president’s report

Catherine M. Rose

President, Board of Trustees

Fiscal year 2016 was a remarkable year of achievement, growth, and change, in which we undertook many new initiatives and challenges, all while remaining committed to our mission:

The Dallas Museum of Art is both a responsible steward of cultural heritage and a trusted advocate for the essential place of art in the lives of people locally and around the globe. The DMA is transparent, ethical, and takes informed risks. It promotes research, dialogue, and public participation, helping to reveal the insights of artists from every continent over the last 5,000 years. A number of transformative enhancements to our Museum campus were completed over the course of the fiscal year.

In addition, a passageway from the entry doors through to the Museum’s Fleischner Courtyard improved and revitalized interior food service offerings, and a new outdoor dining venue, Socca Mediterranean Cafe, opened in early June. Local chef and menu consultant Sharon Hage worked with the DMA to develop the concept, which features selections inspired by Mediterranean cuisine. The new al fresco dining experience

Important Exhibitions Throughout all of these exciting changes, our Museum remained steadfast in its devotion to its mission, and the DMA’s audiences continued to grow in size and diversity. A total of 728,699 visitors attended the Museum in FY 2016, and membership increased by 11%, with 13,827 total membership households counted as of July 1, 2016. Part of this growth can be attributed to the stellar slate of exhibitions in FY 2016: Jackson Pollock: Blind Spots From November 2015 to March 2016, the DMA presented Jackson Pollock: Blind Spots, a “once in a lifetime” exhibition organized by Hoffman Family Senior Curator of Contemporary Art Gavin Delahunty. The largest survey of Jackson Pollock’s black paintings ever assembled, this exceptional presentation included many works that had not been exhibited for more than 50 years, several of which were considered lost. Not only was the exhibition remarkable, but it also received unprecedented private, corporate, and government funding, including a $500,000 grant from the Texas Commission on the Arts (TCA). Spirit and Matter: Masterpieces from the Keir Collection of Islamic Art Also in the fall, Spirit and Matter: Masterpieces from the Keir Collection of Islamic Art featured the first North American exhibition drawn from one of the world’s most significant and rarely exhibited private collections of Islamic art. The exhibition showcased more than 50 of the most historically important masterworks from the Keir Collection, which began arriving in Dallas this year on a long-term loan to the DMA. Spirit and Matter marks the first of multiple exhibitions sponsored by Kosmos Energy, which pledged $800,000 of support for the Museum’s forthcoming series of special exhibitions and installations focused on the Keir Collection. Inca: Conquests of the Andes/Los Incas y las conquistas de los Andes Featuring over 120 objects, Inca: Conquests of the Andes/Los Incas y las conquistas de los Andes examined Andean visual arts through the lenses of state expansion and imperial conquest. This was the first DMA-organized exhibition dedicated exclusively to Andean art, and the first special exhibition organized and curated by Dr. Kimberly L. Jones, The Ellen and Harry S. Parker III Assistant Curator of the Arts of the Americas. As the title suggests, the exhibition was presented in both English and Spanish. Featuring important works from the DMA’s Arts of the Americas collection, some displayed for the first time, and several significant loans, Inca: Conquests of the Andes exhibited the traditional media of Andean visual arts, from ceramic and wood vessels to highly prestigious gold, silver, feather, and textile accoutrements.

6

Other highlights of the year included: Vermeer Suite: Music in 17thCentury Dutch Painting In December 2015, the DMA presented Vermeer Suite: Music in 17th-Century Dutch Painting, an exhibition showcasing paintings from the prestigious Leiden Collection of New York, including one of Johannes Vermeer’s last works, Young Woman Seated at a Virginal. Irving Penn: Beyond Beauty Through the spring and summer of 2016, the Museum presented Irving Penn: Beyond Beauty, the first retrospective of Penn’s work in nearly 20 years, which celebrated his legacy as a modern master and revealed the full expressive range of his work. Rebecca Warren: The Main Feeling Coinciding with the installation of the first US museum–commissioned sculpture by Rebecca Warren, Pas de Deux (Plaza Monument), the DMA mounted a focused exhibition of work she created over the past decade.

and care partners. The DMA premiered the first Dance for PD® performance ever to be showcased in a museum gallery on February 19, 2016, in conjunction with Jackson Pollock: Blind Spots. Community and artist partnerships Through the C3 Visiting Artist Project, the Center for Creative Connections invites local and national artists from a variety of disciplines to participate in the development and facilitation of educational programs and spaces offered at the DMA. This year, to create in-depth programs of special meaning to our local audiences, C3 staff worked with Daryl Howard, an Austin-based printmaker; David Herman, a conceptual artist, educator, and co-founder of Preservation LINK; and the DMA’s Writer-in-Residence, A. Kendra Greene. Other community programs and outreach For the seventh year in a row, the Museum participated in Blue Star Museums, the annual collaboration among the National Endowment for the Arts, Blue Star Families, and the Department of Defense, to offer free admission to the nation’s active duty military personnel and their families. And on May 23, 2016, the DMA was honored to host 49 individuals from 21 countries as they became US citizens in the Museum’s fourth annual naturalization ceremony. 8

Phase 2 will incorporate the scholarly content generated by our Digital Collections Content Coordinators, while staff in the Education, Creative Services, and IT departments will collaborate on a complete redesign of the online collection in order to gracefully accommodate this wealth of additional scholarly information in a manner that is easily navigable and accessible to online visitors.

