely’s show.” The MCA mangers signed him on the spot. Eventually, Ely left Lubbock for good. With Austin as home base, he’s toured and recorded for years. Aside from his long running solo career, Ely’s also been an active member of a musical collective know as Los Super Seven. Since forming in the late 90s, the band’s included players such as the late Freddy Fender, plus David Hidalgo and Cesar Rosas of Los Lobos among many. Over the years the Grammywinning ensemble has morphed with each project, but managed to retain its distinctive vibe, thanks in no small part to its unique participants. “Joe has always been one-of-a-kind,” says

Maines. “He never tried to sound like anyone and no one sounds like him.” Big commercial success has been evasive, but it’s never seemed to bother Ely. That said, he has been on a bit of an impressive dash over the last few years. In May 2015 at the Texas State Capitol in Austin, Ely was named State Musician of Texas by the legislature. It’s a distinctive honor held in the past by Lone Star luminaries including Billy Gibbons of ZZ Top, Willie Nelson, Lyle Lovett

Ted Parker Jr.

call it the birth of American altcountry music. Without The Flatlander’s paving the genre’s road, it’s doubtful artists such as Ryan Adams, Lucinda Williams, Old 97’s and others would have ever gotten too far into gear. The band’s brilliant blend of folk, blues, country and Tex-Mex was simply unprecedented, as unique as it is enduring. Together, they’ve made some of the most memorable music to come out of Texas since Willie Nelson left Nashville and returned home to help kick-start the Austin scene with musicians such as Livingston, Murphey, Walker and others. In celebration of The Flatlanders’ 40 years together, in 2012 they finally released the recordings, known as The Odessa Tapes, on CD, DVD and, of course, vinyl. Ely returned to the road, but this time with his own group: the Joe Ely Band. One of the players was young Lloyd Maines, a talented steel guitarist who went on to produce for musicians including Ely and The Flatlanders as well as Texas Country mainstays Robert Earl Keen, Pat Green and The Dixie Chicks (his daughter, Natalie Maines, is the band’s lead singer). Maines won a Grammy in 2003 as producer of the Chicks’ celebrated album, Home. “Our first gig was in Lubbock at the Main Street Saloon,” remembers Maines, who estimates he’s played over 2,000 shows with Ely since 1973. “Joe called me and said he wanted to play Friday and Saturday to try and make enough money to move to Austin for a while.” Maines says things went so well for Ely’s new quartet, they regrouped and played the next weekend. “That evolved into a band that would have an important impact for many years. Still does. And the rest is history.” Around the same time, The Lost Gonzo Band had been recording for MCA Records. When the label’s top country

and others. As the state’s designated musician in 2010, Sara Hickman has a special appreciation for the role. “He’s unique, he’s quirky, he has the clarity and precise, getto-the-point writing of a Lubbock songwriter. He sings about Texas, love and people in a way that’s never corny, but gritty and real,” says Hickman. The consequence of the official designation wasn’t lost on Ely. “I am, of course, honored and surprised,” he added. “I’ve lived in this state all of my life, and Texas has been the source of a lot of inspiration for my songs.” Ely released Panhandle Rambler in 2015 to a predictably enthusiastic reception by music critics and longtime fans. Count Linda Ronstadt among them. “I’ve been playing it the last few days,” she says. “Joe’s stories are like watching a movie in Cinemascope and Technicolor. He did a perfect job....” This is album number fourteen for Ely; it features a dozen songs ranging from introspective sketches of a windblown life on the road to a lovely paean for his wife. “You Saved Me” was written, he says, while hopelessly stuck in a cramped motel room during an ice storm in small town Texas

after playing a benefit. “Here’s to the Weary” has special meaning to Ely, particularly as it relates to his early hometown musical heroes. Panhandle Rambler also features covers of colleagues’ tunes: Guy Clark’s classic “Magdalene” and another from Butch Hancock, “When the Nights Are Cold.” “I had a great time working on the record,” says Ely. “I wish they all were that much fun.” The ol’ Texas road warrior is back on the road. Already this year he’s played nearly every major market in Texas (some twice), as well as crisscrossing the U.S. with shows in Washington, D.C., Cleveland, Kansas City, Miami, Chicago and more. Rock and roll may be a young man’s game, but don’t tell Joe Ely. He continues to travel America’s highways and back roads, on his way to the next gig, across a vast landscape filled with yet-tobe-told stories. You just have to know where to look for them.

