TWO x TWO for AIDS and Art benefiting amfAR, The Foundation for AIDS Research and the Dallas Museum of Art 2016

TWO x TWO for AIDS and Art is an annual black-tie gala and contemporary art auction held at the Richard Meier-designed Rachofsky House in Dallas, Texas. Thanks to the phenomenal support of the participating artists, dealers, sponsors and patrons, TWO x TWO has raised over $60 million in its seventeen-year history in support of amfAR’s AIDS research initiatives and the Dallas Museum of Art’s contemporary art acquisitions and exhibitions. TWO x TWO for AIDS and Art has evolved into a series of social events designed to highlight the efforts of amfAR and engaging the arts community in Dallas. TWO x TWO has become the largest fundraiser in the United States for amfAR. TWO x TWO is also the largest single annual source of funds for contemporary art acquisitions at the DMA, enabling the addition of over 220 major works of contemporary art to its permanent collection and helping to fund remarkable contemporary exhibitions. It is the extraordinary generosity, passion and dedication at the heart of this endeavor that ensure the continued success of TWO x TWO for AIDS and Art. twoxtwo.org

amfAR, founded in 1985, is dedicated to ending the global AIDS epidemic through innovative research. With the freedom and flexibility to respond quickly to emerging areas of scientific promise, amfAR plays a catalytic role in accelerating the pace of HIV/AIDS research and achieving real breakthroughs. Intensifying its research efforts, in 2014 amfAR launched the “Countdown to a Cure for HIV/AIDS,” a bold new initiative aimed at developing the scientific basis of a cure by 2020 and supported by a $100 million research investment strategy. The cornerstone of the strategy is the amfAR Institute for HIV Cure Research, established on World AIDS Day 2015 and based at the University of California, San Francisco. Since 1985, amfAR has invested more than $450 million in its programs and has awarded more than 3,300 grants to research teams worldwide. amfar.org

Established in 1903, the Dallas Museum of Art (DMA) ranks among the leading art institutions in the country and is distinguished by its innovative exhibitions and groundbreaking educational programs. At the heart of the Museum and its programs is its global collection, which encompasses more than 24,000 works and spans 5,000 years of history, representing a full range of world cultures. Located in the vibrant Arts District of downtown Dallas, the Museum welcomes more than half a million visitors annually and acts as a catalyst for community creativity, engaging people of all ages and backgrounds with a diverse spectrum of programming, from exhibitions and lectures to concerts, literary events, and dramatic and dance presentations. The DMA directs all proceeds from TWO x TWO to the Contemporary Art Acquisition Fund and exhibitions. dma.org

Dear Friends: Here is your chance to . Once again I have invited two friends to share in the fun of highlighting works in the 2016 auction: Gavin Delahunty, the Hoffman Family Senior Curator of Contemporary Art at the Dallas Museum of Art, and John Runyon, trusted art advisor and TWO x TWO ambassador. Gavin, John and I each have our own icon to indicate our picks and we encourage you to take an extra look at our selected works: Howard’s Hidden Gems, Gavin’s Curator’s Choice, and John’s Under the Radar will be noted online in the list below, in the printed auction catalogue and throughout the exhibition at The Rachofsky House. The bidding period begins on Monday, October 17, 2016, at 12 noon CST, and will close on Friday, October 21, at 12 noon CST. During that time period, the first bidder to place a bid at or above the full retail price wins the work. Bids placed prior to 12 noon on Monday will be considered simultaneous bids. If simultaneous and equal bids are placed, there will be a bid-off between the highest bidders until a maximum bid wins. If a work sells in the auction, it will be marked as “sold” during the following TWO x TWO events. For further details on how to place your bid, please email Meg Gratch, Auction Manager, at meg@rachofskyhouse.org. On Friday, October 21, at 12 noon CST, if the work is still available, it goes into the silent auction under standard TWO x TWO bidding procedures. All auction winners, including winners, must collect their items from the Rachofsky House on or before Tuesday, October 25, in accordance with the Conditions of Sale. Remember that you don’t have to be present at TWO x TWO to . Just look for the icons pictured above in our auction catalogue. Laura Owens TWO x TWO 2016 Honoree TWO x TWO for AIDS and Art takes great pleasure and pride in honoring Laura Owens for his generosity and commitment to the fight against AIDS.

