ummertime always sizzles in Dallas and surrounding areas. While it may be hot outside, within the pages of this new edition of Dallas Hotel Magazine, you’ll find some very cool ideas to take full advantage of this favorite season in North Texas. Our cover says it all: 1967 was known as the Summer of Love. And it endures to this day. Now, 50 years later, we take a nostalgic look back and a peek forward at how the reverberations of that summer of seismic shift in Dallas — and all over the world — so many years ago, continues to this day. Our Fab Fashion feature juxtaposes the 60s look with what’s trending now at local stores. You’ll be surprised at how the fashion world circles back in time. John, Paul, George and Ringo, collectively known as The Beatles, will forever be inextricably linked to the era.

We’ll take you across the River Mersey to jolly old Liverpool for a sneak preview of the city’s annual International Beatleweek Festival in the Fab Four’s hometown. If you’ve never seen the Texas Beatles tribute band Hard Night’s Day perform, you’re missing out. They’ve been a Dallas staple for over two decades. We’ll introduce you to some of the guys in the band, and learn their special passion for what they do and why they do it. Groovy. Get out the smart phone and fill up your calendar with a tantalizing variety of fall activities. We recently expanded “The Scene” to about 80 choice events each month. In it, you’ll find a comprehensive rundown of concerts, performance, theater, art exhibits, unique festivals and much more. Plus, check out our complete listing of the area’s sports schedules — it’s among the best in the U.S. We also

give you the lowdown on a wide variety of restaurants, bountiful shopping, trendy spas and more. And, as always, enjoy this new edition of Dallas Hotel Magazine, with our compliments. It’s the “definitive guide for discerning visitors to Big D.”

MEET THE BEATLES BY ANGELA YOUNGMAN

T

he year was 1967, and it was the Summer of Love in San Francisco. Hundreds of thousands of flower children gathered in Haight-Ashbury, and in cities all over the country. In London, similarly themed gatherings took place in Tottenham Court Road where experimental groups like Pink Floyd played, and at Speakers’ Corner, beat poet Allen Ginsberg spoke at a Legalize Pot rally. It was also the year a seminal pop album was released by one of the most iconic music groups the world has ever kown. Fifty years ago, The Beatles released “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band,” containing songs such as “With a Little Help From My Friends” and “Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds.” The music world gasped. This was a visionary, themed collection of songs wrapped in musical experimentation, which included everything from Indian instruments to crescendos from a 40-piece orchestra, never heard in the context of pop. The Beatles already dominated the music charts. This was the era of the Merseybeat, when the Liverpool-born band was producing hit-after-hit. “Sgt.

“[SGT. PEPPER IS] A HISTORIC DEPARTURE IN THE PROGRESS OF MUSIC.” - Time Magazine

Pepper” was released on June 1, 1967 and was an immediate success, spending 15 consecutive weeks at number one on the American charts. Time Magazine hailed it as “a historic departure in the progress of music.” The following year, “Sgt. Pepper” won four Grammy Awards as well as Album of the Year, marking the very first time a rock album had done so. Not surprisingly, half a century later, Liverpool is celebrating the occasion in grand style with the Summer of Love Music Festival in the city where Beatlemania still rules. Almost every street in the city carries

memories of the Fab Four, for it was here that John, Paul, George and Ringo were born and raised. This northern English city is a busy port, with its own very distinct character, facing the river Mersey and the gray waters of the Atlantic Ocean. The Mersey Ferry crosses the river regularly, just it did when the famous mop tops played concerts on one of the boats. Today, you can take a combined tour of Mendips and 20 Forthlin Road, the childhood homes of John Lennon and Paul McCartney, respectively, where they wrote and rehearsed many of the early songs that made the Beatles famous. Walking through the rooms of these homes is like stepping back in time – almost as if the Beatles had never left. Walk just a few more minutes and you’ll arrive at Strawberry Field, the site of a former Salvation Army children’s home well-known to Lennon. As a child, he used to attend summer garden parties here. A replica of the red gate he would walk through is one of the most photographed places in Liverpool. It was this site that in-