Additionally, we undertook a yearlong project focusing on the important old master paintings that form the core of the Hoblitzelle Collection, supported by the Hoblitzelle Foundation, and we initiated a program of artist interviews, starting with an in-depth conversation with Rebecca Warren during the installation of her DMAcommissioned work, Pas de Deux (Plaza Monument). These interviews will furnish an archival record of the materials and techniques used by living artists in creating their works that are now part of the Museum’s permanent collection. Finally, the Conservation Science partnership with the University of Texas at Dallas and the Edith O’Donnell Institute of Art History began in earnest with the arrival of Dr. David McPhail at UTD. He is working closely with the Conservation Department at the DMA—as well as at the Amon Carter Museum—on four multi-year major research projects.

Jackson Pollock: Blind Spots offers critical new scholarship on this understudied yet pivotal period in the artist’s career and provides radical new insights into Pollock’s practice. Co-published with Tate Liverpool in the UK, this scholarly and wide-ranging publication features contributions by the DMA’s Gavin Delahunty; Dr. Michael Fried, J. R. Herbert Boone Professor of Humanities and the History of Art, Johns Hopkins University; Dr. Stephanie Straine, Tate Liverpool; and Dr. Jo Applin, Senior Lecturer in Modern and Contemporary Art, University of York. The Wittgenstein Vitrine: Modern Opulence in Vienna reveals the history, context, and conservation treatment of one of the most important works produced by the Wiener Werkstätte: the Wittgenstein Vitrine, acquired by the Museum in late 2013. The print catalogue contains contributions by Elisabeth Schmuttermeier, Curator, Metal Collection and Wiener Werkstätte Archive, MAK, Vienna; Kevin W. Tucker, the former Margot B. Perot Senior Curator of Decorative Arts and Design at the DMA; and Fran Baas, Associate Conservator at the DMA. The expanded online publication

includes contributions by Alessandra Comini, University Distinguished Professor of Art History Emerita, Meadows School of the Arts, SMU; Christian Witt-Dörring, Curator at MAK; Samuel Albert, Adjunct Professor at the Fashion Institute of Technology, New York; and Christopher Long, Associate Professor at the UT Austin School of Architecture.

Our Growing Collection During FY 2016, many important works of art were added to the permanent collection, strengthening or complementing the Museum’s holdings. This fiscal year, the Dallas Art Fair Foundation Acquisition Program was announced as an annual initiative designed to enhance the relationship between the Museum, the Dallas Art Fair, and the fair’s international roster of exhibiting galleries and artists. The Acquisition Program will serve as a catalyst to develop and strengthen such partnerships, further contributing to the growth of Dallas’s cultural presence. Another first, in June 2016 the DMA and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art announced the joint acquisition of a major sculpture by Walter De Maria. Large Rod Series: Circle/Rectangle, 5, 7, 9, 11, 13 (1986) is an important installment in De Maria’s Large Rod Series, a group of floor-based sculptures that were among the artist’s most notable contributions to the Minimalist movement. For acquisition highlights, see pages 13–47; a full list of acquisitions can be found starting on page 48.

Listed above is just a sampling from a year of amazing accomplishments during much transition and change. We thank Walter Elcock, Interim Director and former Board President, for his invaluable leadership during this past year, and we are also grateful for the ongoing support of our trustees, members, and funders. Looking back, it was a truly remarkable year, and the DMA finds itself well positioned for an auspicious future under the leadership of the new Eugene McDermott Director, Agustín Arteaga. Working in concert with and supported by our committed supporters and Board of Trustees, we look forward to the exciting milestones and successes his visionary leadership will bring to the Dallas Museum of Art.

Agustín Arteaga

The Eugene McDermott Director

I am honored to serve as the new Eugene McDermott Director of the Dallas Museum of Art. The DMA stands among the largest museums in the country and is internationally respected, but its true pride comes from being the museum of the City of Dallas. For the past 30 years, my work has been guided by the belief that art is a critical tool in fostering cross-cultural understanding and dialogue. The DMA has long championed the interpretation and study of diverse cultures through the presentation of art from a range of civilizations and eras. This is in part what drew me to the Museum, and is a legacy I plan to advance as director.

It is clear to me that the DMA thrives on the energy of an engaged community of visitors who value its role as a cultural resource. I will build on the DMA’s success in cultivating connections with existing audiences and work to continue to grow and diversify our audience, making the DMA a welcoming place for our entire community. The DMA has an impressive record of reducing barriers to culture through

This success is accompanied by great curatorial scholarship and the presentation of acclaimed exhibitions. Jackson Pollock: Blind Spots and Spirit and Matter: Masterpieces

that have largely partnered with museums around the world to extend the DMA’s track record of international collaboration.

11

Annually, the DMA provides more than 5,000 educational programs for visitors of all ages and abilities.

We proudly serve over 50,000 schoolchildren with free access to the Museum’s distinguished collection. The DMA is a national leader in the development of accessible programming for visitors with special needs to connect with art. The Museum offers a variety of programs for individuals with vision impairment or dementia, and those on the autistic spectrum, as well as people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. As I hope I’ve illustrated here, the people this institution serves include you and the community of Dallas. We are a vibrant, energetic, and transformative city. To build on the success of the Museum’s fiscal year, we will develop a plan that will drive us to the future and expand our service to our public. My highest priority is to have each individual who lives in this city consider the DMA a second home. In closing, I would like to offer profound thanks to Walter Elcock for serving as the Museum’s Interim Director. Walter and his wife, Laura, have been tremendous supporters and advocates for the DMA for many years. Walter left retirement last September to help guide and lead the DMA. We all extend a very warm and sincere thank you to him for his time, leadership, and unwavering commitment to the Museum.
