Featuring more than seventy works of art, African Masks:

The Art of Disguise reveals the beauty, function, and meaning of African masks. In addition to a large variety of masks from throughout Africa, full masquerade costumes will be displayed, and the masks will “come to life� in performances recorded on film and in photographs.

Dallas Black Dance Theatre presents DanceAfrica Marketplace Saturday, October 9, 10:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m. Dallas Arts District Bring the whole family and enjoy the free outdoor marketplace of DanceAfrica. Experience a full day of performance by local and national artists, African, Caribbean, and African American food, arts and crafts, fashion, and in collaboration with the Dallas Museum of Art, a children’s area celebrating African Masks.

Arts & Letters Live: Sara Gruen Tuesday, October 12, 7:30 p.m. Horchow Auditorium Author Sara Gruen will discuss her New York Times #1 Best Seller Water for Elephants as well as her forthcoming novel, Ape House, the story of a family of Bonobo apes who are cast in a reality TV show and get caught up in the ensuing media storm. 6:30 p.m. Join DMA curator Dr. Roslyn Walker for a pre-event tour of the exhibition African Masks. Art and Ritual Lecture Series Selected Saturdays, 2:00 p.m. This Saturday lecture series explores the relationship between art, architecture, and ritual, from antiquity to contemporary culture, and presents new and interesting perspectives from artists, art historians, and curators.

Saturday, October 23 Art and Life in Africa: Masks Give the Spirits Life

Join prominent scholar Dr. Christopher D. Roy, Professor of Art History at the University of Iowa, to explore masks and performances in West Africa.

Family Celebration: Masks and Máscaras Sunday, October 31, 11:00 a.m.–3:30 p.m. FREE

In honor of the México 200 and African Masks exhibitions and Day of the Dead/Día de los Muertos, the Museum will showcase Mexican and African works in the DMA’s collections along with artist talks, performances, and Studio Creations.

Special Performance: Dallas Black Dance Theatre Sunday, October 31, 3:00 p.m. Horchow Auditorium See the public premiere of an original dance inspired by African Masks.

Late Night Lecture Friday, November 19, 7:00 p.m. Horchow Auditorium Dr. Babatunde Lawal, Professor of Art History at Virginia Commonwealth University, discusses the Yoruba artistic traditions of Nigeria and their influence on the visual culture of the Americas.

Late Night Artist Talk: Renée Stout Friday, November 19, 9:00 p.m. Horchow Auditorium Renée Stout is an internationally renowned artist whose works explore themes of self-exploration, empowerment, and healing and draw from the belief systems and artistic traditions of Africa and the African Diaspora.

Parents and children will learn about works of art together in the African Masks exhibition, participate in hands-on activities, and create a work of art in the Art Studio. For children ages 6–12.