spired him to write the classic, “Strawberry Fields Forever.” Travel around the city and other images can be found – Penny Lane where McCartney and Lennon caught buses into town; a statue of Eleanor Rigby sculpted by another famous ‘60s performer, Tommy Steele; and, of course, statues of the Beatles. A Magical Mystery Tour bus travels to all of the main sites, and passengers stop off at each destination to take photographs. Then there is the infamous Cavern Club. Take a look at Lennon’s statue slouching against the wall before passing through the entrance and down the stairs for an absolute must-see on the any Beatles fan’s bucket list. Check out the mural celebrating all the bands that played here during that incredible period: Gerry and The Pacemakers, Billy J. Kramer & The Dakotas, The Shadows, Stevie Wonder and – right in the center – The Beatles. The Fab Four played the Cavern Club 292 times in the late ‘50s and early ‘60s, developing a sound that would eventually lead them to international stardom. D A L L A S H OT E L M A G A Z I N E

This is also the one of the sites used by the annual International Beatleweek Festival each August. It features 70 bands from 20 countries, including bands such as The Original Quarrymen, The Bootleg Beatles, Cavern Club Beatles and Hamburg Beat. Another of the Festival’s venues has special links to the Beatles – the local church of St. Peter, Woolton, in Liverpool. The church was where John Lennon was introduced to Paul McCartney at the Woolton Garden Fete on July 6, 1957. (John Lennon had actually been playing at the fete as part of The Quarrymen.) Out on Pier Head, in the old Albert Dock, is another essential part of the Beatles legacy: “The Beatles Story.” Sit down for a virtual drum lesson, overseen by none other than Ringo Starr. Admire John Lennon’s piano, his glasses and scrawled sheets of paper containing the beginnings of some of the greatest songs ever written. Inspect George Harrison’s first guitar. And watch video interviews with McCartney, Starr, George’s widow Olivia Harrison and Yoko Ono as they recall their own memories along with the countless photographs of screaming crowds about the unique pressures the young musicians experienced. New on display this year are replicas of the costumes worn on the “Sgt. Pepper” album cover. Another rare display item is an alternative print of the album cover. It’s a little-known fact that Sir Peter Blake shot several alternative covers to the album, which were discard in favor of the famous one. This alternative incorporates various alterations to the familiar collage background, as well as the positions of each Beatle. For the ultimate in Beatlemania immersion, there’s the Hard Day’s Night Hotel, named after the band’s first motion picture. Owners Bill Heckle and Dave Jones, who also own the Cavern Club and Cavern City

Tours, live and breathe all things Beatles, having spoken to them, their families, friends and people who have worked with the band over the years. Although none of the Beatles have stayed at the hotel, Ringo’s son, Jason Starkey, and his grandchildren stepped inside a couple of years ago. Other visitors include McCartney’s brother, Mike McGear; May Pang, Lennon’s former assistant and infamous “lost weekend” girlfriend; as well as his younger half-sister, Julia Baird. Wherever you go in the hotel, the story of the Fab Four is outlined in words, art and memorabilia. This is a Beatles world where you can sleep in themed rooms, with original Beatles related artwork on the walls

created by “the World’s Greatest Beatles Artist,” Shannon McDonald. No two rooms are the same; each tells the unique story of the world’s most-famous rock-and-roll band, from birth to the present day. To complete the visit, Beatles fans can dine in the restaurant amid a plethora of memorabilia. Blakes Restaurant is named in honor of Sir Peter Blake, the pop artist who created the iconic artwork for the “Sgt. Pepper” album cover. All the walls are covered in stunning Beatles artwork. Also on display are 60 original items relating to the artist’s distinctive work on the “Sgt. Pepper” cover. What more could any Beatles fan want? This is pure Beatles heaven.

LIVERPOOL GOES LOCAL

It’s been...

A HARD NIGHT’S DAY Tributes are all the rage. Particularly when it comes to the kings of the British Invasion: The Beatles. One Dallas band has kept their fan flame burning brightly for years with little sign of slowing down. Meet these Beatles, and feel the passion that’s driven their success for two decades.