Hidden Land Vacationing in Cuba could soon become a reality. Here’s what Americans need to know. BY THOMAS FORRISTER & ANGELA YOUNGMAN

44

A

mysterious country that has been closed to Americans for over 50 years could soon be open for travel. In a historic move, President Barack Obama has opened diplomatic relations and begun loosening travel sanctions for Americans visiting Cuba. What’s more, the U.S. Department of Transportation recently awarded six domestic airlines to begin scheduled air service to Cuba from five U.S. cities. While service to Havana is currently off limits, Cuba’s nine international airports in other cities will be open for business. Most authorized airlines plan to begin their services in the fall and winter of 2016 and 2017, with tickets likely available much sooner. But don’t rush to buy a plane ticket – you could find yourself prevented from boarding the plane. You need permission from the U.S. and Cuba to travel. Each approved

airline must follow the laws and regulations still in place regarding travel from the U.S. to Cuba. Always check with the carrier directly if you’re thinking of buying a ticket. The six approved carriers are: American Airlines, Frontier Airlines, JetBlue Airways, Silver Airways, Southwest Airlines and Sun Country Airlines. So far, travelers will be able to fly to one of Cuba’s nine approved airports from Miami, Fort Lauderdale, Chicago, Minneapolis/St. Paul and Philadelphia. 90 daily round trips are approved, with more to come if Havana flights are later allowed. The decision on flights to Havana will be announced later this summer. So, what are the travel limitations, and how should you navigate them? General tourism to Cuba is strictly prohibited; and travel is limited to specific categories with individual and group tourism still banned. The

outcome of the next presidential election may determine how fast this situation changes – whether travel restrictions will continue to loosen, or whether the airline services will cease due to the current non-legally-binding arrangement. Currently, travel is limited to 12 categories, including religious, educational, journalistic or cultural visits. Family visits for Cuban Americans are easier to arrange, but you have to use agencies approved by the U.S. Treasury. Every U.S. citizen needs a visa to enter Cuba. Bringing back $400 worth of Cuban goods is allowed as long as it is for personal use, with just $100 accounting for alcohol and tobacco. Travelers from the U.S. should also pay for expenses while on the island in cash, using the Cuban peso – while U.S. debit and credit cards are legal, they do not yet function in Cuba. Visitors must also keep records and travel

receipts for up to five years after returning home. Despite all of the restrictions, many Americans are optimistic. A U.S. traveler to Cuba no longer needs a specialized license from the government to go, as long as the traveler fits one of the 12 categories – one only needs a general license, which is not a piece of paper, but more or less an honor-based presumption. And with a wide array of categories, travelers are happy to schedule educational and cultural excursions – meeting with Cuban people, visiting historic museums and exhibitions – as main events in their itineraries. However, it is still tricky to travel to Cuba as an individual, so your best option for traveling legally is to go as part of a small guided trip tailored to your interests – authorized travel agencies can help you navigate the limitations smoothly and arrange peopleto-people interactions so that

you need only relax and enjoy your stay. So what can you expect to find when visiting Cuba? This is a land that to some extent is still in a time warp. The pace of life is much slower. Technology and property development have only just begun to affect the Cuban landscape. You can take private tours of Havana in a 1950s Chevy without feeling out of place. Only 90 miles from Miami, Cuba was once the playground for the rich and famous, and U.S. citizens swarmed to the island. Organized crime even set its sights on the casinos and hotels, with the likes of leading mob bosses Meyer Lansky and Lucky Luciano. Havana was a haven for mobsters under the Batista regime, which profited from the extensive fees the crime lords paid for the privilege of running casinos. The American Mafia’s infamous Havana Conference in 1946 ran under the cover of

