After serving six years as president of the Board of Trustees at the Dallas Museum of Art, I will be

It is remarkable that in 2014 the DMA celebrates 30 years in the Arts District, and that our progress has mirrored that of the region as a whole. Dallas and North Texas have grown to be the fourth largest metropolitan district in the nation. At the same time, the Dallas Arts District—of which the DMA is the anchor tenant—has become the nation’s largest such district and a key cultural statement for the city. As a longtime resident of Dallas, I am excited to see that the promise of becoming a focus of significant international attention is now becoming a reality.

the Dallas–Fort Worth region and throughout the nation. The sister to DMA Friends—the DMA Partners program— has also successfully expanded in its first year. Our dedicated partners in philanthropy, whether they are individuals, corporations, foundations, or government agencies, have been swift to respond. Impressively, total giving has increased since the Museum returned to free general admission and launched a free membership program. This has enabled the Museum to deliver access to its extensive collection and diverse public programs. Eleven percent of Partners who have joined over the last year are new to the DMA. That’s extraordinary!

director’s report

Maxwell L. Anderson The Eugene McDermott Director

The Dallas Museum of Art has taken massive strides, expanding its conservation department, boosting visitor engagement with its Friends program, improving information culling and tech connectivity, and making a grand offering of free admission. It’s the ultimate public gift, and it’s changing the cultural current

promotes research, dialogue, and public participation, helping to reveal the insights of artists from every continent over the last 5,000 years. The Museum started the year with the adoption of a new strategic plan, which includes a set of core values underpinning all activities of the DMA: “The Dallas Museum of Art is an institution in which transparency, responsible stewardship, service to the public, culture of caring, learning, informed risk-taking, and innovation are the measure of our impact on the local community we serve and the museum field to which we belong.” In addition, the new strategic plan outlines four major operative goals for 2013–2016. To guide its growth and development over the next three years, the Dallas Museum of Art will: 1. Expand the Museum’s relevance to local and global

of how Dallas perceives the artviewing experience. —Dallas Observer (in recognizing the DMA as Best Museum of 2013)

communities; 2. Lead the museum field through research, scholarship, and innovation; 3. Ensure that the DMA’s core values are instilled and embodied in all staff and volunteers, and that those values are the foundation of our actions; and

Without a doubt, there have been many exciting accomplishments at the DMA during fiscal year 2012–2013, not least among them the return to free general admission. This major policy shift is in line with the

4. Build the financial capacity to enable growth and fulfill mission imperatives.

Museum’s new mission statement: The Dallas Museum of Art is both a responsible steward of cultural heritage and a trusted advocate for the essential place of art in the lives of people locally and around the globe. The DMA is transparent, ethical, and takes informed risks. It

Expanded the DMA’s relevance both locally and globally. Hotel Texas and DallasSITES: In commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, the Dallas Museum of Art organized Hotel Texas: An Art Exhibition for the President and Mrs. John F. Kennedy, which reunited the works of art installed in the president and Mrs. Kennedy’s suite at the Hotel Texas in Fort Worth during their overnight visit in November 1963. By exploring the tragedy from a fresh and “softer” viewpoint, the exhibition resonated with local Dallas audiences. Running concurrently with Hotel Texas through the summer of 2013, and ongoing as an open-ended e-publication, DallasSITES: Charting Contemporary Art, 1963–Present and the accompanying installation DallasSITES: Available Space celebrated the history and lively present of North Texas’s distinctive art scene. By sharing the work of past and emerging local artists with the DMA’s general audience, we

Light in Art and Science from the Islamic World, which opened in Seville, Spain, in October 2013 and will travel to the DMA in spring of 2014. DMX International Exchange Program: On December 3, 2012, the Dallas Museum of Art signed a memorandum of understanding with Turkish Director General for Cultural Heritage and Museums O. Murat Süslü, marking the first initiative in the Dallas Museum of Art’s new DMX international exchange program. DMX (Dallas Museum Exchange) is designed to establish international collaborations for the loan of works of art and sharing of expertise. In June of 2012, the Museum signed a memorandum of understanding with Ambassador Dino Patti Djalal of the Republic of Indonesia, and a third memorandum is forthcoming between the DMA and the Republic of Italy.

The Islamic Art Initiative: On November 1, 2012, the DMA announced the appointment of Sabiha Al Khemir, the founding director of the Museum of Islamic Art in Doha, Qatar, as the Museum’s first senior advisor for Islamic art. Dr. Al Khemir’s appointment signals the DMA’s expanded focus on developing new collaborations between the 6

major traveling exhibition of Islamic art and culture, Nur:

mayor of Dallas, and John Rossant, chairman of the board of the New Cities Foundation, announced that next year’s New Cities Summit, dedicated to the

high-level exchange of dynamic ideas and innovative solutions for world cities, will take place in Dallas. Dallas will also host the inception of the Global Cultural Districts Network, an international consortium. The New Cities Foundation will launch the GCDN in partnership with the Dallas Arts District, which has become one of the largest and most important cultural districts in the world. I am pleased to serve as the chairman of the Dallas Arts District and co-chairman of the GCDN in bringing this initiative to Dallas.

Led the field in research, scholarship, and innovation. Conservation Studio and Initiative: Under the leadership of the DMA’s chief conservator, Mark Leonard, the new Paintings Conservation Studio opened in November 2013 as part of the Museum’s initiative to establish a more comprehensive in-house conservation program. The DMA is also collaborating with the University of Texas at Dallas and the University of North Texas in Denton on three long-term research projects that focus on new analytical techniques and technologies for the study of artists’ materials. Scholarly Publications: This was an unprecedented year for DMA publications, with six titles published, including two collection catalogues, The Arts of India, Southeast Asia, and the Himalayas at the Dallas Museum of Art and Eyes of the Ancestors: The Arts of Island Southeast Asia at the Dallas Museum of Art; two exhibition catalogues, Chagall: Beyond Color and Hotel Texas: An Art Exhibition for the President and Mrs. John F. Kennedy; an e-pub, DallasSITES: A Developing Art Scene, Postwar to Present; and a volume of scholarly essays, Impressionism 7

and Post-Impressionism at the Dallas Museum of Art: The Richard R. Brettell Lectures. Beyond the sheer volume of publications, every title in this list boasts impressive scholarship. Perot Partnership and IMLS Grant to Support Audience Engagement: In partnership with the Perot Museum of Nature and Science, and funded by a grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) and the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation, the DMA is designing a Learning Lab, a new space where young people can connect with mentors and peers. IMLS also awarded the Dallas Museum of Art a National Leadership Grant of more than $450,000 to support the research and expansion of a platform of engagement based on the Museum’s Friends membership program (which is discussed in greater detail below) to three partner institutions: the Denver Art Museum, Los Angeles County Museum of Art, and Minneapolis Institute of Arts. These innovative partnerships provide outstanding opportunities to explore how museums can be more relevant to our audiences in the 21st century.

Instilled and embodied our core values in staff and volunteers and ensured that those values are the foundation of our actions. New Photography Policy: Museum bans on picture taking are practically unenforceable, obsolete, and off-putting to visitors in this age of social media and the ubiquitous cell phone “selfie.” In a recent move, the DMA decided to allow non-flash photography of all objects in its collection, and we routinely attempt to negotiate with all lenders to allow photography of their works. We hope this expanded policy will encourage our visitors to engage more with the works on view in the galleries. 8