O

n any given night in North Texas, you can likely catch a band paying homage to rock idols. One of the best is known as Hard Night’s Day, a clever rearrangement of the name of the Fab Four’s 1964 motion-picture smash, “Hard Day’s Night.” The Dallas-based Beatles tribute group has played the mop tops’ enduring pop tunes for 20 years. They enjoy a cross-generational fan base following them to gigs at area bars and clubs, as well as a variety of local festivals. Five talented players sport vintage instruments and are often in period garb, remaining true to a musical mission – spreading the gospel of John, Paul, George and Ringo. Guitarist Bob Cummins is an original member, a 23-year veteran of the band, and Doug Cox (Lone Star Ringo) is the drummer. Hard Night’s Day began playing back in 1994 at Dallas’ Club Dada in Deep Ellum, playing there every Friday for over a decade. Ironically, the Dallas group has lasted longer than the Fab Four’s career together ever did. For some fans, it seems like they think the guys are The Beatles. “Over the years, I’ve heard them say, ‘Be-

fore I started to come see you guys, I never really liked The Beatles.’ Younger fans will even ask for autographs.” Is there a preferred Beatle, or favorite era? It varies: Cox is an avowed George Harrison fan. And Cummins likes the dynamic of the group’s music from 1964-66. “From ‘A Hard Day’s Night’ through ‘Help,’ I love the interaction of the acoustic and electric guitars — great harmonies and mind-blowing songwriting,” he says. “They were mature beyond their years.” He also believes that his band should always stay true to the songs. “The instruments we perform with are not simply for looks,” he says. And while he admits that a vintage Gretsch guitar here, and a Hofner bass there definitely help set a visual tone, they are critical elements in accurately reproducing The Beatles’ music. “You must have the right gear to create an authentic sound,” he reasons. “Nobody really sounds like The Beatles,” adds Cox, “but if you work hard at the sound and vocal tone you can feel pretty successful after a good show.”

By Dave Muscari For the guys in Hard Night’s Day, seeing the real band members perform — that’s always a treat. “I saw Paul McCartney play the Superdome in New Orleans back in 1993,” Cummins remembers. “After, the show caught Alex Chilton [‘Big Star,’ ‘The Box Tops’] at a little blues club not far away. Best evening of music ever.” Cox says he’s seen McCartney in concert, and Ringo’s All-Starr Band “numerous times” over the years. “I even made eye contact with [legendary Beatles producer] George Martin at a McCartney show once as he was sitting by the mixing console out front.” Is there an expiration date on Hard Night’s Day? Maybe not: Cummins says his son is currently playing in a different Beatles tribute called Run for Your Life. “When it’s time for us to enter The Beatles

retirement home, we’ll just be replaced by younger versions.”

ashion repeats itself again, but this time with an even flashier approach to coveted ‘60s classics. Effervescent and now refined, fashion awakens former trends in a new wave of styles fresh for the summer. Conservative silhouettes have pressed rewind, while traces of mod on minimalist designs pave way for new forms. What was then is instantly now as ‘60s trends channel the ultimate comeback with area retailers revving up for what will be an ultra-haute summer. Undoubtedly, the heat is on in high fashion, bursting with vibrant florals, graphic prints and luxe fabrics – blooming ever so luminously into what we are coining “a summer of love.” ‘60s fashion was youthful: Oversized collars, bows and patterns decorated garments, all inspired by current movements within pop and modern art. Enthusiasts engaged in fashionable play, as hemlines shortened and liberated confidence became the new black. Alluring splashes of color popped throughout, making the

‘60s a time of self-expression, and indisputably, an exploration through style. In a fast-forward progression down today’s catwalk, the resurgence of the ‘60s takes a new spin. Bold and even bolder is the norm, as vivid creativity through fashion becomes a way of life. With a casual yet transformative nod to the past, brands such as Alice + Olivia, Trina Turk and Delpozo lead the pack with designs inspiring pattern play, simplistic structure and the ease of elegance. Casual strolls along Highland Park Village, Bishop Arts and other shopping centers reveal fashion’s flashback, with retail displays hinting at summer’s groovy new style. What was old is now new, redefined and artfully reimagined with a trip down memory lane that’s as blissful as it is chic. Fashion then is now; with ‘60s styles infusing hope and youthful exuberance into our wardrobes once again.

