interim director’s report
Walter B. Elcock
Interim Director Former President, Board of Trustees
I transitioned from Board President to Interim Director of the Dallas Museum of Art when Max Anderson stepped down as the Eugene McDermott Director on September 28, 2015. As we begin our search process for a new director and address the challenges that always accompany such a change, I want you to take time to appreciate and celebrate all that we have accomplished together this past year. It has been an honor for me to serve on the Board, and it is now a rare privilege for me to work with the skilled and dedicated professionals we have on our staff. In fiscal year 2014–2015 (FY 15), the DMA adopted a new fiscal year model to better align with other nonprofit fiscal calendars and those of the Museum’s donors and contributors. FY 15 began October 1, 2014, and ended June 30, 2015, resulting in a shortened window, with the twelve-month fiscal year resuming as FY 16
The Museum’s Strategic Plan, including our Core Values (above), guides us on every level and in every category of institutional activity, which can be summarized as follows:
Expand the Museum’s relevance Growth in audience size and diversity Two years ago, the Museum made the crucial decision to return to a policy of free general admission and has welcomed more than two million visitors since then, a record-breaking increase of 48% that affirms the program’s success in reducing barriers to participation

The Dallas Museum of Art is an institution in which transparency, responsible stewardship, service to the public, a culture of caring, learning, informed risktaking, and innovation are the measure of our impact on the local community we serve and the museum field to which we belong.

Forward-looking programs February 2015 marked the fifth anniversary of two of the Museum’s most acclaimed access programs: Autism Awareness Family Celebrations, currently serving over nine hundred visitors from North Texas each year, and Meaningful Moments, designed specifically for individuals with early stage dementia. The Museum also inaugurated a new program for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities, called All Access Art, and for the first time is now offering a DMA Access docent training course. Expanding further upon these programs, the DMA’s Go van Gogh® school outreach program last year launched Go van Gogh: Color My World, its first program designed specifically for special education classrooms. This builds upon the Museum’s first access series, Art Beyond Sight, a program initiated in 2007 for people with visual impairment, which has been featured on the CBS Evening News, among other news outlets. Celebrating overlooked artists and underrepresented identities In February 2015, the Museum announced the acquisition of Marcia H Travels (1970), the first work in the DMA’s collection by painter Frank Bowling, who is widely celebrated for his contributions to the field of abstraction and his advocacy of black artists internationally. artists and underrepresented identities. In line with this focus, New York–based artist Kevin Beasley debuted a new work titled Black Rocker during the May 15 Late Night at the Dallas Museum of Art. A performance piece commissioned by the DMA and SOLUNA, Black Rocker celebrated the history of black music in America. Another exhibition curated by Delahunty, Bold Abstractions: Selections from the DMA Collection 1966–1976, explored work produced by artists who, against the backdrop of the civil rights, feminist, and gay liberation movements, had up to that point been largely excluded. Two other major exhibitions, Between Action and the Unknown: The Art of Kazuo Shiraga and Sadamasa Motonaga, co-curated by Gabriel Ritter, The Nancy and Tim Hanley Assistant Curator of Contemporary Art, and Inca: Conquests of the Andes/Los Incas y las conquistas de los Andes, curated by Kimberly Jones, The Ellen and Harry S. Parker III Curator of the Arts of the Americas, rounded out the DMA’s commitment to presenting art from around the world. Drawn from among the best collections in Japan, Between Action and the Unknown
included paintings, drawings, photographs, films, small-scale sculpture, ephemera, and re-creations of outdoor installations, many of which had never been exhibited in the United States. Exploring the dynamic nature of state expansion and imperial conquest through Andean visual arts, Inca was the DMA’s first exhibition dedicated exclusively to Andean art.
Build the Museum’s financial capacity Staff appointments In October 2014, Brenda Berry was named the DMA’s Chief Financial Officer, having joined the Museum in 2012 as its controller. Before joining the DMA, Berry was an Audit Partner with Deloitte, where LACMA was among her clients. She also served on the Philbrook Museum of Art Board of Trustees from 2005 through 2010 as its Audit Committee Chair and as a member of the Executive Committee. With this promotion, Berry is now responsible for all accounting, financial operations, and financial reporting for the Museum. Cynthia Calabrese joined the Museum as our new Director of Development in December 2014. Calabrese comes to the DMA with more than twenty-five years of fundraising and philanthropic giving experience, primarily at visual and performing arts institutions, including nine years of prior service as Development Director at the Dallas Theater Center. In tandem with these appointments, the entire Development Department has been reorganized and reinvigorated. The appointments and reorganization are allowing us to maximize channels of fundraising and enhance organizational efficiency. Transformative individual gifts Dallas Museum of Art benefactors Jennifer and John Eagle have donated $3 million to the DMA for the renovation of the Museum’s north entrance to improve the overall visitor experience. The Hamon Charitable Foundation has given an additional gift of $1.3 million for the project, for a total

contribution of $4.3 million. The north entrance, to be renamed Eagle Family Plaza, will be designed by Dallasbased landscape architectural firms Studio Outside and Hocker Design Group, while a new freestanding food service building and interior renovations to the DMA’s cafe will be designed by local architectural firm Morrison Dilworth + Walls. Construction begins in August 2015 with a proposed opening in spring 2016. In May 2015, longtime DMA patrons Beverly and Donald S. Freeman awarded $1.5 million to the Museum to establish the Bonnie Pitman Education Endowment to Do Something New™ fund, benefiting the DMA’s Education Department and in honor of the Museum’s former director. The endowment supports the development of new programs dedicated to engaging audiences in innovative ways. Record-breaking fundraising successes In addition to individual gifts, the Museum’s FY 15 fundraising events broke records. The 2015 Art Ball generated $2.4 million, making it the highest-grossing event in the fifty-year history of the gala, and achieved the highest-grossing After Party to date. The annual Silver Supper evening raised over $300,000 for the Decorative Arts Acquisition Endowment Fund, and the 2014 TWO x TWO for AIDS and Art, held in October, honored painter Wade Guyton, whose donated work broke the record for the highest bid in the history of the sixteen-year event at $2.6 million. This event raised a total of $7 million for the DMA and amfAR, The Foundation for AIDS Research.

Each of these exhibitions was accompanied by a major scholarly catalogue published or copublished by the DMA.
I have been honored to serve as President of the Board of Trustees during such an exciting time for the DMA. With great appreciation, I wish to thank all of the Museum’s supporters—the City of Dallas, trustees, staff, volunteers, donors, friends, and members—who enable the Dallas Museum of Art to be a great resource for the community and an important contributor to cultural life regionally, nationally, and internationally. I thank Maxwell L. Anderson, the former Eugene McDermott Director, for his visionary leadership and many contributions in advancing the institution over the past four years. I would also like to thank past Chairman of the Board of Trustees Margot B. Perot for her outstanding service to the DMA. My deepest congratulations go to her successor, Melissa Foster Fetter, and also to incoming President Catherine Rose, with whom I look forward to a fruitful and ambitious collaboration as the DMA’s Interim Director.