Laura Owens (b. 1970, Euclid, Ohio) lives and works in Los Angeles. For the past two decades, Owens’s influential work has questioned the parameters and possibilities for making and viewing a painting today. She has continually shifted the terms of her practice, incorporating figuration, abstraction, digital techniques, and gestural mark making into multivalent compositions that confound expectations of pictorial space. Owens’s work has been presented in solo exhibitions at the CCA Wattis Institute for Contemporary Arts, San Francisco (2016); Secession, Vienna (2015); Kunstmuseum Bonn (2011); Kunsthalle Zürich (2006); Camden Arts Centre, London (2006); Milwaukee Art Museum (2003); Aspen Art Museum, Colorado (2003); Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles (2003); and Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, Boston (2001), among other venues. Owens’s art has also been featured in group exhibitions such as Forever Now, Museum of Modern Art, New York (2014); Whitney Biennial, Whitney Museum of American Art, New York (2014); The Spectacular of Vernacular, Walker Art Center, Minneapolis (2011); Undiscovered Country, Hammer Museum, Los Angeles (2004); Whitney Biennial (2004); Public Offerings, Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles (2001); Carnegie International, Carnegie Museum, Pittsburgh (1999); and Vertical Painting Show, P.S.1 Contemporary Art Center (1997). She is the founder of 356 S. Mission Rd., a contemporary art exhibition space in downtown Los Angeles. As part of TWO x TWO for AIDS and Art 2016, Laura Owens will receive the amfAR Award of Excellence for Artistic Contributions to the Fight Against AIDS in recognition of her generous support of amfAR’s programs. The award presentation will take place during a brunch on Sunday, October 23, hosted by Cindy and Howard Rachofsky at The Warehouse. TWO x TWO is honored to have Laura Owens as the featured artist of our 18th annual event. On behalf of amfAR and the Dallas Museum of Art, we extend heartfelt thanks to Laura, and to Gavin Brown, Sadie Coles, and Gisela Capitain, for their extraordinary support of this event. Past TWO x TWO for AIDS and Art honorees include renowned artists Ellsworth Kelly, Wade Guyton, Luc Tuymans, Richard Phillips, Mark Grotjahn, Christopher Wool, Peter Doig, Jim Hodges, Elizabeth Peyton, Tom Friedman, Cecily Brown, Julian Schnabel, April Gornik, Ed Ruscha, Joel Shapiro, and Robert Rauschenberg.

I look forward to experiencing this unique gala for the first time, and thank you for what you give and do to ensure the DMA’s role at the forefront of collecting institutions. The Art of Tequila 136

¡Salud! A toast for TWO x TWO!

Gabriel Orozco Special Edition Bottle

Casa Dragones, the world’s #1 sipping tequila, has donated 10 bottles of Casa Dragones Joven to be personalized as you wish, along with two very special limited edition bottles by artists Gabriel Orozco and Danh Vo.

Tequila Casa Dragones and renowned artist Gabriel Orozco collaborated on a special edition bottle in honor of his mid-career retrospective held in four leading museums throughout 2011: MoMA in New York City, Tate Modern in London, Centre Pompidou in Paris, and Kunstmuseum in Basel, Switzerland. The crystal bottle is engraved with Gabriel Orozco's black kites motif, based on one of the artist's most iconic works of art, and includes Orozco's signature. Only 400 limited edition bottles have been produced. Each bottle is signed, numbered and dated by hand.

Danh Vo Special Edition Bottle Tequila Casa Dragones commissioned Danh Vo to create a special edition sipping tequila collection honoring the artist's installation, Slip of the Tongue, at Pinault’s Punta Della Dogana in Venice. The exhibition marked the first time an artist was selected to curate for Punta Della Dogana. Each of the artworks presented in the exhibition seemed to partake in the idea that the activity of the artist is aimed at the preservation and afterlife of objects rather than their interpretation.

ACKNOWLEDGMENTS

TWO x TWO for AIDS and Art is a remarkable illustration of what can be achieved when the vision, determination, passion, and incredible generosity of so many people converge. Since its inception in 1999, TWO x TWO has raised over $60 million for amfAR and the Dallas Museum of Art. We are truly inspired and moved by the unrelenting support and devotion of the Dallas community and our friends in the contemporary art world who together have created one of the most beloved and significant fundraising endeavors of our time. It is with sincere gratitude that we acknowledge the following for their exceptional contributions to TWO x TWO 2016: DMA and amfAR Board Trustee Cindy Rachofsky and her husband, Howard, for welcoming us into their magnificent Richard Meier-designed house for the 18th time. It is their remarkable vision and passionate support for the Dallas Museum of Art, their dedication to amfAR and the fight against AIDS, and their extraordinary generosity that have made TWO x TWO such a cherished experience for everyone involved. We are eternally grateful for their heartfelt commitment and leadership. TWO x TWO’s spectacular and first-ever returning Chairman, Nancy C. Rogers. Nancy has for many years been one of TWO x TWO’s most loyal and generous devotees. Nancy’s support of this event is just a small part of her influence in the Dallas art and philanthropic communities. Her leadership, poise, and generosity have had a profound impact on TWO x TWO and so many other wonderful organizations in North Texas. We are forever grateful to Nancy for her friendship and for her endless efforts to champion TWO x TWO. Cheers to Dom Pérignon, Belvedere, and Moët Hennessy U.S.A. who generously provide the luxury Champagne and cocktails for the week of TWO x TWO events. Sotheby’s 17-year partnership with TWO x TWO has been instrumental to the success of the event, most notably through their annual underwriting of the auction catalogue.

