TWO x TWO for AIDS and Art is an annual black-tie gala and contemporary art auction held at the Richard Meier-designed Rachofsky House in Dallas, Texas. Thanks to the phenomenal support of the participating artists, dealers, sponsors and patrons, TWO x TWO has raised over $60 million in its seventeen-year history in support of amfAR’s AIDS research initiatives and the Dallas Museum of Art’s contemporary art acquisitions and exhibitions. TWO x TWO for AIDS and Art has evolved into a series of social events designed to highlight the efforts of amfAR and engaging the arts community in Dallas. TWO x TWO has become the largest fundraiser in the United States for amfAR. TWO x TWO is also the largest single annual source of funds for contemporary art acquisitions at the DMA, enabling the addition of over 220 major works of contemporary art to its permanent collection and helping to fund remarkable contemporary exhibitions. amfAR, founded in 1985, is dedicated to ending the global AIDS epidemic through innovative research. With the freedom and flexibility to respond quickly to emerging areas of scientific promise, amfAR plays a catalytic role in accelerating the pace of HIV/AIDS research and achieving real breakthroughs. Intensifying its research efforts, in 2014 amfAR launched the “Countdown to a Cure for HIV/AIDS,” a bold new initiative aimed at developing the scientific basis of a cure by 2020 and supported by a $100 million research investment strategy. The cornerstone of the strategy is the amfAR Institute for HIV Cure Research, established on World AIDS Day 2015 and based at the University of California, San Francisco. The bidding period begins on Monday, October 17, 2016, at 12 noon CST, and will close on Friday, October 21, at 12 noon CST. During that time period, the first bidder to place a bid at or above the full retail price wins the work. Bids placed prior to 12 noon on Monday will be considered simultaneous bids. If simultaneous and equal bids are placed, there will be a bid-off between the highest bidders until a maximum bid wins. If a work sells in the auction, it will be marked as “sold” during the following TWO x TWO events. Laura Owens (b. 1970, Euclid, Ohio) lives and works in Los Angeles. For the past two decades, Owens’s influential work has questioned the parameters and possibilities for making and viewing a painting today. She has continually shifted the terms of her practice, incorporating figuration, abstraction, digital techniques, and gestural mark making into multivalent compositions that confound expectations of pictorial space. Owens’s work has been presented in solo exhibitions at the CCA Wattis Institute for Contemporary Arts, San Francisco (2016); Secession, Vienna (2015); Kunstmuseum Bonn (2011); Kunsthalle Zürich (2006); Camden Arts Centre, London (2006); Milwaukee Art Museum (2003); Aspen Art Museum, Colorado (2003); Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles (2003); and Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, Boston (2001), among other venues. Owens’s art has also been featured in group exhibitions such as Forever Now, Museum of Modern Art, New York (2014); Whitney Biennial, Whitney Museum of American Art, New York (2014); The Spectacular of Vernacular, Walker Art Center, Minneapolis (2011); Undiscovered Country, Hammer Museum, Los Angeles (2004); Whitney Biennial (2004); Public Offerings, Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles (2001); Carnegie International, Carnegie Museum, Pittsburgh (1999); and Vertical Painting Show, P.S.1 Contemporary Art Center (1997). She is the founder of 356 S. Mission Rd., a contemporary art exhibition space in downtown Los Angeles. As part of TWO x TWO for AIDS and Art 2016, Laura Owens will receive the amfAR Award of Excellence for Artistic Contributions to the Fight Against AIDS in recognition of her generous support of amfAR’s programs. The award presentation will take place during a brunch on Sunday, October 23, hosted by Cindy and Howard Rachofsky at The Warehouse. BIDDING PROCEDURES YOU DO NOT HAVE TO BE PRESENT AT THE OCTOBER 22 GALA TO BUY GREAT ART! Works in the silent and live auctions at the October 22 gala can be identified by lot number on the bid sheets hanging next to each piece at The Rachofsky House. To bid on an artwork in the silent auction, guests may enter their paddle number and bid amount, noting the required bidding increments. Any work, at amfAR and TWO x TWO's discretion, is eligible to be included in the live auction during the gala dinner; works chosen as live auction items will be labeled as such no later than Friday, October 21, 2016. If you are unable to attend TWO x TWO for AIDS and Art on Saturday, October 22, and would like to place a bid on a live or silent auction lot, you may complete the Absentee Bid Form and submit it by Friday, October 21. A TWO x TWO auction representative can bid on your behalf up to your pre-set maximum bid. IF THEY DO NOT FIND A PERMANENT HOME IN YOUR COLLECTION, WE ASK THAT YOU CONSIDER DONATING THEM TO A MUSEUM. The property listed in the TWO x TWO for AIDS and Art catalogue and online at twoxtwo.org will be offered and sold by amfAR, The Foundation for AIDS Research, herein known as amfAR, a 501(c)3 entity. If any dispute arises after the sale, amfAR’s sale records shall be conclusive in all respects. 4. If the auctioneer determines that any opening bid is not commensurate with the value of the article offered, s/he may reject the same and withdraw the article from sale, and if, having acknowledged an opening bid, s/he decides that any advance thereafter is insufficient, s/he may reject the advance. 5. On the fall of the auctioneer's hammer, the highest bidder shall be deemed to have purchased the offered lot subject to all of the conditions set forth herein and thereupon (a) assumes the risk and responsibility thereof (including without limitation damage to frames or glass covering the prints), (b) will sign a confirmation of purchase thereof and (c) will pay the full purchase price therefor or such part as amfAR may require. All property shall be removed from The Rachofsky House by the purchaser at his/her expense no later than 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday, October 25, 2016. If not so removed, the property will be sent by amfAR at the expense of the purchaser to a public warehouse for the account, risk, and expense of the purchaser and such added charges will then be added to the purchase price of the object. If the foregoing conditions and other applicable conditions are not complied with, in addition to other remedies available to amfAR by law, including, without limitation, the right to hold the purchaser liable for the bid price, amfAR at its option, may either (a) cancel the sale or (b) resell the property on three days notice to the purchaser and for the account and risk of the purchaser, either publicly or privately, and in such event the purchaser shall be liable for payment of any deficiency, plus all other charges due hereunder and incidental damages. 6. Deliveries outside of Texas may be subject to the tax of another state and, where a duty of collection is imposed by law, amfAR will require payment of all said taxes. 7. A purchase price above fair market value is eligible for deductibility as a charitable contribution. The final determination of fair market value is, for tax purposes, the responsibility of the purchaser. 8. All checks must be made payable to amfAR. 9. (a) Neither the auctioneer nor amfAR is responsible for errors or omissions arising out of or resulting from order bids or bids transmitted by telephone, including without limitation, errors or omissions arising from mechanical difficulties or failure. (b) Some lots may be offered for sale subject to a reserve, which is the confidential minimum price below which such lot will not be sold. The auctioneer may implement such reserve by bidding on behalf of amfAR. 10. Items in the Live and Silent Auctions will be subject to these Conditions of Sale. The amount of any bid must be equal to or exceed the required increment as indicated online or on the bid form and must be in round dollar amounts. All signed bids are binding and successful bidders not present at the auction will be notified by phone or email no later than Monday, October 24, 2016. 11. These Conditions of Sale, as well as the purchaser’s and amfAR’s respective rights and obligations hereunder, shall be governed by and construed and enforced in accordance with the laws of the State of Texas. By bidding at an auction, whether present in person or by agent, order bid, telephone or other means, the purchaser shall be deemed to have consented to the exclusive jurisdiction of the state courts, and the federal courts sitting in the State of Texas.
