PUBLISHER’S NOTE

ISSUE 31: SUMMER 2018

WELCOME N

ever fails this time a year: Whenever I hear the Lovin’ Spoonful classic “Summer in the City,” I start looking for the sunscreen. My friends, hot weather is upon us. But summertime in Dallas is special: where daytime swelters, and the nightlife sizzles. Glorious patios are in full swing as sensational al fresco dining is the order of the day (and night). Plus pool scenes are snapping all over Dallas, while ice-cold margaritas abound. What a grand place to be!

Photo - Chip Richie

In this new edition of Dallas Hotel Magazine, our cover story features an exciting, up-andcoming superstar. If you’re like me — an avid fan of rhythm and blues — we have a treat. Meet Leon Bridges, the scorching Texas singer who has taken the music world by storm with his retro grooves and top-rated songs such as “Coming Home.” He has a great story, a hot new album and bright future! This summer, it’s the wetter, the better. With that in mind we offer some of the areas top options for splash time fun.

8

D A L L A S H OT E L M A G A Z I N E

From North Texas water parks to a list of yummy health-conscious cocktails served at area lounges, we’ve got the lowdown to help you cool down and beat the heat. On the cuisine scene, summer is a perfect time to sample the delicious selection of salads served in well-known restaurants around our area. If you’re staying in one of the area’s top hotels (and there are many), you’ll be interested in our feature about North Texas’ museumworthy art collections in rooms, lobbies and dining areas that distinctively transform spaces way beyond being simply a place to park luggage for a few nights. If you haven’t been to Dallas, allow me to introduce you to some of the region’s premiere entertainment zones. Finally, our Parting Shot is post-Memorial Day inspirational, as well as a salute to the military men and women who serve our country. The Scene is the best “who, what and where guide” available, like none other in DFW.

In fact, we have expanded it to include details on 90 great events per month to help fill up any social calendar with must-see concerts, fun-filled festivals, unique performances and more events around the area on nearly every night of the week. Check out our complete listing of the area’s sports schedules — the Texas Rangers are in full swing, our Dallas Cowboys pre-season transitions into regular season, college and high school football programs crank up — and we are full throttle with NASCAR events, FC Dallas soccer and much more. The sporting options in North Texas are among the best in the U.S. Plus we provide details on a wide array of fashionable restaurants, sensational shopping and more. And, as always, enjoy this new edition of Dallas Hotel Magazine, with our compliments. It’s the “definitive guide for discerning visitors to Big D.”

TEXAS RETRO

BY DAVID MUSCARI

Think of him purely as a throwback and you’ll miss the brilliance inherent in his eclectic performances. Leon Bridges is paving his own way up the charts with a nod to the past and a healthy dose of originality.

W

hat’s that saying: everything old is new again.

Such is the case with neo-soul singer, Leon Bridges. While he voice is certainly all his own, unavoidable comparisons to legendary performers such as Sam Cooke (“A Change Is Gonna Come,” “You Send Me,” “Wonderful World”) and Otis Redding “(Sittin’ On) The Dock of the Bay,” “Hard to Handle,” “Tramp”) are there. But make no mistake: The young crooner with the smooth-as-silk delivery is charting his own distinctive path with memorable work, including “Good Thing,” the artist’s lushly adventurous sophomore effort released in May. It is the highly anticipated follow-up to “Coming Home,” the Texas-based singer-songwriter’s 2015 debut album that sparked a rage with music critics as well as fans. Photo credit Shutterstock Premier

The delivery is sultry, perfect for slow dancing at midnight on a screened porch under a ceiling fan that’s gently stirring the thick summer air below. And it’s put him firmly on a very fast track.