Distinguished artist Laura Owens, this year’s recipient of the amfAR Award of Excellence for Artistic Contributions to the Fight Against AIDS. The presentation of this annual award will take place during a brunch on Sunday, October 23, at The Warehouse. Thank you, Todd, and your amazing team, for willingly and enthusiastically sharing your talent with TWO x TWO for the 18th year. Heartfelt thanks to our loyal friends at Waldman Bros./Chubb Personal Insurance for their generous and continued participation as the Art Sponsor. In particular, we recognize our wonderful friend Cindy Ferris, who again coordinated the travel plans of our many TWO x TWO guests visiting from outside of Dallas. We thank our dear friend and celebrated local artist, Francisco Moreno, for his creativity and leadership at our first ever Brilliant Futures Family Day with Harry Winston at Highland Park Village. To the many passionate friends and volunteers who make this event possible, thank you.

We would like to thank and recognize our additional in-kind sponsors and luxury auction donors whose contributions are an integral part of TWO x TWO: Aquazzura, Belvedere, Bird Bakery, Calligraphic Arts, Casa Dragones, Ceron, The Chinati Foundation, The Cultured Cup, Dallas Cowboys and Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders, DJ Lucy Wrubel, Dude Sweet Chocolate, Empire Baking Co., Flexjet, The French Laundry, the Gene and Jerry Jones Family, Gold Crown Valet, Grange Hall, Hadleigh’s, Hillstone, Hilton Dallas Park Cities, Marguerite Steed Hoffman and Tom Lentz, Hotel Crescent Court, Hotel Saint George, Inez & Vinoodh, The Joule Hotel, Judd Foundation, Mary Katrantzou, Meadowood Napa Valley, Million Air Dallas, Rick Owens, PRO/SOUND, Nancy and Richard Rogers, Rosewood Mansion on Turtle Creek, Runyon Fine Arts, Safe Art SAT, Inc., San Pellegrino/Acqua Panna, Sprinkles Cupcakes, Strong Travel Services, Switch Lighting Group, and Whitewall Magazine. Without the support of the Dallas community, this event would not be the spectacular success it is today. And finally, a project involving an auction of this magnitude is only possible because of the support of the artists whose extraordinary contributions this year and throughout the last decade have brought unprecedented success to TWO x TWO. Their commitment to the fight against AIDS and to the development of the DMA’s Contemporary Art Program demonstrates the generosity of the human spirit and the power it can have to make significant and positive changes in our lives. We are profoundly grateful for their exceptional goodwill, which is the foundation for the success of TWO x TWO for AIDS and Art.