A noted staple of Bishop Arts, this “Best of Big D” store stays ultra trendsavvy with its decorative twist to bohemian glam. Ushering in the spirit of the 60s, customers can now don shapeless dresses and off-the-sholder blouses stirred straight from the era. Labels such as K.A.S. SummeR SUDS BY TYLER HICKS FIND REFUGE FROM THE TEXAS HEAT IN DALLAS’ HOPPIN’ BREWERY SCENE When French explorer Jean Monduel landed on the banks of the Trinity River around 1850, he and his crew of Swiss and Belgian settlers had one goal in mind: Create the perfect society. That meant delicious beer – and lots of it. They founded their first local brewery, and the rest is hops history. Over 150 years after Monduel tapped his first barrel, a city council decision gave beer artisans the freedom to operate within city limits. Now that the frothy floodgates have finally flown open, artisans are following in Monduel’s footsteps, and Dallas denizens have plenty of local breweries and pubs to choose from. Finding that beer oasis may not be as hard as it was in 1950, but nevertheless, we have a few suggestions to point you in the right direction.

COMMUNITY BEER COMPANY Community Beer Co. founder Kevin Carr is on a mission to represent the Dallas community as best as he can. That’s why his brewery hosts open houses every Saturday and partners with local charities. But never fear, the focus is still on beer. Carr’s Co. has its own yeast lab, and brews up unique concotions like its Barrel-Aged Legion – a Russion stout – and the seasonal Funnel Cake ale. State Fair season just got even more fun and even less healthy.

TEXAS ALE PROJECT T.A.P. takes pride in a couple of things: Its multi-step mashing process, and the fact that it’s the first brewery to be built from the ground up since the 1800s. What they should take special pride in, however, is their Big Lebowski-inspired White Russian Imperial Stout. Couple that with their live music events and expansive tours, and you have a pretty great experience, dude.

GEAR UP

for glorious

GASTROPUBS A RUNDOWN OF DALLAS WATERING HOLES WOULD BE INCOMPLETE WITHOUT MENTIONING SOME OF THE CITY’S SIGNATURE GASTROPUBS. AFTER ALL, YOU’LL NEED SOMETHING TO COMPLEMENT YOUR BEER. MEDDLESOME MOTH Dallas restauranteur Shannon Wynne wanted to create “a real gastropub” like you’d find on the East or West Coast, so he made Meddlesome Moth. Come for the exemplary fish and chips, steak frites or award-winning brunch, but whatever you do, don’t leave without popping open one of 80 different craft beers or sampling one of the 40 on tap – be it a Belgian lambie or a local IPA.

VICTOR TANGOS This high-energy eatery offers tapas, cocktails and craft beer as far as the eye can see, and they’ve recently assumed a new leader. Popular Dallas chef Jeff Harris took over as head chef in March, and has already added his signature Texas flair to the menu with dishes like his roasted cauliflower with green mole, grapefruit and charred tortilla. Don’t worry, though: This Knox-Henderson mainstay will always offer its classically stylish cocktails.

PUBLIC SCHOOL 214 It may be summer, but when you see this restaurant’s menu, you’ll be yearning for a return to the classroom – as long as it’s the classroom-themed main room at PS 124, that is. This chef-driven gastropub offers diverse happy hour (or, to them, “recess”) treats, including signature cocktails, rotating selection of 24 craft beers and a menu that includes beer-battered cod and the house original Lakewood Temptress braised short ribs. Now there’s a class you won’t want to skip.

head spin with its wide selection of beers and vinyl records. The Off the Record crew keeps everything local: all of the 24 beers on tap are from Dallas, and many of the drinks on the menu are named after local artsits and DJs.

DEEP ELLUM BREWING COMPANY Similar to a certain French explorer, John Reardon looked at Dallas and saw an opportunity to make everything more magical with the power of beer. Deep Ellum Brewing Company is the result of his mission to mix up the status quo, and you’d be hard-prsesed to find a bar that doesn’t house the company’s signature Deep Ellum IPA. However, if you’re looking to mix it up like Reardon, give the Cherry Chocolate Stout a try. Cherry, chocolate and beer – now there’s a combo worth a

trek from France.

ON ROTATION Husband and wife Jacob and Lindsay Sloan had lofty goals when they opened their Portland-inspired brewpub two years ago. “A lot of people get into brewing to recreate a certain beer, but we got into it to create something we’d never tasted before,” Jacob says. Thus, the team stays true to their name, and constantly updates original creations, all while brewin’ up something new. That hasn’t stopped customers from picking a favorite, though – Jacob doesn’t think fans will every stop asking for the Jalepeno Saison.