a gala party with singer Frank Sinatra as its entertainment. Others in attendance included Sam Giancana, Albert “The Mad Hatter” Anastasia, Carlos Marcello and the Fischetti brothers, who delivered a suitcase containing $2 million in cash to Luciano. In 1959, when then Prime Minister Fidel Castro gained power, Castro abolished gambling in Cuba and sent the Mafia scrambling. Now, among other possibilities should the U.S. and Cuba relations succeed, Cuba could see a return to U.S. executive-owned casinos – all legal, of course! “The most beautiful land human eyes have ever seen,” is how Christopher Columbus described Cuba when landing on its shores for the first time in 1492. Little has changed since then. Many of the beaches and mountainous, forested interiors would be instantly recognizable. This

“Cuba is a land of contrasts.” is a land of incredible beauty, of crystal clear waters and sun drenched beaches, of massive green rivers winding through forests to quiet beaches covered in sand of every color from pale pink to sparkling black. This is a tropical paradise perfect for romantic celebrations, relaxing vacations, as well as adventurous exploration. Cuba is a land of contrasts, from the tropical rain forest of the Sagua-Barocoa Mountains to the Zapata Peninsula, which is the largest wetland in the Antilles. The Cays house the second largest coral reef in the world, and at Cayo Largo del Sur, one of the most stunning sights of the natural world can be seen when hundreds of turtles come ashore to lay their eggs. There are miles of shimmering beaches protected by coral reefs. At night, the historic cities and towns of Cuba come

alive with music and dance. There are clubs, cabarets and street side salsas. Cuba’s capital city, Havana, is the largest city in the Caribbean, possessing a stunning historic neighborhood of Vieja Habana complete with castles, cathedrals and mansions. Numerous resorts can be found mainly within the Varadero, Jardines del Rey and Herradua Keys areas. Most hotels are owned by the Cuban government, or by overseas businesses such as Spanish resort groups. Located on a long narrow peninsula stretching out into the Caribbean, Varadero has been attracting visitors (including Al Capone!) since the 1870s. The soft, white sandy beaches are fringed with palm trees, and the azure blue sea perfect for scuba diving into stalagmite caves. Royal Service Paradisus Varadero is one of the most

luxurious hotels in the area. The stylish Hispanic architecture has its own special charm, with its canopy-edged beds and cream-and-brown décor with subtle splashes of color creating an oasis of tranquility. Choose the Royal Service option for the services of a personal butler and a private pool. When dining, guests are spoiled for choice since the restaurants cook up a plethora of A la Carte cuisines from Cuban to Italian, Mexican to Japanese. Sited directly opposite the expansive Varadero beach, the Iberostar Varadero is characterized by low-slung, tropical Cuban-styled buildings. The bright sunny interior décor in yellows, apricots and terracottas reflect the lively Caribbean style. Take a dance class; try your skills at archery, horseback riding, waterskiing or golf. Dine A la Carte on gourmet food, sample Cuban

delicacies, sushi, burgers or dishes from around the world. At night, enjoy the music of live bands, dance in the disco or enjoy a spectacular show or two. Over on Cuba’s North Coast, the Jardines del Rey archipelago is the site of the Meliá Buenavista. An ecofriendly, adults-only resort, it offers total luxury, impeccable service and exclusivity. Even the three beaches are exclusive to the resort. Each elegant suite is set within pretty, two story bungalows built on stilts with views over the beach, garden or pools. Paintings and prints by prestigious Cuban artist, Zaida del Rio, adorn the walls of the Hispanic-styled buildings. The crystalline waters and sparkling white beach of the Cayo Ensenachos, part of the Herradua Keys, are among the most beautiful in Cuba. These are quiet, uncrowded