CONDITIONS OF SALE

TWO x TWO for AIDS and Art

PLEASE NOTE THAT THE WORKS IN THIS AUCTION HAVE BEEN DONATED TO amfAR AND THE DALLAS MUSEUM OF ART. IF THEY DO NOT FIND A PERMANENT HOME IN YOUR COLLECTION, WE ASK THAT YOU CONSIDER DONATING THEM TO A MUSEUM. The property listed in the TWO x TWO for AIDS and Art catalogue and online at twoxtwo.org will be offered and sold by amfAR, The Foundation for AIDS Research, herein known as amfAR, a 501(c)3 entity. Any questions should be directed to amfAR and not to the event sponsors nor auctioneer, who serves merely as auctioneer for amfAR in conducting the auction sale and participates on the following terms and conditions, as amended by any posted notices or oral announcements during the sale, which govern the sale of all the property offered at the auction: 1. (a) Neither the auctioneer nor amfAR assumes any risk, liability or responsibility for the authenticity of the authorship of any property offered at this auction (that is, the identity of the creator or the period, culture, source or origin, as the case may be, with which the creation of any property is identified). (b) ALL PROPERTY IS SOLD "AS IS" AND NEITHER THE AUCTIONEER NOR amfAR MAKES ANY REPRESENTATIONS OR WARRANTIES OF ANY KIND OR NATURE, EXPRESSED OR IMPLIED, WITH RESPECT TO THE PROPERTY, AND IN NO EVENT SHALL EITHER OF THEM BE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE CORRECTNESS OF ANY CATALOGUE OR NOTICES OR DESCRIPTIONS OF PROPERTY, OR BE DEEMED TO HAVE MADE ANY REPRESENTATIONS OR WARRANTY OF PHYSICAL CONDITION, SIZE, QUALITY, RARITY, IMPORTANCE, GENUINENESS, ATTRIBUTION, AUTHENTICITY, PROVENANCE OR HISTORICAL RELEVANCE OF THE PROPERTY. No statement in any catalogue, notice or description or made at the sale, in any bill of sale invoice or elsewhere, shall be deemed such a representation or warranty or any assumption of liability. Neither the auctioneer nor amfAR makes any representation or warranty, expressed or implied, as to whether the purchaser acquires any reproduction rights in the property. Prospective bidders should inspect the property before bidding to determine its condition, size and whether or not it has been repaired or restored. 2. Any property may be withdrawn by amfAR at any time before the actual sale without any liability therefor. 3. The auctioneer and amfAR reserve the right to reject a bid from any bidder. The highest bidder acknowledged by the auctioneer shall be the purchaser. In the event of any dispute between bidders, the auctioneer and amfAR shall have sole and final discretion either to determine the successful bidder or to reoffer and resell the article in dispute. If any dispute arises after the sale, amfAR’s sale records shall be conclusive in all respects. 4. If the auctioneer determines that any opening bid is not commensurate with the value of the article offered, s/he may reject the same and withdraw the article from sale, and if, having acknowledged an opening bid, s/he decides that any advance thereafter is insufficient, s/he may reject the advance. 5. On the fall of the auctioneer's hammer, the highest bidder shall be deemed to have purchased the offered lot subject to all of the conditions set forth herein and thereupon (a) assumes the risk and responsibility thereof (including without limitation damage to frames or glass covering the prints), (b) will sign a confirmation of purchase thereof and (c) will pay the full purchase price therefor or such part as amfAR may require. All property shall be removed from The Rachofsky House by the purchaser at his/her expense no later than 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday, October 25, 2016. If not so removed, the property will be sent by amfAR at the expense of the purchaser to a public warehouse for the account, risk, and expense of the purchaser and such added charges will then be added to the purchase price of the object. If the foregoing conditions and other applicable conditions are not complied with, in addition to other remedies available to amfAR by law, including, without limitation, the right to hold the purchaser liable for the bid price, amfAR at its option, may either (a) cancel the sale or (b) resell the property on three days notice to the purchaser and for the account and risk of the purchaser, either publicly or privately, and in such event the purchaser shall be liable for payment of any deficiency, plus all other charges due hereunder and incidental damages. 6. Deliveries outside of Texas may be subject to the tax of another state and, where a duty of collection is imposed by law, amfAR will require payment of all said taxes. 7. A purchase price above fair market value is eligible for deductibility as a charitable contribution. The final determination of fair market value is, for tax purposes, the responsibility of the purchaser. 8. All checks must be made payable to amfAR. 9. (a) Neither the auctioneer nor amfAR is responsible for errors or omissions arising out of or resulting from order bids or bids transmitted by telephone, including without limitation, errors or omissions arising from mechanical difficulties or failure. (b) Some lots may be offered for sale subject to a reserve, which is the confidential minimum price below which such lot will not be sold. The auctioneer may implement such reserve by bidding on behalf of amfAR. 10. Items in the Live and Silent Auctions will be subject to these Conditions of Sale. The amount of any bid must be equal to or exceed the required increment as indicated online or on the bid form and must be in round dollar amounts. All signed bids are binding and successful bidders not present at the auction will be notified by phone or email no later than Monday, October 24, 2016. 11. These Conditions of Sale, as well as the purchaser’s and amfAR’s respective rights and obligations hereunder, shall be governed by and construed and enforced in accordance with the laws of the State of Texas. By bidding at an auction, whether present in person or by agent, order bid, telephone or other means, the purchaser shall be deemed to have consented to the exclusive jurisdiction of the state courts, and the federal courts sitting in the State of Texas.

LET'S GIVE THE EPIDEMIC AN EPIC ENDING! In February 2014 amfAR launched a bold new initiative called

Countdown to a Cure for AIDS. The goal? To develop the scientific basis for a cure by 2020. To spearhead this initiative, this year we established the amfAR Institute for HIV Cure Research, a collaborative enterprise involving many of the best minds in HIV research. We are immensely grateful to everyone associated with TWO x TWO for AIDS and Art for their past support. And we hope we can count on your continued support as we count down to a cure. Thank you!
